- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30OK, We are talking about unsolicited advice from people
- 0:34that you just did not even see it coming.
- 0:36You did not want it. You did not ask for it.
- 0:38You did not see it. This is all predicated on a
- 0:41conversation that I had with a dear friend of mine who just
- 0:44went to a big event, very excited to go, couldn't wait to
- 0:47go, had been you know planning it for months and months and
- 0:50months. Goes to this event and she's at
- 0:52an evening, a relaxed evening with a group of people.
- 0:55And this woman who claims to be a Yogi, claims to be a coach,
- 1:00claims to be very self aware from her titles, all of a sudden
- 1:05starts talking to my dear friend and also a client and says I
- 1:12need you to take a breath, I need you to blank, blank, blank.
- 1:16And she's giving her all these directions in the midst of all
- 1:19these other women sitting around and listening to her.
- 1:23Now I am a very, very, very big proponent of not coaching people
- 1:28unless they ask for it. Because if you don't ask for it,
- 1:33you don't want it, You're not going to listen anyway and
- 1:36there's no point in putting somebody in an uncomfortable
- 1:39position. From my my side of the aisle,
- 1:42I'm not going to make somebody uncomfortable if they don't want
- 1:44to be uncomfortable. And I certainly would never do
- 1:46that in public. I don't even yell at my children
- 1:48in public. I mean, I when I would get upset
- 1:50with my kids when they were very small, I would always lean down
- 1:53and whisper in their ear. I would never humiliate somebody
- 1:56like that, least off an adult who's out having fun for the
- 2:00first time in a long time. But back to this part of the
- 2:03story. So this unsolicited advice comes
- 2:06at her. She doesn't expect it, and it
- 2:08wipes her out because she's just having fun.
- 2:11She's someone who's filled with energy to begin with, but nobody
- 2:15else was having a problem with it.
- 2:16Nobody else was doing anything. It was just this woman, and this
- 2:20woman decided that she was going to use her as an example for all
- 2:24these other people. Now the story gets even more
- 2:27convoluted because everybody else that was sitting there
- 2:30didn't say to this woman, hey, you know, let's just back off
- 2:35because right now in this world, we can't do that.
- 2:39When we do those things, we're afraid we're going to get called
- 2:41out from people because hey, everybody's allowed to be
- 2:44whoever they want to be right now.
- 2:46But when somebody is being hurt and someone's being victimized
- 2:49by somebody else's attention when they did not ask for it and
- 2:53they're coaching when they did not ask for it, it is completely
- 2:57unacceptable. So, one, why are we talking
- 3:00about this? So if you have this happen and
- 3:02you are put into this situation where someone is coming at you
- 3:07and they are trying to influence you, tell you something and you
- 3:11didn't ask for it. I am telling you right now me
- 3:16because you're here and I know if you're here I can tell you
- 3:19these things. The very first thing you need to
- 3:21do when you start to feel the twingy uncomfortableness, it is
- 3:25in your best interest to say I appreciate your feedback and I
- 3:31this is not a time where I choose to have it.
- 3:34It is OK to say I appreciate your feedback and it is OK.
- 3:39I don't want it right now. It is not something I want to
- 3:42discuss right now. This is not something I want to
- 3:45do in public. If you don't want to use the
- 3:47words, I appreciate your feedback because you don't.
- 3:50That is a softener that I'm giving you.
- 3:52If it was me and someone did that to me, I would say, listen,
- 3:56I understand that you want to give this feedback to me because
- 4:00I do understand that this person would want to give it to me.
- 4:03However, I'm not open to your feedback right now and that
- 4:06would shut them down in two seconds.
- 4:09And I've had this happen because of the world that I come from.
- 4:12In self development, there's lots of unsolicited advice that
- 4:15comes out at people and when it's unsolicited it is toxic
- 4:19because they're so unaware. And I want you to hear this
- 4:23piece more than anything. If you didn't ask for it and
- 4:27they are so unaware that they are giving it, unless you are in
- 4:32a dire situation where you are an absolute ready for death,
- 4:37like you need to go to rehab, it's unsolicited.
- 4:40Someone's coming at you to save your life.
- 4:43If it is not life saving, then you have every single right to
- 4:48not listen to that advice if you choose, because it is not
- 4:54something that they are putting in the right perspective, the
- 4:57right column of saying I first have to meet somebody where they
- 5:01are and I have to ask now it is a hardcore cold rule of coaching
- 5:05that people that come to you, you always have to ask.
- 5:09So are you open to my feedback? Are you giving me permission to
- 5:12coach you? And when you do that you now
- 5:14have a whole different arena to play in.
- 5:16But if that did not take place, you have every bit of of
- 5:20permission from me, anybody. I mean, as a as a coach who's
- 5:24done this forever. Shut it down.
- 5:26Because one, you're helping that person become a better coach,
- 5:29essentially because you're telling them they have to learn
- 5:31their boundaries. And two, you're protecting
- 5:33yourself. So remember, protecting yourself
- 5:36is the most important thing. OK, my friends, I will see you
- 5:40tomorrow. I hope you have a wonderful,
- 5:42blessed day. And don't take on that
- 5:45unsolicited advice. Bye.
