- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safer, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi team, welcome to the show. I'm so glad you're here today.
- 0:25In this episode, we're going to talk about one of the most
- 0:28common human experiences there is out there in the world, and
- 0:31that is the experience of blame. Super fun topic, I know, but
- 0:38actually this is one of the most powerful things that I talk
- 0:40about with coaching clients and I want to have this conversation
- 0:43with you. One of the keys to having
- 0:47powerful influence in your world, one of the keys to
- 0:50creating a fulfilled life, to finding freedom in your own
- 0:54life, to feeling lighter, to feeling more ease is to take
- 0:59radical ownership. One of the keys to being impact
- 1:02ready is radical ownership. Taking radical ownership in your
- 1:06own life to ask the question, what can I own here is one of
- 1:11the most powerful things that you can do because it's saying
- 1:15to yourself, I'm taking responsibility for my part in
- 1:18the situation. So we've established that.
- 1:21We've talked about it so many times on the show.
- 1:23But what gets in the way of radical ownership?
- 1:27It's that thing that we deal with in our lives, every single
- 1:29one of us. The thing that we deny is
- 1:32happening so often, but something that every single one
- 1:35of us has feels in some area, some realm of our life.
- 1:40And that is the condition, the feeling, the experience of
- 1:44blame. In this day and age, there's
- 1:47plenty of blame to go around. I know you've been blamed for
- 1:50things in your life. I'm very certain that you
- 1:54currently blame certain things in your life.
- 1:57I know I do. I know I'm constantly figuring
- 2:01out and mining out new things that I have kind of hidden blame
- 2:06around. And some people deal with it
- 2:08more than others, but nobody is exempt.
- 2:11Even high performers struggle with blame just like everybody
- 2:14else. And while we can acknowledge
- 2:16there's plenty of blame to go around and that oftentimes blame
- 2:20is appropriate, yes, I'm saying that I'm saying that oftentimes
- 2:25blame is appropriate. It's almost never helpful.
- 2:29And that's a really hard distinction for most people to
- 2:32make. There's plenty of blame to go
- 2:34around, and yes, oftentimes blame is merited, but it's
- 2:39almost never helpful. And this is really hard.
- 2:41So we're going to call out the hard here.
- 2:44You know, there's a saying, while all truth is true, not all
- 2:47truth is helpful. And what that really means to me
- 2:50is while the facts might make us feel better, not all facts are
- 2:54useful to help us improve our lives.
- 2:57This is the really tricky part about blame because blame has us
- 3:02focused on truths, specific truths, but they're truths that
- 3:07don't actually help advance things in our life.
- 3:09And at the same time, blame has us ignoring truths that will.
- 3:15It's like a filter that we look through where we can see some
- 3:18things and we can't see the others.
- 3:20In other words, the more we blame things in our life, the
- 3:23less access we have to solutions, the less agency we
- 3:28experience in our own life. Something we've described before
- 3:32is the more we feel like a victim in our life, the more we
- 3:36perceive that we're getting tossed around in the waves of
- 3:38life, so to speak, the less we get to be the captain of our own
- 3:41ship. If you remember a past podcast
- 3:45episode where we've talked about problem energy versus solution
- 3:48energy, problem energy is not positive or negative, it's just
- 3:54what it is, but it's low frequency energy and blame lives
- 3:57there. Blame is a place where we are
- 4:01having feelings of resentment or anger or frustration or
- 4:05irritation, and blame lives in that low frequency zone.
- 4:10That's fine, it is what it is, but you can never get to
- 4:12solution from a place of problem energy.
- 4:15And so when we are in blame, we lose access to our solutions.
- 4:20And that's what happens so many times for people.
- 4:23Blame is one of those elusive things.
- 4:25It comes in a lot of different forms.
- 4:28It wears a lot of different disguises, but it's there no
- 4:31matter who you are. And it sneaks around and it
- 4:33pokes holes in our sails. It drains our energy and it
- 4:37keeps us at that low frequency, that low problem energy
- 4:41frequency. For these very reasons, as a
- 4:44coach, we understand that if you deeply care about someone and
- 4:49the trajectory of their life, you'll care about the amount of
- 4:52responsibility they're bringing to their life.
- 4:55If I were to say it another way, I would say if you care about
- 4:58others, you're going to care about their ownership.
- 5:00It's why we care about the ownership that our spouse takes,
- 5:04because we care about the trajectory of their life.
- 5:06It's why we care about our kids learning to take personal
- 5:10responsibility, or why it matters with our colleagues.
- 5:14Because if we care about people, we are ultimately going to care
- 5:17that they are able to take ownership and have access to
- 5:21their own agency and their power and their solutions.
- 5:26Because we all deal with this because it's ever present and
- 5:29everybody has this experience at some point.
- 5:31The question isn't whether blame is diminishing your life or not,
- 5:35It's where. It's where.
- 5:37Where in your life is blame having that diminishing effect?
- 5:42We have this experience pop up in all areas of our life around
- 5:45money, around our intimate relationship, our friendships,
- 5:49our career and work, our health, and really just in general
- 5:54around opportunities that we have.
- 5:56We know what the typical blame sounds like.
- 5:59It often sounds like, oh, she did this to me or I never had
- 6:01that opportunity. Nothing ever works out for me.
- 6:04I didn't have access to that. They should have done this.
- 6:07That's kind of the the obvious way that we think about blame,
- 6:12but there are some sneaky ones. Blame can also sound like this.
- 6:16That would never work. That can't happen.
- 6:19They would never go for it. That's impossible.
- 6:24That's never been done before. Someone else is already doing
- 6:27it. I don't have time for that.
- 6:31We can't do that because my spouse would hate it.
- 6:35We can't do that because my kids would never go for it.
- 6:39The market won't allow for that or doesn't want it.
- 6:42Other people with more money and power have already done it or
- 6:46have already saturated that space.
- 6:49Notice how a lot of these things are things that we probably say
- 6:52on a weekly basis in regard to a lot of different things in our
- 6:55life. And at first glance, these
- 6:58statements don't sound like blame.
- 7:00At least they didn't to me. But when you look at the root of
- 7:03the statement, it's all about feeling like power lies outside
- 7:07of yourself. That's the thing, that there's
- 7:11some other external force or factor that is in charge of you.
- 7:15And that's a lot of what blame is.
- 7:17It's a shift in power outside of yourself, often US giving the
- 7:22power away. And that's why we think radical
- 7:24ownership is so important because it allows you to reclaim
- 7:29your own power to make the shift so that it's no longer outside
- 7:33of you, but within you. That's how you get access to
- 7:36solution to things. You take responsibility.
- 7:39You ask that question, what can I own here?
- 7:44And the impact of that is that you reclaim your power and you
- 7:46start to find a new way forward. We're always stuck in our life
- 7:51if we believe that the power for us to do something lies in
- 7:55someone else's hands. I have felt that way so many
- 7:59times, especially in my adolescence and my 20s.
- 8:04So how do you know if you have places in your life where you
- 8:07are unconsciously blaming? Well, like with so many other
- 8:12things, we can look to the language that we use because it
- 8:16often reveals areas where we are empowered or areas where we are
- 8:20disempowered. And as we said, blame is the act
- 8:23of putting power outside of ourselves.
- 8:25It is a disempowering act. So you can look for specific
- 8:30language. Disempowered language looks like
- 8:32this. Maybe I can't.
- 8:35I have to. I should.
- 8:37I'll try. I don't know, so I'll stop.
- 8:41So that's disempowered language. Empowered language is not
- 8:44actually all that different. It's really just one word that's
- 8:48switched out of those previous statements.
- 8:51Instead of maybe it's yes or no. Instead of I can't, it's I can.
- 8:58Instead of I have to. It's.
- 8:59I get to instead of I should, it's.
- 9:03I choose to instead of I'll try. It's I will or I will not.
- 9:10Instead of I don't know, so I'll stop.
- 9:12It's, I don't know. So I'll find out that language
- 9:17is decisive. It's being in choice.
- 9:19It's taking ownership of your actions and your time and your
- 9:23energy. I know that you can feel the
- 9:25difference even with me just reading them out loud.
- 9:29The great thing is that when we start paying attention to our
- 9:31language and we start solving for that first, it often solves
- 9:34like 50 other problems that are all stemming from the same place
- 9:38of disempowerment. So you might be working on your
- 9:41language or on money, but it also then bleeds into your
- 9:45language around your marriage, and it solves problems there and
- 9:49then that bleeds into your language around how you show up
- 9:52for your deadlines and work, and that gets solved.
- 9:56Now, I'm not saying this is easy to do, just that it's freeing to
- 10:02do. I'll acknowledge that it might
- 10:03be simple in strategy, but it could be kind of hard to get out
- 10:07of the habit of it. Blame can be very addicting and
- 10:11sometimes it's hard to break away from those addictive
- 10:14tentacles that have us. I mean, we know that blame gives
- 10:19us something otherwise we wouldn't do it.
- 10:21It gives us a reprieve from our own feelings about something.
- 10:25It sometimes gives us a little hit of dopamine like gossip or
- 10:28drama. I mean, have you ever had that
- 10:30something happens and you might sit around and and justify
- 10:33blaming someone else with your family or your friends and it
- 10:36gives you that little like high that's dopamine in the short
- 10:40term. What it does is it abdicates us
- 10:43of the responsibility that we know we need to take in our own
- 10:46life. So the question that I have for
- 10:50you is where is blame showing up in your life?
- 10:54And at at first pass, I know it doesn't seem like a very fun
- 10:57question to have to answer, but remember, we're all in the same
- 11:01boat here. Every single one of us finds
- 11:03ways to hand over our personal power by putting blame on other
- 11:07things, even sometimes unconsciously.
- 11:10But every time we do that, we're essentially saying I have no
- 11:14choice. The awesome thing about this
- 11:18whole situation is that we have a lot more agency and personal
- 11:22power than we think we do. Than we realize you have this
- 11:26tremendous amount of power that's buried beneath all of
- 11:29this blame. And when you can dig it out, you
- 11:32get to experience more choice. And more choice equates to more
- 11:36freedom. And there's nothing better than
- 11:39feeling personal freedom in your own life, baby.
- 11:41It's just the best. Again, it takes breaking out of
- 11:46the addictive nature of all of this.
- 11:48It requires that you take a look at some of your internal
- 11:51conversations going on in your head and being really
- 11:54intentional about the language you use.
- 11:57But you can do it. And this year is an awesome
- 12:00opportunity to stop wasting time and valuable energy blaming
- 12:04other people and switch gears to mining out and digging out your
- 12:08own agency and choice again. You'll find power you didn't
- 12:11even realize you have. So I hope that this helps and
- 12:16spurs on some thought. I'm really excited about this
- 12:19idea of freeing myself from more of the blame that might be
- 12:22hiding away somewhere unconscious.
