Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I think it was really the first film that I
- 0:01Speaker 1: saw as a kid that made me really believe, Hey,
- 0:05Speaker 1: you know, you don't have to explain everything to an audience.
- 0:08Speaker 2: You know, actually, in fact, you don't have explained anything
- 0:11Speaker 2: at all.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Yeah, hello, and welcome to Made the Review Be with
- 0:16Speaker 1: You with Nick and jo I'm Joe and Nick. And
- 0:21Speaker 1: today today on May the Review Bee with You, we
- 0:24Speaker 1: are coming back to our time travel draft. It has
- 0:29Speaker 1: been a minute and we're very excited for it. Today
- 0:33Speaker 1: on our time travel Draft, we're covering Donnie Darko, beloved
- 0:37Speaker 1: classic from two thousand. Strange Strange movie. But man, is
- 0:42Speaker 1: it fun to talk about. Nick, We have a lot
- 0:48Speaker 1: to talk about. But before we actually dive into any
- 0:52Speaker 1: any of this, we should probably explain for anyone who
- 0:55Speaker 1: is new to this, what is the time travel draft?
- 0:58Speaker 1: So would would you be so kind?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Sure?
- 1:01Speaker 3: So, Joe and I a little bit, a little bit ago,
- 1:04Speaker 3: I don't know, almost coming up on a year. This
- 1:06Speaker 3: is kind of our series that we do in between
- 1:08Speaker 3: new releases of TV and film. So to keep us
- 1:11Speaker 3: kind of busy, we each took turns drafting time travel movies.
- 1:16Speaker 2: That fit into specific categories.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And yeah, we are currently on the superhero time travel category.
- 1:25Speaker 3: And so Joe's pick during this draft was Donny Dharko,
- 1:29Speaker 3: which we're going to talk about today. My pick was
- 1:32Speaker 3: X Men Days of Future Past, which we're going to
- 1:34Speaker 3: talk about at some point in the near future. And
- 1:38Speaker 3: that's a time travel draft, and that's where we're at today.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, we need more curiosity on what is on our
- 1:44Speaker 1: list on our respected drafts. Go back into our time
- 1:48Speaker 1: travel draft playlist that Nick is organized, and you can
- 1:52Speaker 1: start from the draft and you can catch up on
- 1:55Speaker 1: the movies that we've rated so far, as well as
- 1:57Speaker 1: the scoring that's been allotted out to both of us
- 2:02Speaker 1: per movie. I think I don't remember the exact score
- 2:05Speaker 1: right now, but I'm pretty sure Nick is winning our
- 2:06Speaker 1: time travel draft at the moment. And I don't think
- 2:10Speaker 1: today is gonna do be any favors in catching me up.
- 2:14Speaker 3: This is this is gonna be tragic for you. This
- 2:18Speaker 3: is just gonna be tragic for Joff. We do you
- 2:20Speaker 3: should explain the ratings maybe if you want to, Well.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Right, that's great. So a crucial part of the time
- 2:26Speaker 1: travel draft is, of course, how we are going to
- 2:28Speaker 1: score each other on these movies. And we're breaking our
- 2:31Speaker 1: ratings down into three separate categories, and the being those
- 2:36Speaker 1: being how the movie actually performs, you know, whether or
- 2:40Speaker 1: not the movie's premise actually makes sense and it is
- 2:43Speaker 1: a good movie. Right, We're starting from there. Then from
- 2:45Speaker 1: that point we judge it based on the time travel mechanic.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Is the time travel is it all just a bunch
- 2:51Speaker 1: of bullshit? Or does the time travel movie actually justify
- 2:56Speaker 1: why we are moving through time? And then finally we
- 3:00Speaker 1: are talking about whether or not the movie fit in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the category it was drafted in. And again as a reminder,
- 3:07Speaker 1: today's category is Superhero time travel movie. So before we begin,
- 3:15Speaker 1: just a quick call to subscribe. Guys, if you like
- 3:18Speaker 1: the content that we're putting out here, if this is
- 3:19Speaker 1: the sort of thing that you're into, hit subscribe, Hit
- 3:22Speaker 1: that bell so you can keep up to date with
- 3:24Speaker 1: what we are doing here on the channel. Everything every
- 3:28Speaker 1: bit of support help, So thank you so much for
- 3:30Speaker 1: those who do. Now onto business, so here on, May
- 3:35Speaker 1: of the review be with you. We like to kick
- 3:37Speaker 1: things off with our films with a quick fifteen second summary,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and I believe it is next turn now belove tradition
- 3:44Speaker 1: where we embarrass ourselves in trying to summarize a movie
- 3:48Speaker 1: as fast as we can in fifteen seconds. And it's
- 3:52Speaker 1: next turn. As I said, Nick, how you doing? How
- 3:54Speaker 1: you feeling?
- 3:55Speaker 3: That's gonna be? This is gonna be and this is
- 3:57Speaker 3: gonna be miserable. Like you couldn't even ask the director
- 3:59Speaker 3: to some rises in a year, so like you know,
- 4:03Speaker 3: this is gonna be there, this's gonna be rough.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I like he didn't like, what was it twenty eight days?
- 4:07Speaker 1: He didn't twenty eight days? Got the whole movie done? Well?
- 4:11Speaker 1: Donne did? I don't know. I don't know how fast
- 4:13Speaker 1: Richard Kelly did.
- 4:15Speaker 3: There's no way this was filmed twenty eight maybe maybe
- 4:19Speaker 3: maybe twenty eight days. What is it? Six hours, forty
- 4:25Speaker 3: two minutes, six seconds?
- 4:29Speaker 1: You're so close, Yeah, it's twelve seconds. I'm I'm impressed.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I didn't think you would remember that.
- 4:36Speaker 3: It's very important to the time travel of this whole film.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Just kidding. Actually it's a little it's a little important.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I guess. All right, just count me in.
- 4:46Speaker 1: All right, So I've got I've got our stop watch.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Nick, are you ready for the fifteen second summary of
- 4:52Speaker 3: Donny Darko?
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yes, yes, sir, yeah, sure? All right? When I say
- 4:56Speaker 1: go three, two one go.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Donny Darko is a teenager in nineteen eighty eight, I think,
- 5:01Speaker 3: and he's either schizophrenic or a time traveler, We're not sure.
- 5:04Speaker 3: But he gets a message from a weird, crazy looking
- 5:06Speaker 3: rabbit that the world is gonna end in twenty eight days,
- 5:08Speaker 3: so he has to go on this like whole journey
- 5:09Speaker 3: to save the world before he gets killed by a
- 5:12Speaker 3: airplane engine. Let's go.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Tell me about that.
- 5:18Speaker 3: That was immaculate.
- 5:21Speaker 1: May I was like, the best summary I think you've
- 5:23Speaker 1: ever done, and it was for a movie you didn't
- 5:24Speaker 1: want to watch.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I did want to watch it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I like, I'm feeling a lot of negativity over here
- 5:31Speaker 1: on my pick.
- 5:32Speaker 2: There's no negativity.
- 5:33Speaker 3: It's just that you're just not gonna score very well
- 5:36Speaker 3: when it comes to the time travel and.
- 5:37Speaker 1: The explanation about you see this what I'm talking about.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I want nothing but stellar positivity from you about how like,
- 5:43Speaker 1: how great of a movie at a time you had
- 5:47Speaker 1: with such a beloved class.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I do love that. I do love this film.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But when we're talking about time travel, there's a colt
- 5:52Speaker 3: that I got some questions and there's not a lot
- 5:55Speaker 3: of answers.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I assure you everything can be explained in this movie.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I sure we want.
- 6:01Speaker 2: To see, But how about my summary? Give give me
- 6:03Speaker 2: my A plus?
- 6:05Speaker 1: This? Yeah, like Nick, this is I think this is
- 6:08Speaker 1: the I think this is the first eight plus I'm
- 6:10Speaker 1: giving you. I don't think I've ever given you one before.
- 6:12Speaker 3: That was a really good summary, Actually it was.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It was the best summary you've ever done A plus,
- 6:17Speaker 1: which I think that's only the second A plus that's
- 6:19Speaker 1: ever been awarded on this show. You should go back.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Usually our fifteen second summaries are tragedies. They're their genuine,
- 6:28Speaker 1: genuine f's. I think only there's only been one F.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I think I got it. Yeah, I don't remember what
- 6:33Speaker 1: it was for, but I definitely have an F on
- 6:35Speaker 1: my report card here.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I forget what that. I forget what yours was
- 6:38Speaker 3: for as well.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Up anyway, tune in next time to find out what
- 6:44Speaker 1: I've failed it in any case, Okay, so, Nick, that
- 6:49Speaker 1: was great. I don't think we actually have to dive
- 6:51Speaker 1: any deeper into summary here, except with the fact that
- 6:56Speaker 1: he does die right, and so he does say the world.
- 7:02Speaker 1: We'll get into that later. But this is I said.
- 7:07Speaker 1: It's a movie by Richard Kelly. It's from the two thousands,
- 7:10Speaker 1: from two thousand and when it first came out, I
- 7:13Speaker 1: don't think it was much. It made too much of
- 7:16Speaker 1: a blip on the radar. And it wasn't until about
- 7:18Speaker 1: maybe five or six years later where it really became
- 7:22Speaker 1: a cult classic. It started to become a cult classic.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It is a cult classic today and it's really gained
- 7:29Speaker 1: like a huge following as far as like the weirdness
- 7:33Speaker 1: of this movie. Feels like a lot of people love
- 7:36Speaker 1: to like talk about what they think happened in this movie.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But uh, Nick, let's start with you. What a what
- 7:44Speaker 1: did you like about this movie?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Oh, Jake Jillenhall like is phenomenal. He's and this is
- 7:51Speaker 3: he's so young when he when he filmed this, and
- 7:55Speaker 3: I mean it's it's so focused on his character, right,
- 7:58Speaker 3: I mean, he has insane amount screen time. I mean
- 8:01Speaker 3: the movie is literally titled after his character. So like
- 8:03Speaker 3: he he is, he's like in every scene, right, and
- 8:07Speaker 3: he's such a phenomenal job acting. And it's really just
- 8:14Speaker 3: enthralling and quirky and weird and strange and uncomfortable at times,
- 8:18Speaker 3: but like not the uncomfortable that makes you want to
- 8:20Speaker 3: turn it off. It's the uncomfortable that makes you like
- 8:22Speaker 3: really just like what is this kid doing and why?
- 8:28Speaker 3: So that's really just what stood out to me and
- 8:31Speaker 3: then and what I really liked, and of course some
- 8:32Speaker 3: other things that you you realize. You know, this comes
- 8:35Speaker 3: out in two thousand and one, and the cast is
- 8:38Speaker 3: pretty stellar, you know, like Maggie Gillenhall also in the
- 8:43Speaker 3: in the in the movie, Seth Rogan young, Seth Rogan
- 8:47Speaker 3: is in this film, like totally forgot about that. Patrick Swayze,
- 8:52Speaker 3: I mean young.
- 8:53Speaker 1: There's a young and very unimportant Ashdale in this movie too. Yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 1: there's so many young actors.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and so that was really cool. I always love
- 9:03Speaker 3: when we watch like older films because you know, like
- 9:05Speaker 3: those roles are not huge roles for those characters, for
- 9:08Speaker 3: those actors, and so you get to see them like
- 9:11Speaker 3: when they were really younger kind of starting out.
- 9:12Speaker 2: So that was fun.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah, how about you?
- 9:15Speaker 2: What's uh?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah, everything you said. I feel like if if I
- 9:23Speaker 1: had been an adult when this movie came out and
- 9:25Speaker 1: I saw Jake performing as a kid, have been like,
- 9:29Speaker 1: this guy's going somewhere. Uh No, he really is what
- 9:34Speaker 1: I think carries this movie in a lot of ways.
- 9:36Speaker 1: His performance, and then there's the strangeness of the film itself.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But like you said, you know, Donnie is most of
- 9:44Speaker 1: this movie, and yet the movie I think does a
- 9:46Speaker 1: really great job in creating this cast of characters that
- 9:50Speaker 1: are also quirky and interesting in this town that feels
- 9:53Speaker 1: very real, very believable and in a lot of ways.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And then you know, Frank the Rabbit is enigmatic and
- 10:01Speaker 1: terrifying and interesting and you want to know what the
- 10:03Speaker 1: hell is going on there? But uh, yeah, that's that's
- 10:08Speaker 1: sort of what I loved about it. I loved I
- 10:10Speaker 1: think it was really the first film that I saw
- 10:11Speaker 1: as a kid that made me really believe, Hey, you know,
- 10:15Speaker 1: you don't have to explain everything to an audience.
- 10:18Speaker 2: You know, in fact, you don't. You don't have explained
- 10:21Speaker 2: anything at all.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you're ship.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Unless you're watching the director's cut.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, in which case it like walks you through everything.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I do recommend anyone who has ever seen Donny Arca
- 10:35Speaker 1: like sort of liked it to watch the director's cut.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It does give some interesting insight into the movie. But uh, Nick,
- 10:42Speaker 1: what what uh? What didn't you like about Donnie Arco.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I don't know if there's it's really necessarily a dislike.
- 10:50Speaker 3: It's just that it's so jumbled in some ways, like
- 10:55Speaker 3: the writing and like and it's but it's to be,
- 11:00Speaker 3: but it's it's it's it borderline. It's borderline on like
- 11:05Speaker 3: confusing confusion to like almost the opposite of being entertaining,
- 11:12Speaker 3: because you're like nothing makes sense. And I was watching
- 11:16Speaker 3: the director's cut recently, right, like the theatrical version. I
- 11:21Speaker 3: mean it's like impossible in some ways to really kind
- 11:25Speaker 3: of think through it, at least on the first watch.
- 11:28Speaker 3: So that's not really a dislike. It's more just like
- 11:30Speaker 3: I guess, an observation. I will say, though I found
- 11:33Speaker 3: myself at multiple moments thinking, you can't say that anymore.
- 11:38Speaker 3: You can't say that there's some jobs there his friends,
- 11:42Speaker 3: his friend, Yeah, his friends say some things that you
- 11:45Speaker 3: just cannot do. Like that was like I was like,
- 11:47Speaker 3: oh man, early two thousands were insane time. Actually, this
- 11:53Speaker 3: reminds me the bully, not Seth Rogan, not him, but.
- 11:56Speaker 1: His his pal friend. Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I hated that character, like such an over like over
- 12:02Speaker 3: the top bully for a high schooler with it like
- 12:05Speaker 3: holding up the knife trying to like like multiple times
- 12:08Speaker 3: like that's not how bullies operate.
- 12:10Speaker 1: It just yeah, I actually agree with this. I think
- 12:13Speaker 1: his character, Yeah, he's so unstable and like I don't
- 12:18Speaker 1: understand what like, yeah, he he doesn't at any given time,
- 12:26Speaker 1: nothing he says really makes any sense.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and nor is it important to the story at all.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Like you can remove his character completely and it does
- 12:32Speaker 3: not have any effect on Donny Darko like at all.
- 12:37Speaker 3: And list in my opinion, that's like that's.
- 12:39Speaker 1: A good point. You can you can still have Gretchen
- 12:43Speaker 1: get killed by the car without without him being involved
- 12:46Speaker 1: in it whatsoever. Yeah, well okay, so maybe it's yeah, okay,
- 12:53Speaker 1: we can debate the ending here. But like he he
- 12:55Speaker 1: does sort of play it's it's a small role, and
- 12:58Speaker 1: it feels like you could amend this in the writing
- 13:00Speaker 1: prety easily. But I mean his role is he's stopping
- 13:03Speaker 1: Donnie from saving Gretchen, right, Gretchen's destiny is to be
- 13:08Speaker 1: hit by the car at least in that timeline, that's
- 13:13Speaker 1: what's supposed to happen, and he's threatening Donnie's life and
- 13:17Speaker 1: therefore Donnie can't get up and he can't go save her.
- 13:19Speaker 1: So like maybe like one of the I don't know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: we can get into it towards the end. But yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I agree, the bully character is weak, you know, at
- 13:28Speaker 1: least at least for me. I've never had this dislike
- 13:30Speaker 1: before until rewatching it recently. So I love Drew Barrymore's character,
- 13:35Speaker 1: but there are things about her character that like don't
- 13:38Speaker 1: make any sense to me. And I don't get how
- 13:42Speaker 1: she gets away with the sit next to whatever the
- 13:45Speaker 1: boy you think is cute as me? All right, this
- 13:49Speaker 1: is how you know it. This movie was written by
- 13:51Speaker 1: a man.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Can't do that.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yeah, this would never happen. I don't Maybe I missed
- 13:59Speaker 1: something or right, I didn't remember something. I don't really
- 14:02Speaker 1: get why she's being fired toward the end.
- 14:06Speaker 3: I think it's a curriculum thing. It's a curriculum thing
- 14:08Speaker 3: because she wants.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Okay, that's oh, that's right. It was the it was
- 14:11Speaker 1: the pornography and yeah, that's right. But yeah, we we
- 14:18Speaker 1: spend a lot of time with that character, and I
- 14:21Speaker 1: don't know. I think ultimately is to see that like
- 14:24Speaker 1: her life is going to hell, and like there's something
- 14:27Speaker 1: about the Donnie experience that like improves her life, but
- 14:30Speaker 1: I don't really see how. And again that's part of
- 14:34Speaker 1: the ending. We'll get into that later. I think ultimately,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I think I think for how mysterious this movie is
- 14:43Speaker 1: and how for how much it doesn't want to answer questions,
- 14:46Speaker 1: I think I think it's a very entertaining film. I
- 14:51Speaker 1: don't know if I regard it to be an extremely
- 14:54Speaker 1: good film. I think it's okay. I think the theatrical
- 14:59Speaker 1: version is like, just it's okay. Honestly, I think what
- 15:02Speaker 1: has kept it in the zeitgeist is just how mysterious
- 15:06Speaker 1: it is. Right, It's just a very mysterious plot. Yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and for that, I think it pulls that off very well.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Past that, I don't.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Know, Yeah, I agree. I think overall, from a film perspective,
- 15:17Speaker 3: it's it's not fantastic, right, It's interesting, but it's very interesting,
- 15:23Speaker 3: and it leaves so many questions that are fun to
- 15:25Speaker 3: talk about. And that's why you get the cold classic, right,
- 15:28Speaker 3: that's all you. That's also why people love talking about
- 15:31Speaker 3: Twelve Monkeys, although twelve Monkeys I think is a better
- 15:33Speaker 3: film overall, but there's a lot of question.
- 15:35Speaker 2: My point is the question.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Marks at the end of that movie are you're like, wait,
- 15:40Speaker 3: what just happened? Like, what's happening? How did we get here,
- 15:43Speaker 3: what is time travel? It's kind of similar here. It's
- 15:45Speaker 3: like you're just mind bending trying to figure out how
- 15:48Speaker 3: this all kind of pieces together.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And yeah, the twelve Monkeys is thingly never film ultimately
- 15:55Speaker 1: I think so.
- 15:56Speaker 3: But both, like I said, both really mind bending. And
- 16:01Speaker 3: if you're wondering what the hell we're talking about, go
- 16:02Speaker 3: back and watch our twelve Monkeys video.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Watch twelve Monkeys.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Absolutely, watch.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Is out order, watch your review, then watch twelve Monkeys.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Yeah, actually it might.
- 16:19Speaker 1: All right, Now onto the topic at hand here. This
- 16:22Speaker 1: is a time travel draft, uh movie, So we got
- 16:26Speaker 1: to talk about the time travel. Okay, So the time
- 16:29Speaker 1: travel is explained as follows. You need a metal craft,
- 16:34Speaker 1: you need to be moving faster than the speed of light,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and you need a portal and that's it, and you
- 16:39Speaker 1: can time travel and that's what happens. I feel like
- 16:44Speaker 1: of the movies that we got, this was the best
- 16:47Speaker 1: and simplest laid out time travel that we've received so far. Sure,
- 16:55Speaker 1: at lease the process does it execute the process? We
- 16:59Speaker 1: can talk about that we're going here. Yeah, but at
- 17:02Speaker 1: least for I think in what it's trying to communicate
- 17:05Speaker 1: is whereas why it's possible. I think it does an
- 17:10Speaker 1: effective job.
- 17:15Speaker 3: It does an effective job of telling us what we
- 17:17Speaker 3: need and then presenting those things, but does it show
- 17:19Speaker 3: us We don't even know how half of those things
- 17:22Speaker 3: even came to be. Plus, I don't know if we
- 17:26Speaker 3: want to start getting into this now.
- 17:28Speaker 2: But like, you.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Need the metal object, you need a portal, and you
- 17:33Speaker 3: need to be traveling faster than the speed of light. Well,
- 17:36Speaker 3: at the end of the film, Donnie doesn't have any
- 17:41Speaker 3: of those things on his possession.
- 17:42Speaker 1: No, that's not true. No he has one he has
- 17:45Speaker 1: or no he should he should have two. There's one
- 17:47Speaker 1: of those things though that I don't understand how he gets.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So the metal the metal vehicle is the car that
- 17:54Speaker 1: he's driving, Okay, And we know he's heading toward a portal.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's the twister that he sees in the distance. Right,
- 18:01Speaker 1: that that's the portal, the moving faster than the speed
- 18:04Speaker 1: of light. Okay, Now here's the BS of this movie. Okay,
- 18:06Speaker 1: So our our scientist is very rad cool physics professor
- 18:12Speaker 1: that he has at this school tells him about like theoretically,
- 18:16Speaker 1: if we're talking about don travel, this is how we
- 18:18Speaker 1: would happen, right, and at no point does this educated
- 18:22Speaker 1: scholar ever tell Donnie, is it it's impossible to move
- 18:28Speaker 1: faster than the speed of light based on the mechanics
- 18:31Speaker 1: that we have in our universe. Right, It's like, yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: that is how you would do it, but it's impossible.
- 18:38Speaker 1: But like he just lays it out there, He's just like, oh, yeah,
- 18:40Speaker 1: those are those are the basics of time travel. Everything
- 18:42Speaker 1: you need, except for this one very important thing.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Like I'm just saying, no, I mean, this is the
- 18:52Speaker 3: main problem with the time travel of Donny Darko.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really how he's going to move that fast
- 18:59Speaker 1: that is not uh explained. I have theories as to
- 19:02Speaker 1: you why that happened. But yeah, ultimately I would say
- 19:06Speaker 1: this is where the movie kind of drops them all
- 19:07Speaker 1: a bit as far as the time travel is concerned.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Explanation wise, it's almost great.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Uh, just trying to time travel. His camera back in
- 19:24Speaker 3: the focus.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so where do we start, I mean, as far
- 19:45Speaker 1: as the time travel goes or yeah, because.
- 19:48Speaker 3: It he's not traveling faster than the speed of light,
- 19:51Speaker 3: it's not possible. So that's a flaw, which.
- 19:54Speaker 1: But that's okay, all right, So here here's my theory
- 19:58Speaker 1: on that. Okay, the movie does an awful job in
- 20:03Speaker 1: showing us this. In fact, it doesn't. It just doesn't
- 20:06Speaker 1: show us this. It briefly gives us some glimpses as
- 20:11Speaker 1: to what is going on with Donnie. And this is
- 20:12Speaker 1: one of the reasons why I have drafted this movie
- 20:15Speaker 1: in the superhero category. A. He saves the world, but
- 20:17Speaker 1: be more importantly, Donnie has superpowers. And the movie, at
- 20:24Speaker 1: least the theatrical version, there's like maybe one or two
- 20:28Speaker 1: lines that actually you actually hear a reference of superpowers
- 20:34Speaker 1: being being made. The director's kind of directly tells you that,
- 20:37Speaker 1: like the subject of the Pocket universe, like has super strength,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and I forgot what else, but uh, there there's a
- 20:45Speaker 1: reference when he busts the pipes at the school with
- 20:49Speaker 1: the acts, when he slams the acts into the metal
- 20:54Speaker 1: statue of whatever the metal is. Yeah, the bronze bronze,
- 20:57Speaker 1: You're right, bronze statue. Someone say as that that's insane,
- 21:01Speaker 1: Like no one could have done that, right, which is
- 21:04Speaker 1: supposed to be an indicator of like Donnie has super strength, right,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and you know he does the whole thing of like Gretchen.
- 21:14Speaker 1: This is really where the movie hits you over the
- 21:15Speaker 1: head with it. Gretchen's like, Donnie Darko, what is that
- 21:19Speaker 1: some kind of superhero name?
- 21:21Speaker 3: Uh, that line right there is Jill's whole premise for
- 21:24Speaker 3: picking this in the superhero film category. Okay, that line
- 21:28Speaker 3: right there, just because he has just because he has
- 21:31Speaker 3: a double same.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Letter, Stanley, He's got the stan Lee formula. Donnie Darko,
- 21:37Speaker 1: Peter Parker, Matt Murdoch, Bruce Banner, Donnie Darko. But uh yeah,
- 21:45Speaker 1: So my theory here is Donnie's always had the ability
- 21:49Speaker 1: to move at the speed of light. Again, the movie
- 21:53Speaker 1: does not show you that. The movie does not tell
- 21:56Speaker 1: you that. We just know that Donnie has powers. Donnie
- 21:59Speaker 1: tells his psychologist, I have the power to build a
- 22:04Speaker 1: time machine, right which we know you have to be
- 22:07Speaker 1: moving past to the speed of light, and all it
- 22:09Speaker 1: takes is a metal vehicle. So I don't think it's
- 22:11Speaker 1: too much of a leap in that instance to say
- 22:14Speaker 1: that's the power that he's referring to. Again, I don't
- 22:19Speaker 1: think that's a great execution because this movie is relying
- 22:24Speaker 1: on tell me, don't show me, And I don't know
- 22:26Speaker 1: many people who are big fans of that. But I
- 22:30Speaker 1: think that's how it's possible.
- 22:33Speaker 3: So I have a complete opposite theory that has not
- 22:39Speaker 3: been made with time travel at all.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Interesting. So, oh, do you think it's all in his head?
- 22:46Speaker 2: Oh it's better than that.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Oh hit me.
- 22:49Speaker 3: So at the beginning of the film, he takes the
- 22:53Speaker 3: pills from his doctor. We find out later they're Placeba.
- 22:56Speaker 3: So whatever pills he's been taking are fake. We you know,
- 23:01Speaker 3: there's conflicting stories on if he's a paranoid, schizophrenic, whatever.
- 23:05Speaker 2: The point is, there's something going on in.
- 23:07Speaker 3: This guy's head. Anyway, the beginning of the film, when
- 23:11Speaker 3: the jet engine falls from the sky into his bedroom,
- 23:16Speaker 3: he is not there because he took the pills and slept,
- 23:21Speaker 3: sleepwalked to the golf course or wherever he was right
- 23:26Speaker 3: and it like kept him from being in the room
- 23:29Speaker 3: when this jet engine came to kill him. And then
- 23:33Speaker 3: at the end of that we go through this whole thing,
- 23:35Speaker 3: and at the end of the film he ends up
- 23:37Speaker 3: back where he wasn't at the beginning, in his bedroom,
- 23:41Speaker 3: which is when he ends up essentially dying. Right, that's
- 23:44Speaker 3: the end of the story. Well, my theory is that
- 23:48Speaker 3: he actually was in his bedroom and the moment that
- 23:53Speaker 3: the jet engine breaks through his roof, and the moment
- 24:01Speaker 3: between the dread engine bringing through his roof and it
- 24:04Speaker 3: crushing him and him dying. His mind goes through this,
- 24:09Speaker 3: His consciousness goes through this story and this journey over
- 24:13Speaker 3: twenty eight days, and that's what the film is. The
- 24:18Speaker 3: film is his consciousness in between the moment between the
- 24:21Speaker 3: roof caving in and him dying, kind of playing playing
- 24:27Speaker 3: a fairy tale in his head.
- 24:31Speaker 1: You're arguing, no time travel involved whatsoever.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Nothing happened.
- 24:35Speaker 3: He actually died at the very beginning of the film,
- 24:37Speaker 3: and that was simply his consciousness creating a story to
- 24:40Speaker 3: get him through to the next part of his existence.
- 24:45Speaker 1: After This is the most outrageous take I've ever heard
- 24:47Speaker 1: on Donnie.
- 24:48Speaker 4: This is an outrageous movie. This movie, this movie's up
- 24:54Speaker 4: predicated on any any rational reason. And somehow that was
- 24:58Speaker 4: the most outrageous thing I've ever heard about this movie before.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Tell me that it's wrong, though, tell me tell me why.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I will tell you that it's wrong. I will tell you. Okay,
- 25:08Speaker 1: here's why. Here's why. I think the movie is trying
- 25:11Speaker 1: to communicate to us that that's not what happened. I
- 25:15Speaker 1: think it wants us to believe that the Pocket Universe
- 25:17Speaker 1: actually happened, right, And I think you and I talked
- 25:22Speaker 1: about so, Nick and I were talking before we got
- 25:24Speaker 1: on the call here, and I think, now it's probably
- 25:29Speaker 1: a good time to segue into the final song that
- 25:32Speaker 1: we hear, which is Mad World, and it's it's this
- 25:35Speaker 1: montage with all the characters, and I think, this, this montage,
- 25:40Speaker 1: the scene is everything you need to know about what
- 25:47Speaker 1: the writer thinks the ending of this movie is. So
- 25:50Speaker 1: the song comes on, an awesome song talking about all
- 25:54Speaker 1: the oddities and the things that don't make sense in
- 25:58Speaker 1: the world.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:59Speaker 1: And as we're listen listening to this song, everyone is
- 26:02Speaker 1: waking up from It's the night, right, it's the night
- 26:06Speaker 1: that the jet engine falls through the ceiling, and everyone's
- 26:09Speaker 1: waking up kind of simultaneously, at least that's the way
- 26:11Speaker 1: it's coming across. And they're all waking up from what
- 26:16Speaker 1: appears to be a dream, and there are people who
- 26:19Speaker 1: are reacting to the dream. Drew Barrymore looks a little
- 26:22Speaker 1: bummed out right. Patrick Swayze's character Jim Cummingham, he's he's
- 26:27Speaker 1: crying right profusely. As we've learned in the Pocket Universe
- 26:32Speaker 1: that he was a pedophile and that he was running
- 26:34Speaker 1: this child pornography sex dungeon, right, and he appears to
- 26:38Speaker 1: be waking up from like the guilt of what he's done.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And then the thing that really sells it is when
- 26:47Speaker 1: Frank wakes up, Frank touches his eye, which we know
- 26:51Speaker 1: is where Donnie shoots him, so he appears to have
- 26:53Speaker 1: some memory of what happened to him. Right. And then
- 26:58Speaker 1: finally after the dream, you know, we see Gretchen, and Gretchen,
- 27:01Speaker 1: who is alive of course, uh, and she comes to
- 27:04Speaker 1: the Darko's residence after tragedy is you know, unfolded for them.
- 27:08Speaker 1: She asks what happens she finds out and we learned
- 27:11Speaker 1: that she doesn't know the Darko's which of course she doesn't,
- 27:14Speaker 1: and there's this weird moment of connection between her and
- 27:17Speaker 1: Missus Darko in which they wave at each other. It's
- 27:21Speaker 1: almost it's not quite clear. You could definitely make this
- 27:24Speaker 1: argument that I'm wrong here on this part, but it
- 27:27Speaker 1: looks like there's this sense of familiarity with each other,
- 27:31Speaker 1: like they recognize each other even though they shouldn't. So
- 27:35Speaker 1: like that's why I think, I think that's why it
- 27:39Speaker 1: all happened. At least that's what I'm taking from the film.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and I like that explanation. My theory was a
- 27:45Speaker 3: little uh off, off the cuff.
- 27:47Speaker 1: And a little off, like this is the place for them,
- 27:51Speaker 1: But you did you.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Didn't make a point.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Right there all are if I'm making the case for
- 27:55Speaker 3: my crazy idea, they all are waking up from a
- 27:58Speaker 3: trans or some sort of dream.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Which kind of backs up my theory about.
- 28:02Speaker 3: It all happening in Donnie's head prior to him actually dying,
- 28:05Speaker 3: and they're all waking up because his consciousness was able
- 28:09Speaker 3: to kind of.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Story. I see, we're back tracking now and it's a
- 28:16Speaker 1: it's a collective consciousness. Is that I'm here? Yeah, that's
- 28:19Speaker 1: interesting and so there there there could be an argument
- 28:22Speaker 1: for that, for that theory, I could buy that more
- 28:25Speaker 1: than all this.
- 28:27Speaker 3: For the record, I think you are correct. But I
- 28:30Speaker 3: just had that thought. I was like, because he's already
- 28:33Speaker 3: they've already set up that he's now all right in
- 28:35Speaker 3: the head and so like, And they also.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Established that like you know, time it's a time travel film.
- 28:43Speaker 3: It's it's it's relative right, like the the the moment
- 28:48Speaker 3: between death, like right before death, couldn't last as much
- 28:53Speaker 3: time as you need it to.
- 28:55Speaker 1: What you know?
- 28:55Speaker 2: We don't know, So I don't know. I think it
- 28:58Speaker 2: was interesting thought.
- 28:59Speaker 1: The other thing is it definitely is because there's a
- 29:02Speaker 1: lot of people who argue whether Donnie is actually crazy in.
- 29:06Speaker 3: This movie, right, Like that's arguing itself like is he
- 29:09Speaker 3: insaney or is he like I'm just a normal teenage
- 29:11Speaker 3: boy who has like problems, Like who's just like, you know,
- 29:15Speaker 3: going through it.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. We don't that that
- 29:21Speaker 1: makes so your argument, though, makes it very I'm very
- 29:26Speaker 1: interested to see how you're going to rate this movie
- 29:29Speaker 1: for as a time travel movie. I'm very concerned now.
- 29:35Speaker 3: I mean you should be concerned regardless, because I mean,
- 29:37Speaker 3: the shit's crazy, like like the fact.
- 29:41Speaker 1: So.
- 29:41Speaker 3: But but actually the other thing I have, the other
- 29:43Speaker 3: theory I have, which this is what I'm really excited
- 29:46Speaker 3: to ask you about. So the concept of the world
- 29:49Speaker 3: is going to end? Ye, right, We're assuming that the
- 29:56Speaker 3: world means the actual world, like everyone correct, That's what
- 30:01Speaker 3: the audience has led to believe. That's what we I think,
- 30:03Speaker 3: that's what we kind of think of the whole.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Time, and we kind of see it kind of.
- 30:09Speaker 3: But part of me thinks that, like that's actually more
- 30:14Speaker 3: of like a metaphor placeholder for Donnie's.
- 30:18Speaker 1: World, right, So like, yeah, yeah, no, I totally agree
- 30:20Speaker 1: with that.
- 30:20Speaker 3: It's not the whole world, it's Donnie's world. And Donnie's
- 30:23Speaker 3: world is Donnie's family. Like that's his world all right,
- 30:26Speaker 3: his friends and his family basically, And so it's not
- 30:30Speaker 3: that the world is going to end, it's just that
- 30:32Speaker 3: his world is going to end, which is those closest
- 30:35Speaker 3: to him, a meaning, like his mom and sister on
- 30:38Speaker 3: an airplane that's going to crash if he doesn't go
- 30:41Speaker 3: through all of this, and of course, like that tragedy
- 30:44Speaker 3: would branch off and cause like much more devastation throughout
- 30:48Speaker 3: the rest of his family, you know, most likely and
- 30:52Speaker 3: for him, and he much prefers to be the one
- 30:55Speaker 3: to sacrifice himself so that everyone else can be happy.
- 31:00Speaker 3: And so that was the thing that I think stood
- 31:03Speaker 3: out the most that I was like, you know, I'm
- 31:05Speaker 3: pretty sure that the world is not the actual whole world,
- 31:09Speaker 3: it's just his little pocket.
- 31:12Speaker 1: So if I'm going on just the theatrical version, which
- 31:16Speaker 1: like I think actually the director's cut and the theatrical
- 31:18Speaker 1: version actually probably should be treated like two different films, right, Yeah,
- 31:24Speaker 1: if I'm going based on just the theatrical version, I
- 31:26Speaker 1: actually think there's a lot of validity to that, to
- 31:28Speaker 1: what you just said, especially because I think that's the
- 31:32Speaker 1: whole point of Drew Barrymore's character is she almost acts
- 31:35Speaker 1: as like, you know, the person who's breaking the fourth
- 31:38Speaker 1: wall and is foreshadowing like a lot of the things
- 31:41Speaker 1: that are going to happen in this movie. Right, the
- 31:44Speaker 1: whole Grandma death basement scene, she foreshadows all of that, right,
- 31:48Speaker 1: the kids who break in and just want to see
- 31:51Speaker 1: the world burn, the pain of puberty talk that she has,
- 31:56Speaker 1: and of course that's what Donnie's going through. And then
- 31:58Speaker 1: he has sex with Gretchen, right like that, that's all there,
- 32:02Speaker 1: And I think it's absolutely fair to say that this
- 32:06Speaker 1: movie is about, you know, the end of the world
- 32:08Speaker 1: in two different metaphorically, in two different ideas. It's the
- 32:11Speaker 1: end of Donnie's world because he's the one that's going away,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and maybe he knows that, right, I mean, I guess
- 32:18Speaker 1: he does know that. But and then metaphorically, like you know,
- 32:21Speaker 1: it's the end of the world from like the perspective
- 32:23Speaker 1: of like being a child, right, he's he's going he
- 32:27Speaker 1: I mean, this is what I'm taking from, like the
- 32:29Speaker 1: end of this movie, Donnie. Donnie's a man by the
- 32:32Speaker 1: end of this movie. He starts it as a kid,
- 32:33Speaker 1: He's a man by the end of it, right, taking
- 32:35Speaker 1: on a responsibility. He's lost his innocence, right, he does
- 32:39Speaker 1: he does the sex. So, yeah, I think there's a
- 32:45Speaker 1: huge like there's a there's a giant metaphor in the room, right,
- 32:49Speaker 1: And so I think you're absolutely on the money with
- 32:53Speaker 1: when they keep saying the end of the world, they
- 32:55Speaker 1: mean it very subjectively for Donnie. That's what I take
- 33:00Speaker 1: from the theatrical cut. The director's cut is like, nah, dude,
- 33:04Speaker 1: he really did save the world because so like in
- 33:08Speaker 1: the So for those who don't know, if you've never
- 33:10Speaker 1: seen the director's cut, the director's cut is filled with ROBERTA.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Sparrow's Philosophy of time Travel, which is the book that
- 33:17Speaker 1: Donnie is reading throughout the story, and he even tells
- 33:20Speaker 1: the therapist everything in this book is something that I
- 33:23Speaker 1: am going through. And there are a couple of times
- 33:26Speaker 1: where it tells us about like a pocket universe, right
- 33:29Speaker 1: that gets created and based on that and again, this
- 33:34Speaker 1: is another like example of like tell me instead of
- 33:37Speaker 1: show me. It tells us that, like when a pocket
- 33:41Speaker 1: universe is created, it's only going to exist for like
- 33:43Speaker 1: sat amount of time before it expires, and then everything
- 33:46Speaker 1: in it will go. But even if that is still
- 33:49Speaker 1: the case, Nick, I wonder if there's still an argument
- 33:53Speaker 1: for what you're saying there, because if this pocket universe
- 33:57Speaker 1: ends right, then everyone in it ended right, and everyone
- 34:03Speaker 1: in the original timeline should still be fine because they
- 34:05Speaker 1: were never part of it to begin.
- 34:07Speaker 3: With, right, right, and it just happened in his head.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Maybe you're right now, you're telling you, you're telling me
- 34:14Speaker 1: on this we're talking about it.
- 34:16Speaker 2: The more my crazy theory makes sense, I will say.
- 34:21Speaker 1: This if if it does happen in his head, I
- 34:25Speaker 1: think that to quote Dumbledore, I don't think it makes
- 34:27Speaker 1: it any less real because of what the ending of
- 34:29Speaker 1: the movie is trying to communicate, what.
- 34:30Speaker 3: A fantastic club bring Double Door into this amazing what
- 34:34Speaker 3: up Alphas. Of course it's happening inside your head, Harry.
- 34:43Speaker 1: It's great. It's a great line because it all still matters, right,
- 34:48Speaker 1: That's what they're trying to tell us. What that montage
- 34:50Speaker 1: it mattered.
- 34:51Speaker 3: And the universe in that moment like opens up in
- 34:54Speaker 3: some part of the pocket Universe's consciousness from each of
- 34:59Speaker 3: those characters was transferred via a dream that they had,
- 35:04Speaker 3: and that's why they all woke up with such emotion,
- 35:07Speaker 3: because from a parallel universe perspective, they had some inkling
- 35:13Speaker 3: what was going on, right, And there's course theories about
- 35:15Speaker 3: how dreams are your doorway to alternate realities, and so
- 35:19Speaker 3: it kind of works in that respect.
- 35:22Speaker 1: In that perspective. I will fight y'all on this one point.
- 35:26Speaker 1: The movie gives us dates. It gives us dates. It
- 35:32Speaker 1: starts on October second, It ends on October thirty first,
- 35:35Speaker 1: October thirtieth, ends on October thirtieth, and then it starts
- 35:40Speaker 1: again on October second. This seems to imply time travel.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Seems to imply.
- 35:48Speaker 1: But also, look, that's the best you get from this movie.
- 35:50Speaker 1: It seems to imply.
- 35:52Speaker 3: That's the thing though, right, there's not It's is this
- 35:56Speaker 3: might be the first.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Movie we reviewed.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Look look at me, I'm like, I can't even I'm
- 36:00Speaker 3: taking off my head just like what happens next, Oh
- 36:04Speaker 3: my god, smoke Fosters. And that's the thing, though, Is
- 36:13Speaker 3: that This is like the first time travel movie we've reviewed.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Where we can't agree on what happened.
- 36:19Speaker 3: We don't even know what time travel happened or didn't
- 36:23Speaker 3: happen or when.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Like, I think you have to assume it's so like
- 36:30Speaker 1: again and this is just a problem with this movie.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I think you have to assume it's time travel because
- 36:35Speaker 1: the movie calls it time travel, right, if that's even reliable?
- 36:38Speaker 3: Smoking mirror, baby, smoking mirrors.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I like the theory, I really do. I think the
- 36:45Speaker 1: biggest rea I'm fighting back for two reasons. A. I
- 36:48Speaker 1: needed to be a time travel and movie in order
- 36:50Speaker 1: for this to win and so I can win. And
- 36:54Speaker 1: B because the movie is insisting on calling it time travel.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Now I'm all about unreliable narrator.
- 37:00Speaker 2: You know what, you know what? You know what's crazy?
- 37:03Speaker 3: Hit me when you drafted this movie, I was like,
- 37:06Speaker 3: you're out of your mind that he's a superhero, right,
- 37:09Speaker 3: but I was okay with the time travel. After rewatching
- 37:11Speaker 3: it and talking to you, it's actually much more plausible
- 37:14Speaker 3: that he is a superhero, but that this is not
- 37:16Speaker 3: actually a time travel that's the exact opposite.
- 37:20Speaker 1: That is crazy. You're crazy.
- 37:23Speaker 2: This is a superhero.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Movie not a time travel movie. I'm I'm convinced, unbelievable,
- 37:30Speaker 3: no time travel in this movie.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I take it back, Nick, that is the most outrageous
- 37:38Speaker 1: take on this movie of all time.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Listen, it's all happening in a dream, the moment between
- 37:47Speaker 3: the moment that he gets beforeright before he gets crushed
- 37:49Speaker 3: by this jet engine at the very beginning. It's a
- 37:52Speaker 3: multi conscious dream that the whole town is having.
- 37:57Speaker 1: And that sounds so much more complicated than time travel.
- 38:01Speaker 3: I don't know, I mean because it makes a lot
- 38:03Speaker 3: of sense, though.
- 38:07Speaker 1: There is like a weird like psychic phenomenon with everyone
- 38:10Speaker 1: right wa waking up at the same time.
- 38:11Speaker 2: There's a psyche to it. That's why it kind of
- 38:14Speaker 2: almost works. It's like it's just the time travel is just.
- 38:17Speaker 3: So like.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I don't get it. I just don't get it.
- 38:24Speaker 3: I don't get it.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Well, like it explains like how it's going to happen,
- 38:29Speaker 1: but then we don't actually get to watch it happen.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It just happens also, we're just there.
- 38:34Speaker 3: That's the problem.
- 38:36Speaker 1: I haven't seen the director's cut in a long time.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Does is the director's cut like any different in that
- 38:42Speaker 1: scene as far as like that ending goes like it's
- 38:44Speaker 1: just him in the car, and then like it shifts
- 38:47Speaker 1: to him in the bed.
- 38:49Speaker 5: Is there any yeah, like the only thing because it
- 38:51Speaker 5: shows him in the car, and then it shows the portal,
- 38:53Speaker 5: like the circular thing portal, and then almost like it
- 38:55Speaker 5: looks like a tornado funnel right right, and then you
- 38:58Speaker 5: see the jet end like you see his.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Mom and his sister's plane like go through crazy turbulence
- 39:03Speaker 3: and start going down. And then you see a faraway
- 39:05Speaker 3: shot of what looks like the jet turbine falling through
- 39:09Speaker 3: the portal, right, and then he's in his bed and
- 39:13Speaker 3: he's got this jet engine of some emotion falling down,
- 39:16Speaker 3: which is a scene in itself.
- 39:19Speaker 1: By the way, I think this is actually one of
- 39:22Speaker 1: the weakest parts of this film is the timing of
- 39:28Speaker 1: there's this moment as as the end of the world
- 39:31Speaker 1: is happening, that these like vocal flashbacks start coming back, right,
- 39:36Speaker 1: and like you hear the physics professor talking about how
- 39:40Speaker 1: time travel is possible, right, But like the way that
- 39:43Speaker 1: the audio is lined up, it lines up to Samantha
- 39:47Speaker 1: and her mom in the plane, and it makes it
- 39:51Speaker 1: almost seem like, oh, it's the plane that's gonna do
- 39:53Speaker 1: the time travel, which like, in a sense it's the
- 39:56Speaker 1: jet engine does, right, But it also makes it seem
- 39:59Speaker 1: like the airplane gonna do it because like they specifically
- 40:01Speaker 1: he specifically says, yeah, a vehicle, probably like an aircraft.
- 40:05Speaker 1: He says that specifically when they're in the airplane, right,
- 40:10Speaker 1: it seems like they're the ones about to time travel,
- 40:12Speaker 1: which is makes it all the more confusing because that's
- 40:14Speaker 1: not what's happening. A part of the craft is. But like,
- 40:17Speaker 1: I don't it's so confusing. I love this movie for
- 40:22Speaker 1: the record, it's cos we do.
- 40:24Speaker 2: We do enjoy it like it's not.
- 40:26Speaker 3: It's just a trying to make sense of it is
- 40:29Speaker 3: so tough.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Yeah, neither head or tails. I'm like, as I'm talking
- 40:36Speaker 1: about I'm like, I have to rate this movie even
- 40:38Speaker 1: lower than I originally played, which that might be a
- 40:46Speaker 1: good segue into our ratings unless you had any other
- 40:48Speaker 1: point here.
- 40:49Speaker 3: The only thing I wanted to touch on one more time
- 40:50Speaker 3: is how fantastic the end of the movie is with
- 40:53Speaker 3: the with Mad World by Gary Jewels, at least the
- 40:58Speaker 3: Gary Jewels versions originally by Tears for Fears, but they
- 41:02Speaker 3: recorded this version specifically for this movie. So it's that. Yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 3: they recorded specifically for this movie. It fits so well and.
- 41:10Speaker 2: It's like.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Such like a heart wrenching song, but it really brings
- 41:17Speaker 3: everything kind of together and at least makes you feel
- 41:20Speaker 3: like you kind of know what happened, even though after
- 41:23Speaker 3: the movie ends you start thinking about it, you realize
- 41:25Speaker 3: you have no idea. It gives you some relief for
- 41:28Speaker 3: about three minutes. Though. That's the only other thing I
- 41:32Speaker 3: wanted to say real quick though, I think we can
- 41:34Speaker 3: we can accept the ratings.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I think I agree with you. I think it's it's
- 41:38Speaker 1: one of the highlights of the movie is that montage.
- 41:40Speaker 1: It's it's haunting, right, Yeah, great word haunting moment. Just
- 41:45Speaker 1: as a quick final note to two things I love
- 41:49Speaker 1: about this movie. I love Frank. I think Frank is
- 41:51Speaker 1: a I don't know if you can call him a character.
- 41:54Speaker 1: He's an interesting part of the plot, right, just an
- 41:58Speaker 1: interesting figment of the play. And I'm just gonna say that.
- 42:01Speaker 1: And also, I adore the Smurf conversation. I think the
- 42:05Speaker 1: Smurf conversation is so stupid and like it just sounds
- 42:09Speaker 1: like the kinds of conversations I would have. Like that
- 42:12Speaker 1: we would have like as teenagers, so dumb and ridiculous.
- 42:17Speaker 1: I love how young teenage that feels.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Actually I have a question, yeah about Frank.
- 42:26Speaker 2: If it's not all happening inside his head?
- 42:28Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, then.
- 42:29Speaker 3: How how can Frank be in two places?
- 42:32Speaker 1: Okay, So again this is where the director's cut like
- 42:35Speaker 1: really like answer some questions here, at least with the
- 42:39Speaker 1: book Philosophy time Travel. So it's not really Frank. It
- 42:43Speaker 1: it looks like Frank and like he's taking the deep
- 42:47Speaker 1: like man suit of Frank, right, but it's it's like
- 42:53Speaker 1: a character that's made from the Pocket dimension and represents
- 42:58Speaker 1: like the doom that is coming. Uh. They explore this
- 43:01Speaker 1: a bit further in the very and please never watch
- 43:04Speaker 1: this movie. Horrible sequel s Darko. It is one of
- 43:09Speaker 1: the worst sequels I have ever seen. It's told from
- 43:12Speaker 1: the perspective of Samantha and as a child who grew
- 43:16Speaker 1: up with the horrible tragedy of her brother died. Great concept, honestly,
- 43:20Speaker 1: but then she's involved in a very similar situation in
- 43:23Speaker 1: which pocket Dimension is created, but instead of her being Donnie,
- 43:27Speaker 1: she plays the Frank character, and she plays like a
- 43:31Speaker 1: messenger of doom. Throughout the rest of the movie. It's awful.
- 43:35Speaker 1: When I just describe sounded awesome, it's not. It's not awesome.
- 43:38Speaker 1: It's bad. It's boring. It doesn't make any sense. It
- 43:40Speaker 1: makes less sense than this. It's not a good time
- 43:43Speaker 1: Magill No, not Magigill at Hall. The little girl Samantha,
- 43:49Speaker 1: Oh sorry, yeah, okay, Yeah, she like grows up and
- 43:52Speaker 1: I guess like when she's like a middle teenager, she
- 43:55Speaker 1: like goes on her own darko adventures.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I didn't even know that they made a second one
- 43:59Speaker 3: that sucks that it's crazy.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Yeah, they made it in like two ten or twenty eleven,
- 44:03Speaker 1: and like I was so pumped. I was like, oh man,
- 44:05Speaker 1: this is gonna be wild and like.
- 44:07Speaker 3: No, it was wildly.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I would I actually wish it was wildly bad. You
- 44:12Speaker 1: know why I don't like that movie? Nick, What's the
- 44:14Speaker 1: one thing I can't forgive a movie for. Oh do
- 44:19Speaker 1: you remember bad bad writing?
- 44:22Speaker 3: That's true, Oh it's it's it's wait wait wait it's
- 44:26Speaker 3: it's it's.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Nope, loss it so bad writing.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I can actually forgive if it's at least like fun
- 44:36Speaker 1: to make fun of. If a movie is boring, oh,
- 44:39Speaker 1: that's the one thing I can never forgive a movie for.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I don't care if your plot doesn't make sense. If
- 44:44Speaker 1: I had a good time even making fun of your
- 44:45Speaker 1: dumb plot, I can appreciate that, you know, But if
- 44:49Speaker 1: your movie's boring, why did I watch? You know? Why
- 44:52Speaker 1: did I spend an hour and a half to two
- 44:54Speaker 1: hours of watching? And that's what s Darko is. It's boring.
- 44:59Speaker 1: But your question long winded le Nick. Yeah, he's supposed
- 45:02Speaker 1: to be like a messenger of doom projected by the
- 45:07Speaker 1: Pocket universe. I'm hearing a lot of words about it
- 45:11Speaker 1: does not explain that.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Man, I've my it's all happening inside his head prior
- 45:22Speaker 3: or death. Was like a crazy theory when I when
- 45:25Speaker 3: we first started this, but seeming less crazy to me
- 45:28Speaker 3: now at the end of this.
- 45:29Speaker 1: I agree, it's less crazy that you're calling him crazy.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I'll agree. I'm just doing what the movie tells me
- 45:36Speaker 1: to do, and I'm calling it time travel, right.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I love questioning.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Directors after they've already like tried to explain things. It's
- 45:46Speaker 3: like they're wrong about their explanations. That's not what happening.
- 45:50Speaker 1: I must un into twelve monkeys.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Oh God, that people hate me for that, but I mean.
- 45:58Speaker 1: That that's why that's why this movie is yes, because
- 46:02Speaker 1: it generates this discussion, right, yeah, all right, but yeah,
- 46:08Speaker 1: I'm right there with you on the Frank thing. It's weird.
- 46:12Speaker 1: That's why I said, he's not a character like I
- 46:14Speaker 1: just kind of enjoy the concept of Frank ratings. Okay, So,
- 46:20Speaker 1: as explained before, we break this down into three categories,
- 46:23Speaker 1: how we would judge the movie as just just a
- 46:26Speaker 1: work of art, how it works, how the time travel works,
- 46:30Speaker 1: and then of course how it works in the category Nick,
- 46:36Speaker 1: I'm usually pretty polite, I'm gonna selfishly go first year
- 46:40Speaker 1: for for how this movie works. Out of five, I
- 46:45Speaker 1: think the characters are what sell this movie. It certainly
- 46:48Speaker 1: isn't the plot. The plot makes very little sense, and
- 46:51Speaker 1: it's it's I've watched this movie so many times, which
- 46:54Speaker 1: is why I probably have a lot of convictions on it.
- 46:57Speaker 1: But overall, there's there's problems with it so many But
- 47:01Speaker 1: I enjoy the characters, I enjoy talking about it, and
- 47:03Speaker 1: I do think that those are points worth weighing in
- 47:06Speaker 1: the movie's favor as a work of art. I can't
- 47:10Speaker 1: go higher than a three, though, I really can't, so
- 47:12Speaker 1: I'm sticking with a three on it.
- 47:14Speaker 3: And this is just overall score, overall score, just from
- 47:21Speaker 3: a movie perspective, Yeah, just from a movie. Wow, I'm
- 47:24Speaker 3: surprising one with a three.
- 47:27Speaker 2: I hire too low, too low.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Mmm, I was gonna give you like a three point
- 47:32Speaker 3: five is my score?
- 47:33Speaker 2: Just overall?
- 47:33Speaker 3: Is a movie like enjoyable, a lot of fun, awesome,
- 47:39Speaker 3: really good? I mean the acting was was fantastic. J
- 47:42Speaker 3: jillenh is like crazy good.
- 47:45Speaker 2: And yeah there's a there's.
- 47:46Speaker 3: A sh ton of problems, like with the explanations, but
- 47:49Speaker 3: it keeps you, it keeps you, it keeps you in.
- 47:52Speaker 3: So yeah, three and a half.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I prefer the record. I can't go higher than a three.
- 47:57Speaker 1: But I also would watch the fuck out of a
- 47:59Speaker 1: movie that is a three for the record.
- 48:02Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I can still love a three. Okay, Now this is
- 48:08Speaker 1: where it gets interesting. Uh, Nick, I think you're the
- 48:11Speaker 1: one who's rude to go here. Uh how do you
- 48:13Speaker 1: rate this? How do you rate the time travel of
- 48:15Speaker 1: this movie?
- 48:16Speaker 3: Oh god, the time travel of this movie. We don't
- 48:24Speaker 3: have a lot of movies left either, so I don't
- 48:25Speaker 3: have to be like I don't have the I don't
- 48:27Speaker 3: have to worry about the scale getting off. This is
- 48:29Speaker 3: gonna be bad for you. One point two five.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Whoa, that was the boat. That was an interesting decimal.
- 48:40Speaker 1: One point two five. Explain yourself.
- 48:43Speaker 3: I don't have to because the movie didn't either.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Damn it walked into that one.
- 48:49Speaker 3: You did, man, you really sent me for that. Listen.
- 48:55Speaker 2: They give us.
- 48:57Speaker 3: The needs to be metal, needs to be the speed
- 49:01Speaker 3: of light, needs to be a portal. Yeah, but they
- 49:06Speaker 3: don't one of those things is not even possible.
- 49:11Speaker 2: One of the other.
- 49:12Speaker 3: And the other thing is they don't tell us, like,
- 49:14Speaker 3: we don't know how the portal got there. It's just
- 49:16Speaker 3: supposed to show up like blah blah blah, and then
- 49:20Speaker 3: we don't even see the time travel happen. We don't
- 49:23Speaker 3: see any kind of like you know, at least a terminator,
- 49:27Speaker 3: you see a portal open and you see him go
- 49:29Speaker 3: through the portal and come right.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Twelve monkeys saying like.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Same kind of concepts stem at least like go through
- 49:37Speaker 1: nothing here.
- 49:38Speaker 3: He just all of a sudden he's in his bed
- 49:39Speaker 3: and he's getting crushed by a jet engine.
- 49:41Speaker 2: At the end of it's like, oh, he time travel.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I guess.
- 49:46Speaker 3: That's so maybe one point two five is a little harsh,
- 49:49Speaker 3: But I don't.
- 49:50Speaker 2: I don't, can't change it, can't change it.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Believe it, you can, you can't.
- 50:02Speaker 3: I think it's more happening in his head than time travel. Honestly,
- 50:06Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I apologize.
- 50:08Speaker 1: That is a theory. That is a theory. So after
- 50:15Speaker 1: having this discussion, this is why I love this exercise.
- 50:19Speaker 1: After having a discussion, I think my opinion on the
- 50:23Speaker 1: concept of the time travel in this movie has changed
- 50:25Speaker 1: because it is time travel. For the record, Let the
- 50:31Speaker 1: record show the man was reading the philosophy of time travel,
- 50:34Speaker 1: not the philosophy of having a mental breakdown before you die,
- 50:38Speaker 1: which actually it was kind of the same thing based
- 50:41Speaker 1: on the book.
- 50:42Speaker 2: You Don't o bang your own rules about show me,
- 50:44Speaker 2: not tell me.
- 50:45Speaker 3: The book is telling you, but they're not showing you,
- 50:48Speaker 3: and you're believe it what.
- 50:50Speaker 1: The writer insists that this movie is about writer. But
- 50:54Speaker 1: I but I do agree that movies are in art
- 51:00Speaker 1: of a visual art, right. So if that is the case,
- 51:04Speaker 1: if there is going to be time travel, show me
- 51:06Speaker 1: the time travel, right. So for that and for not
- 51:10Speaker 1: properly explaining how Donnie moves at the speed of light,
- 51:13Speaker 1: I think I'm correct about what my theory is, which
- 51:15Speaker 1: is why I said it. But you didn't show me
- 51:19Speaker 1: any of that, and you certainly didn't tell me that,
- 51:22Speaker 1: so it's pretty weak here. I'm gonna give it a one.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Oh man, I was nice to you, and I.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Believe it's time travel.
- 51:36Speaker 3: That's crazy. That's such a I feel like your score
- 51:38Speaker 3: should be higher just for me believing it's time travel.
- 51:40Speaker 2: But I guess not.
- 51:41Speaker 1: I as as I talk it out, I think I
- 51:46Speaker 1: think on paper, what they explain is good, right, it's
- 51:49Speaker 1: very simple. But what they've shown that what they actually
- 51:52Speaker 1: do different different and doesn't like And there's a lot
- 51:58Speaker 1: before the montage that is very confusing. Like for years,
- 52:01Speaker 1: I thought the airplane was the thing that was traveling
- 52:04Speaker 1: through time for years, and as I watched it for
- 52:06Speaker 1: as an adult, it was like, no, it that doesn't
- 52:08Speaker 1: make any sense. It's not the airplane. It can't be
- 52:09Speaker 1: the airplane. It's just part of the airplane is going
- 52:12Speaker 1: through and then so is Donnie. But like we never
- 52:14Speaker 1: see that. So, yeah, this is the weirdest movie to rate,
- 52:18Speaker 1: Like now that I'm watching it, it's the weirdest movie
- 52:20Speaker 1: to rate. The time travel for it's it's time travel.
- 52:24Speaker 1: But we don't see the time travel. We just see
- 52:26Speaker 1: the end result, right, I'm sticking with it. I I
- 52:32Speaker 1: think of the movies that we have seen so far,
- 52:35Speaker 1: I think that this has been the weirdest concept, not
- 52:38Speaker 1: the weirdest concept. Actually, the concept's great, the weirdest visual
- 52:41Speaker 1: of time travel that I've seen, because it's it's not existing.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's definitely the toughest one to unpack
- 52:47Speaker 3: for sure so far. Superhero How old does it fit
- 52:54Speaker 3: into the category of superheroes?
- 52:56Speaker 1: Oh? Baby, this is a five? Are you kidding me?
- 53:00Speaker 2: Five? Are you delusional? Have you been drinking?
- 53:04Speaker 1: God? How can you even argue that it's not a
- 53:08Speaker 1: superhero movie? He has superpowers, he has the superhero name.
- 53:12Speaker 1: He saved the world, like he saves the girl. Like,
- 53:16Speaker 1: what else do you need?
- 53:21Speaker 2: Are you really giving it a five?
- 53:23Speaker 1: I'm really giving it a five.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Joe's jo Joe's found bad in this time. Tell draft everyone,
- 53:29Speaker 3: just so you know, he's gotta he's gotta just like
- 53:31Speaker 3: grasp over here, just pull it out of his you know. Five. Okay,
- 53:39Speaker 3: I'm generously. I'm gonna give you a four for superhero category.
- 53:45Speaker 2: That's a nice score. You actually changed my mind.
- 53:48Speaker 3: The movie changed my mind about him actually maybe having superpowers,
- 53:51Speaker 3: and you know, his name being Donnie Darko does help
- 53:55Speaker 3: with believing it. He's definitely got superpower square.
- 54:00Speaker 2: You don't know how many superpowers he has. He's got some.
- 54:05Speaker 3: The problem, though, is the superpowers he has are in
- 54:09Speaker 3: that pocket of the movie that happens in the Pocket universe,
- 54:13Speaker 3: which might be happening in his head, which then means
- 54:16Speaker 3: he really doesn't actually have superpowers. So I'm not one
- 54:19Speaker 3: hundred percent sure he is a superhero. But his name
- 54:22Speaker 3: is Donny Dharko no matter what part of the movie
- 54:26Speaker 3: we're in, So does your scores already locked in?
- 54:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna go ahead and say this by one thing
- 54:33Speaker 1: about his superpowers, and he definitely does have them. The
- 54:36Speaker 1: movie is so wildly inconsistent about when he has superpowers,
- 54:42Speaker 1: because like, there are two times when the bully is
- 54:44Speaker 1: on him. At least the first time you could make
- 54:46Speaker 1: maybe make the argument that, like, oh, he just doesn't
- 54:49Speaker 1: want to fight the bully, but the second time he
- 54:51Speaker 1: definitely does because he wants to save Gretchen. So why
- 54:53Speaker 1: isn't he using his super strength that he definitely had
- 54:56Speaker 1: earlier in the film? Just doesn't. I mean, the only
- 55:00Speaker 1: argument I can think of there, and this is a stretch,
- 55:03Speaker 1: is because the Pocket universe, because he talks about destiny
- 55:08Speaker 1: earlier in the movie, right, and like he knows that
- 55:09Speaker 1: Gretchen is destined to die. He saw it in her
- 55:12Speaker 1: weird liquid tube thing, right, he knows she's gonna die,
- 55:17Speaker 1: And I forget not he's not allowed to stop it.
- 55:21Speaker 1: He's not supposed to stop it, so therefore he can't
- 55:23Speaker 1: stop it. That's the only explanation I can come up
- 55:25Speaker 1: for that. But again, the movie is insisting on you
- 55:31Speaker 1: making those grasps instead of giving you any sort of explanation.
- 55:34Speaker 1: They're no rules as far as his superpowers are concerned. Anyway,
- 55:42Speaker 1: that's all the time we got.
- 55:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I forgot about the stupid, the stupid things coming
- 55:47Speaker 3: out of their bodies. We're not talking about those. That
- 55:54Speaker 3: was a choice at my Friends time Travel apt episode.
- 56:00Speaker 3: That was insane.
- 56:03Speaker 1: A way to end that will do it for us today. However,
- 56:10Speaker 1: next time we will be covering the finale of Agatha
- 56:14Speaker 1: All Along, which also just had its very own time
- 56:17Speaker 1: travel episode. Yes, and I am so excited to talk
- 56:20Speaker 1: to you about that, Nick. Yes, I forgot to mention
- 56:23Speaker 1: that this is coming out during Halloween week, which was
- 56:25Speaker 1: another bonus point for Donnie Darko being reviewed because it
- 56:28Speaker 1: is a Halloween e movie. Yes, and we will be
- 56:33Speaker 1: finishing Halloween with Agatha all Along next week, so double
- 56:36Speaker 1: the halloweenness. Love that. If you are interested in getting
- 56:41Speaker 1: our feedback, our review on Agatha Along before the episode
