Transcript
- 1:16If you're going to fantasize about how much better your future could be, then go ahead and make it a reality.
- 1:22That's a quote from possibly the greatest manga of all time, One Piece.
- 1:27Today we are doing another episode of the Faces Behind Us, looking specifically at the One Piece manga, the Faces behind Luffy, the faces behind the straw Hats, how Luffy is an inspiration to others.
- 1:37We're talking about Ace, Sabo, Koby, Garp, Monkey, D Dragon.
- 1:42It's gonna be a long one, probably.
- 1:44It's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 1:45That's what it's gonna be.
- 1:46I am one of your hosts, Joshua Noel, here with two of the greatest co hosts ever.
- 1:51I'm gonna introduce Liz first, because me and her are probably both gonna be relying on our other co host to know a lot.
- 1:56So, Liz, welcome back.
- 1:58I think it's.
- 1:59It's been a minute.
- 2:00Yeah, baby.
- 2:01Zuko's now in the picture.
- 2:02Yeah.
- 2:03All right.
- 2:03The first one speaking, the Faces Behind.
- 2:07He's now the new inspiration for the podcast.
- 2:09We're changing the logo to just a picture of him.
- 2:11Also, his name isn't Zuko, but for me, it is just so the listeners know.
- 2:16Yeah, yeah.
- 2:17But we're also here with the one who created podcast many, many years ago, the creator of One Piece.
- 2:24What's his name?
- 2:25TJ Blackwell.
- 2:26Yeah.
- 2:27He got together with tj and when he created Podcast is also when One Piece came into being.
- 2:33It actually wasn't created.
- 2:34It just formed magically.
- 2:36Yeah.
- 2:36So, tj, welcome to your own show.
- 2:37Yeah, thank you.
- 2:38Yeah.
- 2:39Ichiro Oda and I go way back.
- 2:40Yeah, yeah.
- 2:41That's actually just one of your alternative names.
- 2:44He has a few.
- 2:45Yeah.
- 2:45When I.
- 2:47When I finally discover that one of his other name.
- 2:54When one of TJ's other names is.
- 2:57I try to remember how to say it.
- 2:58Tetsuo Nomura.
- 2:59I give up.
- 3:00I quit at that point.
- 3:03Yeah, it's coming.
- 3:05But until then, we are excited to do another episode of Faces behind it with you guys.
- 3:10Before we do, we do like to shout out what we've been geeking out on recently.
- 3:14I don't know if this is coming out before or after theology Beer Camp 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri.
- 3:19But if it's before, controlling tickets, if it's after.
- 3:22Wait a minute.
- 3:22Those episodes will release that we recorded live there.
- 3:25And in preparation for a panel I'm doing.
- 3:27Because I'm a crazy person, I always go, like, way too far to prepare.
- 3:32I'm just playing all of Bioshock and also reading a Full novel that I think TJ and I are going to do an all Reading Counts episode about.
- 3:38So I'm hardcore geeking out on Bioshock because I had a kidney stone and I had time for it.
- 3:42Great games.
- 3:43Great games.
- 3:44Yeah, I wish I had a kidney stone.
- 3:46What have you been geeking out?
- 3:47How to form kidney stone if you just drink a lot of monster.
- 3:50You know, the best news is this is.
- 3:52This is for a Drinks for Tejas episode later on.
- 3:54The bad news is I have to drink less caffeine, more water.
- 3:58Good news is citrus helps.
- 4:00Doctor said if I drink more orange juice, it'll help a lot.
- 4:02I have no problem with that.
- 4:04The good news is that the doctor can't actually make you do that.
- 4:08Yeah, but I'll take an excuse to drink more orange juice.
- 4:12What have you been geeking out?
- 4:14Nothing.
- 4:15I've been working.
- 4:17He's been geeking out on getting ready for hockey and also Disney World.
- 4:21Actually, I don't know if you're going to Disney World.
- 4:23Orlando starts today.
- 4:25We are very much not going to Disney World.
- 4:28Yeah, we're going to Epic Universe, and we're going to Islands and Universe.
- 4:34He's gonna go to Disney World with me next year, though.
- 4:36We just haven't planned it at all, but it's fine.
- 4:38Liz, what have you been geeking out on?
- 4:40Well, besides my son.
- 4:42I have been watching, though I am an inept villainess.
- 4:47I think it's a Chinese anime.
- 4:50And Zuko has been.
- 4:51Oh, that's true.
- 4:53No, I have.
- 4:54I've been reading a manga called Destroy All Humans.
- 4:57They cannot be regenerated.
- 4:59You know, weirdly enough, I've heard of that.
- 5:00It's a.
- 5:00It's a Magic the Gathering rom com.
- 5:03I think I've heard of it from Mark Flower, of all people.
- 5:06It's pretty good.
- 5:08Yeah, Zuko's also, I assume, geeking out on the Last Airbender, as he should.
- 5:13I still haven't seen that movie.
- 5:15Well, we've been watching one piece together, like the og.
- 5:20As long as he doesn't start thinking that he's Zorro, because that's tj.
- 5:24But for you guys listening, if you like our random banter and ramblings, rate and review our show, wherever you get your podcast, it helps people notice the show.
- 5:33It does something with algorithms so that people think our show matters, which helps us get the word out to more people, which maybe eventually will lead to us being able to do more podcasts and less other things.
- 5:43Yeah, which also helps when we have financial supporters.
- 5:46So we're going to shout out one of our financial supporters today, Jonathan Augustin Urocman.
- 5:51Really excited to see him actually at Theology Beer Camp.
- 5:55So I'm really sad to not see him.
- 5:57I'm sorry.
- 5:58I mean not because you don't want to see him, but you're just excited.
- 6:01Yeah, I'm sad that I don't get to because I did last year in school.
- 6:05One year DJ and I will both attend and it'll probably be the last beer camp.
- 6:09And I'm sorry, Tripp.
- 6:10I think it'll just put an end to it somehow.
- 6:13It'll be our fault.
- 6:14But guys, remember, if you want your own shout out like Jonathan, you can become an official member of Systematic Ecology by going to our website.
- 6:20The link is in the show's description.
- 6:22Same website.
- 6:23You can get other merch and get bonus episodes.
- 6:26You can get just free extra content just cuz definitely worth your time.
- 6:31Even if you don't feel like becoming a member.
- 6:32You can leave a one time tip.
- 6:34You also can get the official T shirt of the Faces Behind Us.
- 6:38It's the only T shirt we have that I think looks especially good in purple.
- 6:41And a good purple T shirt's worth getting comfort color.
- 6:44So it's like super comfortable.
- 6:46You just, you know, don't you shout on it?
- 6:48That does ruin a comfort color shirt for those wondering, but totally worth it.
- 6:52Fun design, good color, really comfortable.
- 6:55Helps the show a whole lot.
- 6:56If you want to see more of the Faces Behind Us series, you can check out our entire annual theme.
- 7:02There's a link in the show description for that as well.
- 7:03A lot of links down there, a lot of ways to follow us, to just be a part of all the geeky goodness.
- 7:07So, you know, we do this for community and we hope you consider joining us in more than one way, more than just listening, you know.
- 7:14Yeah.
- 7:14But for now, it's time to jump into today's episode where we're going to be talking One Piece.
- 7:20So throw it to Liz.
- 7:23She seems knowledgeable.
- 7:25If no one's ever somehow never seen One Piece, what is One Piece?
- 7:29And why did we think this was a good fit for the Face of the Pine Dust series?
- 7:32Well, One Piece is about a pirate named Luffy who, I mean really on paper, he's not what is your typical pirate and he just loves going on adventures and eating meat and finds a lot of other misfits that
- 7:44have big dreams and they're like, we're all going to do our big dreams together and be pirates.
- 7:49Even though we're going to do so much good and not bad and fight the military.
- 7:53So that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
- 7:55And, I mean, the faces behind us, I mean, as I just said, he's not your typical pirate.
- 7:59He's kind of a goofball, and so, like an onion, they all have layers.
- 8:04Yeah.
- 8:05Yeah.
- 8:05It's also.
- 8:06It's a really good choice for the Faces behind us because of its longevity.
- 8:11Most of anything, most things, most intellectual properties have not had this same kind of length of life.
- 8:20So it's kind of easy to see the faces behind the characters because we literally have seen them, you know, 30 years ago.
- 8:31It just makes it pretty simple.
- 8:32We don't have to go to outside sources, be like, well, this is the character that inspired whoever.
- 8:38You know, it's not like reading literature.
- 8:40It's like, oh, well, this is clearly inspired by Ishmael from Moby Dick.
- 8:44Yeah, that's in one piece, too, but that's not necessary in this case.
- 8:49Yeah, yeah, two.
- 8:51I think it helps that, like, I think it would help everybody if they would stop and listen to an episode of the Whole Church podcast TJ and I did with.
- 8:57I can't remember the guy's name who wrote a book about radical theology in pirates.
- 9:02And a lot of that explores how piracy comes up because certain forms of capitalism or governance actually fail us.
- 9:09And then it's like, what is the Christian response to that?
- 9:11So it was a fun episode.
- 9:12I'll try to link that below with the name of the guy who wrote that book, because it's escaping me at the moment, but really good read.
- 9:19I think it was a good episode of that podcast that we did.
- 9:22And I think it shows what happens in one piece because it starts off with just this kid who's like, I'm gonna be King of the Pirates, because that sounds cool.
- 9:27And he's like, yeah, I want a big treasure.
- 9:29And you're like, I think you're just a treasure hunter, dude.
- 9:31And you go on, and you see how the government continuously is failing people.
- 9:34And the people he's recruiting are like, heck, yeah, let's stand up against the government, which is an act of piracy.
- 9:39They're stealing from the government, but the government's corrupt.
- 9:41So it's kind of pretty thickly nuanced, especially because some of the Marines, some of the government, aren't all bad.
- 9:46So it's like.
- 9:47And you know what?
- 9:48That's real life.
- 9:49A lot of the times, you know, it's.
- 9:51It would be convenient to me to be anti government because Donald Trump is evil.
- 9:55But there are a lot of people in the government who are doing good, a lot more good than me being on the Internet, rambling about how one person is bad.
- 10:01So it's kind of like, pick your poison.
- 10:04Luffy happens to be powerful enough that he can just straight up stand up to people, so it's a little bit easier for him.
- 10:10Yeah, he could actually be doing much more.
- 10:13He could.
- 10:13He could just be killing people.
- 10:15He could be killing a lot of the people in power probably at this.
- 10:19Point, even to an extent.
- 10:21But he won't because that's.
- 10:22That's not in his character.
- 10:24He's not a utilitarian Christian.
- 10:25Ashley.
- 10:26Anyway, I just like to pick on Christian.
- 10:32I don't know why.
- 10:32I mean, I do know why.
- 10:33It's fun.
- 10:34But he's not here, so I'll move on.
- 10:36I want to talk some about over our personal experiences with this ip.
- 10:40It's easy for two thirds of this because Liz is kind of why I'm into it.
- 10:44A mutual friend of ours got into it because of her, and then he watched it.
- 10:47And I don't do anime, but he's like, you have to watch it because you're the main character.
- 10:51And I was iffy because it's anime.
- 10:53And I didn't really want to get into anime because when I was younger, it wasn't as cool as it is now, I feel like.
- 10:57And also, I just spent all my time playing the same video games over and over.
- 11:01I'm still mad it's popular.
- 11:02Like, I had to be a nerd growing up, and now being a nerd is cool.
- 11:07Yeah.
- 11:07But, yeah, by the time I was growing up, it was like, it was pretty normal, but it wasn't popular.
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:14So, I mean, I got into it because, like, Luffy was punching someone for doing backstories, and I'm like, heck, yeah.
- 11:18Let's just get to the beat of it.
- 11:20Which is funny because now they don't do that as much.
- 11:23But, like, I got to do it as that because he wants meat and he's just playful and fun.
- 11:27And then as you get into it, I feel like the more emotional strokes really pulled me along.
- 11:30You see how everything happened on Drum Drum island with Chopper, and then I see Luffy and Chopper's friendship, and then I've been hooked since.
- 11:38I think that was really the moment where I was like, this is top peak fandom for me.
- 11:43But yeah.
- 11:43Liz, did you want to shout out how you first got into it?
- 11:46I just watched any and all anime, and I think I Saw it airing on.
- 11:51Gosh.
- 11:51I don't know which platform it aired off of, but I think it was like on a Saturday morning or something.
- 11:55That was it.
- 11:56Four Kids.
- 11:57That's it.
- 11:58Four Kids.
- 11:59Where Sanji had a lollipop instead of a cigarette, which is still correct.
- 12:05All right.
- 12:05Yep.
- 12:06And the guns were like hammers.
- 12:08The guns were like code name Kids Next door doohickeys.
- 12:11Gosh.
- 12:11I just.
- 12:13I just know when I.
- 12:14When the Internet became more attainable and I was able to binge it from first episode to now is what a treat for the kids today.
- 12:23They don't know the week by week.
- 12:26My first year of college largely was catching up on this and Supernatural, because Supernatural is on season five.
- 12:32And I just got introduced to it from.
- 12:34Who's now my best friend, who was just some guy who moved me into my room at college at the point at that time.
- 12:38But TJ, how old is this anime now?
- 12:4120.
- 12:4227?
- 12:43Yeah.
- 12:44So as old as I am, I was.
- 12:46It's not as old as I am.
- 12:48You're 27, y'.
- 12:49All.
- 12:49TJ's still much younger.
- 12:50In my mind, I'm still like, TJ just turned 21.
- 12:54Think about TJ.
- 12:56He's had many faces growing up.
- 12:57So of course this anime would too.
- 12:59With even more characters.
- 13:01Yeah.
- 13:01Speaking of.
- 13:02It's wild.
- 13:03Speaking of.
- 13:04I want to go ahead and get to the main characters.
- 13:07We want to focus on today.
- 13:09So we're going to be talking a lot about Garp, Kind of like a dad to Luffy.
- 13:12I mean, is a dad to Luffy, but not his biological dad, Monkey D Dragon, his biological dad, Ace and Sabo, Luffy's brothers.
- 13:20And we'll talk about the Straw Hat Pirates, how the other pirates in Luffy's crew are actually inspired by Luffy.
- 13:25And then we'll talk some about Koby, how Luffy and Koby are kind of like a iron serpent's iron, I think.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:30So we have a lot to go through.
- 13:32Hard to get through them all.
- 13:33But we'll.
- 13:33We'll do our best to keep it punctual, you know?
- 13:37Yeah.
- 13:37We'll let TJ talk a lot.
- 13:39That's what we're trying to say.
- 13:40Yeah.
- 13:41So with that, first up is Garp, father figure to Luffy, who I feel like was treated pretty differently in the live action version.
- 13:50But I think necessarily so.
- 13:51And it was pretty cool.
- 13:52But anyway, tj, who's Garp?
- 13:54Garp is not an admiral.
- 13:58What was his peak rank was Vice Admiral.
- 14:01Vice Admiral.
- 14:02He peaked at Vice Admiral.
- 14:04He's a Marine.
- 14:06Strong, legendarily powerful Marine in the ethos of One Piece.
- 14:11He's the marine that fought Gold Roger to a standstill.
- 14:15Whatever.
- 14:16Super powerful guy.
- 14:17And he is Luffy's brother's dad.
- 14:22Granddad.
- 14:23Biologically.
- 14:24Yeah.
- 14:25And that kind of, you know.
- 14:27Luffy being in the situation he was in where his father wasn't really present and his mother doesn't exist.
- 14:34Has Oda ever said anything about Luffy's mom?
- 14:37It's Crocodile.
- 14:38Just that we've seen her, but we don't know who she is.
- 14:41Right.
- 14:42Yeah.
- 14:42It's Crocodile.
- 14:43It's Crocodile.
- 14:45We're fully on board the Trans Crocodile Train.
- 14:47Listen, I.
- 14:48I like when a fandom rage.
- 14:50Baits its fans.
- 14:50You know.
- 14:52I'm hoping that's what it's pretty.
- 14:53It's.
- 14:53It's such a.
- 14:54It's a pretty funny theory.
- 14:55Yeah, it's pretty.
- 14:56And it'd be so funny.
- 14:57Listen, with everything that Cross guilds happen, I'm not putting anything off the table at this point.
- 15:01Buggy's gonna find the One Piece Crocodile is Luffy's dad.
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:05Yeah.
- 15:06Mom.
- 15:07Thank you.
- 15:07Yeah.
- 16:37So Garp just kind of was there for Luffy when he needed a father figure.
- 16:41He was never super present because he was super busy fighting, you know, being a marine in the golden age of piracy.
- 16:49But that is the role he served.
- 16:50And as Ace's father, like the real pirate's dad.
- 16:57He was there.
- 16:58He was there for him.
- 16:59And he was there when Ace died.
- 17:02Yeah.
- 17:02Which I think is a big moment for trying to see who Luffy is.
- 17:07Just because you see how Garp wasn't going to be the one to executed Ace.
- 17:12But he understood his duty.
- 17:14He wasn't going to break his duty either.
- 17:15So he was kind of complacent.
- 17:18I consider that a fault.
- 17:19But I think that shows how he stands to his morals.
- 17:23Strong, steadfast.
- 17:25And Luffy has the same thing.
- 17:26Just without the Marine code.
- 17:28You know, he's not like, oh, I have to follow this hierarchy.
- 17:30But Luffy still, throughout all of the show.
- 17:33If it comes to being with his friends or not.
- 17:36Doesn't matter if it makes sense.
- 17:37Luffy is going to stand by his friends.
- 17:39That is his code.
- 17:41Yep.
- 17:41And Garp is still someone Monkey looks.
- 17:43Monkey.
- 17:44Luffy looks up to hell.
- 17:45Yeah.
- 17:46Like when they.
- 17:47When Garp was introduced to us, he was like Old Man Garp.
- 17:51What's he doing here?
- 17:52Yeah.
- 17:52He loves Garp.
- 17:53Even though they're like.
- 17:54It'd be.
- 17:55They definitely love each other.
- 17:56But they're Complete opposite sides of this conflict.
- 17:59Yeah.
- 18:00Liz, anything to add about Garp or Garp and Luffy's relationship?
- 18:03I mean, he's his granddad.
- 18:05Y' all keep on saying a father figure.
- 18:06That's pretty much.
- 18:08I mean, is he the father of Dragon?
- 18:11No, I don't think he's biologically related to Luffy.
- 18:13He's not biologically.
- 18:14Okay.
- 18:14I always just took Sabo or Ace's granddad, one of the two.
- 18:17I don't remember.
- 18:18Yes, we saw those, Granddad, because we know who Ace's father is.
- 18:21Yeah.
- 18:22Okay.
- 18:22True.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:23So Sabo's grandma.
- 18:24That sounds right.
- 18:26I always took it at base face value.
- 18:28I mean.
- 18:28But yeah, you're right.
- 18:29He raised them, so.
- 18:31And then, you know, you have his faces as the Vice Admiral, but then, you know Garp as, like, you know, his own man.
- 18:38And then Luffy's father figure.
- 18:40He's pretty fun.
- 18:41I like him.
- 18:42Yeah, I love Garp.
- 18:43I actually really loved him in the live action.
- 18:45I think they did really well, even though they changed some of the orders of When Things Happen.
- 18:50It was really cool seeing him in that season one.
- 18:52It was awesome.
- 18:53Yeah, they did.
- 18:53But no, Garb is.
- 18:54Garp is Luffy's.
- 18:56Garp is Luffy's grandpa.
- 18:58Oh, he is.
- 18:59Luffy's dad is Dragon.
- 19:00Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 19:02Okay.
- 19:02Yeah.
- 19:03Yeah, that's right.
- 19:03So he's.
- 19:04He's Monkey D Dragon.
- 19:06Roger is Ace's dad.
- 19:07So.
- 19:08Yeah.
- 19:08So he's biological.
- 19:10That's.
- 19:11So.
- 19:11Speaking of Monkey D Dragon, I was just gonna say you can see a lot of Luffy's personality in Garp, too.
- 19:17Like, as you watch the show.
- 19:19Yeah.
- 19:20Because Garp isn't just like, I stand by the rules.
- 19:22Grr.
- 19:22He laughs like, he has a fun time out there.
- 19:25He's enjoying himself.
- 19:26No, he has a great time.
- 19:28And when it's time to, you know, put the pedal to the metal, he rolls his sleeves up.
- 19:31He's like, I'm just gonna go over there and get this done.
- 19:34I'll just punch a crater into the earth.
- 19:36No big deal.
- 19:37Yeah, like when he.
- 19:38When he saves Kobe.
- 19:40So cool.
- 19:41Oh, wait.
- 19:42Actually, that event at Marineford influenced Garp because he was not gonna let that happen a second time.
- 19:49Like, he watched, you know, he watched Ace die and watched what that put Luffy through.
- 19:53He's like, I'm not letting that happen again.
- 19:55I'm going to save Kobe.
- 19:56Yeah.
- 19:56And he did it.
- 19:57It's great.
- 19:58So he is also the dad to Luffy's dad.
- 20:02His grandpa, Monkey D Dragon, Luffy's dad, who didn't go pirate, isn't Marines.
- 20:07He is just straight up a leading.
- 20:09I don't want to say terrorist group, but anti government revolutionary army.
- 20:13Revolutionary.
- 20:14I think it.
- 20:15It is exactly what it is.
- 20:16Yeah.
- 20:17That name is pretty straightforward.
- 20:18I guess it is.
- 20:20Which.
- 20:20He's kind of in the shadows.
- 20:21You don't know a lot about him till you get good way into the show.
- 20:24But tj, who's Monkey D Dragon, we.
- 20:26Still don't know a lot about him.
- 20:27Yeah.
- 20:27I mean, you didn't even see him until like halfway.
- 20:30Not even halfway through the show.
- 20:31I don't know.
- 20:32You didn't see him at all for a very long time.
- 20:34Hundreds of episodes, I think Longtown, but.
- 20:38And even then, it wasn't, hey, here's Dragon.
- 20:41It was just.
- 20:42It was just a random person who helped them escape.
- 20:45Yeah.
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:46So who is he?
- 20:48He's Luffy's dad.
- 20:49I don't think he belongs in this episode.
- 20:52Why?
- 20:53I don't.
- 20:54I don't think he influences Luffy at all.
- 20:57Because he's.
- 20:58Or anyone else really.
- 20:59He's worse of a father than Goku.
- 21:01I think his absence influences Luffy a lot.
- 21:05And I feel like Luffy knew that his dad was against the government.
- 21:08So I feel like it probably does influence him.
- 21:11It definitely influences Sabo.
- 21:13Yeah.
- 21:13I mean, but not Luffy.
- 21:16Yeah, but like.
- 21:17Or any other straw hat.
- 21:18Sabo's not a straw hat.
- 21:20So who's Sabo?
- 21:22Sabo is Luffy's other brother.
- 21:24So we got Ace, Sabo, Luffy growing up together.
- 21:27Ace and Luffy are biological brother.
- 21:29Sabo isn't.
- 21:30What else do they need to know?
- 21:32I mean, they're just kind of raised this way with each other as friends.
- 21:37They're not.
- 21:38I don't think any of them are biologically related.
- 21:40Yeah, it was like Ace and Luffy are not biological.
- 21:42Because remember, I forget.
- 21:44They just look alike.
- 21:46Sabo doesn't look like the other two at all.
- 21:48I mean, we don't know the mom.
- 21:49What if they have the same mom?
- 21:50We don't know the mom.
- 21:51She could have gotten her.
- 21:52They could have the same mom.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:53Crocodile is also Ace's mom, correct?
- 21:55Yep.
- 21:56What a man.
- 21:57What a gene pool.
- 21:59Gold Roger and Crocodile.
- 22:01God, that's Pedigree.
- 22:03Ace was so cool.
- 22:04But anyway, yeah.
- 22:06Ace and Sabo.
- 22:06Though I feel like throughout the show, Luffy continues to be influenced by them.
- 22:11Obviously, Ace's death completely changed everyone in the straw hats.
- 22:16And finding out Sabo was alive shortly after also, pretty big game changer.
- 22:22Liz, you want to speak some to how does their death presence, etc.
- 22:27Really influence Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats in their journey?
- 22:29Yeah, I mean, when Ace was first introduced as Luffy's older brother, you could tell he was definitely someone that Luffy also looks up to.
- 22:37Portrayed that cool older brother vibe.
- 22:39Like, I've already started doing this and you know, who knows?
- 22:44Luffy could have.
- 22:45Well, we know how Luffy was influenced, but also, you know, I'm sure Ace influenced his desire to become a pirate as well.
- 22:53Ace was with the Whitebeard's pirates and so just kind of that bond like this was I would even say Luffy's first big nakame bond.
- 23:02You know, even though it was brothers.
- 23:04His familiar bonds where he's ride or die.
- 23:06And Sabo, they didn't have much of a childhood with him because he like transitioned out.
- 23:11So somewhere and then they thought he died.
- 23:13So we actually didn't really learn a lot about Sabo, just that he was a childhood friend.
- 23:18And then whenever they were doing in the toy Des Rosa, they were fighting for Aces Flame Flame fruit.
- 23:26Because once you pass on, you know, your fruit regenerates.
- 23:30That's when Sabo comes and we learned that he's alive.
- 23:33So just the thought of like.
- 23:35And has the fruit.
- 23:37Yeah, he like straight up stole it.
- 23:39Yep.
- 23:40Nope.
- 23:41No point fighting.
- 23:41The fruit's mine.
- 23:42Yeah.
- 23:43Here I am.
- 23:43And he literally carries on Ace's will.
- 23:46Oh yeah.
- 23:46It's good writing, right?
- 23:48That arc may have been too long, but it's still good.
- 23:50I'm very curious to see how Sabo ended up with Dragon like, as I think he's like second in command of the revolutionary.
- 23:58But I'm sure that's another hundred episode backstory we'll get down the road.
- 24:03Yeah, one day.
- 24:04But I mean, like, there's so many.
- 24:06Questions left to ask.
- 24:07And there he said Oda was finally like, hey, guys, less than five years.
- 24:13I don't know if I buy it.
- 24:14We're gonna.
- 24:15Guys, can we just think about the people who've been watching who may.
- 24:18Who may have gotten into One Piece when they were like 40 and they died before knowing the One piece.
- 24:25I think about that.
- 24:25Listen, I've accepted a few things.
- 24:27I've accepted that I might not live to see what the One Piece is.
- 24:30I feel like I might though that one.
- 24:32I have more high hopes for.
- 24:33I have very low hopes that I'm gonna finish the Kingdom Hearts series before I die.
- 24:38I just don't Think it's gonna finish in a lifetime.
- 24:41And Star Wars.
- 24:42It's definitely gonna outlive me 100%.
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:46I mean, and Game of Thrones.
- 24:48Are you guys.
- 24:49Yeah, I don't care about Game of Thrones.
- 24:50I made peace about the other one.
- 24:52In relation to any of your, like, childhood friend at this age.
- 24:55Because of course, siblings, like, you're gonna grow up with, but I'm not in touch with anyone.
- 25:00Was a friend.
- 25:01But at this age, because they're like,.
- 25:03I am this age.
- 25:04Yeah, we are.
- 25:05We are our current age.
- 25:09But I mean, just saying, like, the bonds are strong in the.
- 25:11In these ones.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:14But no, I.
- 25:15My.
- 25:16One of my roommates I've known for like 19 years.
- 25:1918 years.
- 25:21So, yeah, I think TJ's my oldest friend.
- 25:24I mean, I have friends probably.
- 25:26Listen, I've known Christian and I have been friends.
- 25:30Well, you and I have been friends along that.
- 25:31But Chris and I have been friends since 2010, which is a long time now.
- 25:35Josh, We've known each other over half our lives, if you think about it.
- 25:38Yeah, that's weird.
- 25:39But we haven't been like, super close half our lives.
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:42TJ's probably the longest friendship that we're still pretty close anyway.
- 25:45So.
- 25:46Yeah, a Sabo, pretty big influences, not just on Luffy, but on the story as a whole.
- 25:50Because we don't know what Sabo's doing with the revolutionary armory.
- 25:55When Ace died, literally everybody in the globe that mattered showed up.
- 25:59And it was pretty pivotal.
- 26:02And then for Luffy specifically, realizing he wasn't powerful enough, coming back, realizing he had no brothers, find out one of his brothers actually was alive, and then got the fruit pass on of the abilities and everything from Ace
- 26:14to his other brother.
- 26:15And I feel like that was a pretty big closure moment for him.
- 26:18But still leaving stuff out there.
- 26:19Like, what's Sabo doing now?
- 26:21There's just a lot of open threads there.
- 26:22But I feel like that's where you get that word entanglement with Will.
- 26:25Like, it's not just one person influencing the other.
- 26:27Everybody's kind of being influenced in all kinds of ways here.
- 26:30Yeah, that's what makes the series difficult and nuanced.
- 26:33Yeah.
- 26:33And cool.
- 26:35But we have the straw hat pirates themselves.
- 26:37So Luffy not only has his influences, he influences a lot of people just by his character, his will.
- 26:44And I think, honestly, sometimes it's just because he's fun.
- 26:47But tj, how would you say Luffy inspires others?
- 26:49Because for those who haven't seen a lot, they might just see Luffy, he's really powerful.
- 26:53And then sometimes we see he's eating a lot of food and making jokes, and he's a goofball, and how could he inspire others?
- 26:59Luffy exerts his will on the world of One Piece so strongly and basically forces others to try and do the same.
- 27:10He literally has to force Robin to live her life the way she wants to.
- 27:15And that's a huge moment in.
- 27:17Yes.
- 27:17Lobby.
- 27:17And we all know that, and that's a great part of the show.
- 27:20But that's what Luffy does for all of the straw hats.
- 27:24Except for, I guess, like, Zorro.
- 27:27He just kind of picked up Zorro.
- 27:29He was like, hey, man, you want to go hunt pirates and Marines with me?
- 27:33He's like, sure, yeah, yeah.
- 27:35I mean, it happens.
- 27:35I feel like it happens a few different ways.
- 27:37Sometimes he's just like, no, you need to live sometimes.
- 27:41Truly, man, this is going to sound bad, but I think it's just honest.
- 27:45Sometimes I think it's just for amusement's sake.
- 27:48Like, Luffy just finds it so funny to have a reindeer doctor.
- 27:51He's like, yeah, yeah, you're on my crew.
- 27:54This is too entertaining not to happen.
- 27:55Or Frankie, Truly, I think that Luffy just thought he was just so entertaining that he was like, yeah, this guy's coming with me.
- 28:03Also, sometimes you just can't mind.
- 28:04But that's his nakama.
- 28:06Yeah.
- 28:06He's like, just read the room.
- 28:10Yeah.
- 28:10But then there's stuff like, you know, Nami and then Chopper again.
- 28:12Like, there's some ones where, like, people were just so enslaved.
- 28:16What Luffy stands for is freedom.
- 28:18And it goes annoyingly with the whole, you know, Jack Sparrow.
- 28:21If you think Pirates of the Caribbean, the black flag stands, or Black Pearl stands for freedom.
- 28:26And that's why, you know, I think people should really listen to that pirate episode of Whole Church.
- 28:31And also, you know, my favorite Bible verse?
- 28:33Is that why?
- 28:34Wow, I'm blanking.
- 28:35It's five one.
- 28:36Galatians.
- 28:36Five one.
- 28:37It is for freedom.
- 28:38You set us free.
- 28:38And I'm like, freedom is by its own nature, I think, inspirational when you realize you've been set free from something.
- 28:45That's why so many people who are Christian who have turned later in life tend to be really passionate about their faith because they realize they weren't free, and now they are.
- 28:54And that is inspiring in a way that I don't think you could really put words to.
- 28:59I think that's what happens with Luffy.
- 29:00Luffy's going out.
- 29:01And his core belief is People should be free.
- 29:04So when he sees that they're not, he's going to do something about it.
- 29:07And it's really hard not to want to stand with someone who put their life on the line just because he thought you should be free.
- 29:14And, like, I just think innately it's inspiring.
- 29:16He does it every time.
- 29:17Liz, anything else to add?
- 29:18How does Luffy inspire his whole crew, which is actually a lot more than the people we see on screen a lot of times?
- 29:25Well, the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
- 29:26I mean, Luffy has an impossible dream, right?
- 29:29And so we can all think about maybe when we were little smaller.
- 29:33Even now we have kind of a dream, but, like, that will never happen.
- 29:36Like, it would be nice, but, you know, everything would magically have to align.
- 29:40So he inspires them to go after them.
- 29:43Possible even when others, like you never do it.
- 29:45Yeah.
- 29:46Which I think is why you see a big difference in the stories of how some of the Starfleet Starfleet Straw Hats come to join his fleet.
- 29:54Like, early on, it is like Zorro.
- 29:55Like, I guess, or like, I think maybe just begrudgingly out of respect is just kind of tagging along.
- 30:01Sanji.
- 30:02I think it's kind of just like, convenience.
- 30:04Like, yeah, I'm trying to get to the Grand Blue anyway.
- 30:05I might as well join.
- 30:06Like, early on, it feels like it's more just matters of convenience, or we happen to be going the same direction, and then later on in the series, it's more of a no, this guy is the real deal.
- 30:16Yeah.
- 30:17And by the time those goals are achieved, you know, Zoro and Sanji were like, well, I'm.
- 30:22That's my captain.
- 30:23That's the king.
- 30:23The pirates.
- 30:24I'm not going anywhere.
- 30:26God, I love Luffy.
- 30:28All right, last one.
- 30:29Kobe.
- 30:31Kind of a dark horse.
- 30:32I feel like we actually could probably make the whole episode about Luffy and Kobe if we wanted to.
- 30:36Kobe has the most glow up there ever did.
- 30:39Glow.
- 30:40Yeah.
- 30:41It is crazy.
- 30:41He starts this, like, punk kid who's like, I want to be marines one day.
- 30:44And then you have Luffy who, you know, pirate should just beat this kid up.
- 30:47And it's like, no, I'm gonna help you.
- 30:49That's your goal.
- 30:50You should get to do that.
- 30:53Yeah.
- 30:55Koby actually just looks like, wow.
- 30:56Rang.
- 30:57You guys have ever played Tekken?
- 30:58No, he just looks like, wow.
- 31:00Rang now.
- 31:00I think it's so funny.
- 31:01It looks just like him.
- 31:03Entertaining, though.
- 31:03But, yeah, I feel like Luffy and Kobe definitely influenced each other because it starts off as Kobe's just kind of punk kid Luffy enables him to be able to chase his dreams.
- 31:12Kobe still is inspired by Luffy.
- 31:14And Luffy every time he sees, like, the news or anytime he sees news that Kobe is doing well, like, it excites Luffy because Luffy isn't like, oh, I hate the Marines.
- 31:22Luffy doesn't hate his enemies.
- 31:24That's not what Luffy does.
- 31:25Luffy's like, I want everybody to be free.
- 31:26If you want to be a Marine, cool.
- 31:27Go be the best Marine.
- 31:29Just don't enslave other people.
- 31:31That's all he wants.
- 31:32Yeah.
- 31:33He doesn't even hate the Marines.
- 31:34He just wants people to live their life.
- 31:37He hates hate people who abuse their power.
- 31:41Yeah, yeah, he's Captain America.
- 31:44But no, he does.
- 31:45Yeah, he's Captain Japan.
- 31:46He hates bullies.
- 31:47He hates people not getting to live their dreams.
- 31:50Whatever.
- 31:50If you're getting to live your dream, it makes Luffy happy.
- 31:53And I think that is just such, like, a deep character moment when you see Luffy find out about Kobe and he's not like, oh, man, maybe I shouldn't have let that kid become a Marine.
- 32:01Instead, he's like, hell, yeah, this is awesome.
- 32:03He's doing great, and he's excited for him.
- 32:05And I'm like, I just.
- 32:07I love Luffy so much.
- 32:08But the fact that Kobe still looks up to Luffy, even though he's, like, a Marine and Luffy's a pirate.
- 32:13Conflict of interest.
- 32:14But Kobe's still, like, cheering for Luffy.
- 32:16I love their relationship.
- 32:19Obviously, it's gonna go somewhere at some point, but where?
- 32:21Where's it going?
- 32:22Yeah.
- 32:23Kobe is like, every time Luffy comes up, he's like, we don't have to be worried about Luffy.
- 32:28Luffy's a good guy.
- 32:30Yeah.
- 32:30Just let him call himself a pirate.
- 32:32Leave it alone.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:33And at this point, he's really close with Helmeppo.
- 32:37Like, he and Helmeppo are Marine captains.
- 32:40Yeah, I forgot about that.
- 32:41And they've gone through their whole redemption arc.
- 32:43So funny.
- 32:44Well, Kobe didn't really need to be redeemed, but Helmeppo did.
- 32:47Yeah, But Koby's actually pretty powerful now, which is awesome, seeing how Luffy inspired a Marine to be this good.
- 32:55And you're just like, what?
- 32:58I love it.
- 32:59Such a good show.
- 33:01There are just so many payoffs that we still need to get and so many setups that we still need to get and be paid off that there's no way this story can end in five years.
- 33:11Yeah.
- 33:11Yeah.
- 33:12And so usually when we do this series, we would ask like, how would the story be different without one of the characters we're talking about?
- 33:20I think to me, and you know, I like to hear you guys opinions.
- 33:23But like, the story is so well written.
- 33:25Everybody is so entangled.
- 33:27Man, Will should love this episode.
- 33:29I don't think it works without a single person being removed.
- 33:31Because Oda very clearly set things up years and years in advance.
- 33:36And it's like, yeah, you can't take out Garp.
- 33:39The story doesn't make sense without Garp.
- 33:41You can't take out Monkey D Dragon.
- 33:42You can't take out Koby even.
- 33:44I'm not sure where that's going.
- 33:45But I know Odo enough that it's going to pay off in the end.
- 33:48And probably a big enough way that the story won't make sense without him.
- 33:52Yeah.
- 33:52Well, at this point, Garp has kind of taken Koby as his newest son.
- 33:57Yeah.
- 33:58Which is also pretty entertaining because he's lost Ace.
- 34:02Yeah.
- 34:02And Luffy basically gifted Koby to them.
- 34:06Yeah.
- 34:07Yeah.
- 34:08But what about you?
- 34:08Do you guys think there's any of these characters the story could make it without?
- 34:13And still Dragon?
- 34:14I would say if Dragon wasn't Luffy's dad, like, well, we need his genes to have Luffy because we just don't know much about him right now.
- 34:23Like, anyone could lead the revolutionary army.
- 34:25Yeah, that's true.
- 34:25Anybody could do it.
- 34:26I feel like you do need the revolutionary army so that you have a contrast between the whole government and pirate thing and you see that as just an alternative.
- 34:34Like, I feel like it's necessary.
- 34:36I don't think it has to be Monkey D Dragon.
- 34:38Yeah.
- 34:38Are you guys caught up to the manga?
- 34:40I was trying to figure that out the other day.
- 34:42I don't think so.
- 34:43I think I'm a few weeks behind.
- 34:45Well, I'm not gonna say it, but there are some crazy characters that we have seen more of than Dragon at this point.
- 34:50Say it.
- 34:52Do it.
- 34:52Name drop.
- 34:54I dare you.
- 34:54Emu.
- 34:56Emu.
- 34:57Like, yeah.
- 34:58I love this show.
- 34:59Interesting.
- 35:00That's who Luffy's fighting.
- 35:01Yeah.
- 35:02Right now is Emu.
- 35:04That's so interesting with Loki.
- 35:07So in this series, if you had to choose to either be like a captain or a marine admiral or someone who's underneath, like, you're learning from Luffy or you're Garp secondhand, where would you rather be?
- 35:19Would you rather be the one in charge?
- 35:21Would you rather be one of the people who's just like, I'm on board.
- 35:23Let's do this.
- 35:24I don't know.
- 35:26I would love to have a guy like Luffy on my team under my influence, and I would love to work for somebody like Luffy.
- 35:32So.
- 35:34I think I would be so stressed working under Luffy because I would just get so annoyed.
- 35:40I was always getting into a pension in trouble, and I'm such a rural type a person.
- 35:44So I think I would want to chill with, go up and Kobe and be like the justice and the injustice of the Navy, but, like, secretly be like, jealous that they're having more fun than me.
- 35:54Yeah, I have a hard, hard time with this because I am more the rule follower person usually.
- 35:59Even though I'm not like super type A, I'm just kind of like, I like rules, you know, I like the speed limit.
- 36:04It's cool, but not true.
- 36:06I do like having.
- 36:07He does not pay attention to the speed limit.
- 36:09I mean, he didn't say paid attention.
- 36:11He just said he liked it.
- 36:12I don't go over the speed limit very often, so very often, usually I don't.
- 36:17This is.
- 36:18That's a different episode.
- 36:20I would like to hear when I go over the speed limit.
- 36:22Every time you're not focused on driving the speed limit, I feel like I.
- 36:25Usually am going under because when I realize I haven't been paying attention, I look and I'm like, huh?
- 36:29I'm going 10 under.
- 36:30That's probably a problem.
- 36:31Sure.
- 36:31Sometimes anyway.
- 36:33Or maybe it's just every time I'm in your car.
- 36:35That's true.
- 36:36That would be encouraging.
- 36:37I think sometimes that does happen because, like, if someone's riding with me, I'm like, they're gonna judge me if I'm driving too slow.
- 36:42So I tend to drive faster.
- 36:43But anyway, whole nother conversation, I just feel like I'd feel uncomfortable going against the government.
- 36:50But also if I was part of a system that I knew was corrupt, then I'd be like, I'd be uncomfortable there too.
- 36:55Like, I feel in this world I'd be uncomfortable in any position.
- 36:59Oh, you.
- 36:59You vote, don't you?
- 37:01Depends.
- 37:02Well, that's why I said under Garp, because Garp will go against the Navy.
- 37:06That's why he never.
- 37:07He truly.
- 37:08I know.
- 37:09I want, like, Sabo and them.
- 37:10They still seem like a fun group, but they have their, like, hey, our priority is we are going to take down a corrupt system and we're going to do it with purpose.
- 37:19We all three chose different, but I.
- 37:21Want to be underneath somebody.
- 37:22I don't want to charge of the revolutionary army.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:25I want to be under Garp.
- 37:26But I mean, like.
- 37:26But Garp will not be an admiral because he wants to.
- 37:30He doesn't want to be so high up so he can still do what he wants.
- 37:33You know what I mean?
- 38:20I love Garp.
- 38:21Garp is a good.
- 38:22One of the best characters actually.
- 38:24So digging a little bit deeper, as geekologists do, do you think it's possible to be the same kind of influencer that Luffy is to others in like the real world?
- 38:34Because part of the thing with One Piece is, as TJ so delicately put it, Luffy exerts his willpower on the world.
- 38:41The world just kind of binged to Luffy's will.
- 38:44That's not so much a thing in real life.
- 38:46Do you think it's still possible to have that kind of influence without everything's going to bend to my will?
- 38:51No, it is.
- 38:52And you can.
- 38:53I mean, you can be here to elaborate.
- 38:55Like, I'm not going to be out here fighting governments for someone.
- 38:59But in your day to day life, you absolutely can try to live that way.
- 39:03And you'd be surprised.
- 39:05Like, I could just decide I'm going to be king of the Byroids.
- 39:08Yeah, I do feel like in some ways I do part of it.
- 39:12But like I don't, you know, I don't have the same kind of willpower.
- 39:15So I'm not that inspirational.
- 39:16But like, I do that where, like, I think it's more autism than anything though, where I'm just like, this is what I want.
- 39:21I'm gonna make that thing happen.
- 39:22And I just kind of ignore what everybody else says about it because I guess not what I want.
- 39:26I think about like, because I.
- 39:28It's the fall, so I go to like so, so many conferences throughout the fall.
- 39:33So it's kind of one of those things like you live your life as an inspiration because that's really what Luffy's doing.
- 39:38He's like living his life and his life and his passion is inspiring others to follow their dreams.
- 39:43So like, when you hear someone else's story and testimony, if you will, that inspires someone that they can also do it.
- 39:50Like, you overcame this struggle, you overcame this abuse.
- 39:54I can do it too, and kind of live a life by example that way.
- 39:58I think the most, to me, the most applicable thing that Luffy does.
- 40:02And it's hard to do it in as much of a grandiose kind of way in our world, in my opinion.
- 40:08But I think you could still do it where Luffy inspires people because he offers freedom.
- 40:11He sees people not being free.
- 40:13He's like, let me find a way to do something about that.
- 40:15And that inspires people.
- 40:16But, like, in the words of Gandalf, I feel like you can kind of.
- 40:20The small actions of everyday people can still do that.
- 40:24You see someone who can't pay for a meal, and you can pay for their meal.
- 40:28That's a way to inspire somebody.
- 40:29Like, it might not seem like it matters in that moment, but it does.
- 40:33I remember church camp that all three of us worked.
- 40:36At one point, I found out 10 years after the fact that somebody was like, yeah, I actually committed going to the church.
- 40:41I'm church leader.
- 40:42All this stuff, and it's because of you.
- 40:43And I was like, all I remember is slightly bullying you when you were a kid because I was stupid.
- 40:50And I was like, I just was uneven.
- 40:52They probably would hate me forever.
- 40:53And they were like, yeah, they said, yeah, you were kind of a bully, which I was.
- 40:58But also, you did this thing.
- 41:00You told everyone that they needed to come up and pray with me, that we were together, we were brothers.
- 41:04And that stuck with me.
- 41:05And I'm like, yeah, I don't remember that at all.
- 41:07So I think sometimes it is those small moments, it may be being less of a bully that can be inspirational.
- 41:13And that's something that stuck with me is like, I still try to do those small things because I'm like, yeah, apparently sometimes it matters, even if I don't see the fruits of it for 10 years or maybe ever.
- 41:22Yeah.
- 41:23And thankfully, I was a really cool kid, so Josh didn't bully me.
- 41:28Also, you liked playing killer bunnies in the Quest for the Magical Carrot, so, yeah.
- 41:31Yeah, that's what I said.
- 41:32Yeah.
- 41:33You enjoyed playing the same game as me, so we were friends.
- 41:38That's what mattered to me at that point in life.
- 41:40Are you going to be entertaining?
- 41:42But, yeah.
- 41:43Liz, any other notes how we might be able to inspire the way that Luffy inspires or Garp or any of the other people mentioned?
- 41:49I mean, honestly, with people just kind of being so out for themselves in this world and so, like, egocentric, just being kind and asking people how they are and just, like, taking the time to get to know literally,
- 42:03your neighbor and the people around you and show an interest in caring for them.
- 42:08I mean, especially with the world of social media, so many people feel alone now more than ever.
- 42:13So just being able to reach out, you never know who might be on their, like, last leg, like, wondering if they want to, like, continue on and, like, you're being kind to them makes all the difference.
- 42:25Yeah.
- 42:26One More for me.
- 42:28And then we'll see if TJ has anything else.
- 42:30But the thing with Koby, it would have been so easy for Luffy to be like, oh, Marines are stupid, or whatever.
- 42:36But he's like, I'm going to enable you and empower you to do what you want to do.
- 42:40And I think that's a big thing we all could probably learn from is we.
- 42:43Especially when you're younger, maybe less so when you're our age.
- 42:46But people who's like, oh, I want to be an artist.
- 42:48I want to be whatever.
- 42:48And it's so easy to pick on them and be like, oh, why would you want to do that?
- 42:51Or you can't do that.
- 42:52Everybody tries to whatever.
- 42:53And we belittle what other people want to do.
- 42:55But I think Luffy's method of cool.
- 42:57How can I help you do that?
- 42:58Even if to me it makes no sense, or I don't care about that thing, or I think it's silly.
- 43:03The thing that was important was Luffy's like, no, that's what you want, and I'm going to enable you.
- 43:07And it changed someone's life forever.
- 43:09And I think that is something we can do.
- 43:10We see what somebody's goals are.
- 43:12TJ and I work in the food industry as managers, and it's easy to belittle other people.
- 43:20Or you can see what people want to do.
- 43:21Like, what I love is when I see someone's like, hey, this is my goal in life.
- 43:24And I'm like, oh, cool.
- 43:25You do that every Friday.
- 43:26Then I'm gonna find a way to get you Fridays off so you can chase your goal.
- 43:30I think enabling people the best that we can to chase their dreams is important.
- 43:34Yeah.
- 43:34Tj, any final thoughts?
- 43:36No, I do agree.
- 43:37I think we're uniquely equipped to help people do that.
- 43:39Yeah.
- 43:40As managers, not as Christians.
- 43:44Yeah, no, I know.
- 43:45I just.
- 43:46It was just funny.
- 43:46I was like, huh?
- 43:47Yeah.
- 43:48Anyway, so with that, then, we will go ahead and start wrapping this one up.
- 43:53Just so everybody knows, we will have a bonus question so those who are official members of Sidmak Ecology can hear us discuss some of the other faces behind Sanji, Zoro and the other straw hats, because we do get
- 44:04some more info on them as the show goes on, so specifically to them.
- 44:08For now, though, we're gonna start with a recommendation.
- 44:12There's some other comics, anime, whatever, that you think everybody should check out.
- 44:15Liz.
- 44:16My recommendation, I guess, is, gosh, it's hard because it's me.
- 44:21Go have a kid.
- 44:22If you don't have one.
- 44:23It's pretty great, I guess because that's been like my life lately.
- 44:27No thanks.
- 44:29In the confines of marriage, Fang recommends.
- 44:32Get pregnant if you're happily Mary.
- 44:34I don't know, I'm just trying to think what besides that one?
- 44:39Anime, what have I been watching?
- 44:41Recommended.
- 44:42I mean, guess Audiobooks.
- 44:43That's been kind of nice.
- 44:45So just get out there, maybe get an audible subscription and find the genre of your choice.
- 44:50Because I have little time for anything else.
- 44:53I like it.
- 44:54Fair enough.
- 44:56I recommend finding the graphic novels for Dead Space.
- 44:59A fun way to learn more about that world.
- 45:01And it's enjoyable.
- 45:02I've been reviewing some of them recently, but I haven't been like super into them lately.
- 45:06I just remember them being awesome.
- 45:07So I'm recommend that I have been.
- 45:11Going over to a friend's house and playing old fighting games or just like old games in general.
- 45:16But I would, I would recommend just going back to the past.
- 45:20Play games from like the 2000s 2010s that you didn't play back then and just see what, what's changed.
- 45:28It's so different.
- 45:29Well, he has like a pretty decent retro at this point console collection.
- 45:34He's got like a PS3 and PS2, Xbox 360, the original Xbox.
- 45:39So we'll play like Virtua Fighter 4 and Tekken 4 and like Dead or Alive 3 and Soul Caliber 3.
- 45:49It's just, it's crazy to see what's changed and how the industry has changed.
- 45:53Changed how you've changed.
- 45:55Yeah.
- 45:55Even with the style of gameplay, it's like.
- 45:58Yeah.
- 45:59Speaking of dj, you want an Xbox?
- 46:01An original Xbox?
- 46:02Which one?
- 46:03Yeah, cool.
- 46:04Someone, someone gave me one.
- 46:05I have nothing to do, so.
- 46:06Awesome.
- 46:07Cool.
- 46:07I figured somebody would want it.
- 46:09All right.
- 46:10So yeah, retro game with tj.
- 46:11He will have an original Xbox.
