- 1:41wine, Fort Wine. What is America's favorite wine? And you'll know why
- 1:47when you try your first class of Petrie California Port. Petre Port is a
- 1:52deep, deep red and when you hold petri Port up to the light,
- 1:56you can practically see through the glass. That's because pet Report is so clear,
- 2:01one sure sign of a good wine. But the way pet Report tastes
- 2:07is what really comes. And I can tell you it's so delicious. You
- 2:10want to sip it slowly so you won't miss a single drop of that marvelous
- 2:15Petry flavor. And you want to serve pet Report to your friends too,
- 2:20at the dinner or anytime they drop in for a visit. And naturally you
- 2:23can serve pet Report proudly because those letters P. E. T RI I
- 2:30fell the proudest name in the long history of fine wine. Well, it's
- 2:53Monday night and San Francisco, and we have a date with Gregory Hood.
- 2:59A little earlier, Gregory phoned me to say that he was working late at
- 3:01his office, So let's join him there, shall we come in? Hello
- 3:07Harry in Gregory. Sorry to drag you over here, but I really was
- 3:10tied up. Is that's all right? I'm quite impressed to see the sea
- 3:15head of Gregory Hood. Importers has to work late occasionally, dislike anyone else.
- 3:19Oh, yes, Harry, I mustn't think that all my time is
- 3:21spent gallivanting around San Francisco quite a hard working man. On occasion, this
- 3:24afternoon, for instance, we received a particularly valuable shipment from China, some
- 3:30exquisite jade pieces. I've been examining and cataloging them myself. Is this peace
- 3:35on the desk part of the collection? Yes? You want to buy its?
- 3:38Well? What is? It? Looks like just a chunk of jade
- 3:40where a hole through it? It is, Harry, but it also happens
- 3:44to be an archer summaring ten period, two hundred and six PCs. How
- 3:49much in your case, Harry, I'll make a special price, say fifteen
- 3:53thousand dollars. I'm afraid not. I'm a little short this month. It's
- 3:58a beautiful specimen, Harry. I must show this to Richard Gump. He's
- 4:01got the finest collection in town. You know, it's funny this shipment arrived
- 4:05today. Why because the story I'm going to tell you tonight concerned the shipment
- 4:09of jade that I received just over a year ago. Only on that occasion,
- 4:13it was for me jade, and it gave me one of the worst
- 4:15headaches I've ever had. In fact, i'd done nearly got myself murdered.
- 4:18Murdered how well, it's a salliatory tale that proves that being an amateur detective
- 4:24is a foolish and dangerous occupation. I suppose the story really began about six
- 4:29years ago in Lieutenant Silver's office in homicide. My old friend was patiently trying
- 4:33to sweat the truth out of a certain gent by the name of Lenn Carter,
- 4:38a murderer with come on, Carty, you know we've got your cold.
- 4:44Ain't got nothing on recovery. Why don't you be smart, Pete guilty
- 4:46and take a self defense wrap. Otherwise it's the gas chamber. Not to
- 4:50that I was in tom Ell at the time of the murder. See,
- 4:53I'm sticking to it. Hello, Hi, Greg, STI lat today.
- 4:57Yeah, this is one rat that won't squeal. Greg. I've got a
- 5:00friend outside Stan. I'd like you to meet her. Look, Greg,
- 5:02I have no time for wenches now. I don't know that i'd call her
- 5:05a wench. Stan inflation is set in somewhat, but I think she'll interest
- 5:11you and you Carter, I do not know if they it's funny. She
- 5:14knows you. Her name's Dodo Wearing, and she's prepared to testify that she
- 5:17spent an hour with you in San Francisco on the night of the murder.
- 5:21Okay, gregoryhood, I know who you are, and I'll get you for
- 5:25this. I'll get you at the last thing I do. As a matter
- 5:30of fact, it was the last thing he did too, but that comes
- 5:32later. How did you round up the girl, Gregory? I have my
- 5:36contact Harry. How bad? What happened to corner? Well? He had
- 5:40a good lawyer and got off at Man's daughter went off to San Quentin,
- 5:44still swearing I'd pay with my life for putting the finger on him. I
- 5:47never gave him another thought until one night just over a year ago, when
- 5:50my friend and attorney Sanderson Taylor, and I were having drinks at the top
- 5:54of the Mark. I, by an art coincidence, was waiting there to
- 5:58keep an appointment with an leaving a beautiful young woman. Gregory, Yes,
- 6:04Sandy, what's her name? Whose name? The girl you're waiting for?
- 6:09I didn't say I was waiting for a girl. You didn't have to.
- 6:12I know you well enough to recognize the symptoms, the red carnation in your
- 6:15button hole and the way you've been eyeing your watch. Tell their own story.
- 6:18What's her name, Sherry Drake, New Conquest. This is to be
- 6:23something of a business meeting, Sandy, And I'm sure you use the word
- 6:27business loosely. Don't be cynical, Sandy. By the way, much as
- 6:30I love your company, will you beat a snappy retreat when the young lady
- 6:33arrived afraid of competition? Eh, you're aging, Gregory, don't worry.
- 6:38Soon as I finished his last support, I'll be on my way in any
- 6:41case, I have a wife and two children waiting for me in Berkeley.
- 6:44Hell no, isn't that Lieutenant Silver standing in the entrance at Oh? Sure
- 6:47it is Benley? There he comes, Oh Gregory, Oh evening, mister
- 6:51t Gregory, my boy, are stuck with a guest tonight. I know
- 6:56it's due any moment. I don't know about it. She You're stuck with
- 6:59me for the evening. Look stand, you are a man of irresistible charms.
- 7:03Some of your anecdotes are fascinating, and you play a wizard a game
- 7:06of chess. Another evening. We'll have a long session together. But great,
- 7:11I'm going to have to insist, greg what's up? Lam Carter got
- 7:14parole today? Lin Carter that's the man that you put the finger on five
- 7:17years ago. And Greg, remember he touched you at the time I talk.
- 7:19The guys were in store with him. Greg, he's still squaring vengeance
- 7:23and no need to take that very seriously. Is I think there is?
- 7:27We put a tail on him the moment he got turned loose, but he
- 7:29gave him a slip, and I'm sticking with you, Greg until he turns
- 7:31up. If he's hurting a rod, there's a parole violation and we've got
- 7:35him. But I'm keeping you safe until then. I appreciate your concerns,
- 7:40Stand, but I can look after myself and it'll be safer to let the
- 7:42lieutenant stick with you Gregory. But I've got a date and see'ze a crowd.
- 7:46Don't you worry. Greg, I can be the scold, but stand,
- 7:48I'm going I'll leave you guys to fight it out. What's in the
- 7:51package? Look a little presence for you? Greg? What is it?
- 7:55A wig? One for grinding smoke? Oh? Greg, it's a lot
- 7:58more practical than that, and it's something we'd better discuss before your young lady
- 8:01shows up. All right, but that's not all we're going to discuss.
- 8:05You Doenna. Are you sure we're not boring you, Lieutenant Silver, don't
- 8:22worry about me, young lady, but we do worry about you, San.
- 8:26We've been sitting here at the top of the mark for nearly an hour
- 8:28and all you've done is to drink four gigantic orangeades and look gloomy. Are
- 8:33you quite sure you wouldn't like to take a nice long ride on the cable
- 8:35car and meet us somewhere later? Yes, greg I'm quite sure. Just
- 8:39carry on, don't mind me. Do you usually have a chaperone you take
- 8:43girls? Greg's not as a rule. It's rather cramped my stone and it's
- 8:46quite as that, Gregory. Where did you get my numbers? Harry Bartel
- 8:50gave me the idea by an art coincidence. He was talking about Sherry the
- 8:54other night, and I thought what a nice name it would be for girls.
- 8:58So I summed through the phone until I found your Seriously, Gregory,
- 9:01how did you get it? Oh? Excuse me back in the don't hurry,
- 9:05yesda, take your time, my dear young lady. Let's not pry
- 9:09into his personal life. Let's accept the miracle of his disappearance gratefully and gets
- 9:13out of business. Disney. Yes, Sherry, I have a little unfinished
- 9:18business that I think you can help me with. Oh, this is a
- 9:20new one. Go on, Gregory. I am an importer, Sherry.
- 9:22Two months ago, somebody switched the shipment of jade on me somewhere between Hong
- 9:26Kong and San Francisco. You mean I substituted Pony jade for the real star.
- 9:31Yes, Sherry, I've been doing a little private snooping and I have
- 9:33a hunch that are gent by the name of Hillary Pierson is at the back
- 9:37of it. I found out that you knew him, and that's why I
- 9:39called you. Oh, yes, I do know him slightly, but I'm
- 9:43sure you're making a mistake, Gregory. Hillary is a straight shoot. Write
- 9:46that on that. I wouldn't. I found out quite a bit about the
- 9:48gentleman in the past few days. He's just about as straight as a regular
- 9:52worm. Good evening. She Oh, hello, Hillary, introduce me to
- 9:56your friend, won't you? Why? Yes? Hillary? Yes, missus,
- 10:00Gregory, how do you do? How do you do? So?
- 10:05I was just talking about you and I thought you might be That's why I
- 10:07came to your table. I think I know what you're doing, mister hood
- 10:09you're interested in that shipment of Sony j Stip by your agent, don't you.
- 10:13I'd be a mighty poor business man if I weren't interested. My friends
- 10:16and you somewhere required the curious notion that Sherry knows something about it? Have
- 10:20you ever thought of taking up mine? Reading? Funny, very very funny,
- 10:24mister Hood. But I warn you you're making a great mistake. I
- 10:28might even say you'd live to the greatest if I thought it was the least
- 10:31likelihood that you live at all. What are you talking about? You know
- 10:35what I'm talking about, don't you, mister Hood? Oh sure, I
- 10:37can recognize the threat just like the next man. Listen, mister Pearson.
- 10:41We're being chaperone by Lieutenant Silver, the Parmecide. He'll be back in a
- 10:43moment. Why not sit down and wait for him. He'd love to meet
- 10:46you. I have no interest in meeting policemen. Don't forget what I said
- 10:50before. You certainly had me for Gregory. Why aren't you grabbing me?
- 10:54Threatened you? Oh he's not dangerous by himself. I'll have Silver for the
- 10:58tail on him. Maybe he'll lead us to the whole game. Well,
- 11:01Cherry, do you still think he's a great shooter. He's a raft.
- 11:05I'll never see him again. Perhaps you can help me, Nevin Cherry.
- 11:07I'll tell you anything I can, Gregory, but there isn't much had a
- 11:11cute dates with the guy, Oh Deepers. Here comes to lieutenant again.
- 11:16Welcome home, San all is forgiven. Anything interesting happened in my absence,
- 11:20greg No, No, just another death threat. You're kidding, I'm not.
- 11:24People are queuing up to kill me. Well, I start a line
- 11:28for anything these days. Come on, greg give well A rather oly edge
- 11:31inist. Gentleman by the name of Hillary Pierson just came up to our tables.
- 11:33In a voice simply dripping with vitriol. He suggested, Grace Scott Sanday's
- 11:39come back. Remember I'm popular tonight. What's wrong? Sandays? I was
- 11:43worried about what the lieutenant told us about Lem Carter, so I told buy
- 11:46your apartments. I didn't get too good a look at the man across the
- 11:48street, but I'm certain it was caught good. We've got him. Now,
- 11:50come on, how about me. I'm not letting go of you now,
- 11:54Jerry, come along and watch the fan. I'm Gregory. You can't
- 11:56bring a girl. Look Sandy, whose murder is this yours or mine?
- 11:58Come on, come on, everybody, Well, here's the apartment. If
- 12:16there's any shooting. Jerry dropped down in the back seat and keeps down.
- 12:18Don't worry about me, Gregory. The guy's still there. See him in
- 12:20the doorways. Carter, all right, I'll open the side window a little.
- 12:24I don't want to have to use this rod, but i'll keep his
- 12:28handy. Cart has spotted us. He's moving back in the doorway. Let's
- 12:30see if I can talk a little sentimto him. Carter, don't be a
- 12:33Doerry. Okay, Carter, tryus went off the side, got him then,
- 12:39come on. Held down the steps when you're winged. I think he's
- 12:45dead, Jerry, he's gonna stayed in the car. I can't feel he
- 12:50is dead. He can't see. I wasn't flaiming to kill. Here's one
- 12:52of your bullets in his legs. He must have hit his head as he
- 12:54fell down the steps. His neck's broken. Must have died, you shuret
- 13:00darling. You seem remarkably handed with corpses. I can take it up.
- 13:07I'm so saying she fainted, Okay, Sandy, I've got her. Poor
- 13:09kid. The whole thing has been little too much for her. It's been
- 13:13a little bit too much for me too. He's a brave girl, Greg
- 13:16here, Yes, but it's rather spoils of the evening, doesn't it.
- 13:18Nothing else to do now but take the lady home and the crops of the
- 13:20margue. Oh understand? Yes? Greg? Uh? Thanks? What for
- 13:28about Copper? I mean, whether he was gunning for me or gip it?
- 13:35Greg? Come on, let's get moving. Well, this evening didn't
- 13:56turned out the way I planned it, Not for me. I should have
- 13:58been back in Berkeley hours ago. I was speaking for myself. I had
- 14:01a twelve minute what a bride kid, Greg, very welcome Fan, and
- 14:05I'm glad to see you sand If you driving me home, I'll see you
- 14:07in the morney. Okay, good night, Rag, good night night fan.
- 14:11A right, Greg, wait here until we see your lights go on?
- 14:13Might be someone else waiting for it. Okay, but I think you
- 14:16overestimate my popularity. No, m I get my food into the doom,
- 14:31lem talk to get the castered, and my girl friends friends, and he's
- 14:35got a family who's there? Because I know you're there, Come out of
- 14:43those shadows. Come on, my right, Gregory, Right? Did I
- 14:56get you? Help me out? I'm okay? So you see who it
- 15:01was? No, only must escape by the backstairs. Oh thank the lord
- 15:07who brought me that bullet hoop best slam. Oh so that was the presence
- 15:09he gave Gregory at the marks And yes, here sucky thing. I didn't
- 15:13take it off after Carter was dead, and even with a steel vest.
- 15:16Three bullets in the belly kind of knocked you off load. Here's a note
- 15:20under your door, mat What is it? Flame, mister Taylor. See,
- 15:26I told you i'd get you if it was the last thing I did
- 15:30well, and it signed lemb Cotter. But Lamb's dead. Oh I gets
- 15:35the pattern now. Somebody who wanted to kill me took advantage of Carter's release
- 15:39to frame it on him, not knowing he was dead already. And so
- 15:43it didn't work. Oh yes it did. Stand I was murdered. What
- 15:48what bright new triggers this? Gregory? I was killed? Or at least
- 15:52we'll let the would be murderer think though it will lull him. Good idea,
- 15:56Gregg, I'll go ahead with an official vest investigation. Sign Stan,
- 15:58you do that and I'll calm the underground in my own ways, speaking of
- 16:03a very recent corpse, I think I may say I'm going to enjoy solving
- 16:07my own murder. You'll hear the rest of Gregory Hood's story in the second,
- 16:23which is all the time I need to tell you about Petrie California muscatell.
- 16:29If you ever tried Petrie muscatels, I've noticed that it seems to be
- 16:33a particular favorite of the lady. Perhaps that's because Petrie Muscatel has such a
- 16:38beautiful golden color, bright as sunshine, But most likely it's because Petrie Muscatel
- 16:45has a flavor. It comes right from the heart of plump, luscious muscat
- 16:49grape. Like Petri Port, Petri Muscatel is just perfect at the dinner.
- 16:56As a matter of fact, why not buy a bottle of Petri and the
- 17:00bottle of Petrie muskuld Tell don't buy one by two, but remember always by
- 17:07Petrick Gregory. How did it feel to be a walking court? Surprisingly pleasant,
- 17:14Harry. In fact, I'd say that the professional zombie probably has quite
- 17:18a gay life. Did you find out who fired those three shots? Ackings?
- 17:22Oh? Yes, yes, but that comes a little later in the
- 17:23story. At the time, my only suspect was Hillary piss After all,
- 17:26he threatened my life a short while before. True. But and this is
- 17:30almost terresy, Gregg, you know who I suspect, fool the girl Jerry,
- 17:37And may I say how much I like that name? You may?
- 17:40In fact, I'd like to go a little further and Harry. Okay,
- 17:45but it seemed to me that if this girl was mixed up with the Jay
- 17:48get Harry, don't you see? Because she was with us when len Carter
- 17:51was killed, she was the only person who knew positively that she couldn't hope
- 17:53to frame a later killing on him. Yes, so well, Greg,
- 17:57what did you do next? I say, Harry person was my only suspect,
- 18:02and I had a hunch it wasn't he. First, it wasn't his
- 18:03style, and second, the time element seemed to rule him out. But
- 18:07fortunately I have some interesting contacts with the underworld, and I knew where to
- 18:11look for further suspects. While Sandy Taylor waited in my apartment, I spent
- 18:14a profitable half hour with some crape hair and a bottle of spirit gum,
- 18:18giving myself what I thought would be quite a convincing beard. Yeah, there's
- 18:22an official corpse. I guess you had to disguise yourself. And then Sandy
- 18:26and I drove over to a little hideaway on Market Street, a bar known
- 18:29as the Scarlet Dolphins. It has the most persistent juke box. Oh,
- 18:33poor old Sandy, he's so patient with me. Then, ah, I
- 18:44just call Mary. Well, Sandy, did you explain your absence satisfactorily?
- 18:47Yes, Mary's wonderfully understanding, just the same. I can almost see that
- 18:51patient, knowing smile of hers when I tell her I'm going to a bar
- 18:53with you strictly on business. Mary is a very remarkable girl. Incidentally,
- 18:59now that we're here, what are we doing in the Scarlet souton? Waiting
- 19:02to talk to Ole O'Leary. Oleo'laring an expert on yodling, no doubt?
- 19:07Can he help it? If he had an Irish father and the Swedish mother,
- 19:10what's his specialtist? He's a windshil of the underworld. Oh, Famley,
- 19:12this grape hair is driving me crazy. If you must go around being
- 19:15a corpse, Greggory, at least you deserve to be uncomfortable. Becomes only
- 19:18enough. I let's seem actually we don't want to drink only just information.
- 19:26Uh, Gregory, what did you do with that chim being a corpse only?
- 19:30Can you use a fins? Are you kidding? Come to daddy?
- 19:36Thanks? Gregs. What do you want to know? Did you know Lem
- 19:38Cotton was out of hawk Sure get out this morning? You know his contact?
- 19:42Yeah? Just one though, Greg a day, name and address only.
- 19:47We'll be hat defon's your apartment, son Turk. Thanks Oly Hello,
- 19:49Okay, thanks for the finn. Good luck Greg. Now when Ruby comes
- 20:04through the doors, Andy, remember that you're playing this scene. I don't
- 20:07worry, Gregory. I'm not simple mind and the child of three. Yeah,
- 20:12miss Ruby Hart? Yeah, may we come in? Who are you?
- 20:18I'm mister Gregory Hood's lawyer, and this is my secretary, mister Bunker
- 20:22Gregory Hood's lawyer. Huh, yes, okay, come in. Well that's
- 20:32on your mind. You may have heard that lem Carter was killed at tee
- 20:37me. No I didn't. I'm as cares all running because I was reading
- 20:41a sad book. And listen, brother, if you can't hit a glow
- 20:44on idle of Crown yet but I haven't. Mister Hood feels that he is
- 20:47in part liable for Lem Carter's death. And he ain't hidden brother. He
- 20:49wishes to make some financial contribution. He feels that if mister Carter had any
- 20:53close associates or depends them had me. That's all and that's enough, or
- 21:00it could have been you've known him for some time. I've known him no
- 21:03time. Never heard him before he went to San Quentin. But I had
- 21:06a brother, mister buddy of Len's Fair. Then got my letter to go,
- 21:08and so he started writing to me and I wrote back to him.
- 21:11See made me come alive all over that letter writing. So he came out
- 21:18and saw me. That's once. Yes today it was just like his letter
- 21:25when he was fresh and blood in him. The night's dead and I got
- 21:30lawyers calling around me asking about financial dependence and stuff. It was just us.
- 21:34See then, didn't see nobody else before they got him. All our
- 21:38lives there was going to be nobody but us. And I want to get
- 21:41this can hill out of here. I want to go on reading that sad
- 21:45book. Leave me, miss Park. When I say that, mister wood
- 21:47cam futher you so brother gets moving, I'm yeah, yeah, break your
- 21:51heart good night, then sorry that he missed it, all right, that
- 21:57was your job then, man me too, poor girl. I'm sorry for
- 22:00her, oh am, I Sandy, I feel like a rather elderly near
- 22:04white flood about those financial contributions. As Ruby would say, I ain't kidding,
- 22:10brother. Anybody that can find good in limb cotta desaves all I can
- 22:12do. But this was a dead end. No food's there. What's the
- 22:15next move, Gregory? The jade trail and the girl named Sherry. It's
- 22:19only eleven, said, he not too late to call. Why not remove
- 22:22the beard? No, Sandy, No, she's a brave girl. Let's
- 22:25see how she faces up to midnight shadow ptentually. I'll play the next scene
- 22:29alone if you don't mind. I don't mind. I'll wait for you in
- 22:32your apartment. Too late to drive back to Berkeley to night anyway, If
- 22:34your wife only knew a smart attorney, she could cite me as good ground
- 22:38for divorce. Okay, Sandy, wait for me back at the apartment.
- 22:41I have the feeling that the next scene won't take very long, Gregory,
- 22:55I'm so glad you came back. Seems to night. That's the same when
- 22:57you walked in wearing that risdicul you were down near fainted again. Sury,
- 23:03I should have might have been smart too. I understand it, and like
- 23:06a lady likes woon, not to the extent of complete unconsciousness. How are
- 23:11you feeling now? Nice place you have here, Sherry. It's a modest
- 23:15little check, but I like it, Gregory. Yes, you look worried.
- 23:19Quite frankly, I am what's wrong? If try I let you tonight?
- 23:23Somebody tried to ventilate me with billets? Great? No, fortunately I
- 23:29was wearing a tin vest. Otherwise I'd be in the morgue. Now where
- 23:32did it happening my apartment? Could you see what it was? No?
- 23:34No, it was too dark. Sure. Yes, I've got a list
- 23:38of questions a yard long for you, But before I asked them, I
- 23:42I want to do a little checking. Do you mind if I use your
- 23:45phone? Of course? Not good? You see, officially I'm supposed to
- 23:48be a corpse. Well I wish you'd stop being one. I don't like
- 23:51bearded man. Well, I may be able to take it off as soon
- 23:53as I've made this call, Lieutenant Silver's in time for you. Yes a
- 24:00minute. Did Hillary Pearson call you this evening? Jerry? Really? No,
- 24:04no one's called This is Gregory. Hi, greg did you dig up
- 24:08any leaves, No san how about you? Nothing yet? Well, that's
- 24:11one thing you might want to know about that note we caught in your doorsteps,
- 24:15the one from Carter. Yah, there's no chance to navigate the handwriting
- 24:18yet, but loudly with Cotton's fingerprints. What's that? I think the note
- 24:22was loudly with Cotton's fingerprint? That a gett anything to you? Yes?
- 24:27Yes it does. It gives me the answer. Thanks? Then learn anything,
- 24:33Gregory, Yes, I did, Serry, maybe everything before you tell
- 24:38me about it. Come over here on the sofa. I want to show
- 24:41you my pet. You no night on the day. We don't need a
- 24:45life, do we. Oh it's beautiful, Gregory. So are you,
- 24:52Sherry? Thank you, sir. You're very beautiful, and you wore gloves
- 24:57this evening. Didn't you don't talk much? Yes? Maybe I could lend
- 25:03you like the night. There's only one end of that, darling. That
- 25:22wasn't a very gentlemanly action, Gregory. I know, Sandy, but my
- 25:25old father used to say, never strike a woman until she pulls a knife
- 25:27on your Shouldn't that be unless my old father always said until? Maybe that's
- 25:33why I'm still a bachelor. Did you have much of a job getting her
- 25:36over to the station. No, she was out cold until Silvera's got there,
- 25:38and then she screamed bloody murder and fought like a wildcat. Quite a
- 25:41female. Did he still anything? Splenty? Who if Pearson was at the
- 25:45back of it, philba is picking him up tonight and in the morning.
- 25:48I prefer charges, and with Sherry on the spot, I don't think it's
- 25:51going to be hard to track down our jay. She was a smart girl
- 25:53and realized you'd guessed her secret the moment you'd talk to Silvery. No,
- 25:56she must have heard him talking about the fingerprints. But it was smart figuring
- 26:00on her past and on yours to Gregory. You see, the fingerprints proved
- 26:03the note was genuinely from Carta. He planned to leave it by your body
- 26:07after he shot you. I stole it instead of which he was shot first.
- 26:11Therefore the note was stolen from his body. Only Sherry could have done
- 26:14that while she was performing her nurse's aid act of the corpse. The fact
- 26:18that she was wearing gloves kept her fingerprints off the note. She was a
- 26:22SmartLess dance, smart because she appeared to be the one person who couldn't have
- 26:26framed the dead carta. She thought the frame up attempts would clear her completely.
- 26:30The doubles, which a rule, very neat, and I nearly fell
- 26:33for it. It was quick thinking on your piece it all together as soon
- 26:37as you had the phone message. I almost wish I hadn't pieced it together
- 26:40quite so fast. Sandy? Why Gregory? Oh? The man asks why?
- 26:45Sherry was a very beautiful girl, Sandy, And the moonlight was quite
- 26:48potent. Sometimes I must tell you what my old father used to say about
- 26:53that. Well, Greg is usual. That story was a knockout. You're
- 27:08the most popular corpse i've met an eighty Yes, Harry means that everybody's just
- 27:12dying to kill me. Ooh, and that girl Sherry. You know,
- 27:18Harry, there's one woman who almost got me for live and I didn't tell
- 27:22me, Harry, if she succeeded, would you miss me? Greg?
- 27:25How can you talk like that? Would you really miss our little Monday evening
- 27:27get together? Why? Sure? I feel a little silly talking about Petry
- 27:32wine and myself. I should have known one track mind battel. But I
- 27:36guess you're right. Good detectives are a dime a dozen, but good wine
- 27:41ah, And when you say good wine, naturally you mean Petrie wine.
- 27:45Why. The Petrie family has been making wine for generations. The art of
- 27:48turning luscious sun ripened grapes into delicious, fragrant wine is their heritage, a
- 27:56heritage handed on down within the Petrie family from father to son and fathered his
- 28:00son. No wonder Petrie wine is so good. No wonder the Petrie business
- 28:07is grown and grown so. But today the Petrie family are America's largest independent
- 28:11wine makers. Yes, the making of Petrie wine is a family affair,
- 28:15and the Petrie family has every intention of keeping it that way, because by
- 28:21so doing they can be sure that every bottle of wine that bears the name
- 28:23Petrie is and always will be good wine. Well, graduate, what page
- 28:30of your notebook are you turning to next week? Next week, Harry,
- 28:33I'm going to tell you an odd story that took place in an extremely dense
- 28:37fog in the Berkeley Hills. It concerns the disappearing wife, a haunted house,
- 28:41and a hot playonet player. And see your next Monday, Harry.
- 29:03The Case Book of Gregory Hood is written by Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher.
- 29:07Original music is composed and played by Dean Fossler. Dale Gordon plays the part
- 29:12of Gregory Hood and Sanderson Taylor is played by Art Gilmore. The Petry Wine
- 29:27Company of San Francisco, California invites you to tune in again next week,
- 29:33same time, same station. The Case Book of Gregory Hood comes to you
- 29:37from our Hollywood studio. This is Harry Bartel saying good night for the Patrie
- 29:45family, welcome back. Well. I liked him working Harry Bartel into the
- 29:52story and with the suggestion that he dated her because her name was Sherry,
- 30:02and Harry Bartell mentioned Sherry quite a bit, though I get from what I
- 30:08gather the next week his date will be with a girl named Muscatel. The
- 30:14one thing, of course, that doesn't quite work about this is that the
- 30:18meeting between Gregory Hood and Harry Bartell was a lot more recent than the year
- 30:23before. But we go ahead and we'll let that pass. For the most
- 30:27part, this was just a pretty entertaining case and nice bit of a twist.
- 30:33Ending all right, want to listener comments and feedback, And we have
- 30:37this from Brian who writes regarding the Case Book of Gregory Hood, looking forward
- 30:42to hearing this really enjoyed mister Cameleon skips and all. Well, thanks so
- 30:48much, Brian, glad to hear it about mister Cameleon. And actually Andrew
- 30:55Ryans several years ago he did a survey of his audience as to what they
- 31:00wanted him to do with poor sound quality programs and injurynes of course at OTR
- 31:07Westerns dot com, and they said to go ahead and play them. And
- 31:11while I've never conducted a formal survey, that has been my instinct, and
- 31:19I think that in indication of what most people want to hear, we're understanding
- 31:26of difficulties that sometimes occur with old time radio programs, which were after all
- 31:36saved by people who were in many cases great radio fans but amateurs, or
- 31:41were captured in some way like a real to real recording tape off the radio
- 31:48that doesn't necessarily produce the best recordings. So if it's intelligible and we can
- 31:55get the ending and we kind of get what's going on in the case,
- 31:57and it's in a series we're doing, we'll probably play it. So thanks
- 32:02for your comment, Brian, I truly appreciate it. That'll do it for
- 32:06today, Join us tomorrow as we continue on with the open town matter,
- 32:10and we'll be back next week to open up another file from the casebook of
- 32:15Gregory Hood. In the meantime, sender comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
