- 0:00Hey there, everybody, it's Jeff here. Wanted to let you know that
- 0:03we recorded this podcast episode on both Tuesday, April sixteenth, twenty twenty four,
- 0:09and also Wednesday, April seventeenth, twenty twenty four. By the time
- 0:14you hear this, some things may have changed here there. We hope you
- 0:16enjoy the show, and we hope you enjoy the new music ringing in our
- 0:21eleventh year. All right, everybody, you are listening to the Philadelphia Sports
- 0:49Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world,
- 0:53eleven years strong. This week, longtime listeners, we thank you for
- 0:58being with us for as long as you have. If you are new to
- 1:00the show, we hope you stick around. Hope you enjoy the content.
- 1:04We got a lot of Phillies talk on the way, We've got some sixers
- 1:07talk on the way, and the NFL Draft is next week and we're gonna
- 1:11be talking a lot about this Philadelphia Eagles team, the direction the front office
- 1:15wants to take this team with regard to the draft, and we've got much
- 1:19more to discuss this week. I'm Jeff Warren and I am here with my
- 1:23good buddy Len Hunsicker. Len buddy. It's great to talk to you,
- 1:26my man. Yeah, yeah, it is. We were just we just
- 1:30spent the last ten minutes talking about all of our old person ailments that are
- 1:36their start ten minutes. It was like twenty five minutes. Yeah, just
- 1:42the butchers me. Yes, all the good stuff. My nerve impingement and
- 1:47my rotator cuff and my shoulder. Fantastic fun times going to physical therapy folks.
- 1:53Oh yeah, but let I can't wait for next week. The NFL
- 1:57Draft is happening. Every every single year, US buddies and our group we
- 2:02get together hang out. We're gonna be uh down at your place, and
- 2:07I can't wait to hang out at your new house. It's gonna be fun.
- 2:10What are you gonna be doing to entertain us? I just praying that
- 2:15you guys don't do anything dumb to my house. Really, that's that's gonna
- 2:19be the main thing. You know, I could really quick when we were
- 2:23in our twenties, that would definitely be a concern. I think definitely be
- 2:27a concern. But given the past twenty five minute discussion we've had about our
- 2:30health ailments, I don't think there's gonna be a problem with anything. I
- 2:32don't. I don't think so at all. Yeah, it's funny. My
- 2:37wife was asking me, like, you know, so, what are you
- 2:39guys gonna do, and it's like, yeah, we're gonna drink and just
- 2:43bs and then probably start a movie too late and fall asleep during it.
- 2:47You know that kind of stuff. So, I mean, me and Eric
- 2:52have a kind of running thing with movie slap Shot where we would get always
- 2:54get like way drunk and then just try to put it on like it at
- 2:59like midnight or one in the morning, and then gets fifteen minutes in and
- 3:01both of us were passed out. So just a tradition like no other,
- 3:07a tradition like no other. And we're gonna keep it going this coming week.
- 3:12I'm looking forward to it for sure. And Land, Man, I
- 3:15gotta say too, buddy. You know I mentioned right at the top of
- 3:21the show eleven years doing this. Man, it's eleven years this week that
- 3:23you and I started this podcast show in my and Michelle's in my first house,
- 3:30in our basement. I always always remember that first podcast episode and how
- 3:34awfully awkward it was. We had no clue what we were doing. We've
- 3:38certainly grown over the years, man, but I do want to say it
- 3:39has been just been great to do this show with you and then with Eric,
- 3:44you know, bringing him on board a few years later. Like it's
- 3:47it's a creative outlet that I have, and I know it's there for you,
- 3:52it's there for Eric two, you know, when you guys are hopping
- 3:53on you know, basically once every other week at this point. But like,
- 3:59I just want to say, thanks Buddy for sticking with the show for
- 4:02all these years. But it's been an awesome eleven years, it really has.
- 4:05We've talked to so many great people, and I know I do the
- 4:08majority of the interviews at this point in time. Used to be on the
- 4:12interviews every now and again too when we were starting up. But it's been
- 4:15a great eleven years. And I just love our community. I love what
- 4:19we have created here at the PST Podcast Show. And quite frankly, Eric
- 4:23and I last week, you know, we were talking about how we could
- 4:26have gone and other directions and been affiliated with other podcast companies over the years,
- 4:31and I'm glad we're an independent podcast, you know, I am.
- 4:34I mean, it's definitely been an interesting couple of weeks, just kind of
- 4:40that whole landscape. Yeah, looking at seeing stuff on on Twitter or whatever.
- 4:46Yeah, and just like hearing about you know, that kind of stuff.
- 4:49And beyond the podcast, all these podcasts that we you know, I
- 4:54know, we always had a great relationship with the folks that ran them,
- 4:58and just yeah, it's sucks for them, but it's just like, yeah,
- 5:01this is what happens when you, you know, do something with a
- 5:05bigger company, and like your level of control is only so much. Yeah,
- 5:12you know, and your say of you know, whether the show goes
- 5:15on is not really your say. So. Yeah, I am very grateful
- 5:18that we are still an independent podcast here, that we are not affiliated with
- 5:24some corporate or other you know, business venture and conglomerate. I'm really happy
- 5:30about that. But in all sinceritybody, thank you for doing the show for
- 5:33all these years. You know, I very much appreciate it, the dedication
- 5:38that you and Eric have had. And yeah, let's uh, let's keep
- 5:42going forty years, how about that. We ain't gonna be lying that long.
- 5:47I know, God, if we make it another five weeks, I'll
- 5:50be happy at this point. That's all I want. Five weeks. Five
- 5:55more weeks. Okay, Look, I wish the Flyers had five more weeks
- 6:00as we're moving into the show here because five minutes, I know, you
- 6:05know, I gotta I have to say. I posted on our PST Twitter
- 6:12slash x account at Philadelphia PST for you new folks, if you're listening out
- 6:15there, just it was a fun season. You know. Yes, the
- 6:18past two weeks very disappointing in a lot of different ways, but overall,
- 6:23it was a fun season. Len. This is the foundation of the rebuild
- 6:27has been established and it was a fun hockey season and we haven't been able
- 6:31to say that about the Philadelphia Flyers in quite some time. I loved this
- 6:36season. I actually can embrace this season and be like, you know what,
- 6:41even though they dropped off a cliff like the Philadelphia Eagles did at the
- 6:45end of their their season this past year, we still were able to see
- 6:48the building blocks coming together for what the future is going to be with this
- 6:54team. And yeah, there's a lot of question marks where Danny Briere is
- 6:58going to take them and what the decisions run office is going to make.
- 7:01But at the end of the day, the foundation has been laid and it
- 7:04was a fun season and I'm always going to remember it. I just hope
- 7:08that because you know me, and you know how I am. You know
- 7:12that when when I feel like, okay, you're not contending, let's let's
- 7:16put ourselves in a position to get the best possible pick that we can.
- 7:20And so I just hope that down the line, within the next year or
- 7:27maybe two, I don't know. They have not a guarantee that they make
- 7:30the playoffs next year either, but I hope that this run that they had
- 7:34this year, I hope that they, you know, maybe get to a
- 7:38point where they can point to these games someday these past few weeks and months
- 7:42and say, hey, that time really helped us formatively in terms of,
- 7:46you know, what to expect and and you know, put us in you
- 7:48know, gave us a taste of those situations, because otherwise, what's the
- 7:54point. But I do hope that they that the players on the team got
- 7:58something out out of this season that they can you know, just have in
- 8:03their back pocket going forward and maybe not be you know, kind of a
- 8:07deer in the headlights when it comes to crunch time the next time they're in
- 8:11this kind of situation. Yeah, we're gonna be fine. What this team
- 8:15does during the off season, for sure, And with that being said,
- 8:20like, we didn't actually have anything on the agenda with regard to the Flyers
- 8:22here, folks, but wanted to just mention it since tonight, April sixteenth,
- 8:28last game of the season, the eighty second game, and we're gonna
- 8:31be talking about this Flyers team well into the future and specifically during the off
- 8:35season. But Len, let's get into some Philadelphia Phillies talk here, the
- 8:39Philadelphia Phillies, my friend. And it's interesting. We receive some listener feedback
- 8:45and email from our good friend down to South Carolina April Hershey was like she
- 8:50was writing us and she was like, how many walkoffs are they going to
- 8:54have before the offense gets going? I'm sorry, gets going to move away
- 9:00from these super tight games. And it's interesting because last week I talked to
- 9:05Tim Kelly from Phillies Nation dot com about just how this Phillies team overall needs
- 9:09more offense. We know that that's the theme right now of what is happening
- 9:13with this team. You know, thankfully, the pitching has been pretty stellar
- 9:18thus far, and in fact, today you had Ranger Suarez throwing a shutout.
- 9:24You know, Bryce Harper getting going again a bit as well. But
- 9:28Bryce Harper really, of course he's not. He he wasn't starting off the
- 9:33season the way that he wanted to. His slow start I believe has really
- 9:37been holding the Phillies offense back. I think he knew it. Interestingly enough,
- 9:45he was in a two for twenty seven slump over his last seven games.
- 9:50This is the before today's game, the April sixteenth game. Just he
- 9:54doesn't have an extra base hit in that span, and he's recorded just to
- 9:58walk. That's it. When this isn't this isn't great. You know,
- 10:03he's hitting one ninety through fifteen games, through the first fifteen games, the
- 10:07worst batting average started season since entering the league, and he hasn't hit our
- 10:11home run since April second. So I think he did in tonight's game.
- 10:16I'm sorry, Yes, he did in tonight's game. I'm sorry. Yeah,
- 10:20so yeah, So, I mean he has to get going for this
- 10:22offense to get going. Basically, we remember that he had that three home
- 10:26run game, you know, a little while back, and that was it
- 10:31up until tonight. Tonight be his fourth home run of the year, and
- 10:33that's it's you know, I hate to say it because he you know,
- 10:37he's you know, the most important person on this team, but it's not
- 10:43enough. I mean yeah, and he's got other people around him. He's
- 10:46got you know, Trey Turner's making three hundred million dollars. Real Mudo's there,
- 10:50Schreber's there. I mean, they have a lineup that you know,
- 10:54we all know can hit. But there's got to be more from him.
- 10:58So he had a double tonight home run, So hopefully we start to see
- 11:01him kind of get untracked a little bit because yeah, the ops right now
- 11:05is at like seven sixty three. Yeah, for Bryce Harper, that is
- 11:09way lows. That needs to be nine hundred are up, yep for him,
- 11:13that's the type of player he is. So yeah, I mean we
- 11:18need to see it, and we will. I mean, you know,
- 11:20and I think you're going to talk about an email that April sent us.
- 11:26I mean, yeah, I just mentioned yeah, no, I just mentioned
- 11:28that email just so you know, how many walk offs are they going to
- 11:31have before the offense gets going to move away from these super tight games.
- 11:35Well, and we're lucky, and we're lucky in that they've got the pitching
- 11:39that they've got so far. Ranger Swarez pitched in absolute gym tonighte complete game,
- 11:45shutout, struck out eight, walked one, gave up seven hits.
- 11:50I mean, just an absolute incredible game by Suarez. So yeah, they've
- 11:56been able to survive with their pitching. And then this is good word survive.
- 12:01That's what I feel like is happening with this team right now in general.
- 12:03If it's not not for the pitching, this team wouldn't be in this
- 12:07quote survival mode. Then again, then again, then I feel like,
- 12:13as frustrated as we are about the offense, this team right now is ten
- 12:16and eight. The sky is not falling by any stretch. I was going
- 12:22back and forth with somebody on Twitter about this recently, and it's like,
- 12:24you know what, yeah, it's it's not great, but like this this
- 12:30complete delusion of how this team is like completely crapping the bed, I think
- 12:35it's I don't think that's correct. The sky's not falling with this team right
- 12:39now. And I was having this conversation with somebody at work. It was
- 12:43like, oh man, they're all good too far, and it's like,
- 12:46but this is what they do. This is they always it seems like they
- 12:50always start out slow, especially hitting, and then you know, once the
- 12:52weather warms up and it gets to what, you know, Charlie Manuel called
- 12:56hitting the season. You know, the bats are going to come around.
- 12:58They always do. I just feel like the Phillies offensively and as a whole
- 13:05have never been over the past. You know, however, many years a
- 13:09house of fire to start the season. They never come out of the gates
- 13:13blazing hot, you know. So I don't know, I guess I'm not,
- 13:16as you know, concerned about it this year because I just feel like
- 13:20this is just who they are. I mean, they just start slow and
- 13:24then they'll and that's the thing. I mean, if they're if they're holding
- 13:28serve when when they're in the midst of a slow start, then theoretically once
- 13:33they get moving offensively, they should really heat up. So yeah, I
- 13:37mean, the fact that they're not sitting in like third or fourth place right
- 13:41now is a great thing with with how week the offense has been, so
- 13:46hopefully once the offense comes around, they'll really, you know, kick it
- 13:48up to another gear. At that point, absolutely, they're a game and
- 13:52a half behind the Atlanta Braves for first in the division at this point.
- 13:54There's one guy, though, Lenn that I wanted to mention as well,
- 13:58and he is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the most important
- 14:01person on this team. But when the Phillies acquired him in the offseason,
- 14:05I was very excited about it given his past and how he has helped other
- 14:09teams. And that's Whit Maryfield. But my gosh, Maryfield is hitting at
- 14:13this point. His slash line one oh seven one sixty seven, one oh
- 14:20seven in thirty one played appearances in ten games, with no extra base hits,
- 14:24no RBIs he Oh my gosh. He has started five games in left
- 14:28field, two at third base, and one at second base. And at
- 14:33this point it's like Wit Maryfield is completely lost and it seems like he has
- 14:39completely forgotten how to swing a bat. And again, not the most important
- 14:43personnel within this within the structure of the Philadelphia Phillies, but brought in as
- 14:50an insurance policy. This insurance policy really isn't working out early here, and
- 14:56again, like we're saying, it's early, the sky isn't falling here.
- 14:58Can Wit ma Field turn things around? Of course he can. There's time
- 15:01to do it. But man, that insurance policy that we were talking about,
- 15:07I think that's kind of out the door at this point here in April
- 15:11yeah, I mean he look he is brought in is like kind of that
- 15:13super sub kind of thing, like you know, you can play all these
- 15:16different positions. So I knew he was going to get a good amount of
- 15:20the bats because you know, this is a guy where Okay, this guy
- 15:22needs a day off, we'll put Maryfield in there, because that's the kind
- 15:26of player he is. Defensively, you can plug him into different places and
- 15:30give guys a rest, and that's an important, you know, thing to
- 15:33have on a team. I mean, it's great when you can have a
- 15:35guy like that that can cover so much different ground defensively. But yeah,
- 15:39he's got to start hitting because if you're i mean at that point, you
- 15:43know, you're you're putting him into your lineup as a detriment at a different
- 15:48position every day. If he's not hitting, and what's the point, you
- 15:52know, if he's not going to hit, then you got to start looking
- 15:54at other options maybe, you know, I mean obviously I don't know,
- 16:00maybe so so more if Bow needs to move over to first, or if
- 16:03he needs a day off. I mean, but yeah, they really,
- 16:07I mean, he hasn't really given them much of anything at this point.
- 16:11He really hasn't. It's the it's it's it's a kick in the nuts in
- 16:17a way. But on the flip side of things, you have a player
- 16:22in Brandon Marsh who's been one of the few bright spots, you know,
- 16:26from an offensive standpoint thus far. His his splits. My gosh, he's
- 16:30batting two eighty eight three h nine, five seventy seven, four home runs,
- 16:36a double, a triple in sixteen games. I mean, he has
- 16:41struck out twenty one of his fifty five played appearances while only walking twice.
- 16:47But Lynn, he's been the bright spot in terms of this offense and it's
- 16:51really great to see. And I think that while we continue to harp on,
- 16:56you know, like I just thought I was just harping on whit Maryfield.
- 16:59You know, we were harping on Bryce Harper, and yes, he
- 17:02had a home run in today's game. But like when it comes to Brandon
- 17:07Marsh, when it comes to Alec Bohm, who I think is one of
- 17:08the is the under the radar story of this season thus far. His consistency
- 17:14that he has given this team throughout all the all the starts that he's been
- 17:19out on the field and in the batter's Box. He's doing some damn good
- 17:23stuff too. Again, this just goes with my theme here within our conversation
- 17:26that the sky is not falling. There is some talent here. If Bryce
- 17:30Harper gets going, I think the rest of this team does as well.
- 17:33And following the lead too of Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh. Yeah, and
- 17:37Marsh did this last year too. He got off to a really really good
- 17:41start and played really well and he did eventually kind of tail off a little
- 17:45bit. We'll see if he can. I don't expect to maintain this pace
- 17:49forever. He will cool off eventually. I mean, it's just the law
- 17:52of averages over a long season. But maybe he can kind of not fall
- 17:56off as precipitously as he did last year and kind of maintain good numbers throughout
- 18:02the season. You know, this is a guy that you know he's he's
- 18:04in that he's in his prime. Now you're looking at guys like him and
- 18:08Boom and uh and Stott, and that's where you're going to get your guys
- 18:14making their leap from I mean, we know what Harper is, we know
- 18:18what real Mudo is at this point, we know what Trey Turner is at
- 18:22this point. But can those guys, the Bohms, the stats, the
- 18:26Marshes, can they unlock another level in their game and you know, become
- 18:32you know, an All Star and contribute even more to the lineup. I
- 18:36mean, that's that's really where this team is going to make its gains if
- 18:38it does this year. Yep, absolutely well. From a pitching standpoint,
- 18:41to Lenn, we've got Rangers Suarez with three wins on the season thus far.
- 18:48In terms of team leaders, he's also his era is one point seventy
- 18:52three. Zach Wheeler, he's got thirty strikeouts. In terms of saves,
- 18:57Jose Alvarado has two, and Sir Anthony Domingus has three holes. If it's
- 19:03not for this pitching being as good as it has been thus far, this
- 19:07team is really really gonna be crap in the bed here. But we've been
- 19:11seeing a very consistent bullpen. We've been seeing some really good arms or I
- 19:15should say, some pitches coming from Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler and of course,
- 19:19like I just mentioned Ranger Suarez as well Spencer Turnbull. It's gonna be
- 19:23interesting, you know that the Taiwan Walker situation whenever, that's gonna happen.
- 19:27That's probably something the Phillies are kind of like, well, we hope we
- 19:32don't have to deal with this for for another week or two or maybe three
- 19:36weeks. We don't want to know if we want to deal with this situation
- 19:37because Spencer has been been performing well on the mound as well, So I
- 19:42uh, I don't know. It's it's it's a good situation, a good
- 19:45problem to have that this this Phillies pitching staff's been doing damn well. Yeah,
- 19:52I mean, you hope with with Turnbull, I mean, maybe he
- 19:55can hold or maintain until either Walker is right go or you know, maybe
- 20:00if if you know, Mick Abele or somebody like that is you know,
- 20:06has you know, strings together some good starts in the minors, maybe they're
- 20:08ready by the middle of the season they can come up and help as well.
- 20:12But yeah, I mean, it'll be interesting to see what Turnbull gives
- 20:15them. I knew Nola had a really good start the other night, and
- 20:18then Suarez in the in the beginning of the broadcast tonight, they said he
- 20:23was like second or third in the league in whip walks and hits per innings
- 20:27pitched. Yeah, and he had you know, he gave up eight base
- 20:32runners over nine innings tonight, So I mean that that just I mean,
- 20:34that'll that'll keep those numbers right where they are. I mean, he had
- 20:37a really really good game tonight. I mean, man, that's that's what
- 20:44you really want to see out of this guy. I mean, I've been
- 20:47super impressed with him so far. Absolutely, and again Spencer Turnbull uh one
- 20:52point eight zero e r a fantastic in three games, just just fantastic.
- 20:57He and Ranger doing some great stuff. So you got anything else for the
- 21:02Phillies, buddy, before we take our first break here and before we get
- 21:06into some sixers talk, just at the schedule right now for them is pretty
- 21:11favorable. Good. You've got the Rockies in town, who are, you
- 21:15know, just one of the worst run organizations in baseball. I mean there's
- 21:22no getting around that they are, you know, and then I believe they
- 21:26have the White Sox up next, who are not a you know, they're
- 21:29kind of a floundering organization as well. So you've got a chance to really
- 21:33pick up some wins at home here coming up before you get on the road
- 21:37going to Cincinnati. Actually, they have a pretty decent home there road trip
- 21:41coming up starting on April twenty second. Here you know, four games in
- 21:47Cincinnati, three in San Diego, and then three in Anaheim against the Angels,
- 21:52so it'll be good to take in banks and wins here before they get
- 21:56on the road. Absolutely great way to end our Phillies talk here before heading
- 22:02into the break. If you're new to listening to us, subscribe on whatever

- 22:49Sports Table. We're gonna take quick break right now. We'll be back in
- 22:52just a bit. All right, we are back, and Lynn, let's
- 22:57get into a disc about this Philadelphia seventy six Ers team and the postseason,
- 23:03that is, if they make it past the play game and potentially face the
- 23:08New York Knicks in the first round, and what we're gonna specifically be watching
- 23:14as it pertains to this team. So just letting folks know we're gonna know
- 23:18whether or not the Sixers are in that first round of the playoffs by the
- 23:23time you're hearing this, So this entire conversation, you may just want to
- 23:29hit that forward button. Folks. If the Sixers lose to the freaking Heat,
- 23:33and there are a lot of folks that the Sixers may lose to the
- 23:37Heat, they if they do lose, they still have another chance. This
- 23:41is just for the seventh seeds. Oh that's right, yeah, yes,
- 23:44Why am I thinking it's one and done here? No, it is not.
- 23:45If they lose this game, then they go on. That's right.
- 23:49The winner of the other of the nine to ten matchup and then I mean
- 23:55I would rather them win this game because if they win, they play the
- 23:56Knicks, right, which Knicks are good team. I mean they are They're
- 24:00not a pushover by any stretch, or the second seed for a reason.
- 24:03But if they lose and then win the next game, then they have to
- 24:07play the Celtics, who Lol, this happens every year in the playoffs.
- 24:12They lose to the Celtics. So yeah, I think we know what's gonna
- 24:15happen if they end up in that eight seed. Absolutely, all right,
- 24:18Yeah, I completely got mixed up for some reason. I know, I
- 24:22hasn't been the greatest day, folks. I've been eating a crap sandwich all
- 24:26day, all right, So why don't we Should we just talk about this,
- 24:30lenn as though the I don't want to jinx anything considering the game is
- 24:34gonna happen, Like when we drop this on Thursday, the Wednesday night game
- 24:37against the Heat is already gonna happen. Should we talk about the possibilities of
- 24:42them playing the Knicks? Yeah? Why not? I mean it looks I
- 24:45mean, they they've got in bed, and I know, look, Miami
- 24:51always is going to scare me in terms of a playoff matchup. It just
- 24:55feels like they always make a run no matter what seed they are, Yeah,
- 25:00one of those teams. But listen, and I know that it's been
- 25:03a you know, a tough road without MBAT, but he's back, and
- 25:07you know this is okay. You you are the reigning MVP at least for
- 25:11another couple of days here, you know, until they crown a new one.
- 25:15It's you know, this is why you're here. You know, is
- 25:18to is to win this game. And my expectation is that between him and
- 25:25an all star in Tyrese Maxi, and you know, some of the other
- 25:27guys they have on the team, they should be able to win this game.
- 25:32I will be like I said, he'd scare me, but I will
- 25:36be disappointed if they don't win this game. They should win this game.
- 25:40They should win the game. And if they do win the game, they're
- 25:41gonna play the Knicks. And I think let's kind of just talk about Knicks
- 25:45versus six Ers, maybe advantages we see for maybe both teams here. Why
- 25:52don't we do that because again, this could be this could be a useless
- 25:56conversation when we drop this show. But look, I think that when you
- 26:03look at this Sixers roster. You look at the the Knicks roster, Philly
- 26:08has a lot of guys who can match up against Jalen Brunson. I think
- 26:12Kelly Oubre is a bit of a I think he is a good natural matchupd
- 26:17Anthony Melton is going to be a pretty good matchup against Brunson as well,
- 26:22Nick Batoom as well, and they can put Kyle Lowry on him as well.
- 26:26I think they can even put Tyrese Maxy on him too. Brunson is
- 26:30shooting forty one percent from the floor twenty nine for seventy two in three games
- 26:36against the Sixers this season, so those numbers are really heavily influenced by Jalen
- 26:41Brunson going six for twenty two shooting against the Sixers on March tenth, just
- 26:48a little bit over a month ago. He played well, he shot efficiently,
- 26:52and the other two regular season games the Knicks one. However, I
- 26:56think this is this is a Knicks team that's got holes in it, and
- 27:00I think that that the Sixers can certainly take advantage. And again, it's
- 27:03all going to depend on matchups, and I think that when it comes to
- 27:07matching up against Jalen Brunson. This Sixers team is going to have what it
- 27:11takes to match up against him. Yeah, no, I do agree.
- 27:15We'll listen. Bronson's he's a better player than I thought he was going to
- 27:22be coming out of Villanova. I thought he was going to be a good
- 27:23player. I thought he was going to be a guy that had a long
- 27:27NBA career who you know, definitely was going to be in the league for
- 27:33a decade at least. Yeah, I did not think he would be this
- 27:37good. So yeah, I mean, he's been really good this year.
- 27:42And listen, the Knicks have They're three and one against the Sixers this year,
- 27:47so you know, it's not like, you know, oh, okay,
- 27:48well we're just going to go in and beat the Knicks because they're I
- 27:52mean, I wonder if if people, you know, you have that because
- 27:57the Knicks have just been down for so long and they've just been you know,
- 28:02considered a dysfunctional organization for so long. So the fact that they're now
- 28:07there and competent feels new, and maybe people aren't giving them the credit they
- 28:12deserve. But that's a good team. But again, you've got a guy
- 28:18that was the MVP last year. You know, that was kind of The
- 28:22Sixers were doing really well when he was in the lineup and all yeah fell
- 28:26off when you know they they dropped pretty precipitously in the in the standings once
- 28:33he went out. So now he's back, you're gonna have him. We're
- 28:36gonna have MAXI, you're gonna have Uber, You're gonna have healed. I
- 28:38mean, you've got no shortage of offensive options. It's been in these guys,
- 28:44and if they can lock these guys down defensively, then I think you've
- 28:48got something and I think it's gonna be competitive series. It wouldn't surprise me
- 28:52to see the Sixers win the series. But by no means like I don't.
- 28:57I'm not saying, oh, they're going to win the case, say
- 29:00I have Embiid, but you know they have everything they need to be there
- 29:04because they've got him. I think what And this may just sound like common
- 29:10sense and you may be like, yeah, duh, Jeff, but tiring
- 29:14out Joe El Embiid, and given the fact that he's coming back from this
- 29:18injury, I think that's what the Knicks are going to end up trying to
- 29:21do. You know, can you make it a ninety four foot game.
- 29:25I mean, the Knicks don't play from what I've seen, the Knicks don't
- 29:27play with a lot of pace, but at times during stretches against Milwaukee and
- 29:34Boston recently, they have played with a lot of pace. Look, the
- 29:38Knicks rank thirtieth in pace, but it's they seem to play faster against Philadelphia
- 29:45this season here, you know, And I think what they're going to try
- 29:48to do is just tire and beat out you know. I mean, put
- 29:52put him beat in every single pick and roll, you know, and you
- 29:56know with his conditioning right now, you put him in pick and rolls consistently.
- 30:03And I think that's gonna that's specifically going to help out the Knicks.
- 30:07They're going to try to tire out Joel Embiid if that happens, gets to
- 30:11the fourth quarter and uh, you know, can again, can they make
- 30:15it a ninety four foot game? I think that's a that's a possibility,
- 30:18and I would say advantage Nicks if they're going to be able to do that.
- 30:22It's an interesting idea. I mean, I do think that that Embiid
- 30:26coming back when he did will allow him to knock off a little bit of
- 30:30the of the rust and get the conditioning up a little bit. I think
- 30:37they've had a couple of games where they probably played him more minutes than they
- 30:41wanted to. But I do think he's kind of been able to slowly work
- 30:45himself back in. Do I think he's all the way back to one hundred
- 30:48percent conditioning wise, I don't know. Maybe not, but I you know,
- 30:53it's not like he's okay. These are going to be his first games
- 30:56back. I mean, he's at least had a chance to slightly work himself
- 31:00back in. So hopefully that's less of an issue than than you know,
- 31:04you think it might be. I don't know it's possible, but yeah,
- 31:08it's just hopefully we can avoid, you know, the fluky elbow like in
- 31:15the Toronto Series a couple of years ago, and it's just always something with
- 31:18him in the playoffs of getting hurt. Hopefully we can just avoid that and
- 31:22just have a nice healthy run for once in our lives within beating in the
- 31:27playoffs, please God, you know. So, we'll see what happens.
- 31:32We'll see what happens again, folks, as we drop this Thursday morning,
- 31:37you know, we have no idea what's going to happen with regard to the
- 31:40play in and you know, this may all be for naught, but I
- 31:44don't know, do you have anything else and that you're specifically going to be
- 31:47watching for as it pertains to this potential matchup here, Lynn, I do
- 31:52want to see. Sorry, it just took a uh oh, sorry the
- 31:56cutch off guard there. I just took a big swig of whiskey. So
- 32:00it kind of just going down the wrong pipe. All right, Sorry about
- 32:06that problem. It's it's I do I do want to see, you know,
- 32:10Okay, this was this year was kind of a coming out party for
- 32:15for Tyrese Maxey, and I want to see, you know, after all
- 32:17of that how playoff Maxie looks as he you know, as he's now an
- 32:23established guy. Obviously this is still Joel Embiid's team, but how much does
- 32:29he defer to him? How much does he you know? Okay, I
- 32:32trust you go ahead and take these shots and and you know be that guy.
- 32:38You know. I want to see how much he can spread his wings
- 32:42in this in this playoff. I love that I do, I you know,
- 32:45because this is going to end up being more and more of his team
- 32:50as the years roll on. And look, he was given the keys.
- 32:54He was given the keys to this offense when Joel Embiid was out. We
- 32:59saw some good things from him, you know, we saw some challenges,
- 33:01some struggles here and there. But I think that's a really good thing for
- 33:07us to be looking at as we uh, you know, as we hope
- 33:08the Sixers are going to be moving it well into these this playoff pictures.
- 33:13So all right, well, Lynn, why don't we, uh, why
- 33:15don't we move on to the Philadelphia Eagles here? Before I let you go,
- 33:21A lot's going on this past week with regard to Eagles Nation. When
- 33:25Devonte Smith was given that contract extension, Yes, oh my gosh, I
- 33:30was so excited about it. I read an article from our friend of the
- 33:35pod, Ed Kratz from Eagles Uh with Eagles Today at uh at s I,
- 33:44and oh my gosh. He he wrote. He's like, this is
- 33:46why it is so complex to get Davonte Smith the contract extension. Blah blah
- 33:52blah, he wrote. He writes this article and I'm not kidding. Two
- 33:55hours later, it's like the extension is announced, the three year, seventy
- 34:00five million dollar extension, fifty one million dollars guaranteed. I'm happy because Mike
- 34:07Kelly Green, Davonte Smith jersey that I got for Christmas this past year.
- 34:12Len, that's gonna be good to go now for at least another few years.
- 34:15Well, there you go, exactly. But at the end of the
- 34:19day, this Eagles team has now set in stone one of the most prolific
- 34:25wide receiver corps and yes, with two guys Davante Smith and Aj Brown,
- 34:34for the foreseeable future. And it's a great thing. It's a beautiful thing.
- 34:38But what I wanted to also mention too is, aside from Devonte's Smith's
- 34:43contract extension, when we get your thoughts on that, Len, but the
- 34:45Eagles have locked up through twenty twenty six the following players Jalen Hurts, AJ
- 34:52Brown, Davante Smith, Saquon Barkley, Jordan Mailatta, Landon Dickerson, Lane
- 34:58Johnson, Jalen Carter, Ice Huff, CJ Gardner, Johnson, Sidney Brown,
- 35:02Nolan Smith, Keeley Ringo, and Jake Elliott. That that's a strong
- 35:07group of really, really good football players. And it leads me to believe
- 35:13that this Eagles team in this offseason has been pretty darn productive and it's been
- 35:17going really well for the for what this upcoming season may be. And I'm
- 35:22gonna be talking to Shane haff In a little bit about this, but I'm
- 35:27like, I'm just really excited going into this draft next week about where this
- 35:30team's going. Anyway, we want to get to Devonte Smith and that contract
- 35:34extension. Yeah, I mean, it's a damn good start. I mean,
- 35:37in terms of all the people that you just mentioned there, having all
- 35:40that lockdown for a while is a great thing, and especially with you know,
- 35:45you look at Okay, these are the free agents that are coming out
- 35:49in terms of wide receivers. You got you know, Jefferson in Minnesota,
- 35:53You've got Cidy Lamb. I know, there's a couple other guys in there,
- 35:57and it's Mark Chase, yeah, Jamar Chase. So the fact that
- 36:00you got your guys locked up and you don't have to worry about, you
- 36:04know, a big discussion with them being free agency down the road. It's
- 36:07just one last thing you got to worry about. So I was really happy
- 36:10to see them get him taken care of. And that's just something you don't
- 36:15have to worry about all that when that time comes. Exactly for a little
- 36:20bit, yep, exactly. Yeah, I mean, I think you know
- 36:22a lot of those names that you mentioned were on the offensive end. So
- 36:28I have expectations for this draft. Yeah, well, let's get into it
- 36:32here. What we're looking for from the Eagles at the draft next week when
- 36:36we're going to be watching at your house, Like what overall? From a
- 36:38theme, I guess perspective, Like you're thinking, Okay, defense, defense,
- 36:43defense, that's what you're thinking. Yes, that was one hundred percent
- 36:46what I'm thinking. I have seen a few mock drafts where it's just like,
- 36:52oh, the offensive tackle Mims from Georgia. Yeah, Lane Johnson's getting
- 36:57any younger, And yes, I understand that that is true, and yes
- 37:01you will need to replace him. You you don't have a defense like you
- 37:07saw what happened. I mean you do. Have you brought Gardner Johnson back,
- 37:13which I liked. You know, you have, you know some guys
- 37:15that you've drafted, but at the same time, you know your cornerbacks are
- 37:20both old. One of them fell off a cliff last year in Bradbury.
- 37:23Like, you need to shore this up offensively, You've got all the weapons.
- 37:30Defensively, you need to shore this up. Don't get cute, don't
- 37:36all we're planning for two or three years just down the road. How about
- 37:38your plan for this year? How about you planning for a deep playoff run
- 37:43this year? Get strong defensively, Let's let's do this. Let's not mess
- 37:49around and get too cute for two years down the road. I completely agree,
- 37:53I do, and I'm gonna be talking to Shane Haffen a little bit
- 37:55about it. Len. Part of me thinks that, just based off what
- 38:00we've seen Howie Roseman do over all these years, that it's going to be
- 38:04a trenches pick with that number twenty two overall pick, or if he moves
- 38:07up, if he decides, you know, he's gonna move up a couple
- 38:09spots again an offensive lineman maybe you know, maybe Chop Robinson is going to
- 38:15be there. They from Penn State and they take him. But really,
- 38:19I I A large part of me wants how he to draft a cornerback for
- 38:23the future. As you just mentioned, James Bradbury fell off a cliff.
- 38:27The thing is that, Jeff, you're not drafting a cornerback for the future.
- 38:30You gotta draft him for right friggin now? Yeah, yeah, Like
- 38:36stop thinking about the future. Start like your playoff, your window with this
- 38:40all with these offensive players that you have. You were just in the super
- 38:45Bowl, not this year, but last year. Your window is now.
- 38:49Stop thinking about the future. Yes, I want sustained excellence too, but
- 38:54you should. You're you're you're one of those teams. You're right there.
- 38:59But I don't know. That's yes, I but I don't know based on
- 39:02again, this comes down to money. It comes down to contract years,
- 39:06things like that. James Berry, James Bradbury signing that contract last year spring
- 39:10twenty twenty three. That's not going anywhere and it's gonna be impossible for them
- 39:16to trade him or get rid of him. He's going to be out there
- 39:21on the field. I think, like that's the reality. And the Eagles
- 39:23and defensive coordinator new defensive coordinator is gonna be like, you know what,
- 39:27we're gonna we gotta go with him. Just throw up our hands and say
- 39:30burn us no, not necessarily, we got what. Like I said,
- 39:32That's why I'm hoping that they draft a cornerback and maybe throughout training camp whatever,
- 39:37the first round cornerback is just is amazing and they're like, yeah,
- 39:39we got to start him over Bradbury. But Bradbury and every now and then.
- 39:43I mean, let's let's put ourselves in a position to do that.
- 39:45Yeah, rather than just say, well Bradbury signed through whatever, let's draft
- 39:50another offensive lineman. Yeah, Like that is the stuff that's gonna burn me
- 39:54up. It's so interesting how I went to that, Okay, we gotta
- 39:59draft for the future, and you were like, no, no, no,
- 40:01let's do it now because we are so ingrained as Eagles fans to think
- 40:07like that, because this is a team, an organization that usually do not
- 40:12tend to start even their first round picks. Yeah. Jalen Carter, he
- 40:16was kind of an anomaly. Uh, you know, he started a lot
- 40:19during the course of this past year, kind of had to after they got
- 40:22rid of uh he went out to San Francisco. Why am I forgetting his
- 40:28name? Yes, Javon Hargrave, And uh, you know, very rarely
- 40:35do you see that first round pick start for this Eagles organization on either side
- 40:39of the ball. So I'm just so conditioned lend to thinking like that,
- 40:44which is why I was like, oh, we got all think for the
- 40:45future. You know, it's they've done this to us. You're you're there,
- 40:49You're there right now. Yeah, you're you're one of the top teams
- 40:52in the NFL right now. Yep, stop thinking about it. And and
- 40:58the other thing is all right, Georgia, guys, you're you're, you
- 41:01got this awesome reputation. I want to I mean, Carter was had a
- 41:07real nice year, fell off a little bit at the end. But Jordan
- 41:10Davis, Nolan Smith, Na, Kobe Dean, let's see it, let's
- 41:15go. Yeah. Otherwise, you know, you know, look, I'm
- 41:19not saying old draft anybody from a school because these guys haven't panned out,
- 41:22but like, okay, you guys were part of a historically great defense together.
- 41:28Let's see that translate to the next level. Yeah, I will tell
- 41:30everybody this. Go back in the podcast feed, listen to the PST special
- 41:36from this past week here where I spoke to Matt Waldman, one of the
- 41:39best NFL and college scouts in the entire nation, and I was very,
- 41:45very honored and humbled. You know, he's been coming on the show for
- 41:49the past few years to talk to us about draft prospects and just talking to
- 41:52us in detail about how these guys translate from the ranks to the NFL,
- 42:01how it isn't always as easy based on the skills that they have and what
- 42:07they specifically need to do, and how they need to break certain habits,
- 42:10and how it was interesting len how what these guys do in the field,
- 42:15it's like an art form and it's tough to sometimes break your art form,
- 42:20and how you've always done your art in different situations, in different scenarios.
- 42:25It was a really interesting conversation and topic. I would highly recommend folks listening
- 42:30to this right now listen to that interview that I did with Matt Waldman because
- 42:35it was it was a fantastic interview. But Buddy, I'm with you.
- 42:37I hope from a defensive perspective, we see a lot of defensive players taken
- 42:42in this draft. That's what I'm hoping the theme is going to be.
- 42:45Yeah, I mean, we got to get some guys in here and see
- 42:49what's six And look, I know, I know that relying on rookies is
- 42:52kind of a fool's Errand sometimes I get it. You're asking a lot for
- 42:59these guys come in and learn the playbook and all that stuff. It's a
- 43:02lot for a rookie. I understand that. But listen, the guys that
- 43:07are on the outside, on the corners right now. I mean, Sleigh
- 43:10is still good. You will see him get burnt from time to time.
- 43:14It will happen. It has happened, you know, every now and again
- 43:17over the past couple of years. But you know, Bradbury has already fallen
- 43:22off the cliff. What if Slay does too, like then then you're down
- 43:27to no corners that you trust unless Ringo or Hicks or is that his name,
- 43:31Eli Hicks or yeah for rect Sorry, unless one of these guys you
- 43:37know, takes a massive step forward, then you suddenly you're you're just getting
- 43:44toasted by everybody's one and two receivers on the outside. So I just I
- 43:50worry about that stuff, all right. Good way to end our Eagles discussion
- 43:54here. Before we get to our break, we got more Eagles talk coming
- 43:59your way. Shane from Edge of Philly Sports and the on the Shane Page
- 44:05podcast. He's gonna join us for a discussion about the upcoming NFL Draft and
- 44:08how these Eagles you know, may look to bolster various positions and units on
- 44:13this team. Shane was with the BGN Radio podcast for some time. We
- 44:17wanted to bring them on board here this week talk about some draft talk and
- 44:22Eagles offseason as well. We're gonna get to that in just a bit.
- 44:25Lend buddy. Any final thoughts before I let you go, No, not
- 44:30really, I don't. All right, sounds good, but I think the
- 44:34next time you and I are gonna be talking, it's gonna be it's gonna
- 44:37be next week at your place watching this draft. And I don't I don't
- 44:43even know if we're gonna do any show stuff. I don't think we did
- 44:45last year. Actually, I know sometimes year to year we would do some
- 44:47draft stuff for the show. I'm not sure if we're gonna do that this
- 44:50year, but uh yeah, we'll see how it goes. Looking forward to
- 44:52seeing you, buddy, and uh yeah, you take care any again.
- 44:59No final thoughts were, yeah, don't destroy my house. Guys. All
- 45:01right, sounds good. We're gonna take a break, folks. We'll be
- 45:05back in just a bit. All right, We are back, and let's

- 45:43it is great to see you here on zoom. I'm so very grateful that
- 45:45you took the time to jump on the PSD podcast show with us this week.
- 45:49My friend, Yeah, Jeff, always happy to come on and talk,
- 45:52especially around draft time. Yes, it feels like been building up to
- 45:57this since gosh, since September. I mean, yeah, do it.
- 46:00I did a weekly bign draft show throughout the season, and you know,
- 46:04we've got our draft board out and now it's you know, you make the
- 46:07rounds and you talk about guys and the next week and a half is going
- 46:10to be crazy. But I'm so happy to come on and talk with you
- 46:14about the Eagles offseason and their draft potential. Again, we appreciate it,
- 46:17and I really wanted to start off our discussion Shane getting into this Eagles off
- 46:22season in general, I personally feel like it's been one where some really great
- 46:28moves have been made during free agency. You know, we've seen some trades,
- 46:31and then there's a number of contract extensions that have been doled out by
- 46:35Howie Roseman as well, most recently Davonte Smith. Lenn and I were just
- 46:38talking about that a short time ago here, And despite the letdown Shane of
- 46:45last season, after that monumental collapse, it still feels like this team heading
- 46:51into this twenty twenty four season are they're going to be competitive once again in
- 46:54the NFC. Overall, those are the fields, Those are the vibes that
- 46:58I am getting here, and I think a lot of folks within Eagles Nation
- 47:00are getting as this offseason is moving along here. How would you assess this
- 47:05Eagles offseason here? And specifically, what do you see as basically the theme
- 47:09of this Eagles offseason? What are your thoughts here? I think the theme
- 47:14of the offseason has been all about youth. I think the Eagles realized down
- 47:19the stretch last season, which we don't have to talk about because that's still
- 47:22a sore spot. Yes, I think they realized they were too old and
- 47:27slow, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, and so you saw
- 47:30them make big investments into both sides of the ball, but especially the defense
- 47:35and into youth. You know, you go get Bryce Huff from the Jets.
- 47:37He's twenty six years old. Yeah, you bring Chauncey Gardner Johnson back
- 47:42from Detroit and he's only twenty six years old, and he's got that he's
- 47:45got that edge, you know that you want to bring to your defense.
- 47:47And you go get at Devin White. And I'm not the biggest Devin White
- 47:52fan, but Giman White's twenty six years old and he's actually a linebacker and
- 47:57he's fast, and you know, so you bring that speed, you inject
- 48:00that in and then on the offensive side of the ball, you go prioritize
- 48:04Saquon Barkley, who will talk about more later on in the show, but
- 48:07he's only twenty seven and you know, maybe we shouldn't say only twenty seven
- 48:10because in running back years, that's maybe more mid thirties. But you get
- 48:15the extension with DeVante Smith that just breaks a day or two ago, and
- 48:19Land and Dickerson earlier and they're both twenty five, and so you know,
- 48:22the Eagles are investing heavily into youth, and it's been a off season of
- 48:29reloading and sort of pushing those chips into the table and you know, especially
- 48:32when you compare it to the rest of the NFC East. I mean,
- 48:36you look at the Cowboys, who're your main competition, and the Cowboys lost
- 48:39two of their starting offensive linemen, and then they lost two pass rushers who
- 48:44combined for nearly seven hundred snaps last year. Yeah, and they lost their
- 48:47starting running back and they've added virtually nothing. All while the Dak Prescott deal
- 48:52looms and you can't franchise tag him and so he could potentially be a free
- 48:57agent and Ceedee Lamb wants a deal in your fifth you're optioning Micah Parsons at
- 49:00a position he does not play, so you can save three million dollars.
- 49:05And you know, the Cowboys add nothing. They added Eric Kendricks and so
- 49:08you know, you look at them, and you look at the Commanders,
- 49:12and you know they had the most cap space in the NFL, and they
- 49:15made a ton of signings. Yes, and are they are they even decent?
- 49:19Like Dan Quinn overpaid for Dorance Armstrong because he was from Dallas, and
- 49:23then he went out and gets Dante Fowler and it's like he just signed everybody
- 49:28that he's ever been on a team with before. And I just didn't like
- 49:30the approach, Like their offensive line isn't good, they don't have a good
- 49:35pass catcher. They signed twenty free agents and spend one hundred and sixty million
- 49:39dollars. Who's the best player they signed. It's for probably Frankie Lubu and
- 49:45I like him, but I don't think they accomplished anything. And you know,
- 49:49the Giants are just timorrhaging talent and Xavier McKinnon and Saquon Barkley, and
- 49:53they got good value on the Brian Burns trade, I think, but QB's
- 49:58paramount for that team, and I I don't know that they can get one
- 50:00in this draft. And so you look around at the rest of the division
- 50:04and it makes you feel even better about what I think was a really good
- 50:07offseason for the Eagles so far. Absolutely, when we look at these other
- 50:10teams, as you're mentioning here in the NFC East, what is their foundation?
- 50:15What is their foundation? Folks? I don't believe that you can logically
- 50:20say that the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, New York Giants have that solid
- 50:23foundation that the Eagles do have. What Shane was just talking about in terms
- 50:28of youth, in terms of making smart strategic investments in players that are extremely
- 50:34talented or going to be around for a while. And you mentioned one guy
- 50:37in particular. As we're moving along here, Shane CJ. Gardner Johnson,
- 50:42I mean bringing back CJ. Gardner Johnson. I mean that has actually been
- 50:45my favorite move thus far during this offseason, just based on the extremely tough
- 50:51situation that the Eagles defensive backfield found themselves in last year. On a number
- 50:55of occasions, in a number of games, they were a detriment to this
- 51:00team. So I'm wondering, I love CJ. Gardner Johnson, it's great
- 51:04that he's back, But what has been your favorite move that the front office
- 51:07has made thus far this offseason? And why? Yeah, I liked bringing
- 51:13Chauncey Gardner Johnson back, and that's not the one I'll talk about, Okay,
- 51:15I did. I jokingly tweeted when that signing broke, I tweeted,
- 51:21that's great, Now go sign a safety. Yeah, because I would love
- 51:24to get Johncey Gardner Johnson into the slot. I think that's where he's best
- 51:29fit. But you know, obviously people didn't like that and it was set
- 51:32a little tongue in cheek, But I'm glad he's back, but I'm gonna
- 51:35say it's Saquon Barkley. All right. Uh So, first let's start with
- 51:38the contract, because that's the thing everybody's like, you know, was worried
- 51:44about. But Howie paying thirty seven points seventy five million dollars to a running
- 51:47back over three years is unheard of. I didn't think it was gonna happen.
- 51:52I honestly didn't think it was gonna happen. Literally, like three hours
- 51:54before that, I tweeted out when the rumors were abound that the signing may
- 51:59actually happen. I'm like, there is no way. This is not Howie
- 52:01Roseman structure, This is not his philosophy. There is no way they're paying
- 52:06a running back this Three hours later, what do I know? What the
- 52:09hell do I know? I'm just a fan, Yeah, I said when
- 52:12that was coming out, I said, I will believe how he pays a
- 52:15running back that when I see it. Yep. And then people were old
- 52:19takes exposing me. A couple hours later, I said, listen, I
- 52:22didn't say it will never happen. I didn't say there's a zero percent chance.
- 52:25I said I'll believe it when I see it. I see it now,
- 52:28I believe it. So let's not get too far over our skis here.
- 52:30But he's not really paying that. So the cap hit this year's three
- 52:35point eight million dollars, Next year it's thirteen and a half, and then
- 52:38in twenty twenty six it's fifteen and a half. But he could be moved
- 52:42on from after two seasons with an eight point four million dollar dead cap hit
- 52:45that could be split over two seasons. So the contract is not bad at
- 52:50all. Yep. So now let's talk about the player. The Saquon had
- 52:52a down year last year. It is important to contextualize that and say he
- 52:58was working with a bottom five offensive line, a bottom three quarterback situation,
- 53:04probably a bottom five wide receiver room, and so you would expect his rushing
- 53:07efficiency to be down, and it was. But he's still a better runner
- 53:12than DeAndre Swift. And this isn't the you know, a player's gone,
- 53:15so now I'm gonna say he's bad, and the new player that was on
- 53:19a division rival, now I'm going to say he's good. I've said Saquon's
- 53:22really good for a long time. I'm not saying Swift is a bad player.
- 53:25Saquon's simply better. Saquon averaged nineteen percent more rushing yards after contact per
- 53:32carry last year, two point nine to one versus two point four to four,
- 53:37and he had two hundred and thirty four percent more rushing yards over expectation
- 53:42point three nine versus point or negative point two nine. And so he adds
- 53:46a lot as a runner. He simply didn't have the luxury of running behind
- 53:51the offensive line with the passing weapons that the Eagles have, So I expect
- 53:54him to have a really good year and rushing game aside. He adds a
- 53:58ton to the passing game, both as a blocker and a receiver. And
- 54:02a lot of times I think, you know, the receiving running back things,
- 54:06that's overstated. But this isn't a guy you're just throwing checkdowns too.
- 54:12He was second and averaged depth to target among running backs last year at two
- 54:15point one yards. They're running him on wheel routes, they're stretching the field
- 54:19with him. This isn't screen passes and checkdowns. Yeah. I was just
- 54:22gonna say, Man, he runs a nasty wheel round, I'll tell you
- 54:24that. And not only that, he was third among running backs in slot
- 54:29target percentage and the guys ahead of him in those categories are Christian McCaffrey and
- 54:36I think it was James White, Okay. And so that's what you're talking
- 54:39about the caliber of pass addition to the passing game. And then you look
- 54:43at pass blocking, which was abysmal last year for the Eagles from the running
- 54:46backs. Among fifty running backs with forty or more pass blocking snaps last season,
- 54:52Saquon ranked third in the NFL in PFF grade. He allowed only two
- 54:55sacks and six pressures on one hundred pass blocking snaps. Wow. For reference,
- 55:00Wow, DeAndre Swift drank thirty third, Kenny Gainwell ranked thirty fourth.
- 55:06They combined to allow two sacks and sixteen pressures on about one hundred and thirty
- 55:10past wounce snap. So you're getting a big upgrade. However you want to
- 55:14utilize him in the passing game, you're getting an upgrade as a runner.
- 55:17And I think it's just a really solid deal. Absolutely Again, Folks talking
- 55:22to Shane Half. Follow him on Twitter slash x at Shane Half NFL.
- 55:27He's a great, great follow always posting great, great content with regard to
- 55:31the Philadelphia Eagles football in general too. So let's get into the upcoming NFL
- 55:37Draft. Cannot wait for it. Lennon and I were just talking about it,
- 55:39and just you know, we're going to be getting together as we do
- 55:43every year, to sit back and look at what the Eagles are going to
- 55:46do other teams as well. Eagles are currently slated to pick in the first
- 55:51round at number twenty two overall, as we all know, and I believe
- 55:53Howie Roseman is going to move up to get a Trenches base player. That's
- 55:59what my gut is telling me at this point. Shane, I know you
- 56:01like some offensive linemen. You've been posting about them as of late Graham Barton.
- 56:07And also I don't know how to say his first name, Talise.
- 56:12Is it Talise Fuaga? TALISEI Talise? Okay, I swear every time I
- 56:16hear his name it's pronounced differently, but I'm pretty sure it's Talise Fuaga.
- 56:21Yeah, I know you like these two gentlemen in terms of offensive linemen in
- 56:23the first round. Part of me wants Howie to draft a cornerback for the
- 56:29future. And again, as Lennon and I were just talking about, you
- 56:32know, as Darius Slay and James Bradbury, age, So what is your
- 56:37hope for the Birds and what they are going to potentially do in the first
- 56:42round and why what is your hope? Yeah, I would love to see
- 56:45a cornerback. And when I say that, and when I mott draft a
- 56:50cornerback, people some people will push back on that and they say, you
- 56:53know you've got Slay, You've got Isaiah Rogers, you have Keeley ring Go.
- 57:00But the thing is, we all saw the difference in Bradbury from twenty
- 57:06twenty two to twenty twenty three. Darius Slay is older. Like regression is
- 57:10not a gentle slope for cornerbacks. It is a here one year, unplayable
- 57:15the next situation. I'm not saying that's gonna happen to Slay this year,
- 57:19but what I am saying is you better have a secession plan. And then
- 57:22Isaiah Rodgers hasn't played in over a year and he's on a one year deal.
- 57:27Keilely Ringo, I really like I had a first round great on him
- 57:30last year, but he fell to the fourth round for a reason. Teams
- 57:32didn't view him that way. And so I think cornerback is absolutely a position
- 57:37the Eagles should invest in. My dream would be for the Eagles to end
- 57:40up with Quinjon Mitchell out of Toledo, Oh Terry on Arnold. I think
- 57:45both of those would require trade ups. I'm not sure the Eagles will do
- 57:50that. Same goes for Laatu Latu, the edge rusher out of UCLA.
- 57:53I would love that pick. I think my more realistic targets I would like
- 57:58to see are Cooper did the cornerback out of Iowa. And I know he's
- 58:02kind of a polarizing guy. Some people think he's only a safety. Some
- 58:07people think he can't really play man coverage very well, and you know there's
- 58:12some short area burst issues that leads to some separation of man coverage at times.
- 58:17But I just think he's such a high IQ player. I think he's
- 58:22a really good tackler. He triggers down hill against the run. He brings
- 58:25value as a punt returner. He's got great ball skills at the catch point
- 58:30seven interceptions in the last two years, and three of them he returned for
- 58:34touchdowns. He's super athletic. In twenty twenty two, he was the only
- 58:37cornerback per PFF with an eighty five plus coverage grade and run defense grade.
- 58:45He started his career at safety. He moved his cornerback. I would draft
- 58:49him to play cornerback, and if it doesn't work out, I think he
- 58:52could be a good safety. And one of the things I really like about
- 58:57that fit is you have Chauncey Gardner Johnson in hand, a guy that drops
- 59:01into the slot. He can also play safety. You're limited in what you
- 59:07can do creatively with a guy like that unless you have two of them.
- 59:10Because if Chauncey Gardner Johnson's on the field with Reid Blink and Ship and Sydney
- 59:15Brown's on the bench, spoiler alert, Chauncey Gardner Johnson's playing safety because there's
- 59:20only one other safety on the field. If you have both of these guys
- 59:24on the field, now, Vic Fangio can do all kinds of things.
- 59:28You can rotate after the snap. You can drop a safety into the box
- 59:31and rotate your slot back to safety. There's all kinds of things that you
- 59:35could do. That's really intriguing to me. And then the other guy is
- 59:39Brock Bowers. And I've been saying that Brock Bauers could slide into the late
- 59:45teens for a long time, and people are catching up to that thought now.
- 59:49It's hard to find a landing place for brock Bauers. If he gets
- 59:52past the Jets at ten, who I would argue should take an offensive lineman
- 59:58and we'll see how the top ten shut. But if he gets past the
- 1:00:01Jets at ten, the Colts at fifteen, or a spot that he could
- 1:00:06land the Bengals at nineteen, you're getting into area the Eagles could trade up
- 1:00:10for there. Now, why would you trade up for a tight end?
- 1:00:15Dallas Goddard is the same age now that zach Ertz was when you replaced him.
- 1:00:19He has struggled to stay healthy. I like twelve personnel. The Eagles
- 1:00:22like twelve personnel. Kellen Moore likes twelve personnel, and he's just a weapon
- 1:00:27that you can use. You can move him around. He's lined up in
- 1:00:30the slot on fifty two percent of his snaps, but he's lined up in
- 1:00:32line thirty seven percent, so he can block. And part of the thing
- 1:00:37about twelve personnel is if your second tight end can't block, it's really hard
- 1:00:43to do it. If your second tight end can't catch passes, it's also
- 1:00:47hard to do it. And the Eagles don't have a second tight end that
- 1:00:50can do both. And so I would be highly intrigued by brock Bowers if
- 1:00:54he gets past the Colts at fifteen, I would probably be making calls to
- 1:00:58try to get up in front of the Bengals. I think we saw back
- 1:01:01when zach Ertz was on this team along with Dallas godd Or running twelve personnel,
- 1:01:06how explosive that the offense was with that option, when you could have
- 1:01:10guys who have the capability of blocking, capability of pass catching as well.
- 1:01:15Tight ends of what you're talking about, Sheene, I think the explosiveness and
- 1:01:19the options that are given to an offense when you are able to run twelve
- 1:01:23personnel with that type of talent on the field, I think there's no arguing
- 1:01:30that that would be a really good move to make. So I love to
- 1:01:32hear your thoughts on that. But you know, as we move along here
- 1:01:37and we look at you know, we're talking about the first round. Here,
- 1:01:39there's two second round picks, and I am extremely happy that they have
- 1:01:44two second round picks here in this upcoming draft night, and I do wonder
- 1:01:47if they decide to make a move at all, if they make a move
- 1:01:51at offensive or defensive lineman in the first round, a lot of folks saying,
- 1:01:54you know, they're going to probably go in the trenches here, but
- 1:01:58if the second round is going to be really focused on getting that next generation
- 1:02:01of talent in the secondary, possibly safety or cornerback. I know we're talking
- 1:02:06how we want that to happen in the first round, but what are your
- 1:02:09specific thoughts as you're looking at the second round picks for this Eagles team and
- 1:02:14where they may be gauging in terms of these in terms of the talent they're
- 1:02:17going to be drafting. Yeah, first of all, I would like to
- 1:02:22thank the Saints for trading the Eagles Jalen Carter and a mid second round pick
- 1:02:27for an offensive tackle that they're already looking to replace in this year's draft.
- 1:02:30I think that's pick fifty, right, I think it's pick fifty. Yeah,
- 1:02:35yeah, the Saints they're probably going to draft the replacement to Trevor Pinning,
- 1:02:38Yeah, the guy they traded up to take two years ago in the
- 1:02:42first round. So shout out to the Saints for that. I would love
- 1:02:45to see a wide receiver in Day two now if you take Brought Bauers in
- 1:02:49the first maybe not, but you know, some but as long as you
- 1:02:53didn't take brock Bowers. I'd love to see a wide receiver in Day two.
- 1:02:55It wouldn't have to be at fifty or fifty three. This is a
- 1:02:59tremendous deep wide receiver class. Yep. But the Eagles don't have a third
- 1:03:02round pick, and so I would like to see them move back in either
- 1:03:07the first round to pick up a third or from one of those second round
- 1:03:10picks to pick up a third, just to spread that out a little bit.
- 1:03:14But with what wide receiver contracts did this offseason and the depth of this
- 1:03:19draft class at wide receiver, I think every team should be looking to bolster
- 1:03:22that room at some point. Yeah. Now, ultimately I would like to
- 1:03:27walk out of the first three picks with a defensive back, a linebacker,
- 1:03:30and a wide receiver. Now, the Eagles obviously aren't taking a linebacker in
- 1:03:36the first round. There's not one that should go in the first round.
- 1:03:39I would be really surprised if they took a wide receiver in the first round.
- 1:03:44So, you know, ultimately I probably think they end up. You
- 1:03:46know, my realistic scenarios, I'd like to see him take a defensive back
- 1:03:50in the first and then get out of Day two with a linebacker and a
- 1:03:52receiver. I think that that's a great plan of action for this team for
- 1:03:58sure. And as we're closing out our discussion here, Shane, you know,
- 1:04:00we've been talking about, you know, potential picks and the talent that
- 1:04:04we like here and at the end of the day when the draft is all
- 1:04:09said and done, you know, we talked about the theme of the Eagles
- 1:04:12offseason to start our discussion. What are you hoping the theme of this draft
- 1:04:16is going to end up being for this Philadelphia Eagles organization as they're moving forward?
- 1:04:21What's the what do you hope the theme of the draft is going to
- 1:04:24be drafting impact players as rookies? All right? I mean you have got
- 1:04:30to draft players and put them on the football field. It's exactly what Len
- 1:04:34was just saying, you know, and I and I actually said to it.
- 1:04:39Sorry to cut you off, but I said to Len, I said,
- 1:04:43you know what, drafting for the future, blah blah blah. He's
- 1:04:45like Jeft, He's like, no, we need talent on the field now.
- 1:04:48And I think I am so used to as a Philadelphia Eagles fan having
- 1:04:53this front office and various coaching staffs making these first round picks and second round
- 1:04:59picks way in the trenches that are wait on the sidelines for quote their turn
- 1:05:02or to develop. We got to get these guys on the field, like
- 1:05:05Lenn was saying, like you're saying here, So I'm sorry to interrupt you,
- 1:05:09but I just wanted to mention that that's what my co host said as
- 1:05:12well. Yeah, I mean in twenty twenty two, the Eagles only had
- 1:05:17eight hundred and seventy seven snaps played by rookies, which ranked dead last in
- 1:05:21the NFL. Wow. See yeah, and it was thirty two percent less
- 1:05:26than the median number. Wow. So like they were, they were they
- 1:05:30were way down there. Yeah, Okay, now they were better in twenty
- 1:05:33twenty three, but they still only had rookies play fifteen one thy five hundred
- 1:05:39and eight snaps and they had two first round picks, And if you remove
- 1:05:44Jalen Carter, which is about six hundred of those, you're down below one
- 1:05:47thousand snaps by rookies again, and so you cannot do that. They had
- 1:05:51a first round pick and Nolan Smith play two hundred and three snaps. That
- 1:05:56that's absurd. That is an egregious use of draft capital to go draft a
- 1:06:00guy in the first round who plays under twelve snaps a game. They have
- 1:06:04Keeley Ringo, a guy again I had a first round great on apparently nobody
- 1:06:11else did, but they traded up to go get him in the fourth round.
- 1:06:15Yeah, and then he sat on the bench behind James Bradberry who couldn't
- 1:06:18cover his own shadow for most of the right And then you get to the
- 1:06:23end of the year and he's forced onto the field when Darius Slay is hurt
- 1:06:26and all of a sudden, hey, look this guy can make some plays.
- 1:06:30Too bad we didn't have him on the field earlier. You have got
- 1:06:31to draft players that play. Good teams draft players that get on the football
- 1:06:38field. And I'm not saying your third round pick Tyler Steen has to play
- 1:06:42a lot at you know, really bad teams would do would do that.
- 1:06:46But you look at a team like the Chiefs, which, yeah, the
- 1:06:49Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes. That's why they won two Super bowl exactly. They
- 1:06:54also had a really good defense last year. And that really good defense came
- 1:06:59from guys like Trent McDuffie who were drafted in the first round put on the
- 1:07:02football field, and they figured it out by the end of the rookie season.
- 1:07:06You have got to get impact out of your rookies. And so if
- 1:07:10the Eagles should not spin one of those first three picks, those three picks
- 1:07:15in the top fifty three, all three of those guys should play significant snaps
- 1:07:18early as rookies, or in my opinion, the Eagles misused their draft capital.
- 1:07:24I love the way we end that conversation right there at Shane Half NFL
- 1:07:28on Twitter slash x. Also check out the on the Shane Page podcast.
- 1:07:34New podcast it's going to be coming out. I think you've already dropped some
- 1:07:39episodes, correct, Yeah, So this is the podcast that Johnny A.
- 1:07:43Page and I did for BG and radio before eSPI Nation ended all those podcasts.
- 1:07:47So we're launching out on our own now. So it is a new
- 1:07:50podcast feed. You can go search it out on the Shane Page. It's
- 1:07:54on YouTube, or it's on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, all those places.
- 1:07:58Nice. It'll also live stream on like Twitter and YouTube and things. But
- 1:08:02we do a lot of in depth film review stuff in the season. We're
- 1:08:05actually recording our first episode for the new feed in a couple of hours.
- 1:08:10We're going to talk day one and two offensive Draft prospects, and so that
- 1:08:15podcast will be up by the time you listen to this one right now,
- 1:08:18though there's just a placeholder test audio in there because I had to have one
- 1:08:21to submit the feed that you have to do. Yep, that's what you
- 1:08:25have to do again, folks, Shane have Shane, buddy. It was
- 1:08:28great talking to you. I always love having you on fantastic content as always.
- 1:08:31Come back and join us down the road. I'd love to have you
- 1:08:33back on the show, my friend. Absolutely, I'll be back anytime you'll
- 1:08:36have me. Jeff Shane is such a great guy, and as his football
- 1:08:42analysis there during our discussion shows you, he certainly knows what he's talking about
- 1:08:46with regard to draft prospects. Where this Eagles organization and team is going.
- 1:08:51I can't wait for this NFL Draft. It's gonna be really interesting. And
- 1:08:55quite frankly, we were after we hit the stop record, we were talking
- 1:09:01a little bit about just you know, how Eagles Nation is going to react
- 1:09:04to this first round pick and what Howie Roseman is going to do, and
- 1:09:10I said, you know, I think there's just gonna be an entire eruption
- 1:09:13in the city of Philadelphia that could be heard from the clouds if they pick
- 1:09:17a cornerback in the first round. But I think it's really important too what
- 1:09:21Lenn was saying earlier and what Shane was saying earlier as well. A first
- 1:09:26round pick, you gotta play him, you gotta play him on the field.
- 1:09:29And I think so many of us, like I initially said, have
- 1:09:30been conditioned that you're seeing first round picks for the most part, even the
- 1:09:35second round picks at times sitting on the bench. Quote learning. They need
- 1:09:40to learn on the field. They need to get on the field. They
- 1:09:42need to have that NFL experience right out of the gate. It's not going
- 1:09:46to be one hundred percent perfect. These guys are going to learn, and
- 1:09:49they're gonna need to learn. Go back in the feed, listen to the
- 1:09:53podcast with Matt Waldman and myself as he was analyzing and telling us, you
- 1:09:58know how, this is an art for for a lot of these guys,
- 1:10:00and sometimes you have to adapt once you get to the NFL, and most
- 1:10:03times the talent needs to adapt. So it's gonna be a great talking about
- 1:10:08the NFL Draft after here on this podcast platform. And very much appreciate you
- 1:10:14longtime listeners. If you're new to the show, We hope you stick around
