- 0:26Speaker 1: Orleans Saints embark on this new era of Saints football,
- 0:31Speaker 1: every day and every step there's a new development, so
- 0:34Speaker 1: we're of course going to follow it as we go along.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Mickey Loomis met with reporters on Monday, first time since
- 0:41Speaker 1: his season rap press conference. And actually that was Darren Rizzy,
- 0:46Speaker 1: you know, the day after the season ended on that
- 0:47Speaker 1: Black Monday. But Mickey Loomis met with reporters on Monday
- 0:51Speaker 1: and a lengthy press conference where they covered a lot
- 0:55Speaker 1: of ground. And I believe in this offseason, obviously the
- 1:01Speaker 1: most important thing you're going to do is hire a coach.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Who is your new head coach. That's going to be
- 1:06Speaker 1: number one. If there is a one A or A
- 1:09Speaker 1: one B or a very close number two. It's you
- 1:13Speaker 1: got to make a decision on Derek Carr and what's
- 1:16Speaker 1: going to happen there? Can you play number twenty please?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Here us a little back and forth about Derek Carr's contract,
- 1:21Speaker 1: which we talked about last week. He wouldn't take a
- 1:24Speaker 1: take different approach, but he had a fifty one million.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Dollars Habet, there's already comfortable going into the season with him, saying,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I think all that needs to be you know, has
- 1:32Speaker 2: yet to be determined.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So not willing to really determine what they're going to
- 1:40Speaker 1: do with Derek Carr's contract. I think that very short
- 1:49Speaker 1: answer speaks volumes because the fact that the door is
- 1:54Speaker 1: at least even open to moving on from Derek Carr
- 1:57Speaker 1: tells you they are considering moving on from Derek car
- 2:01Speaker 1: I mean, if if they were put it.
- 2:03Speaker 3: In another way.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You look around the league, there are certain quarterback situations
- 2:09Speaker 1: that are unmistakable, like you know who the starting quarterback is.
- 2:16Speaker 1: This isn't a debate. There are questions like Minnesota's got
- 2:19Speaker 1: a question, what do you do with Sam Darnold? I
- 2:21Speaker 1: mean you drafted JJ McCarthy was injured, you play Donald
- 2:24Speaker 1: Donald leeds you to fourteen wins.
- 2:25Speaker 3: What do you do? It's a big question.
- 2:27Speaker 1: There's no question in Washington, there's no question in really
- 2:31Speaker 1: in Carolina anymore with Bryce Young, like there's no question
- 2:34Speaker 1: in spots around the league. Now, obviously there's no question
- 2:37Speaker 1: in Kansas City or Buffalo and Cincinnati. We understand those.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So I have the best quarterbacks in the NFL. But
- 2:42Speaker 1: the fact that he didn't pound the table and declaratively
- 2:46Speaker 1: say Derek Carr is our quarterback tells you they realize
- 2:50Speaker 1: he may not be the quarterback next year, and a
- 2:53Speaker 1: new k head coach may have a lot to say
- 2:54Speaker 1: in that. That's something else. Mickey Loomis was asked about
- 2:57Speaker 1: about having a new coaching staff have a say in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the quarterback.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Well, I have, like I like to say, in quarterback direction.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Now, maybe you so, and not saying maybe the staffing
- 3:12Speaker 1: does a coach out with Queen Slay to Kyre whoever
- 3:15Speaker 1: he wants.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Is there anyone that you're saying has.
- 3:17Speaker 2: To be part of that? No, No, I believe in
- 3:21Speaker 2: the head coach determining his staff, and.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Absolutely believe in a head coach determining his staff. So
- 3:30Speaker 1: it sounds like Mickey Loomis is going to give that
- 3:33Speaker 1: new coach, whomever may be, autonomy to hire their staff
- 3:38Speaker 1: and certainly look at who they want to be the quarterback.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So it's a massive decision which direction they go. H
- 3:43Speaker 1: One more though, and this is thirteen, if we could.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Mickey Loomis was asked just flatly his confidence level in
- 3:49Speaker 1: Derek Carr.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I have a high level of confidence in Derek. You know, listen,
- 3:53Speaker 2: he did some really good things here. He has done
- 3:55Speaker 2: some really good things here. If he had qualified, which
- 3:58Speaker 2: I'm not sure if he did, I mean quarterback rating
- 4:00Speaker 2: and be in the top ten. IS interception rating would
- 4:03Speaker 2: be in the top ten. IS guards per temp would
- 4:06Speaker 2: be in the top ten. Unders some really tough circumstances.
- 4:08Speaker 2: When you don't have you your top two receivers and
- 4:11Speaker 2: you don't have a special weapon in Taysom Hill, and
- 4:13Speaker 2: we don't have the middle portion of our offensive line
- 4:16Speaker 2: and we have a rookie left tackle, there's some tough
- 4:18Speaker 2: circumstances for a quarterback to deal with. So I think
- 4:21Speaker 2: he's done a lot of really good things.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Those are tough circumstances, and a lot of more circumstances
- 4:26Speaker 1: that you created. But the fact that despite all the
- 4:32Speaker 1: superlatives that Lumas just lauded in Derek Carr, when you
- 4:35Speaker 1: come back to it, and he was asked point blank
- 4:37Speaker 1: about are you willing to carry a fifty one million
- 4:39Speaker 1: dollar number for Derek Carr?
- 4:41Speaker 3: And he said, well, I have made those decisions.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yet it tells you at least they are open to
- 4:44Speaker 1: the possibility of moving on from Derek Carr. So I
- 4:48Speaker 1: am moderately encouraged. He did not say Derek Carr is
- 4:54Speaker 1: coming back. So I think it is largely going to
- 4:56Speaker 1: depend on who the head coach is. You hire that
- 4:58Speaker 1: head coach first, and then that head coach going to
- 5:00Speaker 1: make the decision if he wants Derek Carr to be
- 5:03Speaker 1: his starting quarterback. I mean, Mickey Luomas just laid that
- 5:06Speaker 1: out for you. He believes in giving that coach autonomy
- 5:08Speaker 1: to hire a staff, and certainly it's gonna be the
- 5:10Speaker 1: same thing with who the quarterback is. And I'm gonna
- 5:13Speaker 1: repeat today the same thing I've said about Derek Carr
- 5:16Speaker 1: all along, great guy, seems like a very good human being, man, husband, father, teammate,
- 5:21Speaker 1: all that stuff, all those things that are way more
- 5:23Speaker 1: important in life. But we also know what Derek Carr
- 5:26Speaker 1: is as a starting quarterback in the NFL. In eleven
- 5:30Speaker 1: seasons now, as a starting quarterback, he has had a
- 5:33Speaker 1: winning record three times, and one of those was the
- 5:37Speaker 1: nine to eight season in New Orleans last year when
- 5:40Speaker 1: they went on the winning streak at the end of
- 5:41Speaker 1: the season when they were already out of everything, and
- 5:43Speaker 1: they beat up on the bottom feeders in the NFL.
- 5:46Speaker 1: In eleven seasons as a starting quarterback, chew playoff appearances
- 5:51Speaker 1: in eleven seasons as a starting quarterback, he is the
- 5:56Speaker 1: first quarterback in the history of the NFL to lose
- 5:59Speaker 1: to one teams in twenty twenty three in New Orleans,
- 6:04Speaker 1: he was nine and eight and twenty twenty four in
- 6:06Speaker 1: New Orleans. Fight all the good things that Mickey Lumas
- 6:08Speaker 1: just said. The Saints were five and five with Derek
- 6:10Speaker 1: carrs the quarterback. He is the thing that I have
- 6:14Speaker 1: said he is since literally the day they signed him.
- 6:18Speaker 1: He is a mid quarterback. He is a lower mid tier,
- 6:22Speaker 1: upper bottom tier quarterback in the NFL. You want to
- 6:25Speaker 1: bring Derek Carr back, cool, You're gonna go eight nine,
- 6:28Speaker 1: nine and eight, seven and ten you're not gonna be
- 6:31Speaker 1: bad enough to draft at the top and get your
- 6:33Speaker 1: franchise quarterback. But you're never gonna be good enough to
- 6:35Speaker 1: win the division, make the playoffs, to compete for a championship.
- 6:38Speaker 3: So what do you want to be?
- 6:40Speaker 1: You want to be a middling team with Derek Carr
- 6:42Speaker 1: is your quarterback, who's gonna do all the things Loomas said, right,
- 6:44Speaker 1: it's gonna throw for a lot of yards because he
- 6:47Speaker 1: that's what he is. We are dain him here. He
- 6:49Speaker 1: is the emperor of empty yards. We are dained him here,
- 6:55Speaker 1: the emperor of yard. I mean, I'm not surprised that
- 7:01Speaker 1: he throws for a lot of yards. To what he does,
- 7:04Speaker 1: You get down and then he's chucking the ball around.
- 7:07Speaker 1: What he doesn't do is win games. So I'm not
- 7:11Speaker 1: just going to sit here and throw out mandates that
- 7:14Speaker 1: you cut a guy without a solution. I've told you
- 7:16Speaker 1: what my solution is, and you've seen other franchises do this.
- 7:20Speaker 1: The Philadelphia Eagles made a very tough decision on Carson Wentz.
- 7:23Speaker 1: They gave Carson Wentz a massive contract, Nick Foles won
- 7:27Speaker 1: a Super Bowl, Wentz couldn't live up to it, and
- 7:29Speaker 1: ultimately they moved on. They ate a thirty three point
- 7:32Speaker 1: eight million dollar dead number Philadelphia did They said, you
- 7:36Speaker 1: know what, we recognize this guy isn't going to get
- 7:39Speaker 1: us where we want to go. So they ate the number,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and you know what it netted them, Jalen Hurts and
- 7:46Speaker 1: they're franchise right now. Could I mean the two seed
- 7:51Speaker 1: in the NFC. They're in the division run of the playoffs,
- 7:53Speaker 1: might be going back to a super Bowl. The Denver
- 7:57Speaker 1: Broncos a fifty three million dollar dead number on Russell Wilson.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know what it netted them, Bonnicks and they were
- 8:07Speaker 1: in the playoffs this year with Bonex as a rookie.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It is not easy, especially as a leader, to acknowledge
- 8:15Speaker 1: your shortcomings, to acknowledge your misses. But the New Orleans
- 8:20Speaker 1: Saints missed. They waste They wasted one hundred million dollars
- 8:25Speaker 1: of Gale Benz's money by signing Derek Carr one hundred
- 8:28Speaker 1: million on that contract was guaranteed. They have wasted that
- 8:30Speaker 1: money they missed. So it's the old sunk costs fallacy.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Are you gonna keep sticking with Derek Carr while you
- 8:42Speaker 1: continue to regress as an organization? Or are you gonna
- 8:44Speaker 1: acknowledge your mistake, cut ties, and start building toward what
- 8:48Speaker 1: your future will be. That's my preference. Be done with
- 8:52Speaker 1: Derek Carr, play Spencer Rattler this year. Go get a
- 8:56Speaker 1: cheap veteran somewhere on the market. I'm talking the Jacobie
- 9:00Speaker 1: Brissette market here, the guy that's never going to be
- 9:03Speaker 1: a franchise quarterback anywhere but has started. So you get
- 9:05Speaker 1: somebody with some experience. Twenty twenty five is going to
- 9:08Speaker 1: be miserable again, but it's going to put you in
- 9:11Speaker 1: a position next year at this time to draft your
- 9:14Speaker 1: franchise quarterback.
- 9:15Speaker 3: That's my preference.
- 9:16Speaker 1: That's what I would like to see happen, and maybe,
- 9:18Speaker 1: just maybe maybe Mickey Loomis is starting to see that.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It is if you want the pie in the sky scenario,
- 9:28Speaker 1: it is what Cincinnati did. They hired Zach Taylor, they
- 9:31Speaker 1: were in a terrible situation, they bought himed out, They
- 9:33Speaker 1: drafted Joe Burrow, won four games in Burrow's first year.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Next year they're in a super Bowl.
- 9:40Speaker 1: With the acknowledgment and understanding for whatever coach is coming
- 9:43Speaker 1: in that they are coming into a full on rebuild,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and you are committed to that you can have success.
- 9:48Speaker 1: There are their roadmaps all over the NFL to show
- 9:50Speaker 1: you how. That's why we always say it's a copycat league.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Their roadmaps to success all over the NFL. Pick one
- 9:57Speaker 1: that's worked and walk down that path. In that path,
- 10:01Speaker 1: by the way back to a championship does not include
- 10:03Speaker 1: Derek Carr, and I really don't.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Think it should include MICKEYL. Loomis either,
