- 0:00I do not mean to be mean, I do mean to be mad.
- 0:05Those that criticize this kind of preacher.
- 0:07They don't like Authority. If you ain't got the King James,
- 0:11you ain't got, hey, you don't have a King James, you don't
- 0:14have a Bible. It be surprised then don't go to
- 0:20sleep when I'm talking. Hey, hey, hey, don't, don't
- 0:22don't you lay your head but I'm I'm important.
- 0:25I'm somebody, I love you. You know, I love you.
- 0:28And I convince you, I love you. You better said, you better not
- 0:31your hideous or come up with her to stay awake.
- 0:35You listen to me? I still believe if you have cold
- 0:40day in Hell, before I get my family through, I'm a preacher.
- 0:54When you got dressed today, you dressed deity.
- 1:01This is the for Freedom podcast, a podcast that is part of the
- 1:05RFP Network that seeks to bring freedom in Christ from the
- 1:09spiritual abuse of legalism. Now, here are your hosts, John
- 1:13hollifield, and James secret and so fundamentalism is designed to
- 1:22unpack the idea of authority from scripture.
- 1:24The problem with that is that that's not the defining
- 1:27principle in Scripture. It is a part of the defining
- 1:30principle in. Scripture is love.
- 2:01That sort of teacher, I don't want to give people just
- 2:14a list of things they can start doing differently until they
- 2:17have a heart out of which they're going to be doing those
- 2:20things differently. I think bitterness is different
- 2:30from her. I would say that hurt or even
- 2:33abuse does not have to result in bitterness, Welcome welcome.
- 2:43Welcome everybody back to the for Freedom podcast and it is
- 2:47good to be back sitting here, I'm John hollifield sitting with
- 2:51my co-host from another state. Another chair, Big James safer,
- 2:57what's going on? James?
- 2:58John, welcome back. It is good to be recording with
- 3:01you. Again, we have had a eventful
- 3:05summer, it's been crazy for both of us Ministry, and family and
- 3:10various other things that we've had going.
- 3:12But God still good. He's still on the throne and
- 3:15he's given us Grace where we don't deserve it, and he's
- 3:17giving us patience to deal with people in the ways that we never
- 3:21thought we could have possible in our life.
- 3:23And so, yes, it is good to be back behind the microphone.
- 3:27It is good to be back with you. Today, we're going to be
- 3:30discussing here later a question that was sent to us and I hope
- 3:34we can help. Some people out won't be long
- 3:36episode but just want to be valuable if your time and let
- 3:39you know sort of what's been going on, John how has Your
- 3:42summer been. If you can remember that far
- 3:44back can you tell me some big event things that have happened
- 3:48in your life? This summer?
- 3:51No not really usable so good. Yeah, we went to Pensacola and
- 4:00spent a weekend there and had a good time and Christian College
- 4:06that you went to the Pensacola PCC, the flagship down there.
- 4:09And well, you know, The we sorry.
- 4:15I'm yawning. I'm tired.
- 4:16It's been yeah. Yeah.
- 4:21You Go Robin's dead. James is his legacy?
- 4:25Oh yeah. Well, we were just been busy.
- 4:30Busy, busy busy. So that's, I mean, that's none
- 4:33of that can be it. Can you hear all that?
- 4:36Yeah, this is a really loud. No, it's fine.
- 4:39Just keep going. Okay.
- 4:40Just my kids are in the The other room play in the.
- 4:43We so sorry everybody. If you hear my kids?
- 4:48Yeah. It's just been a, it's been a
- 4:49busy summer and just church life is just, you know, just keeping
- 4:54us going and I got us doing some really cool things so excited
- 4:58about it. But yeah, it speaking of
- 5:01speaking of the wheat, John did, did you recently come in contact
- 5:04with a Nintendo 64? No, you didn't get it.
- 5:09I bought it. I got scammed on eBay.
- 5:11And so then I had to wait for eBay to refund my money.
- 5:14But I was, I was just disappointed.
- 5:18John, I was excited to hear about you playing gold 9.
- 5:20All that good. Oh, I have been.
- 5:21I've been found a way to do it on the computer and I got me
- 5:23like a little. It's like a N64 controller that
- 5:26plugs into your laptop. Nice.
- 5:28Yeah. So yeah.
- 5:31So, you know what? I, you know, I went, I fell in a
- 5:33rabbit hole of this thing. I know that people love to hear
- 5:36about this awful. Rabbit Hole.
- 5:37There are actually game developers out there that have
- 5:40taken, the template of GoldenEye and taken former James Bond
- 5:43movies and made complete games. No way.
- 5:46Yes, no. It's so cool.
- 5:47So they've got one on the spy. Who loved me.
- 5:49They got one on the Tomorrow. Never Dies.
- 5:52The movie that came out after golden eye, and they got one on
- 5:54the on the Sean Connery, maybe Goldfinger, and there's
- 5:57currently they're working on one for the Timothy Dalton Living
- 6:01Daylights. Oh my goodness.
- 6:03And it's just like playing GoldenEye just with different
- 6:05missions. That is all.
- 6:06Awesome. We're gonna oh, man.
- 6:13Well, this is what me and John's wife is, I've had as well.
- 6:16I busy summer, we have been straight in Ministry, we were in
- 6:20California, we had back-to-back camps.
- 6:23We had Vacation Bible School. It's been been very busy for us,
- 6:28but school has started back for my family, and so my schedule is
- 6:31open back up a little bit, and we are excited about what God's
- 6:35got in store for our Lives in our family, just continue to
- 6:39pray for us. Hey, you did come and see me I
- 6:42did. I was with John for a day for a
- 6:44day, and when you taught me really cool card game, yeah, we
- 6:48went to don't be an idiot. Yeah, we went to Dollywood for
- 6:53my son's birthday and then I said, I was actually on my son's
- 6:57birthday and I gave him a choice.
- 6:58I said, Brody, I said, do you want to stay in Dollywood for
- 7:02another day? Or do you want to go?
- 7:04See Uncle John, your birthday and his choice was He wanted to
- 7:07go see Uncle John, his birthday and so we drove an extra couple
- 7:11hours went to a Bucky's. Some of you guys saw that on the
- 7:13RFP fan page and then spent the night with John and his family
- 7:18and my family. And then we had a great time
- 7:21there, so, yeah, it was good, it was a good time and glad to be
- 7:25home and glad to get back into routine.
- 7:27I'm a routine guy. I do not.
- 7:29Let my routine messed up. So John, we've got some great
- 7:33things coming up for this next season of the podcast.
- 7:36Has been a great break, just a couple of weeks ago, we were
- 7:40able to fill in for the RFP. The the main guys podcast us and
- 7:46the young Baptist partner together and did a phenomenal
- 7:50episode probably the best episode that's ever been
- 7:52recorded in the history of podcast episode.
- 7:55Don't you love how after we do that?
- 7:57They do an interview with John Cooper.
- 7:59Man. That was just the, I think they
- 8:01did that. Just on purpose because they
- 8:02knew we were. Yeah, that was a punch to the
- 8:04gut Youth and culture. Yeah.
- 8:06Was hey, but go over there, listen to that and just so you
- 8:11can know. We have lined up the youth and
- 8:13culture we've lined up grow in Grace and we've lined up beers
- 8:16and bibles for a wonderful crossover event.
- 8:20Three different episodes that we're going to be doing, we're
- 8:23going to continue that crossover series that we did and have
- 8:26those those guys and girls on and that's going to all lead up
- 8:30to John what big events coming up in November Thanksgiving.
- 8:35Thanksgiving the time, will we get?
- 8:36Eat and celebrate our gluttony and that is what we are looking
- 8:41forward to it. Now, the for the sake of the
- 8:44Gospel Conference with the RFP family and the RFP network is
- 8:48going to be there. And so this is going to be the
- 8:50first ever conference with the recovering fundamentalist
- 8:55podcast. And so, we're looking forward to
- 8:58it, it's going to be a Thursday evening Friday and then Saturday
- 9:01morning and so the lineup is going to be are recovering
- 9:05Fundamentalist. Host Nathan cravat and then
- 9:09Jared Wilson author Jared Wilson.
- 9:11And I think he's a professor of Midwestern seminary in Kansas
- 9:15City are going to be preaching. The first night, we're going to
- 9:18have worship music with hope worship.
- 9:22And then also JJ week span is going to be there.
- 9:27And so then you're going to have JC Groves and Mark me Leone,
- 9:32preach. And then we're going to have on
- 9:34Friday evening, Brian Edwards and Edwards preaching.
- 9:38And we're going to have some breakout sessions with the RFP
- 9:41Network involved. And I think Saturday morning, if
- 9:45those can stay for Saturday morning, they're going to have
- 9:47sort of a live think via with Stephen boys, dr.
- 9:53Stephen boys. And Jonathan Beasley.
- 9:56And I don't know, I've sort of, they did that episode on RFP.
- 10:00And I downloaded Stephen voices, podcast, facts, and I've been
- 10:04listening to that stuff. What am I?
- 10:06My things that I just absolutely love to just you know, side
- 10:10Hobbies is canonicity of scripture and so I really enjoy
- 10:15listening his stuff on that, but yeah, so it's $50.
- 10:19We want you to register, you go to RFP dot org and you can find
- 10:22the registration from that page, it's 50 bucks, 50 bucks for the
- 10:25registration, you come and worship with us.
- 10:28Have a good time and I know you're going to be edified and
- 10:30lift it up there. Yeah.
- 10:32And when we say conference, a lot of times we get this
- 10:35mysticism that. Going to come and it's going to
- 10:38be like a meet-up, feel, we're going to be there, we're going
- 10:41to hang out, we're all going to be together.
- 10:43What we want to do is we want to bring our recording equipment
- 10:47and we're going to try to record some of you guys, some of your
- 10:50stories. We really enjoyed doing that in
- 10:51Missouri. And so we hope we can get a
- 10:54couple of good interviews lined up while we were there during
- 10:58some lunch or dinner sessions and so it's going to be a great
- 11:00time. Hopefully you'll come join us
- 11:02for that and I'm looking forward to spending a couple days with
- 11:06John's been a couple of days with the network and enjoying
- 11:10that time there. Well we have changed some of the
- 11:14roles here on the podcast coming up John with his business of
- 11:18pastoring and family and John's bi-vocational.
- 11:21So he's not full time at the church and so his time with
- 11:25counseling has gotten away from him.
- 11:28So what we're going to be doing is we're flipping roles and I am
- 11:31going to begin doing all of the behind-the-scenes, legwork
- 11:35lining up interviews. The show notes editing and
- 11:38producing the episodes and John's going to be my co-host.
- 11:42No, I'm still going to be the co-host.
- 11:43John's the, the brainchild of all this, but we are going to
- 11:48reverse this a little bit. So in doing that we've like I
- 11:52said earlier, we've lined up the crossover episodes.
- 11:54We are lining up for next week for our next recording.
- 11:58We're going to be recording with Jonathan Smith out of Faith,
- 12:01Lafayette, biblical, counseling Coalition up there and we're
- 12:05doing an interview with him called Are you hooked and hooked
- 12:08on social media and how to become unhooked from social
- 12:12media? And so it's going to be a great
- 12:13episode. We hope you'll tune in to that
- 12:15and he's doing some great stuff with NASA and other things.
- 12:20We're going to be talking through some topics of worry,
- 12:22anxiety, fear, just some basic counseling stuff.
- 12:27And, and we've got some other interviews that were looking at
- 12:30with possibly. Well, I'm not going to mention
- 12:34their names because we haven't confirmed them.
- 12:36But we do have some of those guys that we were working on
- 12:39trying to get them lined up and so but today John we were
- 12:43presented a question and we do love your response, we love your
- 12:47feedback and so we're going to jump right into it today.
- 12:50Well, one of the last episodes we did before we took our break
- 12:52was on biblical counseling like what is biblical counseling and
- 12:56sort of breaking some of those things down.
- 12:58And and so we had, somebody did send something push back.
- 13:02I got permission from them to sort of talk about this and I do
- 13:05understand that they're not. Here to sort of I mean this is
- 13:10going to be us responding to this pushback but at the same
- 13:15time they're not going to be here to add feedback to it.
- 13:18So we want to be as kind and courteous as we can and not sort
- 13:21of you know, just run away with it.
- 13:25But basically saying that the area that they agreed a little
- 13:31bit with Biblical counseling agree with, with sufficiency of
- 13:34scripture and But they sort of take a more integrated approach
- 13:39and he said, the area that they would push back on with on what
- 13:45we said is in the way that we express the sufficiency of
- 13:48scripture I absolutely believe and stand for the sufficiency of
- 13:54scripture. However, while the Bible is
- 13:56absolutely sufficient for everything in addresses, there
- 14:00are many things that God did not place in scripture and leaves
- 14:03man to study and come up with answers for example.
- 14:06See, if scripture does it mean that you can read the Bible to
- 14:09become a cardiac surgeon or a computer engineer and I would
- 14:13view the human brain and the same in the same way.
- 14:16There are many areas where the Bible simply does it give the
- 14:21answer to many psychological problems or phenomena for those,
- 14:26a good study of psychology is necessary to provide many
- 14:30aspects of counseling that are not in scripture.
- 14:33Now, having said that I absolutely appreciate anybody
- 14:36who studies And seeks to counsel people who need it.
- 14:43So, draw a map for you. I'm a pastor and I often counsel
- 14:47people likely in the same way that you would from scripture.
- 14:50However, understanding the human mind, its influences, health and
- 14:53sociological factors and more integrated.
- 14:56Hence, the term with revelation of scripture, I believe can
- 14:59provide a more well-rounded counseling approach.
- 15:03Love to hear your thoughts. Alright, so number And I can
- 15:08tend to be a little bit excited polemical, maybe in this area.
- 15:14So if I come across too strong, forgive me.
- 15:18I just do because I'm very passionate about this subject
- 15:22and there are certain aspects of what he said that.
- 15:25I think maybe he misunderstood us a little bit because we do
- 15:28believe in the belief of common Grace, right.
- 15:32That God has given common Grace to.
- 15:36D to observe truth in his creation.
- 15:39We don't believe that doctors or surgeons that study medicine and
- 15:44study the body have to be Believers.
- 15:48We don't believe that every scientist can make a true
- 15:52observation about creation and but must be a believer
- 15:57therefore, when it comes to psychology can unbelievers, make
- 16:03true observations about The Human Condition The answer will
- 16:07you would say would be yes the problem with it is is that you
- 16:13have to understand that they're interpreting that information
- 16:16after they observe it through a world view grid.
- 16:21That is devoid of God, and devoid of the effects of the
- 16:26fall on Humanity. Therefore, the aspects that are
- 16:30coming. They're coming away with in the
- 16:31solutions that they're coming away with our very much marred
- 16:35and flawed and In some cases unbiblical.
- 16:42James, you have anything to add before I move on.
- 16:44Yeah. Well, as we talk through this,
- 16:46really, I want to break this. This question down into two
- 16:49separate questions. The first can scripture help us
- 16:53become a surgeon and I think you address that well, scripture
- 16:57cannot help you become in the sense of it, cannot teach you to
- 17:01be a space. Exploration of just cannot teach
- 17:03you a brain surgeon but what it does it gives us the foundation
- 17:07for what like you said, your worldview, it gives us the
- 17:10foundation for what we Can build our life on it, so that's what
- 17:14we're saying. When it comes to the sufficiency
- 17:17of scripture in this sense is yes, there is that common Grace
- 17:21John? Yes, there is this thought of we
- 17:23can we can observe nature. And let me Roman simply says
- 17:28that L can observe nature and observe the glory that God
- 17:32created through things. And so there is the common Grace
- 17:36aspect that builds on the foundation of this.
- 17:39So, yes to answer your question, the by, Bible.
- 17:42Can you cannot stay, I won't become a cardiologist surgeon.
- 17:45The Bible's not going to teach you how to open up someone's
- 17:47body surgery. It back together and become make
- 17:51party all just in that sense. But what it can do is it can
- 17:55help you. When you actually do become that
- 17:57cardiologist, you're going to be able to help those patients.
- 18:00So much greater was just your spiritual application in their
- 18:03lives. I don't know how many people
- 18:05that I've talked to even in our church that have had cancer
- 18:09situations or in surgery. And they said, you know, my
- 18:13doctor had this awesome opportunity where they said,
- 18:16hey, I'm a Believer I believe in Jesus and I believe in prayer
- 18:20and so I'm going to spend this time if it's okay with you to
- 18:22pray with you and pray over you and they were able to take this
- 18:26gift that God gave them to become a surgeon and use it for
- 18:29God's honor and glory. And I think that's where we get
- 18:32this view of scripture and how it can be sufficient in all
- 18:36areas. Okay?
- 18:37So what we believe is that the Bible is sufficient and How know
- 18:42this can be triggering to some ifb.
- 18:43People, those who come out of the ifb, but we believe the
- 18:47Bible. Sufficient for lat all matters
- 18:50of life and practice faith, and practice.
- 18:54That is not a bad stance that be that, that is a.
- 18:57That is a Biblical stance to be, because we see that the Bible is
- 19:00sufficient for life. And I think one matter of this,
- 19:06this subject, this conversation comes down with how you view.
- 19:11The makeup of a man is Mana, trichotomy or is man a
- 19:16dichotomy? So what do you mean by that?
- 19:19We has been made up of Body Soul and Spirit or has been made up
- 19:22of Body, Soul Spirit. Say what did you just say?
- 19:26The same thing? No I didn't.
- 19:28So there are many, who believe that man is made up of Body,
- 19:33Soul, and Spirit that you need medical doctors, take care of
- 19:35the body. You need spiritual matters and
- 19:41People who are Christians and have the care and discipleship,
- 19:47to take care of the spirit and that you need psychologist to
- 19:52take care of the Soul. All right, I would disagree with
- 19:55that emphatically. Say that man is a dichotomy and
- 20:00that means that man is a body and man is soul or Spirit, OK?
- 20:06Meaning Soul or spirit. I believe when you go to
- 20:08scripture Old Testament and New And you do a deep dive into
- 20:12this. You find out that the the when
- 20:15the words Soul and Spirit are used to describe man and his
- 20:21makeup, they are used interchangeably.
- 20:23Therefore man is a dichotomy. So we are given those with
- 20:27medical practice and medical knowledge to help with the body,
- 20:31but we're given God's word and the Holy Spirit to help with the
- 20:34soul, or the spirit. Now, the that I don't have a
- 20:38problem in the world with psychology James.
- 20:41I don't have a problem to wear with psychology, I think
- 20:43psychology should stay in their Lane.
- 20:47I think psychology should be scientist who study the brain.
- 20:52However, they don't stay in their Lane, they actually will
- 20:55take their observations and study the brain.
- 20:57And then they started to go out there and make interpretations
- 21:00of those and then try to say, you know, do this and this.
- 21:03And that's where I have an issue with that's where we butt heads
- 21:06because I believe that we have the solutions for men.
- 21:09What is man and what is man's greatest?
- 21:11Just need not only we have that. Now when it comes to I think
- 21:16there's also a misunderstanding, the culture as a whole has been
- 21:20so wholly, accepting of this practice without any question or
- 21:26push back. And I think the understanding
- 21:29the common understanding of what we actually know about the human
- 21:33brain is so small, so small. It is, it is, it is you think
- 21:40about the Vastness of the ocean, right?
- 21:43The vastness of the ocean, you think about how much we have
- 21:46explored and studied the like, and found out about the ocean
- 21:50and whenever you realize how much ocean there is and how much
- 21:52we've actually been able to explore.
- 21:55It's like less than 10%. Yeah, it's minut very, very much
- 21:59so. And I think the same has been
- 22:01done with the brain. I think.
- 22:02Because of different things in our culture today, people think
- 22:06that we've got the brain figured out, it's not even close.
- 22:11Was John has some and we just recently have this in our County
- 22:14we had a young lady, it was a teenager going into high school,
- 22:17she was going to her ninth grade year, it was a summer before
- 22:20last she had a four-wheeler accident, she was on the back of
- 22:24it. It flipped over, she landed on
- 22:25her head and it was touch and go for a long time and this was I
- 22:28can remember one reports of the doctor said we've seen this
- 22:32happen before we know that she's going to survive, we just don't
- 22:37know how much her actual brain is going to come back to
- 22:40wholeness. Okay, they've observed it,
- 22:43they've seen it, they've studied it.
- 22:45But they cannot tell you how much this is going to come out
- 22:49because we don't understand how the brain operates and how the
- 22:51brain repairs itself. We know when we cut a piece of
- 22:55skin on our body, how it's going to repair itself, we can observe
- 22:58it because it's physical but the brain is something that we
- 23:02cannot observe in that sense. And I think that's what you're
- 23:04getting. Well, the reason is is because
- 23:07in order to study the brain, You have to take pieces samples of
- 23:12it, you have to cut into it but what we know is that whenever
- 23:15you do that you're you're causing brain damage to the
- 23:18person. So the only type of brain study
- 23:21that we did and that's considered very inhumane.
- 23:24Right? So the only study that's been
- 23:27able to been done on that is post-mortem.
- 23:31But that even right there is, is a big hindrance to that because
- 23:37we're able to like there's no life going on in the brain.
- 23:40Of what's going on. Yeah, a big huge misconception
- 23:45that is out there to give an example of what I'm talking
- 23:49about here. I can talk about the DSM, I can
- 23:52talk about this, but the thing about this James, what is a
- 23:56theory? A theory is something that
- 23:59someone has rode out. They think is going to happen,
- 24:02but yet it's not proven to be exact for it.
- 24:05Exactly. A theory, is something an idea
- 24:08or concept of somebody coming. Comes up with that has not been
- 24:12proven. Now, there are two possible
- 24:14results for a theory, right? A theory could be proven true or
- 24:19a theory could be proven untrue but until either of those
- 24:23happens is still a theory. Yeah.
- 24:25All right, here's what happens. So many times in our culture, a
- 24:29theory is placed out there and because there's money to be made
- 24:33on a theory. I know you guys are going to be
- 24:34like oh he's gone in the conspiracy theorist.
- 24:36He's gone fundamentalist, listen to.
- 24:40Because I'm telling you the truth here because there's money
- 24:44to be made on a theory. It is presented to the culture
- 24:48as scientific fact case in point.
- 24:51Have you ever heard James of someone saying that we there are
- 24:55many people who have chemical imbalances.
- 24:59Oh yeah, lots of times. Okay.
- 25:02This is the theory. It was originated in the 50s.
- 25:05The theory is that the reason that much A lot of people suffer
- 25:09from Depression or even a later on in the 70s anxiety was thrown
- 25:14in there and schizophrenia was thrown in there was because
- 25:17there are imbalances and chemicals of the brain, whether
- 25:21it be norepi F norepinephrine, dopamine serotonin with
- 25:26depression, it was a serotonin deficiency.
- 25:30Okay, that was the theory through the use of
- 25:37pharmaceutical medicines and Article drugs and big Pharmacy
- 25:43companies. Now that theory has become.
- 25:46Cultural fact, people believe that the chemical imbalance idea
- 25:51is fact, some people just have a chemical imbalance.
- 25:53Why did somebody go shoot up a theater?
- 25:56Why does somebody go shoot up a school?
- 25:57Well, they have a chemical imbalance.
- 25:59There's something wrong in their mind.
- 26:01Okay, I'm going to recommend a book for you.
- 26:05For our listeners, go read the chemical imbalance.
- 26:10And by dr. Daniel Berger, this guy does not
- 26:12quote a Christian. Once in this book, he only
- 26:16quotes secular psychologist. This theory has been proven
- 26:23false. It's a it's a never existed.
- 26:27We do not have a chemical, there is not a single person, has a
- 26:30chemical imbalance and the idea is that in order for you to have
- 26:35a chemical imbalance, there must be a balance Of what those
- 26:41chemicals should be. They've never been able to
- 26:43figure out as test that standard.
- 26:45In fact, their best scientific studies to this day.
- 26:49Have concluded. That probably every single
- 26:52person has a different balance of chemicals, then the next
- 26:56person. Yeah but they have no idea what
- 26:58that balance is. So how can you know, if somebody
- 27:01has an imbalance of something, if you cannot test or gauge the
- 27:05balance of something? Now here's the other idea, let's
- 27:08say if somebody did have an imbalance How would you
- 27:11determine and confirm that they would have an imbalance
- 27:13scientifically you take a sample, right?
- 27:17Yeah. But there's no test to do that
- 27:19because to do that, you'd have to drill into the brain and take
- 27:23a biopsy of the brain and try to test those chemicals.
- 27:27That is illegal. It's called a lobotomy, and you
- 27:30cannot practice that anymore. So there's no way number one to
- 27:33determine whether there is what the balance is.
- 27:36And there's no way to confirm that you have an imbalance.
- 27:39So what happens? Is people go to doctors and they
- 27:42say I'm struggling with depression.
- 27:43Well, maybe you have a chemical imbalance, write you a
- 27:46prescription because they have a Prescription Pad backed.
- 27:49You want to talk about secular psychology many, some therapist
- 27:52and secular psychologists are angry at medical doctors because
- 27:57they're so quick to prescribe medicine to people and for
- 28:03chemical imbalances and they know don't even have training in
- 28:07Psychology but they have a scrip pad so they can do it.
- 28:11Okay, I know I get I get a little bit heated about this
- 28:14stuff, because here's what happens, they get up and they
- 28:19people start taking medicine. That actually is messing with
- 28:22the chemical makeup of their brain.
- 28:25And there's a, there's a long discussion.
- 28:29We can have going into what that does.
- 28:33But let me let me go to this aspect.
- 28:36What about the DSM, right? The DSM is supposed to be the
- 28:39psychology Bible that we and such great information about
- 28:41diagnosis right there in the DSM-5.
- 28:44I think right now and they're working on the DSM 6.
- 28:47Okay, I just got through reading a book by Vander.
- 28:52Kolk on the body keeps the score on trauma, he's not a Believer,
- 28:56he's not a Christian, but one of his biggest complaints about the
- 29:00DSM, as they had some times where they were trying to
- 29:02present evidence and studies of a diagnosis of trauma and the
- 29:06DSM rejected it because they Was a political motivation of
- 29:13changing it. Yeah.
- 29:14And there was too much money to be made on the DSM and then he
- 29:17records. How much money is made?
- 29:19Each time they put out a DSM and it's a huge.
- 29:22I mean, multi multi millions of dollars that bring that they
- 29:26bring in from publishing a DSM. And so the here's the think
- 29:31about this in the DSM. One homosexuality was considered
- 29:34a disorder. Now, it's completely changed and
- 29:41it's not no longer seen as a disorder, but should be
- 29:45accepted. I wonder why that is.
- 29:50It's not science. It's culture and it goes back.
- 29:54John, what is their Foundation? What is it?
- 29:56What is their worldview? Where are they basing?
- 29:59All of their information from and if you're basing it from
- 30:02culture, if you're basing it from where there's money to be
- 30:05made, all of a sudden, now, we turn into.
- 30:08Well, this isn't culturally accepted anymore.
- 30:10So we've got to change the standard.
- 30:12God's word doesn't change the standard.
- 30:16God's word never changes the same yesterday today and
- 30:19forever. Exactly right.
- 30:21The DSM is always changing. One of the things I love and I'm
- 30:24reading right now, was given to me by a friend of mine, William
- 30:27Berger, a Puritan reformer and some of the things that he's
- 30:33saying, as he's going through his life, this was in the 1500s
- 30:36are applicable today because his scripture reading the same
- 30:40description. I'm getting the same
- 30:41application. I'm getting the same theology
- 30:43from it because scripture doesn't Change.
- 30:46Now, I would dare say John if I went and I read a 1500, which
- 30:50there wouldn't have been a psychology back in the 1500s,
- 30:52but if there would have been a psychology manual in the 1500s,
- 30:56would it be the exact same today as it was five, six hundred
- 31:00years now. No, because here's here's the
- 31:02thing that not only is the DSM changed, but the DSM is changing
- 31:09is more influenced many times by culture than it is science.
- 31:14Yeah. So I asked the Ian, what could
- 31:16possibly because of culture wind up on the DSM in the future as a
- 31:22disorder. S-something Christians, need to
- 31:28think about. Yeah and and you know this this
- 31:34aspect of it changing, the Bible does not change.
- 31:38Like you said, scripture, does it change, okay.
- 31:42And think about it this way. James, many of what's
- 31:45considered, psychological problems and phenomena, are
- 31:48observations, made by unbelievers with an unbiblical
- 31:51worldview, who have no grid to interpret the fall of Man.
- 31:56The fall on the Falls effects on creation sin.
- 32:01And so, they're trying to interpret the problems and
- 32:04phenomena. They see without that kind of
- 32:07grid, you know, a Critic may say, oh, are you saying to
- 32:10everybody's problem is sin? Yes and no no I'm not saying to
- 32:16everybody that sits in a counseling room.
- 32:18That their problem is that they just need to repent of their
- 32:21sin. Some do But in a sense, yes, I
- 32:25am saying that everybody's problem is the CM because when
- 32:27you look at the effect of the fall on all of Creations, Roman
- 32:328, Romans 8 says that all of creation groan.
- 32:36Yeah, it is only through a Biblical worldview that we
- 32:39understand. Here it is man and man's
- 32:42greatest need. I mean, I could go on for a long
- 32:46time on this but I think that I appreciate the, the, the
- 32:51listeners short of concern and I think, Maybe I can come across a
- 32:55little bit too harsh on the subject, but I mean, what it is,
- 33:00is, I do believe that their observations that we can learn.
- 33:04All right, there are observations that we can glean
- 33:07from about the human condition, but I think we've got to be very
- 33:11Discerning. And we've got to be very
- 33:13skeptical about where it goes from there.
- 33:17Yep. And I think really what gives
- 33:20down to. And we've said this several
- 33:21times, we say this often hear when we begin dealing with the
- 33:26issues of someone's life, anorexia anxiety.
- 33:30Depression. We've got to get to the heart of
- 33:33the problem and that's what scripture does.
- 33:35Scripture gets to the heart of the problem that's dealing with
- 33:37someone's life or psychology just wants to fix it and give
- 33:41them a pill and move on. Well, that's it in a nutshell.
- 33:45I'm saying in a nutshell. I would say that I had one of my
- 33:50complaints is similar to what you just said, but I don't want
- 33:54to lump all of them in. Yeah.
- 33:56There are there are many out there that genuinely are trying
- 34:00to help people, but I think that they've been misled, but what
- 34:05our goal is, as counselors biblical counselors, we want to
- 34:09get to the heart of the problem. We want to use scripture and
- 34:12say, okay, how did Jesus deal with this situation?
- 34:15How did Jesus get to the heart of this problem?
- 34:17And solve it from that side of you.
- 34:20And so that's sort of where we're at.
- 34:21So I told you we wouldn't be long.
- 34:23We just wanted to give a basic talk and go through this and
- 34:28then we'll begin some of these interviews and some of the other
- 34:30things coming up. And so we're excited about what
