Transcript
- 0:01Welcome to the Payment Share podcast live here at MPE Today
- 0:06And this morning, our first interview of today.
- 0:08We are joined by Lincoln Dundas, VP of Partnerships and
- 0:12Enablement at Opti. Thanks for joining us, Lincoln.
- 0:14Tell more about yourself and Opti.
- 0:17Yeah. So I'm yeah, Link and at Opti
- 0:19where I guess like a white label payment infrastructure, a layer
- 0:25in that sense. So we've integrated over 150
- 0:28payment brands into our stack and then we provide that single
- 0:32API to banks, orchestrators, gateways, schemes all across the
- 0:36world so that then they can provide that downstream to their
- 0:39clients. Nice.
- 0:40And look, in the payments world, we talk about fragmentation.
- 0:45What? What is Fragmentation?
- 0:46And what's? Driving it because is it a
- 0:48buzzword? Or actually, is there some
- 0:51thought behind the word itself? So if you think about it, what
- 0:54like 10 to 15 years ago we had the explosion of digital wallets
- 1:02moving into then BNPL and now account to account crypto stable
- 1:08coins. In that sense, it's driven by
- 1:11what we see as less of a dependency on a game rail, less
- 1:18of a cost of acceptance for them, then also on a consumer
- 1:22demand. So our role that we say in that
- 1:25sense is trying to allow our clients to as opposed to seeing
- 1:28it as a problem for them. How do they harness that to be
- 1:34able to provide that to their clients.
- 1:35So if they want to be able to expand to, you know, Europe, go
- 1:40from here to the States, they can without having to go, right.
- 1:44Do I need to have the right mix of whatever specific payment
- 1:47type it might be? When it comes to talking about
- 1:50payment methods, is it being driven by education from payment
- 1:53companies or is it merchants driving themselves?
- 1:56Yeah, sorry. So, yeah, So from a merchant
- 1:58point of view, obviously they want to be able to, I guess,
- 2:00adopt what a new consumer demographic is in that sense.
- 2:06So if they're selling something which has got a high AOV, then
- 2:10they want to be able to switch on Scala pay after pay client or
- 2:17whatever it might be. And then with the government
- 2:20mandated LPMS with being fee fee free.
- 2:24So some countries like Greece have to have that for their
- 2:28clients. I'm going to we talk about
- 2:31having the right mix of pay methods as you mentioned in in
- 2:34each country. Why is it specialized pay
- 2:37methods over LPMS or Apms? Yeah.
- 2:40So if we think about that, that what 4 billion people in the
- 2:45world don't have access to cards.
- 2:47So the alternative in that sense is actually what the norm would
- 2:52be say in some parts of the world where it's telcos that
- 2:56their own the digital wallet there.
- 2:59They're not funding source is not a bank, is not a bank
- 3:02account. Funding source is not a card.
- 3:04So if that's 90% of what the population uses to then check
- 3:09out, that's not what the old alternative is.
- 3:12That's the norm. Yeah.
- 3:13So from our point of view, you know, trying to then integrate
- 3:17that, that would be a specialised payment type.
- 3:21So from our point of view, integrating that across the
- 3:25world is that that I guess the differentiation between what is
- 3:29the norm or what is the perceived norm in this part of
- 3:32the world to then having I guess what the norm is for someone
- 3:36else on the other side of the world.
- 3:37And I've seen that the impact then for merchants is increased
- 3:40basket 100%, right and then increased conversion.
- 3:42What's the? Back of that, the way that I see
- 3:44it is that it's not necessarily about just trying to have more
- 3:46payment types on the on the check out flow.
- 3:51It's allowing more actual consumers to pay.
- 3:55OK, It's not always about just that, well, I need to have 10
- 3:57different ways to pay on my check out flow.
- 3:59It's I know the fact there's a consumer demographic that sits
- 4:03behind why I'm switch that on. I think sometimes quite
- 4:06overwhelming as a consumer, right?
- 4:08You see all these different. Payments, yeah.
- 4:10Tell me a little bit more about kind of your developments from
- 4:12an OPTI perspective in the world of like crypto and stablecoin,
- 4:15where's where's that come from an OPTI perspective?
- 4:17So we've been supporting I guess crypto based payments for about
- 4:212 1/2 years now. So for that like very specific
- 4:25value exchange format that that it is.
- 4:28And I think the legitimization of it by certain like central
- 4:32bank digital currencies in that sense also PayPal stablecoin,
- 4:41that's been a lot of the adoption that that we've seen.
- 4:43And then having the inbound request, which is quite rare,
- 4:46right? So having on the retail and
- 4:49professional services side. So for sole traders and whatnot
- 4:55having their invoices paid, they're requesting to have
- 4:58crypto and stablecoin for that, using it as crossbow a border.
- 5:04And tell me a little bit more on kind of Opti's view on AI.
- 5:08It's going to probably be something a lot of people talk
- 5:10about over 44 hours as they have done for the last couple of
- 5:12years. Where does Opti sit in in their
- 5:14thoughts on that? So we've we're probably
- 5:17utilizing a few AI driven initiatives within our brand and
- 5:22that you know and that goes across the board from how we
- 5:25integrate things, how we provide what that I guess seamless
- 5:28integration experience is both from a consumer view when
- 5:32they're going to use the merchants checkout flow on who
- 5:36the gateway provider is that we provide that downstream to.
- 5:39So it's not necessarily about us providing I guess what that
- 5:44consumer experience is at the core of what of what we do, but
- 5:48it's that merchant being able to have that interoperability for
- 5:54it. So that's I guess what we're
- 5:56trying to make it smooth and seamless.
- 5:59And then if we can adapt and scale its speed, we're going to
- 6:03be able to do that as well. Perfect.
- 6:04And when I talk about open banking sort of big people, we
- 6:07talk about wallet based and wallet based payments.
- 6:10What are your thoughts on wallet based payments?
- 6:11Wallet based payments right now? Well, I think as I was saying
- 6:15before, I think that that over 50% of e-commerce across the
- 6:18globe is processed on an APM and SPM as as I was saying before.
- 6:24So on the wallet base and what if you want to differentiate it
- 6:27between Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Afterpay, in my view,
- 6:32they kind of all sit in that kind of same realm.
- 6:35The ability for that is much more of a liability shift moving
- 6:41away from what the other issuer or the acquirer would deem as I
- 6:47guess risk. So the flexibility for those
- 6:52payment types for merchant demographics being like high
- 6:56risk, but that's where we want to be able to see, I guess more
- 6:59of that growth and that continued growth in that sense.
- 7:02Perfect and day one MPE. Yep, Yep.
- 7:05Tell me. More about what What do you love
- 7:07about MPE? So I think this is my third year
- 7:09here and I'll continue to come back for sure.
- 7:12So I think the reason that I like it so much is that it's
- 7:16intimate. It's all the right brands that
- 7:18that you want. It's the right people from those
- 7:21brands. And of course it's like, you
- 7:23know, not a large event in that sense.
- 7:25You get to see everyone again and again.
- 7:28It's it's probably the best innovative conversations that
- 7:32that I get to have each year, I think.
- 7:34It's good feedback and last part shelf of shame.
- 7:37Tell us what frustrates you in the payments world.
- 7:40So specifically from my point of view is legacy brands that that
- 7:46are kind of slow to modernize what their infrastructure stack
- 7:49is. So there's probably a lot of, I
- 7:53don't know, maybe acquirers out there who won't like what I'm
- 7:55what I just said, but that's our role to try to help in that
- 7:58sense. So yeah, don't be afraid of I
- 8:01guess what's coming down the pipe and what your clients are
- 8:05asking you for. There's always help to be able
- 8:06to get it done. Yeah, I think it's a really good
- 8:08point, being open to knowing that you've got legacy stack
- 8:10100% and actually doing something about it, right?
- 8:12Yeah, amazing. Thank you so much for your time.
- 8:15Have a great show.
