- 2:34know, each Monday we do a segment that we call Mayor Monday. We
- 2:37had to bring a different mayor in from the Canall Valley and well, we
- 2:39were scheduled to have the mayor of Nitro, Dave case Bolt with us.
- 2:44Case Bolt not with us, but we have the next best thing, and
- 2:46Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro subbing for Dave the Great case Bolt.
- 2:53How are you man, Good morning? And you did all that without taking
- 2:55a breath. Yeah, pretty much a professional indicator. I'm a professional pronunciatator.
- 3:01Yes, I am. I am indeed sometimes and then sometimes these words
- 3:06just don't come out after thirty five years, sometimes the words just don't come
- 3:08out. But you're you're a radio guy. You're a rookie. Sign compared
- 3:13to you. I am Yeah. July fifth, nineteen seventy five. I've
- 3:15been on July fifth, nineteen seventy five, Joe, I was about to
- 3:17go into kindergarten. There you go. How do you like that? Like
- 3:21that you're a rookie. We don't wanna talk about Ryan, my producer,
- 3:24well what he was doing in nineteen seventy five, but thank you for something
- 3:28for the Mayorday. It's been a busy, busy weekend in Nitro. I
- 3:32mean, because you were on last week talking about the catfish tournament and the
- 3:37pickle eating contest and the pickleball tournament. Lots to cover this morning. Let's
- 3:42kind of do a little review of what all happened in Nitro last week.
- 3:45Well, we had the Metro nine one one safety pickleball Tournament. John Rutherford
- 3:51and the staff over at nine one one, they just you know, a
- 3:53gold star or a pickaball side head or something like that, but that pickaball
- 3:59trophy, but they just they stepped up and just blew it out of the
- 4:01court as it may be, and just a great tournament. Two hundred forty
- 4:05two total players. Forty four of the players were from out of state.
- 4:12Eleven different states came in to participate in this tournament. We had four hundred
- 4:17and fifty six total matches for Saturday and Sunday, the community night on Friday
- 4:23night. That's a story in itself because that just blew everybody away, and
- 4:28everybody was just really really pleased with the condition of the courts. Well,
- 4:32the brand new number one and it was the largest tournament in the state of
- 4:36West Virginia. The players were taken care of. We had the pool open
- 4:42both days, so it was a lot happening, and then Friday night that
- 4:46fishing tournament going on in Nitro. But the tournament itself just we're already getting
- 4:50reports. You always hear about the economic you know what it meant to the
- 4:57economic side of the city and everything. We're already getting reports from restaurants about
- 5:01everybody coming in and having their biggest weekend, one of the biggest weekends of
- 5:06the year, and this comes on the heels of a softball tournament we had
- 5:12the week before. It was the First Responders serving the community tournament. We
- 5:17had forty teams from a tri state area. We had a thousand players on
- 5:21Saturday, thousand players on Sunday. So a lot of things happening. And
- 5:26that's not only in Nitro Dave, but up and down Canal Metro Valley.
- 5:30I mean from Barboursville all the way to Charleston. Things are happening and it's
- 5:36fun to see. It really is these things. Again, they when you
- 5:40have an event, whether it's Forgatta or whether it's something going on in South
- 5:43Charleston or Saint Albans or Nitro in this case, or Tay's Valley, whatever,
- 5:46doesn't just impact those community show and I talk about this almost every day
- 5:49on the show. It impacts everyone because when you have that many teams and
- 5:54that many players that come in for that Pickaball Tom, they ain't all staying
- 5:57in Nitro, you know, they're not all dining in Nitro, although you
- 6:00do have some great places to eat there. They're going to all the surrounding
- 6:02areas. We had people as far away as Missouri coming in forward this pickleball
- 6:05tournament exactly, and we had a working relationship with the Putnam County Convention Visitors
- 6:12Bureau along with the Nitro Visitors Bureau, and we were working on making sure
- 6:15we had housing stretching from Cross Lanes to Putnam and all points in between.
- 6:20So it was a great time. What was really neat was on Friday night,
- 6:24the Community Night, Senator Shelley Moore, Capital US Senator Capitau was there
- 6:30and she was the doublest partner of Mayor case Bolts. So it was fun
- 6:34to watch her and she's trying to form a league, as I understand up
- 6:39in d C and get a pickleball caucus if you if you may. But
- 6:46it's it's it was a fun time and all ages, all ages playing and
- 6:50just having a really good time. She's gonna be on the show tomorrow,
- 6:54so I'm gonna have to ask her how her pickleball game is and how she
- 6:57did with Mayor case Ball. She's got a great you know, kind of
- 7:00putting in English on the paddle there and I don't know if you've played pickleball
- 7:03yet, Um, it's it's it's sort of like a whiffleball. It's kind
- 7:06of a cross between tennis and ping pong somewhere in between. And uh,
- 7:11and more experienced aged people like yourself and myself. It's right, it's right
- 7:16up our alley as it maybe. So I gotta ask about the pickle eating
- 7:20contest? How did that go well? Um? As I understand in a
- 7:25five minute time period, the winner ate eleven of those big pickles. Eleven
- 7:30eleven? Okay, all right? So uh and I what he woods from
- 7:34our sister station? What a seven point three? The beat was all excited
- 7:38about that. And I don't I think what he was busy on. It
- 7:40was a Friday nights that one need to pickolating again. But maybe wood he
- 7:43will get in on the next one. Let's talk about this again. We're
- 7:46talking with Joe Stevens, who's in for day mayor Dave Caseball of Nitro here
- 7:48on five eighty live. I'll talk about this Nitro Sports Complex. How are
- 7:53things going there? It's going very well with anything that's new. We got
- 7:57some challenges here and there, but we worked through them and everything. But
- 8:00the pool, a lot of people did not know what to expect because the
- 8:03previous pool had been there for sixty years while it had played out its term
- 8:09as it may be, and the new pool is getting rave reviews. People
- 8:13are enjoying it and it's going to be open until August the sixth. But
- 8:18we're also utilizing the pool for community parties and that sort of thing, and
- 8:24you could just call the pool, but again, you know with any pool
- 8:30in the area, lifeguards are an issue, and a lot of our kids
- 8:33are going back to school and everything, so that, but that's been that's
- 8:37been the cornerstone of the athletic complex so far has been the pool, The
- 8:43pickleball courts and the tennis courts will now they got a huge shot in the
- 8:48arm by everybody seeing the tournament going on, more people now wanting to play.
- 8:54Where physically is the sports complex located. For those that may not know,
- 8:58the corner of right there at Park Avenue, it's where the pool used
- 9:03to be, right across the street from the Nitro Public Library, across the
- 9:07street from Nitro City Park, right up the street from the high school.
- 9:11Right all in that area, right off of Route twenty five first Avenue.
- 9:16There, Nitro is becoming Joe a destination. It's not just a bedroom community
- 9:24or just a place where people go drive through to get to somewhere else.
- 9:26Nitro is truly becoming a destination. It really is. And with the work
- 9:31with the city planner, the Kim Reid and the Mayor and the City Council
- 9:35have been doing with demolishing the dilapidated properties and everything and opening up some space
- 9:41for new development coming in. We're seeing the phone ring in that area every
- 9:45day, indeed, and that's a good thing to see. Is that again?
- 9:48Not just drive through? And again I always tile these communities together,
- 9:52you know, places like Nitro and your rivals across the bridge there in Saint
- 9:56Albans, South Charleston. These are all these are all all becoming destinations,
- 10:01you say, rivals. I gotta throw this one out there for you,
- 10:03just to remind everybody. September the third, we're shutting down the bridge again.
- 10:07Okay. Last year we did it for the first time. We closed
- 10:11the Dick Henderson Bridge, the Nitro Saint Alban's Bridge, and on at eight
- 10:16thirty until ten thirty, nine thirty, we will be having a tremendous fireworks
- 10:22show that both the city and Saint Alban's have combined again together and it will
- 10:26be shot off from the boat ramp in Saint Albans. So that's September third,
- 10:33and the bridge closes at eight thirty. The fireworks started at nine thirty.
- 10:37And see what happens when when people can work together. If you can
- 10:41get Nitro and Saint Albans, if you can get those two communities and schools
- 10:45and what not to come together for front event like this. Anything are Washington?
- 10:48Are you listening? Anything's possible. You know, we've been called to
- 10:52the Principal's office a couple of times, you and I through our career and
- 10:56everything. So I got a phone call one morning and it was case Bole,
- 11:00Hey, come on over to the office, got to see you.
- 11:01So I walk in there and there's Mayor Scott James of Saint Alban's and Mayor
- 11:05Dave case Bolt of Nitro, of course, and I went, I don't
- 11:09know where this is going to be going, but it means w O r
- 11:13K yeah. And they said, well, what do you think about us
- 11:16combining for this? And I said, well, I've always wanted to shut
- 11:18down the bridge, and they said, okay, let's do it. Then
- 11:22there you go, there you go. Before we let you go, I
- 11:24want to talk to you about Nitro, Joe being the permanent home for the
- 11:28Vietnam War Memorial. It is now the it's now in understand the Nitro Museum
- 11:33of History and Wars. Lots of folks are showing up talking about that.
- 11:37It really is. Just recently, back when the ride for the Wall came
- 11:43through, the folks that were handling the West Virginia Vietnam War Memorial decided it
- 11:50was time for it not to be a traveling memorial, but find a place
- 11:54for it, and they chose the city of Nitro and the Nitro's History and
- 12:00Wars Museum. It is now on display and tomorrow actually we're doing a ten
- 12:05o'clock news conference. It's it's all it's ready to go, and people have
- 12:09been coming by already as we've been setting it up and getting it ready and
- 12:13that sort of thing. But people are hearing about it and want to come
- 12:16and pay their respect, is what it's all about. It's on the Nitros
- 12:20side of the museum. On the other side of the museum is the Wars
- 12:24Museum, which has history from Civil War all the way through the latest conflicts.
- 12:33All right, Joe, good stuff going on in Nitro is always man
- 12:35It's pleasure to have you here always. Let's go oz. I was gonna
- 12:39say, let's get a plug in for the Baltimore Orioles. Man, go
- 12:41ahead, they're playing, well, let's go out. Well the Reds are
- 12:43as well, Yes they are. What we hear was of the redteen seventy
- 12:46four games to one Eddie Watt through a three run homer to Lee may Or,
- 12:52we would have swept it four games. I was gonna say, there's
- 12:54no reason for me to ask when it was that was here. I was
- 12:58born, by the way I was in the Reds and the Orioles in the
- 13:01World Series. Someday, let's go, let's go. We'll see all right,
- 13:05let's go all right. That's Joe Stevens from the City of Night Ros

- 16:18Good morning, sir. How are you hey? I'm doing well,
- 16:21David's good to be with you. Things are looking pretty good here, mister
- 16:26a g Before we get into talking to about attorney general stuff, I want
- 16:30to talk just for a moment about your run for governor. And I don't
- 16:33want to let the cat out of the proverbial bag just yet, but I
- 16:37understand that State Auditor JB. Mccuski's gonna be on Hoppy next hour. Talk
- 16:42to JB myself Friday afternoon, and there's going to be a big announcement from
- 16:45Auditor mccuski coming up on the next hour on Hoppy as it pertains to his
- 16:51run for governor. I'm gonna be a good employee of the company here in
- 16:53defer to the big dog for the actual announcement. I know my role,
- 16:57but let's just say if a guber tour field, I don't know exactly what
- 17:02what Jabe's gonna say, but let's just say if the gubernatorial field, Sir,
- 17:04were to get a tad smaller to get hobbies going to have the story
- 17:07next hour your thoughts on that, because Paul's show mister Morrissey that you're you're
- 17:15way ahead in the race for governor. Sir. Look, I'm gonna keep
- 17:19working hard. I think Dave, you know this about me. We go
- 17:22out, we work hard, we grind, we make sure that we're doing
- 17:26great things for West Virginia. And we've been through this before, so you
- 17:30know, I know that you're going to see a lot of people over time.
- 17:33They're going to try to bring us down and they're gonna try to lower
- 17:37our numbers. But I think West Virginia's know of all the candidates in the
- 17:41race, I've got the one proven conservative record of getting really big things done,
- 17:48whether you're talking about improving educational attainment, protecting jobs. I mean,
- 17:52look at what's happening today. We're gonna make an announcement soon about the MVP
- 17:56pipeline. And then if you go through all the work we've done to try
- 18:02to protect our energy jobs, to protect our manufacturing jobs, these have been
- 18:07huge priorities for me, and we actually deliver, So I don't mess around
- 18:11with respect to all the political nonsense that I think you see others do.
- 18:17But I think you know I like JB. So let me let me give
- 18:22kudos and shout out to JB for the good work that he's done as an
- 18:26auditor. And I'm not going to get in front of any announcement, but
- 18:30I'll just say that we're going to continue to do the same things that West
- 18:36Virginians really like, and the other candidates just don't have that same record of
- 18:41getting big things done, and we need someone who's ready for the job,
- 18:45who's had the experience, who is constantly delivered, and no one else is
- 18:49going to be able to say that. You know, there'd be good people,
- 18:52they're going to promise good things, but I think West Virginians are looking
- 18:56for someone who can deliver on the big, big allergies facing our state.
- 19:00I had the group Chrest and Gallagher from Americans for Prosperity on the show last
- 19:07Thursday. I think it was mister Morrissey, and they're starting to do some
- 19:11endorsements and they are endorsing you for governor. How do you feel about that?
- 19:17Look, I'm gonna be very appreciative. I know that a lot of
- 19:21these groups are looking for someone who can lead and who gets big things done,
- 19:25and so I'm grateful for their support and the support of a lot of
- 19:27the other groups that are stepping out. And I think that when once again
- 19:32people look at the background, who do you think can best stand up for
- 19:36Second Amendment rights? It's not closed, right. Who is the proven pro
- 19:40life of candidate, who is defending jobs, Who's going to be best to
- 19:45go after workforce participation challenges. I think that's what folks are looking at the
- 19:51most, and that's why you're going to see a lot of other groups,
- 19:53a lot of other people standing up and supporting me. But look, we're
- 19:57the last thing we're going to worry about, are all the PA I said
- 20:00that before the race, I'm saying that now. You know, I do
- 20:03think we're well positioned to win. But I'm going to ask every single West
- 20:07Virginian for their vote because I want them to go back and say, wow,
- 20:11look at the record he did his ag Look what he did to fight
- 20:14the opioid epidemic in terms of accountability with the litigation related to drugs, and
- 20:21then even more importantly, developing a structure to use the resources the right way.
- 20:26That's what I want people to focus on. If they focus on the
- 20:30record and then the vision going forward, we're going to be in a good
- 20:33position. But I'm certainly appreciative for all of the groups stepping up. I
- 20:37think he'll see more coming out in the upcoming months and we'll continue to separate
- 20:41from the pack. It's not twenty eight. We're talking to Attorney General Patrick
- 20:45Morris here on five eighty five aty Live is brought to you a part about

- 20:52leader Pepsi. You can find your local husbands Pizza for delivery, pickup,
- 20:56or die in at husband Pizza dot com. Let's get to Attorney General stuff,
- 20:59Sir, and I want to talk about this West Virginia First Foundation.
- 21:02I've read a little about it in the news from some news releases to what
- 21:04exactly is the West Virginia First Foundation. Yeah, the West Virginia First Foundation
- 21:08is part of the overall effort to fight the drug epidemics here in West Virginia,
- 21:15and it's part of a structure that was created to handle how settlement money
- 21:21is going to be managed and dispersed here in West Virginia. So many people
- 21:26listening may recall that I got together with all of the counties and all of
- 21:30the cities in West Virginia and we came to an agreement about how all the
- 21:37resources would be handled. And then ultimately that approach was not only blessed by
- 21:41every single one of the counties and virtually all the cities, but every single
- 21:48member of the House of Delegates, every member of the Senate, the governor,
- 21:52everyone. Now, for the first time ever, there's a plan to
- 21:55attack the drug epidemic, and it's funded. So what this does is it
- 22:00sends twenty four and a half percent of the dollars directly to the counties and
- 22:03cities. That's what they had asked for. It was a big request to
- 22:07them. Seventy two and a half percent, though, goes to the West
- 22:11Virginia First Foundation. This is a public private partnership. It is a private
- 22:15foundation, but appointments are made through regions who elect members of the board,
- 22:22and then the governor, who has five picks as well, eleven picks total
- 22:26six by the regions. They were made last week. Five then from the
- 22:33governor, I expect that he will be announcing some in upcoming weeks, and
- 22:37then we will find an executive director. That search is now under way for
- 22:44the executive director, and then we're waiting for the court to decide what the
- 22:48attorney's fees and costs will look like. If there's really nothing can happen until
- 22:52that occurs, and then the net can be distributed to all the entities that
- 22:57are supposed to get their resource. So it's really the vehicle to address the
- 23:03drug epidemic, and I'm excited about it because I think we can save a
- 23:06lot of lives. Ye, we're talking about Attorney General Patrick Morrissey. It's
- 23:10nine thirty here on five eighty Live, and mister Morrisey, this is a
- 23:12subject that's a little close to my heart. You know, I started my
- 23:15care radio career over thirty five years ago on a radio station that was strictly
- 23:21AM. That station no longer exists, you know, AM radio is still
- 23:25very viable. The show itself is called five eighty Live based on the nearly
- 23:29one hundred year history of the station on AM radio. Of course, we've
- 23:32expanded, you know, to FM and ninety six point five and one or
- 23:33four point five FM via the WCHS network and of course available on all the
- 23:37apps and things that that nature. But but actual am radio is is still
- 23:44a thing. Um and and I was doing some radio. Your office is
- 23:48a little concerned by the way, Thank you for that about the future of
- 23:51AM radio. Talk about that. Yeah, and Dave, you know this,
- 23:53And I think that those listenings should know that there is an attack on
- 23:57AM radio in West Virginia and across the country. That we had gotten wind
- 24:03of a number of these new electric car manufacturers who are going to be moving
- 24:10forward and finishing their cars without access to AM radio. But those listening,
- 24:17No, am radio is really indispensable here in West Virginia. People listen to
- 24:22it. It's important for the emergency broadcast system where people can get emergency news
- 24:29and information. I mean, Dave, remember the DIRECTO or remember our Hurricane
- 24:33Sandy or the flood in twenty sixteen. No, West Virginians, like every
- 24:38other state, might be subject to some really difficult natural tragedies and you want
- 24:47to at that time have the ability to reach out through the AM radio network
- 24:52across the state. And it's probably the one unifying mechanism where people can get
- 24:59information news when the power might be out. And I think that's really important
- 25:04for people to know. And so we've asked all these electric car manufacturers to
- 25:10continue to rely on AM radio. I'm in the coalition with fifteen states.
- 25:15We know that the manufacturers have changed in the past. Forward originally was not
- 25:21going to put it in, and then they changed it. And we're hopeful
- 25:25that people are going to appreciate the importance of AM radio, not we're football
- 25:29games. Not just because basketball games or football games, not just because you
- 25:37get to stay up to date on local news, but the emergency system matters.
- 25:42Yes, and this is so critical to be able to do outreach to
- 25:45all West Virginians and AM radio is a great way to do it. And
- 25:49for a numbers perspective, sir, and we'll close on this, around forty
- 25:53seven million people every day every week. I'm sorry, forty seven million people
- 25:57week still listen to AM radio. So we're still a thing. We appreciate
- 26:02you. You're fighting for US Attorney General Patrick Morrissey hiding out. What's the
- 26:07rest of the summer looking like for you? I mean as far as as
- 26:10campaigning, Well, a couple of things. First, we're gonna have some
- 26:12really big news today. I mentioned the MVP pipeline brief that was just filed,
- 26:18and we're gonna be talking a lot about that today. We've got another
- 26:22huge US Supreme Court brief where we're trying to go after the deep state,
- 26:26and we're leading the way because that's what we do. We lead the way
- 26:30to fight for West Virginia jobs. So you'll continue to see all of those
- 26:33efforts. We're going to continue to try to get this foundation off the ground,
- 26:38and then we're going to just keep working hard to protect West Virginia jobs
- 26:42and fight the terrible drug epidemic and make sure that West Virginia is going to
- 26:48reach her potential. And but things are going very well, but we're not
- 26:52going to take it for granted. We're not going to take days off and
- 26:56people are gonna watch and wait, and we hope to see people out and
- 27:00about. I'm obviously always accessible. I get out and about and I'll be
- 27:04at the State Fair, I'll be at a lot of different public places.
- 27:07Remember, I'm the guy that's done over two hundred and jefty town halls and
- 27:11public meetings, and we're gonna keep doing that journey. General Patrick Morris,
- 27:15it's always a pleasure, sir, we'll talk soon. Thanks a lot,

- 31:15Mail and the Herald Dispatch. How are you, sir? Oh,
- 31:18it's great. Happy Monday too yet Happy Monday and a bunch of other papers
- 31:22which we want to get into a little bit later. You want to talk
- 31:23in newspaper and politics. First, Let's talk newspaper. Oh, kind of
- 31:26talk politics, Ok, all right, so you know we'll get back to
- 31:30politics and just a bit. So. I guess you kind of rock the
- 31:36media world a week or so ago when you announced its starting the first of
- 31:38August the Sunday paper as we know it is going to be going away.
- 31:42HD Media will instead do a paper that'll come out on Saturday and explain exactly
- 31:51how is that gonna work and what was behind the decision to do this.
- 31:55Well, the newspaper industries continue to involve and we must change the times just
- 31:57like everything else, as as adapted with how the people consume their news is
- 32:01changing the Sunday pay. Here's a misconception the Sunday paper. Yeah, technically,
- 32:06are we going to print a paper on Sunday morning. No, but
- 32:08we're taking that same Sunday edition and printing in a day earlier on Saturday and
- 32:14combining it with Saturday's paper, which was ourt least red paper sat in our
- 32:17thinnest paper. So that big, thick, large Sunday paper will now arrive
- 32:22a day earlier on Saturday morning, and we'll have extended times on Friday night
- 32:27where all the high school sports will be in it. Who hyperlocal content,
- 32:30You're gonna have the same four to six sections. So we're taking a paper
- 32:34that was normally twenty eight thirty two pages on Sunday and taking it up to
- 32:37forty forty four pages. So that paper is gonna be bigger, badder than
- 32:39ever, and it's gonna come out and it's gonna be called the Weekend Edition,
- 32:43just like many other publications. The Charlotte Paper did that, The Times
- 32:45have done that, The USA Today has done that a long time ago.
- 32:49Tampa Bay Tribune has done that. This is continual to evolve in the newspaper
- 32:52industry, and that does a lot of things. So now we're able to
- 32:54combine a lot of those stories for the Sunday paper. You know, they
- 32:59are written two or three days in advance. They're more enterprise stories, they're
- 33:01kind of, you know, something that's not as timely, and they're more
- 33:04entertaining, and they allow for our readers to now enjoy the paper two days.
- 33:07So yes, the weekend edition will start on that weekend though Saturday,
- 33:10August fifth, fourth and fifth weekend. It'll be a combined version. So
- 33:15the Sunday paper is shifting over to Saturday. So everything you have, the
- 33:19ABC, D, E and F section will still be there in a larger,
- 33:22thicker paper. You'll just receive it a day earlier. And what's that
- 33:24do? It sits in the convenience stores a couple of days longer. It
- 33:28sits in the grocery stores, double chance about and longer to enjoy all those
- 33:30stories. So there, I think there was a misconception, and I was
- 33:35a little bit confused. This is not a combination paper of the Huntington paper
- 33:39in the Tarlston paper. I thought that I had the TV stations kind of
- 33:43misrepresented that, thinking that we were going to combine the Herald Dispatch with the
- 33:46Gazette Mail. That is not happening. That is absolutely not happening. We
- 33:50have two separate newsrooms, two separate staffs. We kind of we're all under
- 33:52the same parent umbrella like HD Media, just like you have multiple radio stations
- 33:57in your company. So what we're gonna do is the center. Geez,
- 34:00we'll be there. We can still share stories. We have thirteen papers combined.
- 34:04We will share the best stories from all of our outlets and put into
- 34:07this one weekend paper. So I think it gives us an opportunity to cover
- 34:10the state from a regional perspective too, because we have a bigger and larger
- 34:15paper for everyone to enjoy. So you will have on Saturday morning a Charleston
- 34:20Gazette Mail Saturday slash Sunday edition in Huntington. You will have a separate paper,
- 34:25completely separate Harold Dispatch Saturday Slash Sunday weekend edition. Okay, so glad
- 34:31we got that. To clear it up, we have a text here for
- 34:34you. It says, I'm a couponner who depends on them to keep my
- 34:37stockpile filled, so I'm able to help family, neighbors and charity donations.
- 34:40Doug text says a texture, what is going to happen with the Sunday coupon
- 34:44inserts? A great question. We actually get the kupons on Wednesday, so
- 34:46the cupons will be inserted in that Saturday morning weekend edition. So everything,
- 34:52like I said this, everything you get in your Sunday paper will be there
- 34:54on Saturday morning. Keupons, crossword puzzles, comics, same color, nothing's
- 35:00going away. Your TV guides, It'll have Saturday Sunday all your stuff that
- 35:05you can watch on TV. Your editorial pages will actually be a combination of
- 35:08Saturday and Sunday editorial pages. First section will be news, second section will
- 35:13be life and style sections. There on the town, it's always community pictures.
- 35:19The thing that's going to be really exciting is that local, local,
- 35:22local sports on high school night, on Friday night, we will have more
- 35:25time and more pages to cover more high school sports. So what about press
- 35:30time? Because I know that you know, there used to be different editions
- 35:32of the paper. You had the city final, and all newspapers have done
- 35:36that, and now press time is a lot earlier from what I understand what
- 35:38it used to be. So but you're gonna be able to have those on
- 35:42you you're saying it's a moving progress. We're actually we're actually looking to extend
- 35:45the press times back. Does that mean that the paper may be later.
- 35:50The paper will not be later, because we still have certain deadlines we have
- 35:52to meet with the carriers, and we mail a lot of papers too.
- 35:54I don't know if you knew this day, we put a lot of mail
- 35:57papers in the mail and people actually we have to have it to the post
- 36:00office about four am, so we have deadlines to meet, a hard deadline
- 36:02for the post office so they can it's called bolt mailing, and they take
- 36:06the newspapers and actually mail them and people get the newspaper with their mail.
- 36:08And that's in a lot of the outlying areas, and you're seeing that across
- 36:12the country papers because it's hard. It's hard to find carriers, it's hard
- 36:15to find people who want to come to work every day, so we're continuing
- 36:17to struggle with that. Delivering the paper has always been a challenge, but
- 36:22we struggled with what do you do to preserve the newspaper? Do you raise
- 36:24the price? No, we didn't want to raise the price to consumers.
- 36:29Do you eliminate employees? You don't want to do that? Do? We
- 36:31thought? What the rest of the industry and markets our size are doing is
- 36:35combining and picking the day that's the least read, which was Saturday, combining
- 36:38it with your other paper and making your best product, the Sunday paper even
- 36:43better. Talk about Doug Skaff of HD Media Delica Dugs Haff. We're going
- 36:45to get into the political aspect here in a coup of them up. But
- 36:47somebody said a text and ask about the Sunday comics, So another now on
- 36:51Sunday comics will be there there. We get those ahead of time. So
- 36:53what we do when you print paper, you print three fourths of the paper
- 36:58is already printed before Sunday. The comics are printed early, the coupons are
- 37:00ready to go. A lot of the editorials that come in. The thing
- 37:04that we hold the presses for are the sports sections, but everything else will
- 37:07be just like Sunday. It's gonna get it a day earlier, so you'll
- 37:08have your comics, and then you're gonna have the Saturday comics as well as
- 37:12the color comics that come out on Sunday, as well as extra crossword puzzles
- 37:16and extra games for and the obituaries will be there as well too, and
- 37:20the classified. Nothing's gonna change. You're just gonna receive your larger paper a
- 37:23day earlier. And I've read that you guys have bought a series dug of
- 37:28newspapers. Of course you already own a series of smaller papers Jonne my hometown
- 37:31paper, I think the Logan Banner. But you've also just recently purchased some
- 37:37papers I understand in Virginia. Is that right, Yeah, we've got three
- 37:38papers. We're expanding into Virginia. The weekly newspapers are alive and well,
- 37:43and especially in those news desert areas, you know, where there's not a
- 37:45lot of competition. We just bought three papers in Virginia, Grundy, Virginia,
- 37:50and we have one called it's called the Virginia Mountaineer, the Lebanon Paper
- 37:53down to Lebanon News down to Lebanon, Virginia, and the most recent is
- 37:57in Pulaski Pulaski, Virginia called the Southwest Time. So we've got three papers.
- 38:00They come out once a week. And what we were able to make
- 38:04these papers work because we combine all the synergies and we print them here in
- 38:07Charleston and then we ship them down there and mail them through the mail.
- 38:10All those are delivered through the mail, and those weekly papers and a lot
- 38:15of these small towns, as you mentioned, are are a pretty big deal
- 38:17because a lot of times you're not covering news per sect, what's news to
- 38:22somebody, but it's not necessarily you're not going to be covering the breaking news
- 38:24and those, but you're covering more societal type thing, club type things,
- 38:28you know, community of community, evans calling activities. They want to see
- 38:31their friends and family and neighbors in the newspaper and what's going on. Those
- 38:35are the type of papers that sit on your coffee table three, four or
- 38:37five days. And we think this new weekend edition will sit on your coffee
- 38:39table three or four days. So it's exciting times in the newspaper industry.
- 38:43Nothing's going away. We're combining our synergies. We're just making it better for
- 38:45you so we can continue to deliver local news. Five of They Live is
- 38:49brought to you, parted by your Hometown Baseball achieved the Charleston Dirty Birds off
- 38:52night for the Birds tonight they return home though tomorrow night to face York.
- 38:55Could go Mark Ballpark tomorrow night. It's half price beer and I also bow
- 38:59Go hot dogs plus baseball beingo sponsored by AARP and another truly Tuesday as well
- 39:04for tickets, promotions, gears, schedules and more. Is a Dirty Birds
- 39:07Baseball dot com. We're talking to Doug scaff so, so Doug wat is
- 39:09a future newspapers now Listen, Listeners know, I'm a guy. I'm that
- 39:13old school guy. I still have and you and I've talked about this.
- 39:16I still have my gazette mail delivered to my house daily, my hometown newspapers.
- 39:22I mentioned the logan banner, Oh by you guys used to be every
- 39:23day but Saturday. Now that's I think pretty much a weekly paper at this
- 39:29point. So, I mean, how are newspapers looking today? Because even
- 39:34every every media outlet has changed cable television is not what it used to be.
- 39:38Radio is going strong. But we're different now. We reply on more
- 39:43on on websites and apps and things of that nature. What kind of changes
- 39:46are we seeing in news? I mean, just like in TV, and
- 39:49just like every news outlet, we are a news provider who also still prints
- 39:53of paper. We are a news outlet that's still prints of paper. Just
- 39:57like in TV. They are TV stations who they have web, they have
- 40:00digital, they have apps. So we are also evolving with the times.
- 40:05We still print a newspaper for those people who love it. I love to
- 40:07touch and feel it, and I love the smell of it. It's nothing
- 40:08like It's nothing like you know, stepping away from the monitor, stepping away
- 40:13from your phone and looking at a paper. It's just kind of a refreshing
- 40:16time of day that you can just step away and kind of decompress. But
- 40:20the bottom line is newspapers, newspaper companies will be around forever. The way
- 40:24that we deliver that news is all that's changing. I've got to check.
- 40:29Somebody said, well, the Monday papers still be online only, so the
- 40:31Monday paper. Yeah, that we have news seven days a week. That's
- 40:35what I didn't say, you know, seven days a week, we were
- 40:37producing news seven days a week online, So there will be a Monday E
- 40:40edition will come back. The E edition looks like a newspaper, it's just
- 40:44online only it won't be printed. So we'll have any edition. And Sunday
- 40:46there's a new feature. I didn't even mention. Sunday we're going to have
- 40:50an email newsletter of all the stuff that you might have missed through the week,
- 40:52like a highlight of all the stuff, as well as anything that happens
- 40:55Saturday afternoon and beyond. So you will still receive that in your inbox as
- 40:59a as a as a Sunday update newsletter. So that'll just be delivered,
- 41:04as you said, to your email, right to your email so have it'll
- 41:06kind of summarize all has happened and what you might have missed in also the
- 41:09thing that you know saying what about my WV and Marshall Sports. You know
- 41:13a lot of those games are at nighttime anyways, and we weren't covering them
- 41:15in the Sunday paper as well. So we go online, all that stuff
- 41:17will be fresh and we'll be right there on our website the morning. You
- 41:21will awake with those digital news and we'll continue to press all that out.
- 41:23We'll send it out through email, electronically on your app. We're just trying
- 41:27to deliver the news as many different ways as possible, keep it hyper local,
- 41:31and go in depth. You know, with this Sunday weekend edition,
- 41:34we can go deeper and deeper dive into topics. You know, you're not
- 41:37just gonna have a headline. You're not just gonna read a headline. You're
- 41:38gonna have a deep dive story with a larger, thicker paper and it's it's
- 41:43going to be impressive. I just want people to give it a shot.
- 41:45They call me, text me with ideas, shoot me an email, whatever
- 41:49we can do. And you know you mentioned the Huntington, Charleston and all
- 41:52the other newspapers. The unique thing about us is we can keep people informed
- 41:55about what's going on in our region. If there's a new restaurant in Huntington,
- 41:59or an event or concert or something going on in Logan or down in
- 42:00Boone County, we can inform the region through our various outlets. Talk with
- 42:05Doug scaff all, right, now let's talk politics. Get ready to talk
- 42:07politics. Oh you love politics? You can't wait. I love politics,
- 42:10man, you know, I live for this stuff, all right, So
- 42:13let's talk politics. And I've heard rumors. I've heard rumors that Doug scaff
- 42:21may may just rumors speculate on that may be concerned a party change. I've
- 42:28heard that those are just rumors right now, Dave. I mean, people
- 42:30hit me up all the time. They hit me up during session, they
- 42:32hit me up whenever there's a bill or something. Maybe I vote don't necessarily
- 42:36what the party line wanted me to. I want to be honest. It's
- 42:38it's harder and harder to be a moderate, to be a moderate conservant,
- 42:43especially within both parties. You know. I think the extremes have, you
- 42:46know, kind of come in and taken over the far right and the far
- 42:50left. And you'll see that. I've always probably to myself into being a
- 42:52moderate independent type leader, but in my position as minority leader, it makes
- 42:55it even tougher to do that, because my job as a minority leader is
- 42:59to carry the mess siege of the Democratic Caucus. Say, and sometimes if
- 43:01you step out and maybe vote how you normally would or with your conscience,
- 43:06it's hard to deliver that message on a consistent basis, So I think that's
- 43:08the only thing that has changed. So new statement for view on that as
- 43:12far I we have we have a special session coming up, about we have
- 43:15a special session coming up, I'll plan to be a minority leader. I
- 43:19mean, here's what I did promise. I promised to my team back in
- 43:21December. You know, we had talked about am I the right person to
- 43:22be minority leader as we moved through in the right message and the messenger,
- 43:27so to speak. I pledged to talk to everyone in my caucus here over
- 43:30the next couple of weeks in the minority caucus about just like I said,
- 43:32after session, take a step back, reevaluate and make sure I am or
- 43:37the right person to continue in that role. And if not, you know,
- 43:38I would gladly step down and give it to somebody else, because it's
- 43:42very hard. It's becoming harder and harder to be a moderate in the Democratic
- 43:45Party in the state of West Virginia, is in the Republican Party as well,
- 43:49and the Republican Party. It's like I used to think that there was
- 43:52like twenty percent far left, twenty percent far right, and everybody else was
- 43:54in the middle, but that that number on the extremes continues to be louder
- 43:58and louder. But I think leadership you have to start. You have to
- 44:01lead from the middle. You have to lead from the middle, whether you're
- 44:04a Republican or Democrat, and you got to work your way out. And
- 44:06I really pride to myself for the last three years is bringing all the people
- 44:09within our caucus together to find common ground. So all right, we'll close
- 44:14on this. There's been a speculation about Joe Manchin, somebody that you know
- 44:16very well. Uh is he going to run for Senate again? I mean
- 44:21now national media's picking up on the fact that he may indeed run for president
- 44:23on a third party no labels anything like that, based on what I've heard
- 44:29your name thrown out there that you possibly could would maybe look at something like
- 44:36that, like a like a no labels type thing, any any comment on
- 44:39that. You know, the no labels thing is interesting. It's it's what
- 44:44created that, you know, the two party system created the no labels he
- 44:46created. What I just said is, you know, people want to work
- 44:50together. The average West Virginian and American want us to get things done.
- 44:53They're sick and tired of the Is it a right idea or left idea.
- 44:57And unfortunately I used to say politics was all local and you got to know
- 45:00that person. It didn't matter if you had an r D by your name.
- 45:02But because of national politics and that label you get, yeah, it
- 45:06tarnishes you good or bad either way, it kind of just brand you.
- 45:09Uh, you know, and that's that's not always the case. I still
- 45:13want people to get to know that person. You know, I walk down
- 45:15the street and I don't want people to know if I'm a Democrat or republic
- 45:17They just want to know that I do a good job. I'm an effective
- 45:20leader. And it shouldn't be oh, I'm not voting for you because you
- 45:22have a letter or not by your name. All right, before we go
- 45:24special session, got interims coming up? Talk about that. Yeah, special
- 45:29session coming up, you know, the uh, the Caucus put a statement
- 45:31out there we'd like to see the governor focus get our house in order before
- 45:35we spend some of this surplus money. We haven't seen the call yet exactly
- 45:37what all was going to be on a byss. It'll be the six seven
- 45:43eight coming up Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. I assume it's going to be
- 45:45a quick session. Just how to allocate that money, and the governor will
- 45:47have that kind of predetermined and it will be set and it'll be a quick
- 45:51session. I just hope that we help get our house in order. Every
- 45:53time we have these surpluses, we keep seems like we keep kicking. Whether
- 45:57you're a Republican or Democrat, doesn't matter. We have corrections issues, we
- 45:59have care issues. Yet everybody says Rhodes issues. But our higher education system
- 46:04is in trouble. We've continued to cut higher education till we can't cut no
- 46:07more. And now you can see the ramifications of it, with our higher
- 46:09education institutions looking to cut back and cut programs, and that only affects the
- 46:13people West Virginia. Dougs Scafts. Always a pleasure to talk to you,
- 46:15man. We'll talk soon, all right, Thanks, Dave, I appreciate

- 49:17these Texas best. I can't Texas. Dave asked morris see how many big
- 49:21pharmaceutical company employees or executives has gone to prison for all drug overdoses in our
- 49:28states? Texas, There's something a bit dystopian about the image of Congressional millionaire
- 49:34Jerryatric's playing pickleball while children in the US starve, education funding gets gutted,
- 49:38and the wealth gap exponentially increases. The I got mine attitude will be the
- 49:44downfall of the US. Okay, So, and this is a reference to
- 49:49that. We're talking about Senator shelleymore Capita, who will be on the show
- 49:52tomorrow. Senator Capita taking part or at least being, you know, part
- 49:55of the festivities there at the pickleball tournament in Nitro. I mean I don't
- 50:00really understand that. I mean she's not supposed to, you know, show
- 50:05up at community events. I don't know, Texas. Of course, Morrissey
- 50:08wants AFP also known as coke support. That's the Americans for Prosperity their reference,
- 50:15and there he wants to access those deep pockets. Also, if Morrissey
- 50:17is a big Second Amendment supporter, does he support cannabis users being able to
- 50:21own a purchase firearms. Last time I read the Second Amendment, it said
- 50:24no infringement. I asked Morrisey if he's proud to have had have delivered attackers
- 50:32to the Capitol on January sixth with his robocall Tesla's removing AM radio, says
- 50:37a texture. Does Morrisey agree this is an attack from the woke Marxist elon
- 50:42musk Texas of California can mandate this talking about AM radio at a senator that
- 50:49the mister Morrisey was talking about, they can mandate on cars. Why can't
- 50:52West Virginia require cars here have am don't know, don't know. We'll look
- 50:57into that. Text says, I think we all have to accept that paper
- 51:04versions of the newspaper will soon not exist at all. I certainly hope not.
- 51:07I get it, but I certainly hope not. Texas Dave, having
- 51:12lived in Logan, you could always tell who read the Logan banner by their
- 51:15black fingertips. That's true as a very true statement there, Texas Dave,
- 51:22Doug scaff doesn't make any sense with the change of publishing the weekend newspaper,
- 51:25Printing the new weekend paper on late Friday or early Saturday cannot have any important
- 51:30news that would have happened on a Saturday or Sunday. There's only a money
- 51:34saving action from HD media, thanks Dave. According to a texture, Texas
- 51:39says Morrissey has many problems and turn people off, his wife being at the
- 51:44top of the list. She meddles too much in local politics. It's really,
- 51:47it's really a bad look. Texas scaff is going to switch the Republican
- 51:52party if he's really Republican. If so, why not change today? And
- 51:55so waiting well after the August special session. Way he said sending his way
- 52:00out the door. Dave, you'll be the first to know. That's what
- 52:01he told me. Uh text says final texts Let's look at this from a
- 52:05different perspective. If combining the Saturday Sunday papers the way to go, then
- 52:07why do we have separate editions in the first place? All right, gotta
- 52:10go tomorrow. On the show, Shelby Moore, Capital is going to be
- 52:13her Spencer Adkins from Storm Track of thirteen, not talking whatever, talking band
- 52:16stuff. He's a big band guy and there's a big band festivity he's going
- 52:20on. He's gonna talk about the plets reach Rich client it makes realty.
- 52:22I'm gonna talk about the real estate crisis. We don't have enough available houses
- 52:25in Tay's valley. Rich is gonna talk about that coming up on the show
