- 0:00Welcome to Frontline static, we will get to hear interviews with
- 0:02some of my clients journeys of getting into flight and how they
- 0:05utilize coaching to help them create success of getting hired
- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the flight prep group.
- 0:16Hey guys, welcome to episode 117 of How to Become a Flight Nurse
- 0:20podcast. You might hear some
- 0:23interruptions. I still have my kids home for
- 0:26summer vacation. They're getting ready to start
- 0:28school in the next actual week and a half.
- 0:30They start next Thursday. So if any of you guys are
- 0:34parents and you're listening to this, you know what it's like at
- 0:37the end of summer and you're ready for your kids to go back
- 0:40to school. So you might hear them and they
- 0:44might pop in. But we're going to do our best
- 0:46to deliver this podcast episode for you today.
- 0:48I've been thinking about this setting goals.
- 0:52And so usually each week we're talking about something that has
- 0:56to do with flight. But I think that you guys can
- 0:58take this episode and really utilize it for your flight goal
- 1:03as well. But I want to just talk about
- 1:05goal setting in general. This week I'm starting a 30 day
- 1:09challenge inside the flight prep Academy.
- 1:12I'm actually bringing along the all flight nurse and flight
- 1:16medic group as well. So I run two programs.
- 1:19I have the flight prep Academy that's for nurses and medics
- 1:22that want to get into flight. And then I everybody who have
- 1:25helped transition into flight and who's received an offer,
- 1:28they move automatically into my all flight nurse and all flight
- 1:34medic group where we're talking about transitioning into the
- 1:37role, how to be successful in orientation and just how to
- 1:41confidently do well in this new position.
- 1:44And so for the month of August, starting tomorrow, I'm going to
- 1:48be kicking off what's called a 30 day challenge inside both
- 1:51programs. And for both programs, we're
- 1:53going to be meeting instead of weekly calls, we're going to be
- 1:56meeting twice a week. So Tuesdays and Thursdays for
- 1:58this 30 day challenge. Of course, every call is
- 2:00recorded because not everybody can make it live.
- 2:02So in this challenge, what I'm having them do is create a goal
- 2:07that they want to achieve in 30 days.
- 2:10And the point of this challenge is to not only set a goal, but
- 2:14to collapse your timeline. And I'm going to add this added
- 2:18caveat and this added challenge inside it of collapsing your
- 2:22timeline, of getting to this goal without hustling and
- 2:25without overworking, but by just using your mind and growing your
- 2:29belief, your confidence, and your capacity to do it in
- 2:32yourself. And so this is the first time
- 2:36we're going to run the challenge.
- 2:37I'm really excited to have both groups together, but I want you
- 2:39guys to kind of follow along in this journey.
- 2:41And I'm going to be bringing you little snippets and things that
- 2:43we're going to be that we have been talking about and
- 2:45discussing as we do this 30 day goal.
- 2:48But today I just want to talk about goal setting in general.
- 2:51I want to bring this to you because this is something since
- 2:54I found coaching a couple years ago.
- 2:56So I, I became certified as a life coach through the Life
- 3:00Coach school in 2021 and I started my coaching business
- 3:09then. And at first I wanted to do
- 3:11general life coaching for healthcare workers and 1st
- 3:13responders. And then I just got a lot of
- 3:16inquiries about how to get into flight.
- 3:18And so I started coaching people and mentoring them and then
- 3:22getting them results and then getting them hired and half the
- 3:24amount of time. And so since then, I've really
- 3:27created a five step process to get hired in the flight.
- 3:30And I've created an entire program where I coupled that
- 3:32with weekly calls and a community group chat where I
- 3:37help support you all the way to an offer when you join.
- 3:40But coaching, what coaching has really taught me is how to push
- 3:43my mind to create beliefs in myself that move the needle
- 3:49forward without doing more and without hustling and
- 3:54overworking. Meaning the actions that I'm
- 3:56going to take are going to be very potent and move me towards
- 4:00my goal. The other thing that coaching
- 4:02has really helped me do is collapse timeline.
- 4:05So I want to give you an example of this.
- 4:08What I do every year, and this probably isn't different from
- 4:12much of you guys, is at the beginning of the year in
- 4:14January, I create goals that I want for myself personally,
- 4:17professionally, family wise. I create all these goals and
- 4:24what I do is I decide what are the goals that I want to create
- 4:28in the year and then what's the result.
- 4:31I give myself specific results of what's the result that I want
- 4:34to create at the end of the year and then what I do and what I
- 4:39have learned to do. And I'm going to kind of teach
- 4:41you guys this process in this episode.
- 4:43And this is what going to be working on in the 30 day
- 4:45challenge is I take whatever result that I want to create by
- 4:49the end of the year, and then I challenge myself to start
- 4:52creating it now. And what this does is it not
- 4:56only cuts my timeline in half, but it moves up the actions that
- 5:01I'm taking. It makes the actions that I'm
- 5:02taking very potent and makes me working towards things maybe a
- 5:06little bit differently. And I'm going to give you some
- 5:08examples of that. But what I've learned to do is
- 5:12get so good at this that the goals that I create and set for
- 5:17myself in December, I'm now starting to achieve by the
- 5:22beginning of the year. And so that's just moving my
- 5:26timeline up and helping me either grow those results or be
- 5:32able to make some new goals. And it doesn't mean that I'm
- 5:36hustling and overworking to get there, but I'm creating beliefs
- 5:39in myself and taking the actions that's going to move the needle
- 5:42forward in those goals. So I'm going to give you some
- 5:44examples examples. An example of this that I have
- 5:50really, really been working on in the last two years inside my
- 5:54program is trying to get people hired before the three-year
- 5:58mark. Now, what I've noticed is a lot
- 6:00of people, especially when I was trying to get into flight almost
- 6:0310 years ago, people were just spending time getting a ton of
- 6:08time and experience. So they're jumping around
- 6:10departments trying to get as much critical care, ICUER,
- 6:15pediatric, and they were just stacking their resume.
- 6:19And what I was finding is that most people, even though the
- 6:24requirements for flight companies said three years,
- 6:28people would not start applying till they've had six, 7-8 years.
- 6:33And I started thinking about that, especially I got into
- 6:37flight. Like what is it about that that
- 6:39has people, even though it says three years on the requirements
- 6:43of either ER or ICU, what makes people on an average have seven
- 6:48or eight years or sometimes 10 years before they apply?
- 6:51And I realized it's because people think that to get to
- 6:55flight jacking more on their resume can help them feel more
- 7:00confident and they think that getting all the time and
- 7:03experience is going to make them a better applicant.
- 7:07So what I'm doing with my program is I really teach you a
- 7:11five step process. I teach you through the process
- 7:14of like Step 1 is a flight mindset.
- 7:17Step 2 is mapping out your plan earlier on in your career.
- 7:20Step 3 is doing ride alongs, making connections with flight
- 7:23companies, Step 4 is getting your resume flight ready, and
- 7:26Step 5 is prepping for flight interviews specifically.
- 7:30And so two years ago I decided I really want to help the people
- 7:37inside my program and test this, this theory that I had that it's
- 7:45not about time and experience that hire that that flight
- 7:48companies are hiring you. That is who you are, what you
- 7:50value, the team player you are three years minimum ERISU doing
- 7:55this five step process is going to get you hired.
- 7:57And so two years ago, I really started pushing, trying to help
- 8:01get people get hired before the three-year mark.
- 8:05And this year alone, I have helped four or five people get
- 8:08hired at the 2 1/2 year mark of working ERICU and one at the one
- 8:13year mark of working just ER, no certs, no CN, no CCRN, none of
- 8:18that is needed. And the and, and how I have done
- 8:22this is I set this goal for myself two years ago to really
- 8:26look at this theory of, of really saying time and
- 8:33experience is not the thing that's going to get you hired.
- 8:35If we just focus in on the five step process, can this get these
- 8:39people hired at the 2 1/2 year mark before the three-year mark?
- 8:42And the way that I did this and the way that I moved up this
- 8:45timeline is that I had to have the belief that my program and
- 8:51my process really worked. And when I did that and I
- 8:54coupled that with really helping people push themselves towards
- 8:57their goal of flight and really taking the right correct action
- 9:01without doing more, this is how I've created that result.
- 9:05Now, I could have just not made that goal and I could have just
- 9:08ran my program and helped people get hired at the three-year
- 9:11mark. But because I set this goal and
- 9:14I really wanted to look at this theory and grow my theory of if
- 9:19my five step process can get them there before the three
- 9:22years and me growing my belief first has really helped push up
- 9:26this timeline. So I'm going to give you guys
- 9:27some other examples. One thing that I want to offer
- 9:31in this goal setting is you got to set the goal.
- 9:35I see so many people just stay on the fence, especially with
- 9:39flight. They say, oh, I don't know.
- 9:41I don't know if I want to do this.
- 9:42I've never done it before. I don't know if I'm going to
- 9:44like the shifts. I'm not going to like the pay.
- 9:46I don't know if it's going to be good for my family.
- 9:48But here's the thing. When you decided to go out and
- 9:50become a nurse, you had no idea what it was going to be like to
- 9:53be a nurse. You had no idea what it was
- 9:56going to be like to work 3 shifts a week, to be on your
- 9:59feet 12 to 14 hours, to have very little sleep, to get very
- 10:05little time to eat and go pee and all of those things.
- 10:09And you still did it. And So what I see is people not
- 10:13even wanting to set the goal. So when it comes to goal
- 10:17setting, you got to be willing to set the goal.
- 10:21And the reason why I believe that people don't set goals is
- 10:24because they just don't want to tell people and fail or they
- 10:27don't want to set the goal in their mind and then fail.
- 10:31And I just want to offer you guys if, if, if you know that
- 10:34you're doing that right now, you are already failing because
- 10:37you're just not setting a goal or pushing yourself for a goal.
- 10:41And so when you don't do that, you remain stuck.
- 10:44You remain on the fence. So I want to offer you is like
- 10:47the first step is set the goal. And I do want to offer you.
- 10:52It's not actually about getting to the goal.
- 10:55It's about who you become in the process.
- 10:56I'm going to talk to you about that in a minute.
- 10:59So it's setting the goal and then it's also forcing yourself
- 11:04to crunch that timeline and forcing you to take actions to
- 11:08see what's like really holding you back.
- 11:11So for example, when I try when I try at the beginning of the
- 11:15year to set the goals for myself and I have these results that I
- 11:18want to create in December, when I say, hey, it would be fun to
- 11:22try to create them. Now I have to erase everything
- 11:25that I thought that I would be doing for the next 12 months to
- 11:28get to the my December goal. If I want to create this in the
- 11:31first quarter, January, February, March, I'm going to be
- 11:34taking very, very different actions than I would be if I was
- 11:38waiting to create these for the next 11 months.
- 11:41So when you crunch a timeline for something, something like
- 11:43this 30 day challenge that I'm doing, it's going to force you
- 11:46to erase everything on your on your board or on your To Do List
- 11:50that you thought would get you there.
- 11:52So when you crunch it to 30 days, for example, the things
- 11:55that you thought would work to get you to the goal in like 6
- 11:58months or a year, you're going to have to change those actions
- 12:02that you're going to take to get you there in 30 days.
- 12:05It's going to force you to level up.
- 12:07It's going to force you to critically think.
- 12:09It's going to force you to hold yourself accountable to what am
- 12:12I going to stop doing to get this done in 30 days and what am
- 12:15I going to start doing? And so I like this because I
- 12:19love critical thinking. I think that this is like
- 12:22actually what makes me a really good flight nurse and what made
- 12:24me a really good critical care nurse is that when I put
- 12:28pressure on myself, I did really well.
- 12:30And that's when I performed. And I love being able to think
- 12:32outside of the box, erase everything that you think is
- 12:36going to work and then break it all down and be creative of when
- 12:39you crunch a timeline like this, how how do you get there?
- 12:42How do you achieve it? And I think that's what made me
- 12:44do really well in the moments when I needed to, when the
- 12:47patient coded or when I had to, we had to, we had to land and
- 12:53ground the patient the rest of the way.
- 12:55I was always thinking, OK, what next?
- 12:58What I need to be doing next And not really getting stuck on what
- 13:01my game plan was. It requires a lot of
- 13:04flexibility, a lot of creativity and a lot of willingness to try
- 13:08new things. And so I love like really trying
- 13:11to crunch the timeline of getting there as well and asking
- 13:14myself like, OK, if I want to create this goal in this amount
- 13:16of time, what about if I want to create in the next 30 days?
- 13:20Everything that you're doing right now almost currently will
- 13:25not work. You're going to have to raise
- 13:27the bar. I've been reading this book.
- 13:30I don't know if you guys have heard of Ben Hardy, but he he
- 13:34has this book called 10X is greater than 2X.
- 13:37And I actually started reading this book a couple months or a
- 13:39couple years ago and I keep going back to it.
- 13:41But an example that he gives about this is that a lot of us
- 13:45just stair step in our goals. A lot of us like if we want to
- 13:49achieve something bigger, we just kind of 2X what we're
- 13:52doing, meaning we're just like kind of doubling down on what
- 13:56currently is working. So if you're critical care
- 13:59nurse, you're like just doubling down on taking more certs or
- 14:02taking more courses and trying to grow your confidence that
- 14:07way. And what he's saying is actually
- 14:10what will get you to your goals quicker is 10 Xing that goal.
- 14:14So 10 Xing means thinking about how do we crunch the timeline,
- 14:18for example, example, how do we get to flight if we want flight,
- 14:22like let's just say we're graduating from nursing school.
- 14:25Instead of thinking about getting to flight in three
- 14:27years, how do we get to flight in a year and a half?
- 14:30And when you do that, everything that you're doing, when you
- 14:33raise that bar, everything that you're currently working on is
- 14:37going to have to be erased and you're going to have to think
- 14:39about it differently. The example that he gives in his
- 14:42book 10X is greater than 2X is he has a son that plays high
- 14:46school tennis and he's actually really good at it.
- 14:49And his high school tennis coach who was really good and was a
- 14:55really good coach and did really well and his son really liked
- 14:58him, asked him, what do you what do you want to do with tennis?
- 15:01And and his son said, I don't know, maybe I want to play in
- 15:06college. And the coach said, why don't
- 15:08you want to go pro? And the son's like, I guess I
- 15:12just never considered that. And what's interesting Ben was
- 15:15saying about when his son made this decision that he wanted to
- 15:18go pro tennis is that he was already looking on like college
- 15:22coaches or like who was going to be the personal coach, the
- 15:25one-on-one coach that was going to get him to his college goal.
- 15:29And they were looking at they were looking at various
- 15:32different coaches. And he said when he made this
- 15:35goal to GoPro in the state that he lived in, there was maybe
- 15:39hundreds of coaches that would help him get into college and
- 15:44play at the level of college tennis.
- 15:47And then he said when he made the goal of wanting to go pro,
- 15:51it almost forced out every single coach that they were
- 15:54looking at. And maybe there was maybe one or
- 15:57two of those coaches that were going to get him pro.
- 16:00And if you look at this example, when you 10X your goal, when you
- 16:04crunch the timeline or when you decide to make it more of a big
- 16:10hairy audacious goal, which is called a B hag goal, I call it
- 16:13big hairy audacious goal, It forces you to erase almost
- 16:17everything that you're doing. It forces you to raise the bar.
- 16:20It has you take different actions.
- 16:23It has you stop a lot of the things that you were doing, like
- 16:26how he was looking at hundreds different, different coaches.
- 16:28And it let him start only looking and filtering out for
- 16:32the coaches that we're going to get him to GoPro.
- 16:35And so I want to offer you guys the same thing when it comes to
- 16:38the slight goal, when it comes to setting goals.
- 16:41Set a big hairy audacious goal for yourself.
- 16:45Set yourself up with crunching your timeline.
- 16:48Now, a lot of people don't want to do this because they're
- 16:50afraid they're going to fail or, OK, what maybe you're you're
- 16:53thinking, OK, but what if I don't meet that timeline?
- 16:55What if I'm just graduating nursing school and I give myself
- 16:59three years and I wanted to do three years to get to flight,
- 17:02but then I gave myself this big hairy audacious goal of 1 1/2
- 17:06and I didn't get there. But maybe you get there in 2.
- 17:10Maybe you don't get there in 1/2, but maybe you get there in
- 17:122 because what matters is that you became a different person in
- 17:17getting there and trying to get there in a 1 1/2.
- 17:21Even if you didn't get there in the 1 1/2, it forces you to take
- 17:25different actions. I know like some of this, and as
- 17:29I was learning, this is kind of blowing your mind a little bit,
- 17:31but I just wanted you guys to think about this as far as goal
- 17:34setting. Like we got to take the goals.
- 17:36It's actually not about obtaining them or failing.
- 17:40It's about becoming the person who fails, gets back up, fails,
- 17:45gets back up, takes action, moves in a different direction,
- 17:49takes a different action, moves in a different direction.
- 17:52It's the you who can constantly be flexible, consistent,
- 17:56committed, and figure it out. Our goals are not made to work
- 18:01against us. They're made to work with us.
- 18:03They're made to shape us. But we have to be willing to set
- 18:06the goal. We have to be willing to set
- 18:08these big, hairy, audacious goals.
- 18:11And this is what flight is, if you know you're the nurse that
- 18:14doesn't want to work bedside. This was me when I was in
- 18:16nursing school. I knew I didn't want to work
- 18:18bedside my whole life. I knew I wanted to have advanced
- 18:20skills. I knew I wanted to have the
- 18:22autonomy. I knew I wanted to have a tight
- 18:24knit team. I loved thinking everything
- 18:27about it. And if you want to have a big
- 18:29hairy audacious goal as a nurse and you know you don't want to
- 18:32work bedside and you know you want to do something bigger,
- 18:36flight is your big hairy audacious goal.
- 18:37And so I want to just offer you set the goal for yourself.
- 18:41People think that they don't want to make it the goal again
- 18:45because they don't they they're afraid to fail at it.
- 18:48But it it's not about getting to the goal in accomplishing it,
- 18:53It's about who you become again in the process of getting there.
- 18:57The only reason we chase goals is because we think it will make
- 19:01us feel a certain way once we get there.
- 19:05So I hear a lot of people say, hey, once I get to flight, I'm
- 19:08going to feel accomplished. Once I get to flight, I'm going
- 19:11to feel confident and I'm going to give you guys, I'm going to
- 19:17give you guys a flash forward. When you get into flight, when
- 19:22you get that offer, you're not all of a sudden magically going
- 19:25to feel confident. In fact, you're going to have a
- 19:29lot more fear than you had before.
- 19:31And so we have to build confidence from within.
- 19:35The key to getting to flight and the key to getting to any goal
- 19:38that you set for yourself is decide the way that you think
- 19:41you're going to feel when you accomplish it.
- 19:43And then you generate that feeling now.
- 19:46So if you think that you're going to feel confident or
- 19:48accomplished once you get to flight, then you want to start
- 19:51to generate confidence now. Not the confidence meaning that
- 19:54you know everything or that you feel like you have to be 100%
- 19:57confidence. No confidence is in my book and
- 20:01in my definition of confidence. Confidence is learning to know
- 20:06when you don't have the answers, who to ask, going about asking
- 20:11those people, getting what you need in the situations you need.
- 20:14Confidence is about having doubt, having fear, and still
- 20:18taking action. For me, that's confidence and
- 20:22you can't do that until you practice it.
- 20:24You have to practice getting the confidence.
- 20:26And that requires consistency, commitment, and courage.
- 20:32And so I want to offer you, if if you think that you want to
- 20:39get to flight because you want to feel confident or you want to
- 20:41feel accomplished, you want to start generating this for
- 20:44yourself right now before you get to the goal.
- 20:47That's actually how you're going to get to flight quicker.
- 20:51That's actually how you're going to get to your big hairy
- 20:53audacious goal quicker. When you think about what is a
- 20:56feeling that you think you're going to feel what you
- 20:58accomplish it and then you start generating that for yourself
- 21:00now. Now, if your question is how do
- 21:03you generate that, I'm going to take you through a four step
- 21:05process right now of of goal setting and help you think about
- 21:09that. Step one, set the goal.
- 21:13Don't let yourself be on the fence anymore.
- 21:15Set the flight goal, set the goal for yourself, set a 30 day
- 21:18challenge goal and then be specific about what it is and
- 21:21more. 30 day challenge right now inside both my programs that
- 21:24people are setting goals, for example, of get a ride along in
- 21:2730 days, do a ride along in 30 days, get a flight interview in
- 21:3030 days, get hired in the next 30 days.
- 21:33Set a goal, be specific about your time period for it.
- 21:37That's step one. Step 2 is what is the specific
- 21:40result that you want to create in this goal.
- 21:44So for example, in step one, if you set the goal of getting
- 21:48hired in 30 days, then you want your specific goal is to get an
- 21:52offer from a flight company in 3030 days or it might be get
- 21:56multiple offers. That's like something that's not
- 21:58uncommon inside my flight prep Academy is that people are
- 22:01getting multiple goals or multiple offers to flight
- 22:04companies. So be specific is Step 2 is what
- 22:07is the result that you want to create Step 3?
- 22:11What is the feeling you think you will feel at the end of
- 22:14achieving that goal? What is the feeling you think
- 22:18you will feel at the end of achieving that goal?
- 22:20So for example, if let's just continue with the example of you
- 22:24get a flight offer in the next 30 days, If you got that flight
- 22:28offer in the next 30 days, what is the feeling that you think
- 22:31that you will feel? I hear a lot of times from my
- 22:34people say proud. So if proud is the feeling that
- 22:37you think that you want to feel, then Step 4 is how can you
- 22:41generate that feeling now? How can you feel proud now?
- 22:46And the follow up questions for this, like I know the question
- 22:49in your mind is like, OK, but how do we generate that feeling
- 22:52is what beliefs do you have to about have about yourself now?
- 22:57What beliefs do you have to have about yourself now that will
- 22:59generate that feeling? So for example, if it's pride
- 23:02and proud, what's the beliefs you have to have about yourself
- 23:06right now? And start with the ones that are
- 23:08believable for you and then work up because it might be hard to
- 23:12get to. I'm so proud of everything I've
- 23:16accomplished or the the thought of or belief of I I always get
- 23:22what I set out to do. Maybe that's kind of hard to
- 23:25believe. So you want to pick beliefs that
- 23:28are believable for you right now and kind of work up on them.
- 23:31So my go to thought, and I mentioned this in last podcast
- 23:34and a lots of podcast is I'm going to always figure it out.
- 23:38And so that's usually the one that I start with.
- 23:42But if I wanted to generate pride, probably or being proud
- 23:46of myself, probably a belief that I would start with is I
- 23:55will always figure it out. Even if it takes me longer than
- 23:59I think, even if I can't get to like I will always figure it
- 24:03out. It's like I will always figure
- 24:04it out, even if it takes me longer than I think.
- 24:07When I think that thought, I'm so proud of myself because I
- 24:10know that I'm never going to give up.
- 24:12Or maybe that's a thought too. Like I will never give up.
- 24:15I'm going to just keep going at this.
- 24:18I will keep going at it till I get there.
- 24:20Whatever the thoughts are that generate that feeling for you,
- 24:24or I'm so proud of everything that I've currently
- 24:26accomplished. And I know that I have more to
- 24:31accomplish and I know that I have more to give and I know
- 24:34there's more to write in my story.
- 24:36Like whatever those you want to just go on a rampage of all
- 24:39these beliefs and all these thoughts for you that help you
- 24:42generate the feeling of proud. I think like Proud too is
- 24:45closely related to gratitude and celebrating yourself.
- 24:48This is something that I've really struggled with over the
- 24:51years, especially like you get so used to hearing criticism and
- 24:55using criticism to get better and grow your leadership skills.
- 24:58But I've been really working on in this past year, just really
- 25:03celebrating and having gratitude for how far I've come, where I
- 25:07am currently and where I'm going.
- 25:09I feel like that has really helped me appreciate both where
- 25:13I'm at and then have the push to really continue on with some of
- 25:19these goals that I want to accomplish.
- 25:20So Step 4 is a big one. How can you generate this
- 25:23feeling and what are the beliefs and, and, and mindset and
- 25:27thoughts you have to about have about yourself that will help
- 25:30you generate that? I hope that this episode kind of
- 25:35helped you motivate you to set a goal, be specific about it, put
- 25:39in some big hairy audacious goals, move your timelines
- 25:42forward. And I want to offer for you join
