Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: You are listening to five Minute Friday Unhurdled Emily Here. Hello,
- 0:23Speaker 1: this this week has been a week. Let me tell
- 0:26Speaker 1: you so. I mentioned last week that I am producing
- 0:29Speaker 1: the special series for Coach Bennett, Nike's global running head
- 0:35Speaker 1: coach on his podcast in celebration of their after Dark series.
- 0:38Speaker 1: They are chatting with a slew of women from all
- 0:42Speaker 1: around the world, and so that has been really fun
- 0:45Speaker 1: because I am truly connecting with women all around the world.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I am oz in this equation, mostly completely behind the curtain,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and so it's been really cool getting to flex a
- 0:58Speaker 1: new muscle, so to speak, in that I've been working
- 1:02Speaker 1: on my own gosh nine years, ten years now, I
- 1:08Speaker 1: have been my own boss, and I'm still my own boss.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Don't get it twisted. But this is the closest that
- 1:13Speaker 1: I've come in a long time to working in house,
- 1:17Speaker 1: constantly communicating with different team members and obviously chatting a
- 1:21Speaker 1: lot with Coach b and so it feels really fun
- 1:23Speaker 1: to be a part of a team. And it's a
- 1:26Speaker 1: big project, and so I'm still doing all the other
- 1:29Speaker 1: things that I want to do. I'm still obviously out
- 1:32Speaker 1: here editing, producing, booking, recording, being hyped about hurdle. It's
- 1:38Speaker 1: my baby and it's not going anywhere, and it's a lot.
- 1:43Speaker 1: There's a lot. There's a lot of balls in the air.
- 1:46Speaker 1: It's what I'm trying to say, which is why it
- 1:48Speaker 1: almost feels There's two things that I'm noticing right now.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The first thing that I'm noticing is that I am
- 1:55Speaker 1: more dialed in than ever. I am someone who loves
- 1:58Speaker 1: a time to do. If I am feeling extremely overwhelmed,
- 2:03Speaker 1: not only will I make it to do list, but
- 2:05Speaker 1: the next thing that I will do is then I
- 2:07Speaker 1: will make it a schedule. So if on your daily
- 2:11Speaker 1: to do list, for example, it is for me, produce
- 2:16Speaker 1: podcast episode, sit in on recording, write a newsletter, maybe
- 2:24Speaker 1: I have two to three different meetings, then it's draft
- 2:28Speaker 1: proposal for this brand to do this thing. You get
- 2:31Speaker 1: the gist. I would then give each of those things
- 2:35Speaker 1: an estimated time that it could take to complete and
- 2:39Speaker 1: then schedule them in my day. And then that way
- 2:41Speaker 1: I'm holding myself accountable. I think by also recording on YouTube,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I'm going to notice how much I move my hands
- 2:48Speaker 1: when I talk. I digress. So I actually think that
- 2:52Speaker 1: being this busy and being excited about all the things
- 2:55Speaker 1: that I'm so busy with is really fulfilling me and
- 2:59Speaker 1: it's helping me be more productive. I really feel like
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm my best employee right now. And the other thing
- 3:10Speaker 1: is that I feel like I need to be, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 1: doing as good as I can in each of those blocks. Now,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I every single day will say consistency over perfection, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: I truly believe that. But I also know how important
- 3:27Speaker 1: so many of the things that are a part of
- 3:29Speaker 1: my routine are to help me feel like my best self.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And so, for instance, in story time this morning, I
- 3:37Speaker 1: had a run workout. It was a mile warm up,
- 3:43Speaker 1: a k at seven forty five pace, a k at
- 3:47Speaker 1: seven fifteen pace directly into another k at seven forty
- 3:50Speaker 1: five pace, one more k at seven fifteen pace, ninety
- 3:53Speaker 1: second recovery, recovery, one mile cool down. And so that
- 3:57Speaker 1: was the workout. And if you are in New York
- 4:00Speaker 1: and the Northeast, maybe you know what's going on. But
- 4:03Speaker 1: there's a lot of smoke coming down from those Canadian wildfires,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and so the AQI this morning, the air quality was
- 4:11Speaker 1: I think something around one point forty, which I checked
- 4:14Speaker 1: with my girl Gemini. She said it's very dangerous out there.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And I remember distinctly when we had all of those
- 4:21Speaker 1: air issues a few years ago, that for me, it
- 4:25Speaker 1: wouldn't be in the moment that maybe running didn't feel okay,
- 4:28Speaker 1: but then days later I would be coughing. And so
- 4:30Speaker 1: I knew from walking outside last night. I mean I
- 4:34Speaker 1: walked outside to go to the live show that I
- 4:37Speaker 1: did with Beck's Gentry at Rivan that episode will be
- 4:40Speaker 1: live on the Hurdle Feed next week. I walked outside
- 4:43Speaker 1: and it literally felt like I walked into a cloud
- 4:46Speaker 1: of no boy, now not good. So I knew I
- 4:52Speaker 1: was going to do this workout on the treadmill, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: I was dreading it. Thankfully, so far in this training cycle,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I've done so much of my running, if not a
- 4:59Speaker 1: majory ready of it outside. But running tempo, running fast
- 5:04Speaker 1: is always challenging period, and I would argue it's even
- 5:09Speaker 1: more challenging on a tread because you have less to
- 5:14Speaker 1: distract yourself. Although you can get into this mode where
- 5:16Speaker 1: it's like set it and forget it, I just knew
- 5:19Speaker 1: that it was going to require me to be really
- 5:23Speaker 1: mentally dialed in, and so I walked into the gym
- 5:28Speaker 1: and I put my hair up and I got my
- 5:30Speaker 1: act together and I just said, this is how it
- 5:33Speaker 1: is now. And something that I was repeating to myself
- 5:36Speaker 1: this morning as I showed up to do this workout
- 5:38Speaker 1: is I am someone that does hard things. That was it.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I just kept saying to myself, I am someone who
- 5:43Speaker 1: does hard things. I know that to be true. I
- 5:45Speaker 1: have evidence to prove that I'm someone who's run fifteen marathons.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You don't do a marathon because you're not someone that
- 5:53Speaker 1: knows and accepts and appreciates doing hard things. And so
- 5:58Speaker 1: I showed up this morning and I kept repeating to myself,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I am someone that does hard things. And I did
- 6:03Speaker 1: the hard thing, and I felt really proud of my
- 6:07Speaker 1: back to what I was saying about it's a busy season,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and I'm showing up with diligence and consistency and understanding
- 6:12Speaker 1: that sometimes it's not going to be the absolute best
- 6:16Speaker 1: that I have to offer. But today not only was
- 6:19Speaker 1: the absolute best that I had to offer the prescribed situation,
- 6:25Speaker 1: but it made me feel really good. And so I
- 6:28Speaker 1: recognize that it won't always be that, and I get
- 6:32Speaker 1: really stoked when I can check something off in the
- 6:34Speaker 1: way that I intended, and that is the five Minute
- 6:38Speaker 1: Friday this week. My listener prompt for you this week
- 6:41Speaker 1: if you're watching this on YouTube, which it'll be wild
- 6:44Speaker 1: if you are. And I won't say that in every episode,
- 6:47Speaker 1: but right now I feel like I need to tie
- 6:48Speaker 1: it all together. I will also put a link to
- 6:50Speaker 1: subscribe to the show on YouTube and then to the
- 6:54Speaker 1: YouTube in the show notes. If you were listening to this,
- 6:57Speaker 1: my listener prompt for you this week, where in your
- 7:00Speaker 1: life can you give yourself a little bit more grace?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Where in your life right now? Can you give yourself
- 7:08Speaker 1: a little bit more grace? And now a listener question.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Hey Emily, my name is Jamie. I've been listening to
- 7:17Speaker 1: Hurdle since twenty twenty two or twenty twenty three. I
- 7:20Speaker 1: love the podcast. Thank you. I was wondering if you
- 7:22Speaker 1: could go back to your first marathon, what would you
- 7:25Speaker 1: do differently and what advice would you tell someone training
- 7:28Speaker 1: for their first marathon. I'm training for my first marathon,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and oh wow, I'm training for my first marathon. I'm
- 7:38Speaker 1: going to cut and donate twenty six inches of hair
- 7:41Speaker 1: for each mile I ran. I had to read that twice.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I was a little confused. That's so awesome, Jamie. Congrats. Okay,
- 7:47Speaker 1: so the question is if I could go back to
- 7:49Speaker 1: my first marathon, what would I do differently and what
- 7:51Speaker 1: advice would I tell someone training for theirs. The first
- 7:55Speaker 1: thing I will say is, right now we are overexposed.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I would argue to so much information and so many
- 8:03Speaker 1: different opinions, and there are so many things that you
- 8:05Speaker 1: could be doing quote unquote right while gearing up for
- 8:08Speaker 1: your first marathon. I truly believe that the biggest rule
- 8:12Speaker 1: of running your first marathon, well, there's two. The first
- 8:16Speaker 1: rule is you might have like a quasi time goal,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but that first marathon isn't about your time. That first
- 8:21Speaker 1: marathon is strictly about finishing it, putting your best effort
- 8:27Speaker 1: in on the day. Okay. My second rule is you
- 8:31Speaker 1: have to train for it. So you do say that
- 8:33Speaker 1: you're training for a Jamie, which makes me very happy.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But please, please please, it is a buzzy thing right now.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Running is wildly popular. My biggest piece of advice for
- 8:42Speaker 1: anyone gearing up for their first marathon is actually put
- 8:45Speaker 1: in the work. Ask yourself, why is it that I'm
- 8:48Speaker 1: doing it? I love it that Jamie has this goal
- 8:51Speaker 1: to donate hair as a part of her process. That's
- 8:53Speaker 1: so special, and I also hope that Jamie is enjoying
- 8:57Speaker 1: the journey because with marathon training, as with many other
- 9:02Speaker 1: things in life that we do that are hard things,
- 9:04Speaker 1: the journey really is a destination and you need to
- 9:07Speaker 1: find the fun, especially in something that has such a
- 9:10Speaker 1: massive opportunity cost. So training for your first marathon, actually
- 9:15Speaker 1: do the training. And the second thing is no time goal.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Go out there, do the best you can with what
- 9:22Speaker 1: you have, have a good time, and be proud of
- 9:25Speaker 1: yourself because it's a hard thing. Who make sure you're
- 9:30Speaker 1: following along with Hurdle over on Instagram. It's over at
- 9:34Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily a Body Another hurdle conquered.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
