- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Today, I'm chatting with Grace Strachan.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Grace is a transplanted Canadian living in the center of the U.S., After working in corporate America after her husband passed away suddenly, she realized that she owned her life and she needed to take it back.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: She wanted to help people and businesses to make a better life.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: So she took a part-time gig and made it her career.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Grace, so I'm so glad to have you here.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: So I want to start with you.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: You took a part-time gig and you made it your career.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: What, what is that?
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Tell us what that gig was.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Well, actually it was something that I was using for my full-time career.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: I had a girlfriend introduced me to, um, at that time it was called send out cards and now it's called promptings with the mechanism behind, um, Send out cards is the mechanism behind being able to act on your prompting.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: And I actually use that with my full-time job.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: So I was introduced to it because a girlfriend of mine said, this is something I think you can use for your business because my mother always taught me to send thank you cards.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: And I wrote them, I hand wrote them religiously and I had become lazy.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: I have to be honest.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: When I moved from Canada to the United States, I had so many people to send Christmas cards and cards to.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: And then I would forget my thank you cards.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, just so many things were happening in my life that I got lazy.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: And I think my girlfriend knew.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: And so she introduced me to send out cards where I could literally sit at a computer, put my own font in, put my own signatures in and write up a card and they would print stuff and mail it for me.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: And it was brilliant.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: It was like a no brainer to me because I no longer had an excuse that I didn't have the time.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: I didn't have the cards.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: I didn't have the stamps.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, everything was done for me.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: And so I signed up immediately and I signed up as a, at that time they called it an affiliate because I thought, Why not?
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Everybody needs this.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: But I didn't do anything with it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: All I did was use it.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: And about I don't even know how many months later, I got a check in the mail and I went.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: What's this?
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: I phoned the girl that signed me up and I said, I got a check in the mail.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: What's this?
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: And she said, well, yeah, Grace, are you sharing with people?
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: I said, well, no.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Somebody will say, well, hey, how do you do those cards?
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: And I send them my website.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: She said, what?
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: And I said, well, I got a full time job.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: I'm traveling.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm traveling a lot and I don't have time to do this.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: So I had somebody literally sign up because they asked me how I did it.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, my goodness.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: That's like the ideal, that's the idea, like the ideal multi-level marketing,
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: right?
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: And I never promoted it, never pushed it, never promoted it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: And actually just before I made it a full-time gig, I had something happen that kind of clicked in my brain.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: And that was, I had a designer who had, because I dealt with designers and architects who had had her 25th anniversary with the company.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: And, you know, you get that on LinkedIn and nobody does anything with it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: And so I sent her a happy anniversary card and nowhere on the card said who I worked because to me, I mean, I'd known her for 25 years.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: So it was like between her and I.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: And so I sent her the card and she sent me a phone or she phoned me laughing because her boss came up to her computer and they were working on a job and he looked over and he said, I thought your anniversary was in the fall.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: And she's giggled and handed him the card and he looked at it and went, Oh, happy anniversary.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Who's grace.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: Um, so she said, Oh, he's he, he was all embarrassed about anyway.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: He brought in a cake at lunch.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Happy 25th anniversary.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Trying to make up for it.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: And I said to her, I said, whoa, I didn't mean to insult him.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, that was not the idea behind the card.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: I said, and anyway, he shouldn't be insulted.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: She said, why?
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: I said, that's not his job.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: I said, you've got HR, don't you?
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: She said, well, yeah, we have two people in HR.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: I said, well, that's their job.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: To remind him.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: Of people's anniversary and 25 years is a big anniversary.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: And that this guy probably wasn't there 25 years before.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Oh, he was the owner.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, he was the owner of the company.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: But I mean, how can he remember?
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: You've got all anyway.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: So she went and told him what I had said.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: And that was the first account I set up.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Because he said to the HR, you get ahold of her now.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: That's a great idea.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: And so is that, that's kind of what your job is now then?
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: So I work, this is what I tell people.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: You only have to stay in touch with the people you want to keep.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: I help you keep them.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: And I don't care if that's employees or clients.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: We spend our entire lives going out and networking.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, we need to build our business.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: We need to build our relationships.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: We need to meet new people.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: What about the people that got us there?
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: You've got an account that has given you a beautiful order or a specification, whatever your job is.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: And did you say thank you?
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Bet you you didn't.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: Or if you did, you might have sent a text, right?
- 8:09UNKNOWN: Right?
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: But if you stay in touch with them, you know, you're not just top of mind, but you're also memorable.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: So when they think of somebody, a coach, they think of a I'm the gratitude whisperer.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: They think of the gratitude whisperer.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: They think, wow, she makes me feel so good.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: She always remembers my birthday.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: She always remembers the holidays.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: She remembers my work anniversary because guess what?
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: LinkedIn posts it for you.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: So you don't even have to be brilliant.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Isn't that the truth though, right?
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Like you don't have to remember anything because we have computers now.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: And our contact manager, once you put a birthday in the system, it automatically sends you an email 21 days before their birthday and says, hey, Tina's birthday is coming up.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Just thought I'd remind you.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: So then you can get a card out to them or, you know, whatever you want to do.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: And the same with work anniversaries or anniversaries of any kind.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: I sell businesses to set an anniversary date of the first time you ever had an order from.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, I like that.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: You send them a card once a year ago.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Can you believe it's been four years?
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Can you believe it's been?
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: whatever.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: And realtors love that because a realtor, I mean, it, you know, can you believe that it's been a whole 10 years since you moved?
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: You've been staying in touch with that person for 10 years.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: I can guarantee you if they're going to move or if their neighbor moves or their brother moves or their sister moves, they're going to, they're going to remember you as a realtor, aren't they?
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: That is so true.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: That helps keep the relationship strong.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, I like that.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: That's a really good one.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: So that's what I do.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: So that's your full-time career.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: And so, yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: So you just put in, like you have a computer system that you put in the dates, you fill it in once and then you tell it how often you want to send a card or a note of some kind.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a, that's great.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: You can, you can do it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: There's many ways.
- 10:29SPEAKER_03: There's many ways you can set a heartfelt card.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: So in other words, you can send a card.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: I love taking selfies.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: And then putting the selfie on the front of the card and going, it was so nice meeting you.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Because guess what?
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: My branding's on the back of the card so they remember me.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: My picture is with you on the front of the card so you remember what I look like.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: And then I do some message on the inside.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's not just a selfie that someone decided to take and probably never look at again.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: And my card is people keep.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: And it shows that I didn't just take the selfie to take it, right?
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Like I took it because I care.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, I like that.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: I really like that.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: And we don't say thank you enough,
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Tina.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: You're absolutely right.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Like we don't.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: And like I say thank you to everybody I talk to.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: And sometimes I get that look like, you know, why, why?
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, well, I'm not saying I'm not apologizing.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: You know, like there's a lot of Canadians that I'm sorry for everything.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: But you know what?
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: That's a good thing.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Well, it can be.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: But I mean, why are you apologizing if you haven't done anything wrong?
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: But we need to replace that sorry for thank you.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: And I'm grateful for you.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: And you did earlier.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: You said that you call yourself the gratitude person.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: whisperer.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: You need to explain that a little bit more.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Well, I have been with prompting send out cards for almost 14 years total.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: I have been with them full time now for, um, six and a bit years because my husband passed away seven years and it took me a while to quit my job and blah, blah, blah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: So, um, And I had somebody say to me one time, oh, you're like a gratitude whisperer.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: And it stuck in my head and I went, hmm, okay.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: And it's kind of funny because it evolved.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: And I said one time, I'm a gratitude whisperer.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: And somebody said to me, that's like the horse whisperer.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: And you tell us little stories that click in our minds.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: And I went, yes.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: And so as soon as somebody said that, I went, it's mine.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: And so you tell little stories about that person or you just tell little stories.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: I tell gratitude
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: stories.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Like little gratitude stories.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: You need to share one with us right now.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: This is my favorite.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: I had a, well, first thing you should know, every morning when I get up, the first thing I do is whoever comes to my mind is going to get a card.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: And that is a prompting, okay?
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: That's a God tap, that's whatever your belief is, the universe, whatever talking to you.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: And the reason that person came to your mind was because you either need to reach out to them or they need to hear from you.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: That's just simple.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: So what I do is I get, and then I go on Facebook, I have to be honest.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: And I stalk them because they've come to my mind for a reason, but there might be another reason.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: So I go on Facebook and it's amazing to me how many times a new, something has happened.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: It might be good, might be bad.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: It might be, you know, whatever.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: And then I'll take a picture and I'll put it on a card and I send it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: I'm done.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: So I did this one day.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: This was a few years ago and it was an old boss of mine.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: He came to my mind.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: I thought, I haven't thought of Tom in a while.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Anyway, so I went, of course he's not on Facebook.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: So I just sent him a card and I realized that I had never told him what a mentor he had been to me.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Probably one of the best bosses I ever had.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: And I had him for 13 years and I just loved the man.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Anyway, so I sent him a card and I don't even remember what I said.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: I just sent it.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: And I don't remember when you do heartfelt, you just say what you say and you send it and you forget about it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Well, two weeks later, I'm in St.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Louis driving down the street.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: And I look down and my phone goes off and it's Tom.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: And I went, oh, wow.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: And I totally forgot about the car.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: And he said, hey, gracious.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: That's what he always called me.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: And he said, and I said, Tom, it's so great to hear your voice.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: He said, so great to hear yours, too.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: He said, anyway, we just got back from vacation.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: We were visiting the girls and their daughters live in Chicago.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: East Coast.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: We just got back from the East Coast.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: And he said, and their daughter that lives close to them brought the mail.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: And he said, and Joe, that's his wife, said, oh, there's a card here from Grace.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: And Tom said, I hope it's not bad news.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Well, Tina, I'm driving while I'm talking to him.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: I had to pull over.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: My heart went into my throat.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: I pulled over and I was almost in tears.
- 15:55SPEAKER_03: And I said, hmm, okay.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: I didn't say anything to him.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: I just thought, okay.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: And he said, so anyway, Grace, he said, it was fabulous.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: We sat down together, opened the card, read it.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: We laughed, we cried.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: And now I'm making this phone call.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: You made my day.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: I felt so wonderful.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: And he went on and on and on.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: It was fabulous.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: And we talked for a while, got off the phone.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: And you know, Tina, the one thing that stuck in my head was, I hope it's not bad news.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: And I swore then and there, never would anybody ever receive a card from me and have that feeling that I hope it's not bad news.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: That's my favorite story.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is super, like, you know, really, I mean, in today's day, I'm thinking bad news travels.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, we all know bad news travels fast, but not in mail.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Not in the snail mail.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Like we're getting it.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, unfortunately, now with social media, that's where we're getting a lot of our bad news.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: So how do you.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: OK, so that's great.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, and you came like you.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: came out of that conversation, you know, that's never going to happen again.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: How do you know that that's not happening now when you send your cards?
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Because I send enough of them and I'm going to be very honest with you.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: I, I don't over send cards, but cards that I send, if somebody has a death in the family, I'll send them a sympathy card, but I also celebrate their life as well.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: So when I, You know, I celebrate their birthday.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: I celebrate the holidays.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: They may be my person that I get up and it's a card of gratitude.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: So when somebody I know passes away, do you know the first place I go?
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: My contact manager.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: And I pop them up and I look through my history.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: And if I have sent quite a few cards to them over the years, I feel that I have, I've touched them because one thing that makes me sad and that reaction of, I hope it's not bad news is I have family members that the only time I hear from them is I get a phone call when somebody has passed away.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: And, and I, and that hit me really hard.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: Because I really, I mean, literally, I have a couple people that I won't pick up the phone.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Because I'm afraid it's going to be bad news.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: And I don't want anybody ever having that feeling about me.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: No, I don't blame you.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Because I mean, I know myself, I'm really, really, really bad at reaching out.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: But I think of everybody, like you said, like I like that whole, whoever I think of first in the day is going to get a card from me.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: I love that because I think of all the people that I grew up with.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: My cousins, my friends, like, you know, family, friends, like I think of everyone often.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: I even dream about people that I haven't seen for over 20 years.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: And so I like that idea of, you know, like, I'm just thinking of you.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Like, do you remember, you know, like bringing up a story, like a past story?
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Do you remember when we were all together at so-and-so's house?
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Well, that, you know, I had I thought of that yesterday or whatever.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Like, and I'm sure that's what you're doing.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Like, that's what you're saying in your cards is.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: I thought about you.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: Hope you're doing well.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: I was remembering a story from 25 years ago.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: I can't believe I can say that right now.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: But
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: you do.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: And it's very, very true.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Another great story was I have a friend that came to my mind one day.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: And again, you think, why did that person come to my mind?
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: And I went on Facebook.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: not on facebook a lot there wasn't anything so i just said and i think i wrote something like you cannot be everything to everyone or i had some kind of a meme that i had seen and i just felt that was perfect and i sent it didn't think again anything of it and this is when my husband was still alive and we went out every friday night we had date night and we're in the restaurant And my cell phone starts vibrating, and I look down, and I go, oh.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: So I said, it was my girlfriend.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: And my husband said, do you want to call her back?
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: And I said, no, no.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: She knows it's Friday night.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: It's state night.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: I'll call her back.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: I'll call her when we're done.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: And I said, oh, she left a voice message.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: I'll catch it later.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: So as soon as we got home, I opened up my voice messages.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: And she's like...
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: crying and I'm thinking oh no what is going on so finally she calmed down in the call or in the voice message and she said oh I'm I'm leaving for the weekend you've made my day thank you for the card blah blah blah okay so I really didn't think a lot of it and I knew she was going away for the weekend and on the on the Monday when she got back I called her and I said did you have a good weekend and I said I got your I got your mess and I started giggling I said I got your message she said oh Oh, and she almost started crying again.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: And I went, what?
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: And she said, I had had one of the worst days of my life on Friday.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: She said, it was just, she said, I was ready to just wring somebody's neck.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: I was ready to cancel the weekend.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: I just had it with my husband.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: I'd had it with people.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: I just had it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: And she said, and I was supposed to be getting ready for us to leave on Friday night.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: And she said, and I thought, She said, I'm going to go out and get the mail.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: Well, she's got a long walkway, right?
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: So she goes out and she gets the mail.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: And the only thing in the mailbox was my card.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: So she sees this card.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: She goes, huh?
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: You know, thinking that wise grace sent me a card, right?
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: And as she's coming back up, she opens it up and she sat down on the front stoop and she started crying because all I put in it was something.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: I think the meme said, you can't be everything to everyone, right?
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: but just remember how much you mean to me or something like that.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: It was something really simple.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: And I really didn't say a lot, but she just needed to hear that because she had been trying to be everything to everyone and impatient and dah, dah, dah, you know, whatever.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: And she said, she said, I cried and cried.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: She said, that's when I left that message for you.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: She said, and I ran around real quick to get ready to go for the weekend because she said, and she said, Grace, I had one of the best weekends I've ever had.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think, you know, it's so nice when somebody recognizes you when you're not looking for recognition, right?
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: Like when you're like, it's just out of the blue.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: It's like, wow, it's almost like, like you were watching over her knowing she was struggling, even though you had no idea, right?
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: And so that just makes it that much more special.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: That's why the promptings, you know, people say birthday cards, right?
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: As an example.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: Or holiday cards.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, but they have to arrive on their birthday.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: No, they arrive exactly when they need to arrive.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: What is worse than a belated birthday card?
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Not sending one.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:44UNKNOWN: Yeah.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: It really doesn't matter.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: And you know what?
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: On their birthday, they probably are getting a whole bunch of, you know, maybe not a lot of cards, but a lot of good cheer and cake and blah, blah, blah.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: And maybe that two days later, when they've kind of come down from their birthday, or maybe they've realized how old they've just become or whatever, and they're feeling a little down, that card is exactly what they needed.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: That's so sweet.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: And so you do this for like people like to build relationships within their personal life, but you also do it for businesses.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: How does it work with a business?
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Like if, like, would it have to be like the business owner that you would want to talk with?
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: You
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: know, it completely depends.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: I have a lot of people that have their own account and then send for business and I have salespeople that will have their own account, but also send for business.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Like all the years that I worked, my company never paid for mine.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: I paid for my own.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: And when I quit, actually, they said, oh, you know, I understand that you want to quit.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: And, you know, but, you know, going from, you know, you're such a hard worker and you put all your all into everything.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: And for you to go from that to nothing because they thought I was retiring.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: And I said, well, who said I was retiring?
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: And our controller said, oh, are you going to do that card thing full time?
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: And the owner went, what card thing?
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: And he said, well, haven't you been getting cards from Grace?
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: And he goes, well, yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: Are you kidding me?
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: I said, no, that's what he said.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Well, we should be doing that.
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: I went, tried to tell you that.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: you know, years ago, but you know, anyway.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Sometimes you can't hit them with a brick and get through to them.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah,
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: I get it.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: But anyway, so, but you know, so it depends on the business.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: A lot of the time, you know, HR, you know, a lot of the time they'll start with in their, in their own department because you know how much it costs to hire new people.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: It's expensive, but to keep the people and if you, I mean, I don't have the statistics in front of me, but to onboard somebody costs so much money to keep someone just by making them feel like they're special and that they're appreciated.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: People do not quit because of wage.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: A lot of the time they quit because they don't feel that they're appreciated.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: they're appreciated there, that their work is appreciated.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Anything is appreciated.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: I remember, I remember an article that said that like, it's not always just about the money.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Like I'll stay as long as you can tell me that you really appreciate what I'm doing for you.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: So that's why HR.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: And so that's where this would come in handy because they would send a card to their home and Right.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: And probably they would get it after a shitty
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: date.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: And the other thing, too, is with businesses, salespeople, we are in we are a nation and not just the US, but Canada.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: We're a world right now of transact transactional sales.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: Everything is hit and miss done.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: I made four major purchases.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: in the last two years, four.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: And I mean, we're talking major, big purchases, okay?
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: Two people out of the people that I dealt with knew what I did for a living.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: Actually, one of them, I sent them a thank you card for his quote.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I never got a thank you text, thank you email, follow-up.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: I never even got, were you happy with the product?
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: One of them, it took...
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: four months for them to finish the project.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: And I never even heard from the salesman to find out if it got worked out.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Nothing.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Except for one.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: And it was three months after the sale.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: And he asked me if I would do a Google review.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: Huh.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: I did not do a Google review.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: I guess not.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: But I never even got an acknowledgment And those were four major purchases.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: And like I said, two of them knew what I did for a living.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: The other two did not.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: And I'm thinking to myself, you think I'm going to refer them?
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: And those are like, those are, I mean, big purchases.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: We're looking at, you know, every household, right?
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Every household at some point has to do this.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: Do you want one more good story?
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: I love stories.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: So yes.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: This is probably one of the best.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: This is somebody that I know in our industry.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: And he happens to live up in the mountain.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: So he's not close to the city.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: So if anything major ever happens, you've got trip charges.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: So any contractor has to come.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Well, guess what?
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: He had a sewer backup.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: And it happened to be on Labor Day weekend.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: So, of course, he's got a real mess in his basement.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: And it's Labor Day.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: So he knows it's going to cost him a fortune because he's got a trip charge, plus it's a long weekend.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: So he's like, so he gets online and he needs to find somebody to come and clean up the mess and a plumber to fix the problem.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: So he finally gets it all done.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: And it's like, you know, three thousand dollars by the time it's all said and done.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: But now he's got a clean basement and everything's done.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: So he's sitting down after the weekend and he's thinking to himself, hmm, interesting.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: A year ago, I had one of my pipes burst, and I had to hire somebody to come and clean up the water.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Now, it was a different water situation.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Anyway, but clean up the water and a plumber.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Okay?
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: Now, think about this.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: If those people had sent a thank you card or some kind of follow-up from a year before, he wouldn't have had to get on his computer or his phone and find somebody to come, he would have called them.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: So$3,000,$1,500 a piece.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: So you figure that as a contractor, if they had one of those a month, one of those a month, say even$1,000, be$12,000 a year they've lost in business.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: Just by sending like a simple thank you or acknowledgement of some kind.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Wow, when you look at it like that, it seems crazy, doesn't it?
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Because I mean, all those companies have return clients.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: for whatever reason, right?
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: But this is one reason why you would have that, right?
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: If you could show just the simple appreciation that, you know, like, thank you so much for having me, you know, like having me help you or you needing me or whatever the case may be.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: My chiropractor signed up and sent me a card, a thank you card, and put their picture on the front.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: And that sits on my refrigerator.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: And I have given out their information twice because I've had people over and they go, oh, I'm looking for a new chiropractor.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: Hold on.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: Take a picture of this.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: So that's, I mean, that's another thing, right?
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, we like, do you remember that commercial?
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: When you like your product, you tell 10 people.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: And if they like it, they tell 10 people.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: And I remember the TV commercial, like all the heads got smaller and the screen just filled up with the same head.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: And I thought that's so true, right?
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Like if I don't like what, but I think the statistics now are like, if you like something, you might tell two or three people.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: If you don't like something, you're going to tell 10 people, right?
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: That's exactly what
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: it is.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: That's so cool.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: And the other thing too, is we forget that, Everybody needs to feed their family.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Everybody needs to feed their family.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: So it doesn't matter if it's small business, big business, it doesn't matter.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: So even if, and I'll send a thank you card to somebody that's served me well in a restaurant.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: And sometimes if I get really good service, I'll get the manager's name and I'll do a selfie and I'll send a card to the manager with a gift And say, you know, this server was fabulous.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: I will be back again and I will refer this restaurant.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's so awesome.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: That's better than a tip.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: You don't do the work.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: Like you type it into your computer and then there's like a, like a, like it obviously goes to another base where they actually print the card.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: So I like, like this, we are going to try after.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Oh, you know, it is.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: And we're in Salt Lake city and literally our office is here and the printing is right in the same building.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: And the beauty is if you've got somebody that has compliance issues or whatever, they own that contact manager, that CRM is theirs, right?
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: They have their own password.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: They have their own username.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: They own everything in that system.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: And the only thing that we see, like you can put in their phone number, their email, their birthday, whatever you want in the CRM.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: The only thing that we see is their name, address, and where it's being shipped to.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Wow, I love that.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: So it keeps everything compliant.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Cause you own that.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: And we also done something that is like above, above.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: I just love Cody who owns the company because he just, he thinks outside the box all the time.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: He's done two things in the last year that I've just been so excited about.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: And that is most businesses don't have time to do this.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: That's going to be their biggest complaint.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm going to sign up and then I'm not going to do it.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: So what we've got is we've got what we call gratitude specialists.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: And they are literally, I don't want to call them virtual assistants because a virtual assistant, you have to train.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Ours are already trained.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: That's their specialty.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: All they do is cards.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: So you can hire with our packages.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: You can hire them for a couple hours.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: three, four hours, depending on how much you need them.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: They'll download all your contacts for you, put them in groups, and then help you set up campaigns that get sent out through the year, help you put your branding on the back, help you do everything.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: So then it's just a matter of you keeping up with, oh, guess there's a birthday.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, you can send all the birthdays for the month.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, June, here are all my June birthdays.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: Click, send.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: And they're all personalized.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: So that's the one thing that we did.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: The second thing we did is, this is like, has blown my mind.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: We have a daily gratitude journal.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Now, I don't know if you do journaling.
- 35:55SPEAKER_03: I try.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: I have never been a journal.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: I've never been able to write down stuff.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: I just haven't.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: Anyway, this is probably the most unbelievable thing for me because I start my day sending that gratitude card but i start my day in what i'm grateful for yeah and this oops there we go this is it on each page and this is what they call an energy chart So you get up in the morning.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: Are you below the are you below the line or are you above the line?
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, and you teach yourself.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: And a lot of the time you're below the line because you haven't had a good night's sleep.
- 36:38SPEAKER_03: You maybe have a nightmare or somebody's woken you up in the too early or whatever.
- 36:42SPEAKER_03: There's a reason.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: And so you get yourself above.
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm going to tell you, you send that card of gratitude.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: You're above the line immediately.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's so true.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's so true.
- 36:53SPEAKER_03: Sharing
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: your life, sharing your love.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: So you write in here and then we have a core book.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: And the core book is this is for a whole year.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: This is quarterly.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: So there's four of these.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: This core book gets you to work on your I am statements, your prosperity statements.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: And then there's journaling in the back of the book.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: So the great thing about this, every day, I've actually worked very hard.
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: I've gone to a three-day mastermind that Cody's done up.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: It's called Prompting to Prosperity.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: And I've literally taken my I am statements and I now have a core statement.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: My prosperity, I have a core statement.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: My abundance, I have a core statement.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: So every day, what I say every morning when I get up is I embrace the energy of abundance.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: My life is a blessing.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: I am the gratitude whisperer.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, that sounds so awesome.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: And that brings me back to my core every day.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: And if I've had a bad day and I'm just trying to get above the line, I'll go in and I'll read all my I am statements that I've put in the front of the book.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: That's really awesome because you can't stay in that, you know, that sad, depressed state.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: mode or state if you're, you know, like that will pull you out.
- 38:25SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love it.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: You know, I don't want to run out of time.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: So I want to ask you about you.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Last time I spoke with you, you were writing a book and it was coming out in 2025.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: And I think you were calling it Motherisms of Matriarchs.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: I actually have,
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: I've changed it.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: It's called Motherisms of Matriarchs.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: And the reason I changed it was I had a dream.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: I think my mother came to me in my dream.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: And I saw MOM on the cover.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: And my reaction when I woke up was, okay, mom, I know it's a tribute to you, but don't you think that's just a little, you know, a little bit of ego, maybe back that away a bit.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: But I realized that what it was, was that The name had to say mum.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: So that's why motherisms of matriarchs or mum for short.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: So, okay.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: So explain to me again what that means.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Like what's motherisms?
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: When my husband passed away, I was going through a really hard time because I, you know, you know, I'm from Canada.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: I was living down here all by myself.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: Of course, I had all my American friends, but I didn't have any family here.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: And I kept hearing my mother's voice in my ear.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: And every time something would happen, something that she had kind of taught me would come to my brain.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: And I got through it.
- 40:05SPEAKER_03: And so I thought, you know what, I'm going to write a tribute to my mom and thank her in my way.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: for all those beautiful motherisms.
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: And I called it a motherism.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: I didn't know what else to call it.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: That was what came to my mind.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: It was a motherism.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: And I couldn't wrap my brain around it.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: I kept trying to write and trying to write and I couldn't do it.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: And one day I met somebody on a Zoom and I said, I'm thinking about writing a book on motherisms like I'd been doing for like five years.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: And this woman reacted and kind of slumped.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: And, you know, I could just feel The energy change.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Well, one of my mother's motherisms is when you say something to someone and they react, be quiet.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: Let them percolate.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: And that came to my mind immediately.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: And I went, whoa.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: So I just sat there.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: And I let her percolate because I knew something was going on and I didn't know what I'd said, but something had triggered something in her mind.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: And she finally said, well, you don't know me, you know, we've just met and you wouldn't know that I'm actually estranged from my mom.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: And I haven't spoken to her in four or five years.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: And I went, but I said nothing.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: I just sat there.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: And, sorry, this gets me emotional every time.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: Anyway, and we sat there another, probably, it seemed like an hour.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: It was probably a minute.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: Anyway, and she finally went and she sat up straight and she, like, her whole demeanor changed.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: And she got this big smile on her face.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: She said, but thank you.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: I said, you're welcome, with a question mark at the end.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: And she said, You just reminded me of a couple of things.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: My mother's always saying that she said to me that I've actually always lived by.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: So I kind of went and we, and I said, you're welcome.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: And we talked a little bit and then we just went on to our one-on-one and got off.
- 42:20SPEAKER_03: And I got off that call and Tina, I've never been so emotional.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, I cried for half an hour.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, I just couldn't stop crying.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: And a lot of it was my feeling of, oh man, if I could just have my mother for five more minutes, the idea of not, of having a mother and not talking to her, I just, I couldn't, I couldn't, I don't know.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I just couldn't anyway.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: And, but the other thing that affected me was I went and I went, And all of a sudden, some of my mother's motherisms started coming to me and I started writing them down.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: And I realized that that's what was stopping me from writing the book.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: Because my mother always said, leave your ego at the door.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: Don't air your dirty laundry in public.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: Keep your voice down.
- 43:14SPEAKER_03: The neighbors might hear.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Those were motherisms that I grew up with.
- 43:19SPEAKER_03: And I realized that that's why I was having a hard time writing it.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: And it wasn't about my mother.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: It was about mothers.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: So I ended up interviewing 37 people with their motherisms, the story behind it, and I've compiled it into a collection.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, that sounds amazing.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: So I'm, I'm wondering the, what came into my mind is right now with the whole self love and women empowering women, um, A lot of us grew up with our mothers sort of, I don't want to use the word taming, but you know, some of us were loud, not obnoxious, but we were loud and very free with our opinions.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: And our moms would tell us to like, you know, cool it down a little bit, right?
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Because of how they were brought up.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Women were meant like really women were not meant to be heard.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Women had to be that pretty woman on the stage or on the podium.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: And they were just there to be looked at and not really, you know, conversed with.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: How how like how does that fit into your mother isms in your book?
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: Because a lot of that may not necessarily be like relevant today.
- 44:42SPEAKER_03: Relevant.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: Good point.
- 44:45SPEAKER_03: My mother was not like that.
- 44:47SPEAKER_03: My mother was profound.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: My mother was way ahead of her time.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, if my mother could have, if my mother probably did burn her bra, but I mean, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: My mother believed that never ever make the excuse that I didn't get the job because I was a girl or I can't do that because I'm a girl.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: You're a human being.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: And don't make excuses.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: The only excuse you can make is your excuse.
- 45:17SPEAKER_03: You're the only one stopping yourself.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: So anyway, so that's why I was brought up.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: So I didn't even think of that, but I ended up with 37 completely different motherisms.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: Some of them were ones that I grew up with.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: Some of them were that I'd never heard of.
- 45:37SPEAKER_03: Some of them were from not from their mother because they didn't have a good relationship with their mother, but they were from a female mentor or an aunt or somebody that they knew.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: And I didn't restrict it to just mothers.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: Well, and the thing is, I mean, women, we are natural nurturers, right?
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: And so we have, there is something in all of us that is mothering.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: In any way, like it could be positive or negative.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: So I think in that situation, like this book, I think that's great.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: It's like the it's the woman's wise eye coming out.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: And I think some of the ones that some of the stories have are just I mean, hit me.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: You know, I interviewed all these people and then I transcribed it and it was like.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: Man, I mean, I interviewed absolutely no problem because I had said things that I asked and everything.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: And then after the fact, when I started transcribing it, it took me forever to transcribe it because I got so emotional.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: I never realized how much it affected me and brought back memories of my childhood and brought back just memories of women that I knew.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: And just because not all of them are wonderful.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Well, no,
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: because...
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm just thinking like some of us, some of us women were like, you know, like I said, we were tamed and we couldn't allow our true selves to come out.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: And it's, you know, we can say that in my generation.
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: So I would imagine in our mom's generation, it was even worse.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: And so, yeah, there's going to be a little bit of that negative connotation in a lot of them.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Oh,
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: yeah.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: And how they shared it and, you know, just, yeah.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: It was a very interesting, I think I'm probably going to do a sequel.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: Oh,
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: it sounds like you probably can because there's a lot out there.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: And I'm thinking about
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: fatherisms.
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: Ooh, that would be good.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because one thing that I realized very quickly was that the motherism is the nurturing.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: The fatherism is more of the training.
- 47:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: Getting you prepared for life.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: So that's what I'm, I'm, I don't know.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: We'll see once this comes out.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: It's been, it's been a long haul.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it's going to be, you're going to do awesome though, because I mean, you know, we're going back how many years, right?
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: I'm sure that the people that you were interviewing are not just your age.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: They're probably like a range of ages, right?
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: So, yeah.
- 48:25SPEAKER_00: So, and, and then backgrounds as well.
- 48:27UNKNOWN: Right.
- 48:27UNKNOWN: Because that has a lot to do with it.
- 48:29UNKNOWN: You know, where you come from, how you grew up.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love it.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: And I
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: kept everything very private.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: You know, the people's name, it's only their first name and their last initial.
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: And so nobody knows who they are.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: They can tell they, you can, you know, if, if you're in my book, you can say, Hey, I'm, I'm in Grace's book.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Go, go for it.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: You know because I, I kept it very private.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: And a couple of them are, you know, I'm excited about it.
- 48:58SPEAKER_03: I'm very, very excited about it.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: And I'm hoping that other people will become very excited about it.
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: And all of the proceeds, I'm picking a charity.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, good.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: And it'll probably be, you know, my mom was a single mom.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: Raised us until we were 14 until I was 14 and then remarried.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: And I ended up with a bonus dad, two bonus brothers and a bonus sister.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: And so I'm thinking that it'll probably either I'm trying to decide if it's going to be single mom, but I'm, I'm thinking that probably what it's going to be is abuse.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's yeah.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: I think that's where I'm going.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: It's unfortunate, but there's too much of that in the world.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:45SPEAKER_03: And you know, somebody said I should do trafficking and I'm like, no, this is about mothers.
- 49:50SPEAKER_03: And so I want it to be, I want it to pertain to mothers.
- 49:55SPEAKER_03: That's where I want the money to, I want it to be put to a good use.
- 49:59SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: That's, that's great.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: That's awesome of you.
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: I'm looking forward to seeing that.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: So when does that come out?
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: I've got to finish the editing.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: I'm in the final stages.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: I've got to finish the editing and I'm near the very end.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: And then I've got to get the book cover finalized.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: And I'm close, really close.
- 50:25SPEAKER_03: The graphic artist that I've used, she's come up with one that's But there's another one that's close.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: So I want to see, she's going to kind of redo it to kind of, to get an idea.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: And it's going to have my mother on the, on the
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: car.
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love that.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, she's going to be so proud.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: We looking down on you with, with her angel wings and saying, that's my grace.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, good for you.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: Good for you.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: I'm so excited for you.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: Is there anything that you want our listeners to hear from you before we close down here?
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: I
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: think, If nothing else, and I always say this, if nothing else, just remember, everybody has a story.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: And always, if you can be anything in this world, be kind and be gracious.
- 51:18SPEAKER_03: Because you don't know what their story is.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: So if you can eat, and because you don't have to know their story, you don't have to live their lives.
- 51:28SPEAKER_03: You know, one of my favorite saying is never look down on someone unless you're complimenting them on their shoes.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: That to me is so important.
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: But I think show that appreciation, show that gratitude.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: And if I can leave, I want to make gratitude a habit in the world.
- 51:48SPEAKER_03: I don't want, you know, I mean, we send flowers and we go to funerals and we say, oh, wonderful things.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: And, you know, when my husband passed away, the celebration of life I had for him was like unbelievable.
- 52:01SPEAKER_03: And all I kept thinking was, why didn't you people say this to him while he was alive?
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:08SPEAKER_03: Why didn't you tell him how much he meant to you?
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: And if anything, that that's my goal in life is that people know that being a part of my life is very important.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: And I'm going to let you know that.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's awesome.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 52:26SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for joining me today, Grace.
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: Thank you for having me.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: This has been
- 52:32SPEAKER_02: so much fun.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, so much fun.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: Thanks for listening.
