- 0:01The development of the human being takes place in several
- 0:04successive stages, and as individuals mature they begin to
- 0:09manifest and express the powers of the nature as they
- 0:13successively come to the fore. Not every individual develops
- 0:18and expresses all the powers fully in a particular lifetime.
- 0:23For the power of the soul, the development of the psychic
- 0:27being, this can actually take many lifetimes, as the being
- 0:31generally has to go through the development, use, enjoyment and
- 0:36disillusionments that accompany the powers that develop earlier,
- 0:41before the soul can actually come forward and take charge of
- 0:45the being and its outlooks and actions.
- 0:49We are all able to identify the physical man who has a strongly
- 0:53developed physical body and is happiest undertaking actions
- 0:57that suit the physical being. At a certain stage, the vital
- 1:02man evolves and becomes highly focused on enjoyment of the
- 1:06vital forces of exercising power, influence, vital
- 1:10satisfactions and fulfillment of desires.
- 1:15The evolution of the mental man brings with it the powers of the
- 1:18rational intellect, the logical faculties and a focus on issues
- 1:24that go beyond either physical needs or vital desires, but
- 1:28enter into the realms of reflection about the world,
- 1:32their lives and the answer to the questions of where do we
- 1:36come from, how do we exist and what is our purpose?
- 1:42Through all these phases, the human individual undergoes the
- 1:46joys of success, the suffering of setbacks and defeats, and as
- 1:52that occurs, they gain rich experience that nourishes the
- 1:56soul, which for the most part remains behind the scenes as a
- 2:01secret or silent influence, or in some cases, a factor in the
- 2:06direction the individual takes as the pressure of the soul's
- 2:10emergence begins to influence the life.
- 2:15When the soul comes forward, it comes with the knowledge of its
- 2:19source, its purpose and its significance in life, and it
- 2:24orients its actions towards fulfillment of the divine
- 2:27mandate that resides within each being, Sriorbindo observes
- 2:33quote. The soul in itself contains all
- 2:36possible strength, but most of it is held behind the veil, and
- 2:41it is what comes forward in the nature that makes the
- 2:44difference. In some people the psychic
- 2:48element is strong, and in others weak.
- 2:51In some people the mind is the strongest part and governs, in
- 2:55others the vital is the strongest part and leads or
- 2:58drives. But by Sadhna the psychic being
- 3:03can be more and more brought forward, till it is dominant and
- 3:06governs the rest. If it were already governing,
- 3:10then the struggles and difficulties of the mind and
- 3:13vital would not at all be severe, for each man in the
- 3:17light of the psychic, would see and feel the truth and more and
- 3:22more follow it. End Quote.
