- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds
- 0:12Speaker 1: with Greg Cosel. I'm Jeff Mosher and I got Greg
- 0:14Speaker 1: Cosell with me here to break down the tape as
- 0:17Speaker 1: he does every week, of the Eagles and their opponent,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and of course Greg. Before we start, we just want
- 0:23Speaker 1: to wish all of our listeners and our viewers happy holidays,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Merry Christmas, happy Honka, happy Kwanza, whatever you celebrate, we
- 0:31Speaker 1: wish you the best. And of course Greg, the Eagles
- 0:32Speaker 1: are celebrating a clinch miss themselves as they finally clinched
- 0:36Speaker 1: the NFC East. I'm good, I'm good.
- 0:38Speaker 2: You're working on that all day. I bet standing in
- 0:40Speaker 2: front of the mirror.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm actually ready to end the show right now.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, the mic drop happened. We're done, that's right.
- 0:49Speaker 1: But the Eagles did clinch the NFC East for the
- 0:51Speaker 1: second street year, and they're the first team in over
- 0:53Speaker 1: twenty years to do that. And I want to start
- 0:55Speaker 1: off with you going through the offensive tape because what
- 0:59Speaker 1: I find really interesting thing about the Eagles, and this
- 1:01Speaker 1: is either a positive we'll talk about it, or just
- 1:05Speaker 1: an example of how difficult things have been for them
- 1:08Speaker 1: this year. But if you take what they did against
- 1:11Speaker 1: the Raiders and then compare that to what they did
- 1:14Speaker 1: offensively schematically against the Commanders, it was almost like two
- 1:17Speaker 1: different offenses. And I wonder, as we look back a
- 1:21Speaker 1: little bit. The Raiders, we talked about you want to
- 1:24Speaker 1: run the ball, you come out in thirteen personnel cam
- 1:27Speaker 1: Law two three tight ends on the first drive. Not
- 1:30Speaker 1: necessarily the same here in this game. A lot more spread,
- 1:33Speaker 1: a lot more empty passing to begin with. I do
- 1:36Speaker 1: wonder if cam Law two's not his being unavailable has
- 1:41Speaker 1: anything to do with that. But it seems to me,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and I'll ask you and your viewpoint on this, just
- 1:45Speaker 1: to me that this was just going to be the
- 1:46Speaker 1: plan against this beat up Commander's defense that was weak
- 1:49Speaker 1: in the secondary was spread them out and throw on them.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean obviously they threw the ball. I mean,
- 1:56Speaker 2: Hurts ended up with thirty seven dropbacks. He had twenty
- 1:59Speaker 2: two in them in the first half. So for them,
- 2:01Speaker 2: that's a very high number. There are a game where
- 2:03Speaker 2: he has twenty two in the entire game and they
- 2:06Speaker 2: and they look very good with their offense. In fact,
- 2:08Speaker 2: that's probably closer to their template. But I would say
- 2:11Speaker 2: even with that, this game struck me as looking more
- 2:15Speaker 2: like the Eagles offense of a year ago. Even though
- 2:18Speaker 2: there were thirty seven dropbacks, you know, they didn't really
- 2:22Speaker 2: push the ball down the field. There were no outside
- 2:24Speaker 2: the numbers vertical throws in this game. Everything was condensed,
- 2:28Speaker 2: but in a good way. I mean, it was very efficient.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It was that's sort of the offense we've come to
- 2:33Speaker 2: expect from the Eagles, even going back last year in
- 2:35Speaker 2: the Super Bowl season. So I came away, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 2: it's fun. I was watching. Obviously, I watched the game
- 2:41Speaker 2: on TV because it was there were no other games.
- 2:43Speaker 2: It wasn't red Zone. It was Saturday, So I watched
- 2:45Speaker 2: the game on TV. And as I was watching, and
- 2:47Speaker 2: I kind of felt like, you know, this looks a
- 2:49Speaker 2: little more like the Eagles offense. And even the throws,
- 2:53Speaker 2: there was a sense of timing and rhythm with Jalen Hurts.
- 2:55Speaker 2: With a lot of the throws. It wasn't he wasn't
- 2:56Speaker 2: getting stuck in the pocket, he wasn't running around that
- 2:59Speaker 2: he was hit his back foot, the ball was coming out. Now,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it's a division team, they might have had a great
- 3:04Speaker 2: feel for what they were going to get. Obviously, that
- 3:07Speaker 2: does factor in. You want to run what you do well,
- 3:09Speaker 2: but you're all you also are playing an opponent that
- 3:12Speaker 2: you are game planning for, and they knew this team well,
- 3:15Speaker 2: and they know Dan quinnwell, he's been in the league
- 3:17Speaker 2: a long time. But I thought it just I came
- 3:20Speaker 2: away even Saturday night, before I even watch the tape,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, Monday morning. First thing, I came away from
- 3:27Speaker 2: the game feeling like that kind of looked like the
- 3:29Speaker 2: Eagles offense. And I think that's a real positive going forward, obviously,
- 3:33Speaker 2: And we'll talk about this later in the week, and
- 3:35Speaker 2: I'm sure I'll get asked some about it. With the
- 3:36Speaker 2: Patreon grew, obviously, they're playing a tough opponent, tougher than
- 3:40Speaker 2: the Commanders, you know then you know, with the Bills.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But still, you know, I kind of felt like, Okay,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, I think we're moving in the right direction.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And I'll tell you what and just research. You know, Normally,
- 3:53Speaker 2: I watch and then things hit me, and then I
- 3:55Speaker 2: look up numbers as I'm hitting, as you know, as
- 3:57Speaker 2: I'm watching the tape and as I'm watching the Commander's game,
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, I'm just noticing the running and I'm feeling
- 4:03Speaker 2: like they have running the ball. The O line is
- 4:06Speaker 2: moving people and they're running the ball well. And I
- 4:09Speaker 2: was amazed to see that Barkley over the last three
- 4:12Speaker 2: games has the most rushes of any back in the
- 4:14Speaker 2: league and the second most yards amazingly enough behind Tony Pollard.
- 4:19Speaker 2: No one would have guessed that, but he has the
- 4:21Speaker 2: most ten plus yard runs in the last three weeks. So,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, the run game this week to me, you know,
- 4:28Speaker 2: as I was watching it and seeing the O line
- 4:30Speaker 2: move people, I was thinking, this is kind of what
- 4:33Speaker 2: we saw last year.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yes, yes, that would probably be the biggest encouragement is
- 4:38Speaker 1: that you're seeing the O line move people again. And
- 4:41Speaker 1: so where I struggle with reconciling it, and I think
- 4:44Speaker 1: you're a good person asked because you watch multiple teams,
- 4:47Speaker 1: is that the Eagles still seems to be trying to
- 4:50Speaker 1: find an identity and it seems to look different week
- 4:54Speaker 1: after week.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Now.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I know some teams are good like that they can
- 4:57Speaker 1: change if they need to, to adapt to the opponent. I
- 5:00Speaker 1: think the Eagles have been doing it throughout the year,
- 5:02Speaker 1: just to try to figure out what's working best for
- 5:04Speaker 1: them right when a lot of things were failing. So
- 5:07Speaker 1: I guess in my mind I also see encouragement. But
- 5:10Speaker 1: I wonder if an Eagles offense that looked against the Commanders,
- 5:15Speaker 1: like a last year ego as offense right, would look
- 5:17Speaker 1: that way against the playoff defense.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And you know, we'll get a good good feel for
- 5:21Speaker 2: that when they played Buffalo, because Buffalo is going to
- 5:23Speaker 2: have to win that game. I mean, and the Eagles theoretically,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you know, can keep winning and who knows what happens,
- 5:29Speaker 2: you know with other teams, you know, you never know.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Could the Eagles end up being the two seed? They could,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I mean, you never know. So it's not the Eagles
- 5:38Speaker 2: are not going to pack it in this Sunday. They're
- 5:40Speaker 2: playing to win. So you don't know the answer to that.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Although I would say this about the identity part, I
- 5:46Speaker 2: bet the Eagles wouldn't say that. I think they do
- 5:49Speaker 2: have an identity. I just think the identity wasn't working.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I don't think they were searching for an identity. I
- 5:56Speaker 2: think the identity wasn't working.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Well, I think that's my Yes, you're right, it wasn't working,
- 6:01Speaker 1: so they were looking for alternative ways to be functional
- 6:04Speaker 1: when their identity wasn't working.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Right, But I don't think, but I and maybe it's semantics,
- 6:09Speaker 2: it could be, but I don't think that they were
- 6:12Speaker 2: trying to find a different way to play that they
- 6:15Speaker 2: felt was their best way to play. I think they
- 6:18Speaker 2: were clearly trying to find a way that would work
- 6:21Speaker 2: given that their identity wasn't working. But they didn't leave
- 6:24Speaker 2: their identity at the door. They want to be. This
- 6:28Speaker 2: is what they want to be, right, you know, and
- 6:30Speaker 2: this is what they're best suited to be. Yes, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: so you know, and in this game, with the run
- 6:36Speaker 2: game in particular, you know, other than the Rams game,
- 6:39Speaker 2: would excuse me, the Giants game when obviously Barkley had
- 6:42Speaker 2: the big run early and they rushed for a lot
- 6:44Speaker 2: of yards. Other than that game, really the identity hasn't
- 6:49Speaker 2: been what it was a year ago. I mean, this
- 6:51Speaker 2: game played out the way many games a year ago
- 6:53Speaker 2: played out, where they didn't necessarily blow teams out early,
- 6:56Speaker 2: and then in the second half Barkley had some big
- 6:59Speaker 2: runs and all of a sudden, the game, you know,
- 7:01Speaker 2: was thirty one to ten, and you felt like, wow,
- 7:04Speaker 2: they blew some people out, but they they did, and
- 7:06Speaker 2: they didn't, you know, But that's you know, and the
- 7:10Speaker 2: thing that really stood out to me, as you saw
- 7:12Speaker 2: in my notes, was you know, the no huddle and
- 7:15Speaker 2: the empty and again, whether that's something they'll continue to
- 7:18Speaker 2: do now they've done that in a number of games
- 7:21Speaker 2: this year. That was something they that they didn't just
- 7:23Speaker 2: come up with in this game. They've done that in
- 7:25Speaker 2: I mean even games they've lost. I mean against Chicago
- 7:28Speaker 2: when they were down ten to three, they go, they
- 7:31Speaker 2: go no huddle. You know, Hurtz has a twenty three
- 7:33Speaker 2: yard run on a designed run. I think it was
- 7:36Speaker 2: a design run. And then the next place the Brown,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, thirty three yard touchdown, something like that. You know,
- 7:41Speaker 2: I mean you can go through the whole season and
- 7:43Speaker 2: you know they go, they go no huddle, empty, I
- 7:46Speaker 2: mean particularly no huddle. And that's something like on the
- 7:50Speaker 2: second possession in this game this past week, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 2: against the Commanders, that second possession was a ton of
- 7:56Speaker 2: no huddle.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yes, and I feel like that was a byproduct of
- 8:00Speaker 1: them actually moving the change. They were ahead of the sticks,
- 8:02Speaker 1: they had positive passes, do go no.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Huddle, And it's a high high percentage of the time
- 8:09Speaker 2: out of eleven personnel.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Right, yep. Definitely. So let's talk about your your notes
- 8:14Speaker 1: on the tape and what you saw. And again, just
- 8:17Speaker 1: like last week against the Raiders, something that they had
- 8:20Speaker 1: done throughout the season really did a lot was going
- 8:23Speaker 1: under center against the Raiders. In this game, to your point,
- 8:27Speaker 1: something that they've done periodically throughout the year is going
- 8:30Speaker 1: spread empty. They've been doing that more lately, and then
- 8:33Speaker 1: they seem to do more of it against the Commanders
- 8:36Speaker 1: than they have all year. That was clearly intentional on
- 8:39Speaker 1: their part. What benefit did you see from them going
- 8:42Speaker 1: spread empty and what does that typically do for a team?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Well, there's two elements to that, what you're talking about,
- 8:51Speaker 2: just spread empty or no huddle as well, because I
- 8:53Speaker 2: think there's the no huddle factors in as well.
- 8:56Speaker 1: But yeah, well you combine it. Yeah, I mean they've
- 8:59Speaker 1: got I would say they've gone no huddle a lot
- 9:01Speaker 1: in the past, but they haven't gone this much spread empty, right.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I would say that that the empty part really allows
- 9:09Speaker 2: Hurts to get a really good feel for the defense
- 9:15Speaker 2: because when you're spread, the defense has to respond to
- 9:18Speaker 2: the spread part. You know, it's very hard to camouflage
- 9:22Speaker 2: and conceal what you're doing defensively. Now, there are some coaches,
- 9:26Speaker 2: you know, I know Rex Ryan always said, hey, if
- 9:28Speaker 2: you go empty, we're going after your quarterback. But you know,
- 9:31Speaker 2: there's there's not many coaches that believe that. And because
- 9:34Speaker 2: you've got to cover people, and if you're spread, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 2: the defense has to spread to some degree. And I guarantee,
- 9:40Speaker 2: based on film study, they know what a defense is
- 9:44Speaker 2: going to do against empty Look. You know there's you know,
- 9:46Speaker 2: there's twenty coaches. I guarantee in every game they play,
- 9:50Speaker 2: there's somebody on the staff, whether it's you know, a coach,
- 9:52Speaker 2: whether it's a scout, somebody is being told, hey, this
- 9:56Speaker 2: is our opponent. I want you to go back and
- 9:58Speaker 2: look at every snap that this defense has played against
- 10:01Speaker 2: empty all the year long. You know, they can call
- 10:03Speaker 2: that stuff up. I wish I could, you know, but
- 10:05Speaker 2: I don't work for a team, so I don't have
- 10:06Speaker 2: their systems. You know, they can probably call that up
- 10:09Speaker 2: and see it in you know, and then they look
- 10:11Speaker 2: at all the plays, whether there's fifteen of them or
- 10:14Speaker 2: one hundred of them, they're gonna look at all the
- 10:16Speaker 2: plays and they're gonna have a very good feel for
- 10:18Speaker 2: what a specific team's defense does against empty sets, and
- 10:23Speaker 2: they're gonna know you know, because more than likely you're
- 10:26Speaker 2: not getting six different coverages, Jeff, you're probably getting two
- 10:30Speaker 2: different coverages, maybe three at most. You know, you're not
- 10:33Speaker 2: you know, so you're going to know the answer to
- 10:35Speaker 2: the test basically before you take the test. And so
- 10:39Speaker 2: it really helps the quarterback.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And in this case, I thought, Greg, and is this
- 10:44Speaker 1: normal that it also opens up lanes more running lanes
- 10:47Speaker 1: for the quarterback, because we.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Did say it depending on how the team plays, I mean,
- 10:51Speaker 2: more than likely you're you're certainly not going to get
- 10:54Speaker 2: a seven man box because you know, depending on your
- 10:57Speaker 2: empty formation. But if it's spread, like you said, you're
- 11:00Speaker 2: not going to get a seven man box because they
- 11:02Speaker 2: need to get people outside to deal with the you know,
- 11:04Speaker 2: the empty formation. So you're going to get a six
- 11:07Speaker 2: man box, and you might even get a five man
- 11:09Speaker 2: box with an overhang player. And then then if there's
- 11:14Speaker 2: only really true one stacked player, there's really no cutback
- 11:19Speaker 2: defender in the run game at the second level.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Right right, All right, Well, let's talk about the run
- 11:25Speaker 1: game because last week we saw some gap scheme runs
- 11:27Speaker 1: and you noted that there were more and then also,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I mean, I think Barkley probably fought from more yards
- 11:34Speaker 1: and gained more tough yards this game than all your
- 11:37Speaker 1: even again hit a lot. I'm not trying to say
- 11:39Speaker 1: he has some tough but you really just saw him
- 11:41Speaker 1: will his way to yards this game.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I thought this that that Barkley looked really good in
- 11:46Speaker 2: this game, and I made that point in my notes.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I thought that, you know, he showed great patience, he
- 11:51Speaker 2: showed vision, and then then when he saw it, he
- 11:54Speaker 2: hit it with burst. And and when he has bursts,
- 11:56Speaker 2: because he's a big man who's powerful, then the power
- 12:00Speaker 2: comes into play as well. I thought he was decisive
- 12:02Speaker 2: in this game. You know, look, even if you think
- 12:05Speaker 2: you see a hole but it closes, if you hit
- 12:08Speaker 2: it with burst and his strength and decisiveness, you're going
- 12:11Speaker 2: to get those hard yards. And you know, I thought
- 12:14Speaker 2: this game he was as decisive as he's been in
- 12:18Speaker 2: any game. And I thought it was the best combination
- 12:20Speaker 2: of the old line moving people and creating increases and
- 12:23Speaker 2: Barkley being the absolute desirable combination of patient and decisive,
- 12:29Speaker 2: and it just it looked really good, you know, because
- 12:31Speaker 2: the key to the run game. Yeah, it's great when
- 12:33Speaker 2: you see the forty eight yard run and he spins
- 12:35Speaker 2: and you know, we all love that, but the key
- 12:37Speaker 2: to the run game is the seven yard runs. It
- 12:39Speaker 2: seemed like that's what he did last year on every run,
- 12:42Speaker 2: and you know this year there have been few and
- 12:44Speaker 2: far between, and we saw a lot of those in
- 12:47Speaker 2: this game.
- 12:48Speaker 1: What did you notice about god Urs role in the
- 12:52Speaker 1: absence of lats was he asked to be a little
- 12:54Speaker 1: bit more of a blocker instead of.
- 12:57Speaker 2: It's funny because I thought it was Calcatara that was
- 13:00Speaker 2: asked to do some more that because he he was
- 13:02Speaker 2: used as a rapper in the gap scheme run game,
- 13:05Speaker 2: where he was working up obviously not blocking on the
- 13:08Speaker 2: line of scrimmage against defensive ends, but working through the
- 13:11Speaker 2: line of scrimmage to block second level defenders. And he
- 13:14Speaker 2: actually didn't do a bad job at all. You know,
- 13:17Speaker 2: It's funny people cherry picked because I saw on Twitter
- 13:19Speaker 2: today somebody showed Goddard missing a block okay, and people
- 13:22Speaker 2: were acting like, oh my god, Goddard can't block. They
- 13:25Speaker 2: better get a tight up to the block. You know,
- 13:27Speaker 2: you can do that with any play with anybody, you know. So.
- 13:31Speaker 2: But but the point is, that's what I noticed about
- 13:33Speaker 2: how they deployed Calkatara because you know, obviously he's not
- 13:37Speaker 2: a line of scrimmage one on one block defensive ends.
- 13:40Speaker 2: That's not who he is and he's not likely it
- 13:42Speaker 2: to ever be that guy. But you know, then you
- 13:45Speaker 2: use him in a different way where he's in, he's moving,
- 13:48Speaker 2: he's working through, he's blocking, you know, a second or
- 13:51Speaker 2: a third level defender, depending because when you're a rapper
- 13:54Speaker 2: in a gap scheme run game. So just so people understand,
- 13:56Speaker 2: normally in a gap scheme run game, there's what we
- 13:59Speaker 2: call two pullars. The first puller is the kickout blocker's
- 14:03Speaker 2: he's blocking the widest defender on the line of scrimmage. Okay,
- 14:07Speaker 2: the rapper is the second guy, and he works through
- 14:10Speaker 2: the hole up to the second level, so he blocks
- 14:13Speaker 2: the first second level defender who shows. It's normally a linebacker,
- 14:17Speaker 2: it could be a safety's it's the first second level
- 14:20Speaker 2: defender who shows. So now you're asking Calcuatara to block
- 14:23Speaker 2: that guy, which he certainly can do a lot better
- 14:26Speaker 2: that he can block one on one. You know, a
- 14:29Speaker 2: mono on mono versus a defensive end.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Right right less thing on the run game. I know
- 14:36Speaker 1: you noted this. The Eagles form formationally, what are they
- 14:39Speaker 1: doing in the run game as far as inside zone,
- 14:42Speaker 1: outside zone, Yeah, compared to last year.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Well, this year, this game was a lot more zone base.
- 14:47Speaker 2: They did run some gap scheme. Obviously, you don't just
- 14:50Speaker 2: have one run in a you know, in a playbook
- 14:52Speaker 2: and in a game plan. But I thought that this
- 14:55Speaker 2: this game struck me as being a little more zone based.
- 14:57Speaker 2: And actually outside zone has been their highest percentage run
- 14:59Speaker 2: with Barkley this season, but over the last three weeks
- 15:02Speaker 2: they featured a lot more inside zone as a higher
- 15:05Speaker 2: percentage foundation, And I think that's because the old line
- 15:08Speaker 2: is starting to block better. Don't forget. You know, you're
- 15:11Speaker 2: dealing with a guy like Dickerson who's probably again I
- 15:14Speaker 2: don't know what his week is like, but I guarantee
- 15:16Speaker 2: it's probably somewhat of a physical struggle for him every
- 15:20Speaker 2: week at this point. And you know, zone requires more athleticism,
- 15:24Speaker 2: you know, outside zone, inside zone not as much obviously,
- 15:27Speaker 2: So you know, it's probably the way their old line
- 15:30Speaker 2: works as well. They're playing to the strengths and limitations
- 15:33Speaker 2: of their old line. But also, you know, I think
- 15:37Speaker 2: that if you're going to start moving people and Barkley,
- 15:39Speaker 2: you know, is going to run as he did a

- 18:36Speaker 2: Good?
- 18:37Speaker 1: Intel's let's take a look at the tay. I want
- 18:39Speaker 1: to start off with having you sort of diagnose some
- 18:41Speaker 1: of the early Obviously, the Eagles only had one touchdown
- 18:44Speaker 1: the fir It's weird. They had this really nice drive
- 18:47Speaker 1: and then it kind of disappeared until until later in
- 18:49Speaker 1: the game. But they start things off I think the
- 18:51Speaker 1: third possession where they hit DeVante Smith for six yards
- 18:55Speaker 1: and then you get another gain, and then you get
- 18:58Speaker 1: a scramble, and then you get another big game and
- 19:00Speaker 1: it all seemingly was out of spread and empty formation.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So so you're talking about the second session.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Second possession. Yes, yes, I believe it starts off with
- 19:08Speaker 1: a six yarder to to DeVante.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Correct the h Let's see if it started. Well, what
- 19:15Speaker 2: started the second possession was a sixteen yard pass to
- 19:17Speaker 2: Devine to Smith. It came out of eleven empty God,
- 19:21Speaker 2: is that the play we're talking about.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I think this is the third and seven play that.
- 19:25Speaker 2: First This was the end of the first possession.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Then, yes, yes, my fault in the first person.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah, so, so it's funny you picked this one because
- 19:32Speaker 2: that's the the second possession started with what was essentially
- 19:35Speaker 2: the same play. It was just deeper.
- 19:37Speaker 1: That's why I picked it. I think we're gonna look
- 19:39Speaker 1: at them both back to bed.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, yeah, so again, but this is an example
- 19:43Speaker 2: where Jalen hits his back foot and delivers the ball.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Now you know, he throws to you know, avoid in
- 19:49Speaker 2: the zone to Smith. You're hoping he can just get
- 19:51Speaker 2: that extra yard and get the first down because he
- 19:53Speaker 2: catches it a little short of the sticks and then
- 19:56Speaker 2: Sainer still makes a good tackle and Smith fights and
- 19:59Speaker 2: just ends up shore and then they go delay of
- 20:01Speaker 2: game and they decide to pun rather than go for
- 20:03Speaker 2: it at this spot on the field on their first possession.
- 20:06Speaker 2: But this is a great example. You know, the guy
- 20:09Speaker 2: you have to be careful with here is really the
- 20:13Speaker 2: corner because if you look at the way this plays out,
- 20:15Speaker 2: there's no one who can play Smith right now. It's
- 20:18Speaker 2: his own concept. It ends up being covered too. So
- 20:20Speaker 2: the guy you actually have to be most concerned about,
- 20:23Speaker 2: but he worked. He's pushing so far outside that he's
- 20:27Speaker 2: not really a factor. But sometimes corners trap like this
- 20:30Speaker 2: and they jump inside and we've seen interceptions and you
- 20:34Speaker 2: know in that situation, but basically, you know, he hits
- 20:37Speaker 2: his back foot and he delivers.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Yep, there you go, nice and the stride. What about
- 20:42Speaker 1: what was Washington doing up front? It looked like at
- 20:44Speaker 1: third and six they were trying to show guys up
- 20:46Speaker 1: front here.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah, they're trying to show up pressure front. They're trying
- 20:49Speaker 2: to dig. They're trying to keep the back in, which
- 20:52Speaker 2: is exactly what they do. You know a lot of
- 20:56Speaker 2: teams do this to make sure that the back and
- 20:59Speaker 2: sometimes it's a tight in depending on the team or
- 21:01Speaker 2: the situation, you know, to keep that person in the
- 21:03Speaker 2: backfield and making it such that there's only four eligibles
- 21:06Speaker 2: that release into routes because now you're playing cover two
- 21:09Speaker 2: with seven and coverage and there's really I mean, because
- 21:13Speaker 2: I think that's kal Katara up top as well. He
- 21:16Speaker 2: ends up he ends up shipping, so you know, he's
- 21:20Speaker 2: not as primary as the three receivers to trips. So
- 21:24Speaker 2: ideally from a defensive perspective, but the problem is is
- 21:28Speaker 2: they show a pressure front and they want to get
- 21:29Speaker 2: to Cover two, so people have to run to spots
- 21:33Speaker 2: and it you know, they don't get there because there's
- 21:35Speaker 2: a hook defender. It's the inside guy. I don't know
- 21:39Speaker 2: if that's Wagner. He's the hook. He's trying to get there.
- 21:42Speaker 2: He can't get there because he was on the line
- 21:44Speaker 2: of scrimmage, right.
- 21:45Speaker 1: That's and I was kind of wondering, Yeah, I was.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I was sort of wondering, well, trying to be too
- 21:51Speaker 1: critical of dan Quinn, but how did you expect to
- 21:53Speaker 1: stop this play because like you had mentioned that this
- 21:57Speaker 1: was easy, this is almost pitching cats for DeVante Smith
- 21:59Speaker 1: asking weller to get there.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I don't know how they teach Sadr's still on the outside.
- 22:05Speaker 2: You know, it's possible Saintry still went too far outside
- 22:08Speaker 2: and he should have stay, you know, a couple of
- 22:10Speaker 2: steps inside and then been in position to play that
- 22:13Speaker 2: because he's he's not going to carry the receiver. He's
- 22:17Speaker 2: he's a flat defender in cover two. But again, this
- 22:20Speaker 2: is what teams do. There's a lot of disguise, a
- 22:23Speaker 2: lot of late rotation. The presnat picture is not the
- 22:26Speaker 2: postnat picture. They're trying to confuse the quarterback. They want
- 22:29Speaker 2: to make it look different, you know, don't forget. Just
- 22:32Speaker 2: a moment's hesitation and the defense can win. Yes, so
- 22:36Speaker 2: then he.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I believe this isn't the same exact Is this the
- 22:39Speaker 1: same exact play where he gets Davante on sixteen yards?
- 22:42Speaker 2: Now? Yeah, So this is the first play of the
- 22:44Speaker 2: second possession. And obviously they're in empty with a spread formation,
- 22:50Speaker 2: and they're they're playing you know, it's it's are they
- 22:54Speaker 2: in base or are they in nickel? I think they
- 22:55Speaker 2: might be in base because I know they played a
- 22:58Speaker 2: lot of bass to the Eagles less in personnel, So
- 23:01Speaker 2: I I forget if they're in bass or in nickel here?
- 23:05Speaker 1: Did that surprise you?
- 23:06Speaker 2: You're in base? You were in basse as the third linebacker?
- 23:12Speaker 2: Uh as opposed to playing the nickel. So so he's up,
- 23:16Speaker 2: he's to the trip side. But they're gonna play cover
- 23:19Speaker 2: two here, and Wagner is going to be the middle
- 23:20Speaker 2: hole defender and lou who is the hook defender here?
- 23:24Speaker 2: And they're playing cover two mm hmm again again, really
- 23:30Speaker 2: has to beat singer still, that's who the throw has
- 23:33Speaker 2: to beat. Uh huh.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But it's the center still is the one on the outside.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a similar concept to you know that play
- 23:43Speaker 2: that we just saw.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Right, I thought there was a different court. No, that
- 23:48Speaker 1: is still center, So you're right. No twenty one, Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 1: who's that twenty one? That's uh who's the guy who
- 23:57Speaker 1: comes in to play the outside for them? Sometimes I
- 23:59Speaker 1: can't remember his name at the moment. But yeah, it
- 24:03Speaker 1: just felt like both times we were fairly easy pitch
- 24:05Speaker 1: and catch for them.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it was. I mean a lot of times. Look,
- 24:10Speaker 2: Jalen hit his back foot, delivered the ball. I mean,
- 24:13Speaker 2: you know, you got to assume he read it the
- 24:15Speaker 2: right way, which he did. And twenty one was not
- 24:17Speaker 2: going to make the play, and no, it worked out perfectly.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Got it? And twenty one is I'm kind of checking there.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna chuck it right now.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Boy, I don't see it on their depth chart. Why
- 24:28Speaker 1: don't I I see that. I know we talked about
- 24:33Speaker 1: him going into the game too, and now I can't
- 24:34Speaker 1: remember he just called up perhaps all right, no big deal,
- 24:39Speaker 1: we'll just call him twenty one. And then we're going
- 24:43Speaker 1: to get one to AJ Brown now I think a
- 24:45Speaker 1: couple of players. So he gets a scramble and then
- 24:48Speaker 1: he believed he hits a J. Brown here for fifteen Yeah.
- 24:51Speaker 2: So this is after the scramble, so they were again
- 24:54Speaker 2: there were no hunnel empty.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Yep, and know they it looks like the commanders are
- 24:59Speaker 1: they again? Or is that Nickel?
- 25:01Speaker 2: Now? So this was the so this was uh sixth
- 25:06Speaker 2: let's see, so they went nod. So this was uh
- 25:11Speaker 2: Brown fifteen yards versus commander's base cover four mm hmm.
- 25:16Speaker 2: This is cover?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Yeah, James, you think they went Why they went based
- 25:19Speaker 1: so much against the Eagles?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Peace? Well they got I mean, I don't know why
- 25:22Speaker 2: they started that way, but they got stuck with it,
- 25:24Speaker 2: you know, because now they're they're you know, facing eleven personnel, right,
- 25:30Speaker 2: and again another another you know zone void throw.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Yep, by the way, that's Jonathan. That's thirty one Jonathan Jones.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yeah, thirty one at Jones Jones. Yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I knew we had talked about him.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I just get jon Yeah. So it's another you know
- 25:44Speaker 2: these are these are basically pitch and catch throws. Yeah,
- 25:48Speaker 2: and you know Jalen was playing with timing, he was
- 25:50Speaker 2: playing with the rhythm these That's the whole point of
- 25:53Speaker 2: all this. You know, you're not necessarily calling these although
- 25:55Speaker 2: they did try the fade to uh to DeVante Smith
- 25:58Speaker 2: and I'm sure he's kicking himself that he didn't catch it,
- 26:01Speaker 2: because he catches those balls ninety nine point nine percent
- 26:04Speaker 2: of the time. But but no, I mean, this is
- 26:08Speaker 2: this is what you want. You're spreading him out. You
- 26:10Speaker 2: know you're gonna get zoned. This is all based on
- 26:12Speaker 2: on your your weak study. I mean, this is not
- 26:16Speaker 2: this None of this is a surprise to the Eagles, right.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I Mean they put a lot of stress on Bobby
- 26:20Speaker 1: Wagner and coverage and he's not that guy. Well he's
- 26:23Speaker 1: not a coverage right now, it's just going That's why
- 26:27Speaker 1: I felt this was intentional, not just cam Lattu, no
- 26:31Speaker 1: centric I think they.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Can do this. It could be a function of Wagner
- 26:35Speaker 2: because he's not a coverage player at this point in
- 26:37Speaker 2: his career. And yeah, so that's this was a really
- 26:42Speaker 2: good second possession and obviously they much right down and scored. Yep,
- 26:46Speaker 2: and then this here you go again, and one is
- 26:47Speaker 2: going to play that far off, Jeff, you could have
- 26:50Speaker 2: completed this ball.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I know that it's crazy. And by the way, you're right,
- 26:53Speaker 1: this is the old Eagles offense. I mean, they won,
- 26:55Speaker 1: somebody's happy, but everybody who complained about too much, too
- 26:58Speaker 1: many hitch routes, too many quick ends. I mean, that's
- 27:02Speaker 1: that's vintage Eagles offense there.
- 27:03Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I was thinking as I was
- 27:07Speaker 2: watching the tape and how they were running really well
- 27:08Speaker 2: and the old line was blocking all the people that
- 27:11Speaker 2: were saying, you know, five six weeks ago, oh, it's predictable,
- 27:14Speaker 2: But I guess so was was this game predictable? They run,
- 27:18Speaker 2: they were in the same stuff they always run, but
- 27:20Speaker 2: you know what they you know, it worked, so I
- 27:22Speaker 2: guess it wasn't predictable this week.
- 27:24Speaker 1: All right, Yeah, I do think there were some advantages also,
- 27:29Speaker 1: Greg of the how they were going spread empty or
- 27:31Speaker 1: just even spread even if it wasn't empty for yards
- 27:34Speaker 1: after catch. We saw a lot more of that in
- 27:36Speaker 1: this game. Yeah, a lot, because you're putting players in space. Sorry,
- 27:39Speaker 1: this was the touchdown to DeVante. What did you what
- 27:42Speaker 1: did you see on this play?
- 27:43Speaker 2: Oh? This time they were in man coverage. This is
- 27:45Speaker 2: just I mean, they didn't. They weren't under center hardly
- 27:48Speaker 2: at all in this game, by the way. You know,
- 27:49Speaker 2: it's funny how that works. I mean last week, you know,
- 27:51Speaker 2: a lot this week, I think just two or three
- 27:54Speaker 2: plays this was just man coverage. DeVante is matched against
- 27:58Speaker 2: say er Still, he just runs a great route and
- 28:01Speaker 2: it's you know, that's exactly what hurts us. Looking. I mean,
- 28:04Speaker 2: this is this is quick timing. He's not reading he
- 28:07Speaker 2: this is where the balls. This is who the play
- 28:09Speaker 2: is designed.
- 28:09Speaker 1: For, right chance, sayra Still did an unbelievable job, or
- 28:15Speaker 1: DeVonta Smith fell down, or but this is this was
- 28:17Speaker 1: the play. Yeah, you know, I like Sandersol, but I
- 28:23Speaker 1: mean this is a little bit of an overmatch, you know, Yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 2: But that was the play.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Hey, Philly, fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 30:41Speaker 1: All right, we're going to go some some running a
- 30:43Speaker 1: little bit, and this is the Tank Bigsby twenty two
- 30:46Speaker 1: yard run. And this is probably one of those other
- 30:49Speaker 1: few snaps that they were under center.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, and yeah, this came out of six zero
- 30:56Speaker 2: line personnel that when they only played two snaps. They
- 30:58Speaker 2: played it on the Barkley forty eight yarder and then
- 31:01Speaker 2: this play came two plays after the Barkley forty eight yarder.
- 31:04Speaker 2: It had six online personnel. It was basically tossed to
- 31:07Speaker 2: the field behind what was essentially a five man surface
- 31:10Speaker 2: because Cooper was basically in a wing alignment attached to
- 31:13Speaker 2: the formation. So I mean, it was just you know,
- 31:17Speaker 2: what we call a five man surface because there's five
- 31:19Speaker 2: guys to one side of the center. So even though
- 31:22Speaker 2: Cooper's not on the ball, as we say, it's still
- 31:25Speaker 2: you can see there's basically five guys tight to the formation,
- 31:29Speaker 2: and it's just it's just tossed strong, you know, I mean,
- 31:33Speaker 2: and it's you know, it's blocked well and it's a
- 31:36Speaker 2: great cutback.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you get, you get. Not nice. This is where
- 31:39Speaker 1: we talked about Goddard seals his guy. Yep, you get
- 31:42Speaker 1: a good block from prior. I thought, you know, it
- 31:46Speaker 1: was nice to see Dickerson kind of get out there, yeah,
- 31:48Speaker 1: and into the second level.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And then Jurgens gets up there as well. He moves.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Now, I'm gonna make one observation. It's not a negative
- 31:56Speaker 1: or criticism, but when we watch it in real time,
- 31:59Speaker 1: and I know that, but that's uh is that Luvu
- 32:01Speaker 1: number three? Who is that number three?
- 32:03Speaker 2: Lulu's number four? Three?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Yeah, who's three? He's a he's a he's got some
- 32:07Speaker 1: athleticism too. I can't remember who it is at the moment.
- 32:10Speaker 1: One of the say Will Harris.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Right, well, yeah number three. Yeah.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I do feel like in the past, Greg Jurgons here
- 32:18Speaker 1: making an angle block gets his body out. I just
- 32:20Speaker 1: feel like his angle blocking, especially at the second level,
- 32:23Speaker 1: hasn't been as accurate, hasn't been as good as fluid.
- 32:27Speaker 2: But the other factor is if you just keep running.
- 32:29Speaker 1: It, h it didn't matter.
- 32:32Speaker 2: No. If he's going to go underneath them, he's you know, he's.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Taking himself away from the play.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Yeah right, that's yeah. Jurgons. Jo Jurgons is not going
- 32:43Speaker 2: to go dance with him. Jurgons is going to go
- 32:45Speaker 2: to create the angle the aiming point that he wants,
- 32:47Speaker 2: and if the guy disappears from the aiming point inside
- 32:50Speaker 2: of him, he's going to say thank you. Yeah, that's
- 32:53Speaker 2: not really a bad job by Jurgons.
- 32:55Speaker 1: No, but I mean I don't have the almost looks
- 32:58Speaker 1: like a little bit of a hole there, But that's
- 32:59Speaker 1: all right. They're not going to call that because he
- 33:01Speaker 1: didn't close enough to the play. That's right. It was
- 33:05Speaker 1: not a hold. But no, my takeaway was nice to
- 33:08Speaker 1: see Landon Dickerson Yea out there and put a good
- 33:11Speaker 1: block on. I mean, I'm sure he's still dealing with
- 33:13Speaker 1: a lot of stuff.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Oh, I mean for sure. But look, I mean, like
- 33:19Speaker 2: I said, the way we started with this is I
- 33:21Speaker 2: thought this was a really good game for them in
- 33:24Speaker 2: the way they want to play now. The thirty seven
- 33:27Speaker 2: dropbacks by Hurtz, is that's something they want to do
- 33:29Speaker 2: every week. Probably not, But it was a very controlled
- 33:33Speaker 2: passing game. He did not throw one ball more than
- 33:36Speaker 2: twenty yards in the air from the line of scrimmage,
- 33:39Speaker 2: so it was a very very controlled passing game.
- 33:43Speaker 1: This is the Barkley twenty two yard touchdown, twelve years touchdown.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I'm sorry, twelve yard touchdown. Yeah, I'm bad at math.
- 33:50Speaker 1: So what do we see on this one?
- 33:53Speaker 2: So I'm trying to remember this one.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Looks like it's simple inside zone, right, let's see. You
- 34:03Speaker 1: gotta love how he twists and turn.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Yeah, go back if you could. Yeah, sure, all right,
- 34:11Speaker 2: here we go. So yeah, now you can start to
- 34:15Speaker 2: run it. Yeah, this is this is a zone run
- 34:17Speaker 2: all the way and again. But you know the thing
- 34:23Speaker 2: that you know what struck me about this the Hurts factor.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Look at the two defenders go with Hurts and look
- 34:29Speaker 2: how that created the cutback. So, I mean, you know,
- 34:33Speaker 2: that's that's a big deal. This this was almost reminiscent
- 34:36Speaker 2: of twenty twenty two, the Super Bowl year when you know,
- 34:39Speaker 2: when they lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl,
- 34:40Speaker 2: where Hurts was such a big factor in the run game,
- 34:43Speaker 2: even when he didn't run himself. I mean, look at
- 34:46Speaker 2: because the d tackle you know.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Ninety ninety three, he's all over Hurts. Yeah, two guys
- 34:52Speaker 1: were all over Hurts, yep, ninety three And really.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Look at that. Look at that, And now you don't
- 34:59Speaker 2: you don't have to because this play is designed to
- 35:01Speaker 2: go to the to the left, and actually who is
- 35:05Speaker 2: at Fred Johnson. He's looking for someone to seal the backside,
- 35:08Speaker 2: to make the backside cut off block. And there's no
- 35:11Speaker 2: one there.
- 35:12Speaker 1: There's no one. Yeah, yeah, And I wonder.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Really struck me about this play was the Hurts factor
- 35:18Speaker 2: in the run game and Barkley was Barkley.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and Herts ran for forty yards this game. He
- 35:24Speaker 1: ran for I forty three forty eight. Last game, he
- 35:27Speaker 1: hadn't been running, and so there was no reason to
- 35:29Speaker 1: sort of respect the fact that they would run. But
- 35:32Speaker 1: they were on him. God, what was the last time
- 35:34Speaker 1: we saw si Qua Barkle I have a hole this
- 35:36Speaker 1: big to run through?
- 35:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this was you know when people might say, oh,
- 35:40Speaker 2: it's the Commanders, but you know what, the Eagles. We
- 35:43Speaker 2: talked about this last Friday in the pre game or
- 35:45Speaker 2: last Thursday. I guess that the Eagles are sort of
- 35:48Speaker 2: playing against themselves to get back to who they have
- 35:51Speaker 2: to be in order to, you know, to get back
- 35:53Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl and say what you want. And
- 35:55Speaker 2: I don't make predictions, you know that, but we all
- 35:57Speaker 2: know it's tough to play at the Lincoln January. It is.
- 36:01Speaker 1: And then, by the way, that was great contact balance
- 36:04Speaker 1: by Sega. He should have been down. I mean two
- 36:07Speaker 1: guys trying to tackle him at the five spins out
- 36:09Speaker 1: takes another hit at the one and barrels in. Great
- 36:12Speaker 1: job by him there felt like the most even the
- 36:17Speaker 1: Giants game where he had went crazy. It felt like, yeah,
- 36:19Speaker 1: it's just the Giants. They stink, and I know that
- 36:22Speaker 1: the Commanders aren't great, but Segon had to work for
- 36:24Speaker 1: these yards though, I mean were they were not just
- 36:27Speaker 1: given to him.
- 36:28Speaker 2: This felt to me more stabilizing and more sustainability to
- 36:31Speaker 2: the run game. It wasn't just like, oh, here's a
- 36:33Speaker 2: great run. I mean, obviously the forty eight yard was
- 36:35Speaker 2: a great run, but I just felt watching the tape
- 36:39Speaker 2: like they're blocking people, they're getting hard yards, they're moving
- 36:43Speaker 2: the chains. I mean, they had an inordinate number of
- 36:46Speaker 2: first downs in this game. I think they had twenty
- 36:48Speaker 2: six first downs, which is, like, I know, was the
- 36:52Speaker 2: highest total for the week in the league, but it's
- 36:55Speaker 2: also a ridiculously high number. I mean, yes, twenty six
- 37:00Speaker 2: downs any game is crazy.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Yep, Yep, it's a weird. I always say that the
- 37:06Speaker 1: Commander's Eagles game, especially the first one, it doesn't follow
- 37:09Speaker 1: a normal script, yea, and the fact that the Eagles
- 37:11Speaker 1: were losing at halftime almost made no sense for how
- 37:14Speaker 1: they get the way the game was going. But obviously
- 37:17Speaker 1: they've got to work it out with Jake Elliott and
- 37:19Speaker 1: figure out what's going on there because that that can
- 37:22Speaker 1: be a detriment going into the playoffs.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you assume you're gonna play close games
- 37:25Speaker 2: and you're gonna you know, you're gonna have to kick
- 37:29Speaker 2: some field go somewhere along the line. Yes, you know,
- 37:32Speaker 2: absolutely so.
- 37:34Speaker 1: All right, Well that is it. That's the Eagles offense,
- 37:36Speaker 1: and Part two will go through the Eagles defense again
- 37:39Speaker 1: in their twenty nine to eighteen win over the Commanders.
- 37:41Speaker 1: For Greg Cosell, I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching Inside
- 37:44Speaker 1: the Tape with Greg Cosell on Inside the Birds
