Ep. 168. Who is Azazel in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

0:17
Hello nerds, my name is Megan from Vigilante Vibes and I'm
0:21
here with another character breakdown and I have been
0:24
breaking down characters that are the underrated mutants of
0:28
the Marvel Universe so why not continue that?
0:30
Today I want to talk about Azazel.
0:33
Azazel is an interesting character who has been talked
0:38
about quite a bit in the past few years and I think we all
0:41
know why because of the retcon that he is not Nightcrawler's
0:46
father, but we will get into that.
0:49
So starting off, Azazel first appeared in Marvel Comics in
0:53
Uncanny X-Men #428 and was created by Chuck Austin and Sean
0:57
Phillips. Azazel claimed he was one of the
1:00
oldest mutants around like biblical times as a part of a
1:04
group of demonic looking mutants called the Naeopham.
1:07
According to him, he once went toe to toe with Mephisto and
1:11
others for the title of Satan. They wanted to be called Satan.
1:16
Eventually the Naifem were banished to a hellish dimension
1:20
called the Brimstone Dimension by a rival group of Angelical
1:23
king mutants known as the Chaerefem.
1:27
Azazel seemed to believe that Angel who's worn Worthington the
1:32
Third was actually a modern day member of that group.
1:37
Which I mean just 'cause he has wings.
1:41
Over the years, Azazel made all kinds of shady deals with
1:43
humans, including the family of Monet St.
1:47
Croix. He was the only one among the NA
1:50
FM who could breakthrough the dimensional barrier and come
1:53
back to Earth for short periods thanks to his teleportation
1:55
powers. The only way he could return
1:59
permanently though was by fathering children, which his
2:07
offspring were naturally connected to his dimension and
2:10
he planned to use them to create a stable gateway between the
2:13
realms. So around 20 years ago, he
2:16
started seeking out women to bear his children.
2:20
Great. During that time, he crossed
2:23
paths with Mystique in Germany while she was married to a
2:26
wealthy nobleman named Baron Christian Wagner.
2:30
Azazel was introduced as a business partner of Christians
2:34
and from Azazel's point of view, he successfully seduced
2:38
Mystique, who ended up pregnant with what he believed was his
2:41
child. But things were a little more
2:44
complicated than he realized. Mystique's long time partner and
2:48
now wife Destiny had been working undercover as her maid
2:52
had hinted to Mystique that she wanted a child.
2:56
Destiny also had a vision that Azazel would eventually wipe out
2:59
the entire mutant race unless he was stopped by someone he
3:03
believed to be his own child. Because Mystique could
3:07
genetically shift her form, she transformed into Azazel and out
3:11
of love, impregnated Destiny. As a result, their child would
3:16
look like Azazel, fooling him completely.
3:20
That child would become Nightcrawler, my favorite
3:23
mutant. Not long after, Mystique killed
3:26
her husband Christian, after he discovered her relationship with
3:29
Destiny. Later on, thinking Mystique was
3:32
dead, Azazel went on to father dozens more children.
3:36
These kids were eventually drawn to a mysterious island called
3:39
Isla de Dimanis, where they sacrificed themselves to open a
3:44
portal for Azazel and his army to invade Earth.
3:48
His goal was to wipe out both the Sheriffem and what he called
3:52
normal mutants, mutants who didn't look monstrous and
3:57
weren't treated like freak. Alongside Nightcrawler, another
4:00
one of Azazel's children was a mutant from Genosha called
4:02
Abyss. All of Azazel's children fell
4:06
into a kind of zombie like trance and managed to open a
4:09
portal to his dimension. A group of X-Men followed Kurt
4:13
Nightcrawler there and jumped through once the gateway opened.
4:17
Inside, Azazel had a blast messing with them, pretending to
4:21
be Satan or at least being behind the biblical myth.
4:26
In the end though, the X-Men managed to take him and his army
4:29
down and banished him to some unknown void.
4:33
The team escaped with Nightcrawler, Abyss and another
4:36
one of Azazel's children, Kiwi Black.
4:39
For years no one knew where Azazel had ended up, but
4:42
eventually he reappeared, this time with some creepy little
4:46
Azazel like Bamps. By and side.
4:49
He revealed he was the master of Cal Cabrina, a former ally
4:55
Frankenstein's monster, and had actually been banned from every
4:59
known realm of hell. So that is a Sazel.
5:03
I think he's pretty underrated for how powerful he is.
5:06
And yeah, he's a he's a big character who who is wild.
5:12
So yeah, the retcon was that he was originally Nightcrawler's
5:18
father and that was just kind of everyone knew 'cause he had
5:22
similar powers, he looked like him.
5:24
But then they changed it to be Destiny and Mystique, which very
5:30
hot take I'm not mad at. I do like Azazel being his dad
5:36
because it's just he looks alike, they have the same powers
5:41
and Azazel is like an evil demon and Kurt is this religious
5:47
little cinnamon roll of a mutant.
5:49
I like that. I like that huge difference.
5:52
But Mystique and Destiny are fine too.
5:55
So with that being said, I have some comics for you to check
5:59
out. If I missed any please let me
6:03
know in the comments because these are only ones I read.
6:05
I haven't read of all all of Marvel Comics.
6:07

6:16

6:23

6:34
episode. I hope you will like and
