- 1:07it end this week, The War Dog Great Detectives dot net. Well,
- 1:12now it's time for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Morlow. The Long
- 1:18Rope. It was a man with a bad hut, a telephone number scribble,
- 1:22and a cash register receipt and the cups on the other side of town.
- 1:25But I couldn't see the connection between them until I realized that they were
- 1:29all tied together by the same long rope. Worth thirty thousand dollars from the
- 1:36pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous
- 1:40character as CBS presents The Adventures of Philip Morlow and now with Gerald Moore starred
- 1:57as Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story, The Long Rope.
- 2:13I'd finally wound up a cur case in which I'd been kicked around, disillusioned
- 2:16and short changed. And in my book, a routine like that calls for
- 2:21relaxation. So I'd spent the morning sleeping, in the afternoon in a Turkish
- 2:24bath, being worked over on the table by Nick Tagalakas, a non talking
- 2:30messur who untied knots and more muscles than I thought I had. He was
- 2:34trying to tear loose my achilles tendon. When the phone rang, it was
- 2:38for me. Nick wouldn't let me up, so I took it lying down.
- 2:43Yeah, marlow speaking, my name is, shouldn't Evanita, mister Marlowe.
- 2:46I've tried all afternoon to reach you. Oh Nick, what can I
- 2:51do for you? Mister Vanette. I've already made your reservation with American Airlines.
- 2:55You're leaving on the ten o'clock plane tonight, and you're taking with you
- 2:59or shut up pearls for a certain buyer in Chicago. Wait a minute,
- 3:01mister Vannetta, Maybe I can, oh maybe, marlow I've checked early on
- 3:06you and find you entirely qualified, which is important because the pearls are perfectly
- 3:10matched set in a rope value that about thirty thousand dollars. The buyer wants
- 3:15them, and I made up my mind just this morning to sell. The
- 3:17proceeds will go to my niece. Lucky girl. Indeed she is, particularly
- 3:22since I have no respect for her as a woman. She presumes to be
- 3:25a sculptress of all things, but she's lonely there. I'm selling the pearl
- 3:30simply because I know she would and I can get more for him. Yeah,
- 3:35ooh, hey, Nick, wait a minute, while the hurry,
- 3:37mister Vannette. First, the buyer is leaving Chicago tomorrow. Second, my
- 3:42heart may fail me at any moment. That's a hurry, mister Marlall I
- 3:45see. Well, I'll take the job conditionally. But suppose I come out
- 3:49and talk with you. Telephones are deceptive. Hey, well, come to
- 3:52seventy two forty one atoms just below Western. I'll expect you in an hour.
- 3:55That's it. Shot. Side door will be open, so let yourself
- 3:59in. Sounds like you're alone out there. I am. I just fired
- 4:01my nurse, A misdrew and a stupid a woman as the earth whatever hurts
- 4:06back were I shouldn't get excited about it. I've engaged in new one.
- 4:11Do here at five point thirty. But who will, no doubt be late?
- 4:14So as I say, Marlow, when you get here, just let
- 4:15yourself in. Goodbye bye. I'll make you better. Hurry it up.
- 4:19I got to see a man about a rope worth thirty grand Yeah, yeah,
- 4:25that's right, a rope worth thirty thousand dollars. Banetta's place on Adams
- 4:34was a big, fancy and dirty gray place. Forty years ago. It
- 4:38had been a proud, expensive house, but now it's squatted at the back
- 4:42end of a rundown yard like a bitter old man too tired to move.
- 4:46I found the side door unlocked, and one in the hallway was dusky and
- 4:49had the odor of moldy wool. I called Vanetta's name, but got no
- 4:53answer, so I poked on him until I heard the snapping of an open
- 4:57fire. It came from the library. A big chair was drawn up in
- 5:00front of the fireplace, and there Vanetta sat, his chin sunk deep in
- 5:04his chest and his eyes closed. I coughed, but he didn't hear me,
- 5:09so I stepped close and shook him gently by the shoulder. All it
- 5:14took was a gentle shake. He sagged forward and poured out of the chair
- 5:17like stiff syrup. Mister Vanetta was dead. I started for the phone to
- 5:26report the body, but then I heard gravel crunch in the driveway. Someone
- 5:30else was coming in that side door, so I stepped out into the hall
- 5:33and waited. Mister Vannetta, it's oh, who are you, Philip Mallow?
- 5:42Who are you? Steve Temple? I'm mister Vanetta's business agent. You're
- 5:46on business now, Yes, I am. It's all the same to you.
- 5:48I came to see mister Vanetta regarding some pearls, so if you're excuse
- 5:53him. Yeah, the pearls can wait. Their own is dead, so
- 5:59it final. He happened. You're taking the news very well, Temple.
- 6:02I've been expecting it every day for five years. You found him, I
- 6:09suppose, m hm. We had an appointment at six. He wanted me
- 6:12to fly his pearls to Chicago. Hey, what are you staring at him?
- 6:15Ahry, there's a bottle of medicine here? What about it? For
- 6:19years, he's kept this stuff beside him in case of an attack. Yet
- 6:24when he actually needed it, it was over here on the sideboard, out
- 6:28of his reach. Ironic, isn't it very He fired miss drew his old
- 6:32nurse today and didn't expect the new until five point thirty? Said he happen
- 6:36to know her name? No one? You mean he's engaged a new nurse.
- 6:40That's right, she's now late already. Yeah, well for once that
- 6:45doesn't matter to mister Vanetta. Say Temple, are you acquainted with his niece
- 6:48Vivian Russell. Of course, she's a sculptress. There's a studio out on
- 6:54Fountain near Bronson. I believe she was to get the proceeds from the pearls.
- 6:58I assume that nothing was ever said. She's his only heir. Why
- 7:02would those pearls be now? He kept them in the wall safe behind that
- 7:05picture there, consistently against my advice. Yeah, sure, opens with a
- 7:12key. What would that be? And he carried it with him on he's
- 7:15watch chain. Why what are you going to do and take a look at
- 7:17the pearls and then have him impounded? Yeah, this must be the key.
- 7:21Let's open it up. He's there. That velvet case as big as
- 7:29an overnight bag. Must be some string of beads. It is Marlowe.
- 7:31He here, let me open it there right, it's nothing but tissie paper.
- 7:42Yeah, it's not too surprising. While Temple called the police and tried
- 7:49to keep the details straight on a natural death and an unnatural theft, I
- 7:54went over the room again with a new viewpoint. All it turned up without
- 7:58an easy explanation, was one a cash register receipt for a dollar thirty four
- 8:01with the phone number Republic two eight oh nine penciled on the back, and
- 8:05to the peculiar position of mister Vannetta's medicine bottle, which Temple had already noticed.
- 8:11I dropped the receipt in my pocket and told Temple to wait for the
- 8:13law. He gave me his home address and phone numb and I promised to
- 8:16check in with him later and left. The first stop was a phone booth,
- 8:20where I dug into the nurses registries and hit pay dirt on the fourth
- 8:22call Miss Drew. Yes, we have a Miss Drew. Is she the
- 8:26one to work for mister Sidney Vnetta? But it was fired this afternoon,
- 8:28that's his opinion, actually, Miss Drew, quick, all right, have
- 8:31it your way. Where can I get in touch with her. She's right
- 8:33here where she's been since three o'clock this afternoon. What is the nature of
- 8:37your business, sir? Never mind, you've already answered my question. But
- 8:41look, mister Vannetta hired another nurse to replace Miss Drew. Is the new
- 8:45girl one of yours? Absolutely not, Mister Vannetta will never get another nurse
- 8:48from this registry or from any other that I know of. It's all right.
- 8:52He's utterly impossible to please in any way, and we're through trying.
- 8:54Goodbye. Miss Drew was in the clear. Vnetta began to focus as a
- 9:03pretty odd Johnny. But I was still trying to figure why the new nurse
- 9:07hadn't shown up. When I reached for a cigarette and brought out the cash
- 9:09Rogers to receipt with the phone number on the back, so I tried it
- 9:13Republic two eight oh nine. It rang, but nothing happened. I got
- 9:18in my car then and drove up the Hollywood and Now Fountain the Bronson where
- 9:22the only Vanetta Air, Miss Vivian Russell, had a studio. It was
- 9:26a converted double garage with a lot of north windows, so her new close
- 9:30to the ground. Hudson sat outside in the driveway, the adjoining four room
- 9:33apartment looked cozy enough if you liked wading through chunks of marble and eating off
- 9:39of last week's newspaper. Yeah, I was braced for a dowdy Amazon with
- 9:43broken fingernails as I rang the bell. That's why the dainty one hundred and
- 9:48eighteen pounds of taboo scent it Bland, who was clad in ten chartreuse yards
- 9:54of whispering silk cut like lounging pajamas, caught me as flat footed as a
- 9:58duck when she opened the door. Hi, did you want something? Eh?
- 10:07Yes, yeah, My name is Marlow. I'd like to speak to
- 10:11miss Vivian Russell. You are so go ahead and enjoy yourself, Marla,
- 10:16May I come and sign? I have some bad news, Miss Russell?
- 10:20Oh, oh sure, come on in now. Shall I sit down or
- 10:24just hang on to something suit yourself. Your uncle, mister Vannetta died this
- 10:28afternoon. Oh, his heart finally gave up to it. Yeah, but
- 10:33you shouldn't go all the pieces like that, Vivian. No way. He
- 10:37meant nothing to me, but I'm glad his suffering is over. The pearls
- 10:39are missing too well. Really what happened to them? They was stolen?
- 10:43And don't tell me that means nothing to you because you're getting the money thirty
- 10:46thousand bucks worth? What Uncle Sidney intended to give me the money from those
- 10:50pearls? How do you know that? I'm a private detective. He told
- 10:54me he was my client. Oh then you're out of a job. So
- 10:56how would you like to work for me? Marlo? Serious? Now I
- 11:00want those pearls back, you know, for twenty five a day in expenses.
- 11:03It's a deal. Now you tell me something. Who did your uncle
- 11:07hire today to replace miss Drew the nurse? Why? I didn't even know
- 11:09Miss Drew had been fired? How did you know she didn't quit with Uncle
- 11:13Sidney? Try me again, Republic two eight h nine. That doesn't mean
- 11:18a thing, you know, Marlow, you've got an awfully good head.
- 11:24Are you speaking as a sculptress or just an ordinary chislow? And what is
- 11:28that crack supposed to mean? You didn't know you were getting the money legally
- 11:31you might have taken the pros yourself. Oh stop it, Marlow, Okay,
- 11:33client, Well I'll run along. I've got work to do, all
- 11:35right, But don't forget that all work and no play makes for a dull
- 11:39companion. Yes, and it also makes twenty five bucks a day. I'll
- 11:43be seeing you all the way down Sunset to Vine Street. I kept telling
- 11:50myself a bucks a buck regardless, but the idea that I'd been grabbed at
- 11:54stayed with me. Lavian and Russell had plenty of motive. Is a dry
- 11:58Land pearl diver, and if that's true, she'd need a patsy just to
- 12:01keep her abreast of the situation. I turned north on Vine and twisted up
- 12:07Beach would drive the two thousand and number Steve Temple had given me. He
- 12:09had had two hours of playing twenty questions policeman style, and I figured it
- 12:13was time to check his score. Also, Temple was the man to fill
- 12:16in a few blanks and my new client for me. His place was dark,
- 12:20but I got out anyway and started up the walk to his door.
- 12:24I'd gone about a dozen steps into a tunnel of overhanging shrubs when I heard
- 12:26it, hey you. I turned as a man stepped out on the walk
- 12:31and came toward me slowly. He was tall, wiry, with a thin,
- 12:35arrogant face that sneered out from under an expanse of forehead big enough for
- 12:37three sets of eyebrows, all shaggy. We're gonna have a talk, mister.
- 12:43Hey, you're not Temple. Now, we both know that I'm a
- 12:46friend of his. What do you want with Temple. We've got a message
- 12:48for him, but it's personal. Oh from like I say, it's personal,
- 12:50mister, I'll be back later. Tell here I said I'm a friend
- 12:54of Temples. If you got a message for him, I'll see that he
- 12:56gets it. Okay, Then tell him that some of his friends are too
- 13:01blasted nose. The guy with the forehead had a great left jab and a
- 13:09pair of hurdless legs, and by the time I untangled myself from the brush
- 13:11and got out on a walk again, he was gone. I know it
- 13:16was a waste of time, but I tried Temple's dog bell twice before I
- 13:18went back to my car. Nothing made sense except that somebody who knew was
- 13:22way around its tolen a long rope of pearls, and somewhere in the city
- 13:26was a nurse who hadn't shown up on a new job. Beyond that,
- 13:28it was all question marks. I drove down to the filling station on the
- 13:33corner and went inside of the phone. I started to call police headquarters,
- 13:35but instead dropped the nickelin and dialed Republic two eight oh nine. Again just
- 13:41on a hunch, Tourny Barr speaking Ebara. I didn't die, Lui Barra,
- 13:52this is Malow. Well you got me anyway. I listen, Phill,
- 13:54I hear you're on that of another case. Yeah, if it'll help,
- 13:58be any of the car and it says definitely out of a heart attack,
- 14:00no homicide involved. Thanks so, Sennant. Hey, but look where
- 14:03are you now? And a flat on the corner of the Union of fifty
- 14:05ninth Street, Why well is that phone number there Republic to wait on nin
- 14:09That's a great piece of deduction. You just called it. Hey, Bora,
- 14:11listen, I found that number Vanette's place this afternoon. What's going on
- 14:15down there? Girl here named Betty Larson. Yeah, she's a nurse,
- 14:18right, No wrong, phil she's a corpse. Before that, she was
- 14:20a waitress, just a waitress. Somebody came to a door and killed if
- 14:24an no apparent reason whatsoever. In just a moment, we will return to
- 14:37the second act of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. But first Jack Benny will
- 14:43be along on CBS tomorrow night with one of his funniest shows ever, in
- 14:46addition to his regular hecklers Dennis Don, Phil Mary and Rochester, Claudette,
- 14:50Colbert and Vincent Price will pay a call on Jack, And with Don Wilson
- 14:56still wanting to raise and pay, and with Jack still trying to starve him
- 14:58and the talk terms, you're sure to find the situations full of the hilarity
- 15:03and fast moving fun that have made CBS's Jack Benny Show the top rating comedy
- 15:07of all Yes, remember CBS also means Catch Benny Sundays. Now, with
- 15:15our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and
- 15:18Tonight's story, The Long Rope. It was forty minutes of fixed stop and
- 15:31go traffic from the time I quit talking to we Bora until I pulled up
- 15:35near the four stories of faded Sagging tenement on the corner of Union in fifty
- 15:39ninth. But even then, the crazy question that had been weaving in and
- 15:43out of my mind like a two am drunk looking for the way to go
- 15:45home was still with me. Why was the telephone number Republic two eight oh
- 15:48nine bracketed by a couple of dead people who, as far as I coulde,
- 15:52should have had nothing to do with each other in the first place.
- 15:56Right there, for the tenth time running, I drew a complete and unabridged
- 15:58blank. But a minute later, when I climbed out of my coop and
- 16:02over the bumpers of the half dozen squad cars that were jammed into the narrow
- 16:06street like so many toyotos that a kid had forgotten about, I quit asking
- 16:10myself riddles and started looking for Detective lieutenanty Barr, a quiet man who always
- 16:15preferred fact to fancy. I found him in a cheap but clean, uniform
- 16:18crowded room on the second floor, standing a few feet away from the body
- 16:22of Betty Lawson, a girl and a bathrobe who had once been something pretty
- 16:26in her early twenties. Well Phil the car, and that says she was
- 16:29shot twice in the chest at close range. Died instantly that way she fell.
- 16:33Lieutenant there any of the door, Yeah, it looks like she'd just
- 16:34gotten home and into a robe and summoned she didn't know knocked on the door.
- 16:37Safety chain was still on when we got here, and the windows leading
- 16:41no place. Those chains led a door open just wide enough for the barrel
- 16:44of a gun, is that it? Yeah? But how does all this
- 16:45add with those missing pearls and the rest of that business over on items,
- 16:48Marlotte? Not like two and two, believe me so, Fari Bar.
- 16:52The only question is the telephone numbers. Tell me where did this Betty Lowson
- 16:56work? Well, we haven't gotten that for her yet so long. Right
- 17:02now, we only know that she was a waitress who stayed here with a
- 17:03brother who was some kind of a student. They got along pretty well together.
- 17:07She was single too, lived here since Oh wait a minute, Arney
- 17:12Barr. Oh yeah, mooney, Ryan's cafe. Eh, Ryan himself runs
- 17:18it. Okay, I'll check it personally, right hey, is that what
- 17:23she worked to borrow? Ryan's cafe? But it's funny, Phil, she
- 17:26lived here since early nineteen forty seven the moon, he tells me. She
- 17:30worked that twenty four hour hash house just as long. Yet it's way over
- 17:33on the other side of town and Western Western and Wherrybarra. The twenty three
- 17:37hundred block should be near Washington, Washington, which is only one block from
- 17:41Adams, and that starts to close the big circle. What do you mean,
- 17:44Marlo, Well, that The Vanetta Place is on Adams near Western looky
- 17:47Barra. How about letting me huddle over a cup of Ryan's coffee before the
- 17:49last steps in high I gotta hunt. You want to check Phil, Yeah,
- 17:52yeah, that in a cash register receipt? What do you say?
- 17:56But play a close fellow. Ryan probably doesn't know about this yet, unless,
- 18:00of course, he squeezed the trigger. Go buy e Bara. There
- 18:11was a half hour getting over to Ryan's cafe on Weston, which turned out
- 18:14to be a lot of steamed over plate glass spragging about a forty cent hot
- 18:18roast beef sandwich and two foot high white shark letters. And inside the moteeth
- 18:22was the same everything that mister Ryan's soul was a bargain. I slid onto
- 18:26a shaky stool opposite a cash customer who was something dirty in a torn overcoat,
- 18:32very deep in a handicap of sheet and coffee. He looked up one
- 18:36and scrinned, no teeth at me, then hollowed for Ryan in the kitchen,
- 18:38who said that he only had two hands and would be out in a
- 18:41minute. But before those sixty seconds ran out, I looked around and over
- 18:47in a corner and a collection of trash piled next to a broom, I
- 18:49saw a very welcome piece of paper. It was a brother of the cash
- 18:53register receipt that I'd found on Sidney Vnetta's desk, a one that had tied
- 18:57Betty Lawson's murder onder the rope of pearls. I turned back to the counter
- 19:03just as Ryan started toward me. He was a little bigger and a little
- 19:06better looking than the average ape, and on his right arm had the thick
- 19:10course black hair that was long enough to braid. There was a tattoo of
- 19:12a dancing girl who if Ryan ever shaved about his wrists would freeze to death.
- 19:18Coffee, Yeah, and a little information. You know Sidney Vanetta?
- 19:23Ryan at scooboard with a bump tickle over on Adams. Yeah, I know
- 19:27him. Why it's time on earth for one thing? He's dead, too
- 19:33bad. Should have taken it easier. No pearls. What'd you say?
- 19:41Nothing? Ryan? Who brought that tray after the Vanetta place this afternoon?
- 19:47I did sure it wasn't Betty Lawson. I'm positive now of the girls that
- 19:51go near that place, but that it was hard to get along with.
- 19:53Now you tell me something, what are you mister news hound collection man of
- 19:57cop getting warmer. I'm a private detective named Marlow. I'm thrilled. Good
- 20:03night before I finish my coffee, before I throw you out. I don't
- 20:07like too many questions, not even easy ones, Huh like who murdered Betty
- 20:11Larson? Bet Betty's dead? Yeah, over in a flat on fifty ninth
- 20:17Street, shot twice with the thirty two when'd you last year? Ryan?
- 20:22A couple of hours ago? When she quit for the night? Marlo the
- 20:26CoP's got any idea? Who did it? I don't know right now.
- 20:30They're looking for a boyfriend. Crazy. Betty didn't have a boy outside of
- 20:33you, outside of me, So I'm going over to straighten them out.
- 20:36Now, Mitchie, Mitchie, get out here and take over. I gotta
- 20:41move fast now. You don't Ryan, Betty's dead, remember, Yeah,
- 20:45but whoever did it? Ain't. I don't try to stop me, Mallow,
- 20:47You'll get hurt. Look, Ryan, why don't you play smarten?
- 20:51Uh? What's he use? Go on and start running. You won't get
- 20:53very far. For the first time that night, I felt sure of what
- 21:03I was saying, because even as Ryan had squared himself away to play bounce,
- 21:07the private detective. I suddenly noticed a friendly face working hard over a
- 21:11stale doughnut. At the far end of the counter was lieutenanty Barrow, and
- 21:15when Ryan tossed his apron aside, grabbed his coat and slammed out the front
- 21:18door, Ibarra turned and nodded at the short man nearby, who was idly
- 21:23picking his teeth for the end of a book of matches. At that the
- 21:26man dropped the matches into his pocket and left. Then he Borro moved over
- 21:30to me. Didn't mean to cry to hear, Phil, but after you
- 21:33left, we found out that Ryan and Betty Larson needed to see quite a
- 21:37bit of each other. Unapologize, he Borrow probably would have cost me a
- 21:40couple of front teeth if I had noticed you. Yeah, please here we
- 21:45barn. I don't fel I got to move now, you see. I
- 21:47don't think Ryan did this and went toll Mooney to follow him, but not
- 21:49to pick him up. The chancells are good that Ryan's heating straight for Betty's
- 21:52apartment. The demand of the police find out who killed his girl. So
- 21:56I'm going the other way to Ryan's house and maybe another woman, this jealous
- 22:00one. But no rope of pearls. Oh, Marloe, I don't think
- 22:03so. Good night, now night, lieutenant, Well mitsy, how long
- 22:07have you worked here? A couple of days? But I don't know nothing
- 22:11about mister Ryan. I'm a married woman. And what do you think you're
- 22:15staring at? Mister? Maybe something wonderful? Mitzy tell me, baby,
- 22:21do you always wear that kind of a uniform when you're working here? Sure?
- 22:25Ryan says this girl should look neat and clean. It helps business.
- 22:27Anything wrong with that? Oh no, no, matter of fact, it
- 22:30might be just the lead. I'm after, what are you talking about?
- 22:33And if I'm right, baby, the rest of this case will be a
- 22:36cinch. So good night and thanks, You've been a big help, sweetheart.
- 22:44When I got back to the corner of Union in fifty ninth, I
- 22:45took the stairs up to Betty Larson's flat two at a time, crossed the
- 22:48fingers on both hands, and prayed that he borrowed was right about Ryan returning
- 22:52to his girl's place. When I stepped into the room a second later,
- 22:56I knew that I'd never doubt the good lieutenant again, because next to an
- 23:00open window and staring at it, nothing was Ryan himself. Numbed and red
- 23:03eyed. I asked him one question, and although his answer was only a
- 23:08couple of words mumbled between trembling lips, it was all I had to know.
- 23:12Now everything, Betty Larson's murder, the death of Anette, the guy
- 23:17with the forehead, and the missing pearls. The whole shebang was starting to
- 23:18fall together. Oh, come on, baby, be home. Please Hello
- 23:30Mallow, Vivian, Look, honey, I want you to do me a
- 23:33favor. Get hold of Steve Temple and meet me over at cheruncle's place on
- 23:36Adams as soon as possible. I need your help. Goodbye. Well,
- 23:48what took you so long? I understood you needed our help, and in
- 23:51a hurry at that I had quite a way to come. Temple. Is
- 23:53Vivian here? Yes, Mallo, Vivian's here, And that means that we
- 23:56can stop counting noses. Now. You need our help catch someone who stole
- 24:02once and murdered twice. Murdered twice, that's right now. It's my guest.
- 24:06Who ever stole that rope of pearls? Also move Vannetta's medicine out of
- 24:08reach when his heart started skipping beats? Can you prove that? No?
- 24:12No, I can't. But it doesn't matter really, because the guilty one
- 24:15also killed a party named Lawson. When you paid for one, Vivin,
- 24:18you paid for them all. I don't follow your Marlo. Who are you
- 24:22talking about? I'm not sure, but this much is certain. Vanetta called
- 24:25me at five. When I got here at six, he was already dead
- 24:27and the pearls were gone. I figured that whoever took the marged with him
- 24:32first, which makes that person one somebody who knew Vanetta, and two responsible
- 24:37for the old man's death. Then the new nurse couldn't possibly have been the
- 24:40one who stole the pearls. No, but the new nurse could have been
- 24:42the one who overheard everything while standing right here. Haven't you been able to
- 24:45find this nurseh Not yet, But sooner or later, Honey, I'm sure
- 24:49we'll catch up to him. Yep, nice temple, I said him.
- 24:53Nurse Lawson is a male with a lot of forehead and few ethics. The
- 24:57person you killed was a sister, Betty. It was a no mold temple.
- 25:02I'll be glad that I was forced to put holes in you temple,
- 25:03the one he's dole the rope of pearl. Yeah, but this nurse loss
- 25:07and I saw him do it, got in touch with him, right,
- 25:10Temple. It was filthy black man, but you were gonna stop by a
- 25:11filthy and murder and you almost did because somehow or other you got the right
- 25:15room in the right house on Union in fifty ninth, But the wrong party.
- 25:18Isn't that about it? Temple? Yes, Marlow, that's about it
- 25:23now, Marlow, you don't shoot me without going through Vivian. First.
- 25:26Dear Vivian, Sydney's precious niece was going to have the pearls all to herself.
- 25:33Marlow. It'll cost Via in her life if you do without that very
- 25:37much, Temple. Larsa, that's right, Joe lars forehead and all.
- 25:41Are you Temple step away from that girl or I'll tear you to pieces.
- 25:45Larsa, No, no, Now, we can still do business like you
- 25:48said in that note you sent me, I'll split shut up. You forget
- 25:52two things, Temple. First you tried to kill me, and second you
- 25:56did kill my sister. Now why didn't you run? Or are you afraid?
- 26:03Which is it? Come on, Temple talk, Hi, I'm afraid,
- 26:19well, I'm allo that just about warins things up, yep, Joe
- 26:22Lawson sent up for attempted extortion and Temple sent up for good. Say,
- 26:27Marlowe, when you called a while ago and said that you wanted Temple and
- 26:30me to help you, did you know then the Temple was the murderer?
- 26:33No, I didn't, Vivian. Then I only knew that whoever had killed
- 26:36Betty Lawson had mistaken her for the new nurse, and that the actual nurse
- 26:38was Betty's brother. Joe, where'd you get a hold of that film?
- 26:41But it started in Ryan's cafe Borah just after you left. I had nurses
- 26:45on the brain, I guess, And when I took a good look at
- 26:48the waitress there, I suddenly realized that her white uniform, white shoes,
- 26:51and white cap could easily confuse a guy like Temple who also had nurses on
- 26:56the brain. Well, I can see a killer making a mistake about it.
- 27:00Appearance is all right, But I still don't understand how it is that
- 27:03the telephone number of my uncle's nurse turned out to be Betty's apartment because a
- 27:07nurse did live there, Honey, Betty's brother was a medical student, part
- 27:10time male nurse, and full time bum. You see Ryan who brought food
- 27:15to Uncle Sidney knew that he needed a new nurse, and he sold him
- 27:18on the idea of Joe Lawson because he wanted his girlfriend's brother to have a
- 27:22job. Oh I get it, say, I know what I'm going to
- 27:26do with those pearls. Sold one to the highest bidding. Oh no,
- 27:29I'm going to break up that set. Break up the set. Yeah,
- 27:32I'd like very much to get a pair of earrings out of them, and
- 27:36for each of you a set of cufflinks. Good night, gentlemen. When
- 27:51Vivian got into a car aimed at toward a collection of chip rocks on Fountain
- 27:55near Bronson and waved goodbye, it was nearly three o'clock in the morning.
- 28:00After I said, so long do we borrow and started back to my apartment
- 28:04on Franklin. An idea hit me for the first time. A pearl is
- 28:10the result of the irritation of an oyster, a disease, and when you
- 28:15string a lot of diseases together, the result is frequently a plague. But
- 28:19it's from plays like that that I make a living. That's what I get
- 28:23for reading books. I wonder if I'll ever go any place where I can
- 28:27wear Pearl cuf Links. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, created by Raymond Chandler,

- 30:42This is Roy Rowan speaking for CBS the Columbia Broadcasting System him back, Well,
- 31:00that was a great commercial for the Jack Benny Show. Definitely, seriously,
- 31:06it definitely did seem to dominate a lot of the breaks. It does
- 31:11give you an idea about how important Jack Benny was in the world of entertainment.
- 31:17In the late forties and early fifties. Basically, his decision to go
- 31:22to CBS keyed several other programs to come over to that network and really define
- 31:30the strategy of the networks. CBS was building its lineup around Jack Benny and
- 31:37NBC was trying to build up a lineup to counter Jack Benny. As to
- 31:41the story itself, it was actually pretty solid on the mystery part. There
- 31:45was one thing that seemed slightly in congruous with the way that I've seen Philip
- 31:57Marlowe portrayed, was him getting that massage. Nothing against either massage therapist or
- 32:06people who get massages, It's just not something I'd imagine Philip Marlowe doing.
- 32:10Johnny Dallar, Yeah, but I don't know, It's just not something i'd
- 32:15picture him do it. Maybe it's because of the idea of him as a
- 32:19poor and hard boiled guy making barely enough to keep body and soul together.
- 32:27So then again, the level of police cooperation that Marlowe manages is also amazing,
- 32:32with Lieutenant Debara basically apologizing for interfering in Marlowe's investigation, though maybe that
- 32:43was a little bit of sarcasm. Before we concluded for today, I did
- 32:49want to mention the passing of Lauren Becall. Most of our audience probably hurt
- 32:54about it, but this is the first episode of been able to record it.
- 33:00Certainly, she was a great, great actress. I did receive a
- 33:05question as to what her role in old time radio was, and she did
- 33:12a lux radio theater. She also did another series that's kind of rare,
- 33:17but her big program was Bold Venture, which she started in with Humphrey Bogart,
- 33:25and thankfully over the years there have been more episodes of that series emerging,
- 33:30and she really does provide a fascinating performance as Sailor to Ball. Regardless,
- 33:37she was a class act great performer, will definitely be massed. All
- 33:42right, Well, that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow
- 33:45with Nick Carter. Join us back here next Wednesday for another episode of the
- 33:49Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, sender comments to Box thirteen at
