- 0:00Speaker 1: Back in the saddle and ready to go again. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us this afternoon here on
- 0:06Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred the Zone.
- 0:07Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way.
- 0:08Speaker 1: If you are hearing in the background some well it
- 0:13Speaker 1: sounds like lawnmowers or leaf blowers or however you want
- 0:19Speaker 1: to think about those those kinds of tools. Yeah, that's
- 0:23Speaker 1: what's going on right now, because we're bringing you the
- 0:25Speaker 1: program from UFCU just fog Field, where the plan is
- 0:29Speaker 1: still to have baseball tonight, the home opener for the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Texas log Worns, as there'll be an action against the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Houston Cougars. Now, first things first, just to let you know,
- 0:39Speaker 1: in case you hadn't heard, the start time for the
- 0:42Speaker 1: game has been moved up by one hour. It is
- 0:44Speaker 1: now a five thirty first pitch instead of a six
- 0:47Speaker 1: to thirty first pitch. The reasoning for that is we're all,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I think, pretty well aware of what's headed our way
- 0:55Speaker 1: in terms of inclement weather, mainly in terms of what
- 0:59Speaker 1: is really really going to be cold weather over the
- 1:02Speaker 1: next several days, especially the next two to three, and
- 1:06Speaker 1: it could get very very cold and inclement tonight. So
- 1:10Speaker 1: trying to think of the fans who would be coming
- 1:11Speaker 1: out for this home opener. The officials for the university
- 1:17Speaker 1: have decided to go ahead and move the start time
- 1:21Speaker 1: for today's game up by one hour from six thirty
- 1:25Speaker 1: to five thirty, and as we speak at this moment,
- 1:30Speaker 1: that's still the plan. And that's why, which brings me
- 1:34Speaker 1: back to the leaf blowers and trash bollers that you hear.
- 1:38Speaker 1: What they're doing is trying to dry out the ballpark.
- 1:40Speaker 1: They've got a crew walking around here on the main
- 1:44Speaker 1: concourse at UFCU dish Falkfield and into the seating bowl areas,
- 1:49Speaker 1: both in the upper areas and down below in the
- 1:54Speaker 1: seating areas as well, and they're just trying to clear
- 1:56Speaker 1: out as much of the water because we did have
- 1:59Speaker 1: rain here earlier this morning into early this afternoon. Now
- 2:04Speaker 1: it is not raining right now. It is murky and
- 2:07Speaker 1: misty and gloomy and overcast and all that kind of stuff,
- 2:11Speaker 1: but no real precipitation coming down at the moment.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I just was out there a few minutes ago.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I went down and visited with head coach Jim Shlasnagel,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and you know, walked around into the ballpark and it's
- 2:25Speaker 1: not raining, and it's not even drizzling or even heavy
- 2:29Speaker 1: mist at the moment, so that's a good thing. It's
- 2:33Speaker 1: just gray and overcast right now, but with an eye
- 2:37Speaker 1: toward what could possibly happen with heavy duty cold weather
- 2:45Speaker 1: moving in. That's why university officials decided going in right
- 2:49Speaker 1: now in sixty three degrees and cloudy, and from now
- 2:53Speaker 1: until six o'clock there is a slight chance of precipitation.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But once they get beyond six, and again they're planning
- 3:05Speaker 1: on starting the game at five point thirty, then there's
- 3:10Speaker 1: almost no rain left in the forecast. However, starting in
- 3:15Speaker 1: the evening, around the time you get around eight o'clock,
- 3:18Speaker 1: the temperature is going to drop, and it's going to
- 3:21Speaker 1: really start dropping in the late afternoon into the fifties.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And by the time we get on to around eight
- 3:26Speaker 1: o'clock when we get to the back half of the
- 3:28Speaker 1: ball game, it's going to be in the forties and
- 3:31Speaker 1: then overnight, of course, it's going to get into the
- 3:34Speaker 1: high twenties into the morning.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So with that in mind, they want to.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Try to go ahead and you know, get a jump
- 3:41Speaker 1: start on the game and play it one hour. But still,
- 3:45Speaker 1: you know, at least relatively close to start time for
- 3:48Speaker 1: those folks who have their plans to come to the
- 3:50Speaker 1: ball game that had to get in the day of
- 3:52Speaker 1: work before coming in.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Ronald Savage, our producer, back in the studio this afternoon,
- 4:00Speaker 1: Keith Morland will joined me for the call of the
- 4:01Speaker 1: baseball game. As we we mentioned over the past couple
- 4:04Speaker 1: of weeks, with the newer configuration, if you will, of
- 4:12Speaker 1: how home baseball games will be televised at UFCU Dish
- 4:18Speaker 1: falk Field through SEC Network Plus and ESPN Plus. Those
- 4:23Speaker 1: games that are not selected for say regular SEC Network
- 4:29Speaker 1: telecast or an ESPN U telecast or something like that.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Any game that isn't selected for one of those would
- 4:36Speaker 1: be SEC Network Plus, which would then of course lump
- 4:40Speaker 1: into whatever subscription that you would have subscription based service,
- 4:46Speaker 1: whether you got Disney Plus or whatever it is that
- 4:47Speaker 1: includes ESPN Plus and would have SEC Network Plus that
- 4:52Speaker 1: would include that in in the in the subscription, so
- 4:57Speaker 1: you'd be able to watch it that way. But there
- 5:00Speaker 1: will be different broadcast crews that are working at We
- 5:02Speaker 1: visit with a good friend Ty Herrington, the former Texas
- 5:05Speaker 1: state head coach, who of course assists us on occasion,
- 5:08Speaker 1: did on quite a few occasions last season on Long
- 5:11Speaker 1: Worn Baseball and worked it around his ESPN Plus schedule
- 5:17Speaker 1: for Texas State telecast, and he's doing that again. But
- 5:19Speaker 1: he's going to largely be the lead analyst on a
- 5:23Speaker 1: lot of these games that will be locally televised or
- 5:27Speaker 1: at least televised through SEC Network Plus. What that means
- 5:31Speaker 1: is we have the benefit of having Keith Moreland back
- 5:35Speaker 1: in the fold for US for the Lion's share of
- 5:37Speaker 1: the telecasts to radio broadcast this season. So Keith will
- 5:41Speaker 1: join me as we did for nine seasons together of
- 5:45Speaker 1: Long Worn Baseball before he left to go to the
- 5:47Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs and then came back and was working for
- 5:49Speaker 1: Long Or Network. But now Keith back in the fold
- 5:52Speaker 1: with us, and glad to have him there all right.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Several things to get to on the program this afternoon.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You know, since we were off yesterday for the holiday,
- 6:04Speaker 1: we have not had the opportunity to talk much about
- 6:13Speaker 1: both Texas men's and women's basketball coming off. They're very
- 6:18Speaker 1: successful and busy weekends that they had the Long Worn
- 6:22Speaker 1: men on Saturday night, a huge win coming from behind
- 6:27Speaker 1: to the beat to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats. That was very,
- 6:31Speaker 1: very important and for their NC Tournament hopes, and we'll
- 6:35Speaker 1: talk about that and look at some of the things.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Also the Texas women, who have.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Been named the National Collegiate Basketball Writers Association Team of
- 6:49Speaker 1: the Week for what they've done last week, adding two
- 6:53Speaker 1: more wins o our top ten teams to the one
- 6:57Speaker 1: they had a week ago Sunday against South Carolina, And
- 7:02Speaker 1: as a result of that, that's three consecutive wins over
- 7:06Speaker 1: top ten teams. That has not happened in twenty years.
- 7:11Speaker 1: The last team to do that was Rutgers back in
- 7:13Speaker 1: two thousand and five when ce Vivian Stringer really had
- 7:16Speaker 1: the Scarlet Knights going very well and they won three
- 7:19Speaker 1: straight games over top ten ranked opponents. Well, that's the
- 7:22Speaker 1: story for the Texas women. Three straight wins over top
- 7:26Speaker 1: ten ranked opponents and up to in the AP rankings
- 7:31Speaker 1: number two in the country. There's only one team ranked
- 7:34Speaker 1: to head them in the country, and that's Notre Dame,
- 7:38Speaker 1: which has been on a roll and continued its role
- 7:40Speaker 1: last night by beating Duke in a key ACC game
- 7:43Speaker 1: in South Bend. Of course, Texas has only two losses
- 7:47Speaker 1: total for the season. One was the South Carolina. They
- 7:50Speaker 1: haven't lost since. Since that game, the Long Worne have
- 7:53Speaker 1: won ten in a row. And the other loss was
- 7:57Speaker 1: back in December in the acc SEC Chalnel and at
- 8:01Speaker 1: Notre Dame in overtime. Long Worns lost that game in
- 8:04Speaker 1: South Bend in overtime. So Notre Dame is the only
- 8:06Speaker 1: team ranked to head of taxes right now, they're number
- 8:08Speaker 1: one in the country and the Long Orange are number
- 8:10Speaker 1: two in the country. More important than that, however, more
- 8:13Speaker 1: important than that two things one is the fact that
- 8:19Speaker 1: the Long Worns have an opportunity. It was something that
- 8:21Speaker 1: we visited with Vic Schaeffer about the other day, that
- 8:28Speaker 1: they have the opportunity in their first season in the
- 8:32Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference to claim at least a share of the
- 8:38Speaker 1: conference championship and can call themselves conference champions. If Texas
- 8:41Speaker 1: wins out and their next game is not until Monday,
- 8:45Speaker 1: they have a midwek by this week, as do the Men.
- 8:48Speaker 1: But if the Long Oorns went out, which would mean
- 8:52Speaker 1: a win on the road in Athens at Georgia next Monday,
- 8:55Speaker 1: followed by another road game in Starkville at Mississippi a
- 9:00Speaker 1: week from this Thursday, which would be kind of a
- 9:03Speaker 1: return to Starkville for Vick Schaefer, his first time back
- 9:07Speaker 1: in Starkville, Mississippi, where, of course he did such a
- 9:09Speaker 1: great job in Mississippi State before leaving to come to Texas.
- 9:13Speaker 1: So they had those two games back to back on
- 9:16Speaker 1: the road, a Monday game in Athens, come back home,
- 9:19Speaker 1: one full day at home, then travel on Wednesday to Startvilla,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and they would play on Thursday at Mississippi State.
- 9:26Speaker 2: So there's that, and then.
- 9:29Speaker 1: They come back home for their regular season finale, which
- 9:34Speaker 1: is a week from Sunday against Florida. There's only three
- 9:36Speaker 1: games remaining on the schedule. All three of those games
- 9:39Speaker 1: are very winnable games for the Texas women, So they
- 9:43Speaker 1: come past the most difficult part of their schedule, playing
- 9:46Speaker 1: South Carolina twice, playing a ranked Missouri team, a ranked
- 9:50Speaker 1: Vanderbilt team. Of course, they had already beaten a ranked
- 9:54Speaker 1: Oklahoma team, so they'd beaten several ranked teams and then
- 9:58Speaker 1: had the three consecutive win over ranked opponents, with the
- 10:03Speaker 1: home win over South Carolina nine days ago, followed by
- 10:06Speaker 1: the road win at Kentucky last Thursday.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Kentucky was number eight in the country.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Then coming back and two days ago getting that win
- 10:14Speaker 1: over fifth ranked LSU, and it was just a slam
- 10:17Speaker 1: bang matchup between two really good basketball teams. LSU was
- 10:22Speaker 1: up twelve in the third quarter with about four and
- 10:25Speaker 1: a half minutes to go in the third quarter, ls
- 10:27Speaker 1: who led that game forty three to thirty one. Because
- 10:29Speaker 1: the long Horns had such a dreadful shooting performance in
- 10:32Speaker 1: the first half, there was one point in the second
- 10:35Speaker 1: quarter where the log Worns were four for twenty six
- 10:40Speaker 1: from the field, that equates to fourteen percent.
- 10:45Speaker 2: They really struggled.
- 10:46Speaker 1: They warmed up a little by halftime and got it
- 10:48Speaker 1: up to nineteen percent, and then warmed up a little
- 10:51Speaker 1: more in the third quarter and got it into the
- 10:53Speaker 1: twenty percent tile. And then they hit eight of twelve
- 10:55Speaker 1: shots in the final quarter and that ultimately settled the
- 10:59Speaker 1: men at thirty three percent. In fact, they wound up
- 11:02Speaker 1: not only with the exact same shooting percentage as LSU,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but the exact same amount of shots taken in shots made,
- 11:09Speaker 1: they were each team was twenty one out of sixty
- 11:11Speaker 1: three from the flour. LSU made one more three pointer
- 11:14Speaker 1: than Texas Long Outs were a perfect perfect twenty one
- 11:18Speaker 1: for twenty one from the foul line, so all of
- 11:22Speaker 1: that led to Texas getting the winner for LSU sixty
- 11:24Speaker 1: five to fifty eight. The long Warts are now twenty
- 11:26Speaker 1: six and two three games to go, and if they
- 11:29Speaker 1: win their last three games, they'll have at least a
- 11:32Speaker 1: share of the SEC title. They would be sharing it
- 11:35Speaker 1: with South Carolina if South Carolina doesn't lose another game.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Wheuse South Carolina got stunned on Sunday at home by
- 11:42Speaker 1: a really good Yukon team. Having lost to Texas, so
- 11:45Speaker 1: they've dropped two out of three, I'm not really expecting
- 11:48Speaker 1: South Carolina to lose any more games in the regular season,
- 11:51Speaker 1: so it's probably would wind up being a tie between
- 11:55Speaker 1: Texas and South Carolina, and since both teams would only
- 11:58Speaker 1: have one loss in conference play against one another, all
- 12:02Speaker 1: the other tie breakers are even, which we mean it
- 12:05Speaker 1: would come down to a coin flip to see who
- 12:08Speaker 1: would get the number one seed for the SEC tournament.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But here's the other big factor. The thing is is
- 12:14Speaker 1: for the Texas women. As we pointed out, the long
- 12:17Speaker 1: Ones in recent recent bracketological prognostications had been listed as
- 12:25Speaker 1: a one seed. Obviously, they did absolutely no damage to
- 12:29Speaker 1: those efforts by what they did last week. In fact,
- 12:32Speaker 1: they strengthened them. So the issue for what Texas would like,
- 12:36Speaker 1: what South Carolina would like, you know, certainly, would be
- 12:41Speaker 1: to be a number one seed slated to go to Birmingham,
- 12:44Speaker 1: meaning you play your in the women's tournament, you play
- 12:47Speaker 1: your first and second round games. If you are a
- 12:50Speaker 1: top four seed in any of the regions, you play
- 12:53Speaker 1: your first and second round games on your own home floor.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Win those two home games, and then go. And then
- 12:59Speaker 1: there's two sites for the women's Sweet sixteen and the
- 13:02Speaker 1: Lite eight, not four like it is for the men.
- 13:04Speaker 1: They play two regionals at each site, and those two
- 13:07Speaker 1: sites are Birmingham and Spokane. The long Horns have been
- 13:12Speaker 1: sent to the Pacific Northwest three of the last four years.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Including in Spokane, and.
- 13:17Speaker 1: They would much prefer I can tell you Vic Shaffer
- 13:19Speaker 1: and Steph would much prefer being slotted into Birmingham will.
- 13:22Speaker 1: They certainly helped themselves a great deal by doing that.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And we'll talk some more about women's basketball and where
- 13:29Speaker 1: they are. But up next, we're going to hear from
- 13:33Speaker 1: Jason Kent, Long Orange four, who's been in the starting
- 13:35Speaker 1: lineup of late and came up with some big plays
- 13:38Speaker 1: the other night in the Texas victory over Kentucky. So
- 13:41Speaker 1: we'll hear from Jason Kent coming up. We do have
- 13:44Speaker 1: inconceivable this hour, we'll do that as well. All that
- 13:46Speaker 1: and more coming up on a let's just say murky
- 13:50Speaker 1: Tuesday afternoon here at the ballpark where at ufcuish Fogg Field,
- 13:54Speaker 1: five thirty, first pitch five to fifteen pre game start
- 13:57Speaker 1: time for Texas and Houston on thirteen under the zup.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Let's Tuesday afternoon at ufcuws Frogfield.
- 14:03Speaker 1: There is baseball plan for this evening again a five
- 14:07Speaker 1: to thirty first pitch. They moved up start time one
- 14:10Speaker 1: hour for the Texas Longhorns to take on the Houston Cougars,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and we'll be on there five point fifteen with the
- 14:18Speaker 1: pregame start time of the first pitch is scheduled for
- 14:21Speaker 1: five thirty. We'll talk a little more long Horn baseball
- 14:24Speaker 1: a little later on in the program. Want to jump
- 14:26Speaker 1: to Texas basketball because the Longhorns have certainly helped themselves
- 14:32Speaker 1: in the past few days. When they went into the
- 14:36Speaker 1: three game losing streak. There are a lot of folks
- 14:39Speaker 1: that thought they there NCAA tournament at large hopes, barring
- 14:43Speaker 1: of course, a run all the way through the SEC tournament,
- 14:46Speaker 1: but the at large hopes were completely shot. Well, that
- 14:49Speaker 1: wasn't the case even as they were having to navigate
- 14:53Speaker 1: and deal with a three game losing streak, because even
- 14:55Speaker 1: then the lead brackets hologists and I usually consult three
- 15:03Speaker 1: or four different sets. But the two that are most
- 15:06Speaker 1: recognized and really the two that have been most effective
- 15:09Speaker 1: over the years, have been Joe Lenardi at the ESPN.
- 15:12Speaker 1: He's kind of the originator of bracketology, and the other
- 15:16Speaker 1: was Jerry Palm of CBS Sports, and both continued to
- 15:21Speaker 1: have Texas in the field even through the three game
- 15:25Speaker 1: losing streak. Now, I would tell you that in Jerry
- 15:29Speaker 1: Palm's estimation, they were in a lot more of a
- 15:33Speaker 1: dire predicament than for Joe Lenardi's ESPN bracketized to the
- 15:39Speaker 1: extent that.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Jerry Palm at Texas.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I think as the last team in and had him
- 15:45Speaker 1: playing in Dayton and as of today, as of this morning,
- 15:50Speaker 1: Jerry Palm still has Texas in the first four.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And this was updated.
- 15:56Speaker 1: This was updated yesterday, and so it was after the
- 15:59Speaker 1: games obviously of Saturday, or it was updated yesterday it
- 16:03Speaker 1: was after the games of Saturday and Sunday, and he
- 16:06Speaker 1: still has Texas in the first four as an eleven
- 16:09Speaker 1: seed playing in Dayton, Ohio against BYU. He also has Arkansas,
- 16:13Speaker 1: West Virginia Inn As eleven seeds there and then the
- 16:16Speaker 1: two matchup of sixteen seeds would be Quinnipiac against Southeast
- 16:19Speaker 1: Missouri State in America against Southern the four number ones,
- 16:23Speaker 1: he has Auburn in the south, Alabama in the midwest,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Florida in the West, and Duke in the East. And
- 16:30Speaker 1: that's how Jerry Palm has it Now. Joe Narni has
- 16:34Speaker 1: valued Texas a little more highly of late in large
- 16:40Speaker 1: measure due to their net ranking, which has been right
- 16:42Speaker 1: around thirty give or take one or two spots either side.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And he still has Texas not having to play in Dayton,
- 16:52Speaker 1: and in fact has upgraded him for being the last
- 16:56Speaker 1: of the four what they call the last four by
- 17:00Speaker 1: meaning the four schools that are the last ones that
- 17:03Speaker 1: would not have to play in Dayton, Ohio. At the
- 17:06Speaker 1: first floor, well, he had him as the number four.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Now he has him at the top of that list
- 17:10Speaker 1: with the winnover Kentucky with West Virginia the second team
- 17:13Speaker 1: out of that BYU is the third and Vanderbilt is
- 17:15Speaker 1: the fourth. The teams that he has playing in Daytony
- 17:19Speaker 1: as Omaha and Southeast Missouri in a sixteen seed matchup,
- 17:23Speaker 1: Southern and American in a sixteen seed matchup, and the
- 17:26Speaker 1: two eleven seed match.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Or eleven and a twelve.
- 17:29Speaker 1: He has the eleven seed matchup San Diego State and
- 17:32Speaker 1: Oklahoma still in the field, although falling precipitously the lost
- 17:36Speaker 1: to LSU did a lot of damage to the Sooners
- 17:39Speaker 1: NCAA tournament homes, and then Arkansas and Wake Forest as
- 17:43Speaker 1: a twelve there, and he has Texas as a ten
- 17:48Speaker 1: seed that's up a spot from eleven seed prior to
- 17:51Speaker 1: the Kentucky game and playing Saint Mary's in the first
- 17:54Speaker 1: round in Milwaukee.
- 17:54Speaker 2: So anyway, that's an.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Update in terms of the of where the bright catologists
- 18:00Speaker 1: see Texas. They and the other projections I've seen all
- 18:05Speaker 1: have Texas in the field. And Lnardi, who is usually
- 18:10Speaker 1: in the ninety six to ninety eight percentile of correct
- 18:14Speaker 1: when the field is announced, has Texas not having to
- 18:19Speaker 1: play in the first four and date. But the logworts
- 18:21Speaker 1: have important games remaining. They have a midweek. By this
- 18:24Speaker 1: week they go to South Carolina where South Carolina is
- 18:27Speaker 1: still trying to win its first conference game. Then after
- 18:32Speaker 1: that they have a road game at Arkansas, which won't
- 18:37Speaker 1: be easy.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Of course, they already lost Arkansas home.
- 18:40Speaker 1: They have a home game against Georgia, a road game
- 18:43Speaker 1: at Mississippi State, and then they finished the regular season
- 18:48Speaker 1: at home against Oklahoma. So there's still some Quad one
- 18:51Speaker 1: opportunities to win games out there, most notably against Arkansas
- 18:54Speaker 1: and Oklahoma, so they do need wins. One of the
- 18:57Speaker 1: guys who has been important for Texas of late in
- 19:02Speaker 1: climbing back into NCAA tournament regular conversation as Jason Kent,
- 19:09Speaker 1: the Indiana State transfer forward. Jason had to be inserted
- 19:12Speaker 1: into the lineup mainly as a reserve at first in
- 19:16Speaker 1: the lost Alabama last Tuesday when Tremont Mark had to
- 19:22Speaker 1: leave the game and or excuse me not Tremont Mark
- 19:26Speaker 1: when Arthur Kluma had the check out of the game
- 19:30Speaker 1: with his knee injury, and Kent ended up having a
- 19:33Speaker 1: Texas career high seventeen points in that game. He came
- 19:36Speaker 1: back and played well on Saturday in a starting role
- 19:39Speaker 1: with again Arthur Kluma out of the lineup, and Texas
- 19:43Speaker 1: was able to win that game against fifteenth Frank Kentucky
- 19:45Speaker 1: despite not having Kluma on the floor. Kent certainly helped
- 19:48Speaker 1: on all of that. Remember, Jason Kent was one of
- 19:50Speaker 1: the other walking wounded for Texas. He had a wrist
- 19:53Speaker 1: injury and was unable really even to play in the
- 19:55Speaker 1: first few games. So earlier today, in a Zoom media availability,
- 19:59Speaker 1: Jason camp was asked some questions and the first one
- 20:02Speaker 1: that went into him was how long did it take
- 20:05Speaker 1: him to heal from that risk injury.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I would say it took me, you know, prodeically about
- 20:12Speaker 3: six weeks to get one hundred you know, even now,
- 20:15Speaker 3: you know, I still maintain it, you know, I still
- 20:17Speaker 3: do my recovery and stuff, but I feel like I'm
- 20:20Speaker 3: back to one hundred percent probably mid late January for sure.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Well, that certainly helps, and so that leads into this
- 20:28Speaker 1: next question for Jason Kent about the adjustment phase that
- 20:31Speaker 1: he's had to go through since transferring from Indiana State
- 20:35Speaker 1: to Texas. There's a lot of things to adjust to,
- 20:37Speaker 1: especially as he was coming off the injury. But Kent
- 20:40Speaker 1: was asked what's been the biggest adjustment for him transferring
- 20:44Speaker 1: in from Indiana State, getting acclimated to Texas and being
- 20:47Speaker 1: able to contribute for the longrnes.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Just understanding what the team needs.
- 20:51Speaker 3: You know, we have a lot of high steel guys
- 20:53Speaker 3: on the team, and you know, we all want to
- 20:55Speaker 3: be successful. But for me personally, you know, adjusting to
- 20:57Speaker 3: this different role of you know, ways to impact winning,
- 21:01Speaker 3: to help the team benefit. You know, whatever my minutes are,
- 21:05Speaker 3: I'm going to do what I can in those minutes
- 21:06Speaker 3: to you know, leave an impact on him. Well, that's
- 21:09Speaker 3: certainly important.
- 21:11Speaker 1: And then Jason was then further asked about the adjustment
- 21:17Speaker 1: and had it been as difficult or as challenging for
- 21:23Speaker 1: him to adjust to the offense that Texas has put
- 21:27Speaker 1: in order as opposed to what he had to do
- 21:29Speaker 1: when he was at Indiana State and the Sycamores offense.
- 21:33Speaker 2: It was.
- 21:33Speaker 3: It was definitely an adjustment, you know, coming from the
- 21:36Speaker 3: office that I went to was a lot more movement.
- 21:38Speaker 3: You know, we had a you know, we had a
- 21:41Speaker 3: passing big man back on my old school. So just
- 21:43Speaker 3: adjusting to the new players and the new team to
- 21:46Speaker 3: figure out where I can cut and where I can
- 21:47Speaker 3: get my opportunities to is definitely an adjustment.
- 21:51Speaker 1: So in addition to that, a couple other questions for
- 21:54Speaker 1: Jason Kent.
- 21:55Speaker 2: He was He was also asked, was.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Jason in adjusting to this team and getting ready for
- 22:07Speaker 1: his opportunity to play for Texas. He was asked about
- 22:12Speaker 1: the Kentucky matchup and how important that Kentucky game was
- 22:18Speaker 1: for him, and really in a fact, because he came
- 22:22Speaker 1: up with some key rebounds, a key putback buck that
- 22:25Speaker 1: made a great pass to Trey Johnson as well for
- 22:29Speaker 1: lay In. So Camp was asked, was the Kentucky game
- 22:33Speaker 1: his best game? As a long worn this season?
- 22:36Speaker 3: These past few games, it has been, you know, just
- 22:39Speaker 3: getting back in the flow, especially being out for an
- 22:41Speaker 3: entire month, figuring out where I fit in. Now, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 3: guys been playing since November and I was out for
- 22:49Speaker 3: you know, pretty much the whole k Noon Conference. So
- 22:50Speaker 3: just figuring out where I can fit in with the
- 22:53Speaker 3: flow that's already been created.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So there was that, And then again,
- 22:57Speaker 1: as I mentioned about the Kentucky game, was the Kentucky
- 23:01Speaker 1: game his best game of the season. Next thing, also
- 23:11Speaker 1: from Jason Kent was asked about adjusting to Austin and
- 23:16Speaker 1: this was a question that I asked him when he
- 23:18Speaker 1: was with us out at Pluckers, when I asked him
- 23:21Speaker 1: about the you know, the big differences between terre Hood,
- 23:24Speaker 1: Indiana and Austin, Texas, and there are definite differences.
- 23:30Speaker 2: He talked about that at the time.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Also, Julian Larry, who transferred with him from Indiana State,
- 23:35Speaker 1: said it's a world of difference from Terrehod, Indiana to Austin.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Jared Spencer, the left hander who started for Texas on
- 23:44Speaker 1: Friday Night in the season opener, transferred in from Indiana State.
- 23:48Speaker 1: He visited with both Jason Kent and Julian Larry and
- 23:51Speaker 1: asked them about the differences, and he said, yeah, there was.
- 23:54Speaker 1: So Kent was asked what is the best part of
- 23:58Speaker 1: being in Austin.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Off the court, It's a lot of things to do,
- 24:02Speaker 3: you know, in tara Hoe, you know, tara Ho is
- 24:05Speaker 3: the Indiana State is there's not a lot of stuff
- 24:07Speaker 3: to do out there. If you really want to do stuff,
- 24:10Speaker 3: you had to go to Indy. But you know, Austin
- 24:12Speaker 3: has a lot of things. You know, there's a lot
- 24:14Speaker 3: of good food places out here. I'm a big sushi guy.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I found some good sushi sushi bars down here. So
- 24:20Speaker 3: just being able to get out to the city and
- 24:21Speaker 3: experience a little bit of the city life is what
- 24:23Speaker 3: I say is the best part of Boston.
- 24:25Speaker 1: All right, there, it is some sound from Jason Camp.
- 24:27Speaker 1: We'll have some more from Jason coming up, and we're
- 24:30Speaker 1: gonna hear for Rodney Terry coming up next hour as
- 24:33Speaker 1: well on the program on AM thirteen under the Zone
- 24:35Speaker 1: second hour of the program as when we come your
- 24:38Speaker 1: way from UFCU Dish falk Field. There is a baseball
- 24:42Speaker 1: game scheduled for this evening and the schedule still has
- 24:46Speaker 1: it as going forward. Now having said that, they're moving
- 24:52Speaker 1: the schedule up by one hour, so Texas will have
- 24:56Speaker 1: its home opener coming up at five third instead of
- 25:01Speaker 1: six point thirty as the Log Warns will be taking
- 25:04Speaker 1: on the Houston Cougars. Houston took two out of three
- 25:07Speaker 1: against Minnesota over the weekend. Of course, the Log Warns
- 25:10Speaker 1: took two out of three up in Arlington at the
- 25:14Speaker 1: Shriners Children's College Showdown, and because of that they actually
- 25:25Speaker 1: were crowned the champions of that event based on run differential,
- 25:30Speaker 1: going two and one over the weekend.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So anyway, a good start for Texas going two and one. Yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Would they have liked to have been three and over
- 25:42Speaker 1: the weekend, and they certainly could have been. They were
- 25:44Speaker 1: up to nothing going to the bottom of the ninth inning,
- 25:48Speaker 1: unable to hold the lead. However, Louisville came back and
- 25:50Speaker 1: won the contest in ten innings, and they were able
- 25:55Speaker 1: to do that four to three, had taken a three
- 25:57Speaker 1: to two lead, or the long Wards took a three
- 26:00Speaker 1: to lead in the top of the tenth.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Louisville score two in the bottom of the tenth and
- 26:02Speaker 2: won that.
- 26:02Speaker 1: But Texas bounded back in a big way, a ten
- 26:06Speaker 1: to seven inning run rule win over Ole Miss on
- 26:10Speaker 1: Saturday night.
- 26:10Speaker 2: And again, for all of those of you.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Who have asked, and many have have asked me, why
- 26:15Speaker 1: did Texas play Ole miss A conference opponents in a
- 26:19Speaker 1: season opening tournament, non conference event, It's because that was
- 26:24Speaker 1: set a year ago with the knowledge that Texas and
- 26:28Speaker 1: Ole Miss would not meet in the regular season. You
- 26:30Speaker 1: don't play everyone in your conference on the SEC schedule.
- 26:35Speaker 1: You don't play every team in the conference. You wouldn't
- 26:38Speaker 1: be able to get in you know, you'd barely be
- 26:41Speaker 1: able to get in a couple of non conference series
- 26:43Speaker 1: if you played everyone in the league, so they don't
- 26:46Speaker 1: and ole Miss is not on the Texas Conference schedule
- 26:51Speaker 1: the season, so they played them in a non conference
- 26:53Speaker 1: game on Saturday night at Globally Field in Arlington and
- 26:56Speaker 1: Logrns won that one.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Ten to nothing in seven innings.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Luke Harrison went six and a third and was named
- 27:05Speaker 1: the sec Pitcher of a Week for his performance in
- 27:10Speaker 1: that one on Saturday. And then on Sunday, the log
- 27:14Speaker 1: Worns kind of outslugged Oklahoma State. They won fourteen to eight,
- 27:18Speaker 1: got up really big and in Oklahoma State scored some
- 27:20Speaker 1: runs lake but the long Warns ended up winning at
- 27:23Speaker 1: Max Blue had a big weekend overall. Will Gasparino had
- 27:25Speaker 1: a big weekend overall, each of those guys with a
- 27:28Speaker 1: couple of home runs, and the same thing for the
- 27:31Speaker 1: freshman third basement Adrian Rodriguez, who hit a couple of
- 27:34Speaker 1: home runs and was named the sec CO Freshman of
- 27:38Speaker 1: the Week for his performance over the weekend. So prominencing
- 27:42Speaker 1: start in this first season under Jim Schlisnagel as head coach,
- 27:47Speaker 1: and the log Oorns take on the Houston Cougars this
- 27:49Speaker 1: evening and again it was originally scheduled for six thirty.
- 27:52Speaker 1: It's a five thirty first pitch that mainly not so
- 27:56Speaker 1: much to dodge precipitation because it it's not raining here
- 28:02Speaker 1: at the ballpark right now, but it's it's kind of
- 28:05Speaker 1: murky and we've had some uh there was rain this
- 28:08Speaker 1: morning and then a little bit of misted. Uh that's
- 28:11Speaker 1: been kind of off and on, but nothing heavy duty
- 28:15Speaker 1: about that. Logorne were taking some early defensive endfield and
- 28:20Speaker 1: uh they're they're hitting inside today. Both ball clubs will
- 28:25Speaker 1: hit in the indoor cages today. As Jim Slosnagle told
- 28:28Speaker 1: me a little while ago when I was visiting with him.
- 28:31Speaker 1: He said, that's that's the We don't want to ruin
- 28:33Speaker 1: some baseballs out in this weather. So they're uh, they're
- 28:36Speaker 1: hitting inside in the cage. The mounds covered right now.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Of course, this field, uh it drains incredibly well when
- 28:43Speaker 1: when they do have to deal with precipitation. So they're
- 28:49Speaker 1: playing to play baseball this afternoon and again the first
- 28:51Speaker 1: pitch coming up about two and a half hours from now.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Texas did move up in the national polls. And something
- 29:00Speaker 1: that I have pointed out on many occasions in past years,
- 29:05Speaker 1: college baseball is different from all the other collegiate sports.
- 29:12Speaker 1: In terms of the numbers of polls, UH.
- 29:17Speaker 2: There are five.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Uh and depending on if there's there's actually a sixth
- 29:23Speaker 1: pole that's out there, there's six. There's really and truly
- 29:26Speaker 1: six different polls that rank college baseball teams weekly or
- 29:32Speaker 1: bi weekly and UH. And then there's there's there's some
- 29:36Speaker 1: that are probably more recognized than the other Baseball America,
- 29:39Speaker 1: D one Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
- 29:43Speaker 5: UH.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Then there's USA Today, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball rankings
- 29:49Speaker 1: as well, So there's really six polls involved that. But
- 29:52Speaker 1: the long Runes didn't move up in just about all
- 29:55Speaker 1: of them. They stayed number seven a Perfect Game, but
- 29:57Speaker 1: moved up one three spots in D one Baseball from
- 30:01Speaker 1: nineteen to sixteen, moved up to number twelve in Baseball
- 30:06Speaker 1: America and the NCBWA they moved up to number seven
- 30:10Speaker 1: from sixteen from seventeen. So anyway, they moved up in
- 30:14Speaker 1: those rankings. And of course the rankings don't mean an
- 30:16Speaker 1: awful lot right now. They're more conversational talking points right now.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So that's what they've got going on right now. So
- 30:25Speaker 1: they'll play Houston tonight, opening a homestand Dartmouth comes to
- 30:30Speaker 1: town this weekend for a non conference series, so they
- 30:35Speaker 1: have the series with Dartmouth and then they end upcoming
- 30:37Speaker 1: home games in non conference play. And as they continue
- 30:44Speaker 1: this homestand after they play Dartmouth, they have Incarnate Word.
- 30:52Speaker 1: A week from tonight, on the twenty fifth, they have
- 30:55Speaker 1: Incarnate Word at home. Then they go to Las Vegas
- 30:58Speaker 1: and play three games for three days. It's another one
- 31:01Speaker 1: of those deals like in Arlington, kind of a classic
- 31:03Speaker 1: where you play three different opponents. They'll have a Friday
- 31:05Speaker 1: nine game against Washington, then play an old conference rival,
- 31:10Speaker 1: former conference rival, Texas Tech on a Saturday evening contest,
- 31:14Speaker 1: and then finish it out with a Sunday afternoon.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Game against Illinois.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So they have that tucked in between one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 31:24Speaker 1: eight nine home games otherwise before they begin SEC play.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So it's Houston a three.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Game weekend series against Dartmouth Incarnate Word. Then after going
- 31:35Speaker 1: to Vegas for the weekend thing, they come back home
- 31:37Speaker 1: with a Tuesday game or March fourth, against Texas A
- 31:40Speaker 1: and and Corpus Christy, then a three game weekend series
- 31:43Speaker 1: against Santa Clara before and then followed by a Tuesday
- 31:47Speaker 1: game against UT Arlington and then they open SEC play
- 31:50Speaker 1: And what a way to open it up on the fourteenth,
- 31:53Speaker 1: Friday the fourteenth in Startingville, Mississippi at Duty Noble Field
- 31:58Speaker 1: as they'll play Mississippi State there in what could be
- 32:02Speaker 1: eighteen nineteen thousand fans there.
- 32:04Speaker 2: The way that they have.
- 32:07Speaker 1: The residents is if you will be on the outfield
- 32:11Speaker 1: walls and the party area, so it'll be an awful.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Lot of fun on them.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Also, the other thing I wanted to update on I
- 32:19Speaker 1: mentioned last hour about I was talking about college baseball,
- 32:24Speaker 1: but also a Major League Baseball update for you. Now,
- 32:29Speaker 1: I know this is probably just going to absolutely thrill
- 32:31Speaker 1: some people.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I say that tongue firmly planted in cheek, but.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Just to let you know when Major League Baseball has
- 32:42Speaker 1: Opening Day coming up on March twenty seven. Now, this
- 32:46Speaker 1: is not the opening day for the season in its entirety,
- 32:53Speaker 1: because the Cubs and the Dodgers will actually open their
- 32:57Speaker 1: season against each other in Japan a few day prior
- 33:00Speaker 1: to that, but when the rest of Major League Baseball
- 33:03Speaker 1: jumps into Opening Day on March twenty seventh, one of
- 33:07Speaker 1: those games that will be on Opening day will be
- 33:12Speaker 1: the Yankees and the Brewers at Yankee Stadium, New York.
- 33:16Speaker 1: ESPN is going to air the game, it'll be two
- 33:18Speaker 1: in the afternoon, and calling the play by play for
- 33:23Speaker 1: ESPN that day on Opening Day.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Joe Buck.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Joe Buck returning to the baseball booth. Now, of course,
- 33:35Speaker 1: he's been doing Monday Night Football with Troy Aikman, and
- 33:40Speaker 1: so that's what he's gonna do. But he's gonna call
- 33:43Speaker 1: a Major League Baseball national telecast for the first time
- 33:48Speaker 1: in four years. His last national broadcast was with Fox
- 33:54Speaker 1: Sports twenty twenty one, when he covered his twenty fourth
- 33:57Speaker 1: World Series and that's when the Braves won the World Series.
- 34:02Speaker 1: He did last year join Chip Carrey, who does the
- 34:06Speaker 1: play by play for the Cardinals home games well for
- 34:10Speaker 1: the Cardinals telecast, and he joined them last year on
- 34:16Speaker 1: one local broadcast of a Cardinals game. He's been doing
- 34:20Speaker 1: Monday Night Football since twenty twenty two. Now, for those
- 34:25Speaker 1: who are saying, what in the world is he doing
- 34:26Speaker 1: back in this thing?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Is you getting back? I can't believe it.
- 34:29Speaker 1: He's calling it a one off opportunity, says he's not
- 34:34Speaker 1: returning to the booth permanently.
- 34:37Speaker 2: That's where I said, I know that you.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Know some of you are just gonna be absolutely thrilled
- 34:40Speaker 1: by this, right because there's a lot of for whatever reason,
- 34:45Speaker 1: there's a lot of fans who are not big Joe
- 34:49Speaker 1: Buck fans.
- 34:50Speaker 2: For whatever reason.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I will tell you this, Joe Buck pokes a lot
- 34:57Speaker 1: more fun at himself than you would imagine.
- 35:01Speaker 2: He's pretty self deprecating on a lot of things.
- 35:04Speaker 1: And say what you will about him if you don't
- 35:08Speaker 1: like his personality or something technically mechanically, there's absolutely nothing
- 35:13Speaker 1: wrong with the way he calls the game football or baseball,
- 35:16Speaker 1: and he's got the Emmy Awards to prove it as well.
- 35:19Speaker 2: But he's going to be joined.
- 35:21Speaker 1: By former Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Bill Schroeder, who's
- 35:26Speaker 1: the lead color analyst for the Brewers, and he issued
- 35:30Speaker 1: a statement where he said Opening Day has always been
- 35:34Speaker 1: a signature day on the sports calendar, and personally it
- 35:37Speaker 1: remains special. ESPN approached me with this one off opportunity
- 35:41Speaker 1: to help launch the season, and it was a quick yes.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Joe and Bill are both great friends and better baseball minds,
- 35:48Speaker 1: and I know they will carry in the telecast while
- 35:50Speaker 1: I just plan to be along for the ride, so
- 35:53Speaker 1: that's gonna be there. It's an opening day doubleheader on ESPN.
- 35:59Speaker 1: The second game will be a night game with the
- 36:01Speaker 1: Dodgers hosting the Tigers. And again that the season will
- 36:04Speaker 1: actually be in several days prior to them when it comes.
- 36:06Speaker 1: The Dodgers open the season in Japan, but Joe Buck
- 36:10Speaker 1: back in the booth at least if only for one
- 36:13Speaker 1: game for Major League Baseball. All right, Up next, we're
- 36:16Speaker 1: gonna hear from log Worn men's head basketball coach Rodney
- 36:20Speaker 1: Terry talking about getting his team ready. They've got this
- 36:23Speaker 1: midweek by this week, and then they'll travel to Columbia,
- 36:26Speaker 1: South Carolina to play the South Carolina game Cocks on
- 36:29Speaker 1: Saturday night as they try to bill momentum coming off
- 36:32Speaker 1: that big win over fifteenth rank Kentucky on Saturday night.
- 36:35Speaker 2: So we'll hear from our tea.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're at UFCU dish Fogg Field, Texas
- 36:39Speaker 1: Baseball is the log Worns will host Houston a five
- 36:42Speaker 1: thirty first pitch five to fifteen pre game start time
- 36:45Speaker 1: right here on AM thirteen under the zone contend you
- 36:47Speaker 1: on this Tuesday afternoon here in UFCU, just fog field again.
- 36:51Speaker 1: They moved the start time up till five thirty today,
- 36:54Speaker 1: but making all preparations and plans to go at five
- 36:58Speaker 1: thirty and you can hear the game keep or to
- 37:00Speaker 1: join me five fifteen airtime here on the zone. Let's
- 37:03Speaker 1: shift back to basketball a little bit, Long Worn basketball
- 37:06Speaker 1: coming off that big win over Kentucky and getting ready
- 37:10Speaker 1: for the road trip to Colombia Columbia South Carolina's important
- 37:13Speaker 1: to delineate the two because remember there's two Columbias in
- 37:16Speaker 1: the SEC, the other ones in Central Missouri and Long
- 37:20Speaker 1: Worn baseball has to go there this year, but basketball
- 37:25Speaker 1: is in Columbia South Carolina.
- 37:26Speaker 2: So that was a big win. It helped in a.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Variety of things like net rankings and things like that
- 37:37Speaker 1: as well, so all of that stuff helps out. So
- 37:40Speaker 1: Rodney Terry, the Longhorns head coach, had a media zoom
- 37:44Speaker 1: today and I was talking about a variety of things,
- 37:48Speaker 1: and we'll hear some from RT starting us out. In fact,
- 37:53Speaker 1: we'll start with the question that he was asked about
- 37:58Speaker 1: transfer players, because we heard from Jason Kent's last hour
- 38:02Speaker 1: the Indiana State transfer and Julian Larry's transferred from Indiana
- 38:05Speaker 1: Tremont Mark has come in from Arkansas. I mean even
- 38:08Speaker 1: zerk on Yama last year came in from UTEP. So
- 38:10Speaker 1: you have you have transfer players in and it's more
- 38:13Speaker 1: of a hypothetical question than anything.
- 38:15Speaker 2: But Rodney was asked, is it.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Easier to coach the transfer players now than it is
- 38:21Speaker 1: in the offseason when you first get him in the program?
- 38:24Speaker 6: Well, I think they definitely have a more comfort level
- 38:27Speaker 6: with what we're trying to do. I mean, you know,
- 38:29Speaker 6: it's always hard for a first year guys to come
- 38:32Speaker 6: in and get really comfortable with what you're doing.
- 38:35Speaker 4: It takes some time. You know, there are a.
- 38:38Speaker 6: Lot of times that they're still trying to figure things
- 38:40Speaker 6: out as we go a little bit.
- 38:44Speaker 4: But once they figured out and they have a comfort level.
- 38:46Speaker 6: Now they're able to go out and play in and
- 38:47Speaker 6: I'm thinking as much in terms of what we're trying
- 38:50Speaker 6: to do offensively and defensively. But they've they've come a
- 38:54Speaker 6: long ways, and uh, I think just in coninuity in itself.
- 38:59Speaker 6: You know, when you were able to have guys in
- 39:01Speaker 6: practice every day, able to have games every day, and
- 39:06Speaker 6: you have better chemistry. Obviously we haven't had a whole
- 39:10Speaker 6: lot of that issue with guys in and out of
- 39:12Speaker 6: the lineup, in and out of practice, so we've had
- 39:15Speaker 6: to try to play our way through it, and I
- 39:18Speaker 6: do think those four guys have been pretty durable and they've.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Had a chance to have more comfortable what we're doing well.
- 39:25Speaker 1: One of those guys, as we pointed out, was Tremon Mark. Now,
- 39:28Speaker 1: he to me is one of the how shall I
- 39:35Speaker 1: put this feature curiosities of this basketball team. He came
- 39:38Speaker 1: in as a scorer, came in from Arkansas. He's from
- 39:42Speaker 1: Dickinson down in the Houston area and actually began his
- 39:44Speaker 1: collegiate career at Houston, played at Houston, transferred to Arkansas,
- 39:48Speaker 1: played one season at Arkansas, and now was.
- 39:50Speaker 2: In a log horn uniform.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Tremont came in as basically a recognized score. Got alto
- 39:56Speaker 1: a slow start because he had the ankle injury in
- 39:59Speaker 1: the second scrimmage I believe it was against Colorado, and
- 40:02Speaker 1: so he couldn't even play in the first couple of
- 40:05Speaker 1: weeks of the season. Finally came in kind of got
- 40:07Speaker 1: off to a slow start. Then he had a couple
- 40:09Speaker 1: of big games. Then he got a shoulder injury against
- 40:12Speaker 1: ironically the team that he had played for prior Arkansas,
- 40:15Speaker 1: and it really slowed him down over the course of
- 40:18Speaker 1: the three game losing streak. In fact, wasn't even available
- 40:22Speaker 1: in the midst of that and the loss of Vanderbilt,
- 40:25Speaker 1: and so was able to come back and play against
- 40:28Speaker 1: Alabama and then played really really well against Kentucky. And
- 40:33Speaker 1: one thing tremon has done has really been to improve
- 40:37Speaker 1: his defense as well as what he's able to do scoring. Now,
- 40:40Speaker 1: having said that, he scored twenty six points on Saturday night,
- 40:42Speaker 1: that was a Texas career high for him, and so
- 40:46Speaker 1: Rodney terror has asked, what did Tremont do differently against Kentucky.
- 40:51Speaker 6: I think the thing we've really trying to challenge tremon
- 40:53Speaker 6: Wood is being a gad that's one of our better
- 40:57Speaker 6: own ball defenders, got better team, he was offensive player.
- 41:01Speaker 6: So he's had that challenge in a lot of ball games,
- 41:05Speaker 6: you know, challenges and get lost playing really hard on
- 41:07Speaker 6: offense on defense. So when it's time for him to
- 41:10Speaker 6: make a meeting for Shot, make a meeting for Reid,
- 41:13Speaker 6: you know, where he engages to and hits an open man,
- 41:16Speaker 6: it's time for him to go crash and try to
- 41:18Speaker 6: get an office and rebound. He's ready to do that.
- 41:21Speaker 6: He's lathered up, he's ready to do that at an
- 41:23Speaker 6: elite level. I thought he really set the tone defensively forced,
- 41:28Speaker 6: and I think it led to an office of night
- 41:32Speaker 6: where things came easy for him. You know, early in
- 41:35Speaker 6: the game he went for a fifty to fifty ball,
- 41:37Speaker 6: dove on the floor, was first to the floor, and
- 41:40Speaker 6: really set the tone I thought for our team. So
- 41:43Speaker 6: anytime you plan that way, I think offense is gonna
- 41:46Speaker 6: come a lot easier to you.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's a guy that has been able to
- 41:51Speaker 1: contribute to both ends, and they're gonna need him, and
- 41:53Speaker 1: they're gonna need him as as an additional score in
- 41:56Speaker 1: addition to Trey Johnson, who just continues to be amazing
- 42:00Speaker 1: in what he's done as a freshman and named again
- 42:02Speaker 1: SEC Freshman of the Week, fourth time this season that
- 42:06Speaker 1: he has done that. But going back to the transfer thing,
- 42:09Speaker 1: and as I mentioned, we heard from Jason Kent last hour.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Jason is an interesting story as well because his dad,
- 42:17Speaker 1: twenty years ago, it's been a while, was the head
- 42:20Speaker 1: basketball coach in this town at Houston Tillotson, and his
- 42:25Speaker 1: mom was an athlete as well, and so Rodney Terry
- 42:27Speaker 1: was asked if he how did he cross pass with
- 42:32Speaker 1: Jason Kent's dad and his past experiences with coaches players
- 42:36Speaker 1: on his teams.
- 42:38Speaker 6: You know, yeah, I think you know Jason's dad and
- 42:42Speaker 6: cross pass quite a bit.
- 42:43Speaker 4: You know.
- 42:44Speaker 6: When he was here as a head coach at Houston, Jillison,
- 42:47Speaker 6: I was an assistant here for Rick during that tenure.
- 42:50Speaker 4: His mom worked on campus. She worked over with.
- 42:54Speaker 6: The Loss Does and his staff, Jim Bacon, those guys
- 42:58Speaker 6: she worked you know, on camp for for a number
- 43:01Speaker 6: of years. You know, I think a coach's son, I'm
- 43:06Speaker 6: a product of being a coach's son.
- 43:09Speaker 4: I think they always they always think like a coach.
- 43:11Speaker 6: They always have a cerebral understanding of the game because
- 43:14Speaker 6: they've been around the game their whole lives, you know,
- 43:17Speaker 6: and uh, I think they're still always learning.
- 43:20Speaker 4: But but you.
- 43:22Speaker 6: Know, just instinct that if you're sitting there watching the
- 43:24Speaker 6: game with your dad, you're looking at the game through
- 43:26Speaker 6: a different lens that maybe you know a kid that
- 43:29Speaker 6: doesn't have a dad that's a coach. So I think
- 43:33Speaker 6: they're definitely all characteristics of being a coach's son.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Just having a great feel for the game.
- 43:39Speaker 6: Jason has a cerebral feel for the game and understanding
- 43:43Speaker 6: of how to play defensively, cut offensively, spacing on the floor.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Have I coached other coaches sons?
- 43:53Speaker 6: Yes.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Do you like coaching coaches sons.
- 43:56Speaker 6: Yes, because you like to think that they're gonna be
- 43:59Speaker 6: cerebral guy.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Yeah, And Jason kenn is one of those guys. Here's
- 44:05Speaker 1: a question that Rodnie's been asked, oh conservative guess eight
- 44:12Speaker 1: ten times at various points during the season. The thing
- 44:15Speaker 1: about trying to get a team to gel together, to congeal,
- 44:22Speaker 1: that sort of thing. And you know, Archie likes to
- 44:25Speaker 1: discuss the fact when you ask him about what the
- 44:28Speaker 1: identity of the team is supposed to be, he says,
- 44:31Speaker 1: in November and December, you're really trying to establish that identity,
- 44:34Speaker 1: and then once you get in the conference play, you're
- 44:36Speaker 1: trying to solidify the identity that you establish.
- 44:41Speaker 2: And carry you forward to winning.
- 44:43Speaker 1: All of that involves the chemistry, the makeup, what's that
- 44:47Speaker 1: c word we hear so often, culture, all of those
- 44:50Speaker 1: kinds of things. So our team was asked if he
- 44:53Speaker 1: had seen a moment where he felt like the team
- 44:56Speaker 1: was gelling.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Well, again, I.
- 44:57Speaker 6: Think we're getting better with that again, I think, uh,
- 45:01Speaker 6: you know, for us, and probably not just us, a
- 45:03Speaker 6: lot of teams in this league play there are a
- 45:05Speaker 6: lot of different guys that are going in and out
- 45:07Speaker 6: of the lineup right now, just based on availability.
- 45:11Speaker 4: You know.
- 45:11Speaker 6: I think it's really hard to get into a great
- 45:13Speaker 6: flow and have a lot of continuity when you don't
- 45:18Speaker 6: have your guys consistently every day in practice and consistently
- 45:22Speaker 6: in games.
- 45:23Speaker 4: So you got to play through some of that.
- 45:25Speaker 6: You got to play through some of that, and end games,
- 45:28Speaker 6: you got to play through some of it, uh, you know,
- 45:30Speaker 6: in the course of the season. And I think we're
- 45:33Speaker 6: getting better with that as we continue to have more
- 45:35Speaker 6: guys in the floor what we're doing every day. You know,
- 45:39Speaker 6: Tray's gonna feel really comfortable, you know with Kate, and
- 45:42Speaker 6: he's played with Katen all season. You know, he's getting
- 45:44Speaker 6: more and more comfortable playing with Jason, you know, in
- 45:47Speaker 6: certain situations and opportunities, whether it be offensively or defensively.
- 45:51Speaker 6: So I think we're still a work in progress with that.
- 45:55Speaker 6: I do think we're getting better, though.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I know that that's a phrase that can be maddening
- 46:02Speaker 1: to fans as the team is in the final. What
- 46:07Speaker 1: one fifth of its regular season, and you hear the
- 46:11Speaker 1: head coach say, we're still a work in progress. Listen
- 46:13Speaker 1: Sark said the same thing late in the year, with
- 46:16Speaker 1: the run that Texas had and winning thirteen ball games
- 46:20Speaker 1: during the course of the year. He said, we're still
- 46:23Speaker 1: trying to improve. We're still trying to get better every week.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I think we'll hear Jim Schlasnegalis say that during the
- 46:30Speaker 1: course of the season that they're still trying to improve.
- 46:32Speaker 1: They're still trying to get better. Each game represents that opportunity.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Vick Schafer says it about his women's team all the time.
- 46:39Speaker 1: That he said, we're going to find out more about
- 46:41Speaker 1: ourselves this week coming off that win, and we'll have
- 46:45Speaker 1: more on the women coming up. One other from Rodney
- 46:47Speaker 1: Terry before we take a break this stretch that I
- 46:50Speaker 1: talked about. These five games that remain following the midweek
- 46:54Speaker 1: open day at South Carolina on Saturday at Arkansas, the
- 46:59Speaker 1: next wins at home against Georgia, at Mississippi State, and
- 47:04Speaker 1: then at home against Oklahoma. If you're following those bracketological prognostications,
- 47:11Speaker 1: some things like that, if you're following those things, they
- 47:14Speaker 1: would say the long Orange would do well to at
- 47:17Speaker 1: least win three of those games, and all five really
- 47:21Speaker 1: and truly are winnable games. Some are going to be
- 47:23Speaker 1: more difficult assignments than others, especially the two road games,
- 47:27Speaker 1: the ones or two of the three road games, the
- 47:29Speaker 1: one in LA and the one in Starkville, are going
- 47:32Speaker 1: to be very difficult assignments. But if long Orangs could
- 47:35Speaker 1: take one of those two, win the South Carolina game,
- 47:38Speaker 1: and then protect the home court against Georgia and Oklahoma,
- 47:40Speaker 1: there'll be a lot to be in the NCAA Tournament.
- 47:43Speaker 2: So the question for Rodney.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Terry, how can he get his team prepared now for
- 47:48Speaker 1: this remaining five game stretch of the regular season.
- 47:52Speaker 6: Well, for US, I mean this buye we couldn't come
- 47:55Speaker 6: in a better time for US.
- 47:56Speaker 4: We still, you know, in the process.
- 47:59Speaker 6: Of mending guys, you know, whether it's Author Columba, whether
- 48:02Speaker 6: it's Kendal Weaver, uh Devon prior to these guys really
- 48:05Speaker 6: needed some extended time.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Even Treymont needed.
- 48:08Speaker 6: Some you know, extended time because these guys have all
- 48:11Speaker 6: missed a significant amount of time, you know, this season,
- 48:15Speaker 6: even Jason Kent, you know, missing over ten games. You know,
- 48:21Speaker 6: just the recovery piece continue to get you know, better,
- 48:24Speaker 6: with the with the with being on the floor with guys.
- 48:29Speaker 6: Uh has been great for us, you know. I think again,
- 48:32Speaker 6: you're playing your best basketball when you have everybody every
- 48:35Speaker 6: day in practice and you're able to have competitive practices
- 48:38Speaker 6: that assimilate game situations. We've had a few opportunities this
- 48:44Speaker 6: year where we've had very competitive practices.
- 48:46Speaker 4: I thought they carried over into our games.
- 48:48Speaker 6: I thought last year's team got better as we continued
- 48:52Speaker 6: to heal and men guys and they could practice the
- 48:55Speaker 6: way we want to play. I think this team here
- 48:59Speaker 6: over the next couple of weeks, he's gonna get a
- 49:01Speaker 6: chance to have competitive practices as we continue to get
- 49:05Speaker 6: bodies back into practices, so that way we'll be able
- 49:08Speaker 6: to really similate the way we have to play in
- 49:11Speaker 6: games with a lot of our main guys going against
- 49:14Speaker 6: the main guys, you know. So I think that always
- 49:17Speaker 6: helps and raise the level of play this time of year,
- 49:20Speaker 6: when you were able to do that now for a
- 49:21Speaker 6: long period of time, but for an hour at a time,
- 49:25Speaker 6: we should be able to get in and have try
- 49:27Speaker 6: to have really good execution, you know, with our ones
- 49:29Speaker 6: and twos.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Yeah, availability always helps when you get everybody.
- 49:34Speaker 2: They've had all.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Of the players on the roster available for all of
- 49:40Speaker 1: one game this year.
- 49:42Speaker 2: That's it one.
- 49:43Speaker 1: There's only been one game where they had everybody available,
- 49:46Speaker 1: and then and then injuries have set in. Somebody else
- 49:48Speaker 1: would go down, somebody would come back, somebody else would
- 49:50Speaker 1: go down.
- 49:51Speaker 2: So getting everybody back makes a big difference.
- 49:53Speaker 1: All right, we'll turn our attention back to long worn
- 49:56Speaker 1: baseball coming up and this and this big match, the
- 50:01Speaker 1: home opening debut for Jim Slasnaga when we continue here
- 50:04Speaker 1: on Am thirteen under the zone here on a Tuesday
- 50:07Speaker 1: afternoon at UFCU dish fogg Field, Texas.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Let me just say they're due to play at five
- 50:15Speaker 2: point thirty.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Let me let me, let me let me just say
- 50:17Speaker 1: that I love your optimism. Right now, I said scheduled,
- 50:23Speaker 1: they're due to play. As I say that, there's rain
- 50:25Speaker 1: now coming down there. And that's when I got here
- 50:27Speaker 1: to the ballpark about noon today, there was no rain.
- 50:30Speaker 1: There was a little bit of miss and then the
- 50:32Speaker 1: miss stopped. It's raining again right now.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Now. Having said that, I just looked at the forecast.
- 50:39Speaker 1: The rain is supposed to be intermittent until late this afternoon,
- 50:43Speaker 1: and then it's supposed to hold off, and then it's
- 50:45Speaker 1: going to get cold tonight. As such, my broadcast partner,
- 50:49Speaker 1: Keith Mortland, joins me up up here. And it was
- 50:53Speaker 1: fifty years ago, yesterday, February seventeenth, nineteen seventy five. Fifty
- 51:00Speaker 1: years ago. Yes, you did against that powerhouse known as
- 51:05Speaker 1: Saint Mary's.
- 51:06Speaker 7: We played them quite a bit throughout my collegiate career
- 51:09Speaker 7: at the Clark and here at the Dish.
- 51:11Speaker 2: That was not the only trip they came up that
- 51:13Speaker 2: year to play.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Really, Okay, Keith was on the field that day, starting
- 51:19Speaker 1: we at third base that day, yes, as the Longhorns
- 51:22Speaker 1: won a doubleheader from Saint Mary's to Christen then dishfalk
- 51:27Speaker 1: Field now UFCU dish falk Field. All right, it would
- 51:30Speaker 1: probably take all day to list all of the differences
- 51:34Speaker 1: between how the ballpark played back then and how it
- 51:36Speaker 1: did now. But what were the most you know, other
- 51:41Speaker 1: than the old rug as opposed to field turf surface
- 51:44Speaker 1: as it is here, the synthetic surface here, But what
- 51:48Speaker 1: were the major differences in how the ballpark played on
- 51:51Speaker 1: that day fifty years ago plus one day as opposed
- 51:55Speaker 1: to how it will probably play this as.
- 51:57Speaker 7: Far as the ballpark. This turf much slower than the
- 52:01Speaker 7: turf that we had. Let's just start with that very
- 52:03Speaker 7: fast turf at the time that was it was coming
- 52:06Speaker 7: super turf with or something to that nature.
- 52:10Speaker 2: That it came out of Saint Louis.
- 52:11Speaker 7: If I remember Coach Gusson talking to us one times
- 52:15Speaker 7: about where it came from and what they were doing.
- 52:17Speaker 7: And I mean five days before the season opened, they
- 52:20Speaker 7: hadn't finished the pits shit. Really, yeah, so it was
- 52:23Speaker 7: a it was a mad rush to get it totally
- 52:26Speaker 7: set and ready to go.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 52:28Speaker 7: The outside walls, so let's say just start with that.
- 52:31Speaker 7: The outside walls were back off from home plate.
- 52:34Speaker 2: More than they are now.
- 52:35Speaker 7: It was a long way to home plate and the
- 52:37Speaker 7: old dish really all the way around. You did not
- 52:39Speaker 7: have the angles that folks have got a picture in
- 52:42Speaker 7: your mind when you get through the dugouts here at
- 52:44Speaker 7: the dish. Now it angles back to the file lines.
- 52:47Speaker 7: Those were straight lines going down. So a ton of
- 52:51Speaker 7: foul territory here in this ballpark.
- 52:53Speaker 2: You mean like like like like sunken diamonds.
- 52:56Speaker 7: Yeah, file territory. We worked on it all the time.
- 53:00Speaker 7: I'm on making sure we got out. So Coach Gus
- 53:02Speaker 7: would talk about a ball goes in the year, comes
- 53:04Speaker 7: down to ballpark, we get out. So third and first baseman,
- 53:07Speaker 7: second basement, and corner outfielders worked on a lot of
- 53:10Speaker 7: drills back in those days. We had the old Jugs
- 53:12Speaker 7: machine that had just come out. There were balls that
- 53:14Speaker 7: go up and we would have to be in a
- 53:16Speaker 7: position and.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Turn and go. Worked on it a lot.
- 53:18Speaker 7: We got good at it because we worked on it
- 53:20Speaker 7: every day. But so the ballpark was a much bigger ballpark.
- 53:24Speaker 7: It was three fifty down the left field line, three
- 53:26Speaker 7: point eighty to the power out in left field, four
- 53:30Speaker 7: hundred to dead center, three seventy five to right center,
- 53:33Speaker 7: and three thirty to the right field line. Coach Guss
- 53:37Speaker 7: had played at old clark Field and the wind blew
- 53:40Speaker 7: in it seemed like every day from right field. So
- 53:42Speaker 7: he said, hey, we're going to turn the ballpark a
- 53:45Speaker 7: different shape.
- 53:46Speaker 2: When they built it.
- 53:47Speaker 7: So we're going to move the fences back because I
- 53:48Speaker 7: think the ball's going to get out of here. The
- 53:50Speaker 7: wind blew in every single day of my junior campaign.
- 53:54Speaker 2: It was a cold spring and the wind blew in.
- 53:57Speaker 7: Of course, we had great pictures like Richard Wortham and
- 53:59Speaker 7: Jim Gideon uh Martin forst So they they loved it
- 54:02Speaker 7: because all they had to do was just throw it
- 54:04Speaker 7: to hit it into the wind, because it was difficult
- 54:06Speaker 7: to hit a ball out of this ballpark when it
- 54:08Speaker 7: first opened, So it played a lot lot bigger. It
- 54:10Speaker 7: stayed that way for about fifteen years and then started
- 54:14Speaker 7: some of the renovations. Coach Guss brought it in a
- 54:17Speaker 7: little bit in.
- 54:17Speaker 2: The left field.
- 54:18Speaker 7: He was one of the first guys then, and obviously
- 54:22Speaker 7: when coach Grido got here, he wanted to do some
- 54:24Speaker 7: more things. They didn't quite get that done, even though
- 54:27Speaker 7: he won two championships.
- 54:28Speaker 2: He wanted to move him in and make it a
- 54:29Speaker 2: little more of an offensive type ballpark.
- 54:32Speaker 7: You know, coach adapted to this ballpark as because his
- 54:36Speaker 7: style in California. If you go back to his great
- 54:39Speaker 7: teams at cal State Fruls and they weren't bunt and run,
- 54:42Speaker 7: I mean.
- 54:42Speaker 2: They could away. They slung the back.
- 54:46Speaker 7: Yeah, so he you know, his style, he had to adapt.
- 54:49Speaker 7: He became more Augie ball when he got here because
- 54:52Speaker 7: you looked at the ballpark, it was just one of
- 54:54Speaker 7: the most gigantic places to cover and you always had
- 54:57Speaker 7: to have great outfielders here.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Now in the last few.
- 55:00Speaker 7: Years, the ballpark has has definitely come back in the
- 55:05Speaker 7: foul territory much smaller. It's closer to home plate from
- 55:08Speaker 7: the back wall behind the plate where the fans that
- 55:11Speaker 7: the stands have moved down a little bit when they
- 55:13Speaker 7: put in the chairbacks stands.
- 55:14Speaker 2: So when they had the big renovation in eighth nine.
- 55:17Speaker 7: Yeah, it's really has done an outstanding job of making
- 55:21Speaker 7: the ballpark more of an offensive type ballpark. It would
- 55:25Speaker 7: be wonderful to me if they could take and do
- 55:27Speaker 7: the same thing they did with the yetty yard and
- 55:29Speaker 7: do the same thing in right field, even though that
- 55:31Speaker 7: is a storage area right now, there is that same space,
- 55:34Speaker 7: but that space is where they store a ton of
- 55:37Speaker 7: the equipment that comes out to work on the field
- 55:40Speaker 7: and batting practice and screens and all that stuff. So
- 55:43Speaker 7: you know, space is tight on the forty acre everybody
- 55:46Speaker 7: says is forty acres, Well, it's a lot bigger than
- 55:47Speaker 7: forty acres now, Yeah, but if they had some more space,
- 55:51Speaker 7: I really think they would take that in and that
- 55:52Speaker 7: would be another fantastic addition because it is so much
- 55:57Speaker 7: fun to see those people having fun there. They're right
- 55:59Speaker 7: on top of the fans. It gives you more of
- 56:01Speaker 7: a home field advantage. The one thing I've heard from opponents.
- 56:04Speaker 7: I know a lot of the ex coaches and Mark
- 56:06Speaker 7: Mark was was a good friend. Skip Johnson's a good
- 56:09Speaker 7: friend at Oklahoma. The intimidation is that there's so many
- 56:14Speaker 7: people here, but you don't get that field of being
- 56:18Speaker 7: right on top of you like you do at Bluebell.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Yeah, like they we're going to see at Starkville. Yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 7: So, but having the yetty yard and you've had another
- 56:26Speaker 7: and right field, and all of a sudden you close
- 56:29Speaker 7: that in a little bit because those outfielders can hear
- 56:31Speaker 7: that they're a long way from home play, and so
- 56:33Speaker 7: all of a sudden it becomes really creates a home
- 56:37Speaker 7: field advantage. Of course, the long ORNs have played so
- 56:39Speaker 7: well over the course of the fifty years of this ballpark.
- 56:42Speaker 7: I mean it's got to be close close to eighty
- 56:44Speaker 7: percent of the games they've won in this ballpark.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Hang with me, I got a couple more questions for you.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Where we before we get up to the top of
- 56:50Speaker 1: the are keep Moreland with us here on the program.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Of course, Keith will join me for the game broadcast
- 56:55Speaker 1: and for the majority of the game broadcast this season,
- 56:58Speaker 1: as you listen to Long Horned Baseball right here on
- 57:00Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone. Thirdly final hour of the
- 57:02Speaker 1: program here on AM thirteen under the Zone, and then
- 57:06Speaker 1: it's a quick turnaround because we have long warn Baseball
- 57:08Speaker 1: for you. They moved the game time up one hour
- 57:11Speaker 1: from six thirty to five thirty. That was in large
- 57:15Speaker 1: measure to dodge really really cold weather that's going to
- 57:19Speaker 1: be expected starting any moment. Yeah, well, according to the forecast,
- 57:27Speaker 1: it would be in the neighborhood of the eight to
- 57:30Speaker 1: nine o'clock hour, something like that. One thing that Jim
- 57:35Speaker 1: schlosnegle ha has seized upon and he's one of those coaches.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Of course, when did you or I Keith Morland ever
- 57:42Speaker 1: know know a college baseball coach who didn't want to
- 57:44Speaker 1: be plugged in the local mediorologist.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no question to find out, and.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Of course Roger Wallace or colleague happens to work manon
- 57:53Speaker 1: what's going on. But yeah, between Nick and and and
- 57:58Speaker 1: everybody else that's part of that crew to find out
- 58:02Speaker 1: what's going on. So Jim schlist Angels been plugged into
- 58:06Speaker 1: that ut as a meteorologists they consult as well. So
- 58:12Speaker 1: with all of that in there, they were kind of
- 58:16Speaker 1: been told that it really won't start getting real cold
- 58:20Speaker 1: until probably eight nine.
- 58:22Speaker 2: O'clock tonight somewhere in there, and as.
- 58:25Speaker 1: A result of that, it's gonna get, it'll get, it'll
- 58:28Speaker 1: get pretty uncomfortable.
- 58:29Speaker 2: So they decided to move the game time up an
- 58:31Speaker 2: hour now.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Having said that, it still drizzly here at the ballpark,
- 58:35Speaker 1: but of course the mountains covered. The teams are hitting
- 58:38Speaker 1: inside today, So if the rain is able to let
- 58:43Speaker 1: off like they think it might, and the forecast says
- 58:45Speaker 1: it should certainly about the six o'clock hour, then they
- 58:49Speaker 1: can start the ballgame if nothing else started at its
- 58:53Speaker 1: originally scheduled time, but they are scheduled right now to
- 58:56Speaker 1: go at five point thirty. So Keith Morland with me
- 58:59Speaker 1: during this portion in the program, and we were talking
- 59:01Speaker 1: about the veterans that the Longgorns had and young players
- 59:05Speaker 1: coming back, Tommy Farmer making strides, Will Gasparino coming off
- 59:09Speaker 1: the big weekend, Max Blue, as well Adrian Ryriguez being
- 59:12Speaker 1: named co Freshman of the Week in the SEC Jayalen Forest.
- 59:16Speaker 1: We know he's approven commodity eat the Mindoz of the
- 59:19Speaker 1: transfer from Arizona State. Be interesting to watch him at
- 59:21Speaker 1: second and Kimmel Schusler, veteran at first in Ryland, Galbin
- 59:24Speaker 1: behind the plate. Those are regulars. And then you go
- 59:28Speaker 1: to the mound and I correct me if I'm wrong.
- 59:32Speaker 1: I think the biggest eyebrow raiser to folks who followed
- 59:37Speaker 1: this program or follow college baseball overall, was how well
- 59:40Speaker 1: the starting pitching performed, at least in the first two
- 59:42Speaker 1: games in Arling.
- 59:43Speaker 7: I don't think there's a question about that. I mean,
- 59:46Speaker 7: I wasn't sure what to expect. Now there's things that
- 59:51Speaker 7: that I saw in the in the eleven guys that
- 59:54Speaker 7: got on the mound over the course of the weekend.
- 59:57Speaker 2: Pitchability, everybody's got to have something.
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: Yes, you love to look at the board and it
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: says ninety five ninety six, but if it's right over
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: the top, right at you, I'm telling you, Craig, I
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: can start swinging when you start winding up. I used
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: to say that you can throw two hundred miles an
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: hour straight hours.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: You throw it.
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: If you throw it, you know, down in the middle,
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: and I know it's common. I'm gonna get ready and
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: get the barrel to it. So you have to have
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: pitchability with that, and we saw that on Friday night.
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: I saw a young man that's got a good arm,
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: but I also like the way he used his break
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: the ball and it's different ups and down, so really interesting,
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: fun watch to.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Watch him go out and pitch. Jared Spencer Jared Spencer.
- 1:00:35Speaker 7: And then on Saturday you had Luke Harrison, who has
- 1:00:39Speaker 7: never really been healthy except those first few days in
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: his first year since he's been here. So you saw
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: a healthy guy that has pitchability, pitches, changes speeds, those
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: strikes in and out, has enough that he can, you know,
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: climb the.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Ladder with you.
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: It's enough fastball to do that, but it's just the
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: arm angle and the way he hides it.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Now you still have to have two more starters.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: I don't think that they know who exactly they are yet.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: But that's why you play. Even though you got to
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: go in a hurry.
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: We're inside a month to a trip to Starkville, Mississippi,
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: and we play conference, playing the best conference in America,
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: so that's the first thing.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: So you got to find him. And so.
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: I really liked the fact is that you've got some
- 1:01:22Speaker 7: different guys.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: You can look at it.
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: We're gonna get to see a freshman tonight and f
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: Is you know, I haven't seen him, so that's out there.
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: But coming out of the pin, you saw a veteran
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: guy that's been around a long time, been away from
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: the game for a little bit. And Will Mercer, you know,
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: he made a mistake, left the ball in the middle
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: of the plate.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: He makes one good pitch. Texas wins the Friday night game.
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: Really did a nice job in a crucial situation coming
- 1:01:46Speaker 7: into the game. I don't hold that against him at all,
- 1:01:49Speaker 7: but I like his stuff. He's a guy that attacks
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: and comes at you with good stuff. The other parts
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: of that, you've got some guys that all make the ball.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: They summer three quarters, summer over the top.
- 1:02:01Speaker 7: But overall, when you just look for everybody that you saw,
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: you could see pitchability.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: It wasn't like they were coming out well, we hope
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: that he can do this.
- 1:02:09Speaker 7: It's then if you've got pitchability, then it's confidence and
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: having some success and building that confidence and finding your role.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: And it will not take long for this.
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: Staff to figure out where guys are gonna plug in
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: and plug out the guy that came in on Friday,
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: Ruger Riojas.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: That's correct, Bruger Riojas, the iss A transfer from Wimberley.
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: From Wimberley is going to end up being that guy
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: to get those last outs. He's got that type of
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: stuff and it really did an outstanding job.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Might have hit the end of that window in.
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: His first outing just a little bit, might have had
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: to go to him just a little early. But if
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: you give him a four out, three out, say going
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: to be very difficult because he has got really good stuff.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: And boy, that is such an important part of being
- 1:03:00Speaker 7: a competitive program is to know, I've got to lead
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: going to the ninth I've got a guy that slams
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: the door.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: You know, one thing that's going to be unusual that
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: we're going to see a right handed starter for a change.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: It'll be Jason Flores is the freshman from Naming Forrest
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: in Garland, a four time All state hontere will who
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: will get the call to go to the map And
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I would if he has success, I think you would
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: leave him out there, let him go for a little bit.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: These guys have been stretched out of muff that any
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: of them really truly. When they do their outings and
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: preparing to get to this point, they all throw fifty
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: to seventy pitches in their outing, even if they're a
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: guy out of the bullpen, because you want to stretch
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: that arm strength the way you gold arm strengths, throw
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: more pitches. So I would expect him, if he has
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: some success and not to go fifty to seventy pitches.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Flores is a guy h fastball, sinker, cutter, and and
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: and a guy who can also mix in a curveball
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: and occasional splitter.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: So he's got an assortment. He's got an a sortment
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: of pitches.
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: But more times than not, when you say cutter, slider, sinker,
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: he's got movement to his fastball. Because sometimes young pitchers,
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: I'm not saying that he's the situation. Sometimes his young
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: pitchers have to figure out how to hold it. And
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: they're getting great education. Now a professional pitching coach, so
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: to speak. So well, we'll see what he's got. But
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: that tells me he's got movement to his fastball.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Okay, all right, let me ask you a couple of
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: generalized college baseball questions. We talked about this on the
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: broadcast Friday night in the season over, and I know
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: you and Roger talked about this as well. Changes to
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the game like we've seen in the major leagues, the
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: umpires checking the gloves in the hands of the pitchers
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: coming in. That's something that's pretty readily adaptable. The other thing,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I was watching the Arkansas game yesterday and then we
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: talked about the absence of PitchCom and the devices that
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: that have been you might say.
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: Redefined, redefined. And I've set in on the nationals Umpires meeting.
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: It was about two and a half hours stuff. Most
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: of the stuff that they would go over was stuff
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: that we all knew. I did make a mistake on
- 1:05:06Speaker 7: our broadcast. There will be microphones in the SEC, but
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: it will not be explanation of every play. It will
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: be explanation of a reviewed play.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Sue and I saw that when we were in college
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: station a couple of years ago, because we were given
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: a patch to put into our feed that said this
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: is the umpire mike. And I said, are we going
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: to hear them say no, let's ball outside. I said no, no, no, no, no,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: if you get a review, and sure enough and it worked,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: and the guy came over and the home plate umpire said,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: they call on the field stands runners out at first.
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: Well, but we're not going to get I had great
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: umpires friend to call me and he says he Keith.
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: I was listening and he said, the one thing you're
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: not going to get even in the sec you're not
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: going to get an explanation of a pitch count violation.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: It'll just go up one and know that they won't
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: do that.
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: So I misinterpreted that on the air and I take
- 1:05:57Speaker 7: that back. Now any review, we're going to get a
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: complete explanation, but you will not on some of the
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: things that happen in a game where a guy may
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: stand because if a pitcher's looking in and the hitter
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: bounces out, you see all things time out and everything,
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: and if you're not watching the pitch clock, and if
- 1:06:14Speaker 7: it's at seven seconds, there's nothing can happen. But if
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: it's at five seconds or under, the hitter gets cart
- 1:06:20Speaker 7: charged with a strike. So sometimes it's decisive of where
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: it's a striker or a ball or a ball or strike.
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: And then if both guys look in and one steps
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: off inside of five seconds.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: That the pitcher steps off, that's the ball. So all
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: those rules are the same.
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: We're just not going to get the explanation of those
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: rules very very well. And over the weekend watching all
- 1:06:41Speaker 7: the games, nine games that we saw some really nine
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: or six really good teams. They need to do better
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: at explaining that to tell what's going on. I've been
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: around the game my whole life, and there's still times
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: where I look at it and go, I'm not sure
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: how to interpret what just took place.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly what you described earlier about the batter
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: by stepping out being called for a strike. There's no
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: better example than that. And and I know you'll recall
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: this game Roger and I were doing it. But there
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: was a game I think three years ago in Fort Worth,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Trey Faltini got called out a third strike. Oh yeah,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: for that, and the place was about to go on
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: an uproar there in TCU, and then Mike and Tico
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: made it all relevan irrelevant e in a home run
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: and the very next pattern Texas up winning ended up
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: winning the game. But it was a learning moment at
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: that point, and it's a learning moment for young guys
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: about stepping out, stepping out.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: The interpretation of the rules. And then the last one.
- 1:07:33Speaker 7: All week are the practices I've been to. The extra
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: base down the first baseline has been burn Arch. I
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: thought it was gonna stay burn Arch, would come to
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: find out they're all green.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: They're all green. So that man hated green. So uh.
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: But during all the workouts, in the in the in
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: the innsquad games and everything, all the time, it is, uh,
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: it's been it's been burn Arch here.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: So I kind of thought maybe you could do it
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: by the home colors.
- 1:07:56Speaker 7: Well that's proved that wrong today because it's green, just
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: like it wasn't in ar.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: So when we're in norm in the final week in
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: the regular season, we won't see a red.
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: You're not.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: It's going to be green, and we won't see them
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: start and it is.
- 1:08:09Speaker 7: It is odd, though, to look down and see those
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: two bases together.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: It's just well, it's an odd look. I think Softball.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: League, Softball Craig Field, you unpleasant valley.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: That's what I think.
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: I'm so much of a traditionalist, I probably will adapt
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: to this pretty well. I don't want collisions, you don't
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: want players hurt. Uh, I understand, and that the safety rule.
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: I do understand. The breaking up the double play at
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: second base, because there have been college players that have
- 1:08:38Speaker 7: careers have been ended.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Uh in the old.
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: Rules, because you know, I played with a lot of
- 1:08:42Speaker 7: guys that you didn't want to turn that double play
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: at second base with this guy coming at you because
- 1:08:46Speaker 7: they were coming to get you.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I'm just telling you.
- 1:08:50Speaker 7: So, I do like to slide in straight in rules,
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: and I do like not being able to don't have
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: to block the plate and uh that kind of thing.
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: So uh, Tire Harrington, one of the head coach is
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: one of my good friends.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: It's I'm about to steal a few minutes from him here,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: so is He'll come in and he'll tell you the
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: same thing. He's a traditionalist too.
- 1:09:07Speaker 7: I mean we both have raised in the same time,
- 1:09:09Speaker 7: been around the games a whole long, but we also
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: understand safety. There is some safety things that that they're changing.
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: I was just saying, Tis, I'll hand you the headset.
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: I think the one biggest safety change is breaking into
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: double play as.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: A middle endfielder.
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: He'll tell you because when we played, I'm the same way.
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: I was pretty quick then I wouldn't let him throw
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: the first base. I mean you were going to take
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: him out, so that that part is that part's disappeared.
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: All right, we need a break. Ty Harrington is going
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: to join us up next.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: We're getting ready for opening night at UFCU Dish fart
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Field again. Texas and Houston still scheduled for five thirty
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: on the first pitching. Moved it up by one hour.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: Will keep you posted if there's any change on that.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: This is AM thirteen under the zone.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: The afternoon. It looks like it looks like the rain
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: has stopped.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: And that's a good thing. And it must have been
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: because Ty Harrington entered the building. So that's that's that's
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: why looking at that. So I'll we visit with the
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: coach each week. And uh, I was kidding you about this,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: but I'm excited for you about this. You know, you're
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: becoming a TV head and and and doing this, uh
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: doing this thing.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: But you've been doing you've been at this for a while.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: You've been doing it with Texas State and you're still
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: going to do your your Texas State scheduled this year.
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: Right, Yep, I'm still doing Texas State games. I want, uh,
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: I'll do that. They were supposed to have one this Friday,
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: and that's debatable. Yeah, at this point, where the weather right,
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: whether they're gonna move it, change it, and I'm not
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: sure what they're going to do yet, but I'll do
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: some of their games. And it worked out this year
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: really that when Texas is at home, they're on the road,
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: and so not every one of them, but a lot
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: of them worked out that way. And so yeah, I'll
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: go back to sam Markets and do a bunch of
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: games there, and uh, we're at all got where it
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: all got so where this all got started from me?
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: And then I got one more weekend at with Flow
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: uh College, and uh that I'll go back now next weekend,
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: I think it's Auburn, Baylor, Ohio State, and Oregon State.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: And and that will be a globe life, all globe life.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Okay, the last weekend that they have, Just like last year,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: you're going to see a good cross section of the nation.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: And and what what baseball looks like this year? Did
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: you did anything really capture your attention on aside from
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Texas just the overall what you saw the product on
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: the field, Uh this past week in the games at Irelandton.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: Yeah, and the gap you know, just took the headphones off,
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: was gonna like it because he'd have been right in
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: the middle of it too. Was the offense, Yeah, I
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: mean it used to be that opening weekend. As a coach,
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: you spent more time interested I don't use the word
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: concern interested in your offense. And the hitters historically were
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: behind the opening weekend.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Then you know, the pictures always a little bit ahead.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Funny that because Keith said that the other night, and
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Schlass said that to me about fifteen twenty minutes ago,
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: and he said it was a it was kind of
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: a flip up there.
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: I mean, starting Saturday at eleven am in the game on.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: Saturday, you could just It's like the barrels were wide open.
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: And even a lot of the outs to me were
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: loud outs, hard.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Outs, drives down the line, yeah, I mean.
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: Just balls it And to me, and Keith knows that
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: what you do too, you see more baseball as much
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: as anybody. The amount of authoritated hip balls, not just
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: balls danked in and not just flipped over.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: I mean, I just good me personally. Yeah, they were
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: on time.
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: I mean to me, if I sat there and somebody said, hey,
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: what what did you think about this line for the line,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: and I said, man, nobody looked overmatched. Nobody looked like
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: they were, you know, behind and hadn't seen anything, you know,
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: a lot traditionally a lot of schools when he come
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: down from up top, up north and come down here
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: to play that first two days, they really have a
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: hard time catching up with a velo, particularly on a
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: Friday night where they haven't he been outside under the lights.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Now this was indoors.
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: But I just was probably more impressed with the offense
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: than I was just about anything.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Why do you think that is? Why do you think
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: it's clipped? I don't know, I don't I don't know.
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: You just heard it from three different people, right that
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: have seen a lot of baseball, and Slash included him.
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: Now Texas, on the other hand, that the two riding
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: you know, shutouts for a little bit in game one,
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: you know, and then game two between the starters now
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: looks even more impressive to me.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: But I don't know the reason for it.
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: Maybe maybe the training indoor training facilities with the machines
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: being able.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: To Slast made mention of that.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: He said, how you can simulate, He said, we can,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: We could simulate Patrick Forbes there on Friday. He said
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: that we can computerizing and put in exactly what the
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: metrics is or what he.
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: Throws, so which allows you to get set up on time,
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: allows you to you know, physically and be able to
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: get your mind set up on what the veto looks like,
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: the breakers look like. So you're getting a look at
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: what you're going to go face. And so maybe that's
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: what it was. It's got to be something, because I
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: thought it was unusual. Now what I didn't do and
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: I didn't have a chance to nerd out because about
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: this because we were all traveling home at three o'clock
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: in the morning was I didn't get up on Monday
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: and read all the total scores around the country, right,
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: But I do know that there was a game between
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: two teams and ended up thirty something to twenty three.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Thirty six, twenty three, and it went seven innings because
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: it was a thirteen run margin thirty six in it
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: was the second highest combined scoring margin in college baseball history.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: And there was another game I think Rhode Island was
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: involved in this where twenty runs were scored in the
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: second inning, which tied for the most runs scored in
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: one inning in Division one baseball.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: So I'm going to go I mean, look, it's an
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: easy ask.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: I guess at the end to have some kind of
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: data to Kendall Rodgers or maybe somebody could go x
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: amount of number runs were scored in twenty four, twenty three,
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: twenty four, and this is what was scored opening weekend
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: in twenty five. And if it's a huge difference between
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: those three years, and I don't you know.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: Somebody baseballs all over again. We started looking at that,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: you know, something like that, and I.
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: Don't know, but I was in and again I would
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: say it is for there to be four maybe what
- 1:15:25Speaker 5: was it for almost five consecutive run rule games.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: Yeah, with those names of the teams.
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: That were in that you know showdown last weekend, I
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: would have never guessed. Somebody said, you know, you got
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: what are you taking the up? And uh, you know
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: over under on how many runs lets go? I would
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: have taken it under one hundred percent. Okay, your review
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: of Texas, well, I was impressing. I was impressed in
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: the Alumni game. Yeah, I remember you said that, I
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: look I look at things different and then maybe sometimes
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: I look at it to too much of a positive lens,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: but I.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: Don't think so.
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: This time was really impressed offensively they return and that's
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: and he's not an easy equation, but that's an apparent
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: equation that you can look at and depth and go,
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: we've got these guys with this many at bats. And
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: then to me, the difference started to become when you
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: watch Farmer and then you watch gas Marino, that is
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: a different hitter. Keith can tell you that nobody's no
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: swings any better than Keith Morrelon. But that swing is tighter, shorter,
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: direct and I think this past weekend I saw him
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: chase maybe just a couple of balls out of the
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: strike zone, which last year sometimes if you elevated and
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: hollered he would swing and been.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Working with too low.
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: Yeah, and I just I was impressed with that, but
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: I thought the path of his and the directness of
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: his swing was better. You can look at the physicality
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: when he runs around now his chest is out a
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: little bit more, with a little more you know, definitive
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: definition to it. And then I think the last piece
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: for me, offensively is the most obvious one of ball
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: and Robertguez, i'man to look, he's a beast so far.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Now how this year plays out for.
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: Him, none of us know if we had a crystal ball,
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: we'd all be millions and billionaires. But the reality is
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: when you watch him for the first few times, he
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: has an incredible ability, in my opinion, to get his
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: hands in a position to get the barrel flushed to
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: the baseball on a repeated event.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: Now, early in the year, early in the game.
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: Breakers got sped up a little bit in the beginning
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: of the of the tournament on opening night with the
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: three punch outs. You couldn't have asked for. You couldn't
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: have asked for a tougher start. And this is the
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: second equation for me that it tells about that young man.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Three punch outs and an air at third base.
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: I don't know if they scored in there or not,
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: but he misplayed it or it didn't make you up.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: And then he dribbles the ball to second base, and
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: so you're thinking, well, at least he make contact right,
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: and then he absolutely just landed all over the ball
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: to give his team a chance. Now, if people have
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: never been where you play your first college for a
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: program like this in front of your home crowd, wearing
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: orange and white, and you have the first four at
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: bats that you have in your first defensive play that
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: he had, and then you land on a ball and
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: hit a homer starts to tell me a lot about
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: that young man emotionally and what he did and then physically.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Then the rest of the weekend was I'm here. You
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: guys better get ready for it. That's cool, Hey, I
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: appreciate you doing this.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: I know you got TV duties now to get to,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: but we'll all have fun with this tonight.
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: Right, Always enjoy coming on with you, guys, And Keith,
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: I'm going to be honest with you.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: I still watch stuff on reels every once in a while.
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: It's it's a social media thing, and I'll watch it
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: a once in a while and I'll watch those guys
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: just run into people at second base.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: They don't even I mean run into them.
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: And you had an advantage because most people, a lot
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: of people don't know, but you're an unbelievable football.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Player, so you had an advantage. You already knew. You
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: already knew how to you already knew how to tackle
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: people safety right, you knew how to do it. So
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: all right, you guys have a great call, and I
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: appreciate you.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Let me come on, all right, that is a ty Herrington,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: who will be working on the telecast with David Salzman.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: All right, we have more coming up when we continue
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: from UFCU Dish falk Field on thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: We continue from the UFCU Dish falk Field getting ready
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: for this matchup between Texas and Houston as the team's
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: gone through the batting practices and again five point fifteen
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: pregame start time and the first pitch is coming up
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: at five point thirty. All right, let's let's hear some
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: more from Longhorn's basketball coach Rode Terry.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Like we said, they.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Finally arrived at the midweek by did Texas finally able
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: to get there in which they haven't had during the year,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: And obviously with the players banged up all season long,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: you would expect it would that that would definitely come
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: in handy. So here's the comments from the head coach
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: about how his group, the coaches, the players, everybody who's
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: handling the midweek by.
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: Yeah, Bron, I think the thing myself and our staff
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: tried to do this week was really continue to get
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: warn and Derby an opportunity to mend the guys that
- 1:19:58Speaker 6: we need the men to try to get them back.
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: To the floor force a little bit.
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:20:03Speaker 6: We've been thin here the last the last week and
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: a half of us or two weeks, just trying to
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: get guys healthy a little bit, trying to get demand
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: prior healthy.
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: You know, he got out last year, last.
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: Last ballgame, and it helped us a little bit, but
- 1:20:16Speaker 6: he didn't practice two days prior to that, you know,
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: and so he just literally went out and played for us,
- 1:20:22Speaker 6: which is hard to do.
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: You know, you're still working on.
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: Getting other guys mended him back to the floor.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: You know, we don't know we'll have kender Weaver.
- 1:20:31Speaker 6: We're we're hoping we're getting closer to having him back
- 1:20:33Speaker 6: to the floor force. Got to get aught the back
- 1:20:36Speaker 6: in the great state uh of uh, you know, playing
- 1:20:40Speaker 6: the way he's capable of playing as well. I think
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: for us, I gave the guys two days off. We
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: went really hard, We had hard stretch, so we needed
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: to take two full days off to try to get mentally,
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: uh hit the reset button mentally and physically, uh, in
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: terms of just you know, getting getting our body some
- 1:20:59Speaker 6: rest a little bit. So we did that. Came back
- 1:21:01Speaker 6: today with the short crisp practice. Really wanted to work
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: on some things that we're gonna need down the stretch
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: with our team, whether that's a change up defense, whether
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: that's you know, working to gift zone, just things we
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: have to continue to get better with. And then as
- 1:21:17Speaker 6: we get into you know, middle to the latter part
- 1:21:19Speaker 6: of the week, we'll get back in regular game rotation
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: in terms of what we do. You know, Thursday of
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: Friday leading up to a Saturday ballgame.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: And of course Friday would be the departure day for
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Texas headed over to Columbia, South Carolina to get ready
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: for this matchup with the game Cocks on Saturday. Now,
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: if you've noticed lately, the long Wards have gotten out
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: to some quick starts in games. Even the game the
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: lost Alabama Longhorns started off the game well quickly, did
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: so against Kentucky as well and in recent games, and
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: so he was asked, how is he happy with how
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: the team has started the games offensively before going dipping
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: down into the slumps during the first half when the
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: other team made its rot.
- 1:22:04Speaker 6: Oh, we've gotten off to gray starts in some games
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: and then win some games. So it doesn't matter how
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: you start, it's how you finish the game and how
- 1:22:10Speaker 6: you play for forty minutes.
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: You know, always tell our guys, you know, we.
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: Loved, obviously love to get off to a great start,
- 1:22:16Speaker 6: but but whether we get off to a good start
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: or bass start, we got to work the game for
- 1:22:20Speaker 6: forty minutes.
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: At a forty minute game. We've had some games we
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: played great basketball for thirty.
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: Two minutes and then win the game. So it's not
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: how you start the game, it's how you finish the
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: game and how you work the game for forty minutes.
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: But I think I do think it's important how you
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: come out and set the tone.
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: And for us, it's not on offense.
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: I know you think, hey, I want to come out
- 1:22:40Speaker 6: and get off till Gray star on offense. No, we
- 1:22:42Speaker 6: got to get off till Gray star. Defensively, we got
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: to come out and guard, set the tone. Then we're
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: gonna play really hold on right end of the floor,
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: go figure out what we have to do to score.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: You heard Rodney Terry talking about trying to get guys healthy,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: and you know, thinking about guys like Arthur Kaluma hadn't
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: been able.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: You know, had to go out during the Alabama game.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: Midway through the first half and didn't play the rest
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: of that game and didn't play at all against Kentucky
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: and that they would need Arthur uh and and some
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: of the other guys they've gotten banged up. Well, the
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: guy who's been out the longest has been Kenda Weaver
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: with that hip flexer situation. He's been able to start
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: working and been able to start practicing. And so Artie
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: was asked, is Kenda Weaver now able to be a
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: full participant on the practice floor.
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: He is not.
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: No, he hasn't not participated with with our team in
- 1:23:34Speaker 6: a full practice yet. He's done a lot of individual
- 1:23:37Speaker 6: things right now leading up to to UH to the
- 1:23:40Speaker 6: next couple of days and we'll kind of see see
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: where he's at at the at the at the end
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: of the week.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: Okay, so uh wea were unable to go uh, but
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: his progress has continued to get better.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: So as the follow up.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Artie was asked, how about Kenda Weaver's ramp up process?
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: What has that been like of late?
- 1:24:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think WARN's done an incredible job.
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: Dorby those guys done an incredible job of really trying
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: to put him in position.
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: To be in position.
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: Kenno plays, He's a unique player. He plays a different
- 1:24:14Speaker 6: way than than per se a lot of our different guys.
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: I mean, he's a fast he's a fast twitch guy.
- 1:24:23Speaker 6: He makes a lot of plays with his athletic ability
- 1:24:27Speaker 6: and his instincts. So he needs to have those flat,
- 1:24:31Speaker 6: those fast twitched motor muscles ready to perform at a
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: high level. So you know, he's gotten better. He's in
- 1:24:39Speaker 6: a better position right now. You know, we won't ever
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: put him out in a position where he can play
- 1:24:44Speaker 6: to his full capacity or that he he doesn't have
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: the comfort level to play the way he plays. You know,
- 1:24:53Speaker 6: he's one of those guys that he's an extra effort player,
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: uh and super at the.
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: And is what makes him the player that he is.
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: So we used to have Mighty Mouse back in the
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: day of Superman back in the day.
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: That's the way he plays.
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: He's one of those guys that plays with that kind
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: of motor and he makes those kind of extraordinary kind
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: of plays.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: All right, a couple more items from Rodney Terry before
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: we take another break here, And in terms of where
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: his team has grown and developed, one example this is
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Jason Kent. Kent really has started to play more of
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: late in large measure because of the injuries to Arthur Kalumba,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: but there was times when Jason Kent would see very
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: little action in games, and there is the frustration at
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: times of not being able to play. So Archie was
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: asked about how Jason Kent has dealt with the frustration
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: of missing time.
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: I think Bob has been It's been very difficult for him.
- 1:26:01Speaker 6: Anytime you have a youngster that's really playing in this
- 1:26:05Speaker 6: last season in college basketball and to get off to
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: a pretty good start of the year and still trying
- 1:26:12Speaker 6: to you know, etche out of his identity on this team.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: I think it's really hard.
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: I think he started out as a guy that we
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: talk could really stretch the four force. He had shown
- 1:26:23Speaker 6: some confidence doing that early in scrimmages where he made
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: you know it was three stretch the floor. It's always
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: been an elite cutter, you know. And then just getting
- 1:26:34Speaker 6: used to playing with the whole new team, new concepts,
- 1:26:37Speaker 6: new schemes of how he wanted to play with the
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: with the new team, and then now you gotta you
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: gotta sit for six weeks. That's tough, you know. It
- 1:26:47Speaker 6: was tough for him. It was tough for us because
- 1:26:49Speaker 6: he was an older player with the experience that that
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: that we missed having on the floor. So may he's
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: got to come back. We've already been playing. He's got
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: to try to edche out his identity again.
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: Of who he really needs to be for us.
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: It may not be the same that it was going
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: to particularly start the wait this season.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: Maybe we didn't need him.
- 1:27:09Speaker 6: To stretch the full force now now we need him
- 1:27:11Speaker 6: to be more of a flow guy for us that
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: you know, continues to be a ball mover, whether it's
- 1:27:18Speaker 6: moving the basketball what we call get action, step up streams,
- 1:27:22Speaker 6: just keeping us a good flow cutting you know, you're open,
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: your feet are set, no problem with your threes at
- 1:27:30Speaker 6: that point.
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: But it was it's been.
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: Tough for him because he's had to get in now
- 1:27:35Speaker 6: and have a new identity and have a new role
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: for us and really trying to.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: Be a start in his role. I think he's getting
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: more comfortable with that.
- 1:27:43Speaker 6: I think he showed a lot of confidence, you know,
- 1:27:46Speaker 6: a lot of a lot of improvement with that in
- 1:27:48Speaker 6: the Alabama game. Obviously people look at the scoring, but
- 1:27:52Speaker 6: I always look at other things that he does that
- 1:27:55Speaker 6: impacts winning, rebounding the basketball for us, giving a second
- 1:27:59Speaker 6: chance opportunity.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: Trying to give us.
- 1:28:01Speaker 6: A guy that can defend these physical forwards in this
- 1:28:05Speaker 6: league has also been a challenge in something that we
- 1:28:09Speaker 6: need to do for us as well.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: All Right, there's some more comments there from Rodney Terry
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: there from the media availability. We wrap up today's edition
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: of the program here on AM thirteen under the Zone
