- 7:14reaching competitions to ensure her place in the GB team.
- 7:17Butcher, now more than 30 athletes, took part in a
- 7:21successful Special Olympics Butcher competition in
- 7:24Peterborough. The event was the first in house
- 7:27tournament staged by the Peterborough Special Olympics
- 7:29Butcher Group at the Peterborough Indoors Bowls
- 7:32Centre. Watcher is played by throwing a
- 7:35red or blue leather balls as close as possible to a white

- 7:42individually pairs or in teams of three.
- 7:44The events featured 3 leagues in a round Robin format, teams
- 7:48battling for places in the semi finals and the chance to compete
- 7:51for trophies and medals. Organise organizers hailed the
- 7:54competition as a big success and a great showcase for inclusive
- 7:58sport in the city. And these are your sporting
- 8:01headlines this evening on PCR Sports.
- 8:04Thank you, Caroline. Stacks of things happening in
- 8:06our city as always in on all levels, grassroots all the way
- 8:10up to professional level Posh. I know you're an avid Posh fan
- 8:13and I am indeed. We've not spoken for a while on
- 8:16Posh to be honest. So obviously the season started
- 8:20off fairly miserably, but there's been some great recovery
- 8:23and Luke Williams is is turning things round, generally isn't.
- 8:26He yeah, he's he's a very good manager and he speaks a lot of
- 8:29sense. He's quite logical I think in
- 8:31his thinking. The team seem to have gelled and
- 8:34they seem to want to play for him, which I think makes a huge
- 8:37difference in football. And they've all seemed to have
- 8:41come together. We've lucked out quite a lot of
- 8:43injuries over the last couple of weeks.
- 8:46Hopefully you know, the the teams are starting to sort of
- 8:49like come back, but some of the players they've they've stepped
- 8:51up and it'll be hard I think for the injured players to come back
- 8:54in to the starting line up. It won't be easy.
- 8:57But yeah, Leyton Orient tomorrow will be tough and then obviously
- 9:00home to Rotherham on Tuesday and then away at Wimbledon and they
- 9:04won quite nicely in the week Wimbledon.
- 9:06So that'll be a tough game next Saturday.
- 9:09Still a chance of playoffs, maybe.
- 9:11I think they've just missed it, to be honest.
- 9:13I don't actually think they're probably quite strong enough
- 9:15this season either. I think Luke Williams has got
- 9:19great guidance and I really hope that he sort of stays with with
- 9:22Peterborough and nobody comes along and pinches him, which
- 9:25obviously, you know, is is classic isn't it for Posh,
- 9:27unfortunately, when players or managers do do well.
- 9:31But I think he's there for long term.
- 9:33And yeah, we'll we'll see what the next sort of like few weeks
- 9:36bring. But I think they've just
- 9:37unfortunately missed, missed out on playoff places, but they
- 9:40won't get relegated, which obviously.
- 9:42Which is a great recovery from. Weather, yeah, I mean, obviously
- 9:44in October we're bottom of the league so you've got to take it.
- 9:47It's been nothing but positive. The crowds are slowly increasing
- 9:50again, fantastic away support. I mean I go to most away games
- 9:54as well and the support there doesn't seem to be whining which
- 9:57is which is good. Brilliant.
- 9:59Good stuff. Well wish Posh good for the rest
- 10:01of the season. Thanks, Caroline.
- 10:03Right, let's just take our first break here and afterwards we'll
- 10:06be speaking to Ian and Shannon Parker, who are from the Martial
- 10:09Arts Fitness Academy, MPSK Martial Arts Fitness Academy,
- 10:12talking about the club there and what they do and the great work
- 10:15they do for the community. And Marie Ames, one of their
- 10:17students is also with us in the studio and she'll be speaking
- 10:20from her perspective for the experience and what she achieves
- 10:24at the club. So stay tuned PCR.
- 10:27You're listening to PCR. Sports.
- 10:39Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show.
- 10:41Myself, Dipam and Caroline this evening and our guests tonight
- 10:44are from MPSK, which is a martial arts fitness Academy in
- 10:48the heart of Peterborough based in Breton.
- 10:50And they've come to talk about their club and what they do and
- 10:53the great stuff they do for the community.
- 10:56So I'm joined this evening by father and daughter team Ian
- 10:58Parker and Shannon Parker and one of their students, Marie
- 11:01Ames. Good evening to you all.
- 11:04Thank you for joining us this evening.
- 11:06And Shannon, if I can come to you first, I mean, I've read a
- 11:11bit about what you do at the club.
- 11:13It sounds very impressive. You know, tell us a bit more
- 11:16about the club, you know, how long it's been around and and
- 11:18the services you offer and what you do.
- 11:20OK, so we are based in Breton, opposite the ice rink in
- 11:24Peterborough. We've had the current location
- 11:28for around 12 years now. So that's our full time centre
- 11:31that we operate from now. But in all, I think my dad's
- 11:35been teaching in the area for 37 years.
- 11:38Yeah, about that, yeah. And I've been teaching 16 years,
- 11:43training since I was like 2, so a long time.
- 11:49Yeah. And we just offer a mix of.
- 11:51So our traditional style is Tangsudo, but we've sort of
- 11:55moved with the Times Now and you know, based more now on like the
- 11:59reality side of our street self defence.
- 12:03We do ladies only kickboxing, children's classes, fitness
- 12:06classes, we do weapons training and yeah, all ages.
- 12:12And then we have our sense sessions that we do.
- 12:14And we've just started our Let It Up a Let it Out program,
- 12:18which is base flight teens that are on reduced school timetables
- 12:22out of education. Yeah, sounds really good.
- 12:26We'll go into detail about each of those aspects throughout the
- 12:28show. You mentioned about reality
- 12:32star. What does that actually mean
- 12:33there? The reality, it's more like for
- 12:35the street defence outside, you know a lot when you're attacked.
- 12:38I mean the art side of it is completely different to the
- 12:42reality side. The reality side is nasty, dirty
- 12:45and you know where the art side is beautiful to watch with fancy
- 12:49kicks and stuff like that. But I I believe that now you
- 12:54need to know that reality stuff, you know, to get by.
- 12:57Just basics, kind of. If you are getting into any
- 12:59trouble anyway, you can defend yourself, can't you?
- 13:01Yes, yeah, of course. Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:04Shannon, you mentioned that it's open to adults as as well as
- 13:06children and and no age restrictions within reason and
- 13:10obviously long as you can walk, I suppose we.
- 13:12We take, we take on from 3/4 and then I think our oldest student
- 13:17we've trained was 75. Yeah, 70.
- 13:20So yeah, there's no there's no limit and there's no right or
- 13:23wrong. Age 70, he did.
- 13:25Yeah. Did he really?
- 13:26Yeah, he did. Yeah, I'll tell you age.
- 13:27No limit then, is it? No.
- 13:29Fantastic. And on a personal level for both
- 13:31of you, if I, if I, if I can't stay with you for a moment,
- 13:33Shannon. And you've had a great deal of
- 13:35success internationally, haven't you?
- 13:37With. With the sport.
- 13:38Yeah. Oh, art.
- 13:39Good art. It's called art, isn't it?
- 13:40Rather sport. Yeah, a bit of both, yeah.
- 13:43Tell us more about that. Well, like I say, I've been
- 13:45doing it a long time and I've been competing since the age of
- 13:49about four. So it's sort of always just been
- 13:51with me. And then I've gone on to compete
- 13:55sort of all over the world, won world titles, British titles,
- 13:58European titles, and still going now you.
- 14:02Still compete now. Yeah, still competing.
- 14:04I keep saying oh it's going to be my last one but.
- 14:07I can't give it up. Can.
- 14:08You no, I haven't got that to that point yet where I'm like,
- 14:10right, I'm done. But yeah, and.
- 14:12What about yourself in what's your personal journey been like
- 14:14in the sport? I know as Shannon mentioned
- 14:16earlier, you've been teaching coaching for 3637 years, but
- 14:20obviously it started for you well before that.
- 14:21Yeah, I started when I was 7. I'm 63 now, so long time.
- 14:26Yeah, I've, I've trained a lot of places with some top
- 14:30instructors. You know, my, some of my masters
- 14:33are the like the best there is. My personal journey is I just
- 14:39love what I do. And if I can help somebody,
- 14:42that's what it's about, isn't it?
- 14:44It's giving, giving back, you know?
- 14:47Yeah, it's not all take, it's giving back.
- 14:49No. And we've had other martial arts
- 14:51clubs or individuals on as guests before.
- 14:54And as I say, say a similar thing that I think there seems
- 14:57to be like an ethos or or about on martial arts where you learn
- 15:00it and then it's all about passing that knowledge on and
- 15:03continuing that. Of course.
- 15:04Yeah. And not just keeping it yourself
- 15:06and and putting it to good use so that you help other people.
- 15:08Yeah, sometimes it can be a little bit tricky, you know,
- 15:12because some people don't want to share their knowledge.
- 15:14They want to keep it just for their sort of school.
- 15:18Like we've got a sister club in Hampshire called The Husk now
- 15:22they're traditional Shutter can, but they're our sister club.
- 15:25They've come under my umbrella so we work together.
- 15:28This is different styles mixing, which I think is brilliant.
- 15:32It's just the way forward. And then during your kind of in
- 15:35personal career, did you compete as well like?
- 15:37I did, yeah. Yeah, I've won a few world
- 15:39titles and British titles. And that.
- 15:41But you know, it's just what you do and it, when you're young and
- 15:45you know when you get older, you've got to sort of relax now.
- 15:48I leave it to Shannon now and the team.
- 15:51You guys sound so modest. You're like, we're in the
- 15:53presence of, like, martial art royalty here, and you're just
- 15:56like, oh, yeah, we just want a few world and European titles,
- 15:59people. Yeah, well, I know I can see
- 16:00that, Absolutely. But the fact that you're humble
- 16:02about your achievements is incredible.
- 16:04We don't often get world champions in this studio, I'll
- 16:06tell you. We just love what we do and pass
- 16:09on knowledge that is. Yeah, to me, that's a gift.
- 16:12Yeah, yeah, I definitely think it's more rewarding for me
- 16:16seeing like our students hit their goals and their
- 16:20achievements then me going, winning a title like that means
- 16:22more to me than me personally winning a title.
- 16:26That's incredible. And that that kind of really
- 16:28sets a great tone at the actual Academy itself and how you wish
- 16:32to run it and and the values you put you promote there as well.
- 16:35Yeah, I mean, we're very lucky because anyone that we sort of
- 16:38have joiners, they will say like it's not like a club.
- 16:42We we are like one big family, you know, everyone is there for
- 16:45each other. And yeah, it's just not like a
- 16:48an average club that you might walk into and everyone sort of
- 16:50just doing their own thing like, you know.
- 16:53Which I have seen when I've been about.
- 16:55Yeah. And my journeys, you know, they
- 16:57keep you sort of at arm's length.
- 16:59They don't want to bring you in. It takes a long while.
- 17:02Where as soon as you walk into our place, you're welcome.
- 17:04Yeah, arm around the shoulder and come in and join us.
- 17:06Type. Thing.
- 17:06Enjoy and enjoy what we do. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:09And that's how it should be, I think with any club, with any
- 17:11sport, to be honest, because you, if you want to get the best
- 17:13out of people, then that's what it should be to make you feel
- 17:15welcome and feel at home. Yeah.
- 17:17So on that note, Marie, if I can come to you next, You're, you
- 17:21are a, a member of the Academy from a, from a sort of record it
- 17:24from a customer perspective. You like, you're one of the
- 17:27students and, and you've got children who are students there
- 17:29as well. And Yep, have you find it, You
- 17:32know, how long have you been associated with the Academy?
- 17:34So my son's 15 and I think he started when he was about 6 or
- 17:397. And then my daughter, my
- 17:42youngest daughter started when she was 3, 3-4.
- 17:47And then I started probably about 4-5 years ago.
- 17:52Yeah. It was kind of like my son dared
- 17:54me. He said I really wouldn't dare
- 17:55do that. And then I was like, yeah, I
- 17:58would. Yeah, I would.
- 17:59Wow. That's.
- 17:59Kind of cool. Called his bluff.
- 18:00Yeah, going from there. And have what's your experience
- 18:03been like for the last few years?
- 18:05I love it, Absolutely love it. Yeah.
- 18:08What do you love about it? Everything.
- 18:10So like Shannon said, we are just one big family.
- 18:13I do the ladies classes and the circuits and I mean the ladies
- 18:17classes are brilliant. I mean, we just all shower like
- 18:21encouraging each other and one of the ladies gives us stickers
- 18:24at the end. So yeah.
- 18:26No, it is. It is brilliant.
- 18:28And what, what classes do you get?
- 18:30What sort of which art do you sort of participate in?
- 18:33Because obviously Shannon, you mentioned yeah, yeah.
- 18:35And what about in terms of the martial arts?
- 18:37My daughter does the Tang pseudo side of it, my youngest
- 18:41daughter, my eldest is does the ladies kickboxing and then my
- 18:45son does Shannon's letter out programme.
- 18:48Fantastic. So you've got kind of your
- 18:51family has experience of multiple aspects of of what they
- 18:54offer for the Academy. Son did originally start by
- 18:57doing the Tang pseudo that as he's got older he's had to come
- 19:01away from that and no, that's why he's doing the letter out
- 19:03programme. And in, in terms of what it's
- 19:05done for you and your family, then not just from a technical
- 19:08perspective, obviously you'd learn the arts technically, but
- 19:11yeah. But has there been other aspects
- 19:12that that of kind of disciplines or other things that have
- 19:15improved your life generally well?
- 19:17It's definitely improved my fitness, but it's, it's like
- 19:24it's that woman. It's it's brilliant.
- 19:25It's you know, these guys are amazing.
- 19:27They're there for you, not more. Like, I don't know, I can't
- 19:31explain it. They just read for you there in
- 19:34a in every sort of way. Yeah, in a so like in an
- 19:36emotional way as well. You know, my son, bless him, he
- 19:39hasn't had the easiest ride. These guys have been amazing,
- 19:43absolutely amazing. So kind of it sounds like like,
- 19:45like like Ian said that it's a family sort of feel there and it
- 19:49gives people a good sense of belonging and, and, and so feel
- 19:52like they're part of something and just a community feel there.
- 19:55Yeah, definitely. We are just one big family,
- 19:57aren't we? We are.
- 19:59Amazing stuff, right? Let's just take a short break
- 20:01then. We're back talking a bit more
- 20:03about MPSK as a martial art Academy and finding a bit more
- 20:07about, again, talking deeper about the services they offer
- 20:10and and what takes place in the club.
- 20:12Stay tuned, it's PCRM. You're listening to PCR.
- 20:25Sports. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 20:33Show with myself, Dipam and Caroline this week you can
- 20:37listen to us in in many ways. So if you do, if you are out and
- 20:40about and you're not actually at home, you can listen through an
- 20:44app or just download it. Download it on your own on your
- 20:46phone PCRFM app or go to our website pcrfm.co.uk.
- 20:50Or at home you can listen in on a normal Radio One O 3.2 or a
- 20:54DAB device and tune into that or ask a smart speaker to play
- 20:58PCRFM. So anywhere in the world, you
- 21:00can now listen to us and never miss a moment.
- 21:03So no excuses for missing any of our show, especially the sports
- 21:06show on a Friday night, 6 till 7, right?
- 21:10We're in the company of Ian Parker and Shannon Parker from
- 21:13the MPSK Martial Arts Fitness Academy, along with Marie Ames,
- 21:17who's one of their students. Ian, Shannon, if I come back to
- 21:21you, just want to touch on something you mentioned earlier,
- 21:24Shannon, around the offerings that you have at the club, you
- 21:28mentioned about do for send children and and make it sort of
- 21:31inclusive for for for all comers.
- 21:34Tell us a bit more about that initiative and, and, and the
- 21:36sort of the idea and the concept behind that and why you decided
- 21:39to offer that service. So we was.
- 21:41Already doing like a sensory circuit you was running that
- 21:45wasn't you. But then lockdown happened and
- 21:48you know, we we couldn't run the normal classes.
- 21:50We could. And then it was like trying to
- 21:52build it in again. But it was something we was
- 21:54really passionate about. So we made a decision, didn't
- 21:56we, a few months ago that it's something we really want to
- 21:58start up again. So we do a children's up to 11
- 22:02on a Monday, and then we have like 11 up on a Friday.
- 22:07And it's just a bit of a space where they can come just, you
- 22:10know, like the little ones, they'll just run ragged for 10
- 22:12minutes. And then we just do like some
- 22:14basic little pad work, just basic little things to sort of
- 22:17keep them engaged. And yeah, they have a great
- 22:20time, don't they? They do, yeah.
- 22:21And do you like to see them little kids faces?
- 22:24It's worth £1,000,000 to me. Do you know what I mean?
- 22:26When you see them walk out and they're smiling and happy, I
- 22:29wanna come back next week and it's lovely and.
- 22:33In particular, you know, I guess they must face challenges in
- 22:36life in whatever capacity, of course, and this gives them
- 22:38something that again like going back to the earlier sort of
- 22:41conversation, a belonging, a place that they feel comfortable
- 22:43and and welcomed and, and I love to really place for.
- 22:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, which is absolutely fantastic.
- 22:49Yeah, my. One of my friend's sons has got
- 22:52special needs but unfortunately he's he's a teen gone past a
- 22:56teenager, he's like 2324 and she's finding it very difficult
- 23:00to find somewhere for him to go or to do something.
- 23:04My son works for Youth streams project and they do a lot of CPE
- 23:08in schools and holiday clubs and obviously it's only up to sort
- 23:10of a certain age. I think it's like year 8.
- 23:13And then obviously, you know, my friend's done things with her
- 23:16son up to about 18, but he's hit 18 and there's just nowhere
- 23:19really for her to take him. And it would be interesting to
- 23:22know what is out there for, for adults like that.
- 23:25So we do have. As I say, like the Friday
- 23:28session, so that includes sort of adults as well.
- 23:31Yeah, but we're. More than.
- 23:32Happy for anyone to come and try just out who you are our.
- 23:36Sessions in the. Evenings or on that with like
- 23:39our Let it Out programme, it is based more on children that are
- 23:43out have education. But I'm finding I'm getting a
- 23:47lot more people interested with your sort of situation.
- 23:52So they want to take like the one to one training option.
- 23:54OK. And.
- 23:56Yeah, that's just gone crazy busy.
- 23:58So we we have quite a lot of options.
- 24:00There's just doesn't seem to. Be a lot out there.
- 24:02Yeah, I know. That's.
- 24:03Sort of. It's a gap, isn't it, between
- 24:05like it's a fine line of, of obviously teachers, they're not
- 24:10in schools anymore, so nobody can teach them, can they?
- 24:12But and then obviously like clubs come along, but they
- 24:14probably feel a bit that they can't participate because they
- 24:18can't do some things that other children or other adults can do.
- 24:21And I think it's probably quite a lonely sort of time for them.
- 24:24But it's nice to know that people can come to your club and
- 24:26be welcomed and and received and can just get on with it because
- 24:31as a minor. If somebody is is receiving
- 24:33special educational needs and, and, and being met that way, but
- 24:36once they like, they leave school and they're an adult put
- 24:39out into the world and you kind of lose that support, don't you?
- 24:42Of course, but there's nothing. In the adult world because he
- 24:44can't really find a job or do anything like that.
- 24:47So but he can't just stay at home no all the time either.
- 24:50So it'd be nice to know if there are things out there for for
- 24:53other people like anybody. It sounds like if.
- 24:55You're a speaking friend and MPSK could be a good place to
- 24:58start for them. So that's that's brilliant.
- 25:01You touched on there about the Let it Out programme, again,
- 25:03another sort of initiative that you offer, which again is is I
- 25:08think a niche in the market. And I'm not saying it from a
- 25:10commercial perspective. But again, like we talked about,
- 25:12there's gaps there because you know, I know people who
- 25:14homeschool kids and they have a certain routine and how they do
- 25:17things. But you know, there's there's
- 25:19another dynamic here now then isn't it for what you offer?
- 25:21Yeah, so. It's been sort of in talks for a
- 25:26couple of years. I've been doing the one to ones
- 25:29with Marie's son. And then from there, me and
- 25:31Marie, Marie would always say to each other, we should you should
- 25:34really start this. And I'm like, yeah, but
- 25:36obviously life happens. And then one day I just said,
- 25:39you know what, we're just going to do it and see how it goes.
- 25:41And it's been running for a month now and near enough every
- 25:44day I'm booked in with one to ones, we do group sessions.
- 25:48And I'm finding it's not just children who are home schooled,
- 25:52it's children that are on reduced timetables.
- 25:56It's children who might have been sort of kicked out of
- 25:59mainstream school for behaviour. And then now it's gone on to
- 26:02more where I'm being contacted by like the council and other
- 26:06local authorities to help with their youths.
- 26:09And yeah, it's just gone crazy. But they all come and they love
- 26:14it. And you know, I've had parents
- 26:15cry. I had a teen the other week and
- 26:18his mum walked in and she was like he won't speak.
- 26:21He's not spoke in like 3 years. Wow, not a single word.
- 26:24Only to his. Parents and his sister and by
- 26:28the end of the class he was chatting away.
- 26:29He was asking me questions. She sat in the corner and she
- 26:32was sobbing. But straight away I rang you all
- 26:34didn't ask, crying and I'm like, this is what me like, this is
- 26:38what it is about and that's what like you said.
- 26:40Ian, just to see that thing happen, you know, either like I
- 26:43walk out, walk out of the place with smiles on the faces or, or
- 26:46the example that Shannon just gave there.
- 26:49That's priceless, isn't it? It is, yeah.
- 26:51And this is. What I say, I could teach
- 26:52anybody anything. If you've got the mindset, I'll
- 26:55help you and we, we will do it together.
- 26:58You know, this is this is my goal to, to help these kids that
- 27:02are left out. You know what I mean?
- 27:04We'll take them, don't we? And it's just amazing just to
- 27:07see somebody's life change, you know, just because you're giving
- 27:11them a bit of time. There's not enough people.
- 27:13Like you, probably I don't. Think there's enough options for
- 27:16them either it is you know, I'm not knocking the way that you
- 27:21know the the world runs, but I think it's kind of if you're not
- 27:24on that route, there's not many more options for you.
- 27:28I think you've. Kind of.
- 27:29I was just thinking along the same lines there that the world
- 27:31works in systems and if you don't conform or fit into a
- 27:34system, then you're kind of discarded or you've forgotten
- 27:37about. And it's brilliant that you're,
- 27:40you're finding people who need that.
- 27:45I won't say extra help or support, but certainly perhaps
- 27:47don't preach, don't want to be part of the system or can't be
- 27:49part of the system. And therefore you're, you're
- 27:51supporting them in a different way.
- 27:53But it sounds fun, yeah? Absolutely.
- 27:54Like, you know, and every, everybody needs a bit of fun,
- 27:57don't they? Everybody needs something to
- 27:59look forward to. So that is a.
- 28:01It's like. Yesterday I had.
- 28:02A new student in and he got upset and he started to cry.
- 28:06And he said, I don't think this is for me.
- 28:08And I goes, listen, you keep saying to me it's impossible.
- 28:12I've got to say. And I always go, listen, it's
- 28:14not impossible. It's I'm possible.
- 28:17Yeah, you put an apostrophe. There becomes a different word I
- 28:19said so just. Think that I said carry on and
- 28:22you know, by the end of it he'd come out and he went I want to
- 28:25come back to his mum because I want to come back next week.
- 28:28That's priceless, isn't it? And just staying with you
- 28:33though, and then Shannon touched on earlier about children or
- 28:37people that perhaps have behavioural challenges or
- 28:40issues. You know, we've spoken to boxing
- 28:42clubs in the past and it must be similar to what you're what you
- 28:44do there is that it kind of harnesses some of that behaviour
- 28:47and and turns into a positive, doesn't it?
- 28:49Yes, it does, yeah. And.
- 28:50It changes people. 'S lives that way, in the right
- 28:52way. Yeah, yeah, definitely 100.
- 28:55Percent. My son comes out of those.
- 28:56Sessions. Oh, my son comes out of those
- 28:59sessions and he's calm and he absolutely loves it.
- 29:01He loves going and it's it's something.
- 29:04That it gives them something to look forward to every week or
- 29:06every, every whatever days they attend.
- 29:08It just gives something to look forward to and and again, be
- 29:10part of something. Yeah, definitely.
- 29:11No, it's it's dinner does him the world of good in.
- 29:15Terms of other clubs that you might have, you know, been with
- 29:18not Percy but for your children for example, how does MPSK
- 29:21differ? Have your club, have your
- 29:22children try to try to sort of associate with other clubs,
- 29:25other sports, other activities. My son did.
- 29:29Start when he was younger at another club but it didn't work
- 29:32out and he was being bullied at school.
- 29:36So Ian spoke to my husband and said I'll bring him along, you
- 29:40know, we'll we'll help him. And then we've been there ever
- 29:43since. And what would you?
- 29:45What would you say to, if there's parents out there or or
- 29:47children that might be listening and they're kind of ringing
- 29:50about martial arts and not sure about it, what, what advice
- 29:52would you give them? Try it and.
- 29:54Try it at MPSK, that's quite straightforward.
- 29:57And direct advice and then why, why would you say we obviously
- 30:00know MPSK is a wonderful Academy, but in terms of try,
- 30:04why would you say that because I never.
- 30:07Thought I would and now I've got my level 1 fitness so if I can
- 30:11do it, anyone can do it. Sound advice.
- 30:13So if you're if you're teetering on the edge, then just give it a
- 30:16go. Shannon, if I come back to you,
- 30:19if there are again, if there are people out there that are
- 30:21potentially interested, how do they get in touch touch with the
- 30:24so with? Academy Find us on Google
- 30:27numbers, emails, everything's on there.
- 30:30We're also on Facebook and Instagram.
- 30:32MPSK martial arts We're also on Tiktok.
- 30:36MPSK Martial arts Fantastic. So you've got lots of options
- 30:39that you can reach us and then on our website as well.
- 30:42We do have a contact form which comes straight through an
- 30:44e-mail. So excellent and in terms.
- 30:46Of that initial engagement and onboarding, what can people
- 30:49expect once at the first moments they engage with the Academy?
- 30:53What sort of onboarding, any initial trainings, what sort of
- 30:56things do you do? So we basically.
- 30:58When people come down, we'll ask them sort of what is it they
- 31:01want to do because obviously we offer a lot of different classes
- 31:06and we find individuals might like set, set classes, they
- 31:11might not want to do all of them.
- 31:13So we give two weeks free just to come try tasters, get a feel
- 31:18of the different classes. And then after there we just
- 31:21have a bit of a chat and find out what it was they sort of
- 31:24liked, what they didn't so much like.
- 31:25And then we just sort of base it from that.
- 31:27Excellent. And in terms.
- 31:28Of equipment or clothing or anything like what what?
- 31:31Just comfy clothes. And a drink.
- 31:34Joggers. T-shirt and trainers type thing.
- 31:36We've got gloves. We've got everything else that
- 31:38they need to to stop. Brilliant.
- 31:41Do you have to do fundraising? Or like, do you have like
- 31:45provisions so that you can cater for all these things?
- 31:47Do you buy your own equipment or just obviously you so.
- 31:51We do a lot, but we have a sponsor who's Brian Thompson
- 31:54Windows, and he's been, he's been amazing, you know, Kitted.
- 31:59Our Dojo out with equipment and he's Ashley and and Rebecca
- 32:04they're they're brilliant people you know you don't often meet
- 32:07people like they like them They they just give do you know what
- 32:11I mean because they they know that it's going to a good cause
- 32:14yeah. So yeah, we've been really.
- 32:16Lucky with that. Fantastic.
- 32:17Good stuff. Right, let's take our final
- 32:18break and we're back again with Ian, Shannon and Marie and
- 32:23myself and Caroline in a few minutes.
- 32:24Stay tuned. It's PCR FM.
- 32:27You're. Listening to.
- 32:28PCR Sports. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 32:41Show with myself, Dipam and Caroline.
- 32:43This week we're in the accompaniment of Shannon and Ian
- 32:46Parker from the MPSK Martial Arts Fitness Academy and one of
- 32:50their students, Marie Ames. If you've missed the show so
- 32:52far, it's an absolute belter so you can listen back.
- 32:55Fear not, after 7:00 on our website pcrfm.co.uk, the show
- 33:00will be up there for a week until the next show so you can
- 33:03have a chance to listen back to it because it's been a superb
- 33:06show so far. Coming back to yourself, Ian and
- 33:11Shannon for a moment. So you mentioned about the
- 33:14classes that you offer. We talked about offerings for
- 33:17for seven children and young adults, the Let It Out
- 33:21programme, which is for children on either home schooling or
- 33:24reduced hours at school. But obviously you cater for all
- 33:27ages. We talked about ladies
- 33:29kickboxing earlier, but there's a variety of things that you do
- 33:32there isn't there in terms of individual classes.
- 33:35Tell let's go into a little bit more detail about tell us what
- 33:37what you do. So we do a lot of traditional.
- 33:39Karate, you know, like the the tanks, you know, we do like the
- 33:42forms for tanks, you know, and the flashy kicks and and stuff
- 33:46like that. We also do weapons training.
- 33:48So we teach sword stuff, sticks, nun chuckers, lots of different
- 33:52weapons. We have football wrestling there
- 33:55on a Sunday. That them guys are awesome,
- 33:58aren't they? She does like the ladies
- 34:02kickboxing. I do the ladies kickboxing on a
- 34:04Friday. Yeah.
- 34:05It's strange to have a man in there.
- 34:06Do you know what I mean? Because normally we used to say
- 34:08no men allowed, but now we do that.
- 34:11So. Yeah.
- 34:12And then we do that normal kickboxing, don't we?
- 34:14Yeah. So like.
- 34:15Pads, sparring, pad drills. We we are going to be doing a
- 34:20lot of work with G9 Boxing Club. We're we're coming together.
- 34:24So we're going to be like doing stuff with each other as well,
- 34:26kind of collaborating and yeah. Yeah.
- 34:28And doing sort of overlaps with them.
- 34:29Yeah, Yeah. Can you start there?
- 34:31If you've got no experience, so if you've never picked up a pair
- 34:33of pads or never even been into like any club or anything, can
- 34:37you literally start from scratch?
- 34:38Yeah. And this is what we.
- 34:39Say there's no sort of it's never too late to start, we like
- 34:43to say, because it doesn't matter.
- 34:44Like I say, the our oldest student, I don't think he
- 34:46started till near 70, didn't he? And that's right.
- 34:50Yeah, she's. Looking for something
- 34:51retirement, Yeah. And he now he's.
- 34:53He got his black belt and he competed.
- 34:55He fought in, yeah, and. He got a European.
- 34:57Title and yeah. Yeah, so it's never too.
- 35:01Late and so would you say that? The offering that you have at
- 35:04the club is, is is multi level in terms of if somebody wants to
- 35:07just do it as a fitness thing, they can do it.
- 35:09They can do it as a hobby, yeah. If they want to be more kind of
- 35:13serious about it and compete and try and get to elite levels,
- 35:15you'll you'll offer them, offer them that as well.
- 35:17Yeah, we do, yeah. Or like with the.
- 35:19Traditional side, if they wanted to not compete in things but
- 35:22they wanted to grade for their belts, they can do that.
- 35:25We've brought that in with our fitness classes as well.
- 35:27So now they can actually do their levels of fitness
- 35:30gradings, just gives them something to sort of work
- 35:33towards. Yeah.
- 35:34So that option's there or they can just come and train.
- 35:37So, yeah, so it's kind of. Open to anybody and everybody
- 35:39isn't really. Yeah, you go different.
- 35:43Thanks, Caroline. Come and give it a try.
- 35:45Yeah. Absolutely you.
- 35:46Never know, you never like. It Yeah.
- 35:47Absolutely. Who knows?
- 35:49Who knows? Wonders never cease.
- 35:52Marie, if I come back to you again, just sort of a reminder
- 35:55of your kind of experience you've had at the club.
- 35:58You've been there a few years, four years, I think you
- 36:00mentioned. Yeah, about four years for.
- 36:01Me What was it like when you. First joined, what was your kind
- 36:04of induction on boarding sort of experience?
- 36:06I had 0. Fitness.
- 36:08I couldn't even do a proper sit up.
- 36:10And like I say, I've just got my level 1 fitness.
- 36:14But yeah, it's just welcoming. You know, I'd watch some of the
- 36:17classes anyway because they are before or after the children's
- 36:21classes. And yeah, I started off just
- 36:24doing the sparring classes and then got into ladies, then got
- 36:28into circuits. So yeah, do a bit of everything
- 36:32and you got in because. One of your children dared you.
- 36:34Yes, that's right, brilliant and and obviously don't regret any
- 36:39moment of it. No, you don't regret anything.
- 36:41Yeah, and and what's? Your kind of future ambition,
- 36:44how, how do you want to kind of continue with it?
- 36:46I'll keep. Going and doing my level 2 and
- 36:48three and then hopefully she'll become.
- 36:50An instructor for us. Wow, there you go, heard.
- 36:52It here first. No, no, no pressure.
- 36:54Yeah. No, no, no pressure.
- 36:56You can do it right, You can. Do it and in terms of the future
- 36:59for the club then what's ambition?
- 37:01Ambition, Why? Obviously you've been getting a
- 37:02number of years, some great work there, a couple of new
- 37:05initiatives obviously started recently.
- 37:07Anything else you'd want to able to share at the moment about
- 37:10future plans or or sort of we've got some things.
- 37:13To pass leave. Don't we that a bit, But watch
- 37:16this space. Yeah, watch this space.
- 37:18But I. Think just.
- 37:19Continuing to help people like we do and making sure it's an
- 37:23enjoyable environment for everybody that attends.
- 37:27So just quickly. We just like every year we go to
- 37:29the gathering of the World Masters which is 6070 grand
- 37:34masters from all around the world meet and there's probably
- 37:375-6 hundred people there. We just train together.
- 37:40There's no egos, it's just friends sharing a map and
- 37:44sharing their knowledge. Is that UK based?
- 37:46WAS? Overseas.
- 37:46It's in Bridlington, OK. In Bridlington?
- 37:49Yeah, In. May so and it's awesome.
- 37:51I've been going nine years now. So is it always in Bridlington?
- 37:54Always. Yeah.
- 37:55Wow. I.
- 37:55Didn't realise Bridlington. Was the centre of martial art
- 37:57universe. It is there, yeah.
- 38:00Yeah, a bit different. To some of the other places
- 38:02we've been of, isn't it? But yeah.
- 38:04And and in terms of. Other student, obviously we know
- 38:07that you 2 are legends of the sport, other students at the
- 38:11sport that are kind of coming to the sort of elite levels and
- 38:14anyone you want to mention or just generally talk about that
- 38:16you've got I think however. Instructors who help us run it,
- 38:20Ashley and Kat. Yeah.
- 38:23Sianna. Sianna, Andy, yeah, we've got,
- 38:27we've got about 7 instructors there with us who are kind of
- 38:29what the mass. Minimum master level.
- 38:31Are they? They're just under.
- 38:33Just under, but they help, you know, with with the classes.
- 38:35So, you know, we've got a nice brain mix.
- 38:38Of instructors, men, and. Women.
- 38:40Yeah, so it sounds. Like that you've got, you know,
- 38:44you've got good quality of trainers and coaches there that
- 38:48that can cater for people at all levels and and be able to manage
- 38:51that as well. Yeah, I mean, some of them
- 38:53people. Have been with me 20 odd years.
- 38:55Really. You know, so you know, so we're
- 38:57doing something right. Did you set this up?
- 38:59From scratch yourself? I did, yeah.
- 39:01I. Went to a scout set did you and
- 39:02and just opened up and it just went from there.
- 39:06Sounds amazing. And obviously don't regret a
- 39:09minute of it because no, I don't know and.
- 39:11Did you back when? Did you expect to be where you
- 39:13are now, or did you ever think you wouldn't get to this whole
- 39:15level? No, I didn't know.
- 39:16I just. Thought I'd just be.
- 39:17Doing something on a Friday night.
- 39:18On a Friday night, yeah. No, you know, it's.

- 39:27Your daughter. Yeah.
- 39:28You must be incredibly proud of her.
- 39:29She's proud of her. Very proud.
- 39:30Of her, I also want to say for my wife as well, because she
- 39:35does all the behind the scenes stuff what people don't see.
- 39:38So she's a diamond as well. Yeah.
- 39:40And without that? Sort of help us what the stuff
- 39:43that you do see that can't happen, can you really?
- 39:45No, that's right. No, that's right.
- 39:46She's sort of the one. That keeps behind picking up the
- 39:49pieces and putting them all. Yeah, keeps us.
- 39:51In check. All the.
- 39:53More serious stuff, Yeah. And are the other.
- 39:56And you know the other members of your family that actually
- 39:58participate in in in the art and, and.
