- 0:00Welcome back to another edition of the Justin Time Podcast.
- 0:03I'm your host, Justin. But let's get into this LSU
- 0:06Louisiana Tech game, shall we? Was not the prettiest of games.
- 0:10We did come off with a win. There was a lot of positives,
- 0:13but there were also a ton of negatives.
- 0:15And your team should be getting better in Week 2 as you move
- 0:18along. But Brian Kelly missed the memo
- 0:21and our offense. Digress, digress.
- 0:26No, it's not digress. Regressed.
- 0:29They just had no flow. I get it that we had key
- 0:33offensive lineman on our already young offensive line go down
- 0:38early. We lost our tight end, our star
- 0:40tight end, but your weapons are on the outside and you didn't
- 0:45use them for two games now you've yet to use our receivers.
- 0:49We need to be using our receivers.
- 0:51Our run game. With the way our offensive line
- 0:53is our run game, is it going to be anything spectacular?
- 0:57Our offensive line is hot and cold.
- 1:00They can't block. If we don't have a misdirection
- 1:03in or or two in thrown in. Our guys are getting overpowered
- 1:07by Louisiana Tech. They should never happened.
- 1:09Part of that is to me is coaching.
- 1:12Offensive line coach has been really good when he's had really
- 1:17good offensive lineman and really terrible when he needs to
- 1:20develop his offensive lineman. I don't know what to say.
- 1:22Nuss had 237 yards passing, 1 touchdown pass, was 26 to 41 and
- 1:30had one interception. Now the interception, it's not
- 1:35like he's threw it directly to in double triple coverage like
- 1:39he did past years. That one just took a bad bounce
- 1:44and landed right and the defender was in the right place
- 1:46at the right on the right time. We need to get more of our
- 1:49receiving game into the game plan.
- 1:53We need to give. We need to protect Nuss and give
- 1:55him more time to make a decision.
- 1:58But also Nuss needs to figure out he's got legs.
- 2:01He needs to move with the play breaks down.
- 2:04He needs to not give up on a play and take what they give him
- 2:08and run. There was at least three times
- 2:11where he could have got a first down with his legs and he just
- 2:15didn't, didn't move. He had -27 rushing yards and
- 2:19some of that was from sex. Offensive line was pathetic.
- 2:22They could not block. The interior of the offensive
- 2:24line was pathetic at half time going in the half.
- 2:29We had the ball with two minutes left and they literally,
- 2:34Louisiana Tech literally went straight through the middle.
- 2:36Our offensive line didn't block a soul.
- 2:38Sometimes when we ran, our offensive line didn't block a
- 2:41soul. Offensive line play needs to be
- 2:43better. You can't do anything with an
- 2:44offense that has the old line that can't block.
- 2:47We need to be better. We'll get better.
- 2:49Hopefully by the we will get better.
- 2:52It's early in the season. We have a young offensive line.
- 2:55We'll get there. Would I like us to get there
- 2:58faster? Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:01But we will get there and it will be fine.
- 3:03Hopefully everything will be fine.
- 3:06Let's get into some statistics. Harlan Berry had 6 carries for
- 3:1156 yards. He was responsible for 50.
- 3:16Sorry, a 43 yard long run. Xavion Thomas got involved. 6
- 3:20carries for 54 yards for 4848 was his longest yard, longest
- 3:27run. What really surprised me here is
- 3:30Kaden Durham 13 carries, 29 yards, one TD.
- 3:34His longest carry was 5 yards. And then really nobody else
- 3:40really contributed more than a yard our receiving Berrien.
- 3:43Berrien Brown LED with eight receptions for 94 yards and 19
- 3:48yard long, and Anderson 8 receptions, 73 yards, 23 yard,
- 3:5723 yard long. Davian Thomas had four for 35.
- 4:01His longest reception, his longest run after the catch, was
- 4:0515. Nick Anderson had three for 17
- 4:08yards and a touchdown. His longest was 7 yards.
- 4:13Caden Durham 2 receptions for 10 yards.
- 4:17His longest was 7 and sharp one reception for 8 yards and his
- 4:23longest was 8 yards for a total of 237.
- 4:27Now here's where it gets good because the defense was
- 4:29outstanding once again. I've been really impressed by
- 4:32the defense. I think in the coming games we
- 4:36win the game solely because of the defense.
- 4:39W Week's 10 total tackles Devon Devon Keys 9 total tackles,
- 4:45Cooley 5 tackles, Highburn 4 tackles, Policy 30, Witweeks 3.
- 4:53And it just goes on and on for three.
- 4:55One that I need, I need to see him get more into these games
- 4:59and make an impact is Harold Perkins.
- 5:02He only had two tackles, but he was all over the field.
- 5:05He's going to be between him and the Weeks brothers.
- 5:09That's our leadership on defense.
- 5:11Our defense solely depends on Wit Weeks, W Weeks and Harold
- 5:16Perkins. There's no other person.
- 5:18That's just our just how it goes special teams.
- 5:22I give AB, we have one kick return for 42 yards.
- 5:25That's nice. We had two punt returns for 24
- 5:29yards total. I mean, punting most of that.
- 5:32That punter for Tech was really good.
- 5:35He punted 9 times for 346 yards and most of them had to be a
- 5:42fair catch. Damian Ramos needs to be better.
- 5:44Part of that is he missed one, but part of that is our genius
- 5:48head coach decided to ice his own kicker and call a time out
- 5:52before he kicked the first one. The only one he missed of the
- 5:54night. So he was 3 for four.
- 5:57But after he came up limping on that first, a second field goal
- 6:04to Clemson, he'd been having me worried.
- 6:06He's a little shaky now. From where I sit, it totally
- 6:10look like he made the first one. It's just angles.
- 6:12Every time he misses one on that side, I'm always like, unless it
- 6:15rolls in, I'm always like, he made that.
- 6:19It's just angles. I can't, I don't have a good
- 6:21angle on that on that goal post from where I sit, I just don't
- 6:25have a good angle. Overall, I guess team averages
- 6:27AB, we need to get on more on our offense.
- 6:32We need to offensive coordinator needs to Joe Sloan needs to get
- 6:36our receivers, our receivers in start taking more shots down the
- 6:41field. That's our strength.
- 6:44Running back is not our strength.
- 6:45Half of these guys that got reset, that got big yardage in
- 6:49the and contributed in the run game or receivers, we need to
- 6:53get those guys more out on the outside and let them do they
- 6:55think Louisiana Tech's defense was better than I expected, but
- 7:00still nothing to write home about.
- 7:02I mean, we just have to be better.
- 7:05We just really have to be better.
- 7:06We have to get more of our receivers involved.
- 7:09We need to throw the ball down the field more, protect the
- 7:12quarterback more. When we do run, a little
- 7:15blocking from the offensive line would be nice.
- 7:18I know they're young guys and they're trying their best, but
- 7:21at least take up space and don't get pushed back.
- 7:23Stop standing straight up on your first.
- 7:26Your first move shouldn't be up, it should be out.
- 7:28And even in pass blocking, it should just be low and back.
- 7:33We need to do a better job. Like I said, the defense had a
- 7:36nearly perfect game. I'm really pleased with the way
- 7:39that Blake Baker has got this team, this defense going now.
- 7:45It's made leaps and bounds from you from year to year with him.
- 7:51I get last year they were talking about it during the
- 7:53first game. Last year they said he just
- 7:56didn't have the death that he wanted to run the kind of
- 7:59defense that he wanted to. But this year he's got it and it
- 8:01shows and the defense looks spectacular.
- 8:03But that game is over with and we're moving on to the Florida
- 8:08Gators, who lost a tough one in at home against the South
- 8:14Florida team who's always been, who's always in the last couple
- 8:18years given SEC teams to run for their money.
- 8:22So let's just get into this. I mean, offensively for Florida,
- 8:26it was nothing. It was kind of like LSU was
- 8:28nothing special. There was only one touchdown
- 8:31scored in this game. South Florida beat them off of
- 8:34field goals. Brown for South Florida's
- 8:39yardage was 263 yards. Take that back, they did have a
- 8:43they 2 touchdowns scored in this game.
- 8:45Look at that, I was looking at it wrong.
- 8:47Yep, they had two touchdown passes thrown in this game.
- 8:50Other than that it was straight off of field goals each
- 8:53quarterback had. Wolf Brown didn't have an
- 8:55interception. What else do we have?
- 8:59That rushing was really strong for Florida.
- 9:01Again, 133 yards. South Florida's rushing was 128.
- 9:07Receiving for Florida was 222 with 1 touchdown for South
- 9:14Florida, receiving looks like 263 yards.
- 9:17So looks like defensive backfield is going to be where
- 9:20LSU can get the edge on Florida. Florida's defense.
- 9:25But we have to be able to protect the quarterback.
- 9:28You know, we have to be able to protect the quarterback.
- 9:32If we can protect us even just a little bit and give him time to
- 9:35let a play develop and hit a receiver down the field, we can
- 9:40get this ball going. We can get this game going and
- 9:44we can get it going. Because I really think this is
- 9:47going to come down to a defensive battle.
- 9:49It's going to be whose defense is on the field for less of the
- 9:53time and who gets more. 3 and outs causes turnovers.
- 9:58And I can see LSU winning this game.
- 10:00Honestly. I can see LSU getting it winning
- 10:01this game pretty big. But I can also see this game
- 10:04coming down to a field goal at the end of the game.
- 10:06It's all going to be who's offense shows up more.
- 10:09Both offenses didn't look like any.
- 10:11They look like trash compared to their first weeks.
- 10:16You know, both offenses didn't look good.
- 10:18They didn't have good games. They're both of these teams
- 10:20Offenses are going to be looked to bounce back.
- 10:21Florida's defense played well enough to keep them to give them
- 10:27to have them have a lead at the end of that game, but they gave
- 10:33up a field goal. You know, looks to me like the
- 10:38weakness is through the air, so if we can get the ball up
- 10:41instead of trying to run it every 5 minutes, we'll be fine.
- 10:44I do think this is going to be a deep, purely defensive game.
- 10:47So if you like high-powered offenses, this a game probably
- 10:50ain't going to be any for you. I don't think there's going to
- 10:52be a lot of points scored and I just I really think this is
- 10:55going to be a defensive game. I think it's going to come down
- 10:57and I think LSU is going to win it by a touchdown or three
- 10:59points. We're going to win it by
- 11:01touchdown or field goal. It's going to be a close one.
- 11:04It's going to be a hard fought when it's going to be a fun one,
- 11:07but not if you're into if you're in the offense, you're not going
- 11:10to like this game. Now the Next up on LSU schedule
- 11:13because why not just keep going is Southeastern.
- 11:18Southeastern played Murray State, they got blown out but
- 11:20shut out by Tech in the first the opener down in Ruston 24 to
- 11:26nothing, but they got it. They bounced back and got a huge
- 11:30win against Murray State 45 to 24.
- 11:32Was it anything special or was it just Murray State not being a
- 11:36tough team? They still had one pick.
- 11:39They threw one touchdown pass between the two quarterbacks.
- 11:44They went 24 for 33 between the two with 218 yards.
- 11:48Nothing too special rushing wise.
- 11:50I mean, they did rush for 262 yards.
- 11:54But Murray State's defense probably is not all that, you
- 11:57know, receiving. They had 218.
- 12:00I think our guys can lock that down.
- 12:02It should be another 7 point game when we get there or
- 12:05another shot out. Yeah, that's all I'm going to
- 12:07say about Southeastern. I mean there's that.
- 12:10It's not like they have played anybody.
- 12:11I can't see anything special coming from them.
- 12:14So we're going to move on because Ole Miss in Kentucky,
- 12:18that was a close game and I feel like it was a good game.
- 12:22So we will talk about Ole Miss, LSUA little bit.
- 12:26Well, we'll talk about Ole Miss in Kentucky, not LSU and Ole
- 12:29Miss because I'm hoping that we will be, you know, undefeated
- 12:36when we get there. We have the potential to be
- 12:38undefeated when we get there. We just have one big obstacle in
- 12:41Florida. Florida's always a hard fought
- 12:44game because anytime you walk a dead cat skeleton after a team's
- 12:49mascot dies, that's just peer hatred for that other team.
- 12:54And that's how it was. But let's see Ole Miss Ole Miss
- 12:57has Arkansas this weekend, so we'll see what they do.
- 13:01But this Kentucky game at Kentucky, they won Ole Miss.
- 13:06At Kentucky game, Ole Miss won 30 to 23.
- 13:11Yeah, 30 to 23. There was a lot of back and
- 13:13forth, you know, a lot of back and forth.
- 13:15My iPad isn't giving me anything at the moment, so give me one
- 13:19second. But just looking in when I watch
- 13:22this game, it just the few parts that I watched was, you know, it
- 13:27was hard fought. They each took blows, They came
- 13:29back and forth, back and forth. You know, Kentucky had a few
- 13:32good plays, made a few good plays.
- 13:34Ole Miss made a few good plays. Ole Miss made one, made a couple
- 13:39more good plays than Kentucky did, especially through the air.
- 13:43They had two touchdowns, 235 yards for 22 interceptions.
- 13:47So never mind. They didn't, I read that wrong.
- 13:51They didn't have a great game through the air.
- 13:54They had two picks 3rd to 24 with 235 yards.
- 14:00They rushed for 2/20 though which is a big thing.
- 14:02They had three touchdowns on the ground.
- 14:05This game was just back and forth.
- 14:07Both teams played clean ish football except for Ole misses 2
- 14:12picks. You know Ole misses in the same
- 14:14point as us with kicking wise. There were three for four field
- 14:19goal. Honestly, I think the biggest
- 14:21thing for LSU is going on the road at Ole Miss.
- 14:24It's always been good games in the last couple of years.
- 14:28I think if Brian Kelly can get this team going, you know it'll
- 14:31be great. I think it's a good thing when
- 14:33we get into October, we take a break before South Carolina
- 14:39comes to us. You know, I just think it's
- 14:41going to be one of those games when we get to Ole Miss, let's
- 14:45not look too far ahead. But when we get to Ole Miss, I
- 14:47think it's just going to be one of those hard fought games like
- 14:50it always is. I have a feeling we can come out
- 14:54of it because our defense is a lot, lot better than it used to
- 14:57be in the years, past years. Alabama made a state comeback
- 15:00statement beating ULM 66 to nothing but UL.
- 15:06Ms. Hunter made an amazing quote, had an Oklahoma come out
- 15:11and beat Michigan. Not surprised there at all
- 15:15because it was at Oklahoma and I think Michigan's a joke.
- 15:18I take that back. Michigan's a good football team.
- 15:20I think Oklahoma is just showing out.
- 15:24And especially what worries me is even when Oklahoma was
- 15:27terrible last year, they beat the brakes off Alabama at the
- 15:30end of the season. So they progressively got
- 15:33better. They had the potential to get
- 15:36progressively better this year. We'll just have to wait and see
- 15:40where it goes. But let's end this with, you
- 15:43know, LSU was undefeated still. So they had to work hard for
- 15:49they had to work for that because offense, it just wasn't
- 15:52clicking, you know, just didn't click for him on Saturday.
- 15:57They had to work for it. But All in all, a wins a win.
- 16:02When we look at back at this later on, we're not going to be
- 16:05saying, oh, well, we didn't score too much.
- 16:07You know, if we win a national championship and they play like
- 16:09they are capable of doing and our offense, bottom line is
- 16:13offensive coordinator needs to get a little more creative with
- 16:16his play calling. Not don't let me take a breath.
- 16:20Offensive coordinator needs to be more creative with the play
- 16:22calling. He doesn't have to light the
- 16:24world on fire, but just make it to where everybody in the
- 16:29stadium doesn't know exactly what you're doing.
- 16:32And that's the part where my Airpods go in and out and
- 16:36connect to a different thing. So with that being said, this
- 16:40has been another edition of the Just in Time podcast.
- 16:43I hope you enjoyed it. Please like and subscribe and
- 16:45whatever you do, have a good day, a good night, a good
- 16:48morning. Whatever you have, just make it
- 16:50a good one. Thank you.
