Latest / Brandon Fogal Evolution / #328 - Joe Rogan, Tim Dillon & the Book of Enoch: Why was it Left out of the Bible?
Transcript
- 0:00Joe Rogan and Tim Dillon got into the Book of Enoch, discussed it on the podcast
- 0:04they did this week, and it was pretty enlightening and pretty exciting to hear
- 0:10these guys getting into it because it raises a lot of questions.
- 0:14I don't know about you. For me, it does. I want to know what happened. Why was it excluded?
- 0:18But you might be, this is a notable exception. Despite its universal rejection
- 0:23by Jewish authorities and mainstream Christian denominations,
- 0:26It was preserved in its entirety by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church,
- 0:32which still includes it in the official biblical canon.
- 0:35All right. But we're going to take a look at Joe Rogan and Tim Dillon discussing this.
- 0:40Is in the same Dead Sea Scrolls as they found the book of Isaiah.
- 0:43Totally. The same collection of these religious texts.
- 0:47And it's all about how the Watchers came down and mated with the daughters of
- 0:52man and chose them as wives and then created this race of beings called the
- 0:56Nephilim, which were giants that ruled the earth.
- 0:59In the Bible, they talk about the Nephilim. In the Bible, they talk about Enoch.
- 1:06Like, he's referenced in the Bible.
- 1:08But the book of Enoch, the stories that are in the book of Enoch,
- 1:11are fucking bananas. Like, completely bananas.
- 1:15And the only reason why it's not in the Bible, a bunch of rabbis decided that
- 1:18it didn't align with the Torah. The Torah, the Talmud, I forget which one.
- 1:22But they decided, like, this contradicts some of the stories that are in other religious texts.
- 1:29So we're going to keep that one out. Interesting.
- 1:32It was a collection of these things that's all together. Who were these rabbis? Exactly.
- 1:39Just that itself. So I've heard a lot of different reasons why it's excluded.
- 1:43I'd also heard that because there was a very strong depiction of this son of
- 1:47man, this figure in the future who would come. And it almost exactly represents, it looks like Jesus.
- 1:54So maybe that was also taken into account that why it wasn't included.
- 1:58But here's some primary reasons why it was excluded. A lack of original Hebrew
- 2:03canonization. The ancient Jewish community and later rabbis did not accept it
- 2:07as inspired scripture, so it was never included in the Hebrew Bible.
- 2:10It was also not part of the Septuagint.
- 2:12The Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures used in Jesus' time.
- 2:16I don't even know how to say that word. I feel like Evan Almighty.
- 2:22Pseudepigraphal authorship. They don't think it's the same author.
- 2:26It probably wasn't Enoch. I mean, when we're thinking Enoch,
- 2:29the actual Enoch, that's before Noah.
- 2:33That's before the flood in this world. So...
- 2:36It's very rare that it, but could there have been a tradition that was passed
- 2:40down and it was kind of kept together?
- 2:43And because the authors of even the New Testament, they reference,
- 2:47they like quote from the book of Enoch and they allude to it very strongly because
- 2:52we can't get away from this event is even
- 2:55talked about in the actual Bible in Genesis.
- 2:59With right before Noah's flood, that the sons of God come and mate with the
- 3:04daughters of men. And they produced the, it says that the Nephilim were around in those days.
- 3:09So there was some type of event that actually happened. I do think that it was
- 3:13actual disobedient sons of God, which we think of as angels,
- 3:18that they did mate with actual women, you know, and produce this offspring.
- 3:24And that was why God brought the judgment of the flood. and so
- 3:28and even in the new testament it's talked about the new testament authors bring
- 3:31it up and they allude to it they talk about the angels that left their proper abode
- 3:35and so they are kept in chains of darkness you know held to that great day and
- 3:39i i think that even when we talk about demons i do i no longer just see them as just fallen angels
- 3:45i do see them as kind of the disembodied spirits of the nephilim like remaining
- 3:50because they're not fully man they're not fully angel.
- 3:54They don't really have a place to go. So they just kind of, since the time of
- 3:57the flood, they're still wandering here. And then they kind of embody people.
- 4:01That's what is happening of demons, what we think of as demons.
- 4:06But it's certainly an interesting way of thinking about it.
- 4:10A lot of people, when they come into the faith, they're not ready for this.
- 4:13But once you actually get entrenched in the Bible, it's even there.
- 4:16So it's not even just in the book of Enoch. The book of Enoch just blows it
- 4:20all open. All right, we'll leave it at that. Let me know what you all think.
- 4:23And I hope you all have a great Friday and great rest of your weekend. See y'all.
