- 0:56someone help other Alcoholics achieve sobriety.
- 1:01I'm an alcoholic. My story started like with just
- 1:09about most of the Alcoholics I know, you know, around 1415.
- 1:15I, I lived in a, in a family, which was, you know, ordinary.
- 1:23That's probably the best description.
- 1:27You know, parents did what they could, gave me love and in their
- 1:32own way, maybe fathers kind of gave it didn't couldn't show it
- 1:37enough. But, you know, I didn't have a
- 1:42really, really reason to feel, you know, that I don't fit, you
- 1:48know, because that, that was the, that was the problem when I
- 1:51arrived from the start, as long as I remember, I never feel, I
- 1:55never felt comfortable with other people.
- 2:00When I discovered alcohol around 15, I guess I've, I've, I've
- 2:07felt like that's, you know, after drinking.
- 2:09I felt like that's the way I should be all the time.
- 2:13You know, unfortunately I only felt like that when I drunk.
- 2:17So I drank a lot. I drank a lot and whenever I
- 2:21could, you know, once I moved out of the house, you know, then
- 2:26there was no restrictions. I could drink seven days a week
- 2:29and I had two or three weeks benders and, and things kind of
- 2:35subside a little bit. Once I, once I migrated to
- 2:40Australia was when I was 26, I discovered pot and that kind of,
- 2:47I guess, well, it was just another addition.
- 2:50It was another, another medicine, you know, in inverted
- 2:54commas to, to fix my mind, you know, to stop being tormented by
- 3:00my own brain. I, I sort of, you know, felt
- 3:08like I could stop at any time, you know, right through the,
- 3:12the, the, in the early days and, and I did, you know, there,
- 3:17there were, there were periods I didn't drink.
- 3:19But, you know, I've, I've never, I never knew what was wrong with
- 3:23me. I, you know, I've tried various
- 3:27solutions, you know, doctors and psychologists, psychiatrists.
- 3:33I, I've, I've, you know, I, I've tried suicide.
- 3:39I've went in been in psychiatric hospital.
- 3:44It was, you know, there was always no matter, you know, how,
- 3:47how well I was doing and I, you know, I was done surprisingly
- 3:51well in professionally. I had a family, I had three
- 3:55kids. You know, on a surface it, it
- 3:58looked like, you know, I was doing a ride, but inside I was a
- 4:01mess right through, through my whole life.
- 4:05And, and that caught up with me. You know, that caught up me with
- 4:11me in the mid 50s when when I my marriage fall apart and and I
- 4:21started drinking full time, stopped doing my my profession,
- 4:27you know, which I loved. I and I locked myself at home,
- 4:32picked up the, you know, job, which didn't require much
- 4:36thinking. You know, it just gave me the
- 4:38cash to, to keep drinking every day, you know, seven days a
- 4:43week. And at the beginning I was
- 4:45saying to myself always because, you know, marriage fell apart
- 4:49and, and, and that, that was my, my excuse at that time.
- 4:54And I, I was making promises myself because I had lived with
- 4:57my ex for, for three years under the same roof till our youngest
- 5:03child, youngest child left home after, you know, doing
- 5:08university. And that, that was the deal.
- 5:11And, and that was horrible because, you know, I, I stayed
- 5:15under the same roof, which the person which I felt at that time
- 5:19was the, the reasons of, for my downfall.
- 5:21And, you know, because at that time, you know, when I was
- 5:25drinking, right through my life, I was always blaming, you know,
- 5:28everything and everybody, people I've worked with, you know, my,
- 5:32my wife, you know, my parents, you know, I was digging in the
- 5:36past and my father was responsible.
- 5:39I was, you know, blinking the whole world.
- 5:41But I didn't, you know, for my, for the way I felt.
- 5:46But I've never looked, look at myself, you know, But yeah.
- 5:53So that three years were really, really kind of where I really
- 6:00slipped really deep into drinking.
- 6:02And then she moved out and I, and that was the deadline when
- 6:06I'm supposed to be stopping drinking.
- 6:09And the deadline passed and I kept drinking and, and got to
- 6:15the point that, you know, I made a trial, trial stops.
- 6:19I would stop for a week, I'd stop for three days.
- 6:22I'd stop for two days. And then and then, you know, it
- 6:26was drinking, drinking. You know, I'd make a promise
- 6:31myself tonight. I'll make a promise myself in
- 6:34the morning. And but by afternoon I'll be
- 6:38drinking again. And I knew I can't stop
- 6:40drinking. So I can't stop drinking.
- 6:42I got to the point that I knew that this is it, that there is
- 6:46no power, that I have no power to stop myself drinking.
- 6:51And that's when when I realized I reached end of the road, you
- 6:56know, I reached that there was no hope.
- 6:59You know, I, I knew it was just a matter of time when I will,
- 7:04you know, either develop the health problems or, you know, I
- 7:08didn't even, I didn't even had the opportunity of I didn't even
- 7:14have that choice of killing myself anymore because I tried
- 7:17that in the past and I failed, you know, like I felt like I
- 7:21failed all my life and, and I was just, you know, I was just
- 7:25waiting there. This was basically a waiting
- 7:28game, drinking and waiting to, to see the end, you know, and,
- 7:37and AA, the AAII look at the website, you know, I look at it
- 7:45more out of curiosity, I guess at the time.
- 7:49I look at the AA website and I did the questionnaire there and
- 7:54I, I, I came on top of the class, you know, I had a high
- 7:58score. I had a really high score.
- 8:01And, and I thought, well, I'll give it a shot.
- 8:04I'll go to the meeting. I found a local meeting
- 8:06Saturday. I went to the meeting.
- 8:10I've heard, you know, I've heard a few shares.
- 8:13And then when my time came, I said, hi, I'm Roman.
- 8:18I think I'm an alcoholic. So on that first day, something
- 8:22happened. You know, I still can't say what
- 8:25happened. You know, I, there was a meeting
- 8:28the next day. I went there and I then I, I
- 8:31said I'm a Roman. I'm an alcoholic.
- 8:33I knew, I knew that I'm, I am like I, that I am like the
- 8:39people who were at the time in those rooms.
- 8:42You know what? I've heard the stories.
- 8:45I was identified with those stories, you know, they were the
- 8:48their stories was my story, you know, in one way or another.
- 8:52And, and that was the beginning of the miracle.
- 8:57You know, I felt, I feel so exhilarated.
- 9:00You know, I, I, I made the commitment very early in my
- 9:08sobriety, you know, that I will, I will, I will believe that I
- 9:12will unconditionally surrender myself to a, a, you know, and I
- 9:17would, I was coming back to that, that promise, you know,
- 9:20because, because the, the miracle of, of sobriety, you
- 9:24know, which which happened to me.
- 9:26You know, I, I allow me to believe in a, a, you know,
- 9:32unconditionally and, and that must challenge a lot, you know,
- 9:38in various, in various meetings and in, in various shares, you
- 9:42know, by the members where people did challenge, did
- 9:47challenge IA, you know, but I, I learned very quickly that that
- 9:51that challenge is, it was just immature sobriety.
- 9:56I think on behalf of the, of those people, you know, because
- 9:59I, for me, the IA is for me. I work, right.
- 10:05So I, I, I can't question it. You know, I've got to follow it
- 10:08to the T and still staying at the beginning, you know, the
- 10:16beginning, the beginning beginning was fantastic.
- 10:19You know, I can't remember. I think it was about four or
- 10:22five months. I was, I was in such a high, you
- 10:26know, because all of a sudden I, I got my whole back, you know, I
- 10:31got my life back, you know, I, I didn't have a headache, you
- 10:35know, I started feeling healthy. I started eating healthy,
- 10:42sleeping healthy and, and it felt like, you know, the job
- 10:47been done. You know, I, I'm, I'm cured,
- 10:50right? I'm, I'm released from the
- 10:52bondage of alcohol, but after this, this, this, this initial
- 11:00excitement, I realise that this is just the beginning of the
- 11:04journey that, that there's a lot of ahead of me to, to sort out.
- 11:11And, and, and the longer I'm sobered, the, the more there is
- 11:16a head, you know, to sort out. But it's a sort of like, you
- 11:23know, I'm treating that, that, that work like some, I'm not
- 11:27questioning it. For me, it's like brushing the
- 11:29teeth. I don't question it, right?
- 11:32It's there. It's part of my life now.
- 11:34I remember somebody saying that in the meetings that, you know,
- 11:39if you were, if I was diagnosed with, with terminal disease,
- 11:45right, and I would have to, you know, go for the procedure every
- 11:49day to the hospital, Would I choose to do that or would I or
- 11:54would I not right. And I know in my, in my on, on
- 11:59my part, the answer would be yes, I will choose that
- 12:02procedure, right? So a, a is like that procedure
- 12:05for me. You know, if I stop doing a, a,
- 12:08I'm going to die. I know that, you know, I had, I
- 12:11had tastes of it during COVID where, you know, I've, I've,
- 12:15I've distanced myself from, from, from a, a for one reason
- 12:20or another, no live meetings, etcetera.
- 12:23And I felt how, how my sobriety is, is, is shrinking.
- 12:29It's disappearing. You know, likely the, the live
- 12:33meeting came back and, and, you know, took me a couple of couple
- 12:37of months to crawl back to where I left off.
- 12:40You know, and I'm doing this recording at the end of, of the
- 12:47another step in, in, in my sobriety.
- 12:50I, I'm finishing the, I'm at the end of the big tagalong or those
- 12:57are actually two or three tagalongs, but plus couple of
- 13:00rallies. And, and I took off on that on
- 13:05that trip because I knew I, I need to take my, my involvement
- 13:10and my work in, in a, a, a step further.
- 13:14You know, I felt that doing meetings because you know, I, I
- 13:18normally do at least 5 to 6 meetings a week and I realized
- 13:24that that I can't delay doing the real work.
- 13:30You know, steps I'm by that I mean steps because you know, I,
- 13:35I always knew that steps is a call of, of this program, but I
- 13:40was looking for excuses not to do it.
- 13:42You know, I didn't want to give it away my control, the control
- 13:46of of, of, of my life, you know, of the world, you know which
- 13:53knowing, you know, I, I, I know I failed controlling my life,
- 13:57but I still, my ego is still is still insisting that it can, can
- 14:03control my life and the life of everybody and everything around
- 14:06me. It's still so strong.
- 14:09So in, in my sobriety through the, you know, long period of
- 14:13what, four years, 4 1/2 years, I was looking for excuses not to
- 14:18do the steps. You know what I was
- 14:20concentrating on in I was looking in other people's chair
- 14:24for the excuse not to do it, right?
- 14:27So I was, I was, I was feeling like I'm off the hook when I
- 14:31heard that, you know, somebody, you know, done steps after four
- 14:34years or five years or six years or whatever, right?
- 14:38I've seen there's an excuse for me not to do it and, and allow
- 14:43me to procrastinate. But but I, I, I reached the
- 14:49point before this, this trip, I did that I felt I, I was missing
- 14:55something. I, I knew I need, I need to do
- 14:58more work. And I, I've started and I've
- 15:02started in this tagalong and on tagalong people at the beginning
- 15:05were sharing and, and saying how, how much it changed their
- 15:09lives on the previous ideologues.
- 15:11They, they went on, I thought, I, you know, I find it hard to
- 15:15believe at the beginning, you know, it was all how the, the
- 15:18bit of a holidays and with, with some sharing with AI members can
- 15:23change my life. But, but now two months down the
- 15:27track, I realized that this, this massive submerge in, in a
- 15:34a, you know, 24/7, talking to the members, you know, having
- 15:38impromptu meetings and doing meetings, doing rallies really,
- 15:47really made the shift in, in, in, in, in my work in, in a, a,
- 15:51you know, I'm now, I now have a sponsor.
- 15:55I'm just about to, to, to start doing step four and, and I
- 16:02believe that that I'm progressing, you know, that I'm
- 16:08progressing onto the level where I should be, you know, I should
- 16:12be to, to solidify, you know, to solidify my, my sobriety.
- 16:24That's, that's, that's basically what it's about.
- 16:27You know, I, I feel that I, I was lucky.
- 16:32I was lucky that I, that I got to this point and I didn't bust,
- 16:38you know, because I know how weak I am still how, how still
- 16:44my ego is ruling my, you know, my thinking and my actions.
- 16:49I still haven't given, given myself and my soul to the higher
- 16:54power, whatever it is, you know, I'm still working out on that
- 16:58concept of, of higher power. But I know by the end of the 12
- 17:02steps, I will refine it and I know that I will, that higher
- 17:06power will, will start playing the big role in my life because
- 17:12at the moment I submit myself to it.
- 17:15I, I found the higher power early, early in the peace, but
- 17:20it is kind of intellectualized. It's it's not, it's you know, I,
- 17:25I, it's, I didn't, I, I don't made the shift on a spiritual
- 17:31level and and and I know I've got to go on my knees and I
- 17:39could simply go on my knees and take it off, right.
- 17:43I've done it. I went underneath.
- 17:45I, I pray to higher power, but I know it would be wouldn't be
- 17:50honest. You know, I know that I still
- 17:52deep down don't want don't want to give away control, but
- 17:59knowing enough about the steps and knowing that, you know, if
- 18:03I, if I honestly and with the with the full trust in in in the
- 18:09program, if I do those steps, I will take it no job.
- 18:13You know, I will, I will refine the higher power.
- 18:17I will stop, you know, living on the sort of old, old software,
- 18:24you know, I will get loaded with the new ideas, with the new, new
- 18:29concepts, how to live. And I will actually follow up on
- 18:33that, you know, because right from the start, right from the
- 18:37start, when I, when I got sober, everything, what, what I
- 18:42received all the, all the suggestions, you know, how
- 18:45initially when, you know, I had problems with, with, with
- 18:52cravings and, and you know, all the suggestions which I got from
- 18:58the members, from the shares, it all worked.
- 19:01You know, everything which I, what I've adopted in my life
- 19:04worked. And I know and I know that that
- 19:11if I adopt 12 steps to its full extent, it, it, yeah, it will
- 19:17take me into, into a higher gear in a, a All in all, I, I, I'm so
- 19:24grateful to to be on the, on the, on the journey, you know,
- 19:28in a, a, you know, because it's, you know, you, you I've been
- 19:35hearing the best is yet to come. You know, this slogan.
- 19:39I love slogans at the beginning. I still love them.
- 19:41You know, the best is yet to come.
- 19:43And it does, you know, it's like I'm asking myself, wow, is that,
- 19:49you know, like is that can get any better.
- 19:51But it does, you know, the next day it does better, you know,
- 19:54there's something else happens and it does get better.
- 19:57You know, in my sobriety, I, I did bit of travelling, you know,
- 20:00and, and the way I, when I used to travel, I, you know, I used
- 20:07to get to know the, the countries and places through,
- 20:11through the prism of, of the local pub, you know, or local
- 20:15watering hole. That's the first place.
- 20:18I would I would search for right now when I travel, I search for
- 20:24a a meetings. Yeah, I'm I'm my my origins are
- 20:27Polish. You know, I I lived in Poland.
- 20:30I went to Poland when I was about 6 months sober, still
- 20:34quite fragile in my sobriety. But you know what, going there
- 20:39and start speaking Polish again after whatever 35 or 40 years of
- 20:44of not doing it was a little bit daunting.
- 20:46But you know, a few minutes into the meeting, I knew I'm back in
- 20:51the with the family, you know, with the family and you know,
- 20:56visiting the sun God forsaken little village close to our
- 21:00Ukrainian border and meeting with the local members there and
- 21:05being, you know, welcomed with the open arms like we know we
- 21:08knew each other our whole lives. You know, it was so beautiful.
- 21:12And the same thing happened when I went on holidays to Bali, you
- 21:16know, meeting with people there all over the place, you know,
- 21:20whatever, like I on this, on this tag along.
- 21:25We, we, we've been travelling in the, in the, in the back of, of,
- 21:31of back of Burke, so to speak. And you know, in small towns and
- 21:35you meet locals there and again, you walk in, you shake hands
- 21:40and, and you feel like you know them, like you always knew them.
- 21:44You know, you know that they speak your language and they
- 21:47know that they understand you. They, they understand, you know,
- 21:51what pain you've been through and what challenges we might
- 21:56still face even now being sober. You know, and I, I, I was asking
- 22:03myself, you know, what the, you know, in early days, what the
- 22:08long term sober members get from the person like me, You know
- 22:12what I mean? Somebody who's been sober for
- 22:1530-40 years, what do they get out of me?
- 22:18You know, but, but I understand now, you know, it's, it's, you
- 22:22know, alcoholism is the disease which, which will never leave
- 22:26me, you know, and, and I need to hear the, hear the stories of
- 22:30newcomers. So I'm, I'm vigilant, you know,
- 22:34I don't get, I can, I don't get, settle on laurels and feel that,
- 22:43you know, I've done it because, because it's a, it's a endless
- 22:48Rd. you know, it's somewhere, it's a road which I'll have to
- 22:52follow till I die. And, and guess what?
- 22:54You know, I'm, I'm really happy to follow that road because my
- 22:59life is so stable now, even when there is, you know, stuff going
- 23:03on around me. I am, I'm like a sheep, you
- 23:07know, with a good stabilizing system, you know, that
- 23:11stabilizing system is, is the a, a, you know, it'll, it'll let me
- 23:14go through one of the storms. I, I, I sailed through it.
- 23:20I'm, I'm coming up on the coming out on the other hand and
- 23:24unscathed. You know what I mean?
- 23:26I, I'm, I'm learning to live, you know, and learning to take
- 23:33whatever life brings my way. I don't let it to destroy my
- 23:38life, you know, like it did in the past.
- 23:41And and I I'm not destroying my life.
- 23:44You know, I'm not I'm not creating stories.
- 23:48You know, I'm not fantasizing about the future.
- 23:51You know, I'm not lamenting about the past.
- 23:54I'm more and more the longer I'm in the system in the in the
- 23:57system, the longer I'm in a A the the more, the more I feel
- 24:06stable, the more I feel like I I know how to do life.
- 24:11Yeah. I I am very grateful member of
- 24:14of AAI. I'm I'm so grateful that I I
- 24:18don't know that I'll ever be able to to repay a a you know,
- 24:21the the deaths, which which you know, and what I received for
- 24:26from a a but and that you know that that is going to come.
- 24:30You know, the service because the service is is is such a big
- 24:33part. I, I know I've got to throw
- 24:36myself into in deeper, you know, to fully, fully be part of a a
- 24:42So I'm very grateful. Thank you.
