- 0:06Speaker 1: In the Weeds.
- 0:07Speaker 2: We played this game recently, we're going to play it again.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Biggest concern facing a contender. There's another article out in
- 0:15Speaker 2: The Athletic and it brings up different questions. This time
- 0:20Speaker 2: it's more specific. Last time we went over this was
- 0:23Speaker 2: more of a theme with a team. This time it's like,
- 0:26Speaker 2: for example, Phillies, who's starting Game two of the playoffs
- 0:30Speaker 2: for you.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Detroit?
- 0:33Speaker 2: What's you're pitching after Trek Skoogle, which we've gone over
- 0:37Speaker 2: on this show actually earlier this week. There's some questions
- 0:41Speaker 2: about offenses.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I think there's questions about every single team. So which
- 0:45Speaker 1: one do you like? Though? Which one do you want.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Us to do? This is Friday where you get to
- 0:51Speaker 2: just look at the board and you get the sound
- 0:54Speaker 2: off pop off. If you're an OGFT fan and you
- 0:57Speaker 2: remember that segment from twenty twenty three, cook.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Candy pop.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Anyway, no free and I'm I'm with I'm with you,
- 1:10Speaker 3: what I I like it?
- 1:12Speaker 4: Todd answer the question.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Throw.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Candy popcorn into your mouth?
- 1:20Speaker 4: No free advertising, No free advertising. I mean, what's the
- 1:25Speaker 4: biggest concern of any team because everybody.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Has concerned, Well, it's pitching, but.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Any individual team one well.
- 1:32Speaker 3: I I I wanted to say the Mariners, but I
- 1:38Speaker 3: feel like they're still set. Their pitching is is really good.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I mean, I go with Boston Crochet has been really good,
- 1:46Speaker 3: but you know, these other guys just haven't been a
- 1:49Speaker 3: part of it.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I mean, you're saying lately they're great, but you don't
- 1:54Speaker 2: know if you trust it in the playoffs.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I don't know if I trusted in the playoffs.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Outside of or you're saying Crochet has recently done you
- 2:02Speaker 4: feel like he's.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Well, No, I feel like he'll be fine. Okay, Okay,
- 2:06Speaker 3: don't do that. The guard he's really good.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, he's probably number two hit or miss God.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Are there some pictures where you watch them and you're like,
- 2:20Speaker 2: that's more of a regular season play, Like, not that
- 2:24Speaker 2: they can't perform in the playoffs, but are there some
- 2:26Speaker 2: guys that you'd face and you're like, man, when this
- 2:28Speaker 2: guy faces the top competition on the planet, the top
- 2:32Speaker 2: team this year or whatever, he's gonna get roasted.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I think there's guys that, Yeah, I don't think his
- 2:38Speaker 4: stuff plays in the pressure pressure of the postseason. Not
- 2:43Speaker 4: that he, like a certain picture will fold, but just
- 2:46Speaker 4: more like, sorry, his stuff's not elite. Everybody's everybody's amped up,
- 2:51Speaker 4: everybody's juice. The bats are a little bit quicker. I
- 2:55Speaker 4: think whatever your whatever your strength is, it's it's magnified
- 3:01Speaker 4: in the playoffs. If you can hit a fastball, you
- 3:03Speaker 4: could hit a bullet in the playoffs. And I think
- 3:07Speaker 4: some pitchers you look at and you're like, he just
- 3:09Speaker 4: empties the tank, empties the tank, every single pitch. I
- 3:13Speaker 4: was talking about it last night on Pinch Striped Terriforatory.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I think that's what Carlos Rodin used to be. He
- 3:18Speaker 4: was just first pitch out, empty the tank, best slider,
- 3:22Speaker 4: best slider. Last night, what I saw from him was
- 3:27Speaker 4: he was able to locate some pitches that then later
- 3:29Speaker 4: on if he needed a strikeout, if he got in
- 3:32Speaker 4: a jam, bang he went to it and he never
- 3:35Speaker 4: needed it. So it's like there's two levels to pitchers,
- 3:38Speaker 4: and if a pitcher doesn't have that second level, those
- 3:40Speaker 4: are the dudes in the playoffs I don't think are
- 3:44Speaker 4: going to give you what you what you're looking for.
- 3:46Speaker 4: It might go three innings, they might go four innings,
- 3:48Speaker 4: but their managers just waiting to hit the bullpen button.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Just go to the bullpen and they know it. You know,
- 3:55Speaker 4: the team will let you know. No, you're good.
- 3:57Speaker 3: The team that I know we have up here that
- 3:58Speaker 3: I'm not worried about is it is the Tigers. Really
- 4:02Speaker 3: Aj Hinch, Wow, it was one of the most Yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 3: this guy is playing chess.
- 4:07Speaker 1: When everybody's playing checkers. Dude.
- 4:08Speaker 3: He will start the guy for one inning, next guy
- 4:10Speaker 3: comes in for two. Like he has boom, he has
- 4:13Speaker 3: his sheets. Oh oh, day two, Day three, He's got
- 4:16Speaker 3: eight hundred different things about exactly what he wants to do.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I want to see if they can move up a
- 4:21Speaker 3: little bit more after what they did last year.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It would be fun to see the Tigers make a
- 4:25Speaker 1: big push.
- 4:26Speaker 4: But you don't have you don't have as many question
- 4:29Speaker 4: marks with him.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean there is, but I just in AJ, we trust,
- 4:33Speaker 3: That's all. I was so blown away when I did
- 4:36Speaker 3: those games last year. This guy was unbelievable.
- 4:40Speaker 2: In fairness, I see what you're saying, because last year
- 4:43Speaker 2: they truly had school ball and then chaos. This year
- 4:50Speaker 2: there's concern after schoolbl But can Jack Flaherty give you
- 4:53Speaker 2: some good innings in the playoffs or absolutely can Casey
- 4:56Speaker 2: Mice get through in order once or twice and make
- 4:58Speaker 2: you feel good. Absolutely. I actually agree with you that
- 5:02Speaker 2: from a depth perspective, there is more to it. I
- 5:06Speaker 2: think they'll have an easier time getting through the beginning
- 5:08Speaker 2: of a game and be a little bit less Schoogle reliant.
- 5:12Speaker 2: We talked about this the other day, Kratz. They were
- 5:14Speaker 2: completely Scoogle reliant. They're like, if Schoogle wins every game
- 5:17Speaker 2: for us, we can go the distance. If he has
- 5:19Speaker 2: one blip, we're done this year. If he has one
- 5:22Speaker 2: blip or one okay, not bang or start, I think
- 5:27Speaker 2: they can still win a series. Because Jack Flaherty last
- 5:30Speaker 2: year was like, oh, he's amazing in the playoffs and
- 5:32Speaker 2: he gets rocked. So if you get that version of Flaherty, great,
- 5:35Speaker 2: you know, and he gets swing and miss. Jack Flaherty's
- 5:37Speaker 2: stuff can play in the playoffs if he's feeling it.
- 5:40Speaker 2: So I agree with him on that front. Did I
- 5:42Speaker 2: want the Tigers to do more at the deadline, Sure,
- 5:44Speaker 2: But I mean they've transformed Kyle Finigan as long as
- 5:48Speaker 2: he's okay from the other day.
- 5:50Speaker 5: He's a strikeout machine.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Now Kyle Finigan just got paid like triple what he
- 5:55Speaker 2: was going to get in the offseason, right, he made
- 5:57Speaker 2: like six mil last offseason. He's probably gonna sign a
- 6:00Speaker 2: two or three year deal for like six to eight
- 6:03Speaker 2: mil a year, Like he might sign three years twenty
- 6:07Speaker 2: one because they said, hey, you use your splitter thirty
- 6:10Speaker 2: percent of the time, let's go fifty boom strikeouts. I
- 6:13Speaker 2: mean it was I don't want to be I don't
- 6:16Speaker 2: want to sound dumb because it's I'm not inside there,
- 6:18Speaker 2: but like it did look that simple on paper, like
- 6:21Speaker 2: strikeouts are up a ton. What's he doing pitch mix?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, he's using his slider twenty percent more.
- 6:26Speaker 4: It's so it's so crazy splitter, Yes, I know what
- 6:29Speaker 4: you meant. It's so cringey. That the that the Nats
- 6:32Speaker 4: just have never seen this, and they they had him.
- 6:36Speaker 4: He was successful, He works hard, he was in big
- 6:39Speaker 4: spots and they just never unlock that. That's tough to see.
- 6:43Speaker 4: But for me, the one that facing the contending teams,
- 6:48Speaker 4: because we're talking contending teams, that's the only reason they're
- 6:51Speaker 4: on this list is the Cubs. Are the Cubs gonna be? Okay?
- 6:57Speaker 4: How is how is Kyle Tucker gonna come back from
- 7:01Speaker 4: this injury? Is he been playing with it for a while.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Is this time off that he's gonna have going to
- 7:07Speaker 4: get him completely healthy? Because if he's not completely healthy,
- 7:12Speaker 4: see you, it's gonna be it's gonna be quick. And
- 7:14Speaker 4: that's why I hesitated even talking about the Cubs because
- 7:18Speaker 4: I think they're They're two and Q I mean a
- 7:21Speaker 4: three game series. I just don't see how unless this
- 7:24Speaker 4: offense changes what they're doing. PCA gets back on a heater,
- 7:29Speaker 4: stops swinging at so many pitches.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Sa Zuki too, Zuki.
- 7:35Speaker 4: He was so pissed that he didn't make the All
- 7:36Speaker 4: Star Game, which he should have, and then he forgot
- 7:40Speaker 4: to come back for the second half. And now he's
- 7:42Speaker 4: got to play right field. And I'm afraid that if
- 7:45Speaker 4: he's in right field, is that gonna wear him down?
- 7:48Speaker 4: Is he already worn down? Is he dealing with something?
- 7:51Speaker 4: It's a big month. You can change things in September.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You can make those adjustments. Fortunately, they have a big
- 7:56Speaker 4: enough lead that they're gonna be in the playoffs. They
- 7:59Speaker 4: need to figure it out.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Thank good questions, good talk Diamondbacks Rookie Taylor Rashie joining
- 8:06Speaker 2: us right now on FT Taylor, great to have you on.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Thank you for the time and since it's only been
- 8:11Speaker 2: what a couple of weeks. Congratulations on making the show man.
- 8:14Speaker 2: How's life in the show?
- 8:16Speaker 5: Thank you, thank you, Thanks for having me. It's a
- 8:19Speaker 5: pleasure to be here. It's great. It's it's a world
- 8:23Speaker 5: win of emotions right now.
- 8:24Speaker 6: It feels like this last week and a half has
- 8:27Speaker 6: been a month long, but it's been like a week
- 8:30Speaker 6: and it's it's a lot, but it's a good time.
- 8:34Speaker 1: You're a big leaguer now, bro, Nobody can take that
- 8:36Speaker 1: away from you.
- 8:37Speaker 3: My question to you, is there anything in these couple
- 8:41Speaker 3: of weeks that you've been a part of that you've
- 8:43Speaker 3: done something wrong that you didn't know about? Like when
- 8:46Speaker 3: you come to the big leagues. I remember my first time.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I walked out with shorts and a T shirt on,
- 8:51Speaker 3: and Arthur Road.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Said, Yo, what you doing, man? Get your you know what?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Back up to and get changed.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my god, I had no clue, Like,
- 8:59Speaker 3: did you do anything wrong that you got called out for?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yet? Not yet.
- 9:05Speaker 6: I think I've had some guys on the team. One
- 9:08Speaker 6: of my teammates, Kyle Backus, he got called up earlier
- 9:11Speaker 6: this year and he did some of those things. So
- 9:14Speaker 6: like the first when he first heard about it, he
- 9:16Speaker 6: sent me like a couple of paragraph long text message saying, hey,
- 9:20Speaker 6: do this, don't do that, make sure you do this,
- 9:23Speaker 6: show up early, like just the rookie things. But yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 6: he he gave me a good briefing on what not
- 9:29Speaker 6: to do because I know that he went through some
- 9:31Speaker 6: of those things.
- 9:32Speaker 1: What a great rookie. That's a good friend.
- 9:34Speaker 4: That's a great friend, that's that's big by him, that
- 9:36Speaker 4: you don't have to make his mistakes.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:39Speaker 6: I had a couple of guys in Triple A, guys
- 9:42Speaker 6: like Casey Kelly and other guys that have you know,
- 9:45Speaker 6: they've been big leaders a long time. They would have,
- 9:48Speaker 6: Like Casey went over to Korea, so he was able.
- 9:50Speaker 6: Like before I went up, he's like, hey, like here's
- 9:52Speaker 6: the kind of the ground rules. Make sure you're in early,
- 9:55Speaker 6: out late, don't wear this, make sure you you know,
- 9:58Speaker 6: stay out away in the training.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Room like things like that.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Yeah, but you're older than most of these dudes, so
- 10:03Speaker 4: it's got to be it's gotta be different. I broke
- 10:06Speaker 4: into the big leagues I was I was thirty years
- 10:08Speaker 4: already my first time, so I was a rookie for
- 10:10Speaker 4: the Pirates, and man, I think like ten or twelve
- 10:15Speaker 4: days into it was the trade deadline, they got rid
- 10:18Speaker 4: of everybody. I went from one of the like middle
- 10:22Speaker 4: tier older guys to the oldest guy on the team
- 10:25Speaker 4: with the least amount of service time. So when some
- 10:28Speaker 4: of these dudes start giving you a hard time, you
- 10:30Speaker 4: still have to sing on the bus. So I bet
- 10:32Speaker 4: I hope you have a song that you're ready to
- 10:33Speaker 4: sing or play or dance one of the two or
- 10:37Speaker 4: one of the three. But I do you gotta make
- 10:39Speaker 4: you do? Can you give us like a preview of
- 10:42Speaker 4: what that song is gonna be?
- 10:44Speaker 6: The song I had to do this in college, so
- 10:47Speaker 6: I have I have like a little preparation. It's Party
- 10:50Speaker 6: in the USA by Miley Cyrus. It's a pretty easy song.
- 10:55Speaker 6: So that's what I kind of stick with.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Okay, So what's your big what's your first big league moment?
- 11:01Speaker 4: You haven't been up there very long. What's your first
- 11:03Speaker 4: big league moment that's something big league that you're like, dang,
- 11:07Speaker 4: this is the show, not not. I'm not talking about
- 11:09Speaker 4: like you're you know, you're out it, where you got
- 11:11Speaker 4: your you got your first save, or like you're in
- 11:15Speaker 4: like you're sitting in a bullpen and like, wow, the
- 11:17Speaker 4: stadium is big. But like something that's like like ca
- 11:20Speaker 4: tell Marte's jewelry or something like something big league.
- 11:24Speaker 6: There's there's a lot of that. I think my first
- 11:26Speaker 6: big league moment was probably my first night. Even though
- 11:29Speaker 6: I got option after my game in the walkdown, I
- 11:31Speaker 6: flew back with the team to LA and so one
- 11:35Speaker 6: of one of my relievers, Bryce Jarvis, took me out
- 11:39Speaker 6: to a nice like rooftop sushi dinner in l A.
- 11:43Speaker 6: And I was like, okay, like this is this is
- 11:45Speaker 6: pretty show.
- 11:46Speaker 5: This is cool.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I love that. Okay.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So then for on the field moment, Taylor, you've made
- 11:53Speaker 2: two appearances and you've been great. You've wracked up two
- 11:57Speaker 2: saves already your first two appearances. That alone is pretty rare.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Your story is rare and cool, and obviously Kratz has
- 12:04Speaker 2: gone through something somewhat similar. Right where you wait you
- 12:08Speaker 2: get your time now to strike? But did you expect
- 12:11Speaker 2: that in your first two appearances you would be thrust
- 12:13Speaker 2: into this kind of spot. I have to admit I
- 12:16Speaker 2: didn't catch the first one live. I caught the second
- 12:18Speaker 2: one live. I watched and I'm like, damn, this is
- 12:21Speaker 2: a moment. I mean, it was the Brewers the first
- 12:23Speaker 2: time around, that's best record in baseball. Second time around,
- 12:26Speaker 2: it's Texas. They're fighting for their playoff lives, and I'm like,
- 12:29Speaker 2: here's Taylor playing spoilers.
- 12:31Speaker 1: So how cool was that?
- 12:32Speaker 2: Because there's many relievers that go their whole career and
- 12:35Speaker 2: they don't get to touch a save up.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Yeah, it's cool.
- 12:38Speaker 6: I think the first time in Milwaukee, I was kind
- 12:42Speaker 6: of just thrown into it, kind of by luck.
- 12:43Speaker 5: We didn't have we didn't have a lot of available
- 12:46Speaker 5: arms with a bullpen.
- 12:46Speaker 6: You know, our guys have been grinding down in the bullpen,
- 12:49Speaker 6: and I knew that I was kind of called up
- 12:51Speaker 6: to Phils innings, and those innings just happened to be seven,
- 12:54Speaker 6: eight nine.
- 12:55Speaker 5: I wasn't really expecting that by any means. It was.
- 13:00Speaker 5: It was crazy.
- 13:01Speaker 6: I thought maybe I was gonna go out for the
- 13:02Speaker 6: seventh and the eighth and then somebody had come in
- 13:04Speaker 6: for the ninth. But you know, after I walked in
- 13:06Speaker 6: and the after the eighth inning was over and thenn't
- 13:09Speaker 6: shake my hand, I was like, well, here we go.
- 13:13Speaker 4: What is what is that? What is that like? For
- 13:16Speaker 4: you in your situation. You've been in the minor leagues.
- 13:18Speaker 4: You've seen guys get optioned down, You've seen guys get dfayed.
- 13:23Speaker 4: When you're out there that long. Do you ever think, oh, man,
- 13:28Speaker 4: this is so many innings, I'm gonna be down tomorrow.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I guess. I guess I'm don't cancer your tickets, mom, dad, uncle, cousin,
- 13:37Speaker 4: cancer your tickets. I won't be in I won't be
- 13:40Speaker 4: in LA because they're gonna definitely option me. I just
- 13:43Speaker 4: threw three innings. Do you think about that? Do guys
- 13:46Speaker 4: say anything to you.
- 13:49Speaker 5: I knew it was coming. I knew just the position
- 13:52Speaker 5: I was in.
- 13:53Speaker 6: I knew once I went out there for that third inning,
- 13:55Speaker 6: I kind of sat in the dug out and I
- 13:56Speaker 6: was like, well, I need to make the best of
- 13:58Speaker 6: my opportunity right now, because I know I'm gonna be
- 14:00Speaker 6: for two days at least, and they're gonna need guys
- 14:04Speaker 6: to fill in. So I was like, you know, like,
- 14:06Speaker 6: this is my opportunity. I gotta go make the most
- 14:08Speaker 6: of it. And yeah, I did have to send out
- 14:11Speaker 6: those text messages after the game, like hey, like, I'm
- 14:14Speaker 6: not gonna be on the team in LA. So don't
- 14:16Speaker 6: bother coming.
- 14:18Speaker 1: That's good.
- 14:18Speaker 4: You saved some money. You didn't have to get a
- 14:20Speaker 4: bunch of people tickets because you would have played for
- 14:21Speaker 4: free if you went out to LA and you had
- 14:23Speaker 4: to get everybody tickets. But my yeah, my question is
- 14:28Speaker 4: probably one that's been asked a million times, but I'm
- 14:30Speaker 4: asking it because it got asked of me a million
- 14:33Speaker 4: times as a thirty year old for myself going up
- 14:37Speaker 4: to the big leagues? How many times did you think
- 14:39Speaker 4: about quitting? And my answer was always a freaking ton
- 14:44Speaker 4: But I was fortunate I never had any injuries. What
- 14:47Speaker 4: is that for you? What is that? What is that is?
- 14:49Speaker 4: What is the main time that you were like, yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 4: this is probably when I should quit.
- 14:57Speaker 6: It was probably when I tore my lat. At the
- 14:59Speaker 6: end of the twenty two two seasons, I was in
- 15:01Speaker 6: Double A. I was having the season of my life.
- 15:04Speaker 6: I think I had like a sub two five era.
- 15:08Speaker 6: I was, you know, I was cruising. I was having
- 15:09Speaker 6: a great time. And then you know, we went up
- 15:12Speaker 6: to Portland Main and I tore my.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Lat and.
- 15:15Speaker 6: I was just sitting there in the hotel after the game,
- 15:19Speaker 6: and I was just like, man, like this, there's a
- 15:21Speaker 6: very good possibility and this is it. Like I'm getting
- 15:23Speaker 6: up there in age, I don't throw very hard, like
- 15:27Speaker 6: this could be it. And and all throughout rehab, you know,
- 15:30Speaker 6: your rehab for a year, and I spent the entire
- 15:33Speaker 6: year living in hotels. And there's days where I would
- 15:35Speaker 6: just wake up and I'm like, man, what if I
- 15:37Speaker 6: just don't go to the field today, Like I there's
- 15:40Speaker 6: nothing like I don't know if there's an end of
- 15:43Speaker 6: the tunnel.
- 15:44Speaker 5: With the light in it.
- 15:45Speaker 6: I I just I was there was times where I
- 15:47Speaker 6: was like struggling to just motivate myself to get to
- 15:49Speaker 6: the field to do my lat rehab, and you know,
- 15:53Speaker 6: I just kind of felt like sometimes I was like,
- 15:54Speaker 6: you know, I don't know if this is all worth it.
- 15:57Speaker 4: So there's countless times that you thought about quit, and
- 15:59Speaker 4: it's all it's hard. It's hard to even like conceptualize
- 16:04Speaker 4: or like put it on paper. Was there somebody? Was
- 16:07Speaker 4: there somebody that kept you going? Was there somebody that's
- 16:12Speaker 4: like pissed you off that you're like, oh screw that,
- 16:14Speaker 4: I'm gonna show that person. You know what motivates you
- 16:18Speaker 4: to keep going?
- 16:20Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a kind of a decent amount of people
- 16:24Speaker 6: I have a little list of my phone of people
- 16:27Speaker 6: like throughout my career, starting in like high school, that
- 16:31Speaker 6: have like told me like, hey, like you're too slow,
- 16:34Speaker 6: you don't throw hard enough, you're not good enough. You know,
- 16:37Speaker 6: you're out of shape. Like just people throughout my entire
- 16:40Speaker 6: career that have told me like, hey, you're not like
- 16:42Speaker 6: you don't have a chance. Like there's less than one
- 16:45Speaker 6: percent of you know, people that play baseball that make
- 16:47Speaker 6: it like why are you that person?
- 16:50Speaker 5: So like, yeah, there's.
- 16:51Speaker 6: A pretty solid list of people where I'm just like,
- 16:53Speaker 6: you know, like I have to prove these people wrong.
- 16:57Speaker 5: I like proving people wrong. It kind of is my motive.
- 17:02Speaker 6: And so yeah, there's a list of people and a
- 17:05Speaker 6: couple of them got text messages.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, hey receipts.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Maybe I love every sec receipts.
- 17:13Speaker 4: He's catching them receipts in.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Chang here's one. Ching love every second of that. That
- 17:19Speaker 3: he might be have a little jersey in him.
- 17:20Speaker 1: No, I like that.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yeah, he definitely does a little swag piece. My question
- 17:25Speaker 3: here is I want to talk about minor leagues a
- 17:27Speaker 3: little bit about the pitchers. I know you guys understand,
- 17:30Speaker 3: but you talk a lot is there a main focus
- 17:32Speaker 3: on velocity, Like do you guys always talk about velocity
- 17:35Speaker 3: and how much you know in the big leagues and
- 17:37Speaker 3: where you're at now, it's about speed and movement on
- 17:40Speaker 3: the baseball.
- 17:42Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, there's always less from the staff, less
- 17:46Speaker 6: from like pitching coaches and all that stuff, because like,
- 17:48Speaker 6: you have what you have, and like, gaining velocity in
- 17:51Speaker 6: the season is it's hard. It's almost impossible, especially after
- 17:53Speaker 6: a long season. But like throughout the pitching staff the bullpen,
- 17:57Speaker 6: like everyone's trying to find something that you know it's
- 18:00Speaker 6: going to give them an extra mile or two an hour.
- 18:03Speaker 6: And that's something I struggled with a lot last year.
- 18:05Speaker 6: You know, I got suck into those conversations and I
- 18:08Speaker 6: tried all year. I was throwing away the balls, I
- 18:10Speaker 6: was doing everything, doing the extra stuff in the gym,
- 18:13Speaker 6: going out on the mound and like trying to throw harder.
- 18:16Speaker 6: I was really focusing on, like, hey, how can I,
- 18:18Speaker 6: you know, get my average fastball velo up a mile
- 18:20Speaker 6: an hour or two? And that really led to me
- 18:23Speaker 6: being less efficient, throwing less strikes, not hitting my spots.
- 18:26Speaker 6: And you know, this year I kind of just accepted.
- 18:28Speaker 6: I was like you know what, I'm going to be
- 18:30Speaker 6: that guy that throws eighty eight to ninety one, and
- 18:34Speaker 6: I just have to accept that. And I know it
- 18:36Speaker 6: will probably take longer to get some recognition just because
- 18:38Speaker 6: I don't throw very hard. But eventually my thought was,
- 18:42Speaker 6: you know, results are going to end up outweighing the
- 18:46Speaker 6: what if he threw ninety three? What if he threw
- 18:48Speaker 6: ninety four type talk that I know people have.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Yeah, they're always going to talk about that, But you
- 18:53Speaker 4: got two saves in the show, So piss on that
- 18:56Speaker 4: heavy ball and running and gunning and throwing it as
- 18:59Speaker 4: hard as you can, and you know ball four never
- 19:02Speaker 4: gets an out. But my question to you is you're
- 19:05Speaker 4: with the Diamondbacks. When I watched your video when I
- 19:08Speaker 4: watched the game the other day, we brought it up
- 19:10Speaker 4: here and I said to Scott, I said, who do
- 19:13Speaker 4: you think that guy looks like? Who does he pitch like?
- 19:16Speaker 4: Is there a direct comparison of a probably twenty twelve
- 19:21Speaker 4: Diamondback pitcher. You probably don't even know him, but his
- 19:23Speaker 4: name probably has come up because he came up through
- 19:25Speaker 4: the Diamondbacks system. Is there ye are you compared? Are
- 19:29Speaker 4: you comparing to that person?
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yeah, we talked about cale mentor.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Yes, and is that is that unfair? Because he was
- 19:36Speaker 4: shorter than you were, so that's not cool. But the
- 19:38Speaker 4: pitching do they do they mention that as Diamondbacks, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 4: staff and stuff.
- 19:43Speaker 6: I mean, I've heard that for the last like three
- 19:46Speaker 6: or four years. I remember, you know, briefly watching him
- 19:50Speaker 6: when I was younger, and I never really put it together.
- 19:53Speaker 6: And then my my coach at Ucar Van ben Orloff
- 19:56Speaker 6: called me in the office one day in the offseason.
- 19:58Speaker 6: He goes, hey, like, you know, you don't throw very hard,
- 20:02Speaker 6: but you throw exactly like this guy. And I was like, who, Like,
- 20:05Speaker 6: who throws like me? Like, I know, I'm unique, I know,
- 20:07Speaker 6: I'm weird, like and He's pulled up a video and
- 20:10Speaker 6: I was like, yeah, that's yeah, I throw exactly like him.
- 20:13Speaker 5: So and he's like, just keep doing that.
- 20:15Speaker 6: One day, it'll work out, and thankfully it did.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Definitely did that measureable we got measure I Yeah, I'm wrong.
- 20:24Speaker 4: I thought Cole Mener was more like a six foot guy,
- 20:28Speaker 4: six foot like two ten to twenty. He's six three
- 20:31Speaker 4: two forty. You're six four two twenty. I thought you
- 20:36Speaker 4: were much taller.
- 20:36Speaker 2: But and then you use the extension too, right.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Yeah, can you can you dive in can you dive
- 20:41Speaker 4: into that at all in a sense of like the
- 20:44Speaker 4: extension that you get and what that I'm not going
- 20:47Speaker 4: into the numbers of analytics because I think will bore
- 20:49Speaker 4: some people, But there's no way you haven't been able
- 20:53Speaker 4: to successfully increase your velocity from what you said, have
- 20:57Speaker 4: you been able to successfully increase your extension, your angle
- 21:03Speaker 4: of attack, your spin rate in ways that has helped
- 21:06Speaker 4: you way more than two or three miles an hour
- 21:09Speaker 4: when your velocity would.
- 21:11Speaker 6: Yeah, I've always been a guy that's had pretty good extension.
- 21:15Speaker 6: I get around seven feet of extension on any given fastball,
- 21:21Speaker 6: and so I kind of was just lucky that I've
- 21:24Speaker 6: always had that and I didn't really know I had
- 21:26Speaker 6: it until I got into professional baseball because that's when
- 21:28Speaker 6: I all like the analytics and they start telling me
- 21:30Speaker 6: all this stuff. But yeah, that kind of stuff has
- 21:34Speaker 6: really helped me because I know it makes my eighty
- 21:37Speaker 6: eight look a little bit faster. And just I've heard
- 21:40Speaker 6: from like our first baseman's, our shortstops or second basement,
- 21:43Speaker 6: like when they talk to hitters that are hitting off me,
- 21:45Speaker 6: they're like it says eighty eight on the board, but
- 21:48Speaker 6: it gets on you a lot faster than any other
- 21:50Speaker 6: eighty eight like that they seen. So I know that
- 21:54Speaker 6: the the extension helps me a lot.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Do you know how?
- 22:00Speaker 4: First of all, do you remember who?
- 22:02Speaker 1: Do you remember who.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Told you that? Was it just some like dude who
- 22:06Speaker 4: was like, excuse me, Taylor, you have incredible extension or
- 22:12Speaker 4: was it like do you remember the coach?
- 22:16Speaker 5: No, I don't remember the coach per se. I just
- 22:19Speaker 5: know that.
- 22:21Speaker 6: It would come up in meetings, just like with you know, pitching,
- 22:26Speaker 6: development staff and stuff like that, that it's like I
- 22:29Speaker 6: have good extension. And to be honest, I never really
- 22:31Speaker 6: was one since I'm a little bit older that was
- 22:35Speaker 6: heavy into analytics or even like trying to understand them
- 22:38Speaker 6: because they're all just so arbitrary to me, Like I
- 22:41Speaker 6: don't still to this day, I don't get a lot
- 22:43Speaker 6: of understand a lot of the numbers. But they're just like, hey,
- 22:48Speaker 6: don't change that, And I was like, well, I don't
- 22:50Speaker 6: plan on changing how I pitched. I don't think that's
- 22:52Speaker 6: going to change.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I don't don't.
- 22:54Speaker 4: I wouldn't know how to change it if I could,
- 22:56Speaker 4: so there's do you know, because everybody compares veloci, everybody's
- 23:00Speaker 4: gonna say Ben Joyce throws this. When you're a team,
- 23:04Speaker 4: Justin Martinez throws triple digits. Extension is a real thing.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Do you know how you compare your extension compared to
- 23:14Speaker 4: other guys that have elite extension? I know, or might
- 23:17Speaker 4: be nerding out, but like guys need to know where
- 23:21Speaker 4: you compare and why you, in my opinion, could have
- 23:25Speaker 4: a really good career.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Yeah, I kind of know where I stand as far extension.
- 23:31Speaker 6: I know there's there's a lot of guys with more
- 23:34Speaker 6: extension than me. I mean, you got Miserwski nowadays is
- 23:37Speaker 6: I think he's like seven to five seven six extension
- 23:40Speaker 6: or something like that, still throwing a hundred.
- 23:41Speaker 5: So I can't imagine what that looks like.
- 23:45Speaker 6: But I know just from what I've been told and
- 23:47Speaker 6: like numbers I've seen that, you know, I'm pretty high
- 23:50Speaker 6: up there on the extension list, or at least above average,
- 23:54Speaker 6: And so I think I think that helps me a lot,
- 23:57Speaker 6: and it helps me have confidence the fact that okay,
- 24:01Speaker 6: yeah I throw eighty eight, but it moves a little
- 24:04Speaker 6: bit and it gets on you a little bit. Faster
- 24:05Speaker 6: than what the board says.
- 24:07Speaker 4: It should it should. I'm only saying this because I
- 24:09Speaker 4: want to encourage kids who are pitching that don't have
- 24:13Speaker 4: ninety five at sixteen years old, that this is the
- 24:17Speaker 4: beauty of baseball. You have a superpower. Go out there
- 24:21Speaker 4: and know that you've got a freaking superpower, and you
- 24:23Speaker 4: can get everybody out because when they get out, they're
- 24:26Speaker 4: gonna look at the board and go, how did this
- 24:29Speaker 4: guy get me out? And then every two weeks you're
- 24:31Speaker 4: gonna get a big league check in your pocket. And
- 24:34Speaker 4: that is the beauty of baseball, coming from a guy
- 24:37Speaker 4: who did, like I said, didn't make the big leagues
- 24:39Speaker 4: until I was thirty. And you have to find your way,
- 24:43Speaker 4: and it's your way because when you get optioned down
- 24:46Speaker 4: or dfad, nobody cares, but you do, so do every
- 24:52Speaker 4: you have a superpower. It's okay, thank you, thank you.
- 24:56Speaker 5: Yeah, it's uh, it's a crazy it's a crazy thing.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Because even when I was fifteen sixteen, like I threw
- 25:04Speaker 6: a lot slower than I do now, and it took
- 25:07Speaker 6: a long time to realize that, like I was still
- 25:10Speaker 6: able to get people out, not throwing hard, And then
- 25:13Speaker 6: it took me a little bit longer to have confidence
- 25:15Speaker 6: in that, and then once I just had screw it,
- 25:17Speaker 6: like that's what I got and that's what you're gonna get.
- 25:21Speaker 5: That really kind of helped me a lot.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Well, it's an awesome story. We appreciate the time. These
- 25:26Speaker 2: are great ones for us. Yes, we've got the man
- 25:28Speaker 2: with experience on the desk here. So yeah, not many
- 25:31Speaker 2: shows where you're like, yep, I'm gott an interviewed guy,
- 25:33Speaker 2: A guy who took just as long, yeah, longer.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Longer, he got their way before, so he's he's he
- 25:38Speaker 4: must be a prospect compared to me. But now now
- 25:42Speaker 4: Scott said, we were we were questioning how to say
- 25:44Speaker 4: your name? What's the worst? What's the worst pa announcing
- 25:48Speaker 4: of your name, your last name that anybody's done.
- 25:52Speaker 6: I think the worst one is probably Russhi. That's they
- 25:58Speaker 6: say it like with a you in there, like uh
- 26:01Speaker 6: like Rashi Rice, like the football player. I think that's
- 26:05Speaker 6: probably the worst one.
- 26:06Speaker 4: But that's the worst one, not like not Rashy, like
- 26:10Speaker 4: oh here comes Rashie again, he's real Rashy.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Well that's that's actually how you pronounce it, so that
- 26:15Speaker 5: would be.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I thought it was more it was a mix of
- 26:22Speaker 2: A and I because that's how I kind of heard it,
- 26:24Speaker 2: like Tayler rashi, which a little broadcaster trick if you
- 26:27Speaker 2: don't know, that's how you do it, right, Like you
- 26:30Speaker 2: just mix. Yeah, you hear the mix on a lot
- 26:32Speaker 2: of names. That's what you do. But it's rat not raw.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:37Speaker 6: So everyone teammates, coaches, everyone always calls me rashi, which
- 26:42Speaker 6: I'm totally used to. But the right way is rash.
- 26:48Speaker 4: There you go beat more, you know, that's what where
- 26:52Speaker 4: That's what you used to say about Todd too, he's
- 26:54Speaker 4: very rashy.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Hey, well this was great Taylor. Thanks for joining us.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Now the world knows the name. And keep doing your thing. Man,
- 27:06Speaker 2: it's a great story.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Awesome. Thank you guys for having me on. I appreciate it.
