- 0:12Hello friends. It's shown here.
- 0:15It is Easter Monday. It is the first of a new month.
- 0:19Christ is risen. This is when you say He is
- 0:23risen, indeed. Ready.
- 0:24Let's try it again. Christ is risen.
- 0:28He is risen indeed. So great to have you company.
- 0:32Ah, thank you for joining me on this.
- 0:34Probably a public holiday for most of you, but a chance for us
- 0:39to celebrate the glorious, glorious, glorious moment of
- 0:44Easter Sunday. Yes, today we get to finish
- 0:49reading the book of Mark together, which shares the very,
- 0:52very good news. Now, the whole of Mark has been
- 0:56this incredibly quick journey when Mark is telling the story.
- 1:00Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, one point after the other.
- 1:02And the ending of Mark is no different.
- 1:05He he doesn't go into a huge amount of detail, but he ends
- 1:09with the women fleeing the tomb trembled and not wanting to tell
- 1:13anyone what they'd seen and, well, the first number of
- 1:18manuscripts, that's where it ends.
- 1:21And then in language that doesn't match the rest of the
- 1:25gospel, and in manuscripts, which came a bunch later, there
- 1:30are another few verses which go on to tell the rest of the
- 1:34story. And well, the general consensus
- 1:37is that they were added later because it seemed a little bit
- 1:40of a of an unfortunate and sad way to end with these women not
- 1:44telling anyone what that happened because they were so
- 1:47frightened. But one theory that I quite like
- 1:49is that Mark finished his gospel this way because frankly, he
- 1:55wanted us Jesus disciples to know that actually this is our
- 1:59work to go and share the good news, to tell people that Jesus
- 2:03is risen. So I'm happy to cop that and
- 2:06take it and that be my challenge.
- 2:08But for the fullness of this chapter, I'm going to read the
- 2:11whole chapter and you can make your decision for yourself what
- 2:14you think happened. But we're going to read it all,
- 2:17our friends. This is the day when we
- 2:19celebrate that our Lord conquered death and did that all
- 2:24so that we can know that we are loved and that we can come
- 2:29before God forgiven. And Hull.
- 2:32Yeah, friend, that's you. That's me.
- 2:35That is the gift of Easter. So with all that said and done
- 2:39with great excitement in our hearts, let's finish the story.
- 2:43Well, it's not at all the end, but it's the end of the Gospel
- 2:47narratives. So let us read it together.
- 2:49Mark Chapter 16 Saturday evening when the
- 3:04Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and
- 3:09Salome, went out and purchased burial spices so they could
- 3:13anoint Jesus body. Very early on Sunday morning,
- 3:17just at sunrise, they went to the tomb.
- 3:21On the way they were asking each other who will roll away the
- 3:24stone for us from the entrance of the tomb.
- 3:27But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which
- 3:32was very large, had already been rolled aside.
- 3:37When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a
- 3:40white robe sitting on the right side.
- 3:43The women were shocked, but the Angel said don't be alarmed.
- 3:48You were looking for Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified.
- 3:52He isn't here. He is risen from the dead.
- 3:57Look, this is where they laid his body.
- 4:01Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is
- 4:06going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as
- 4:10he told you. Before he died.
- 4:14The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and
- 4:18they said nothing to anyone because they were too
- 4:22frightened. After Jesus rose from the dead
- 4:29early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was
- 4:33Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven
- 4:37demons. She went to the disciples, who
- 4:39were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened.
- 4:43But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen
- 4:46him and didn't believe her afterward, he appeared in a
- 4:51different form to two of his followers who were walking from
- 4:54Jerusalem to the country. They rushed back to tell the
- 4:57others that no one believed them.
- 5:01Still later, He appeared to the 11 disciples as they were eating
- 5:05together. He rebuked them for their
- 5:07stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had
- 5:11seen him after he had been raised from the dead.
- 5:15And then he told them, go into all the world and preach the
- 5:19good news to everyone. Anyone who believes and is
- 5:23baptised will be saved, but anyone who refuses to believe
- 5:28will be condemned. These miraculous signs will
- 5:31accompany those who believe. They will cast out demons in my
- 5:35name. They will speak in new
- 5:37languages, they will be able to handle snakes with safety, and
- 5:42if they drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them.
- 5:46They will be able to place their hands on the sick and they will
- 5:50be healed. When the Lord Jesus had finished
- 5:54talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in
- 5:58the place of honour at God's right hand.
- 6:02And the disciples went everywhere and preached, And the
- 6:05Lord worked through them, confirming what they said.
- 6:10By many miraculous signs you are risen.
- 6:23Indeed, Jesus, death could not hold you down.
- 6:29You are stronger, more mighty than any other force in this
- 6:35universe. Even the forces of life and
- 6:38death and decay, the things that we think are unavoidable, are
- 6:44all within your grasp and your hands.
- 6:48That's the Almighty Creator of all Jesus.
- 6:54You went through all of this and out the other side, risen back
- 6:58to glory, to prepare a way to carve out a path so that we,
- 7:08through your death and your resurrection today, can stand
- 7:14wholly and blameless before the throne of the Most High God.
- 7:21Thank you, Jesus. Here we are with you, with your
- 7:25Spirit dwelling in us all, thanks to you and all that
- 7:29you've done for us. You are the Most wonderful, the
- 7:34Most High, most precious. We love you and we praise you,
- 7:42and it's in your name that we live, we breathe and we pray all
- 7:46these things. Ah man.
