- 0:10the Cincinnati Reds faced the New York Mets in
- 0:12a Thursday night game at Shea Stadium. This date
- 0:15is significant because it marked the final set
- 0:17of baseball games before the 1981 baseball player
- 0:20strike, which would last for nearly two months.
- 0:22The season resumed in August, and the league
- 0:24decided to split the season into two halves.
- 0:27Teams leading in the standings in each half were
- 0:29declared division winners and given a berth to
- 0:31the postseason. The Cincinnati Reds were managed
- 0:34by John McNamara, who was in his third year with
- 0:36the club. The Mets were managed by Joe Torre
- 0:39in what would be his last season with the team
- 0:41before leaving for Atlanta in 1982. In this game,
- 0:44the Reds sent their longtime ace, Tom Seaver,
- 0:47to the mound to face the Mets' Pat Zachary. This
- 0:49audio recording is from the Cincinnati Radio
- 0:51Broadcast featuring announcers Marty Brenneman
- 0:53and Joe Nuxhall. For Cincinnati, it's Collins
- 0:56in right field, Griffey in center field, Concepcion
- 0:59at shortstop. Foster in left, Dreesen at first
- 1:02base, Knight at third. With Oster at second,
- 1:05Nolan catching, and Sieber on the mound. For
- 1:08the match, to lead off in center field, Mookie
- 1:10Wilson. Bob Baylor will play shortstop in that
- 1:13second. Ellis Valentine in right field will hit
- 1:16third. Batting in the cleanup spot, left fielder
- 1:19Dave Kingman. Rusty Staub will play first base
- 1:22at fifth. Hitting number six at third base, Mike
- 1:26Covitz. Alex Trevino will catch and hit number
- 1:29seven. Batting eighth at second base, Doug Flynn.
- 1:33And batting ninth, the New York pitcher, right
- 1:35-hander, Pat Zachary. Right now from Shea Stadium
- 1:39in New York, our national anthem. Thank you.
- 3:25Again, going over the Mets batting order quickly.
- 3:27Wilson in center field, Baylor at shortstop,
- 3:29Valentine in right field, Kingman in left, Staub
- 3:32at first base, Cubbage at third, with Trevino
- 3:35catching, Flynn at second, and Zachary pitching.

- 4:02of the scheduled three -city eight -game Eastern
- 4:04Division road trip, the question on the tips
- 4:06of tongues of everybody, fans, players, management
- 4:09alike, will there be baseball after tonight as
- 4:13far as the major leagues are concerned? As we
- 4:16mentioned earlier during our pregame shows, three
- 4:18negotiating sessions have already taken place.
- 4:21At a downtown Manhattan hotel today, with another
- 4:25one having gotten underway about six minutes
- 4:28ago, where the idea, of course, is of burning
- 4:30a baseball strike that would begin tomorrow throughout
- 4:33the Major League. And I would imagine the feeling
- 4:37among many people close to the situation, or
- 4:39as close as you might be while not being there,
- 4:42although there were a number of players from
- 4:44a number of different teams who were at the negotiating
- 4:48sessions here in New York City today who feel
- 4:51that They will probably be negotiating throughout
- 4:53the night, much in the same fashion as was the
- 4:56case last year when a settlement was reached
- 4:58early in the morning to avoid a baseball strike
- 5:01then. And, Joe, I'm sure that is the hope and
- 5:03the prayer of us and everybody connected with
- 5:06baseball, certainly the fans first and foremost.
- 5:08They don't want to see baseball stop, and I don't
- 5:11think anybody else does either. Marty, I'm very
- 5:13sure that that is the absolute truth, that no
- 5:16one wants to see a strike in this great game.
- 5:20It's a game that the family enjoys, mom and dad
- 5:24bringing the youngsters to the ballpark. It would
- 5:28just be a shame if something should happen that
- 5:31there is a strike. And hopefully they'll be able
- 5:35to get this thing ironed out before tomorrow
- 5:37and we can continue on with the schedule. Because
- 5:40as we were talking to George, things are going
- 5:44right good for this ball club now. They're playing
- 5:46excellent baseball, doing the things that are
- 5:48needed to be done to win baseball games. If we
- 5:52need good pitching, the pitching's been outstanding.
- 5:54If we need some offense, the offense is able
- 5:57to... generate some runs, so the ball club is
- 6:00really playing excellent baseball, and hopefully
- 6:03we'll continue right on. You look at Pat Zachary,
- 6:06of course, Pat, as we mentioned, a 2 -2, one
- 6:09loss record against the Reds last year. He was
- 6:111 -1. He started four times against Cincinnati
- 6:16last year, beat them 2 -0 on July the 25th of
- 6:20last year when he went all the way, and he beat
- 6:23Paul Bosco on that game. The Reds beat Zach here
- 6:26on May the 7th. of last year. He pitched just
- 6:29three innings, and Tommy Hume picked up the win
- 6:32and relieved Zachary, the loser, and Tom Seaver,
- 6:36we pointed out, he only pitched once against
- 6:38the Mets last year. No decision. Tom worked eight
- 6:41innings in that game, allowing six innings. But
- 6:43we look back on Tom's last start, and it was
- 6:47a 9 -3 win over the Montreal Expos, and if you
- 6:51might remember, Tom was asked about the home
- 6:53run that Gary Carter hit in the first inning.
- 6:56And Tom said, well, you know, I felt that I was
- 6:59just doing kind of a mediocre slider. He said,
- 7:03I found out I better not do that anymore during
- 7:05the course of the game. And from that point on,
- 7:08the Expos rather scored one more run, and that
- 7:12came in the ninth inning when Raines tripled.
- 7:15They scored on a sacrifice bat off the bat of
- 7:18Mike Phillips. So, Tom, this fits very well since
- 7:22coming back off that five problem. Now Pat Zachary
- 7:27has finished his warm -up to catcher Alex Trevino,
- 7:29and it'll be Dave Collins to lead it off as normal
- 7:31for Cincinnati. He was a .313 batting average,
- 7:35a couple of home runs on the season, and a total
- 7:37of 17 runs batted in. So a former Red, Pat Zachary,
- 7:41pitching against a former Met, Tom Seaver, in
- 7:44the wind -up of three here at Chase Stadium.
- 7:47Zachary brings in the pitch. Collins bunts. Third
- 7:49base side. Picked up by Trevino. Throwing to
- 7:52first in the dirt. That's the rest. He sobbed.
- 7:54Digs it out. So the out in this game is underway.
- 7:59Collins really didn't get it out far enough along
- 8:01the third baseline. Trevino was able to go out
- 8:04and make the quick pickup. And although throwing
- 8:06low, the bounce was not really a short hop where
- 8:11it could create a great deal of problem for Stobb.
- 8:13He was able to make the play and Collins is out
- 8:15in the bunt attempt. So one away, and it's 2
- 8:18-3 if you're scoring with us. And here's center
- 8:20fielder Ken Griffey. Griffey batting .294 with
- 8:2716 RBIs and a home run. Zachary with a line,
- 8:32the kick and the pitch, and Kenny takes it high
- 8:33and away. Ball one. Zachary, the co -rookie pitcher
- 8:40of the year in the National League back in 1976
- 8:42when he was a 14 -game winner with the Reds along
- 8:45with a .274 Earned run average. He misses down
- 8:50low with that pitch. He's behind 2 -0. He and,
- 8:53at the time, San Diego relief pitcher Butch Metzger
- 8:55shared the award. Metzger has been out of Major
- 8:58League Baseball for a few years now. Zachary
- 9:04trying to win his sixth game of the season tonight,
- 9:07and he's in with a 2 -0 pitch, a call strike.
- 9:11Cincinnati remaining a game and a half behind
- 9:13Los Angeles with the... 2 -0 victory here last
- 9:16night. The Dodgers knocking off the St. Louis
- 9:21Cardinals on a three -hitter by Jerry Roy. Swung
- 9:23on, ripped into right field, and Ballantyne will
- 9:26have to play that ball on the bounce. Ken Griffey
- 9:29with a one -out single to right field. His fourth
- 9:31hit and eight times up in this series. One -out,
- 9:38one -on. The batter shortstop Dave Concepcion
- 9:41moved back into the number three slot in the
- 9:43batting order last night. He responded with an
- 9:46eighth -inning single to drive in the second
- 9:48and final run of the night for the Reds. His
- 9:5044th RBI trailing George Foster, the Major League
- 9:53leader, by two. And Concepcion batting .308.
- 9:59Stob, Flynn, Baylor, and Covidge at first, second,
- 10:02short, and third for New York as Zachary straightens
- 10:04up on the mound, pours it flayward, and Concepcion
- 10:07takes a strike. In the outfield, Kingman and
- 10:09left, Wilson in center, Ballantyne and right,
- 10:12and Trevino catching. Joe Torrey making still
- 10:15more changes in his lineup tonight in an effort
- 10:19to try and salvage a victory here. Zachary checking
- 10:23Griffey. Now steps off the pitching rubber and
- 10:26throws on to Rusty Staub. Our plate on fire is
- 10:29Lee Weier. Dutch Rennert is at first base, Charlie
- 10:32Williams at second, and Randy March at third.
- 10:36Reds have won the first two games by scores of
- 10:398 -4 and 2 -0. The pitch inside. One ball and
- 10:43one strike. And we might point out the 12 strikeout
- 10:47that Mario Soto had in the wind last night. That's
- 10:50a high for a National League pitcher in 1981.
- 10:54And, of course, it was his first shutout of the
- 10:56season. One ball, one strike, one out. Griffey
- 11:02at first base. We're in the top half of the first
- 11:04inning. Pat Zachary again will lob one over to
- 11:07first base. Dodgers and the Cardinals close out
- 11:11the series at Busch Stadium tonight. Fernando
- 11:14Valenzuela will be going for his 10th win of
- 11:17the season against right -hander Silvio Martinez.
- 11:19Each of those teams has won a game. Zachary with
- 11:25a long pause, and now Concepcion backs out of
- 11:27the batter's box. Zachary coming set just a little
- 11:31bit too long to suit the batter. Back coming
- 11:39to the Mets on the 15th of June, 1977. So he
- 11:43will have been a New York Met exactly four years,
- 11:46four days from now, as Tom Seaver will have been
- 11:49a Cincinnati Red. There's another throw to first.
- 11:53Zachary working very deliberately here in the
- 11:56first inning. George Foster on deck. Concepcion
- 12:07up eight times in the series, two hits and a
- 12:09run batted in. He grounds it off the leg of Zachary,
- 12:12rolling between second and third. That's going
- 12:14to be a base hit. That ball appeared to hit Zachary
- 12:18somewhere up around the right thigh or right
- 12:20side and tear him over between second and third
- 12:23base. The ball definitely finding the hole between
- 12:26third baseman coverage and shortstop Baylor.
- 12:31Getting Zachary on the right thigh, or the side,
- 12:33upper side of the right leg, and that'll be an
- 12:35infield hit for Concepcion, with Griffey going
- 12:37on to second. So the Reds have two men on, a
- 12:40man out, and they're a top run producer, and
- 12:42George Foster is to play. Foster's had some kind
- 12:49of series here in New York. Five hits and nine
- 12:51times up. A home run, a double, a triple, a couple
- 12:56of singles, and he's driven in two runs. He's
- 12:58now batting. 300 on the season. There's a pitch
- 13:02to him, and Foster takes a breaking ball for
- 13:04a strike. After Collins was thrown out on the
- 13:13butt attempt, Griffey lines a single to right.
- 13:17Concepcion reaches on the infield hit. The infield
- 13:20looking for the ground ball as Zachary kicks
- 13:22and fires, and Foster swings it a pitch away
- 13:25behind two strikes. Reds have three .300 hitters
- 13:33in their lineup, led by Collins at .313, then
- 13:37Concepcion at .308, Foster at .300. Ken Griffey
- 13:41on the rise. He came in batting .294. That average
- 13:45shoots up as a result of the base hit. And Joe
- 13:48Nolan behind the plate batting .288. Of course,
- 13:52Danny Dreesen has also been swinging a hot bat
- 13:54here in this series. Ronnie Oster at 293. So
- 14:01Cincinnati continues to do everything right of
- 14:05late. Two -strike pitch. Foster takes strike
- 14:09three. George Foster caught looking as Ackrey
- 14:16rings up a strikeout as first of the night. He'll
- 14:19pitch now to first baseman Danny Dreesen. Trevino
- 14:23going out to the mound to talk with Ackrey for
- 14:25a moment. Dreesen batting 210. Always interesting
- 14:29things you see at a ballpark, Marty, in the play
- 14:33of a game. On that particular pitch, Torino wanted
- 14:36the ball up and in. And Zach threw it down and
- 14:40away. Whether he meant to do that or not. Sometimes
- 14:45you get away with it and sometimes you don't.
- 14:47Maybe they tricked George. Here's Danny Dreesen
- 14:51now with two outs. Dreesen takes it in the dirt
- 14:53for a ball. 2 -10 the batting average, as we
- 14:56pointed out, but he's batted 533 in the last
- 14:59four games, going 8 for 15 with two doubles,
- 15:02two home runs, and five RBIs, and it would be
- 15:05a safe statement to make right now that Danny
- 15:08Dreesen is on top of his game. Even in making
- 15:11outs, especially last night when he went 1 for
- 15:144, he hit some balls awfully hard. Up high, two
- 15:19balls and no strike. Griffey's at second, Concepcion
- 15:21is at first, two outs. On deck for the Reds,
- 15:32third baseman Ray Knight. Right -hander looking
- 15:36back at second, brings it up there, and he's
- 15:38behind three balls and no strikes. So Zach, a
- 15:42pitch away from loading him up for Ray Knight.
- 15:47Joe Torre putting Baylor in at shortstop, replacing
- 15:50Tavares for this game, replacing UB Brooks with
- 15:54Mike Cubbage at third base. Rusty Staub getting
- 15:57a start at first for the second straight night
- 15:59and Trevino behind the plate rather than Stearns.
- 16:02There's strike one call. Three and one. Valentine
- 16:12deep and straight away and right. Wilson shading
- 16:15Dreesen to pull and setter as is Kingman and
- 16:17left. From Zachary to Dreesen, that's ball four
- 16:21and that loads the bases. Griffey moves to third,
- 16:24Concepcion to second, Danny with a walk. He's
- 16:27heading down to first base, and here's Knight.
- 16:32Knight batting .246, five home runs, 18 RBIs,
- 16:40only one for eight in the first two games here
- 16:42at Shea with an RBI. That came on a two -base
- 16:46hit here on Tuesday night. Knight waving the
- 16:53bat around as Zachary works out of the windup.
- 16:56He pitches, and Knight swings and drives it into
- 16:58right field, backing on it is Valentine. He's
- 17:00there, and he makes the catch. A couple of steps
- 17:03short of the warning track to end the inning.
- 17:05Cincinnati with a first -inning threat, but comes
- 17:07away with no runs, two hits, three left. After
- 17:10a half -inning of play and a wrap -up of three
- 17:12in New York, the Reds nothing, and the Mets are
- 17:14coming to back. Tom Seaver left the Reds dugout
- 17:17along the third baseline, and as he went to the
- 17:20Shea Stadium now, the move that he has made many,
- 17:23many times throughout his Major League career,
- 17:25he received a standing ovation from the Mets
- 17:29fans. So while he's been gone almost 40 years,
- 17:32they remember Tom Seaver with fond memories for
- 17:36having some just unbelievable years while pitching
- 17:40for this New York Mets team. He's having a fine
- 17:43year with the Reds in 81, six wins and a loss
- 17:45with a .208 ERA. And he's ready to face the center
- 17:49fielder and leadoff batter, rookie Mookie Wilson.
- 17:53Here's a pitch to him, and he shows the butt,
- 17:55takes it away, strike one. So talk about Sieber's
- 17:59last start Saturday when he came back after being
- 18:01down ten days with that left thigh problem. Wilson
- 18:05fouls it off. Gave up the two -run homer to Carter
- 18:08in the first inning and then shut out the Expos
- 18:11until they got that ninth -inning run. He went
- 18:13the distance to win his sixth game of the season.
- 18:16The 2 -0 -8 ERA is fourth best in the National
- 18:19League. Wilson, strike three. Started around.
- 18:25It didn't make any difference. The pitch was
- 18:26there, and Seaver has himself a strikeout. That
- 18:33brings up shortstop Bob Baylor. Baylor has seen
- 18:38action in each of the first two games as a latecomer
- 18:40and has had two hits and three times up on the
- 18:43year, batting .255 against National League pitching
- 18:46with six runs batted in. Former American leaguer
- 18:53Baylor with a ball of Orioles and the Toronto
- 18:54Blue Jays. He takes it low a ball. Drees and
- 18:58Oster, Concepcion and Knight. First, second,
- 19:00short, and third defensively for the Reds. Foster,
- 19:02Griffey, Collins, left center and right in the
- 19:04outfield. Behind the plate, Joe Nolan. And it's
- 19:07two balls and no strikes on a pitch in on Bob
- 19:09Baylor. After two in Montreal, the Expos lead
- 19:15the Atlanta Braves 2 -0. Montreal trying to sweep
- 19:18that series. And this afternoon, the Cubs beat
- 19:20the Giants 6 -1. Swung on, fly ball, headed toward
- 19:23Collins and Wright. Two out. Here's the right
- 19:33fielder, Ellis Valentine. The Cubs winning today
- 19:37have now run off five victories in their last
- 19:40six games and sent the Giants down to their fifth
- 19:43consecutive defeat. Chicago came out smoking
- 19:46against Tom Griffin, who was unable to survive
- 19:49the first inning in the wake of a four -run outburst.
- 19:52The only Giant run coming on a sixth -inning
- 19:55home run by Joe Morgan is fifth of the season,
- 19:57while Cub catcher Jody Davis had his first Major
- 20:00League home run, and Hector Cruz hit his seventh
- 20:02of the season. One ball and no strikes on Ellis
- 20:06Valentine. Randy Mars got the win. Griffin took
- 20:13the loss. Tommy Boggs against Steve Rogers up
- 20:16at Montreal tonight. In there for strike one
- 20:19call, and Seaver with Valentine, a ball and a
- 20:21strike. Two outs. Nothing happening in a scoreless
- 20:25first inning. Swung on and bounced to shortstop.
- 20:30Concepcion to his left for the pickup, and he
- 20:32shoots him down. The Mets are out of order, and
- 20:36after one completed chase, Cincinnati nothing,
- 20:38New York nothing. In the American League tonight,
- 20:44six games on the schedule. Kansas City and Toronto
- 20:48have already started, and it's 1 -0 Royals at
- 20:50the end of an inning. Paul Splittorf against
- 20:52Dave Steve. Texas plays in Milwaukee. New York
- 20:56at Chicago. Detroit at Minnesota. Baltimore in
- 20:58Seattle. And Boston at California. Ronnie Oster
- 21:03to lead things off in the second for Cincinnati.
- 21:05The Reds loaded the bases in the first inning
- 21:07against Zachary on hits by Griffey and Concepcion.
- 21:10And then a two -odd walk to Danny Dreesen, but
- 21:13the inning ended when Zachary got Knight on a
- 21:18fly ball to fairly deep right field on Ellis
- 21:20Valentine. Ronnie Oster batting .293, looking
- 21:23for his first hit here in New York. He's 0 for
- 21:259. Zachary pitches. Oster takes it inside, ball
- 21:32one. Swung on, ground ball, right side. There's
- 21:46Doug Flynn on the outfield grass to make the
- 21:48play, and he throws him out. Oster grounds out
- 21:55second to first. The batter will be Ketcher Nolan.
- 21:58Poster day with the Reds is pick your poster
- 22:00day this year. Everybody 21 and under gets to
- 22:03choose one of the seven posters in the Reds poster
- 22:05series. The on -hand Sunday, June 28th, the Reds
- 22:08against the Braves on poster day at Riverfront.
- 22:12288 batting average for Joe Nolan with a home
- 22:14run and nine runs batted in. Left -handed batter.
- 22:20Line drive, right center field, a hit. Over to
- 22:23cut it off is Dallas Valentine. Nolan takes a
- 22:26turn, and that's hit number three for Cincinnati.
- 22:28So with one out, Tom Seaver will probably be
- 22:32up trying to move Nolan into scoring position
- 22:35for Dave Collins, and Seaver again gets a big
- 22:37welcome from the Shea Stadium baseball. Mike
- 22:47Covington to step off the grass at third and
- 22:49now coming as Zachary pauses, delivers, receiver
- 22:52squares to Bunt, takes it away, ball one. Zachary,
- 22:59a 6 '5", string bean, 175 -pounder out of Waco,
- 23:03Texas. This one, Bunt at first base side, rusty
- 23:10stop, makes a play, kicks it around, recovers,
- 23:13and now throws on to Doug Flynn at first base.
- 23:163 -4 sacrifice receiver. With Nolan moving to
- 23:20second, here's Dave Collins for the second time.
- 23:23Out Alex Trevino to Rusty Stubb on a bunt attempt
- 23:26in the first inning. We'll pause for station
- 23:28identification on the Cincinnati Reds baseball
- 23:30network. So why do we call Jim Sager the Beast
- 23:34of Baltimore? Well, you can draw your own conclusions
- 23:37each and every weekday evening from 6 until midnight
- 23:39here at K95. It's the Jim Sager Show, the Beast
- 23:42of Baltimore at K95, WHOK -FM. Lancaster. Collins
- 23:50with Nolan at second, two away, and a scoreless
- 23:53game in the second inning. Right -hander kicks
- 23:59and throws, and Collins takes it up and in ball
- 24:02one. Now the one over the plate. That's inside
- 24:20and low. Two balls and no strikes on Dave Collins.
- 24:35They said now we'll get a first run of the night
- 24:37home as Nolan takes a lead at second. Zachary
- 24:40behind and pitching. Collins taking, and that's
- 24:43strike one called just below the belt. Two balls
- 24:45and a strike. If we do not have the work stop,
- 24:49the Jerez are scheduled to open up a three -game
- 24:52series in Montreal tomorrow night. Bruce Perenny
- 24:54against Charlie Lee. Saturday night it will be
- 24:57Mike Lacoste against Ray Burris. And Sunday afternoon,
- 25:00to close things out there, Frank Pastore will
- 25:02duel Scott Sanderson. 2 -1 pitch. High and outside,
- 25:07ball three. In the event there is a strike, we
- 25:10might inform all our stations as well as our
- 25:12fans along the network line that... Joe and I
- 25:15will be doing a one -hour show, a talk show,
- 25:18beginning tomorrow night on our flagship station
- 25:20in Cincinnati and on our stations along the Red
- 25:23Baseball Network, beginning at 8 .05 Cincinnati
- 25:26time. That is ball four. Collins flips it out
- 25:31of the way and goes on down to first base as
- 25:33Zachary has issued his second walk. That would
- 25:35be a Monday through Friday nightly show, 8 .05
- 25:39to 9 o 'clock, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 25:42and Friday night. for as long as the strike would
- 25:45last. And this Saturday and Sunday, Joe and I
- 25:48are scheduled to be in Wichita to broadcast a
- 25:51couple of games involving our AAA Farm Club,
- 25:53the Indianapolis Indians. We would be on the
- 25:56air at 8 o 'clock on Saturday night with a pregame
- 25:58show, game time at 8 .30 Cincinnati time, and
- 26:017 o 'clock on Saturday night with a pregame show.
- 26:05Game time for that one would be 7 .30. Two men
- 26:09on, two men out. Second inning. Griffey with
- 26:12a hard smash to shortstop, but Baylor plays and
- 26:14throws to Flynn for the force out, and Zachary
- 26:16gets out of trouble for the second straight inning.
- 26:19No runs, one hit, two left. The Reds have stranded
- 26:22five in the first two innings, and after one
- 26:25and a half, Cincinnati and New York no score.
- 26:28Get set for some exciting baseball coming up
- 26:30at Riverfront. The Reds will be back home next
- 26:32Wednesday for the start of the biggest homestand
- 26:34of the year, 13 games and a 12 -day stretch.
- 26:36The Mets, the Phillies, the Cardinals, and the
- 26:38Braves will all be in town. While we have them
- 26:41in, let's take a closer look at that Philly series.
- 26:43It starts Friday, June 19th with a 7 .35 game.
- 26:467 o 'clock game on Saturday the 20th, and then
- 26:48the weekend winds up Sunday afternoon, June 21st.
- 26:52It's going to be a fun weekend. The Phillies
- 26:53are always a favorite opponent at Riverfront
- 26:56Stadium with the likes of Pete Rose and Mike
- 26:58Schmidt, Larry Boas, Steve Carlton. So make your
- 27:02plans now to be on hand for all the action and
- 27:04purchase your tickets in advance. Tom Seaver
- 27:09standing behind the mound, waiting for Dave Kingman
- 27:11to settle in. 13 home runs to lead the New York
- 27:15Mets in the power department with 31 RBIs and
- 27:18a 219 batting average. Kingman batting in the
- 27:23series, two hits and eight times up, and both
- 27:25hits came last night. He takes it low, ball one.
- 27:29In fact, Kingman had two hits, and Mookie Wilson
- 27:33had two. They were four of the six that the Mets
- 27:36collected off of Mario Soto. Kingman takes ball
- 27:43two. Two balls and no strikes. Been pretty consistent
- 27:49in this series. Every time Kingman's been to
- 27:51the play where the base is empty, which has been
- 27:53often. Ronnie Oster goes to the third base side
- 27:56of second along with Concepcion and Knight. 2
- 28:00-0 pitch. Kingman with a high, deep drive to
- 28:03left field. And Foster at the wall. It's gone.
- 28:09The 14th of the season. And the New York Mets,
- 28:13for the first time in this series lead, it's
- 28:171 -0. Beaver got behind 2 -0 and had to come
- 28:27in on him, and Dingman took care of it. Homering
- 28:30into the Cincinnati bullpen in the left field,
- 28:33beyond the left field fence, and the Mets are
- 28:36up 1 -0. Marty, that was a fastball right out
- 28:41over the plate, and I think Cobb just more or
- 28:43less challenging Kingman and didn't quite work.
- 28:46Missed by about 10 feet. Here's Rusty Staub.
- 28:53Staub takes a strike. The first time in this
- 29:00series the Mets have led in the game. Staub hits
- 29:04a hard smash, and Concepcion cannot get a base
- 29:07at the center field. Now back -to -back hits
- 29:13in the second for the Mets. A home run by Kingman,
- 29:16a single by Staub, the batter. Third baseman
- 29:18Mike Cubbett. Cubbett batting .233 with three
- 29:28RBIs, up twice in the first two games with a
- 29:31hit. Let's have the Astros in for a series scheduled
- 29:46to begin here tomorrow night. And Houston is
- 29:47already in town. They finished their series in
- 29:49Philadelphia last night. And staying in the same
- 29:53hotel the Reds are staying in in Manhattan. Saw
- 29:56a lot of them around the hotel today. Pitches
- 29:58in for a strike. Of course, the Phillies are
- 30:01off tonight before meeting the Atlanta Braves
- 30:04in Philadelphia tomorrow evening. If baseball
- 30:07is continued, Pete Rose will have the shot going
- 30:09into that game of becoming the all -time nationally
- 30:13career hit leader after tying Stan Musial's record
- 30:15last night with a first -inning single off Nolan
- 30:17Ryan. One ball and one strike on the left -handed
- 30:22batting coverage. One run is in. Rusty stopped.
- 30:30Stationed down at first base. He had a ground
- 30:33single at center. Nobody out. Number 41 to the
- 30:42plate, and coverage takes it inside. Two balls
- 30:44and a strike. Dave Kingman with home run number
- 30:5614 of the season. That ties him for National
- 30:59League leadership with Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt.
- 31:06Coverage ahead on the count as Seaver kicks and
- 31:08fires, and there's ball three. Alex Trevino on
- 31:24deck. Danny Dreesen playing behind a runner's
- 31:26stop at first base. Swung on and fouled away.
- 31:34Straight back of the plate and back up into the
- 31:36third deck here. Mario Soto joining Seaver last
- 31:49night with a victory as six -game winners on
- 31:52the Cincinnati pitching staff. Seaver after his
- 31:56252nd career win. He and Bob Gibson are tied
- 32:00for 30th place on the all -time victory list.
- 32:02Runner going. But Cabbage fouls it out of play
- 32:05down the left field line. Of course, Bob Gibson
- 32:07here, he is now a member of the Mets coaching
- 32:09staff. The man who Fieber is tied with. And Tom
- 32:14two wins away from Carl Hubble, who is next in
- 32:17line in 29th place with a career victory total
- 32:20of 253. But the Mets are leading 1 -0. And a
- 32:30three -ball, two -strike count on Mike Kovach.
- 32:32Risa now is on the back. Stopped breaking. The
- 32:34pitch is swung on. Ripped into right field. Collins
- 32:37going back and now comes in a bit and moves off
- 32:40to his left to make the catch. Back to first
- 32:43goes Dodd. There's one away and here's the catcher
- 32:46Trevino. Trevino batting 280. He's knocked in
- 32:52eight runs. First time we've seen him in the
- 32:54series. Fine -handed batter and a young man that
- 33:09a lot of clubs have shown a lot of interest in
- 33:10over the last couple of years. He's regarded
- 33:13as a pretty good catcher and can swing that bat
- 33:15reasonably well. He lines one for a hit in the
- 33:18center. Griffey plays it on the bounce as Staub
- 33:20moves to second base and Seaver having a relatively
- 33:23unimpressive second inning. Home run by Kingman,
- 33:27base hit by Staub, a well -hit ball to right.
- 33:30The Collins caught off the bat of coverage and
- 33:32now a first -pitch line drive single to center
- 33:34field from Alex Trevino. Doug Flynn at the plate.
- 33:47Flynn checking in at 243 with a home run and
- 33:5011 runs batted in. 0 for 7 so far in the series.
- 33:53Takes the ball low. Tom Zachary now emerging
- 34:05from the New York dugout, moving to the on -deck
- 34:07circle. That's a check swing strike. Doug came
- 34:12out of the gate very hot when the season unfolded.
- 34:16He was up among the hit leaders for quite a while,
- 34:18but has of late simply been struggling at the
- 34:22plate. His batting average has plummeted all
- 34:24the way down to its current .243. Stopped the
- 34:30lead runner at second with Trevino at first.
- 34:32One away. Seaver to the plate, Flynn swings,
- 34:36fly ball, right field. Collins almost in his
- 34:39tracks, makes the catch. Staub loves to go to
- 34:43third, and Concepcion cuts off the throw, tumbling
- 34:46over Staub at second base and almost caught him
- 34:49coming back into the bag. Maybe decoying Staub
- 34:55pretty well until the last second, hoping to
- 34:57maybe grab that throw from Collins and put the
- 35:00tag on him before he got back to second. The
- 35:07Zachary at the plate with two outs. Pat batting
- 35:18.238 this season. He's had five hits all singles.
- 35:21He's knocked in two runs. Ball to him. This club
- 35:35now with three hits in the game. Pitcher against
- 35:41pitcher in the second, and Zachary swings and
- 35:43misses. One ball and one strike. Checking the
- 35:56pitch. Strike two, swinging. Tell you, aside
- 36:00from the time when Pete Rose was on his 44 -game
- 36:03hitting streak, there probably are almost as
- 36:06many media people right now in New York from
- 36:08the sports world and from all over the country
- 36:10as a result of the possible player strikes than
- 36:13at any other time on the trips that we have made
- 36:16in here over the last seven, eight years. Two
- 36:20balls, two strikes. They were trying to get Zachary
- 36:29at end of second for New York. He pitches, and
- 36:32Zachary takes strike three, and that's the inning.
- 36:35Tom's second strikeout, a scoring inning for
- 36:37the Mets. One run, three hits. They leave a pair.
- 36:41And after two complete, New York won the Reds
- 36:44nothing. Dave Concepcion will lead off round
- 36:46number three for Cincinnati as the Reds enter
- 36:48their third inning, trailing New York one to
- 36:50nothing. And here with a play -by -play, Joe
- 36:52Nuttall. Thank you, Marty. Davey Singel off the
- 36:55right side of Pat Zachary in the first inning.
- 36:58Dave, a .308 batting average. Four all -runs
- 37:03and 44 RBIs. Dave, second to George Foster in
- 37:07the National League in RBIs. George leads the
- 37:10league with 46. Right to that three -hit top,
- 37:14Zachary, through the first two innings. And stranded
- 37:18with five baserunners. Dave Concepcion leads
- 37:23it off. At Montreal, the Expos leading the Braves
- 37:282 -0, third inning. The American League, Toronto
- 37:32leading Kansas City 4 -2. Kansas City at bat
- 37:36at the top of the fourth. Zachary ready to work
- 37:40to Concepcion, and his breaking pitch misses
- 37:42outside. Only one other game to be played tonight.
- 37:48That's Los Angeles at St. Louis. 1 -0 pitch.
- 37:55A half -swing foul by Concepcion, and it evens
- 37:59it 1 -1. Fernando Valenzuela will go for the
- 38:03Dodgers and Silvio Martinez for the Cardinals.
- 38:10Zachary even to Concepcion, 1 -1. Foster on deck,
- 38:16and that'll be Danny Dreesen. Zachary delivers
- 38:25the 1 -1. Outside, two balls to strike. Pat has
- 38:29walked 37 batters in 73 innings coming into tonight's
- 38:35game, and then struck out 41. The 2 -1 delivery.
- 38:42Swung on and a one bouncer to coverage at third.
- 38:45And his throw on to stop. One away. On down and
- 38:52George Foster steps in. George call out on strikes
- 38:56in the first inning. Back for his last start.
- 39:04He lost to the Houston Astros 6 -2. In Houston
- 39:09when he allowed ten hits and six runs. In three
- 39:14in the third inning. Walked four in that stretch.
- 39:22Foster steps in. Base is empty in and out. The
- 39:25pitch. George swings at a breaking ball and chops
- 39:28it foul at the plate. Danny Dreesen. Schedule
- 39:40a bat next. Outfield playing George about straight
- 39:45away. Foster backs away from the plate. Back
- 39:50in and Trevino. Bison's assigned. They all want
- 39:55the foster. Fastball at the knees in the outside
- 39:57corner. And Zachary in front. 0 -2 to George.
- 40:12The 0 -2. Swung on and line fouled by third base
- 40:17coach Russ Nixon. Russ having to turn to get
- 40:19out of the way of it. Count holes. No balls.
- 40:25Two strikes. Zachary has the sign. Again, the
- 40:410 -2. Change -up swung on and missed, and that's
- 40:44strikeout number two for Zachary, and both times
- 40:48it has been George Foster. So two away, and Danny
- 40:52Drees in the batting. Danny walked in the first
- 40:57inning to load the bases. Before Ray Knight hit
- 41:00a fly ball to Valentine in right field to end
- 41:02the inning. And batting average up to .210. He
- 41:12looks at a strike from Zachary. Zachary delivers
- 41:24the 0 -1. Harrison takes it high and outside.
- 41:27Not even as a ball of strength. It's on the way.
- 41:39It's on and foul down the left side. That will
- 41:42settle back into the seat. Down holding of the
- 41:47ball. Two strikes to Drees. Manning with five
- 41:50all runs and 21 RBIs. Zachary again the one -two.
- 41:59That's been the third change. Two balls, two
- 42:02strikes. Knackery checking with Trevino. The
- 42:152 -2. Hung on and a fly ball hit into left center
- 42:19field. Moving over Mookie Wilson. He's there
- 42:22and makes the play. And for the first time in
- 42:24the game, the Reds out in order. Middle of the
- 42:27third. New York 1, Cincinnati nothing. For New
- 42:32York in the bottom half of the third, the top
- 42:34of the order, Wilson, Baylor, and Valentine to
- 42:37face Don Seaver. New York getting around to the
- 42:40second inning when Dave Kingman hit his 14th
- 42:43ball of the year on a 2 -0 pitch. The ball just
- 42:47dropping over the fence and left field into the
- 42:50Cincinnati bullpen. A Mookie Wilson leads it
- 42:57off. Wilson called out on strike, leading off
- 43:00the game for New York. Deaver delivers. Wilson
- 43:11takes. High and outside of ball. I'm back with
- 43:22a 1 -0. Wilson swings and doesn't get it. 1 -1.
- 43:32Kingman now tied with Mike Smith for the league
- 43:36lead in all runs at 14. Low curve hangs high
- 43:40to Wilson. Two and one to come. A wide pitch.
- 43:48Wilson takes it inside. Three balls to strike.
- 43:59Three -one delivery. Wilson takes strike two
- 44:02call. A full count now to Mookie Wilson. Payoff
- 44:12on the way. Wilson swings and fouls back to the
- 44:16screen. Mike Lum, a good day yesterday for the
- 44:25Cubs in that second game win, 7 -4 over the Giants.
- 44:30Mike went 3 -3 with a home run. Pitch on the
- 44:35way. Wilson swings and rounds it up the middle
- 44:38right between Severs' legs and on into center
- 44:40field. Bolton makes the wide turn, and that's
- 44:44the fourth end of the game for New York. Bob
- 44:47Severs. And I bring Bob Baylor to the plate.
- 44:55Baylor in the first inning, a fly ball to Collins
- 45:00in right field. Wilson has ten stolen bases.
- 45:11He has been caught four times. The receiver throws
- 45:14over to first. Again, the stretch and another
- 45:18throw there, and Wilson again back. Ellis Valentine
- 45:21on deck. Receiver has struck out two. Another
- 45:28throw to first, and this one sounds like it hit
- 45:31Wilson in the back. Mookie getting up and holding
- 45:36his lower back. Actually, the ball hit him, or
- 45:40Wilson would still be running. Tom sets again,
- 45:53throws the first, and again, Wilson back safely.
- 45:57Bob Baylor at the plate. Baylor a .250 batting
- 46:01average. Stretching the pitch, Wilson goes. Here's
- 46:05Nolan Stroh, and it's not near a time. Wilson
- 46:08has his 11th stolen base for the year. The Mookie
- 46:13had a good jump, and he got down there quickly.
- 46:26The count to Bob Baylor, 0 -1. That's such a
- 46:30called strike. Baylor's sticking his bat out
- 46:33over the plate, trying to distract Joe Nolan.
- 46:42Wilson now at second. Beaver has the sign from
- 46:46Nolan to stretch the pitch. Baylor punts third
- 46:50-base side. The ball rolling. Buff of the ball
- 46:52to Beaver. It's going quickly to Ron Oster. And
- 46:55Ron takes it on the long hop to retire Baylor.
- 46:59Good play by Tom Beaver and Ron Oster. Treaded
- 47:04Baylor with a sacrifice. He is out 1 -4. Milton
- 47:08Wilson moves on to third base. The batter is
- 47:13Ellis Valentine. Valentine grounded to Concepcion
- 47:17in the first inning. Dave Kingman moves on deck.
- 47:25Well, that is Joe Torre trying to put another
- 47:28run on the scoreboard here tonight. Beaver works
- 47:32for the windup, and Valentine swings and pops
- 47:35it up. Shallow into center field. Griffey waiting
- 47:39on it, and... And tanking as Wilson, he'll score
- 47:42easily, and it's a two -to -nothing ballgame.
- 47:45A very high pop into center field, and Wilson
- 47:48scores easily. Valentine gets his 17th RBI of
- 47:52the year, and the Mets lead it two to nothing.
- 48:02Having Dave Kingman on the plate, Dave leading
- 48:07off the second inning. Homered into the red bullpen,
- 48:11his 14th of the year. He rewinds and delivers,
- 48:17and Kingman takes high and inside a ball. Two
- 48:24out, the Mets have scored a run here in the third,
- 48:27lead it two to nothing. Tom delivers. England
- 48:37swings and misses a pitch down, and the count
- 48:40evens 1 -1. 1 -1 on the way. Aye. Two alls to
- 48:58strike. That's Enfield. Ulster to the left of
- 49:08second base. Outfield pulled around to the left.
- 49:122 -1 delivery. High and inside. Three balls to
- 49:16strike. 3 -1 the count to Dave Kingman. Seaver
- 49:34delivers the 3 -1, and Kingman takes it. On inside,
- 49:39a ball, and that's the first walk issued by Tom
- 49:42Seaver. Kingman moves on to first base, and the
- 49:46batter is Rusty Stobbs. Stobbs single to center
- 49:49in the second inning. York leading 2 -0. Kingman
- 50:02at first base leads. This throw over to first,
- 50:05and Dave steps back. Stretching the pitch, and
- 50:16a slider misses inside the stop. Ball one. Mike
- 50:28Cubbage, the on -deck batter. 1 -0 to stop. Let's
- 50:32see. Tate's blowing inside again. And it's two
- 50:35balls, no strike. Well, the Yankees score in
- 50:42the first inning of Chicago. White Sox at bat
- 50:47in the bottom half of the first. There goes Kingman.
- 50:50The pitch is swung on and missed. The throw down,
- 50:52not time. And Kingman has the stolen base. Dave
- 50:56with a running jump. For Kingman, that is his
- 51:03second stolen base of the year. On count two
- 51:07and one, the rest is stopped. They were looking
- 51:21to Nolan for the sign. He has it. The stretch
- 51:24and the pitch. Stop takes strike two on the outside
- 51:28corner. The count evens two and two. Kingman
- 51:40the second lead. Dave Watson stole second. Seaver
- 51:45to the plate. Stomp takes it inside. Full count.
- 52:00Tom waiting on the side. Takes one off. Now the
- 52:04stretch. And he steps back off the pitching rubber.
- 52:16Tom ready. And delivers the payoff. Tom swings
- 52:20and fouls it off to the left and back into the
- 52:24seat. Tom holding. Three and two. Good crowd
- 52:33here at Shea Stadium tonight. Last night we had
- 52:3710 ,352, and Tuesday night, 13 ,331. Again, the
- 52:453 -2, swung on, ground ball, foul off the first
- 52:49baseline. Ball not missing by much, but Dutch
- 52:54runner at the first base on fire holding up his
- 52:57hands right away. Tom holds the three balls,
- 53:08two strikes to Rusty Stott. He were ready. And
- 53:24again, the 3 -2. Stott swings, fouls this from
- 53:27straight back. Ball hitting the glass behind
- 53:30home plate and bounding all the way out to the
- 53:33mound where Tom Seaver picks it up. On set and
- 53:47delivered. Cobb swings and a fly ball in the
- 53:50right field. Waiting on it, moving in is Collins,
- 53:53and that's the inning. The Mets pick up another
- 53:56run in the inning on one hit. But no errors,
- 54:00and a runner left on at the end of three. New
- 54:03York 2, Cincinnati nothing. Ray Knight will lead
- 54:08it off as the Reds bat in the fourth inning.
- 54:10Ray in the first. A fly ball to the right, but
- 54:13the base is bloated. Ray hitting .246, five home
- 54:16runs and 18 RBIs. Now Indianapolis at Oklahoma
- 54:21City tonight after one inning no score. Charlie
- 54:24Liebrand on the mound for the Indians. Charlie
- 54:27has won one and lost five. Zachary delivers and
- 54:32Knight takes a strike on the outside corner.
- 54:35Meanwhile at St. Louis, George Hendrick, a two
- 54:39-run homer in the first inning off Valenzuela.
- 54:42The Cardinals 2 -0 after 1. Zachary delivers
- 54:49the 0 -1. Knight swings and grounds it into deep
- 54:52short. Cubbett's backhand drops the ball, and
- 54:55Ray Knight will get a base hit out of that one.
- 55:00Cubbett was there, had it in his glove, and ready
- 55:02to throw. Make that Baylor, Bob Baylor, the shortstop.
- 55:08Cubbett to the third base. On infield single
- 55:11for Ray Knight, the fourth of the game for the
- 55:14Reds, and that'll bring Ron Oster to the plate.
- 55:16Ron grounded to Doug Flynn in the second inning,
- 55:20leading off. Oster a .293 batting average with
- 55:24a home run, 25 RBIs. Zachary sets and delivers,
- 55:31and Oster swings and hits one well in the right
- 55:33center field, and that's going to get to that
- 55:35one. Knight around second, a bounce is off the
- 55:37wall. Right to third. Knight being waved in.
- 55:40He's going to score. Oster on his way to third
- 55:42to throw. He's not in time, and it's a two -to
- 55:45-one ball game. Fifth triple of the year for
- 55:48Ron Oster. He is 26 by the eye, and Barretta
- 55:52back in it just like that. Ray Knight scoring
- 55:56all the way from first base, and Oster with a
- 55:59headlong slide into third, and he represents
- 56:03the tying run of Joe Dole of the batter. Five
- 56:11hits now for the Reds in the game. Okay, Wilson
- 56:21feeling the ball off the fence. Going to Bob
- 56:26Baylor, but the throw a bit high. Ostrand safely
- 56:32at third. A stretch by Zachary of the pitch.
- 56:36And Nolan swings, sends at the center field.
- 56:38A base hit. He's two for two, and it's a tie
- 56:40ball game. Oh, three straight hits here in the
- 56:47inning. Ties it up. That'll bring Tom Seaver
- 56:50to the plate. Tom sacrificed in the second inning,
- 56:53moving Nolan to second base. Joe Nolan gets his
- 56:59tenth RBI of the year. Reds tie it up at 2 -2.
- 57:13Right now, Rusty Stobb talking with Pat Zachary
- 57:16at the mound. He heads back to first base. Cabbage,
- 57:19the New York third baseman, already on the grass,
- 57:22looking for the punt. Stretched by Zachary, and
- 57:27the pitch. Steverer punts first base side, but
- 57:30foul. Four -five, two -to -two. No one at first
- 57:40base, nobody out. So over to first, Nolan steps
- 57:56back. The Reds as a team with 24 or 33 sacrificed
- 58:10buttons. Tom squares the button, swings away
- 58:14as Stobb started toward all and then checked
- 58:20when he saw Tom going back to swing. But count
- 58:230 and 2. Zachary to the belt. And delivers. And
- 58:33Seaver again swings and misses. And he squares
- 58:37the button. Came back to swing. Zachary has his
- 58:41third strikeout. One away. And Dave Collins the
- 58:44batter. Collins. 0 -1 officially in the first
- 58:53inning. He put out a punt. The ball was just
- 58:56a few feet in front of the plate where Savino
- 58:59peeled it and threw him out, and then he walked
- 59:02in the second inning. Reds scoring two here in
- 59:07the inning so far, and have tied it up 2 -2.
- 59:16Zachary ready. And delivers. Collins takes it
- 59:20low and outside the ball. Rusty Stobb playing
- 59:24off the bag and in front of Joe Nolan. Zachary.
- 59:39The 1 -0 to Collins. Dave takes it under the
- 59:42knees. It's two balls, no strikes. Well, Montreal
- 59:49has picked up another lug on and now leaves the
- 59:52Braves 3 -0. Atlanta's bat to fifth. Zachary
- 1:00:02ready for 2 -0. Collins swings it, grounds it
- 1:00:05hard in the right field. That's the main shift.
- 1:00:09Dolan moves on to second. He'll hold right there.
- 1:00:11And that's four hits now in the inning. And we
- 1:00:14might see some activity down in the... New York
- 1:00:18bullpen. It was first hit, and now Rube Walker,
- 1:00:23the pitching coach for the Mets, will take a
- 1:00:26walk to the mound. He'll have a word with Pat
- 1:00:28Zachary. The inning started off with Knight singling
- 1:00:32to, in the hole, a shortstop. Then the first
- 1:00:36pitch delivered to Ron Oster. He tripled the
- 1:00:39right center field, scoring Knight. Oster scored
- 1:00:45when Nolan singled to center field. Seaver struck
- 1:00:49out, and now the single by Dave Collins brought
- 1:00:51Rube Walker out of the New York dugout. He's
- 1:00:54still at the mound talking with Trevino and Pat
- 1:00:57Zachary. No activity as yet down in the New York
- 1:01:02bullpen. Walker back to the Mets dugout. Kenny
- 1:01:14Griffey the batter. Kenny single the first to
- 1:01:17right and then a hard ground ball to Baylor at
- 1:01:21short to force Collins to end the second inning.
- 1:01:25Kenny hitting .294. A home run, 16 RBI. Zachary
- 1:01:30ready and delivered. Griff swings and hits one
- 1:01:33into shallow center field. Coming on is Wilson.
- 1:01:36He's there and he has it two away. Two down,
- 1:01:46Dave Concepcion the batter. Dave one for two.
- 1:01:52In the first inning, he had a hard one -bouncer
- 1:01:54back to the mound. It struck Zachary on the right
- 1:01:57side, bounced toward shortstop. Dave reaching
- 1:02:01first, and then in the third inning, he bounced
- 1:02:04to Cubbies at third base. Tied up two to two.
- 1:02:10The Reds with Nolan in second, Collins at first,
- 1:02:13and two away. Reds have had four hits here in
- 1:02:18the inning. Zachary to the belt. Delivers to
- 1:02:34Davian. It's swung on and missed. All in one.
- 1:02:46I feel playing Concepcion straight away. He was
- 1:02:50four home runs on the year. And 44 RBI. The 0
- 1:02:57-1 delivery. Check swing and he goes too far.
- 1:03:02Zachary in front 0 -2 now to Concepcion. Now
- 1:03:10Davey goes beyond deck circle to get the pine
- 1:03:13tar right. George Foster. Nolan is second lead.
- 1:03:29Collins at first. Zachary has the sign from Trevino.
- 1:03:35The stretch and the pitch. That's high. A fastball.
- 1:03:39Not missing by much. And the count goes the ball
- 1:03:42two strikes to Davis. Coverage deep and third.
- 1:03:54Mailer deep and short. It's a one -two pitch.
- 1:04:00Kane spun on and missed. And that's four strikeouts
- 1:04:03for Zachary. But the Reds get two in the inning
- 1:04:06on four hits. So there are no errors. Two runners
- 1:04:09left on base. And it's the middle of the fourth.
- 1:04:12The Reds two and the Mets two. Now we're tied
- 1:04:16up two to two as the Mets bat in the bottom half
- 1:04:18of fourth inning. It'll be Mike Covich, Alex
- 1:04:21Trevino, and Doug Fled to face Tom Seaver. The
- 1:04:26Mets scoring a run in the second on Kingman's
- 1:04:28home run. They picked up a run in the third when
- 1:04:31Wilson Singles stole second. Moved to third on
- 1:04:36a sacrifice by Baylor, and he scored on Valentine's
- 1:04:40sacrifice fly to center field. Covich in the
- 1:04:44second inning, a fly ball to Collins in right
- 1:04:48field. Mike hitting .233, three RBIs and two
- 1:04:53doubles. Covey's a left -handed batter. Stever
- 1:04:59waiting on Covey to settle in. End of the wide
- 1:05:04and the pitch. Covey takes it down low of all.
- 1:05:092 -2 the score here in the fourth inning. Reds
- 1:05:13trying to sweep the three games from the Mets
- 1:05:16and extend their winning streak to seven straight.
- 1:05:22Beavers 1 -0. Covey swings and hits it hard to
- 1:05:25right field, but Collins moving forward the line
- 1:05:28is able to make the play. A one -way, and Alex
- 1:05:33Pervino at the batter. Pervino, single to center
- 1:05:37in the second inning. Pervino, a right -handed
- 1:05:41batter. Rear to the plate. Trevino takes low
- 1:05:59on outside of ball. Come back for the 1 -0. Trevino
- 1:06:09swings and misses. Tried to tacky swing on a
- 1:06:12slider low on outside. Count evens 1 -1. On the
- 1:06:231 -1. Strike two called. An off -speed pitch.
- 1:06:27Siever in front of all two strikes. Tom looks
- 1:06:29to be picking up ahead of his team. He delivers
- 1:06:33the one -two. That's strike three -four. Third
- 1:06:37strikeout for Siever. Two away, and the batter
- 1:06:41is Doug Flynn. Now the fly ball to Collins and
- 1:06:46right in the second inning. Well, in a .243 batting
- 1:06:58average, the home run, the 11 RBIs, Seaver winds
- 1:07:02and the pitch. Check swing, ground ball, rolls
- 1:07:06foul off the first baseline. Danny Dreesen fuels
- 1:07:09the ball and returns it to Seaver. Seaver getting
- 1:07:14Pravino on a changeup for a called third strike.
- 1:07:24Tom Wines, the 0 -1. Bung on and looped into
- 1:07:28shallow right center. Going out, Oster has room.
- 1:07:31And Rod makes the play for the second time in
- 1:07:34the game. Seaver has retired. The Mets in order.
- 1:07:37And after four, Reds 2, New York 2. Morning show,
- 1:07:45the Reds, two runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 1:07:49New York Mets, two runs, four hits, and no errors.
- 1:07:53For the Reds. Thank you, Joe. You know, I wonder
- 1:08:01how Johnny's doing. Yes, sir. Well, let's see.
- 1:08:069 -17. I would say that J .P. is sitting back,
- 1:08:13very relaxed, enjoying this fine broadcast of
- 1:08:18his favorite team. I'm sure he is. Yes. Thank
- 1:08:23you. Here's Foster. It's been all Pat Zachary
- 1:08:29against George in this game. Twice he has struck
- 1:08:31him out, once looking in the first and swinging
- 1:08:34in the third. Now the Reds come off the mat in
- 1:08:37the fourth inning to score twice and tie the
- 1:08:39score. Here comes Zach's pitch and Foster swings
- 1:08:42and he misses. At the end of two in St. Louis,
- 1:08:45Cardinals 2, Dodgers nothing. George Hendrick,
- 1:08:48a two -run homer in the first, number 10 of the
- 1:08:50year for the Cardinal outfielder. Foster now
- 1:08:57steps away from the plate. Zachary's been touched
- 1:09:00for seven home runs. And that equals the number
- 1:09:03that Randy Jones has thrown up. Make that six
- 1:09:06homers that Zachary has allowed. Jones gave up
- 1:09:09his seventh last night to Foster. George swings
- 1:09:12it again, misses. Quickly no balls and two strikes.
- 1:09:16Danny Dreesen on deck to be followed by Ray Knight.
- 1:09:29Foster's 46 RBIs lead the Major League, but boy,
- 1:09:33Buddy Bell. You talk about coming in a hurry.
- 1:09:37Over with the Texas Rangers. He has jumped up
- 1:09:40over the 40 mark. Foster takes the pitch inside
- 1:09:43for a ball. In fact, he had five RBIs last night
- 1:09:49in the 12 -5 win over Milwaukee, including a
- 1:09:52home run. He has 43 runs batted in this season.
- 1:09:57One ball, two strikes. Foster strikes out swinging.
- 1:10:00That's the third time Zachary has gotten him.
- 1:10:04And for Pat overall, his fifth strikeout. Facing
- 1:10:09Danny Dreesen, who walked in the first and flied
- 1:10:12to center in the third. Funny, he's talking about
- 1:10:14change -ups in our league, and I know we feel
- 1:10:16that Mario Soto's got the best in the league,
- 1:10:19but I tell you, Pat Zachary's right there with
- 1:10:22him. Well, he, of course, came to the big leagues
- 1:10:24with a reputation of having an awful good one,
- 1:10:27and he's kept it with him all these years. There's
- 1:10:29ball one. A 2 -2 tie, top half of the fifth.
- 1:10:41Now Zachary goes to the windup and Dreesen calls
- 1:10:43time with plate umpire Lee Weier. The Red Cedar
- 1:10:47Rapids Club came up with a doubleheader victory
- 1:10:49over Burlington last night, 6 -4 in 10 in game
- 1:10:521, 8 -2 in the second game. In the opener, outfielder
- 1:10:54Ken Scarface from Western Michigan University
- 1:10:56had a two -run homer to tie at the seventh, sending
- 1:11:00the game to extra innings. And then catcher Dave
- 1:11:03Miley won it with a bases -loaded single in the
- 1:11:0510th inning. Two balls and no strike. Zachary
- 1:11:15deals, Greeson takes, and that's over. Strike
- 1:11:17one called. Greeson waving the bat around. Zachary
- 1:11:30checks with Trevino. He pitches, and Danny takes
- 1:11:32ball three. That's below the knees, a breaking
- 1:11:34ball. Any American League at the end of five
- 1:11:37in Toronto, the Blue Jays five, the Kansas City
- 1:11:39Royals three, Martinez the homer for the Jays,
- 1:11:41McCray home run number... Four for Kansas City.
- 1:11:48Zachary behind and pitching to Dreesen, and Danny
- 1:11:51takes ball four, and he's on. The second time
- 1:11:54that Zachary has walked the Reds' first baseman,
- 1:11:56and his third walk overall. The batter, Ray Knight,
- 1:12:02got things going in the two -run fourth inning
- 1:12:05with an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop.
- 1:12:09and then scored all the way from first base on
- 1:12:12Ron Oster's triple to deep right center. After
- 1:12:14two and a half at Milwaukee, Brewers 1, Rangers
- 1:12:17nothing. Gorman Thomas, home run number 15 in
- 1:12:20the second. Pete Bukovic going after his eighth
- 1:12:23win of the season for the Brewers against Ferguson
- 1:12:25Jenkins. The Yankees and the White Sox are tied
- 1:12:28up at 1 -1 after an inning and a half. Lou Piniella
- 1:12:30homered in the first for New York as second.
- 1:12:32Doug Bird, 5 -0 against Steve Trout. Streets
- 1:12:35and running. Knight swinging and fouls it off
- 1:12:37the end of the bat. In the bottom of the second
- 1:12:40in Minnesota, Twins 2, Tigers nothing. Pete Redfern
- 1:12:44against Dan Petrie. And two late games. We'll
- 1:12:47have Baltimore, Seattle, and Boston in California.
- 1:12:55Red's about to hit the net. 7 -4. Neither team
- 1:12:57has committed an error, and we've got Dreesen
- 1:12:59aboard for a one -odd walk. Zachary delivers,
- 1:13:05and Knight bunts third base side. Fair ball,
- 1:13:08fair ball, still fair, and now foul as it rolls
- 1:13:11across the line. Maybe five or six feet short
- 1:13:14of the third base bag. Knight will come back
- 1:13:22with a count of no balls and two strikes on him.
- 1:13:33Reds trying to extend their winning streak to
- 1:13:35seven in a row. This is already the second -best
- 1:13:37winning streak of the season. Last month, they
- 1:13:40ran off eight straight. They won seven of their
- 1:13:44last eight, 11 of their last 14, and 16 out of
- 1:13:48their last 20. And being 13 over the 500 mark,
- 1:13:52their best total of the season. Reds win tonight.
- 1:13:56The Dodgers lost, and we're only a half a game
- 1:13:59back. And the Cardinals have the early lead at
- 1:14:01St. Louis over L .A., and Fernando Valenzuela
- 1:14:042 -0. Right back at the batter's box, and Zachary
- 1:14:11ready to pitch again. But first, he'll throw
- 1:14:13to first, driving Griesen back. Pitch. Just missed
- 1:14:30with it, and Knight almost went too far. Was
- 1:14:33able to hold up on the swing. Ronnie Oster coming
- 1:14:42up next. This game in the top half of the fifth
- 1:14:45inning. Another throw to first, but this one
- 1:14:51just a lob throw onto Rusty Staub. This will
- 1:14:55probably be the best crowd of the three Knights.
- 1:14:58that the Reds have spent here in New York. And
- 1:15:00I would imagine many of them here because of
- 1:15:04Tom Seaver's presence on the mound for the Cincinnati
- 1:15:06team. One and two and holding on Knight and another
- 1:15:13throw to first. And this one had a purpose behind
- 1:15:15it as Zachary really brought it over there to
- 1:15:17stop. Pat Zachary waging a war on two fronts
- 1:15:28with Dreesen at first with Knight at the plate.
- 1:15:30In a 2 -2 game in the fifth inning. One man out,
- 1:15:35the infield at double play depth. Zachary stretches
- 1:15:38and steps off the pitching rubber. Danny meanwhile
- 1:15:49edging a little bit farther off the bag against
- 1:15:52the holding stop. And a throw to first again
- 1:15:58and safe again. That's a 5 -win -6 loss and a
- 1:16:10432 -run average. He's been healthy this season,
- 1:16:13which is a departure from the way much of his
- 1:16:17career has gone since leaving Cincinnati and
- 1:16:20coming to New York. He's had a number of injuries
- 1:16:23that have kept him out of a lot of starts. Knight
- 1:16:26strikes out swinging on a changeup, and that's
- 1:16:28the number six of the night for Mr. Zachary.
- 1:16:32He struck out Foster, he walked Reese, and he
- 1:16:34fans Knight. And Ronnie Oster, one for two, his
- 1:16:39first hit in this series, a big one, a fourth
- 1:16:41-inning triple to deep right center field that
- 1:16:43knocked in a run his 26th of the year, and he
- 1:16:46later scored the tying run when Nolan Singleton
- 1:16:48hit the center field. Three years ago, Pat suffered
- 1:16:56a fracture of his left foot when he kicked the
- 1:17:00dugout step after being taken out of the game
- 1:17:03here with a red. And was on the disabled list
- 1:17:07the rest of the season. There's a throw to first
- 1:17:09again to stop. Prior to that, he was on the way
- 1:17:14to what possibly would have been his best year
- 1:17:16in the big leagues. He had already picked up
- 1:17:17ten victories at the time of the injury. He's
- 1:17:26working to Oster, and Ronnie takes it high and
- 1:17:28away for a ball. 1979, his season was again curtailed
- 1:17:32by injury. Before he went out with elbow problems,
- 1:17:36he had a couple of victories against the Cubs
- 1:17:40and the Phillies, but then developed a tingling
- 1:17:42sensation in his right elbow and was on the disabled
- 1:17:46list with an irritation of the ulnar nerve. So
- 1:17:49Pat Zachary has had more than his share of physical
- 1:17:51problems. Two and 0 to count. Another throw to
- 1:18:05first base as Zachary continues to pay attention
- 1:18:07to Danny Dreesen who drew the one -out walk.
- 1:18:17Oster batting 295 after his fifth triple of the
- 1:18:20season last inning. That's right, Andrew, with
- 1:18:31a motion. He kicks fire. Oster takes a high fastball,
- 1:18:343 -0. Zachary has struck out six. He's walked
- 1:18:41three. Ronnie Oster looking at a straightaway
- 1:18:48New York outfield as he bids to get on with the
- 1:18:51second walk of the inning. Indianapolis trailing
- 1:18:55Oklahoma City 1 -0 at the end of two. Oklahoma
- 1:18:59City with a run in the second inning. Dreeson
- 1:19:02running, pitch is taken high, ball four. So two
- 1:19:04men on with two men out as we pause for station
- 1:19:08identification on the Cincinnati Reds baseball
- 1:19:11network. Country music fans, you'll not want
- 1:19:14to miss the K95 Country Countdown each and every
- 1:19:17Sunday morning from 9 a .m. until noon. Your
- 1:19:19host, Greg Shepard, countdown the top 30 tunes
- 1:19:22here in K95 Country. K95 Country Countdown, WHOK
- 1:19:26-FM, Lancaster. Here's Joe Nolan who delivered
- 1:19:32the tying run home in the fourth inning with
- 1:19:33a single, and Joe's two for two tonight. His
- 1:19:37batting average has jumped back over 300. It
- 1:19:39stands at 301. Takes it down on him for a ball.
- 1:19:48Exactly looking out into the on -deck circle
- 1:19:50where he sees Tom Sieber, and now he's going
- 1:19:52to receive a visit to the mound from pitching
- 1:19:54coach Rube Walker. Forest Park's annual community
- 1:19:57night with the Reds. That's coming up on Thursday,
- 1:20:00June the 25th, when the Reds meet the Cardinals.
- 1:20:02We'll look forward to seeing all the folks from
- 1:20:03Forest Park at the stadium that night. Zachary,
- 1:20:10after picking up a strikeout, walked Dreesen,
- 1:20:14and after another strikeout, has walked Ron Oster.
- 1:20:17Two men on, two men out in a 2 -2 game, and Nolan
- 1:20:20looking for his third straight hit. That RBI
- 1:20:23in the fourth is tenth of the season. Here's
- 1:20:37the right -hander with a 1 -0 to the plate. Swung
- 1:20:40on, ground ball to second. Doug Flynn kicks it
- 1:20:42around, recovers, and throws the first in plenty
- 1:20:44of time. No runs in the inning, no base hits.
- 1:20:47Two men left on. After four and a half, the Reds
- 1:20:51and the Mets all locked in at two runs apiece.
- 1:20:54Get to meet that time of the year again, Summer
- 1:20:56Fair in Cincinnati. It happens just one weekend
- 1:20:59every summer on our beautiful Cincinnati riverfront.
- 1:21:02This year, it's June 13th and 14th. And again
- 1:21:04this year, Kahn's Wieners and Franks are the
- 1:21:06official hot dog of Summer Fair. Now, why was
- 1:21:09Kahn's selected as the official hot dog? Well,
- 1:21:11for the very same reason that Kahn's is the only
- 1:21:14hot dog served at Riverfront Stadium. Because
- 1:21:16at Kahn's, great meat makes great wieners. And
- 1:21:20you know, Kahn's is not only the hot dog of the
- 1:21:22Cincinnati Reds. Kahn's hot dogs are also featured
- 1:21:24at Riverfront Coliseum, at the Convention Center,
- 1:21:26the Cincinnati Zoo, Shea Stadium in New York,
- 1:21:28Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, and Ruff
- 1:21:30Arena in Lexington. Kahn's Hot Dogs are featured
- 1:21:33at so many quality places because they are a
- 1:21:35quality product. And naturally, they're the official
- 1:21:38hot dog of Cincinnati Summer Fair featuring quality
- 1:21:40entertainment. So plan the weekend, June 13th
- 1:21:44and 14th, for fun at Cincinnati Summer Fair on
- 1:21:46the riverfront. Enjoy arts and crafts, music
- 1:21:49and sunshine, and Kahn's Hot Dogs at Summer Fair.
- 1:21:53Park free at the stadium. Have you made your
- 1:22:07vacation plans this year? Maybe you're thinking
- 1:22:09about staying a little closer to home, maybe
- 1:22:11driving less, watching your dollars a little
- 1:22:13more carefully. If so, may we suggest a trip
- 1:22:16to Cincinnati to see some Reds baseball at Riverfront
- 1:22:18Stadium and to enjoy all the other fine attractions
- 1:22:21and things to do in the Queen City. To get a
- 1:22:23schedule and ticket mail or information, just
- 1:22:25give a call to the Reds office. And if you'd
- 1:22:27like some other information about... Things like
- 1:22:29hotels, motels, restaurants, and all the things
- 1:22:32to see and do in Cincinnati. Just tell the Reds
- 1:22:35and they'll be happy to see that information
- 1:22:36and send it your way. Give a call or drop a note
- 1:22:39to Cincinnati Reds, Riverfront Stadium, Cincinnati,
- 1:22:42Ohio. Matt Zachary will be first up for the Mets
- 1:22:48in the home half of the fifth inning. Zebri got
- 1:22:52him on a strikeout in the second, won a three
- 1:22:54strikeout. The time is recorded tonight. Went
- 1:22:58into this dart, six on the all -time strikeout
- 1:23:00list, and now has a total of 3 ,036. Pitches
- 1:23:08in for a strike. Well, we've got a correction
- 1:23:09on that Indy Oklahoma City score. Indianapolis
- 1:23:12is leading 1 -0 with a run on the second, and
- 1:23:14that game now is in the top half of the fourth
- 1:23:16inning at Oklahoma City. That team, the Philadelphia
- 1:23:20Philly Triple -A Farm Club. Zachary takes it
- 1:23:27high, a fastball, 1 -1. They're through three
- 1:23:30in St. Louis, cards two, Dodgers nothing. Zachary
- 1:23:38taking strike two. With a complete game by Mario
- 1:23:42Soto last night, that gives the Reds five in
- 1:23:44the last six games, and it's interesting to note,
- 1:23:47pitches outside for a ball, that the Reds now
- 1:23:52have a total of 15 complete games this season.
- 1:23:55And that is second best in the National League,
- 1:23:57two behind the leading Dodgers. Two balls, two
- 1:24:02strikes. They make that three and two on Zachary.
- 1:24:05And the Dodgers, as the pitching staff, have
- 1:24:0717 complete games. The Reds are second with 15.
- 1:24:12And Zachary hits one into right center field,
- 1:24:14and Grifty will get there to make the catch.
- 1:24:21For the third time tonight, it'll be center fielder
- 1:24:23Mookie Wilson at the plate, and the first he
- 1:24:25struck out and the third he single stole a base
- 1:24:28and came in to score. So one for two tonight
- 1:24:36and three for nine so far in the series. Wilson's
- 1:24:40batting .285 with a home run and seven RBIs.
- 1:24:50He bunched at it, lost the bat, made contact.
- 1:24:53Nolan hung on to it, strike one. This is a young
- 1:25:00man whose reputation preceded him to the major
- 1:25:03leagues. He had some fine numbers in the Mets
- 1:25:06minor league organization. Ground ball, and that's
- 1:25:09a fair ball by first. Down the right field line,
- 1:25:12Wilson can motor. He's coming to second. He's
- 1:25:16going to take the turn and haul right there as
- 1:25:18the ball bounced into the seats apparently. So
- 1:25:22Mookie Wilson, who had designs on third base,
- 1:25:25and he can flat fly now, I'll tell you. Being
- 1:25:30forced to stop at second as Dave Collins pointed
- 1:25:34into the seats as if to indicate that either
- 1:25:36somebody reached over and picked the ball off
- 1:25:39or the ball bounced in there. It's out of our
- 1:25:40line of vision where we're located. On the press
- 1:25:43level here at Shea, Joe Torre is out saying something
- 1:25:47to first base umpire Dutch Rennert, who in turn
- 1:25:49goes to plate umpire Lee Rennert, Lee Weier.
- 1:25:52And now Dutch has gone back to Joe Torre. I don't
- 1:25:57know what Joe is saying other than he's saying
- 1:26:00that... Mookie would have been a third, but that's
- 1:26:03an absolute ground rule double. Anytime the fan
- 1:26:06interferes with the ball like that, it's a ground
- 1:26:09rule double. It could be all the way to home,
- 1:26:11but I think that I might be wrong in this, but
- 1:26:14as far as I know, it's an out -and -out ground
- 1:26:17rule. Just when you're playing in your home park.
- 1:26:31Joe Torre knows that as well as anybody. I guess
- 1:26:34he figures, what the heck, I'll take a shot.
- 1:26:36You never know what might happen. Oh, true. So
- 1:26:40the go -ahead runs at second. One away in the
- 1:26:42inning. Bob Baylor is 0 for 1 with a sacrifice
- 1:26:45punt. Seaver with a look to second, the pitch
- 1:26:52to the plate, and Baylor is down a strike. Check,
- 1:27:10swing, foul, ball. A little bounce pass and that's
- 1:27:12dugout. I'll tell you, there's some fellas in
- 1:27:15this league that can really air it out on those
- 1:27:18bases. First time we've really gotten a chance
- 1:27:21to watch Mookie Wilson do his thing. Think about
- 1:27:25him and Tim Raines up at Montreal. Gary Templeton,
- 1:27:30who's no slouch in that department. Davey Lopes,
- 1:27:32who's been doing it for years in the league.
- 1:27:34Dave Collins. This one fouled out of play. The
- 1:27:37National League certainly has... its share of
- 1:27:40young men who can motor on the bases. Of course,
- 1:27:49Rain's just walking away with the stolen base
- 1:27:54race in the National League. He's now swiped
- 1:27:5648. Billy North, who can pick him up and lay
- 1:27:59him down, is second with 25. And Rodney Scott
- 1:28:02of Montreal, 22. Here comes Wilson, the third.
- 1:28:04Ball is popped up. Now Wilson has to right himself.
- 1:28:07Ronnie Oster will make the catch. Wilson had
- 1:28:10time to straighten himself out and get back to
- 1:28:12second base, but he was on his way toward trying
- 1:28:14to steal third base and was on his way with a
- 1:28:17pretty good shot at it. I would say he was there.
- 1:28:21I would agree with you. Two down, Ellis Valentine
- 1:28:26at the plate, and he has driven in a New York
- 1:28:30run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
- 1:28:36He's knocked in 17. Now Sabre trying to keep
- 1:28:41the 2 -2 tie intact. Valentine rips it down back
- 1:28:46upstairs. Well, we've had two pretty good ballgames
- 1:28:57here at Shea Stadium. The 8 -4 Reds win Tuesday
- 1:28:59night would not reflect that fact unless you
- 1:29:02knew the facts, but it was a 4 -4 game until
- 1:29:05the Reds broke the tie with four in the ninth
- 1:29:07inning. Check swing, low and away. And of course,
- 1:29:10last night, Randy Jones was outstanding in a
- 1:29:13losing effort. In fact, the Mets out hit the
- 1:29:15Reds 6 -5, but Cincinnati got the home run from
- 1:29:18Foster. And the run -producing single by Concepcion
- 1:29:21to win it behind Soto. Strike two called a valentine.
- 1:29:24Tonight, we're tied up at two. Mets got runs
- 1:29:27in the second and the third. The Reds tied it
- 1:29:29up in the fourth. And about hit New York 7 -5.
- 1:29:36One ball, two strikes, Ballantyne. And the pitch,
- 1:29:39and he strikes out swinging. Sabre gets number
- 1:29:42four. And the Met numbers in the fifth, no runs
- 1:29:45a hit. Wilson left at second through five complete.
- 1:29:49The Reds two, the Mets likewise. I'm waiting
- 1:29:52for you. Joe Nutsall, yours truly, Marty Brenneman,
- 1:30:25back at Shea Stadium in New York City as we move
- 1:30:28on to the sixth inning. Don Seaver coming out
- 1:30:33of the dugout and heading toward the plate to
- 1:30:36start things off against Pat Zachary, who...
- 1:30:39has been in trouble more often than not tonight.
- 1:30:42The Reds have stranded nine runners, left the
- 1:30:45bases loaded in the first inning, stranded two
- 1:30:47in the second. The only easy inning that he's
- 1:30:50had, Zachary was in the third when he retired
- 1:30:52the side in 1 -2 -3 fashion, gave up two runs
- 1:30:55on four hits with two left in the fourth. There's
- 1:30:58a ball to Seaver and then walked two, but got
- 1:31:00out of that jam in the fifth inning by getting
- 1:31:02Nolan to ground out the second. So it's not been
- 1:31:04an easy night for Pat Zachary. Sabre is sacrificed
- 1:31:11and is struck out. 1 -0 pitch. High ball two.
- 1:31:34Sabre wanted two red pitchers to have clouded
- 1:31:36home runs this season. He pops this one up behind
- 1:31:39the plate. Coming back is Trevino, and reaching
- 1:31:43into the seat has no play at all. It's about
- 1:31:45four rows back. Tom Holmert against the Houston
- 1:31:49Astros while pitching a shutout that particular
- 1:31:52game at Riverfront Stadium, and then Doug Baer
- 1:31:54had that big three -run home run at Wrigley Field
- 1:31:56a few weeks ago. Two balls and a strike as Pitcher
- 1:32:06faces Pitcher in the sixth inning. Seaver with
- 1:32:12a pop -up that'll be playable. The third baseman
- 1:32:15coverage calling. Waiting for that one to come
- 1:32:17down. One out. Now Dave Collins, who's one for
- 1:32:26two, has been on twice. He's walked and he's
- 1:32:28singled. Thrown out trying to bunt his way on
- 1:32:31in the first inning. I'd like to send along our
- 1:32:35best tonight to Reds fans listening on WLAP in
- 1:32:38Lexington, Kentucky, WHIO in Dayton, Ohio, WAVE
- 1:32:42in Louisville, Kentucky, and WIFP in Indianapolis,
- 1:32:45Indiana. Collins takes a one -bouncer that gets
- 1:32:55away from Trevino. Art Howe continues to lead
- 1:32:58the National League in batting with a .344 average,
- 1:33:01and Pete Rose... His second now at .330 along
- 1:33:05with Pedro Guerrero of the Dodgers. He's continued
- 1:33:07to hit all season. Billy Madlock up there. Collins
- 1:33:12has dropped out of the top ten. He's hitting
- 1:33:13a .311. He swings and pops it up back of third.
- 1:33:17Foul territory. Racing over is Kingman. Baylor.
- 1:33:21And the ball falls out of play. One ball and
- 1:33:32one strike. Zachary coming in off the mound now
- 1:33:40to get a new baseball and also have a word or
- 1:33:46two with Lee Weier. In the seventh inning at
- 1:33:51Montreal, the Expos are trying to route the Braves
- 1:33:54for the third straight night, leading 7 -0. Expos
- 1:33:58have been in double figures the first two games
- 1:34:00of that series and got four runs in the sixth
- 1:34:03inning tonight to, in all likelihood, blow that
- 1:34:06game wide open. Pitches high and outside a ball
- 1:34:10to the Expos, and going home, they've gotten
- 1:34:12well all of a sudden. Red swept them over the
- 1:34:16weekend at Riverfront Stadium, but now they go
- 1:34:18back home and are on their way to a third consecutive
- 1:34:21victory over Atlanta. Two balls and a strike
- 1:34:24on Collins. Checks his swing. It's high. 3 -1.
- 1:34:39Ken Griffey on deck with one out in the sixth.
- 1:34:47Zachary kicks and he fires. Collins swings and
- 1:34:49bounces towards second. Flynn charges, plays,
- 1:34:52throws, out. Two away. The batter, Ken Griffey,
- 1:35:00had a base hit in the first inning, but since
- 1:35:02has hit into a force out and fly to center. And
- 1:35:11now the center fielder, Ken Griffey. Zachary,
- 1:35:24once earlier tonight, has retired the Reds in
- 1:35:26order. Trying to do it for the second time as
- 1:35:29he's up with his pitcher ball to Griffey. That's
- 1:35:40low and inside. Two balls and no strike. Griffey
- 1:35:56rips one by Doug Flynn. That's in the center
- 1:35:58field for a base hit. Hit number eight tonight
- 1:36:02for Cincinnati and the second for Griffey as
- 1:36:04the inning continues for shortstop Dave Concepcion.
- 1:36:12Davey has got an infield hit, bounced out third
- 1:36:14to first and struck out. It's not hard to see
- 1:36:21why the Reds... have the team batting average
- 1:36:26that they have this season, a batting average
- 1:36:31of 271. You look at those leading the National
- 1:36:34League in total base hits. Rose was 73, but then
- 1:36:38Collins and Concepcion were tied for second.
- 1:36:41Going into play tonight was 66. Foster was tied
- 1:36:44for third with 65. And the two hits that Griffey
- 1:36:47has had in the game now give him 66. Four players
- 1:36:51off the Cincinnati Ball Club. There's a ball
- 1:36:53to Concepcion. Collins, Concepcion, Foster, and
- 1:36:58Griffey. Kenny at first, two out. Throw by Zachary
- 1:37:09to first base. Zachary brings his hands down
- 1:37:24to the belt, throws to first, safe again. Now
- 1:37:28we're 14 minutes to 10 o 'clock in New York as
- 1:37:31you are in Cincinnati. I've heard nothing in
- 1:37:36so far as what might be happening at the negotiating
- 1:37:38session in downtown Manhattan. That's up high
- 1:37:46for a ball, 2 -0. Zachary has started to fall
- 1:37:49behind quite a bit now on the hitters. Mike Covage
- 1:37:59was playing in a bit of third base, but he is
- 1:38:01now backed up to play a deep position there.
- 1:38:05Two balls, no strikes. On the stop, Griffey safe.
- 1:38:09The call from Dutch Renner. Reds and the Mets
- 1:38:15are tied up at 2 -2. Cincinnati bats in the sixth
- 1:38:17inning. Zachary retired the first two before
- 1:38:20Griffey singled the center. And he throws to
- 1:38:25first again. Zach apparently feeling that Griffey
- 1:38:27may well be running on the next pitch with Concepcion
- 1:38:30out ahead 2 -0. Trevino hangs a sign. Here comes
- 1:38:49the pitch. Swing and a miss. I'll tell you, the
- 1:38:54way the Cubs have been playing of late, they
- 1:38:56are slowly but surely creeping up on the fifth
- 1:38:59-place New York team. The victory today by Chicago
- 1:39:03over the Giants gives them a record of 15 -37.
- 1:39:06New York is 17 -33. Hard smash, but third baseman
- 1:39:13Kovic bobbles the ball and will not have a play.
- 1:39:17Ball was hit hard, but at him. He booted it away
- 1:39:21toward the foul line behind third. And everybody
- 1:39:25is safe, and Foster comes to the plate as Rube
- 1:39:27Walker heads back toward the mound. Ball was
- 1:39:31hit very hard by Davies, but did not appear to
- 1:39:35be a difficult ball for coverage to play, and
- 1:39:38he's going to be charged with an error. So the
- 1:39:49Reds posing a two -out threat on a single by
- 1:39:51Griffey. Concepcion's on through the error by
- 1:39:53Mike Kovic. Rube Walker, who's been to the mound
- 1:39:56a couple of times previous to this one, goes
- 1:39:58back to the dugout, and we may see some activity
- 1:40:01up in the New York bullpen. George Foster has
- 1:40:07struck out three straight times. Looks like right
- 1:40:22-hander Dyer Miller has started to throw now
- 1:40:23in the New York bullpen. Runners leading at first
- 1:40:26and second, two outs. Foster takes the pitch
- 1:40:30wide of the play. Ball one. George trying to
- 1:40:43get the go -ahead runs in. And swings and misses.
- 1:40:47Zachary has pitched George about as well as you
- 1:40:49can pitch him. He's kept the ball pretty effectively
- 1:40:51away from him. That pitch was out away from the
- 1:40:55right -handed batter and it's a ball and a strike.
- 1:41:03Griffey second, Concepcion first. Pitch, Zachary,
- 1:41:06swung on, fly ball, hit back into left field.
- 1:41:08Kingman going back, got a chance, goal! Foster
- 1:41:13drills a 1 -1 pitch on a line into the Cincinnati
- 1:41:16bullpen. Home run number 14, and the Reds lead
- 1:41:20it 5 -2. That one got out of here right now.
- 1:41:26It was hard to say if it was going to be high
- 1:41:28enough. I knew he got it. It was right there
- 1:41:31flooring, but whether it was going to be high
- 1:41:33enough, it was. He has now knocked in 49 runs
- 1:41:39with that three -run blast to left field, and
- 1:41:42the Reds lead by three. So Foster more than makes
- 1:41:51up for those three strikeouts with a blast that
- 1:41:55breaks the tie. Danny Dreesen takes ball once.
- 1:42:08Well, you've got a three -way tie for home run
- 1:42:10leadership in the league now. Two balls and no
- 1:42:13strikes. Foster, Kingman, and Schmidt have all
- 1:42:21hit 14 home runs. Zachary delivers, and Dreesen
- 1:42:31takes a strike. Two and one. All of it coming
- 1:42:37after the first two men have been retired. Zachary
- 1:42:39was looking for an easy six, but it is certainly
- 1:42:43not turned out that way. Danny fouls this one
- 1:42:45onto the screen. Two and two. Top half of the
- 1:42:54sixth inning from St. Louis. Cardinals two, Dodgers
- 1:42:57nothing. Treason fouls this one off the left
- 1:43:02field line and well back into the seat. Second
- 1:43:14home run that Foster's hit in as many nights.
- 1:43:17Here's a high fly ball. Headed back in the deep
- 1:43:21right, but on the warning track and waiting is
- 1:43:23Valentine. That ends the inning. The out came
- 1:43:25one, two, one batter too late as far as Zachary
- 1:43:29and company are concerned. Three runs, two hits,
- 1:43:31one error. And after five and a half, the Reds
- 1:43:34over the Mets 5 -2. That's where my heart is
- 1:43:51always in. Baseball is like an old friend. The
- 1:44:03longer it's part of your life, the more you like
- 1:44:06it. That's why so many people come out to see
- 1:44:08the Cincinnati Reds play. It feels good. The
- 1:44:12Marathon Oil Company loves baseball just like
- 1:44:14you do. And the Marathon Oil Company is proud
- 1:44:17to be here with the Cincinnati Reds. It's good
- 1:44:20to be back here again. Oh, you know it is. This
- 1:44:25is the Cincinnati Reds playing baseball. We got
- 1:44:33together to do it better. And we did. Hope you're
- 1:44:38looking forward to being at Riverfront for a
- 1:44:40fun -filled special day coming up next Thursday
- 1:44:42night. That'll be cost -cutter night when the
- 1:44:44Reds meet the Mets. The Reds and Kroger are teaming
- 1:44:46up to give away more than $12 ,000 in groceries.
- 1:44:4850 lucky fans will win $100 worth of groceries.
- 1:44:52Another 50 winners will take home $50, and 125
- 1:44:55fans will be $20 winners. And don't forget those
- 1:44:58delicious Kahn's hot dogs. Just a quarter that
- 1:45:01night at stadium concessions, fans. We'll be
- 1:45:03telling you about lots of other things, too,
- 1:45:05in the days leading up to Costco tonight when
- 1:45:07the Reds meet the Mets next Thursday. Dave Kingman
- 1:45:12to lead off the bottom half of the sixth inning
- 1:45:14for New York. He hit his 14th home run of the
- 1:45:19year, leading off the second and then walked
- 1:45:21in the third. The Mets looking at a three -run
- 1:45:23deficit. Here comes Sieber's pitch to him, and
- 1:45:34Kingman takes it low and in on him, ball one.
- 1:45:51That's over with the knees, the call strike.
- 1:45:58Kingman, despite his .222 batting average, has
- 1:46:01one of the better slugging percentages in the
- 1:46:03National League at .482. He swings and he misses.
- 1:46:07George Foster, fourth in the league in that department
- 1:46:10with a slugging percentage of .558. Andre Dawson
- 1:46:17of Montreal leads the league .592. One ball,
- 1:46:21two strikes. Sieber strikes him out, swinging
- 1:46:24the ball, gets away from Nolan. He recovers.
- 1:46:26And throws on to Greeson to complete the strikeout.
- 1:46:31Tom Sieber gets his fifth. As he disposes of
- 1:46:36Dave Kingman and will go to work on first baseman
- 1:46:38Rusty Staub. Staub is single. He's fly to right
- 1:46:45field. Well, the Reds have just announced they've
- 1:46:53signed their number four pick in the free agent
- 1:46:55draft, Paul O 'Neill, an outfielder, first baseman,
- 1:46:586 '4", 195 -pounder from Brookhaven High School
- 1:47:02in Columbus, Ohio. Oh, another youngster in the
- 1:47:07fold, so to speak. Stobb takes a slow breaking
- 1:47:13ball for strike one. Prior to that, they signed
- 1:47:17a number 12 selection. Charles Colclaw, a first
- 1:47:21baseman outfielder from Lydia, South Carolina.
- 1:47:24And their number 28 pick, Thomas Piller, a third
- 1:47:27baseman from Greeley, Colorado. High ball, 1
- 1:47:31-1 to Stobb. Reds 5, Mets 2. Home sixth inning,
- 1:47:39one out. Stobb with a big bouncing ball to first
- 1:47:42reach and backhands it. Takes a left turn. Gets
- 1:47:46a put out. Two away. That's another fine play
- 1:47:53by Dreesen. We talked, as Joe mentioned with
- 1:47:58Danny the other night on the post -game show,
- 1:48:01about his defensive ability at first base, and
- 1:48:04sometimes you almost have to wonder if the fact
- 1:48:09that he makes it look so easy doesn't work against
- 1:48:11him. Something's working against him. I think
- 1:48:14Danny said the best, though, and he said it's
- 1:48:18a popularity contest. I don't think there's any
- 1:48:20question about that. There's ball one to coverage.
- 1:48:24Fly to right field twice, and both times he's
- 1:48:27hit the ball hard. Two balls, no strikes. Tom
- 1:48:42Seaver working toward what he hopes to be win
- 1:48:45number seven of the season, and he's had some
- 1:48:49touch -and -go innings tonight. Covage takes
- 1:48:58a strike at the knees. Nobody currently throwing
- 1:49:09in the Mets' bullpen, so you figure Zachary's
- 1:49:11going to be out there for at least one more.
- 1:49:15Covage fouls. Out of play. Behind the plate.
- 1:49:18Good catch by a fan down to our left. Two balls,
- 1:49:22two strikes. Two outs. The bases are empty. No
- 1:49:33sooner do we say the lack of activity in the
- 1:49:35Mets' bullpen than they are now going to get
- 1:49:38some with left -hander Ray Sirich. Ball three.
- 1:49:44Sharp breaking ball down and in. Full count.
- 1:50:00Receiver ready to bring the payoff pitch up there.
- 1:50:03Cubbage lines to Dreesen right at him. That's
- 1:50:06three times in a row Mike Cubbage has hit the
- 1:50:08ball hard and has nothing to show for it. The
- 1:50:10Mets are out on order and through six. The Reds

- 1:51:38inning with Ray Knight deleted off, five to two,
- 1:51:40the Reds lead, and back with a play -by -play.
- 1:51:42Here's Joe. Thank you, Marty. Ray Knight deleted
- 1:51:45off here in the seventh inning, the Reds leading
- 1:51:48five to two. Pat Zachary delivers, and Knight
- 1:51:52looks at a strike. Ray one for three tonight,
- 1:51:55and an infield single in the fourth scored the
- 1:51:57first run of the game for the Reds. The Reds
- 1:52:01get a little help from the Mets in the sixth
- 1:52:05inning when Cubbage bobbled the ground ball off
- 1:52:08the bat of Concepcion, and then the final out.
- 1:52:11Knight looks at strike two, and then Foster hit
- 1:52:14a line drive over the .358 sign and left field
- 1:52:17into the Reds' bullpen. For a three -run homer
- 1:52:20and a three -run lead for the Reds. Zachary in
- 1:52:26front, 0 -2 to Ray Knight. Ron Oster on deck.
- 1:52:36Now Knight backs away from the plate. Still out
- 1:52:49of the batter's box. Now steps back in. Zachary
- 1:52:55delivers the 0 -2. High and inside as Knight
- 1:52:59backs away. One ball, two strikes. Dyer Miller
- 1:53:04going down in a New York bullpen. Outfield straightaway
- 1:53:12tonight. Zachary delivers the 1 -2. And Knight
- 1:53:15swings and fouls off to the right. Back into
- 1:53:18the seat. Now, Cal holds the ball two strikes
- 1:53:28to Ray Knight. Reds have out -hit the Mets 9
- 1:53:32-5. Back where he delivers the 1 -2, and Knight
- 1:53:41swings the ground ball. Baylor, it's short, plays
- 1:53:44it, going on to stop. One away. One out, and
- 1:53:54Ron Oster the batter. Ron won for two in a walk.
- 1:53:56He tripled in the fourth inning to right center
- 1:53:59to drive in ninth, and then scored on Dolan,
- 1:54:02single to center. Ron walked in the fifth inning.
- 1:54:11Dodgers score a run, swinging a foul by Oster,
- 1:54:14and the Cardinals bat the bottom of the half
- 1:54:18to six. St. Louis leading the Dodgers 2 -1. Zachary
- 1:54:27shakes off the sign, and the 0 -1. Inside. A
- 1:54:31ball a strike. On out, base is empty. Zachary
- 1:54:41back for the 1 -1. That's down low, and it's
- 1:54:44two balls to strike to Oster. Ron hitting .295.
- 1:54:49Now has five triples and 26 RBIs. Ackrey delivers
- 1:54:57the 2 -1, and Oster swings and sends it down
- 1:55:00the left field line. Moving over is Dave Kingman,
- 1:55:02and in fair territory, he makes a play. Two out,
- 1:55:08and Joe Nolan the batter. Joe, two for three,
- 1:55:13single in the second, and single in the fourth,
- 1:55:16as we said, to drive in Oster in the fifth inning.
- 1:55:19He grabbed it to Flynn in second. Now the catcher,
- 1:55:23Joe Nolan. Zachary winds and delivers. Nolan
- 1:55:34takes it inside the ball. Foster has driven in
- 1:55:40three runs tonight. Oster won and Nolan won.
- 1:55:46Zachary to the plate. Nolan swings and winds
- 1:55:49it in the right center field. That's extra bases.
- 1:55:52Chasing at the wall is Valentine. He's up for
- 1:55:55the ball and Nolan enters second base with his
- 1:55:58third base hit of the game. For Joe, his ninth
- 1:56:02double of the year. Oh, a two out, Nolan at second,
- 1:56:07Tom Seaver the batter. That's the tenth hit of
- 1:56:13the game for the Reds. Seaver 0 for 2 on a sacrifice
- 1:56:17bunt. He had a sacrifice bunt the second inning.
- 1:56:21Struck out in the fourth, and in the sixth inning,
- 1:56:25pop out to coverage at third base. Tom with a
- 1:56:29chance to help himself right here. Zachary sets
- 1:56:32and delivers, and Seaver takes a breaking pitch
- 1:56:35low and away. Nolan at second lead. Zachary to
- 1:56:44the belt. Pitch to Seaver, missing outside, 2
- 1:56:48-0 the count. Reds trying to make it three straight
- 1:56:58over the Mets and seven overall. And the last
- 1:57:04game in San Francisco, the 2 -0 pitch. That's
- 1:57:08in at the knees. It's a false strike, 2 -1. After
- 1:57:14four innings now at Okie City, the Indians leading
- 1:57:18Oklahoma City 1 -0 behind Charlie Lee Brandt.
- 1:57:222 -1 delivery. Seaver swings and a broken bat
- 1:57:25bouncer to Baylor at short. Going on to Seaver
- 1:57:29and Tom hustling down the line and they just
- 1:57:32do get him. A barrel of bat flying all the way
- 1:57:36to third base and Baylor came up throwing and
- 1:57:39Seaver hustling down the line and I'll tell you,
- 1:57:41pretty close play. In the inning for the Reds,
- 1:57:45no runs, no errors. One runner left on base in
- 1:57:48the middle of the seventh. 695, New York 2. There's
- 1:57:57poetry in the West. You can hear it in the way
- 1:58:00people talk about everyday things. Like fences.
- 1:58:03There's a lot of sorry things can happen to a
- 1:58:06fence. Or children. She's cuter than a speckled
- 1:58:09pup under a red wagon. The cow hands bunkhouse.
- 1:58:13I hung my clothes on the floor so they wouldn't
- 1:58:17fall down and get lost. Even personal finances.
- 1:58:21I'm so broke I can't even pay attention. Here
- 1:58:24then is a Bush beer to the best of the West.
- 1:58:27The everyday poetry of its people. Bush. Head
- 1:58:32for the beer that always goes down smooth as
- 1:58:35a mountain stream. Bush. Brewed just one way.
- 1:58:39The natural way. For a taste that's always as
- 1:58:43smooth as its name. Bush. Head for Bush. Head
- 1:58:48for Bush. New York in the bottom half of seventh
- 1:59:00will send up Alex Trevino, Doug Flynn, and a
- 1:59:03pinch hitter for Pat Zachary. The Reds leading
- 1:59:07five to two. Trevino one for two. He singled
- 1:59:12the center in the second inning and was called
- 1:59:13out on strikes in the fourth. Trevino overall
- 1:59:16hitting 280. With eight RBIs and a double. Tom
- 1:59:22Seaver looking for his seventh win of the year
- 1:59:25in his fifth complete game in 12 starts. I think
- 1:59:38George Foster is swinging the bat. The Reds win
- 1:59:42this one tonight. That'll be the fourth game
- 1:59:44winning RBI for Foster in the last seven games.
- 1:59:52Trevino to lead it off. Seaver ready to go to
- 1:59:55work. And his first pitch on the way. Trevino
- 1:59:59looks at a curveball that's in for a false strike.
- 2:00:05Well, the Indians pick up another run and now
- 2:00:07lead Oklahoma City 2 -0 after five innings. Trevino
- 2:00:12looks at a slider high and it's even at 1 -1.
- 2:00:21The receiver is 1 -1. Trevino swings and misses
- 2:00:24a high pass ball. Tom in front of all two strikes.
- 2:00:29Well, a win for the Reds tonight and a loss for
- 2:00:31the Dodgers, and they're just a half a game out
- 2:00:34of first place. Trevino takes low and outside.
- 2:00:38And the count evens 2 -2. Tom has struck out
- 2:00:47five, has walked one. A stretch to the pitch.
- 2:00:56That's inside. Full count. Thomas had strikeouts
- 2:01:00in every inning excepting the third. They hop
- 2:01:06on the way. Covino swings and a fly ball to right
- 2:01:10field. Dave Collins waiting on it. He has it.
- 2:01:14One out. One away, and that'll bring Doug Gwynne
- 2:01:20to the plate. Doug Gwynne goes for two, a fly
- 2:01:22ball to the right, and has popped to Oster at
- 2:01:24second in his two times up. Ron Hodges moves
- 2:01:38on deck to hit for Pat Zachary. That's with a
- 2:01:44three -run lead, five to two. Flynn pushes the
- 2:01:53bunt. First base side. Dreesen has it, but that'll
- 2:01:55be a foul ball. But Danny reaching across the
- 2:01:59first base foul line, trying to keep it fair.
- 2:02:03And now Dutch Renner smilingly talking with Dreesen
- 2:02:07and Seaver. Thankfully, Dreesen... In fair territory,
- 2:02:20feeling the ball, but drag it back across the
- 2:02:23foul line. Always wanted to count to Doug Flynn.
- 2:02:31Fever back to the plate. Flynn swings and fouls.
- 2:02:35Straight back and top and front on two. I'm the
- 2:02:560 -2. And that's in the dirt. Bouncing a couple
- 2:03:02of feet in front of the plate. 1 -2 to Flynn.
- 2:03:201 -2 pitch. Flynn swings and misses. A pitch
- 2:03:23down and away. And that's 6 -4. Receiver two
- 2:03:26away and Ron Hodges with it for Pat Zachary.
- 2:03:35Hodges hitting .412. That'll hold on three RBIs.
- 2:03:40As the pinch hitter, he's one for four. Hodges,
- 2:03:50a left -handed batter, steps in. DeLotte base
- 2:03:58is empty. Tom Sheets off the sign and now delivers
- 2:04:07to Hodges. Looks at a slow curve, but calls strike.
- 2:04:19Hodges away from the plate, now steps back in.
- 2:04:25The receiver lines and his 0 -1 delivery. Another
- 2:04:28slow curve. That's just under the knees. And
- 2:04:31that hodge is double hitching on that one. Down
- 2:04:35evens 1 -1. The receiver delivers the 1 -1. That's
- 2:04:46swung on and lined right at Dave Concepcion.
- 2:04:49Reaching above his head to pick it up. That's
- 2:04:53the inning, and Tom has now retired eight straight
- 2:04:55batters. And after seven, Reds five, Mets two.
- 2:05:03When you step into Lee Jeans, you're stepping
- 2:05:05into a tradition that dates back to 1889. Lee
- 2:05:08Jeans were just what America needed then, and
- 2:05:11they're what America needs right now. Rugged
- 2:05:13construction, 100 % cotton, and now the wrinkle
- 2:05:16-free characteristics of Lee's San Percet process.

- 2:05:59Street. Now the seven -inning totals show the
- 2:06:07Reds five runs, ten hits, and no errors. The
- 2:06:12Mets two runs, five hits, and one error. For
- 2:06:15the Reds, as they bat in the eighth inning, it'll
- 2:06:18be Dave Collins to lead it off. We have a new
- 2:06:20pitcher on the mound. for the New York Mets.
- 2:06:23And to tell you about him, here's Marty. Well,
- 2:06:25Joe, it's a young man making his first appearance.
- 2:06:28He's being called up on Monday from the Mets
- 2:06:31AAA Farm Club in Norfolk, Virginia, the Tidewater
- 2:06:34team. And at the left -hander, his name is Ray
- 2:06:36Searidge. This is going to be Searidge's Major
- 2:06:41League debut. He is a young man that... The Mets
- 2:06:45acquired by their Tidewater Farm Club from St.
- 2:06:48Louis for Jody Davis back on the 10th of December
- 2:06:50two years ago. So he originally started in the
- 2:06:55Cardinals organization and came to the Mets in
- 2:06:571979 and was just called up from Tidewater on
- 2:07:03Monday. Ray Searage, spell S -E -A -R -A -G -E,
- 2:07:07a left -hander, 6 '1", 180 -pounder from Freeport,
- 2:07:10New York. Now makes his home in St. Petersburg,
- 2:07:13Florida, and he's on to face the Reds here in
- 2:07:16the top half of the eighth inning. It'll be the
- 2:07:19top of the order up. Dave Collins, Ken Griffey,
- 2:07:22Dave Concepcion, the pitching line on Pat Zachary.
- 2:07:25He went seven, allowing ten base hits and five
- 2:07:28runs, only two of which were earned. Striking
- 2:07:31out six, walking four, and if the Reds' lead
- 2:07:35holds up, he would lose his seventh game of the
- 2:07:37season. The Reds fell behind 2 -0 tonight, but
- 2:07:44then tied it in the fourth inning on a single
- 2:07:46by Knight, a triple by Oster, and a single by
- 2:07:48Nolan. And then went out in front of the sixth
- 2:07:51inning with two down, Griffey singled the setter.
- 2:07:53Dave Concepcion reached on an error by third
- 2:07:56baseman Mike Cubbage, and Foster exploded a home
- 2:07:58run into the Reds' bullpen in left field to bring
- 2:08:03the score to its present 5 -2 count. They're
- 2:08:05in the last of the seventh at St. Louis. The
- 2:08:08Cardinals continuing to lead the Dodgers by a
- 2:08:10run at 2 -1. So Joe Torre figuring now is as
- 2:08:20good a time as any in terms of letting young
- 2:08:24Mr. Surge get his feet wet, Major League Baseball
- 2:08:28style. Collins is one for three, a single in
- 2:08:32the fourth inning. He was on a little second
- 2:08:34through a base on balls. Turning around to hit
- 2:08:40as a right -handed batter for the first time
- 2:08:41tonight. Here's Searidge's pitch, and Collins
- 2:08:50swings and hits it in the air to center field.
- 2:08:52Mookie Wilson drifting back, and he'll haul it
- 2:08:55in. One out. Again, we remind you in the event
- 2:09:02that a strike does come about tomorrow, that
- 2:09:06Joe and I will be... On the air at 8 .05 tomorrow
- 2:09:10night on our flagship station, WLW Radio in Cincinnati,
- 2:09:13as well as our network stations for a one -hour
- 2:09:20talk show beginning at 8 .05 Cincinnati time
- 2:09:22tomorrow night. And then we will be in Wichita
- 2:09:24Saturday night and Sunday night to bring you
- 2:09:27play -by -play coverage of the Reds' AAA Farm
- 2:09:29Club Indianapolis as they take on the Wichita
- 2:09:31team. That'll be Saturday night and Sunday night.
- 2:09:35The pitch is in for a call strike. Now the pregame
- 2:09:37show Saturday night at 8 o 'clock Cincinnati
- 2:09:39time and 7 o 'clock Cincinnati time on Sunday
- 2:09:43night. Otherwise, we would hope to be at Olympic
- 2:09:49Stadium in Montreal tomorrow night to begin that
- 2:09:52pregame weekend against the Expos. Line drive,
- 2:09:54base hit, left center field. Ken Griffey enjoys
- 2:09:57for himself a three -hit night. That's the 11th
- 2:10:05Cincinnati base hit. And it brings up Concepcion.
- 2:10:08Davey is one for four. He has scored a run. So
- 2:10:18Ken Griffey at first base with three hits and
- 2:10:20four times up. I'll make that three for five
- 2:10:23on the night. Sears looks for the sign, looks
- 2:10:38to first, delivers to the plate, and the fastball
- 2:10:41is over for a call strike. That single by Griffey
- 2:10:44puts his batting average at an even 300. Kenny
- 2:10:49adding some six points to his average tonight.
- 2:10:52He came in batting 294. That single puts him
- 2:10:54at 300, joining the likes of Dave Collins and
- 2:10:58George Foster and Dave Concepcion. 300 hitters,
- 2:11:03not to mention Joe Nolan, who also gets there
- 2:11:05tonight on the strength of a three -hit performance.
- 2:11:07There's a throw to first base. Five to two, the
- 2:11:17Reds lead the Mets in the eighth inning. Sears
- 2:11:22looking down for the side again from Trevino,
- 2:11:24and the one -strike pitch to Dave Concepcion
- 2:11:27after the long look at first is on the way. And
- 2:11:30that's a breaking ball on inside, 1 -1. Joe Nolan
- 2:11:45has jumped his batting average up to 3 -0 -4.
- 2:11:52One ball, one strike, one out, and one on, eighth
- 2:11:54inning action. And the throw to first base by
- 2:11:59the rookie left -hander. Montreal has shut out
- 2:12:03Atlanta 7 -0. Steve Rogers picks up his seventh
- 2:12:07victory of the season. Tommy Boggs is now 1 -10
- 2:12:10with the Atlanta Braves lost. Low and inside,
- 2:12:18two balls and a strike. Mike Lacoste scheduled
- 2:12:27to go for the Reds in the series opener in Montreal
- 2:12:29tomorrow night against right -hander Charlie
- 2:12:31Lee. Mike Lacoste, Ray Burris, Saturday, Sunday
- 2:12:35afternoon, Frank Pastore and Scott Chanderson.
- 2:12:37We hope we're playing. And a throw to first again,
- 2:12:44and Surage almost threw that one away. Rusty
- 2:12:47Stobb had to reach down and off his left. Hey,
- 2:12:5118 ,612. Attendance here tonight, 19 ,712. 19
- 2:13:05,712. That is far and away the best of the three
- 2:13:09nights we've spent here at Shea Stadium. Swing
- 2:13:12and a miss on a high fastball. Davey was looking
- 2:13:15for a heater, and that's what Searidge gave him.
- 2:13:17And he was spinning on it, but did not get it.
- 2:13:192 -2. Coming up next, George Foster. That's infield,
- 2:13:36a double play depth. The outfield about straight
- 2:13:39away for the right -handed batter. He strikes
- 2:13:42out swinging. Serge got him with a fastball away.
- 2:13:48Foster at the plate with two outs. Foster at
- 2:13:58the plate with two outs. George struck out in
- 2:14:03the first, did it again in the third, did it
- 2:14:05a third time in the fifth, but then turned things
- 2:14:07around with a line drive home run to left field
- 2:14:10with two on in the sixth inning to break the
- 2:14:11tie. Talk about a man that has really been cranking
- 2:14:21it up of late. He has now driven in 22 runs in
- 2:14:25his last 15 games, counting this one. Five doubles,
- 2:14:28a triple, six home runs, and 15 runs scored.
- 2:14:33And the home run extended his batting streak
- 2:14:35to nine games. During the nine -game batting
- 2:14:44streak, he's been hitting at a 4 -12 clip. Trevino
- 2:14:54sends out the sign. Foster waiting at the plate
- 2:14:57as the left -hander straightens up out of the
- 2:14:59stretch position and pours it plateward. It's
- 2:15:02a ball low. We certainly don't want to overlook
- 2:15:09the fact in talking about Ken Griffey and his
- 2:15:113 -for -5 performance tonight that Kenny is playing
- 2:15:15in his 1 ,000th Major League game. This one here.
- 2:15:19And has hit safely in 22 now out of his last
- 2:15:2227 games. So a milestone for Ken Griffey, Major
- 2:15:26League Game number 1 ,000, and he's had a good
- 2:15:28night. Foster is ahead two balls and no strikes.
- 2:15:37Reds are seeking their seventh consecutive win
- 2:15:40and hoping for another Cardinal victory over
- 2:15:42the Dodgers. It would allow the Reds to move
- 2:15:44to within a half a game of firsts. 2 -0 pitch
- 2:15:51with Griffey at first and two men out. Ground
- 2:15:56ball hit hard, but that's Doug Flynn. He, from
- 2:15:59a kneeling position, throws on to Bob Baylor
- 2:16:01at second for the fourth out. And in the Cincinnati
- 2:16:04eighth inning, no runs, one hit and one left.
- 2:16:06After seven and a half, the Reds lead the Mets
- 2:16:095 -2. You can win more when you pick four. The

- 2:16:31the pot. With all those people playing it, well,
- 2:16:35you could win a lot. The Ohio Lottery's weekly

- 2:17:16York batting order as we move to the home half
- 2:17:18of the eighth inning. Sam Mahias has replaced
- 2:17:19Dave Collins down in the right field position.
- 2:17:24And Tom Seaver, right now on a roll. He's retired
- 2:17:27eight batters in a row. He has limited the Mets
- 2:17:30to only one hit over the last four innings. They've
- 2:17:34had a total of five hits on the night, and three
- 2:17:36of them came in the second when they scored one
- 2:17:38of their two runs. Only hit over the last four.
- 2:17:43A double in the fifth inning by the man leading
- 2:17:45off the eighth, Mookie Wilson. He's the last
- 2:17:52man to reach base for New York. Receiver climbs
- 2:18:07back on top of the mound. Turning around, taking
- 2:18:12a look at his defensive alignment as he is wont
- 2:18:14to do on occasion. Delivers to Wilson, pass ball
- 2:18:18up. Ball one. The winningest pitchers in the
- 2:18:24National League right now are Valenzuela and
- 2:18:26Carlton. There's a swing and a miss. Carlton
- 2:18:30picked up his ninth win last night against only
- 2:18:32one defeat when the Phillies came up with five
- 2:18:35eighth inning runs to beat Houston. And Valenzuela
- 2:18:38with nine wins, shooting for his tenth tonight,
- 2:18:40but trailing by a run in the seventh inning at
- 2:18:42St. Louis. The only eight -game winner is Dick
- 2:18:46Ruthen of the Phillies. He's lost three times,
- 2:18:48and Seaver with a win tonight would join Bert
- 2:18:51Hoop to the Dodgers as a seven -game winner.
- 2:18:55Two balls and one strike on Speedy Wilson. Ray
- 2:19:00Knight, shallow on the grass at third. Seaver
- 2:19:04continues to work quickly, and Wilson with a
- 2:19:06bad handle foul back, squares the count at two.
- 2:19:08In the eighth at Toronto, Royals seven, Blue
- 2:19:11Jays five. New York down a run to the White Sox,
- 2:19:14three to two after five innings at Comiskey Park.
- 2:19:17The Rangers and the Brewers are tied up at three
- 2:19:19-three after six and a half. Tigers are being
- 2:19:23shut out two to nothing by Minnesota. That pitch
- 2:19:27is high for a ball, three and two, and they're
- 2:19:29getting rain up at Bloomington. Seaver with a
- 2:19:353 -2 pitch. And Wilson hanging top of the foul
- 2:19:39butt. At the present time, both bullpens are
- 2:19:50quiet. Again, the payoff pitch. And Wilson slings,
- 2:19:57and he misses. He got him. That is 7 for Seaver.
- 2:20:04And that is nine in a row that have come and
- 2:20:06gone. He'll work to Bob Baylor. Baylor has flied
- 2:20:11to right, sacrificed, and popped up to second
- 2:20:13base. Baylor grounds one to the left side. A
- 2:20:29base hit. Now the ball momentarily bobbled by
- 2:20:36Foster, but he recovers in time. Baylor down
- 2:20:39three in the late innings. He's not going to
- 2:20:40chance being thrown out at second. We'll pause
- 2:20:43for station identification once again. This is
- 2:20:45the Cincinnati Reds Baseball Network. Make Mark
- 2:20:49Clark a regular part of your day. Mark Clark,
- 2:20:5110 to 2 here at K95. Mark passes along great
- 2:20:54information, makes way for the midday report
- 2:20:56of news service at noon, and plays great kick
- 2:20:58and country music. Mark Clark at K95. W -H -O
- 2:21:01-K -F -M. Lancaster. Ellis Valentine with Bob
- 2:21:05Baylor at first and then out. Gentless in two
- 2:21:08official trips. He's had a sacrifice fly. He
- 2:21:11takes the ball. Bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:21:15Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1. Valenzuela is out. Left
- 2:21:19-hander Steve Howe is now pitching in relief
- 2:21:21for Los Angeles. This Mets crowd starved for
- 2:21:30something to get excited about. Trying to get
- 2:21:34their ball club going. Valentine pops it up.
- 2:21:39He slings the bat away as the ball nestles into
- 2:21:42the net of third baseman Ray Knight. Two away.
- 2:21:49Here's Kingman. As Homer walked and struck out.
- 2:22:13Well, now with a runner at first base, they'll
- 2:22:15still put the shift on to Kingman. Checks his
- 2:22:21swing. It's a ball just off the outside edge.
- 2:22:29Now Lee Weier going out toward the mound to take
- 2:22:32a look at the baseball. Kingman might have said
- 2:22:37something to the plate on fire, and he checks
- 2:22:40it out and gives it back to Seaver. Cincinnati
- 2:22:50bullpen is busy. Tommy Hume, Joe Price. Baylor
- 2:22:58leading at first and a 1 -0 pitch to Dave Kingman
- 2:23:00is swung on and grounded to third. Ray Knight
- 2:23:02has it, looks to second, instead goes to Dreesen.
- 2:23:05And the inning is over. No runs, one hit, one
- 2:23:08left. We've played eight, and the Reds lead the
- 2:23:11Mets 5 -2. The names of the places suit the straightforward
- 2:23:16nature of the people who live there. The Sweetwater
- 2:23:20River. The Crazy Mountains. Twin Sisters Utes.
- 2:23:25Last Chance Gulch. Roaring Springs, Texas. Immigrant
- 2:23:30Montana. Playing up front names that let you
- 2:23:33know pretty much what you're getting into before
- 2:23:35you get there. Here, then, is a bush beer to
- 2:23:38the best of the West. The straightforward names
- 2:23:41and the straightforward people who invented them.
- 2:23:44Bush. Head for the beer that always goes down
- 2:23:48smooth as a mountain stream. Bush. Brewed just
- 2:23:52one way, the natural way, for a taste that's
- 2:23:56always as smooth as its name. Bush. Head for
- 2:24:01Bush. Head for Bush. Head for Bush. Head for
- 2:24:08Bush. Here we go to the top half of the ninth
- 2:24:19inning. Second inning of work for young left
- 2:24:22-hander Ray Sirich, who was touched for a one
- 2:24:24-out hit in the eighth inning by Ken Griffey,
- 2:24:26but then picked up his first Major League strikeout,
- 2:24:29retiring Dave Concepcion and getting George Foster
- 2:24:33to bounce into a forced play at second base.
- 2:24:36Danny Greeson will lead it off. He's walked twice,
- 2:24:38flied out to center, and then flied out to deep
- 2:24:41right field. That was at his last plate appearance
- 2:24:44in the sixth inning. And Seaver would go 7 -1
- 2:24:56with a win. Zachary would go 5 -7 with a loss.
- 2:24:59And the Reds would have seven consecutive victories.
- 2:25:04But we've still got an inning more of baseball
- 2:25:06to play here. Danny Dreesen heading toward the
- 2:25:15plate. Well, we've had good weather conditions
- 2:25:31here in New York, although the first day in here,
- 2:25:33and probably more so yesterday when it rained
- 2:25:37off and on all day, but then around 6 o 'clock
- 2:25:40last night or a little bit later, it started
- 2:25:42to lighten up, and by game time, we had nothing
- 2:25:46but blue skies. Today was a beautiful day here.
- 2:25:50The pitch to Dreesen is taken high of all. Five
- 2:26:00runs, 11 hits for Cincinnati. Two runs, six hits,
- 2:26:02and a big error for New York, and a big one it
- 2:26:04was by Mike Kovic. Dreesen moves away from the
- 2:26:08pitch in on him, 2 -0. Danny Dreesen batting
- 2:26:15at even 300 against left -handed pitching. 30
- 2:26:19at -bats against left -handers and nine base
- 2:26:21hits. Swung on and popped up into shallow left
- 2:26:34field. Going out Baylor, coming in Kingman. Kingman
- 2:26:36calls and makes the catch. One up. Ray Knight
- 2:26:44up for the fifth time. He's had one hit. That
- 2:26:48was an infield single deep and shortstop to lead
- 2:26:50off the fourth inning. If you're looking ahead
- 2:27:02to the bottom of the ninth inning for New York,
- 2:27:04it's going to be Rusty Staub, Mike Cubbage, and
- 2:27:06Alex Trevino. Night grounds one, and to left
- 2:27:13field, a base hit by Cubbage, by Bob Baylor.
- 2:27:21Second hit off Ray Searidge. And now Ronnie Oster
- 2:27:26with a triple and three times on the plate, an
- 2:27:27RBI, and a run scored. 2 .95 average for the
- 2:27:31Cincinnati second baseman with 25 RBIs and a
- 2:27:34home run. That was just a step off the grass
- 2:27:52at third as Sherrod looks to first, delivers,
- 2:27:54Oster swings and misses. Ronnie, a switch hitter,
- 2:28:03up there batting right -handed. Getting .268
- 2:28:08from the right side of the plate and .304 from
- 2:28:10the left side. Swing and a miss, strike two.
- 2:28:22Searidge with a good pitch down and Oster quickly
- 2:28:24falling behind 0 -2. We've got a good promotional
- 2:28:38idea here at Shea Stadium. Collectors cards and
- 2:28:41series. 62 Mets teams, 69 world champions, 73
- 2:28:46National League champs, and Mets managers. That
- 2:28:52pitch is inside for a ball. Four different days
- 2:28:54they'll be giving the memory series, the magic
- 2:29:00memory series, as they call them, away throughout
- 2:29:02the course of the season. Imagine the baseball
- 2:29:07card collectors would probably be more than a
- 2:29:11little bit interested in that four different
- 2:29:15series of cards. One ball and two strikes to
- 2:29:20count on Oster. Ronnie got around on a breaking
- 2:29:23ball, and Searidge has his second strikeout.
- 2:29:30So with two out, Ray, our Joe Nolan will be looking
- 2:29:33for his fourth hit of the night. Single to the
- 2:29:39right center in the second. Knocked in a run
- 2:29:41with a base hit to center in the fourth. Grounded
- 2:29:43out in the fifth and double to right center in
- 2:29:45the seventh inning. Ray Knight aboard with a
- 2:29:58one -out hit to left. They're two away now in
- 2:30:01the top half of the ninth inning. Nolan with
- 2:30:05a smash. Base hit right field. His fourth hit.
- 2:30:09Going to second and holding there is Ray Knight.
- 2:30:13We've talked so much during the night or certainly
- 2:30:16earlier in the early innings about Tom Sieber
- 2:30:19starting here against his former club. Not really
- 2:30:24by any means overlooking the fact that Tom gets
- 2:30:26another big hand from the Shea Stadium crowd
- 2:30:29that Joe Nolan started his career in the New
- 2:30:32York Mets organization and appeared briefly.
- 2:30:36on a number of years with a mess back in the
- 2:30:3870s. So you might say that he has come home,
- 2:30:41so to speak, tonight and come home in a big way.
- 2:30:43Four hits and five trips. Seavers 0 for 3. 9th
- 2:30:56to lead runner. He's stationed at 2nd. Nolan
- 2:30:59with a hit to right at 1st. The pitch from Sears
- 2:31:08to Severs, swung on, fly ball, hit to Wells,
- 2:31:10center field, but Wilson gets back on it and
- 2:31:12makes the catch. No runs in the ninth, two hits,
- 2:31:15two left. Home ninth inning coming up, and the
- 2:31:18Mets trail the Reds 5 -2. How fussy are you when
- 2:31:22it comes to picking a gasoline? Whatever's closest.
- 2:31:25That fussy, huh? There is a difference, you know.
- 2:31:27There is? Uh -huh. All Marathon brand gasolines.
- 2:31:31Super M lead -free, that's the premium gasoline.
- 2:31:33MileMaker regular for older cars that can still
- 2:31:36use a leaded gas. And MileMaker lead -free. Have
- 2:31:38Marathon's new special additive. Or what's special
- 2:31:41about the new additive? I thought you'd never
- 2:31:43ask. It's designed to keep your engine running
- 2:31:45cleaner. And a cleaner engine can mean you'll
- 2:31:48get more efficient fuel economy and your car
- 2:31:50will drive better. So it won't get that sluggish
- 2:31:52feeling. Right. And of course, the better shape
- 2:31:54your engine's in, the less maintenance it needs.
- 2:31:57I like saving money. And the less chance of your
- 2:31:59car emitting pollutants. Your Marathon man can
- 2:32:01tell you all about it because he really cares
- 2:32:03about helping you take care of your car. And
- 2:32:06one of the ways he can do that is by offering
- 2:32:08you a better product. Like Marathon's new gasoline?
- 2:32:10You got it. You know something? I think I just
- 2:32:13got fussy about my gasoline. Marathon. With the
- 2:32:17long -distance gasolines. Best in the long run.
- 2:32:25New York needing three runs to get even as we
- 2:32:27go to the home ninth inning. Tom Seaver three
- 2:32:31outs away from his fifth complete game of the
- 2:32:33season. And his seventh win overall, Tommy Hume
- 2:32:39and Joe Price, as we look into the bullpen, are
- 2:32:43back up and getting ready just in the event that
- 2:32:45Tom might need some ninth inning help. Rusty
- 2:32:50Staub owns one of the six New York kids. That
- 2:32:52was a single in the second. Since that time,
- 2:32:55he's flied to right and in the sixth inning bounced
- 2:32:56out to Danny Dreesen. All around the Reds infield,
- 2:33:05and now Sieber gets it back for Murray Knight.
- 2:33:18Sieber back behind the mound, hands on hips.
- 2:33:25Got off to a somewhat rocky start, but has really
- 2:33:29settled down since the fourth inning. The pitch
- 2:33:31is in for a strike. From the fourth inning on,
- 2:33:35he's given them no runs on two base hits. And
- 2:33:38jumps out in front on Staub. No balls and a strike.
- 2:33:46That's Lowe. And it's inside. 1 -1. All right,
- 2:33:59he underwinds, he kicks and he fires, and Staub
- 2:34:01swings and fouls it back. That one got off the
- 2:34:03end of Joe Nolan's mitt and then carried on back
- 2:34:05to the screen. Ball two strikes. Seavers walked
- 2:34:09only one batter, and that was Kingman in the
- 2:34:11third inning while striking out seven. Giving
- 2:34:16him a seasonal total of 52 strikeouts. And he's
- 2:34:22popped Rusty Staub up. Ronnie Oster looking skyward,
- 2:34:26backing on the outfield grass one out. Now Mike
- 2:34:35Covage will take his shot. It's 0 for 3, but
- 2:34:37three straight times he's hit it on the button.
- 2:34:43And getting on Covage a little bit, remembering
- 2:34:50the error that he committed back in the sixth
- 2:34:53inning that paved the way for George Foster's
- 2:34:55three -run home run that fractured the 2 -2 tie.
- 2:35:01Covage looks at a strike. Mike getting 219, three
- 2:35:13RBIs, homerless on the year. Pitch. Slow curve
- 2:35:24and just missed for a ball. One ball, one strike.
- 2:35:36On deck, Alex Trevino. Seaver bringing it up
- 2:35:41there, and this one is popped up. Going out in
- 2:35:45shallow center is Dave Concepcion. Griffey calls
- 2:35:48him off the ball, and Kenny hauls it in, and
- 2:35:50they're two out. Well, now Trevino, as Seaver,
- 2:35:58seeks to get the match out in order for the fifth
- 2:36:03time tonight. Did it in the first, in the fourth,
- 2:36:06in the sixth, in the seventh. And it's an out
- 2:36:09away from doing it in the ninth inning to nail
- 2:36:11it down. Tom Seitz assigned the line to pitch,
- 2:36:23and Trevino checking. It's low at the ball. Almost
- 2:36:27went too far, but held up in time. Swing and
- 2:36:39a miss. The 35th victory on the year against
- 2:36:4521 losses for Cincinnati. In the sweep of this
- 2:36:50three -game series against New York. Foul ball
- 2:36:54back to the plate by Trevino. A ball, two strikes.
- 2:36:58Receiver, a strike away. Now they start to applaud
- 2:37:03his efforts here at Shea Stadium. Covino puts
- 2:37:07the head of the bat on the plate, cocks it. Seaver
- 2:37:09double pumps on the mound, and here it comes.
- 2:37:12And he's up high and inside with a curveball.
- 2:37:15Two and two. Now they start to stand at Shea
- 2:37:23Stadium as he brings it back to the plate. And
- 2:37:25a ground ball to shortstop. Concepcion to Danny
- 2:37:28Dreesen. And this one belongs to the Reds. Tom
- 2:37:32Seaver with another outstanding pitching performance.
- 2:37:36As he comes into Shea Stadium and goes the distance
- 2:37:38in beating the Mets 5 -2, a sweep for the Reds
- 2:37:41in their seventh consecutive victory. We'll be
- 2:37:44back in just a moment.
