- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's me, Kyle Meredith today, welcoming Lizzie Haleback.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Lizzie, the leather jacket wearing guitar, sling, and powerhouse behind Hellstorm.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: The Pennsylvania Hard Rock band, she co-founded with her brother RJ back in the late nineties when she was barely a teenager.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: She's known for those skyscraper vocals and songs that toggle between ferocious anthems on apologetically messy confessionals
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: She's one of the rare modern rock singers who can go from screaming in your face to cruning like a torch singer without breaking a sweat.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: Lizzy's also become a fixture outside of her own band, leading her voice to everyone from slash to Evan Essence, proving she's basically the Swiss army knife of hard rock.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and when Skidrow found themselves without a singer recently, guess who ended up fronting that band for a stint.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: Right, because Lizzy doesn't do off duty.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: And now she's back with Hailstorm with a brand new album called Everest.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: Written and recorded in real time with Dave Cobb Lizzy's gonna dive into the freedom of letting go of genre rules the the joy of seeing fans already seeing in those new songs.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: how instant classics like darkness always wins were born out of raw in the moment of motion.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Lizzie's also going to reflect on nearly thirty years of the band, balancing who she was at twenty-two with who she is now, how performing live is equal parts graded to connection in great people watching.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: All that and more as we talk Everest, it's Kyle Meredith with Lizzie Hale of Hailstorm.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_03]: How you doing?
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm well, how you doing?
- 3:17[SPEAKER_03]: hanging out or get a day off in Chicago today and going to wander around do some stuff, I guess.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: So.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: Sure you know the town enough by this point.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we've we've been here a couple times so.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: No, she can't go in bed.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: She can't go in bed.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: You have a bad place to be stuck for the day.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, yeah, it's all right.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_03]: There are far worse.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_03]: You know, there could be a Bucks North Tennessee, which is, you know, the only two things in that town are as a diner and an adult bookstore and a band gas station.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_03]: That's, that's, we, we broke down there once.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: I shouldn't be surprised.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I mean, I'm in Kentucky.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, every state's got their weirdly name, but I've never heard of Bucks North.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: So that's
- 3:59[SPEAKER_03]: had to be somebody's last name because nobody would do that on purpose.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, that's true.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much for having me.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_03]: It's great to see your face.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's great to see you again, especially with a really, really great new record.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: This is again powerful and melodic and all the other adjectives that go along with this.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_03]: I appreciate it.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's good.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's a good feeling to have it out.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you spend so much time working on something and then you get it finished and then it's like, you know, it's a closely kept secret for the longest time and, you know, in the words of the late great Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_03]: So
- 4:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we're just happy to have it out.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_03]: And it seems like almost immediately, you know, we're out on tour right now.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, seeing a lot of people singing along already, which is amazing to me.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen some of those videos, the ladies singing along to, I believe it's watchouts that you posted.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: That was, uh, it's fun.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_03]: Of course.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_03]: Why not?
- 5:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's supposed to be fun.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, right.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: We were out on tour.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: And to get that moment, I guess, like,
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you're at the point now, a health storm has been around almost thirty years more or less, right?
- 5:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, twenty-eight years since our first show as Hale Storm, my brother and I, the school county fair, back in ninety-seven, and then in June, I think we celebrated this twenty-two years, same four members, all four of us together, so
- 5:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's so we've been around.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's my point, you know, like to go out there and see people singing the new songs because you get a band that's been around for a long enough.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously you've got the catalog that, you know, that's what they're usually coming for, you know, but here they are, like, and this is the record to do it.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I know I've already complimented the record, but like there are instant classics on this record, like immediately, and you see them connecting that fast, like that's got to be nice.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy because during the making of this album, we kind of rediscovered how to trust ourselves.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_03]: And we didn't have a whole lot of time to think about what everyone else is going to think about the album.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_03]: It was going to very much a desert island mentality.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: out in Savannah, Georgia, recording this record.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_03]: We were writing and recording in real time.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_03]: So we weren't thinking about necessarily what we have done, you know, because there was no time for that.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_03]: And there, nor was there time for us to think about what people's opinions were going to be in the future.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_03]: So we were kind of living in the moment.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_03]: And so our dividing rod was, well, does it get us excited or not?
- 6:54[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and ultimately that's just kind of lowest common denominator.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_03]: That's that was the standard.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_03]: And so it's it's always amazing.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_03]: I think when the things that we get really excited about get other people excited because in this business there are the
- 7:11[SPEAKER_03]: The illusion of rules, you know, illusion of like, oh, other people, you know, have different opinions.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you know, there's a science to writing a hit for the radio or or, you know, all of those, all of the theories that float around and ultimately.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_03]: you know, steal you, you know, steal your own self-worth and confidence and all of that because you're like, well, it's the industry.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_03]: Somebody's got to be smarter than me.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_03]: And so it's just amazing that, you know, when those things work out and you realize that the thing, you know, the thing that got you excited gets everyone else excited, you realize almost
- 7:51[SPEAKER_03]: the inspiration kind of comes full circle where it's, you don't feel so alone in your own feelings for writing that because all of a sudden all these other people are relating to it.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_03]: So it's, it's really cool.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, of course, you know, about the industry and everything because the expectations to follow those rules, especially
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: if you are known in a genre, you know, heavy loud music, like that, like the rules of what that means.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: And there's some great heavy songs on here.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it starts with some great gut punches, but it is, you know, and not that you all haven't done that, of course, throughout your career, but it does feel evident on here that it's less about the genre and more about the song.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: That makes sense.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_03]: Um, you know, what is something that we, we get uncomfortable with is when we start painting ourselves into a box, you know, and it's like, okay, what, what defines what we are.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_03]: Um, you know, is it the most stream song?
- 8:52[SPEAKER_03]: Is it the, is it
- 8:54[SPEAKER_03]: you know, what you've done collectively in your past is they're like, you know, is there a formula to this?
- 9:00[SPEAKER_03]: No, I mean, you are, you know, every album is a snapshot of where you're adding your life and the collective whole makes up who you are.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_03]: But, you know, once we start limiting ourselves, you know, to what we think we are or what we think other people think we are, you know, the creativity kind of goes out the window, then all of a sudden you are
- 9:23[SPEAKER_03]: You know, limited to really just other people's opinions about what you are.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_03]: And then you don't really get to deep dive on who you are now.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's like, I can't I can't write another album like the strange case of hailstorm because I'm not.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_03]: you know, twenty to twenty three anymore, you know, and that was a different time in my life.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_03]: However, I can appreciate it every single time we do a live show and people know the word.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_03]: So it's, you know, when you're playing a live show, it's like you're almost like you're trying to show all of the things that you're about, you're past your present in your future.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_03]: So.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's Kyle.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: Mayor is with Lizzie Hale.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: And again, since we're talking about that, you know, having a catalog that goes back that far and everything, you know, if you are a successful act, one of the curses will say of being a successful act is you are forever having to represent someone that you were.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: But yes.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: And in some cases, you know, twenty years ago, this is who you were, this is a twenty-two-year-old, this is who you were, it's a teenager, whatever that means every single night when you get up their own stage.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like, how do you tap into that without making it seem fake, I guess?
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: Or how do you tap into that and not cringe it yourself?
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: Because we all know when we look back at our, you know, poetry from then, which is still amazing for a lot of other people for us personally.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like, oh man, that's... Yeah, did I have to say that in that way?
- 10:56[SPEAKER_03]: Um, yeah, I don't know.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_03]: I just, I think that
- 11:00[SPEAKER_03]: my mentality, especially when we play the song live, you know, is that, you know, once you release something, it's no longer yours, it's theirs.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_03]: So for me, I don't, I don't beat myself up too much, especially, you know, on stage, singing the song, the very singing, I get off every night and be like, oh, I thought this was so edgy back in the day.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's like, look at me being dangerous, you know.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, I don't know, I smile about it a lot, on stage.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_03]: you're seeing all of these people that know the words to this song and it caught them at a time in their life.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: And so I can appreciate the song or for what it is and not, it doesn't necessarily represent
- 11:46[SPEAKER_03]: me, yeah, my current me, you know, any more, but it was a part of my life.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_03]: And at one point in time, it was really important and to a lot of different people.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_03]: It was important to them.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's more like gratitude when you're on stage.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_03]: You know, or as you're just like,
- 12:02[SPEAKER_03]: It's really cool that people know any of these songs.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, my little brother, my guy's talk about this a lot.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_03]: We're a bunch of doorks from Pennsylvania came from humble beginnings.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: We didn't have a rich uncle in the business had no idea how to do any of this.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_03]: The fact that we can call this a career is like a flu garden and it should have never worked out.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_03]: So having that type of gratitude when you're on stage, I mean, wow.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_03]: Look at the, I had this moment last night on stage, there's a guy in an older, hailstorm t-shirt that I recognized from probably about ten years ago, and he was like right in the middle of the crowd, having the time of his life just like the biggest smile on his face, the entire time.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, isn't that crazy?
- 12:48[SPEAKER_03]: that that guy decided to get that T-shirt like ten years ago.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_03]: And it's still coming to one of our shows and it's still enjoying himself.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's like, um, that's, I don't know.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like that stuff doesn't happen every day.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's also worth pointing out like we forget that you all up there, watch everything.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: You can see everything.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like that guy.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if he's noticing the most in the same way that you are, you know, noticing him or whatever, but I love it.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like I'm also guessing that usually means that you get to see all the weird stuff, whatever.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_03]: It isn't just thing how you're looking at it from like, you know, one end of the binoculars versus the audience is looking from the other end.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_03]: which, which, you know, it's a different perspective too because we talk about that whereas like if we don't think we had like a great night, you know, on stage, we tend to sell a ton of merch.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_03]: So that perspective doesn't necessarily translate.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_03]: So like, you know, what all the audiences like, oh, they were singing or playing with passion.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_03]: Like, no, we were screwing up and making fun of each other.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_03]: But, you know, it's different, but I know I love, I love looking at people.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_03]: from that vantage point.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_03]: And then I especially love when they realize that I am looking at them, because that always takes a second.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_03]: I like looking like eight people deep in and you start kind of staring somebody down.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_03]: And they don't notice right away.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_03]: There's like, oh, they're probably just looking.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_03]: at the collective hole.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_03]: They're not really looking at me.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_03]: And then you kind of start mimicking what they're doing.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: Like, if they're doing one of these, it's like, oh, hey, it's like, and once they realized, oh, wait, they're looking at me.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's it makes my day because, you know, it's like, aha, I am looking at you.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_03]: I see all.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Or the first time, I think that happened.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: It was a, it was a Pearl Jam show and, and it was the same thing.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it was Ed, you know, and, and looking over.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember like being in it and the eyes lock and I did the whole thing like,
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, I wasn't looking at you.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I was embarrassed or something, you know.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, oh, I just got called out by Eddie Vetter.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_03]: The eyeballs.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm sure he has that effect on many people.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Do you see weird stuff at the same time?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_03]: I've seen people get into random arguments sometimes.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_03]: I'll just hang out there for the duration.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_03]: You guys are right.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_03]: You know, seen people fight.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_03]: I saw a couple illegally making
- 15:26[SPEAKER_03]: love with each other on the barrier.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_03]: This was years ago at a festival.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's like you say it's all sorts of old stuff.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_03]: But it's, but it's interesting.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_03]: It's great people watching because, you know, at these rock shows, there's all walks of life.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_03]: And everybody's there for, you know, some people dress up, some people don't, some people want to not be noticed, some people want to be noticed, some people bring signs.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, so it's just, it's fun to just kind of go around the room and
- 15:54[SPEAKER_03]: For example, there was a kid that came to a couple of our shows and every single show, he would dress up like some Marvel characters.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_03]: So it was like Spider-Man, the one night Captain America.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, it's a lot of fun.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: And it brings me joy knowing that, you know, I don't know, your people are making the concert their own in that way.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's Kyle.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, I'd mentioned that in those moments, you'd post that video of the two ladies singing, watch out.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: And that song, okay, we talked about some fury, that's some fury and that song.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like you wake up in the morning, and what happened?
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: Because as you're saying, so much of this record was written in real time, one of the great Dave Cobb practices, which by the way, I don't think we've mentioned Dave, a huge fan of Dave.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: But like so I'm thinking like whatever is going on in that song is must have been whatever was happening to you at that day.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_03]: It let currently.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, this is this is one of those pep talk songs, but the funniest thing about that chorus is that that wasn't the original chorus.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_03]: We had a whole other situation for that.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_03]: And then it was just kind of a way my had it about four in the morning.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_03]: Um, that I recorded it.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_03]: It was, it was just going to be an outro that watch out that pictures out for blood.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_03]: Just so I just had it as an outro and ended up showing it to everybody that the next day and Dave's like, Oh, dude, we got a rethink this.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_03]: That's the chorus like screw this other part that we've been like locked in on for
- 17:35[SPEAKER_03]: for days.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_03]: So it was just, it was interesting, you know, great, great guidance, you know, just the simplicity of it kind of threw me for a loop.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, a lot of screaming, a lot of anger.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_03]: You got to put it somewhere.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I consider myself a fairly pleasant person.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_03]: But I remember it always reminds me of, so when I first started
- 17:59[SPEAKER_03]: really writing songs, you know, as a, you know, as a point, you know, every day.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_03]: My dad, it got a little too loud for the house.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_03]: So my dad carved out a space for me and his garage, you know, and I had like this four track task him, a set recorder that I was like recording songs on.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, there would be these moments that he would kind of come in from his end of the garage.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_03]: You're like, hey, are you okay?
- 18:25[SPEAKER_03]: Like, yeah, what?
- 18:26[SPEAKER_03]: I am now, you know, it's like you got to put it somewhere.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I think that was the beauty of making this record, too, is that like, every day was, okay, how are you feeling?
- 18:36[SPEAKER_03]: What's going on?
- 18:37[SPEAKER_03]: What do you want to tackle today?
- 18:41[SPEAKER_03]: And so just having that kind of freedom to kind of sit in your feelings and not be rehashing old ideas that if you had a month ago and trying to reignite the spark in those, it was created to be able to capture those moments.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: And especially, you use the line earlier, and artists will say that every time every artist is kind of the snapshot or whatever.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: But this is when you do it this way, that's as close as you can get to that snapshot.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: But it's also such a big trustful.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: Don't bring in any riffs.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: Don't bring in any lyrics.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: you know, this is I talk every now and then about how I always say my favorite albums are the sophomore records because the old line you've got all of your life to write your debut now what if you got and that's like a backup against the wall moment you know or so like it feels like it would be kind of something like akin to that
- 19:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I think that, I mean, traditionally, if I'm like really looking kind of down the, you know, the, the, the path of the journey that we've been on as a band, I can probably mark that every time that we back are so, you know,
- 19:47[SPEAKER_03]: are backed into a corner, as you say, and make ourselves uncomfortable, truly.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_03]: That's when the good stuff starts happening.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_03]: It's when you have so much time to overthink everything.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_03]: And then all of a sudden, everybody's opinions kind of come in and then it just too many cooks in the kitchen and then you end up with something that kind of flatlined and that couldn't have been something else.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_03]: Whereas when I listen to this album, I can hear us
- 20:16[SPEAKER_03]: Trying it still was something to prove, you know, like trying to like, okay, like we're we have to make this happen, you know, we don't have a choice in the matter.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_03]: We're jumping off the cliff and hope we pecked our parachutes right, you know, are there parachutes, you know, it's like did we bring them at you know,
- 20:32[SPEAKER_03]: So it's interesting and it was really inspiring doing it with Dave Cobb this way to the point that we ended up, you know, just in our house, you know, building a studio, you know, we had to have a board down there and we said, well, why are we making demos now at this point if this has been like, you know, we've survived through this.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_03]: Why don't we just do this from now on?
- 20:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we're excited about getting off the road at some, well, they probably won't be till the end of the year, but, you know, and getting in and kind of trying to do it again, you know.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: Jim, what happens?
- 21:06[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and I want to bring up another song, too, because I'm going to project a little bit here when I say darkness always wins.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: At what point do you realize that you've written one of the greatest all-time classics?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you're so sweet.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_03]: That was the first one.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_03]: That was the first one.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_03]: We went in just to kind of test the waters with Dave Cobb in Savannah, Jordan in his house studio.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_03]: And that was like.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_03]: That was the the day that we like we cut you know we coming with our bag of tricks you know Joe's about riffs for days I have my notebooks he's like oh no I'm not listening to any of that like we're not doing that like okay so well what what do you have today and literally the last thing that I had written down in my notebook book from before we got on the plane to come and see Dave Cobb
- 21:58[SPEAKER_03]: was just the phrase, darkness always wins.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_03]: My guitar player, Joe, and I were sitting out in our porch and kind of frustrated with the world and we're like, why does evil always prevail?
- 22:09[SPEAKER_03]: Why did the good ones go first?
- 22:11[SPEAKER_03]: That kind of discussion.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_03]: And I think it was Joe, it's like, why does the darkness always win?
- 22:15[SPEAKER_03]: Man, I'm like, oh, I like that right it down.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_03]: And so like armed with the only thing that you have like Dave, what do you think about that?
- 22:20[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I love that title, let's go.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, like everything might, let's do this.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_03]: So, ended up
- 22:27[SPEAKER_03]: sitting at the piano for the first half of this and then our do is on the kid and we just started doing it and it's really funny too because I do listen to that particular track and and you know you can hear like the fear in it of just like okay we got to like
- 22:43[SPEAKER_03]: We got to impress this guy.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_03]: Like we can do this.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_03]: This is great.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_03]: You know, let's like, I don't know what we're doing.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_03]: But we're going to accomplish it.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's the first time I ever heard that song.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: I had that thought is like, have I been singing this song for twenty years?
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it really does.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's always a thing about you have your songs, your favorite songs, you know, like there's magic in that song.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever that is.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're in the song, if you're the person wrote the song, you see how the sausage was made.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, no, but there's magic in that song in the end of it.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: However, that happens.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's
- 23:21[SPEAKER_03]: We have so many like out of body experiences when that stuff happens, too, because like once because when you're in it, it does seem like chaos, where it's like, okay, we're just trying to put some stuff together, see what sticks, whatever.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_03]: And then when you when it's finished and you can kind of listen to it in its entirety, it's almost like this.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_03]: Wow, look at look at that.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_03]: That's that it's almost like the music told us what to do not the other way around because you don't feel like you can take credit through that.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like, wow, look at that.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_03]: That's amazing.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_03]: You know, start off with a finger painting and and now it's actually something I want to hang on the wall, you know,
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like there are certain words, I think that just does a lot of the heavy lifting.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes, I don't know if you have those words, like in that one, it's not even one of the main words, but when you use the word sin, and I was thinking about how much heavy lifting a word like sin does, like when Nick Cave uses sin.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: And how it's like, it's almost like, thank goodness that one's there because that one's gonna take this so much further.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's gonna take a little bit of the weight off.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_03]: I love Nick Cave.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: so much.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: I see you have the wild gods, you know, Al-Mart and the back there.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_03]: He is so incredibly interesting and, uh, lyrically, I think he's one of the the best of all time, you know, and there's something so otherworldly and, but so incredibly genuine.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_03]: you know it's like it's really hard to like get that combination with certain people either it's not either it feels like oh too much you know like they definitely had help with all that or it feels too like up to personal that there's a there's this amazing I don't know brand balance that he he mastered long ago
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: rare ones in a lifetime artists and stuff like that, you know, how they come along.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: And you all are up there.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, that's this record.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's so, so good.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so looking forward to hearing these songs live in person myself on the tour later on.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_03]: So, yes.
