- 0:00Speaker 1: Forest Community, big tall drink of water. Quarterback can really
- 0:04Speaker 1: humme it downfield and we're rolling the Out of Bounds
- 0:10Speaker 1: Show one oh five nine the Zone ESPN that Mike
- 0:14Speaker 1: Detillier interview was electric. I like it. Lsu at Old,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Miss September nineteenth, Good morning to you, Welcome into the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Out of Bounds Show. Thank you for joining us. Lsu
- 0:28Speaker 1: at Ole, Miss September nineteenth. The betrayal Bowl, but the
- 0:33Speaker 1: hate Bowl too, right, there's a lot of a lot
- 0:38Speaker 1: of them. Animosity was hate too much? Okay, all right,
- 0:44Speaker 1: animosity driven around this bowl. We're powered by Pearl River Resort.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Good morning to you, welcome in to the show. And
- 0:53Speaker 1: uh we mentioned earlier on the show ESPN one oh
- 0:58Speaker 1: five down to the Zone that it was National Mac
- 1:03Speaker 1: and Cheese Day and Burgers Blues Barbecue. Dogwood flow Wood
- 1:07Speaker 1: has amazing mac and cheese, burgers blues barbecue b three
- 1:11Speaker 1: Dogwood flow Wood two brothers in Starbull Pork Belly. Mac
- 1:15Speaker 1: and cheese is great. So that's good. I love really
- 1:20Speaker 1: good mac and cheese. I mean, as a kid, I
- 1:22Speaker 1: had eat crappy mac and cheese, but I didn't know
- 1:24Speaker 1: any better. Then all of a sudden like we talked
- 1:28Speaker 1: about on the show, they got the culinary thing going
- 1:33Speaker 1: with mac and cheese. Crazy right, lobster mac and cheese.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You see those at steakhouses. Somebody ordered it it last
- 1:44Speaker 1: week at either Coast Chop House or b our Prime.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I don't remember. But and you know that's fine when
- 1:51Speaker 1: done right, I mean pork belly maca. You're putting protein now,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and it's just it's really incredible.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Well, when you think about Chick fil A adopted that, Chick
- 2:03Speaker 2: fil A is known for doing one thing, chicken. They
- 2:06Speaker 2: usually never did anything but chicken and fries. And now
- 2:08Speaker 2: they got mac and cheese. Okay, I haven't. I almost
- 2:14Speaker 2: stay with burgers, blues barbecue, dogwood flowood.
- 2:16Speaker 1: That sounds like a safe bit and two brothers. Yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 1: When when Barton rolled that out ten years ago, people
- 2:24Speaker 1: were like, this is a different twelve years ago. Technically
- 2:27Speaker 1: you did. He opened in a good year twenty fourteen
- 2:30Speaker 1: deck and going number one. But when he rolled that out,
- 2:34Speaker 1: people are like, what what just happened? And then he
- 2:36Speaker 1: rolled out nobody had done wings the way he does Wings.
- 2:38Speaker 1: The reason why I love them one they're amazing too.
- 2:41Speaker 1: They're smoked on a big smoker right outside, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: right there outside the restaurant. But they're dry. Then that's
- 2:50Speaker 1: that's like, that's right. I mean, I I like wings
- 2:54Speaker 1: with some sauce on it, not like four pounds, but man,
- 2:58Speaker 1: his are dry. And this is before he knew. I mean,
- 3:02Speaker 1: he wouldn't have done it anyway, but he needs to
- 3:04Speaker 1: do his way. But y'all know I'm a big less
- 3:08Speaker 1: sauce is more or let's just do the sauce on
- 3:10Speaker 1: the side so that we can apply accordingly. Who knew
- 3:15Speaker 1: that that Barton Dinkins would would cook my favorite wings
- 3:20Speaker 1: at Two Brothers in that not only are they smoked,
- 3:24Speaker 1: but they're dry phenomenal.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Before they opened, it was because you know, before they opened,
- 3:32Speaker 2: the barn would just cook.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it would just cooked late night. It'd be late lately. Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And man, you talk about beast, I've been back there
- 3:43Speaker 1: with him when he's doing different things, you know, because
- 3:46Speaker 1: he can do a brisk at, a butt all those
- 3:48Speaker 1: things in his sleep. Yeah. Yeah, Now he's doing more
- 3:52Speaker 1: stuff kind of higher. I mean, I love Two Brothers
- 3:57Speaker 1: bar and grill food, and it is elevated bar and
- 3:59Speaker 1: grill food. And there is a difference between regular run
- 4:02Speaker 1: of the mill Barn Group, Grill Food and Elevated Bar
- 4:06Speaker 1: and grill Food and die bars that serve really good food.
- 4:10Speaker 1: But Older Brother Bistro is where he's really doing some
- 4:12Speaker 1: cool culinary stuff. Some of those specials at night are ridiculous.
- 4:18Speaker 1: He is him.
- 4:19Speaker 2: There's a couple more up there, but he, along with
- 4:21Speaker 2: maybe one or two, I trust him with anything they cook. Yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. Yeah, I mean they can probably cook
- 4:27Speaker 2: cereal better than I can. Yes, oh yeah, yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 1: We need to get you to cut down on your
- 4:36Speaker 1: cereal intake by about fifty percent. You would still be
- 4:40Speaker 1: in the top one percent of consuming cereal. And again,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you're an Indo chronologist dream. I think that's right, which
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't know how you wouldn't make eight hundred ten
- 4:51Speaker 1: million dollars years and in the Indo Chronologist in the
- 4:54Speaker 1: Sunbelt with everybody that's determined to be obese, and he
- 4:59Speaker 1: is much seed oil and sugar fake sugar as they can.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But I'm just thinking out loud. Now back to National
- 5:06Speaker 1: Mac and Cheese Day, which I may have to hammer
- 5:08Speaker 1: something today and I'm going to Pearl River Resort, so
- 5:10Speaker 1: I may have to dive into Mominem's for lunch and
- 5:13Speaker 1: grab some of their mac and cheese. I've already told
- 5:16Speaker 1: you they're black they're black eyed peas, or really I
- 5:20Speaker 1: get them before I sit down, and it's part of
- 5:23Speaker 1: it's part of an appetizer. I say, I want to
- 5:25Speaker 1: side of black eyed peas. That's what I do. It's
- 5:29Speaker 1: what I you know. But but anyway, back I'm getting
- 5:31Speaker 1: thrown off. Back to National Mac and Cheese Day. It's
- 5:34Speaker 1: also another national day. It's National Nude Day, nice, which
- 5:39Speaker 1: I'm I'm a big proponent, you know, a big fan
- 5:43Speaker 1: of this. So it's it celebrates body positivity and the
- 5:49Speaker 1: freedom of the human form right every July fourteenth. So
- 5:56Speaker 1: if your boss didn't let everybody know that it was
- 6:00Speaker 1: National new Day, that's on them. And you can be
- 6:04Speaker 1: the first one to celebrate in your office today Actional
- 6:09Speaker 1: Nude Day like that. Oh gosh, Todd says. The crawfish
- 6:15Speaker 1: mac and cheese, it probably's on frenchmen and Elijah Fields
- 6:21Speaker 1: is fantabulous. Okay, yeah, that sounds good. He just sent
- 6:27Speaker 1: me a picture of it. It's in a it looks
- 6:29Speaker 1: like it's in a cast iron. They serve it in
- 6:32Speaker 1: a cast iron. Skillet at the table. It looks amazing.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Crawfish mac and cheese. It probablys or prey leaves, pray.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I remember the first time I had lobster mac and cheese. Yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 1: when you get it when you're at a phenomenal steakhouse
- 6:52Speaker 1: with your person or friends and you've got the steaks
- 6:58Speaker 1: and you got the juice, the beverages that you want,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and somebody drops really good lobster mac and cheese as
- 7:08Speaker 1: a side at the table, on the table. That's that's
- 7:12Speaker 1: gonna be a good night.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Brady had it as a entree twelve years ago. Wow,
- 7:20Speaker 2: at Commonore Bob's when they were the little Guy. Oh oh,
- 7:25Speaker 2: the little place across from older brother Bistro. All right,
- 7:29Speaker 2: all right, that's now a rapist which is an insane
- 7:32Speaker 2: Venezuelan restaurant.
- 7:34Speaker 1: God, they can cook good food and for breakfast. I
- 7:38Speaker 1: mean we went in there for brunch. But yeah, it's
- 7:41Speaker 1: it's good. It's authentic. The family's really neat. Uh yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 1: so do you had it? I don't remember how many
- 7:50Speaker 1: years ago I started having it traveling at steakhouses, but
- 7:55Speaker 1: it's good. We had it at at the Wind Steakhouse
- 7:59Speaker 1: last fall. All it's good. Yeah, so, but there's there's
- 8:06Speaker 1: all kinds of good. But this crawfish mac and cheese
- 8:08Speaker 1: looks at pray Lee's on frenchmen looks great.
- 8:15Speaker 2: He's just smart man. Look at that. People love mac
- 8:18Speaker 2: and cheese. It's easy.
- 8:19Speaker 1: He served in a super cool, small cast iron little dish.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Love it. Uh, Diesel Golfer says, why is it that
- 8:28Speaker 1: when I hear Mike d talk, I pictured Dicky V. Baby.
- 8:32Speaker 1: That's not bad, Okay, I feel that I feel a
- 8:35Speaker 1: little bit of that, a little bit of Dicky V.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Mike's Mike's so good. He's he's an entertainer and he's knowledgeable.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He gets excited too. Yeah, he's passionate about what he does,
- 8:46Speaker 1: which is fun. That's what we want. He's not a
- 8:50Speaker 1: boring interview, that's for sure. Oh my gosh, it's crazy.
- 8:57Speaker 1: All right. Uh your reaction on the Dancing Rabbit golf
- 9:01Speaker 1: text line to anything we just talked about, which I
- 9:03Speaker 1: don't know what it was? Six ozho one eight eight
- 9:07Speaker 1: five three seven seven six find us on X at
- 9:10Speaker 1: bow bounce. Oh all right, let's ride the out of
- 9:59Speaker 1: bounds one five down the zone ESPN. Yes, Mike Detillier
- 10:04Speaker 1: was electric. You can find that on YouTube search out
- 10:08Speaker 1: of Bound Sports, Mike d fantastic. We went Lane Kiffin,
- 10:16Speaker 1: Sam Levitt, and Charlie Weiss junior, and then he dropped.
- 10:20Speaker 1: He tied in Edo's run. Talking about Lane's ability to
- 10:24Speaker 1: see everybody on the field and how that is like
- 10:27Speaker 1: point zero one percent in football. That's why you got
- 10:30Speaker 1: so many people, That's why you got some people in
- 10:31Speaker 1: the press box and so on. But some people are
- 10:35Speaker 1: just more gifted and can see it all on the field.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I don't know if that's because Lane was a quarterback
- 10:41Speaker 1: and so on. A lot of times that goes for
- 10:43Speaker 1: the point guard two or the catcher slash shortstop, but
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's rare in other positions. Corners, linebacker, they can't pick
- 10:52Speaker 1: up the whole thing. Uh, And they can't later in life, uh,
- 10:56Speaker 1: wide receiver sol on as far as understanding the whole thing.
- 11:01Speaker 1: But like at Drew Brees, I could see him being
- 11:03Speaker 1: able to pick up all twenty two on the field.
- 11:05Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. The guy's frea key. He's
- 11:07Speaker 1: on the spectrum like Lane, and he was. He was
- 11:11Speaker 1: a goat of New Orleans. I mean, he's the greatest
- 11:14Speaker 1: player by a million miles to ever play there. But
- 11:18Speaker 1: Eddie Oh, who's coached with Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: Sean Payton, talking about how he's never seen anything like
- 11:27Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin having the ability to see a play and
- 11:30Speaker 1: see all twenty two on the field. Y'all watch, I mean,
- 11:32Speaker 1: I watch All twenty two on Sunday. Y'all see the
- 11:35Speaker 1: All twenty two and you see the different things that
- 11:37Speaker 1: you can pick up off the apps, whether it's ESPN's
- 11:40Speaker 1: or whatnot. And it is cool. I don't know what
- 11:43Speaker 1: I'm looking for, neither to you, but it's still fun
- 11:46Speaker 1: to watch it. But the fact that Lane can go, oh,
- 11:51Speaker 1: I'm just gonna I'm gonna change my play secrets on
- 11:54Speaker 1: this drive because they're showing they're tipping their hand right
- 11:58Speaker 1: here on the on the defense, right here on the
- 12:01Speaker 1: second level on the left side, We're just gonna we're
- 12:04Speaker 1: gonna run this play. Tight end is gonna be wide open,
- 12:08Speaker 1: and they are. Because Lane's playing with college coaches, I mean,
- 12:11Speaker 1: NFL is gonna be much more difficult for him, But
- 12:14Speaker 1: I mean he's he's playing with college coaches. I mean,
- 12:17Speaker 1: that's just a different, different deal. I mean, Mike Leach
- 12:22Speaker 1: played with college coaches and he had half the talent
- 12:25Speaker 1: Kiffin did. There's just some people that are just like,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I've just got you right here on a string. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: I mean Lane can scheme up plays where people are
- 12:34Speaker 1: wide open, wide open. That doesn't that that that happens
- 12:41Speaker 1: in high school, in college, that doesn't happen in the NFL. Right,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I mean, people are all over the receiver tight end.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Y'all see it every sin It's so much fun to watch.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's one of the red zones, insane, and
- 12:55Speaker 1: they're going play to play and I guys are they're
- 12:59Speaker 1: they're tackling the guy basically putting their body on him
- 13:04Speaker 1: as a shadow before the right as the ball gets there.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I mean, it is just threading the needle every single play. Now.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I know sometimes Andy Reid, Shawn, there's a few of
- 13:15Speaker 1: them that can work a team here or there, but
- 13:18Speaker 1: that's few or far between. Lane. Sure he'll have guys
- 13:22Speaker 1: wide open this year. And this guy Green the tight end,
- 13:26Speaker 1: who's six seven, Holy Mary olzeb what's what's Laye gonna
- 13:31Speaker 1: do with him? Seriously? I mean he made Elijah Moore
- 13:37Speaker 1: into a second round pick. Me. He made Elijah Moore. Look,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you know, look like Tyreek Hill. Seriously, I mean he
- 13:45Speaker 1: walked in and this nobody. Nobody was talking about Elijah
- 13:48Speaker 1: Moore as a kid recruited from I think Georgia, that
- 13:51Speaker 1: Georgia didn't want, you know, nice probably high level three,
- 13:55Speaker 1: maybe a low four on a site, and all of
- 13:57Speaker 1: a sudden, all he does. He catches like ninety eight
- 14:00Speaker 1: footballs in one year. That's Lane. That's scheme that I'm
- 14:04Speaker 1: better than you. I can see all twenty two and
- 14:07Speaker 1: you can all right, Let's go back to what Mike
- 14:10Speaker 1: d said about Charlie Weiss junior. A lot of times
- 14:12Speaker 1: we give coordinators and assistant coaches too much credit. Sometimes
- 14:17Speaker 1: we don't give them enough. Sometimes they're under somebody who's
- 14:21Speaker 1: unbelievable at their craft and profession, like Lane right now,
- 14:24Speaker 1: or like a Saban or like a Peek Herrol, and
- 14:27Speaker 1: they fall, you know, they get out from the nest.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Charlie Weiss senior, Romeo Crenell under Bill Belichick in the
- 14:32Speaker 1: early years of the Patriots, Josh McDaniels, he's tried twice
- 14:38Speaker 1: to be a head coach. He gets out. He's very good.
- 14:40Speaker 1: You know, I think maybe as an assistant gets out
- 14:44Speaker 1: of the nest, can't do it. That's fine. If some
- 14:47Speaker 1: people are CEOs, some people are EVPs, some people are vps,
- 14:50Speaker 1: some people are regional managers. Whatever. But the one thing
- 14:54Speaker 1: that jumped out at me when he mentioned Charlie Weiss
- 14:57Speaker 1: Junior was two texts, Bam, bam. Could Charlie Weiss Junior
- 15:02Speaker 1: be the next coach at Mississippi State? Well, here's the deal,
- 15:09Speaker 1: he will. He already turned down an NFL oc job.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Right Lane was able to keep him. They kept but
- 15:16Speaker 1: first of all, Old Miss gave him a massive deal
- 15:19Speaker 1: because Ole Miss is committed to winning. But he didn't
- 15:23Speaker 1: want to leave Lane, and so he and then the
- 15:29Speaker 1: NFL called. And I think he's one of the few
- 15:31Speaker 1: that likes the college game. Right now, he may end
- 15:34Speaker 1: up in the NFL. But Charlie Weiss Junior, Look, it's
- 15:36Speaker 1: Lane's offense and he's the play caller. But sometimes you
- 15:39Speaker 1: do have somebody around you that is super talent. He
- 15:41Speaker 1: may or may not be. I don't know. I think
- 15:44Speaker 1: he's probably pretty damn good because it was impressive. You
- 15:47Speaker 1: know that he was able to keep it going at
- 15:49Speaker 1: Old Miss when Lane wasn't there, and especially because the
- 15:57Speaker 1: ole Miss defense had some holes in it in the
- 15:58Speaker 1: College Football Playoff and so not too Lane that didn't count.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I'm talking about Georgia and Miami. But no, my answer
- 16:10Speaker 1: to that that you should be able to do that
- 16:12Speaker 1: if he's that well, first of all, you already went
- 16:15Speaker 1: to that well because Levy spent two years under Lane.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I don't think Levy had near the impact and influence
- 16:25Speaker 1: that Weiss Junior has with Lane, but he spent two
- 16:28Speaker 1: years in Oxford as the you know, entitle OC. Because
- 16:34Speaker 1: you've come off of Morehead as an OC for only
- 16:38Speaker 1: two years at Penn State and that was a disaster.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And then Selman thought, well, let's do it again. When
- 16:43Speaker 1: everybody that I was talking to on campus and off
- 16:47Speaker 1: was saying you got to get a sitting head coach,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and John Summer all wanted the job. Brett Beelama wanted
- 16:52Speaker 1: the job at that time, and Manny Diaz won the job,
- 16:55Speaker 1: and Barry Otam won the job. But you went with
- 16:58Speaker 1: a coach who had two years offensive coordinator experience, just
- 17:02Speaker 1: like Joe Morehead when you hired Jeff Levy. With this,
- 17:05Speaker 1: it's always the debate of how much is Charlie Weiss junior. Look,
- 17:10Speaker 1: he's a big part of it. He's in the building,
- 17:12Speaker 1: he's spending a gazillion hours around Levitt and Lane and
- 17:16Speaker 1: so on. But it's trying to balance. It's still Lane's offense.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Not that he doesn't lean on ass Wi's junior a
- 17:25Speaker 1: million different things. It's that where you are now and
- 17:30Speaker 1: the fact that you are in such a rut and
- 17:33Speaker 1: have made so many poor decisions in football post Mullen
- 17:38Speaker 1: other than Leech that I just I don't think you
- 17:43Speaker 1: can do it, Okay. I think you've got to either
- 17:47Speaker 1: go get someone who you know is the OC and
- 17:50Speaker 1: has been one for like five or six plus years,
- 17:52Speaker 1: or you got to get a sitting head coach. And
- 17:54Speaker 1: I don't mean two or three years. I'm talking about
- 17:56Speaker 1: double that, if not triple that experience of you. I
- 18:01Speaker 1: know he's or he's been in G five and he's
- 18:05Speaker 1: got a nice record of thirty five and twenty one.
- 18:09Speaker 1: The way he's primed. Yeah, he's been through. What Signetti,
- 18:12Speaker 1: I mean, I can drop that again, which people loved it.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I can drop Signetti from yesterday in the next segment,
- 18:20Speaker 1: talking about why he left Bama to go to Indiana,
- 18:25Speaker 1: PA Okay, I I mean he left the universe. I
- 18:32Speaker 1: hope people understandstand what I think about this. He left
- 18:37Speaker 1: the University of Alabama when they were winning and kicking
- 18:41Speaker 1: everybody's you know what, to go take a job at
- 18:44Speaker 1: a school that's budgets like one hundred and twenty k.
- 18:51Speaker 1: And then he just ripped off a bunch of wins.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I get his dad coach there, but still, and then
- 18:57Speaker 1: he went to Elon y'all have never heard of in
- 18:59Speaker 1: neither of I know. I think one of our teams
- 19:01Speaker 1: played them. And then James Madison, good hell, we're dropping
- 19:06Speaker 1: that signaty audio on the other side.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Oppressive nose.

- 19:37Speaker 3: far out in the water after the sun goes down,

- 21:42Speaker 1: It's gonna be well done and I'm excited about it,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and I hope you're excited about it. Taste Italian Kitchen
- 21:48Speaker 1: dot com. You can find it in the Renaissance, get
- 21:50Speaker 1: it to go, order or down in the bar is
- 21:53Speaker 1: absolutely beautiful. The bar screams, Tito's spread, a beautiful Tito's
- 21:57Speaker 1: espresso martini while you're waiting on your fried only before
- 22:01Speaker 1: you dive into your let's go. Oh that stuffed pork
- 22:08Speaker 1: chop bam. How about that which I told Jackson about
- 22:11Speaker 1: several weeks ago because I started eating the stuff port
- 22:14Speaker 1: chop when they opened four years ago in Starbull Uh
- 22:17Speaker 1: and that that that bar is beautiful too. It's not
- 22:20Speaker 1: as big and it doesn't need to be, but it's
- 22:21Speaker 1: it's pretty. Before I dropped the Signetti audio, I do
- 22:27Speaker 1: want to get into one thing because I got a
- 22:29Speaker 1: text on the Dancing Rabbit golf text line about what
- 22:33Speaker 1: I did a segment or two. I don't remember Jackson
- 22:35Speaker 1: on rich Eisen doing the podcast this is Sports Center. Well,
- 22:41Speaker 1: I nerd out on that because it means a lot
- 22:43Speaker 1: to me because I was in high school in college
- 22:45Speaker 1: and whether I was in high school, coming on, coming
- 22:48Speaker 1: in from going out, or a late game that I
- 22:51Speaker 1: played in or went to or whatever. You watch Sports
- 22:53Speaker 1: Center right before you went to bed when I was
- 22:56Speaker 1: in college. You did the same thing with your buddies,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and then when I was bartending, like it was great.
- 23:01Speaker 1: You know, you never knew how good it was to
- 23:03Speaker 1: be able to get home at eleven eleven thirty midnight
- 23:06Speaker 1: if not, and then knowing that you had Keith and
- 23:08Speaker 1: Dan or Craig kilborn On or Rich Eisen or Stu
- 23:11Speaker 1: Scott or any number call Ravach or any number of guys. Well,
- 23:16Speaker 1: Rich Eisen was part of that crew, that fraternity. Yeah,
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's already obviously. Linda Cone was amazing. She's done more
- 23:23Speaker 1: sports centers than anyone else on the planet, and he
- 23:25Speaker 1: does interview her. But for Eisen, it's crazy how things
- 23:30Speaker 1: come full circle. He was fired by ESPN, which is
- 23:32Speaker 1: crazy in two thousand and three, and a week later
- 23:35Speaker 1: the NFL network picks him up. Okay, well, but he
- 23:40Speaker 1: went through that run when Keith and like during the
- 23:43Speaker 1: legendary time of when Keith and Dan were there and
- 23:45Speaker 1: Bob Lee and so many others, right, and he interviews
- 23:53Speaker 1: Dan Patrick, Chris Berman, Mike Greenberg, Linda Own, Craig Kilbourne
- 24:01Speaker 1: and I've watched them all and for me, it's nostalgia.
- 24:05Speaker 1: It's changed my life. It may sound it did. It's
- 24:08Speaker 1: the Sports Center from the nineties is some of the
- 24:12Speaker 1: reason why I get to do sports radio and sports
- 24:15Speaker 1: marketing for a living. I was glued to it. I
- 24:18Speaker 1: watched it religiously. I would watch it throughout the night
- 24:21Speaker 1: when I came home from bartending or going out or
- 24:23Speaker 1: what I was doing. And then what was great is
- 24:25Speaker 1: the next morning you can watch it again. Isaen makes
- 24:27Speaker 1: a great point. He goes, today, you can't do it
- 24:30Speaker 1: because we have phones. They would tape the one in
- 24:33Speaker 1: two o'clock am, Stu Scott. I'm just this is for example,
- 24:38Speaker 1: Stu Scott and Rich Eisen. They would tape. They would
- 24:41Speaker 1: do it excuse me, one am and two am live,
- 24:45Speaker 1: and then they would run it from eight am to
- 24:49Speaker 1: noon several hours later. Today, you can't do that all
- 24:53Speaker 1: right now, I can run a segment that we do
- 24:56Speaker 1: because like Mike Ntilllier, what he just did is timeless.
- 24:58Speaker 1: This is different. It's a highlights show of Sports Center
- 25:02Speaker 1: going through what the Lakers and the Knicks did last night,
- 25:06Speaker 1: daily highlight right. But Eisen had Craig Kilbourne on, and
- 25:13Speaker 1: Craig Kilbourne was one of my favorite people who eventually
- 25:17Speaker 1: left to go do late night TV, which made a
- 25:20Speaker 1: lot of sense. And that's what he wanted to do.
- 25:22Speaker 1: In fact, he talks about it. He wanted out, not
- 25:25Speaker 1: that he didn't enjoy it and it wasn't a good experience.
- 25:27Speaker 1: None of them wanted to really live in Hartford or Bristol, Connecticut.
- 25:32Speaker 1: And that's crazy that it's now they're allowing people to
- 25:35Speaker 1: do other things. Rich Eisen's going to stay in LA
- 25:38Speaker 1: even though ESPN bought the NFL Network. And that's what
- 25:41Speaker 1: I was talking about coming full circle. He was fired
- 25:44Speaker 1: in OH three, yet he was part of that real
- 25:46Speaker 1: mega popular crew before the world got splintered and fractured
- 25:51Speaker 1: where you were going to watch Sports Center and Dan
- 25:54Speaker 1: and Keith in any number of guys. He gets fired
- 25:57Speaker 1: and O three and then last year they bring him back,
- 26:01Speaker 1: and so his show is on ESPN and he's doing
- 26:03Speaker 1: other things, and of course he'll still be on the
- 26:05Speaker 1: NFL Network doing the pregame show, which is a really
- 26:08Speaker 1: good show. But when he's on with Kilbourn, they're going
- 26:14Speaker 1: back and forth on what all happened in nineteen ninety
- 26:17Speaker 1: six nineteen ninety seven Sports Center, and they talk about
- 26:22Speaker 1: just how competitive it was. You know, you had the
- 26:26Speaker 1: first team with Keith and Dan and then Keith Leaves
- 26:28Speaker 1: and everybody wanted what they this is how they refer
- 26:32Speaker 1: to it in that group. Everybody wanted Keith's chair. They
- 26:36Speaker 1: wanted to be by Dan in the prime Sports Center right,
- 26:43Speaker 1: and Stu Scott got mad at Rich Eisen because Rich
- 26:51Speaker 1: went for it, he went for the chair. They ended
- 26:55Speaker 1: up making the wrong Like as talented as al Jafi
- 26:58Speaker 1: is and he's arguably, no, he's not. Arguably he's one
- 27:01Speaker 1: of the most top three or four most talented evaluators.
- 27:07Speaker 1: And I was able to identify talent in the history
- 27:10Speaker 1: of sports broadcasts because Jeoffi's the one that found Rich
- 27:14Speaker 1: Eisen and Kilbourne and many many others that joined that team.
- 27:20Speaker 1: But they put Kenny Maine in that chair. But Stu
- 27:22Speaker 1: Scott said, we were going to be the team. Well,
- 27:25Speaker 1: they eventually stayed together because they passed on Rich Eisen
- 27:28Speaker 1: and they gave it to Kenny Maine and whatever. But
- 27:32Speaker 1: if you if you lived or loved Sports Center in
- 27:34Speaker 1: the nineties, you'll love the Rich Eyesen This is Sports
- 27:38Speaker 1: Center podcast that you can find on YouTube for the
- 27:43Speaker 1: ESPN app. Dan Patrick really opened up about you know
- 27:48Speaker 1: the whole thing. It's funny that management never liked Dan
- 27:52Speaker 1: and Keith, yet they were making them one hundred million
- 27:55Speaker 1: dollars a year when that was like big money for
- 27:56Speaker 1: media back in ninety two, ninety three and ninety four
- 28:00Speaker 1: ninety five.
- 28:01Speaker 5: And.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And all the things that they fought. But what they
- 28:06Speaker 1: did was they did a looser It wasn't a it
- 28:13Speaker 1: wasn't a Dan Rather broadcast. I mean straight, I'm gonna
- 28:17Speaker 1: read straight from the thing. You know, here's the news
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm delivering, Walter crunkit. They they did it different, looser, fun,
- 28:27Speaker 1: pop culture comedy, and that's that's why took America by storm. Anyway,
- 28:35Speaker 1: I recommend it all right, and I am I'm actually rewatching.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I've watched the Dan Patrick whin twice and the Craig
- 28:42Speaker 1: Kilbourn twice. The green Berg win was fascinating to me too.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I know a lot of people love to hate Mike Greenberg,
- 28:49Speaker 1: but when you've been somewhere for thirty years on national TV,
- 28:52Speaker 1: on a national show for that long, you can say
- 28:56Speaker 1: what you want about him. Whatever. He understands how to
- 28:59Speaker 1: host and keep a show moving and going with multiple guests,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and it's it's not it's not easy. He's he's very talented.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I get he's got that Northeast New York stick. Oh,
- 29:10Speaker 1: that's why they don't like him. I don't. Well, there's
- 29:12Speaker 1: any number of reasons why people don't like any of
- 29:14Speaker 1: us but the green But my point is this, it
- 29:19Speaker 1: was a damn good interview between eisen And and Greenberg,
- 29:25Speaker 1: and it helped me learn more about the craft and
- 29:29Speaker 1: behind the scenes. So, but Craig Kilbourne's my guy. I
- 29:33Speaker 1: just thought he was hilarious from the jump, and then
- 29:35Speaker 1: he went, you know, to Late night TV. He did
- 29:38Speaker 1: the soup thing and Comedy Channel whatever, and then he
- 29:42Speaker 1: did Late Night TV. It worked out for him. But
- 29:44Speaker 1: evidently he teased that he's got something coming up, so
- 29:46Speaker 1: I'll see what. We'll see what killboard. Maybe he says
- 29:50Speaker 1: it's gonna be a twenty twenty seven project, and we'll
- 29:53Speaker 1: see what he's got coming up. I hope he jumps in.
- 29:56Speaker 1: We'll switch gears. The Out of Bounds Show is ESPN
- 29:59Speaker 1: one oh five.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Now.
- 30:00Speaker 1: The Zone is brought to you by Ford Plumbing and Air.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Call them today. If your air conditioning's not working, you're miserable,
- 30:07Speaker 1: Call Ford. They'll make you happy. Ford Plumbing and Air.
- 30:10Speaker 1: If your indoor plumbing's not working. That's misery. Right, they'll
- 30:15Speaker 1: make you happy. Call Ford Plumbing in Air today. They're
- 30:18Speaker 1: located in Ridgeland, they're locally owned and they do great work.
- 30:21Speaker 1: All right, you were talking about Charlie Weiss Junior as
- 30:24Speaker 1: a possible replace. Levy may turn this around. It could
- 30:28Speaker 1: happen again. Sam Pittman won nine games at Arkansas, Sylvester
- 30:34Speaker 1: Chrome won eight games at Mississippi State, and Beamer won
- 30:38Speaker 1: nine or ten at South Carolina a couple of years ago.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Although he's on the warm seat this year, he may
- 30:42Speaker 1: not be on the hot seat. And I don't know
- 30:44Speaker 1: where they are as far as their athletic director, but
- 30:48Speaker 1: I will say he made a hell of a higher
- 30:51Speaker 1: terrible timing for Mississippi State because they haven't had an
- 30:56Speaker 1: offensive coordinator under Beamer since he's been there. Kendall Brow's
- 31:00Speaker 1: is going to make Leonora's sellers. I tell you what,
- 31:02Speaker 1: if he had the same offensive coordinator talent level that
- 31:05Speaker 1: he's had the last five years of being in Columbia,
- 31:09Speaker 1: then I would say Mississippi State could go there and
- 31:12Speaker 1: win with Kendall Brows and Lenora's sellers. Knowing that Shane's
- 31:17Speaker 1: had a really good defensive coordinator for the last few
- 31:19Speaker 1: years with Clayton White. Don't like that scenario. Back to
- 31:23Speaker 1: what Levy could do. You know, Shane won nine or ten.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Sam Pittman won nine, Sylvester Kroume won eight. You know,
- 31:30Speaker 1: you know the drill. I mean Joe Morehead, even though
- 31:33Speaker 1: he had a tremendous amount of talent, was able to
- 31:35Speaker 1: win seven games back to back years at Mississippi State.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I think maybe eight one year and seven the other
- 31:43Speaker 1: I don't remember. He got embarrassed in both bowl games.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I was at one, the out Back Ball the other
- 31:48Speaker 1: one was the Music City Bowl. But Levy could turn
- 31:51Speaker 1: the corner. But y'all are texting me about Charlie Weiss, don't.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I don't think you can go there because and I
- 31:58Speaker 1: say that Weiss junior two years from now. Maybe like
- 32:00Speaker 1: the dude, I mean, he may take like a beamer
- 32:04Speaker 1: doesn't get it done. South Carolina could do that because
- 32:06Speaker 1: they haven't done what Mississippi State's done, If that makes sense.
- 32:09Speaker 1: The bottom line is when you've done you know, the
- 32:12Speaker 1: fact that you went back to the same well as
- 32:16Speaker 1: Joe Moorehead's resume and Jeff Levy's resume, I mean just
- 32:21Speaker 1: about identical. I know Morehead had been Division two head
- 32:25Speaker 1: coach for a minute or two, but I just don't
- 32:29Speaker 1: think that's going to pass because you don't know really
- 32:35Speaker 1: how often Lane has allowed Why Junior to drive the
- 32:41Speaker 1: Lamborghini by himself. It's just different. I mean, when you're
- 32:48Speaker 1: flying the Boeing seven forty seven with another co pilot
- 32:52Speaker 1: or two, it's different than if it's just you, you know,
- 32:59Speaker 1: and sooh. It's already a lot of risk for anybody.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I mean, Pete Golding is a ton of risk in ox.
- 33:05Speaker 1: You just don't know that. It's the unknown. We have
- 33:09Speaker 1: no idea how good Pete Golding's going to be as
- 33:13Speaker 1: a head coach, but he walked into different circumstances. He's
- 33:18Speaker 1: got a phenomenal roster, and he's been a decordinator for
- 33:24Speaker 1: several years. Levy again only an if that'sive coordinator for
- 33:28Speaker 1: two years. I don't think you can do the Charlie
- 33:31Speaker 1: Weiss thing. Charlie Weis junior who's the OC at LSU
- 33:34Speaker 1: getting paid two and a half million dollars. I don't
- 33:36Speaker 1: think you're going to have to go and get a
- 33:38Speaker 1: G five coach who's twenty six and twelve, who showed
- 33:44Speaker 1: wherever this is, X, Y and Z university. I've won.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I've at least been doing this for a few years. Three.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Preferably if you find someone with four or five six
- 33:56Speaker 1: years under their belt, great. We forget Kiff and fell
- 33:59Speaker 1: in his face mut couple of times. Now he's top
- 34:01Speaker 1: five in the country, you know, so sometimes sometimes it
- 34:10Speaker 1: it works. I mean, so you're talking about oh, which
- 34:12Speaker 1: is why we need to drop the Signetti. Thank you Jackson,
- 34:15Speaker 1: you mentioned it twice. You're in the break, So I'll
- 34:19Speaker 1: tie this in to if you think you're going to
- 34:23Speaker 1: have to make a change in your program in the
- 34:25Speaker 1: next couple of years. This is what Kurt Signetti had
- 34:29Speaker 1: to say on why he left the Alabama Crimson Tide
- 34:34Speaker 1: Saban staff to take a D two job.
- 34:37Speaker 5: You make a big decision to leave coach sabans Alabama
- 34:40Speaker 5: staff to take a head coaching job and to go
- 34:43Speaker 5: down to the Division two level. What was it that
- 34:45Speaker 5: made you confident in yourself that hey, it's time to
- 34:47Speaker 5: do better myself, go down a level and take a
- 34:50Speaker 5: head coaching job.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I just had to be a head coach.
- 34:52Speaker 6: I didn't want to finish up as a career assistant.
- 34:54Speaker 6: It was a nonprecedented move, and I know that it
- 34:56Speaker 6: was a lifestyle change. At the time too, I was
- 34:58Speaker 6: enjoying life in Indiana. We won a lot of games,
- 35:01Speaker 6: and near the end, I felt like I had a
- 35:03Speaker 6: couple of national championship teams ready to go, and then
- 35:05Speaker 6: Elon called, nobody thought you could win there and their
- 35:07Speaker 6: track record worse than Indiana, And we rattle off eight
- 35:10Speaker 6: in a row and beat JMU. The next year up
- 35:13Speaker 6: at JMU, and then took the JMU job. That job
- 35:15Speaker 6: was a winner, but we improved them by six games
- 35:17Speaker 6: year one. So year one We've always had big turn
- 35:19Speaker 6: rounds and I loved that place and I had no
- 35:22Speaker 6: intention of leave in Indiana.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Call.
- 35:24Speaker 6: It was quick process. I think by the time I
- 35:26Speaker 6: came here, I just had a lot of confidence and
- 35:28Speaker 6: belief because we've won all our championships.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Yeah, a couple of things that jump out at me there.
- 35:38Speaker 1: When you you have to have supreme confidence in your
- 35:44Speaker 1: ability to go down, coaches don't go down. You do
- 35:48Speaker 1: know that coaches don't move down. They don't do that.
- 35:52Speaker 1: They don't have to. Like if you'd have been on
- 35:55Speaker 1: a saving staff that got fired at Alabama. Then if
- 35:58Speaker 1: Indiana Pad two is the only thing that you got,
- 36:01Speaker 1: you got to feed mom and the kids. Right, So
- 36:05Speaker 1: it was an unprecedented move, like he said, right, because
- 36:10Speaker 1: he was also watching Alabama assistance take you know, head
- 36:15Speaker 1: coaching jobs or getting moved up to coordinator positions there
- 36:20Speaker 1: somewhere else. Then after he goes to Indiana PA and
- 36:25Speaker 1: proves that he can win Jackson, he goes to Elon
- 36:29Speaker 1: and wins eight in a row one year. Now, if
- 36:31Speaker 1: you don't think, I hope you understand how difficult it
- 36:34Speaker 1: is to win eight games in a row in football.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I mean it's difficult in basketball, and it's difficult in baseball,
- 36:40Speaker 1: but we see it more. I mean, you play thirty
- 36:41Speaker 1: five games in college basketball, you play fifty six games
- 36:44Speaker 1: in college baseball, a little bit different deal. Still difficult
- 36:47Speaker 1: eight games in football, especially at a place with I
- 36:51Speaker 1: would think no scholarships are very limited and no doubt
- 36:57Speaker 1: limited resources. I mean, this guy to jump from INDIANAPA
- 37:01Speaker 1: to Elon, that's you're still there's no money, there's no resources,
- 37:07Speaker 1: there's no boosters, there's no attendance, nobody cares. And yet
- 37:12Speaker 1: he's grinding, working, focused on his craft and just winning.
- 37:17Speaker 1: And then he goes to James Madison and basically wins
- 37:20Speaker 1: ninety one percents games. By the way, Scott Dowson, let's
- 37:26Speaker 1: just go ahead and say he owns the state of Indiana.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Indiana Vice President and director of Athletics, Scott Dolson, it's
- 37:35Speaker 1: the one that hired Kurt Signetti. Indiana was coming off
- 37:41Speaker 1: a nine and twenty seven stretch over three seasons, a
- 37:45Speaker 1: dead program by Big ten standards. Signetti had just gone
- 37:52Speaker 1: forty eight and nine. You think that's hard and colle it,
- 37:56Speaker 1: I don't care what level and football hot forty eight
- 37:59Speaker 1: and nine at James Madison and elon, including going nineteen
- 38:04Speaker 1: and one at one point, Scott Dowson sold Indiana as
- 38:13Speaker 1: a sleeping giant, That's what he said. He also helped
- 38:20Speaker 1: Signetti remember this. Remember it helps when an athletic director
- 38:28Speaker 1: walks hand in hand with that coach. Especially early. He said,
- 38:34Speaker 1: I'm not here to just hire you and give you
- 38:36Speaker 1: the keys. I'm here to walk with you and be
- 38:39Speaker 1: there along the way. And they got after it. Also,
- 38:44Speaker 1: Signetti focused on the portal his first month on the job.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Greg Byrne always told me the first month on the
- 38:51Speaker 1: job a lot of the time, majority of the time
- 38:54Speaker 1: decides whether you're going to make it or not. Signetti
- 38:59Speaker 1: in these interviews talked about how ninety nine percent of
- 39:02Speaker 1: his focus in the first recruiting cycle was portal. Ninety
- 39:08Speaker 1: percent of Jeff Levy's focus was signing a high school class,
- 39:17Speaker 1: and nobody told him different either that would have helped. Yeah,
- 39:21Speaker 1: what did Greg Byrne do when he hired Dan Mullenyall
- 39:24Speaker 1: y'all know the answer. He walked with him. He told Dan,
- 39:29Speaker 1: you will hire veteran assistance on this staff like Les
- 39:32Speaker 1: Kannig and Carl Torbusch and Mark Hudspeth who were tremendous help.
- 39:36Speaker 1: And this is before you had ninety seven quality control
- 39:39Speaker 1: guys and other things in the building. I mean, Dan's
- 39:44Speaker 1: first couple of years of staff would have looked, you know,
- 39:49Speaker 1: ghost like compared to there's nine hundred people in Levy's
- 39:52Speaker 1: building today, but you know, used to high school quarterback Baltimore,
- 40:02Speaker 1: Maryland and Mario Krab and Stalker and JJ Harrell and
- 40:10Speaker 1: do any of them have marunal them?
- 40:12Speaker 5: No?
- 40:14Speaker 1: And Signatty talks about how we knew ninety nine percent
- 40:18Speaker 1: of our focus at not one hundred had to be
- 40:20Speaker 1: the portal. He brought thirteen players with him. I think
- 40:24Speaker 1: nine of them started in year one at Indiana colemen
- 40:29Speaker 1: Hudser didn't bring one player with him. All this sidden hard.
- 40:39Speaker 1: You made it hard. But you know, there are so
- 40:45Speaker 1: many things that I could share on the left and
- 40:51Speaker 1: right screw up. So but anybody should have known that
- 40:58Speaker 1: took that job that year or the next year, or
- 41:01Speaker 1: last year or this year. Hey, my first four weeks
- 41:04Speaker 1: on the ground got to be portal. Yeah, got to
- 41:07Speaker 1: be portal because we got to get when you're going.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I mean there are exceptions, like Lane leaves to go
- 41:16Speaker 1: to a top three job in the country, so he
- 41:18Speaker 1: leaves a healthy but usually when you're replacing someone, they
- 41:23Speaker 1: weren't even good like Signetti. You know Signetti indi Ena
- 41:28Speaker 1: was nine and twenty seven prior to his arrival. But
- 41:32Speaker 1: they didn't make excuses like some people. Signetti didn't blame
- 41:35Speaker 1: the former coach or athletic director or whoever. And Greg
- 41:40Speaker 1: Byrne and Dan Mullen didn't blame the disaster that they inherited.
- 41:44Speaker 1: You never heard them. You heard Krome and Larry Templeton
- 41:47Speaker 1: talk throw Sheryl and so on under the bus. It
- 41:50Speaker 1: was time and time again. Okay, remember, don't ever forget
- 41:55Speaker 1: Mullen and Burn never mentioned Kroom or lt in the public.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I mean they may have from the donors at dinner.
- 42:05Speaker 1: My god, this is an absolute dysfunctional disaster. But but
- 42:10Speaker 1: you know that's to me. You know, you got to go.
- 42:15Speaker 1: You can't be rearview mirror. You got to be Winshield.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Signetti was Winshield, and so was Scott god Scott owns
- 42:24Speaker 1: the state, Scott Dowson in the NAVP and director of athletics. Yeah,
- 42:30Speaker 1: so they've gone twenty seven and two since he took over.
- 42:35Speaker 2: There.
- 42:36Speaker 1: What but he was forty eight and nine. This is crazy.
- 42:39Speaker 1: They were nine and twenty seven before he got there.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Mm hmm. That Signetti's got there? Is there a Kurt
