- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: Believe you me.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: So join the dogs.com is where you can do all of those things.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_02]: OK, so let's talk about the linebackers today to kick off the conversation.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to, first of all, let's look at what the linebacker unit was in twenty twenty four on the official, or the, I'm sorry, the initial fifty three man roster heading into the season.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: It was Jeremiah Ohusu, Koremola, J.O.K.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_02]: Jordan Hicks, Devon Bush, Tony Fields, Muhammad Diabody, and Boogie Watson.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_02]: So those were the linebackers on the initial fifty three man roster a year ago to kick off the conversation heading into training camp twenty twenty five let's start with Jordan Hicks six foot one two hundred thirty five pounds he is thirty two years old this will be his eleven NFL season
- 3:53[SPEAKER_02]: This is the second year of his two year deal with the Brown.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: He's a four point one million capit this year.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: They signed him in the offseason last year in twenty twenty four to come in here and kind of fill the role left by Anthony Walker who had been here for a few years just could not stay healthy could not stay on the field.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_02]: And so they brought in Jordan Hicks who also did not stay healthy last year.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: This is just
- 4:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, injuries is a theme with the Browns.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Every year, it doesn't matter who the players are.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: We can bring in a guy who hasn't missed a game in the last five years and he's probably going to miss at least four if not maybe half the season for the Browns in his first year here.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_02]: Just for whatever reason, whether it's the athletic training department, the conditioning guys, the strength and conditioning, all that stuff, these guys get hurt.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: more often it seems for the Browns like if we we always go through our our injury reports every week during the season
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: And the Browns injury report is always longer.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes twice as long as our opponent is, it's freaking incredible.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: But anyway, back to Jordan Hicks, he played twelve games in twenty twenty four.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: So he missed five is his first season.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, he missed five games, first season under one hundred tackles after locking five straight seasons with a hundred plus.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_02]: He missed games with
- 5:14[SPEAKER_02]: elbow injuries, tricep injuries, missed the finale against the ravens with a concussion.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_02]: So just a typical gear for a guy on the Cleveland Browns.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_02]: But even with missing five games, he still managed to log seventy eight tackles for tackles for loss and two sacks.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: So if we can get a relatively healthy season from Jordan Hicks, and again, like I said, I know health and any one on the Browns, it doesn't seem to correlate very well, but Jordan Hicks is a very solid linebacker, and he's a great player to lead this unit in twenty twenty five.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: The next guy on the list is Devon Bush, five eleven two thirty five twenty six years old, this will be a seventh NFL season, the Browns signed him back this year in twenty five on a one year deal, one point one seven vet minimum contract, so he's on.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_02]: Like I said, on the vet minimum, I thought Devin Bush played pretty solid for the Browns last season despite, you know, utter vomit inducing state of the team that was the Browns in twenty twenty four.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: Bush came in here after, you know, he was a first round pick for the Steelers and it was rookie season was phenomenal and then had some injury situation going on and just never really bounced back.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: from that until last year came back and had, like I said about pretty solid season played sixteen games, seventy six tackles, eight tackles for lost one sack and he defended three passes.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_02]: But given all that, given what he did last year and everything, Browns brought him back in the offices, I don't think that makes him a lock.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_02]: to make the team buy any stretch just because this linebacker position, I'm going to continue to go through the names here.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think the linebacker position is actually pretty deep heading into training camps.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, Devon Bush, again, the next veteran up.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, as a guy who was here last year as well, but again, not a lock in my opinion to make the team, I think the training camp battle and at the line-backer position specifically is going to be very interesting this year.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_02]: Because like I Jordan Hicks, obviously a great veteran leader to be at the top of that unit, Devin Bush, and then these next couple of names here.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_02]: We've got some very good linebackers and I'm going to roll right in now to Muhammad Diabody.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: Six foot four, two hundred and twenty five pounds, twenty four years old.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_02]: This is his third NFL season after going undrafted back in twenty twenty three Brown signed him as a UDFA and he has been nothing short of excellent as an undrafted player making this roster now two years and a row heading into his third.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: Diabody played thirteen games last season made seventy tackles five tackles for loss and defended three passes.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_02]: I do expect the a body to make the fifty three man roster for the third season third straight season in twenty twenty five just because he's a dog.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_02]: The dude is an absolute dog on the field and I'm based on what I believe is Cameron justice was reporting over OTAs and many camp here in the spring.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: Diabody once again, making plays everywhere on the field.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, and these UDFA guys, I mean, this, this is not, I'm not saying this is all promoting these guys.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: They've got a bigger chip on their shoulder a lot of times than the drafted players.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_02]: They've got, because they've had to work for it.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_02]: They went under after they had to, you know, come in as a UDFA and then fight for a spot.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_02]: And there's,
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: Thirty-three percent of the NFL on average every year is made up of undrafted players.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's one out of every three players didn't get drafted.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: These guys come in, hungry, and they fight, and we've seen exactly that from Muhammad Diabody, and we've also seen it now last year from this next guy, Winston Reed.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, again, sticking with the undrafted veteran guys for the Browns.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: Reed was a UDFA out of Weber State last season.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_02]: Six foot, two hundred and twenty five pounds.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: He is twenty five years old.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_02]: So, he was a little older coming out of college now heading into his second NFL season.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: Played in sixteen games last season had twenty three tackles.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_02]: One TFL, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: After J.O.K.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_02]: went down last season and Jordan Hicks dealt with his injuries.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: The Browns got some very solid performances from the last few guys that I mentioned, Devin Bush, Mahamedia Body, and Winston Reed as a rookie was very impressive for the Browns I felt last year.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_02]: So the Browns did bring in another good veteran option this off season.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: They signed Jerome Baker.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: six foot two two hundred thirty two pounds he is just twenty eight years old and yet this is going to be his eighth NFL season out of Ohio State.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: So of course, I got a soft spot in my heart for these buck guys, but Jerome Baker's been a guy who's been very good in the NFL over his career last year.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: He played in five games with the Seattle Seahawks and then got traded played five games with the Tennessee Titans.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_02]: in total.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: Jerome Baker had sixty one total tackles, two tackles for lost two sacks, four pass breakups, a force fumble and a fumble recovery.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: The Brown signed him this year to a one year one point two five million dollar contract, so not quite the vet minimum higher than what they gave Devon Bush.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_02]: This is a guy that I wanted the Browns to sign the last off season.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think me and Kenny Mac actually did an episode, highlighting players we wanted the Browns to sign.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_02]: And for you, just to hand Jerome Baker was one of the guys that I highlighted last off season.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_02]: Ultimately, he ended up signing with Seattle last year for seven million dollars over one year.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: And like I said, played five games with the Seahawks before getting traded to Tennessee.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_02]: So one point two five nine dollars for Jerome Baker this year could end up being a huge deal for the Browns.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's a guy who's had three seasons now over one hundred tackles.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_02]: And then he had a four season in there with ninety two.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: So almost four seasons at a hundred tackles.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: His season high in sex is seven.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_02]: He has twenty four and a half sex over his career.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: He's not a huge TFL guy, but he does break up passes at a high rate and he forces fumbles.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_02]: I loved this signing when it happened, not just because he's a buck eye, but because he's been a great linebacker in the NFL over his career.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think Baker has a chance to contribute more to the defense in twenty twenty five than maybe a lot of people are thinking.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: There've been some bear splash is obviously the drafting of Carson Swesinger who I'll get to here in a little bit.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the bringing back of Devon Bush, you know, he as he did have his arrest or whatever that situation was over in Pittsburgh this off season.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I'll mention that, but I'm not going to dive into it anymore.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: We've already covered it on the show.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously the UDFA guys get a lot of buzz and camp and stuff.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: But Jerome Baker is a veteran who I think is going to make his presence felt in training camp.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm excited to see him play for the Browns this season.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: Next guy up, we've got Boogie Watson, Nathaniel Boogie Watson.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: He was last year, six round pick out of Mississippi State, six foot, two hundred and thirty three pounds, twenty four years old.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: Did not quite have the impact in twenty twenty four that we were hoping for after he led the SEC and tackles.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_02]: He was the SEC defensive player the year in twenty twenty three.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: Just had more hope and expectation for him as a rookie last year, but he did play in fourteen games.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: Just fourteen total tackles.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_02]: Ten of them were solo.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_02]: He did break up a pass.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_02]: Majority of the snaps were on special team.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: So he didn't play a whole lot of defense defensive snaps when we dealt with injuries ended up going to UDFA Winston Reed over the six round pick.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_02]: Boogie Watson Watson played two hundred forty three snaps on special teams.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: Just fifty five snaps on defense.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_02]: So
- 12:42[SPEAKER_02]: As much as we like Boogie Watson, I like Boogie Watson.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: He even came on the podcast last summer.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: I had a conversation with him in great dude.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think he's probably more likely a candidate to be on the practice squad unless the Browns covet him on their special teams units, which they very well may.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_02]: He will he excelled on special teams last year.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_02]: That could be a spot where he makes the fifty three man specifically to contribute on all their ST units.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: We will see how things go this summer.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: He'll be a guy to watch in preseason for sure.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_02]: So that's Boogie Watson's second year man out of Mississippi State.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: This episode is sponsored by Manly Bands.

- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: And that will roll us into the final name on the list, probably the name you guys are most excited to hear about.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_02]: And that's Carson Shwessinger the six foot two, two, one and forty two rookie out of UCLA.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_02]: Twenty two years old the Browns used the very first pick if you remember on day two of the NFL draft to go get.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_02]: Unfortunately, they're J.O.K.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_02]: replacement.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_02]: The rookie at a UCLA had the number one production score among all linebackers in this draft class.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: His college career, just a refresher for everybody.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: Twenty-twenty-one.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: He was a red shirt walk on at UCLA.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: Twenty-twenty-two.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: He played in all thirteen games as a reserve and on special teams.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: He had fifteen tackles and half a tackle for loss.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: He received a scholarship before that season.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: Twenty twenty three came back played in all thirteen games again as a reserve and on special teams just twelve tackles and two TFLs with one sack.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_02]: So very minimal production after walking on his freshman year, then last year in twenty twenty four ex-suppolo did.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_02]: First team associated all press.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: First team associated press all American.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: First team all big ten conference.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_02]: Finalist for the butt kiss award, which is the nation's top linebacker, led the FBS with ninety solo tackles ranked third in the nation with a hundred and thirty six total tackles.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: He was a team captain at UCLA played in all twelve games.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: eight tackles for laws, four sacks, two interceptions, three pass break ups, a four swumble, and like I said, one hundred and thirty six tackles, nine of them, solo tackles.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, so you only has the one season as a starter in college, but like I said, it was an incredible season.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_02]: I don't expect him to come out and be
- 16:42[SPEAKER_02]: necessarily the guy for the Browns early in the season, but man, I do expect to see him make some big strides and really start to make plays for the team over the second half of the season as he continues to adapt to the NFL game and the NFL game speed and as things start to slow down for him, but they're
- 17:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, some of the reports I think was Terry Pluto had some news and notes and updates and things from OTs and many camp that he came away with and one of the things was that Carson Swesinger could be the guy, even though I just said, I don't expect him to be the guy right away.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: He's saying maybe even early in the season, this guy can start the Browns think he can play.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's picking up the defensive schemes very quickly.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_02]: He just, the dude has a high motor and a high recognition of play.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm very excited for Carson Swesinger on the defensive side of the ball.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: Other names I mentioned here at the linebacker position.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: We've got Easton mask aren't old.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: No clue guys, I admit, I do not know who that guy is.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, J.O.K.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_02]: who has been placed on the reserve publicist and will miss all of twenty twenty five with the neck injury that he sustained against the ravens in that head on collision with Derek Henry and week eight last season.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_02]: So unfortunately, yes, J.O.K.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_02]: should be highlighting our linebacker conversation here for the Browns, but unfortunately, he just gets an honorable mention at the end because he's not going to play this year.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_02]: doesn't feel like he's probably ever going to play football again.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: That if I had to make a bet right now, yes or no, does J. Okay, ever play football again in the NFL, I would bet no.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: And that's not me.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I don't say that with any bit of joy.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_02]: I just think that's the honest reality of the situation if he does come back.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_02]: Holy crap.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_02]: Him with Carson's Westerner could be like the best line backing unit.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_02]: in the NFL.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_02]: So praying for J.O.K.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_02]: safety first and foremost, just as a human being, just for life.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_02]: Because I think he's like twenty six.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the dude is young.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_02]: He's got the rest of his life to live.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_02]: Want him to be healthy.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: Want him to stay safe.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, selfishly as a brown fan, I want to see him back on the field, but just I wouldn't bet on it.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so let's move back in the defensive backfield and we're going to start with the safety unit, probably the weakest unit on the defense right now.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if anybody would really argue with me on that though the Browns have added some decent veterans to fill out the death chart here in the offseason.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_02]: So last year on the initial fifty three man roster, the Browns went into the season with Grant Delpit, jog one thorn hill, Rodney McCloud, Anthony Bell,
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: Man, I hate to see how I go.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_02]: And Ronnie Hickman.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_02]: So let's kick it off here.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: The discussion with the top dog at the safety position grant Delpit six, but three, two hundred and eight pounds, twenty six years old heading into year six with the Browns this season.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_02]: He signed a three year, thirty six million dollar extension with the Browns toward the end of the twenty twenty three season.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_02]: His cap hit here in twenty twenty five is just five point nine million dollars.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_02]: Interesting note here.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_02]: If I'm reading all these numbers correctly from over the cap, this is the final season.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_02]: For guaranteed money for grand delpit, so theoretically, not saying that I want this to happen or that I think it will happen.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just saying hypothetically, theoretically, the Browns could trade him next off season and save four million dollars against the cap in twenty six and nearly thirteen million in twenty twenty seven.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_02]: Just an interesting note to make there about delpit and the way his contract is structured.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_02]: Grinned up at played sixteen games last year in twenty twenty four he had a hundred and eleven tackles seven tackles for loss one sack one fumble recovery and a pass break up ever since this due towards the killies ahead of his rookie season he has come back and been a freaking beast at safety for the Browns he's missed six games over the last four seasons that's it after missing that entire rookie season he's had sixty six
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: tackles one hundred and five eighty and now one hundred and eleven over those four seasons he said had six interceptions four of them came in twenty twenty two so that means zero picks last year and that isn't area that not just delpit but this entire secondary really needs to improve upon is coming down with interceptions so another season for delpit coming up and excited to watch him continue to make tackles and be a tackling machine for the Browns at that position
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: Next up, Ronnie Hickman, six foot one, two hundred and ten pounds, twenty three years old, similar to Muhammad Diabody.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: He's heading into his third season after being a UDFA in twenty twenty three, so a great UDFA class for Andrew Barry in twenty twenty three.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: Ronnie Hickman played in fourteen games last season, had forty-five tackles, one tackle for lost bump, one fumble recovery and a pass break up.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: Just one interception so far over his two-year career and that was that huge pick six if you guys remember against the jets on the Thursday night football game that locked down the Browns playoff spot in twenty twenty three.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_02]: Hickman is a very solid player, okay.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: He's
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: He's a huge hit, like I mentioned on UDFA signing, but relying on him as the main starting free safety, I'm not saying that it can't happen or that he can't continue to ascend and become that type of player.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_02]: He has done very well in his
- 22:04[SPEAKER_02]: You know, spot start opportunities.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: But we've primarily seen him now fill in a reserve role for the Browns, filling a rotation with other guys for, you know, depth and coming up whenever there's been injuries and he's done very well in that role.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_02]: But the Brown seemed to be really banking on him taking that next step for the team and for the defense here in twenty twenty five.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_02]: So with Delpit and Hickman, really being the only two safeties on the roster for a large amount of the off season here.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_02]: The Browns finally did go make some free agent signings at the safety position.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_02]: They brought in Ration Jenkins, six put one, two hundred and twenty pounds, thirty one years old.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's his ninth NFL season, signed him to a one year, a one point two five million dollar contract.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_02]: These two guy fridge and scientists are very similar.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_02]: One is thirty one.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_02]: The other is thirty two.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_02]: Both it's their ninth season.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_02]: Both there are one year twenty one point two five million dollar deal.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_02]: Jenkins is more of your in the box.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_02]: Strong safety.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_02]: And I would see him being as more of the direct back up to Grant Delpit last year with the Seahawks.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_02]: Jenkins played thirteen games with fifty three tackles, two tackles for loss one sack.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_02]: It was his actually his first career sack.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_02]: And then he had a fumble recovery for a touchdown, a one hundred and two yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_02]: The two seasons before that from twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three with the jag wires.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_02]: Jenkins had one hundred plus tackles.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_02]: And in each of those seasons, and he had ten total TFLs over that span.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_02]: He also forced three fumbles in twenty twenty two.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_02]: So he's a very good tackler as well.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_02]: I definitely like this signing, like I said, as depth behind Delta.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is a very good fit for Jim Schwartz's defense.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_02]: And I think
- 23:52[SPEAKER_02]: Browns fans could be pleasantly pleased with Ray Sean Jenkins here in twenty twenty five the other free agent.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: We signed was Demante Cazee five eleven one seventy four thirty two years old like I said ninth NFL season just like Jenkins signed to a one year one point two five million deal.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: This is more of your center field free safety type of guy.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_02]: Your backup rotational guy with Ronnie Hickman, last year with the Steelers, the Montaicazzi played in fifteen games with thirty one tackles, two pass break ups, one pick.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's a guy though, who single season high in interceptions is seven, okay?
- 24:29[SPEAKER_02]: That's great.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_02]: So he has a single season high of seven picks back in twenty eighteen when he played for the Atlanta Falcons.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_02]: So
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: Probably again, the weakest unit on the defense, they sat with Delpit and Hickman for a long time, finally signed Ration Jenkins and Demante Casi.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_02]: I think those are two great signings for the Browns for Depth.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_02]: The other guy that I'll talk about here, and it's not much to talk about is Nick Needham, kind of listed just as a defensive back on the Browns website.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_02]: He can play some safety, can play some corner, that type of player, six foot, one, ninety-three, is twenty-eight years old.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_02]: seventh NFL season he's on the vet minimum for one year here with the Browns.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_02]: He has spent all six seasons of his career so far with Miami.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_02]: with the Dolphin D add two picks in each of his first three seasons has not played a ton the last three seasons just two games in twenty twenty four one tackle that's about it been on and off the practice squad that type of stuff so he likely won't be on the active roster I can't imagine could be a practice squad candidate for the Browns this year other names to mention here you got Christopher Edmunds was the UDFA for for the Browns that they signed last season
- 25:37[SPEAKER_02]: And then you've got Donovan McMillan, the UDFA, they signed this season.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: Donovan McMillan is somebody.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be very interested to watch and pay attention to over training camp and during the preseason.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: So if there's one guy that you guys remember from this episode as training camp or preseason kickoff, just remember Donovan McMillan will be an interesting player to watch for the Browns.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_02]: This episode is sponsored by Butcher Box for Pets.

- 27:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's time for us dogs to give our dogs the nutrition they deserve.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_02]: So let's put the final touches on this positional breakdown conversation with the corner backs.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_02]: Last season on the initial VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-VL-
- 28:10[SPEAKER_02]: Back in, twenty-two Denzel Wardstein Day five year, one hundred point five million dollar contract extension with the Browns, with an average annual salary of twenty point one million dollars, he will be a twenty four point five million dollar cap hit this season.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: based on OTC.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, we are in the part of his contract now where the Browns can start saving cap space by trading Denzel Ward.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_02]: So those just for the people who think that we need to blow up the whole thing and and start trading everybody for future picks and things like that.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_02]: I I wanted to mention it that yes, we the dead cap situation for Denzel Ward and all that we're at the point in the contract where
- 28:50[SPEAKER_02]: Browns could consider trading him and it would not be financially prohibitive to do so, but that being said.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_02]: Then's a word as a guy who, if this season crashes horribly off the rails, could potentially start be floated in trade rumors and things like that, but we
- 29:06[SPEAKER_02]: love Denzo Ward.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_02]: We don't want to see him go anywhere else.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_02]: Wanted to be a brown for life.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_02]: He's that type of dude.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: Last year he played in sixteen and seventeen games.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_02]: So for everybody who says he's always injured and you know, doesn't play full seasons.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_02]: Guess he doesn't play full seasons.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_02]: But then again, what NFL player really does, especially a full-time player.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_02]: But last year, sixteen out of seventeen games, he had forty nine tackles, one TFL, one Fumble recovery, one Forceumble, and
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: teen past breakups.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_02]: He led the entire NFL last season with nineteen past breakups.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: That's awesome.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: The flip side for Denzo were just two picks.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_02]: So he's a guy who always seems to get his hands on the past, but just cannot seem to come down with the ball.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_02]: This is really nothing new.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: If you go back and look through his stat lines, his career high in the season is just three picks.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_02]: So he's not a big interception guy, but he's had double digit pass breakups every single season of his career.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_02]: So he is when they talk about lockdown corner, it really is you throw the ball toward Denzo Ward.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's probably hitting turf.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's probably coming down on the ground.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_02]: You're not running a high risk of him picking you off.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_02]: but you're not running a very good opportunity to make a completed pass to your receiver either.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_02]: And so that moves us into Greg Newsom the second, six foot, one hundred and ninety two pounds, twenty five years old.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_02]: This will be his fifth season.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: He's playing on the fifth year option in twenty twenty five with a thirteen point four million dollar capet.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_02]: And this is why he's been the speculation of every single trade rumor you hear.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_02]: Every trade proposal that comes out from every media outlet and all that kind of stuff this entire off season.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_02]: He's got no dead money.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: That's why and he's on the final year of his contract.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's why he is in every trade speculation out there.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_02]: The Brown stand to save that entire thirteen point four million against the cap if they were to move him.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_02]: Plus like I mentioned, not under contract beyond the season.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: So the Browns do have a decision to make with Greg new some, you know, if this season is not going well, it doesn't look like we're going to make the playoffs and all that kind of thing.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: This could be a trade deadline type of guy too.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: The Browns could look to try to find a younger asset, you know, for future years with more time on their contract or just draft picks for Greg new some if the opportunity comes up.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: Or they might extend him.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_02]: I have no idea of what they plan to do with Greg Newsom, but they do have decisions to make with Newsom.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: And the next guy will talk about who is Martin Emerson.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: But sticking with Greg Newsom, thirteen games last season.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: He had twenty seven tackles, five pass break ups and one pick.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_02]: He's only had three career interceptions over four seasons.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: So between Ward and Newsom, you're not getting many interceptions on defense.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: Twenty seven tackles last year.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_02]: That was the lowest total of his career in a single season.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_02]: Now, Newson played a lot in the slot last year.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_02]: I've listened to a lot of people, a lot of football guys and analysts talk about how Greg Newson needs to get back out on the perimeter on the other side from Denzel Ward and get him out of the slot, get Martin Emerson back into the slot.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: Not sure why the Browns are using him so much in that position, but they seem to feel like he's being played out of position for what his skill set could be maximized for on the outside.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: So then Martin Emerson, Jr.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: The next guy, six foot, two, two hundred and one pounds.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_02]: Twenty four years old, this is the fourth and final year of his rookie deal.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_02]: So like I said, the Browns need to make a decision, likely during the season, if they want to extend him.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_02]: If he hits free agency after the season, another team could come strong after him, if he gets back to himself and the way that he played in twenty twenty three, or I'm sorry, twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three, twenty twenty four was his down year.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: Just a four million dollar cap hit this season.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it's practical to think that the Browns could or would extend both new some and Emerson likely they're going to pick one of these guys to extend at some point this season.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_02]: In twenty twenty four Emerson played all seventeen games he had eighty tackles which
- 33:11[SPEAKER_02]: If you go back and you look at what the other two had, the other guys, and maybe this is why they're playing Emerson more in the slot because of his tackling ability.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: Denzo Ward was forty-nine.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_02]: Greg knew some twenty-seven, then you've got Martin Emerson with freaking eighty tackles.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_02]: Three tackles for Lost One Force Fumble, One Fumble Recovery.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_02]: Again, while he had his best career season in the tackling department, it was his coverage.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_02]: that was the worst so far of his career, just five past breakups after he had fifteen as a rookie and then sixteen as a sophomore.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_02]: I want you guys to remember what I said about Denza award.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: He led the NFL last year with nineteen past breakups.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: Martin Freak and Emerson came in and had fifteen as a rookie and then followed up with sixteen.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_02]: So there's a pro bull corner back there in Martin Emerson, Jr.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_02]: He just needs to get back to it here in twenty twenty five.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: Looking back at twenty three he had four interceptions zero and twenty twenty four the interception thing was bad across the board for the Browns in twenty twenty four.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_02]: Cameron Mitchell, the next guy we'll talk about here, five, eleven, one, pounds, twenty-three years old, third NFL season.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_02]: He appeared in all seventeen games last year after dealing with some injuries during his rookie season.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_02]: He made twenty-four tackles, one TFL, and two past breakups, just a pretty good young rotational depth piece behind the top three guys here for the Browns.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_02]: And then after him, Miles Harden, five, eleven, one, ninety-five, twenty-three years old, second season was a rookie last year.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_02]: Just let's see, he appeared in four games,
- 34:48[SPEAKER_02]: and split pretty much fifty-fifty his time and his snaps between defense and special teams.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_02]: And then the last guy I'll dive into with any bit of depth is Tony Brown the second six foot, two hundred pounds, twenty nine years old, seventh NFL season.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_02]: He is on the vet minimum deal this year for the Browns.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_02]: He was here last year, appeared in six games, but strictly on special teams.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_02]: Only he logged exactly zero snaps on defense in twenty twenty four.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_02]: Other names at the corner back position to mention here, Lamarian James and Dom Jones are both UDFA's.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_02]: This season, rookie guys to watch this training camp in preseason.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_02]: You got Anthony Kendall and Chagosi, a newsy.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_02]: Um, who was, I believe, on the practice squad last year.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_02]: So that's it, that wraps up everything for the Browntating and the training camp.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_02]: The only things I really didn't dive into were the special teams, specialists, so you've got your Punter Cori Bajorquez, who was like the best punter in the NFL, led the Browns in yardage last year.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think at some point, I mean, he had more punt yards than the offense had total yards.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_02]: It was freaking embarrassing for the offense last year.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: And then you've got Dustin Hopkins,
- 36:04[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see what we get out of him this year.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_02]: Last year was like the worst kicker in the NFL after being one of the best the year before got the extension and all that kind of stuff.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see if he gets back to himself this year.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_02]: They have been cutting and re-signing and cutting and re-signing Andre Schmidt who is currently still back with the team after they made some moves last week.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_02]: So there is another kicker at least currently on the roster heading into training camp.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_02]: And then I believe Rex Soonahara is the current long snapper on the roster after they've parted ways with longtime Brown Charlie Hewlett this off season.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_02]: So that wraps it up.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: That's your roster right now looking into training camp.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_02]: Go back.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_02]: If you guys missed it, go back and check out the offensive episode.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously broke down quarterback training backs for Severs tight ends and the offensive line all on one long episode.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_02]: I probably should've split that one up into two.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_02]: Defense here, go back, watch the defensive line.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_02]: I went over the all the edge rusher, the defensive end guys, and then also the interior players as well.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously now I just finished up with linebackers and your defensive backfield for the Browns in twenty twenty five will safely make any moves here over the next few weeks.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_02]: heading into training camp.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_02]: Do they trade for another wide receiver?
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: Do they trade away one of their quarterbacks?
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see what happens.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_02]: Either way, training camp is going to be musty TV, pretty much for us musty social media.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_02]: This summer, it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, for a team that's not expected to be very good, I would say is the assessment from most analysts, media, Browns fans, don't think this team's going to be very great.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of excitement and a lot of hype and a lot of buzz.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously, it's driven primarily by the two young rookie quarterbacks.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll see what they end up doing for the Browns here in training camp in pre-season.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, on the defensive side of the ball, with Mason Graham up front and then Carson Swessinger at the line-backer position.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_02]: And then you just, like the veterans I talked about.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Jerome Baker coming in here.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited to see, you know, on the defensive line, Mulie Collins.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_02]: I did a thing on him how I think he could be the most underrated signing for the Browns this off season.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: And then also Joe Trion Choyenko on the edge after they just let Obo go.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_02]: And then you got the battle between Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire on the edge.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like there's a lot of very exciting, very buzzworthy things to be watching and paying attention to as the summer progresses here.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_02]: So we will keep you guys covered on all of that.
