- 0:07Howdy Star Gazers and welcome to this episode
- 0:10of Star Trails. Drew here, and I'll be your guide
- 0:14to the night sky for the week starting July 27th
- 0:18through August 2nd. This week dual meteor showers
- 0:22have the potential to light up the sky. Mars,
- 0:26dances with the moon, and a recent supernova
- 0:29may be visible depending on where you live. And
- 0:32later in the show, another ground -breaking discovery
- 0:35has likely solved one of the long -standing mysteries
- 0:39of the constellation Orion. Whether you're tuning
- 0:43in from the backyard, the balcony, or just your
- 0:46imagination, I'm glad you're here. So find a
- 0:49cozy spot, let your eyes adjust, and let's see
- 0:52what the sky holds for us this week. Tonight
- 0:56and tomorrow a very thin waxing crescent moon
- 1:00glides through the western evening sky. Tonight
- 1:03it appears just a few degrees from Mars and by
- 1:07the 28th it is shifted slightly to lie southeast
- 1:10of the red planet. This makes for a simple but
- 1:14beautiful binocular and naked eye pairing shortly
- 1:17after sunset. By the end of the week the moon
- 1:21reaches its first quarter phase, rising at sunset
- 1:25and dominating the early evening sky, before
- 1:27continuing to wax toward full in early August.
- 1:32Late July brings a celestial double feature.
- 1:35The Southern Delta Aquarids and Alpha Capricornids
- 1:39peak during the night of July 29 into the early
- 1:43hours of July 30. Under pre -dawn darkness, these
- 1:47two showers can combine for as many as 25 meteors
- 1:51per hour, with the Capricornids often producing
- 1:54slower moving fireballs. With a low moon just
- 1:58after first quarter, the dimmer meteors should
- 2:01still be visible, especially if you face south
- 2:04under clear skies. From your backyard around
- 2:08sunset, Mars, as we've already mentioned, glows
- 2:12in the western sky, sinking lower each night
- 2:15as it transitions from Leo into Virgo. Saturn
- 2:19climbs the eastern horizon later in the evening
- 2:22and becomes an inviting target after 10 p .m.,
- 2:26rising higher throughout the night. In the pre
- 2:29-dawn eastern sky, Venus and Jupiter make for
- 2:33a stunning duo, with Venus blazing brightly and
- 2:36Jupiter steadily climbing beside it. This pairing
- 2:40continues into early August, setting the stage
- 2:43for a dramatic conjunction around mid -month.
- 2:47Let's talk about some constellations and deep
- 2:50-sky objects. as night falls look east to spot
- 2:54Aquila the eagle soaring higher with its brilliant
- 2:57star Altair, forming one of the vertices of the
- 3:01famous summer triangle, along with stars Vega
- 3:04and Deneb. By about 11pm, that triangle is high
- 3:09overhead and unmistakable. Low to the south,
- 3:14Scorpius and Sagittarius reveal a rich tapestry
- 3:17of Milky Way star fields, nebula, and clusters,
- 3:22especially early in the evening before they dip
- 3:24too low. Using binoculars or a small telescope,
- 3:29check out NGC 6709, a bright open cluster in
- 3:35Aquila shining with dozens of stars scattered
- 3:38across the field. You may also want to turn your
- 3:41optics towards NGC 5634, a compact globular cluster
- 3:47within Virgo, which presents a tight ball of
- 3:51faint stars just beyond what's visible to the
- 3:53naked eye. Viewers in the southern hemisphere
- 4:04have been enjoying a very rare cosmic event.
- 4:07Nova V462 lupi. Discovered back in June, it rose
- 4:14from an invisible magnitude plus 22 star to become
- 4:18visible to the naked eye in less than a week.
- 4:22It peaked around magnitude 5 .5 on June 20th,
- 4:26briefly shining as a new point of light in the
- 4:29constellation Lupus. This explosion occurred
- 4:33in a binary system where a white dwarf siphoned
- 4:36gas from a companion star until reaching ignition.
- 4:40That thermonuclear blast suddenly super brightened
- 4:44the system without destroying the white dwarf
- 4:46itself. Observers in the southern hemisphere
- 4:50had the best view, but lucky stargazers in southern
- 4:53parts of the US, including Texas, Florida, and
- 4:57California, have also reported seeing it low
- 5:00on the southern horizon. By late July, the NOVA
- 5:04is still estimated around magnitude 5 .9, so
- 5:08it's fading slightly, but remains within reach
- 5:12using binoculars or small telescopes under dark
- 5:15skies if you have an unobstructed southern horizon.
- 5:19If you're located below roughly 40 to 45 degrees
- 5:22north latitude, step outside between 10 and 11
- 5:26pm local time. Face the south and look within
- 5:30a few degrees of delta and beta lupi and Kappa
- 5:33Centauri to find the nova using star -hopping
- 5:37techniques. As always, a stargazing app such
- 5:41as Stellarium will help you easily locate these
- 5:44stars. Coming up, we'll explore a new discovery
- 5:48that has likely unlocked one of the secrets of
- 5:51the constellation Orion. That's after the break.
- 5:55Stay with us. It's no exaggeration to say this
- 6:10summer has been one for the books when it comes
- 6:13to space news. From the discovery of one of the
- 6:16most massive comets ever spotted, to distant
- 6:19spiral galaxies that challenge ideas of how galaxies
- 6:23form, we've been swimming in discoveries lately.
- 6:27And they keep coming. Today, we set our sights
- 6:30on a red supergiant that's been a fixture in
- 6:33our sky for centuries and a mystery that's endured
- 6:37for just as long. We're talking about Betelgeuse,
- 6:41the unmistakable crimson star marking the shoulder
- 6:45of Orion. If you've spent time under winter skies,
- 6:50you've definitely seen it, and if you've followed
- 6:52astronomy headlines over the past few years,
- 6:56you've maybe heard about its antics, from unexpected
- 7:00dimming events to speculation that it might be
- 7:03gearing up for a supernova. But one mystery surrounding
- 7:08Betelgeuse has remained unsolved until now. Astronomers
- 7:13have long known that Betelgeuse pulses and varies
- 7:16in brightness. It swells and contracts on a regular
- 7:20cycle of about 400 days. That's not unusual for
- 7:25a star in its late stages of life. But Betelgeuse
- 7:29also shows a second, far slower rhythm, brightening
- 7:34and dimming over the course of about six years.
- 7:38For decades, this longer cycle has baffled scientists.
- 7:42This summer, researchers may have finally cracked
- 7:46the case. Using a cutting -edge, high -resolution
- 7:49imager attached to the Gemini North Telescope
- 7:53in Hawaii, astronomers caught sight of something
- 7:56hiding in plain sight. A small, faint companion
- 8:00star nestled right up against Betelgeuse's glowing
- 8:04atmosphere. It's being nicknamed Betel Buddy,
- 8:08and it might be the key to solving this thousand
- 8:11-year -old puzzle. Betelgeuse is so massive and
- 8:15bright that spotting a companion is incredibly
- 8:18difficult. It's like trying to see a firefly
- 8:21next to a spotlight. But the Gemini North Scope
- 8:25is designed for exactly this kind of work. Using
- 8:29rapid -fire exposures to cancel out atmospheric
- 8:32turbulence, it was able to tease out the faint
- 8:35signature of a blue -white star orbiting close
- 8:39to Betelgeuse. This tiny companion is thought
- 8:43to be a young, hot star about one and a half
- 8:46times the mass of our Sun. That makes it minuscule
- 8:50compared to Betelgeuse, which is hundreds of
- 8:52times the Sun's diameter, and so distended it's
- 8:56practically spilling into space. But what this
- 9:00smaller star lacks in size, it makes up for in
- 9:03drama. The discovery helps explain the strange
- 9:07six -year cycle. As the companion star orbits,
- 9:11it moves through Betelgeuse's thick cloud of
- 9:14expelled dust and gas, essentially clearing a
- 9:18temporary path, like a snowplow, carving a lane
- 9:21through a fog of cosmic debris. When this happens,
- 9:25more of Betelgeuse's light reaches us here on
- 9:28Earth, making the star appear brighter for a
- 9:30time. Once the companion continues on its orbit
- 9:34and the dust drifts back in, Betelgeuse dims
- 9:37again. This orbital dance appears to happen every
- 9:412100 days, just about six years, perfectly matching
- 9:46the observed long -period variation. But there's
- 9:50more. The two stars are shockingly close. The
- 9:55companion star lies just about four astronomical
- 9:58units away from Betelgeuse, or roughly the distance
- 10:02from our Sun to Jupiter. That's a very tight
- 10:06orbit for a red supergiant and a recipe for cosmic
- 10:10intimacy. Tidal forces are already at play, and
- 10:15simulations suggest Betelgeuse may one day engulf
- 10:18its companion entirely. If that happens, we could
- 10:22witness a kind of stellar cannibalism, the slow
- 10:26spiraling merger of two stars. Maybe within the
- 10:29next 10 ,000 years, beetle buddy could become
- 10:33one with the beast. Interestingly, this is the
- 10:37first time astronomers have directly imaged a
- 10:40close companion orbiting a red supergiant, which
- 10:43is something that was only theoretical until
- 10:46now. It shows that some of the long -term brightness
- 10:49variations we see in giant stars may not be caused
- 10:53by internal pulsations alone, but by the gravitational
- 10:57influence of a companion. stirring up their outer
- 11:01layers. Betelgeuse, which once seemed like a
- 11:04lone giant nearing the end of its life, is now
- 11:07revealed to be part of a binary system, and that
- 11:11changes the way we think about its future and
- 11:13its past. In 2027, the companion star will swing
- 11:18around to the far side of its orbit, reaching
- 11:20its maximum separation from Betelgeuse. That
- 11:24will be the next big opportunity for astronomers
- 11:27to observe and study it again, possibly with
- 11:30even greater detail. So the next time you spot
- 11:33that glowing red dot in Orion, remember, Beetlejuice
- 11:37has company. And it's not just putting on a solo
- 11:41act, it's dancing with a partner, one we've only
- 11:44just discovered after centuries of watching and
