- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medore, a metro area lawyer, raising the alarm
- 0:08Speaker 2: about the number of sexual assault nurse examiners in the province.
- 0:13Speaker 2: There are only two nurses available in the province 24-7
- 0:15Speaker 2: who are trained for that kind of work. One in St.
- 0:18Speaker 2: John's and one in Cornerbrook. That's a serious concern for
- 0:22Speaker 2: lawyer Lynn Moore. She told VOCM Open Line with Brian
- 0:25Speaker 2: Callahan that leaves a serious gap in rural parts.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It's very important for the administration of justice that people
- 0:35Speaker 1: have access to someone who's been trained in trauma-informed practices
- 0:40Speaker 1: to help someone through what is a pretty invasive and
- 0:45Speaker 1: unpleasant gynecological examination after a sexual assault. And, of course,
- 0:51Speaker 1: when that has to be done, it has to be
- 0:54Speaker 1: done in a very timely fashion or else the biological
- 0:57Speaker 1: evidence is lost.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Meanwhile, Premier Tony Wakeham agrees that increased access to sexual
- 1:04Speaker 2: assault nurse examiners is needed.
- 1:07Speaker 3: My minister talked about that recently, and absolutely, I mean,
- 1:10Speaker 3: that's something that needs that. Look, we ought to be
- 1:13Speaker 3: doing and working on improving, making our community safer, making
- 1:18Speaker 3: our workplaces safer. And that should be a goal for
- 1:20Speaker 3: no matter what government's in power, and it's something that
- 1:22Speaker 3: we certainly have to look at. But I look forward
- 1:24Speaker 3: to working with the people in the industries to make
- 1:26Speaker 3: that happen.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The province's flu season off to an early start. The
- 1:30Speaker 2: total number of lab-confirmed cases of the illness at 10
- 1:34Speaker 2: as of October 4th. The province's influenza dashboard was updated
- 1:39Speaker 2: last Friday, showing two flu-related hospitalizations, one of which involves
- 1:44Speaker 2: a patient in critical care. Flu and COVID vaccine clinics
- 1:49Speaker 2: now up and running across the province, while pharmacies are
- 1:52Speaker 2: also taking vaccine bookings. RCMP doing training exercises today and
- 1:58Speaker 2: tomorrow in the area of the Echo Pond Environmental Education
- 2:01Speaker 2: Center at Tower Road and Salmon Air Line. Area residents
- 2:06Speaker 2: can expect to see an increased police presence. The training
- 2:09Speaker 2: involves the RCMP's Emergency Response Team, RNC's Tactics and Rescue Unit,
- 2:15Speaker 2: Police Dog Services, a helicopter, various police vehicles and drones. Meanwhile,
- 2:20Speaker 2: training is also taking place in the Pippi Park area
- 2:23Speaker 2: between 8.30 and 2 this afternoon. Police are asking the
- 2:26Speaker 2: public to avoid that area and refrain from sharing photos,
- 2:30Speaker 2: video or details. A group of philanthropists has donated $ 2. 7
- 2:36Speaker 2: million to four organizations on Bell Island in an effort
- 2:39Speaker 2: to reignite the community's economy. The North Pine Foundation made
- 2:44Speaker 2: the announcement yesterday in Wabana. The funding will be split
- 2:48Speaker 2: among the YMCA, the local CBDC, the Bell Island Support Network,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and the Minor Hockey Association's Youth Employment Program, with each
- 2:56Speaker 2: group receiving half a million or more. Mark Lane, who's
- 3:01Speaker 2: with the foundation, believes the cash injection will help turn
- 3:04Speaker 2: the island's economy around and create opportunities. That's your news.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medour.
