- 0:00Speaker 1: And it came to pass after these things that his
- 0:03Speaker 1: master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Lie with me. Genesis 39.7 Dear Lord, as I work
- 0:13Speaker 1: diligently in my life to accomplish my goals and dreams,
- 0:17Speaker 1: I thank you, Lord, that because I place you first,
- 0:21Speaker 1: like Joseph, everything I touch, you cause to prosper. When
- 0:26Speaker 1: I'm thrown into the darkness of life because of my integrity,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I thank you that even in the prison of my despair,
- 0:34Speaker 1: your favor still follows me. I thank you that promotion
- 0:38Speaker 1: follows me in every season of my life. I thank
- 0:42Speaker 1: you that on mountaintops and in valley moments, your light
- 0:47Speaker 1: shines through me and causes the right people to look
- 0:50Speaker 1: in my direction with uncommon favor. Thank you that no
- 0:55Speaker 1: matter who tries to rise up against me, your hand
- 0:58Speaker 1: never departs from my life. Therefore, I will keep my
- 1:04Speaker 1: heart pure and know that even in the roughest times
- 1:07Speaker 1: of your plans for me, my family and my business,
- 1:12Speaker 1: they'll prevail. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for praying
- 1:21Speaker 1: with us today. Continue your time with God by listening
- 1:25Speaker 1: to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:37Speaker 2: From Palace to Prison Before this story, we learned about
- 1:42Speaker 2: Judah and Tamar, and God's faithfulness over family dysfunction. Before that,
- 1:49Speaker 2: Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers. Their hatred
- 1:53Speaker 2: and jealousy exiled Joseph to a life of labor and toil.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Israel thought Joseph was dead and grieved deeply. Now we
- 2:03Speaker 2: will learn about how Joseph, despite being a slave in
- 2:07Speaker 2: Egypt for Potiphar, was a man of integrity and favored
- 2:11Speaker 2: by the Lord, but was accused of wrongdoing by Potiphar's
- 2:14Speaker 2: wife and ended up in prison, inspired by the book
- 2:19Speaker 2: of Genesis.
- 2:22Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:24Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:28Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries. and can only come
- 2:31Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:34Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:37Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:39Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:43Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:45Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:49Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:53Speaker 3: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 2:55Speaker 3: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's JackGraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:03Speaker 3: you for your support. Previously, we saw how Joseph's brothers
- 3:08Speaker 3: sold him into slavery and that he was sent to Egypt.
- 3:11Speaker 3: We also heard of how Judah, the brother of Joseph,
- 3:15Speaker 3: sought to build a kingdom apart from his own family,
- 3:18Speaker 3: one that crumbled before his very eyes. Today, you will
- 3:22Speaker 3: hear a very different story. Joseph will be elevated from
- 3:26Speaker 3: slave to a position of great authority. More importantly, though, Joseph,
- 3:30Speaker 3: despite being removed from his father's home and estranged in
- 3:34Speaker 3: a land far away, would lean on God for his strength.
- 3:38Speaker 3: He will grow in maturity and integrity and determined to
- 3:41Speaker 3: always do what is right in the sight of God.
- 3:45Speaker 3: The future will look bright for Joseph, but his integrity
- 3:49Speaker 3: will be tested. As you listen, pay attention to how
- 3:53Speaker 3: Joseph responds to temptation. It is no mistake this story
- 3:58Speaker 3: immediately follows that of Jacob and Tamar because the two
- 4:02Speaker 3: men could not be more different in their actions. So
- 4:05Speaker 3: let's listen now to Joseph's story.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Now a slave in Egypt, Joseph worked diligently in the
- 4:13Speaker 2: house of Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of
- 4:17Speaker 2: the guard. Even in what seemed to be the worst
- 4:20Speaker 2: of circumstances, the favor of God was with Joseph. Every
- 4:24Speaker 2: task Joseph put his hand to succeeded, and Joseph worked
- 4:28Speaker 2: with an excellence that could not be ignored. His master
- 4:32Speaker 2: observed Joseph's success and kept him close because of it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Joseph found favor with Potiphar and became his closest servant.
- 4:42Speaker 2: He was charged with overseeing Potiphar's house, and all Potiphar
- 4:46Speaker 2: owned was under his care. God blessed his work, and
- 4:50Speaker 2: the Egyptians thrived for Joseph's sake. From the households to
- 4:55Speaker 2: the fields, Potiphar rejoiced in the labor and successes of
- 4:59Speaker 2: his valued servant and friend. Soon, all he had was
- 5:04Speaker 2: Joseph's to care for, all except the food he ate
- 5:08Speaker 2: and the wife he loved. Joseph grew up to be
- 5:11Speaker 2: a handsome and well-built man. His labor in the sun
- 5:15Speaker 2: had made him tan and muscular, and he was a
- 5:18Speaker 2: pleasant sight to all the women in Potiphar's household, including
- 5:22Speaker 2: his wife. Her eyes lingered as she watched Joseph perform
- 5:27Speaker 2: his tasks. Salaciously, she would lounge close to wherever Joseph worked.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Her eyes locked onto his, and she slowly approached him. Sensually,
- 5:38Speaker 2: she pressed her body against his and said, Lie with me, Joseph.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Joseph immediately refused. Because of me, my master doesn't have
- 5:48Speaker 2: to worry about anything, he said fearfully. He has put
- 5:52Speaker 2: everything under my care. No one in this house has
- 5:55Speaker 2: more authority than I, and he has not kept anything
- 5:58Speaker 2: from me except for you, because you are his wife.
- 6:02Speaker 2: He pushed her away, gently, trying to diffuse the situation.
- 6:07Speaker 2: How could I do that wickedness against him and God?
- 6:10Speaker 2: After saying this, Joseph left, but Potiphar's wife would not relent.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Day after day she spoke sensually to him, beckoning him
- 6:20Speaker 2: into her bedrooms. Yet Joseph remained upright, refusing every gesture politely.
- 6:27Speaker 2: One day, as the hot Egyptian sun was setting, Joseph
- 6:30Speaker 2: entered into the house to finish up his work. He
- 6:33Speaker 2: came in to discover all the men of the house
- 6:36Speaker 2: were gone. Turning the corner, he bumped into Potiphar's wife.
- 6:41Speaker 2: She was waiting for him. She smiled, grabbed him by
- 6:44Speaker 2: his garment, turned her lips close to Joseph's ear, and whispered,
- 6:48Speaker 2: Lie with me. This time, Joseph could not speak. He
- 6:53Speaker 2: turned his body towards the door, with her still grabbing
- 6:56Speaker 2: onto his garment. It slid off of him as she pulled,
- 7:00Speaker 2: but he did not turn back to get in. Instead
- 7:04Speaker 2: he ran. He ran down the hall and out of
- 7:06Speaker 2: the house, knowing full well he must get far away
- 7:10Speaker 2: from her, lest he stumbles. Embarrassed and teeming with anger,
- 7:15Speaker 2: she looked down to see Joseph's garment still in her hands.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Immediately she screamed for the guards, Help! she shouted. The
- 7:23Speaker 2: guards came to attention. See, this Hebrew mocks us. He
- 7:27Speaker 2: came to lie with me and I cried out for help.
- 7:30Speaker 2: As soon as he heard my screams, he left his
- 7:33Speaker 2: garment and fled. She continued to lie and weave stories
- 7:38Speaker 2: about Joseph until Potiphar returned home. See how your servant
- 7:43Speaker 2: has treated me, Potiphar's wife said, holding up his garment.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Joseph's master writhed with anger. Like a wildfire fueled by
- 7:52Speaker 2: a warm wind, Potiphar stormed out to find Joseph. Unable
- 7:56Speaker 2: to explain himself, Joseph once again found himself under a
- 8:00Speaker 2: fury of fists. Once again, Joseph found himself shackled by
- 8:05Speaker 2: people he cared for. And once again, Joseph was thrown
- 8:09Speaker 2: into the darkness. He was put in the prison where
- 8:12Speaker 2: the king's servants were confined. There he sat in the cold,
- 8:16Speaker 2: wondering why this was happening to him again. Yet God's
- 8:21Speaker 2: steadfast love met Joseph in the worst of circumstances. Favor
- 8:26Speaker 2: followed Joseph even in the dark depths of an Egyptian
- 8:29Speaker 2: prison cell. Joseph became admired by the keeper of the prison,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and Joseph began serving him. Soon Joseph became in charge
- 8:38Speaker 2: of all the prisoners who were there with him. As
- 8:41Speaker 2: it was before, whatever Joseph put his hand to was blessed.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Whatever needed to be done, he leaped at the opportunity.
- 8:48Speaker 2: The keeper of the prison leapt. paid no attention to
- 8:51Speaker 2: anything that was in his charge because the Lord was
- 8:54Speaker 2: with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Joseph is a bright young man, an excellent man. A
- 9:05Speaker 3: great spirit was in him. And with hard work, he
- 9:07Speaker 3: soon proves himself trustworthy to his master Potiphar, a man
- 9:12Speaker 3: in Egypt of great influence and power. When we live
- 9:16Speaker 3: with integrity, And when God blesses the work of our hands,
- 9:20Speaker 3: the outside world can't help but notice that there is
- 9:23Speaker 3: something different about us. That is what we see happening
- 9:27Speaker 3: in the life of Joseph. He was a man with
- 9:30Speaker 3: an excellent spirit. But not all attention is good attention.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Some will see your success and either be attracted to
- 9:36Speaker 3: you for unrighteous reasons, or they'll set their sights on
- 9:40Speaker 3: you to take you down. In Joseph's case, he experiences
- 9:45Speaker 3: the unwelcome attentions of a very lustful woman, Potiphar's wife.
- 9:51Speaker 3: She presents him an offer many young men would not
- 9:53Speaker 3: have turned down. In fact, the world would tell someone
- 9:56Speaker 3: to jump at the chance for a conquest. But Joseph
- 9:59Speaker 3: was different. He knew his master trusted him, and he
- 10:03Speaker 3: would not sacrifice his integrity and break that trust for
- 10:07Speaker 3: momentary pleasures. More importantly, much more importantly, Joseph would not
- 10:13Speaker 3: dishonor God in this way. The woman, however, would not relent.
- 10:18Speaker 3: And day after day, she threw herself at Joseph. And
- 10:22Speaker 3: day after day, he refused the temptation. How many times
- 10:26Speaker 3: are we able to resist temptation the first time, the second,
- 10:30Speaker 3: maybe the third, but then give in? That's why we
- 10:33Speaker 3: are told to flee, to run from temptation, because it
- 10:37Speaker 3: wears you down. It can beat you down and defeat you.
- 10:41Speaker 3: And so that's what Joseph did. He ran away. When
- 10:45Speaker 3: Potiphar's wife finally corners him in the palace alone, he
- 10:48Speaker 3: doesn't offer kind excuses or polite refusals. He runs. His
- 10:53Speaker 3: garment falls to the ground as he runs away, and
- 10:55Speaker 3: the scorned woman decides that since she can't have him,
- 10:59Speaker 3: she will make him pay. She accuses Joseph of assault,
- 11:03Speaker 3: and unable to defend himself, Joseph, who did the right thing,
- 11:08Speaker 3: is thrown into prison. From one pit to another, Joseph
- 11:13Speaker 3: is once again in chains. He's in a pit. He's
- 11:16Speaker 3: in a prison. And he is powerless. But he is
- 11:19Speaker 3: not alone. He is not abandoned. For even there in prison,
- 11:24Speaker 3: God shows his favor on Joseph and is with him. Soon,
- 11:28Speaker 3: Joseph becomes leader over all the other prisoners. Even in
- 11:32Speaker 3: this moment, God is preparing Joseph with the skills that
- 11:36Speaker 3: will one day help him serve well in the land
- 11:39Speaker 3: of Egypt. But for now, Joseph must look to God
- 11:43Speaker 3: even when he cannot see the future. and lean on
- 11:46Speaker 3: him and trust him with all his heart. And that
- 11:49Speaker 3: is exactly what he does. Dear Lord, help us to
- 11:52Speaker 3: follow Joseph's beautiful example of integrity and run away from temptation.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Resist the devil, and that we would honor you with
- 12:01Speaker 3: all of our actions. We know there might be a
- 12:04Speaker 3: high cost to this, but we also know that you
- 12:07Speaker 3: are faithful to sustain us and never leave us. Thank
- 12:10Speaker 3: you for your enduring love and kindness. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
- 12:19Speaker 3: And before we go, I wanted to let you know
