- 0:00Time now for back to the basics and healthcare with doctor Harley from Balanced Life
- 0:04Chiropractic. Hey doing, doctor Harley, Hey John, I'm doing fantastic.
- 0:07Definitely loving the cooler weather that's ahead. I mean, summer's fun, but
- 0:12fall is a lot of fun. This is one of my favorite I guess
- 0:15I kind of like spring too, because then all winter you're cold and you're
- 0:17finally getting warm. But the thing I like about this is it's just like
- 0:21you're not hot, you're not cold. It's just right, very true.
- 0:24And when it comes to health, everybody has kind of a different definition in
- 0:28their mind of what healthcare is and what health is. So let's talk about
- 0:32what your basis of healthcare and what health means to you. Yeah, I
- 0:36like asking all of my new patients, you know, what is health or
- 0:39what does it mean to be healthy? To them? What do you think,
- 0:41John, what does health look like to you? For me, it's
- 0:44just not being in pain, you know, because if I'm in pain,
- 0:47I feel like I must not be doing something right. And that's the most
- 0:50common answer I get for most people is a lot of people base their health
- 0:54on how we feel. It's like, well, if I feel good,
- 0:56today, or don't feel good tomorrow like the other day, like I'm not
- 0:58healthy then at that point and I'm healthy days I feel good, But a
- 1:00lot of times help Like the feeling aspect of it can kind of give us
- 1:03a false sensus of purity becau if you think about it. You know,
- 1:07most people don't know they have heart disease until it's in the later stages,
- 1:11but they had to start somewhere, And it's kind of one of those if
- 1:14we started earlier, you know, preventing health problems to begin with, we'd
- 1:19be a lot healthier in the long run. So the feeling bad is kind
- 1:23of one of the last things. So there's all kinds of stuff happening way
- 1:25before I ever feel it exactly. There's so many disease processes. There's so
- 1:30many functions in our body that have no symptoms. You know, we can't
- 1:33necessarily tell how our stomach's functioning or our kidneys until they're not working right,
- 1:38So it's kind of like if we wait until they're not working, then that's
- 1:42been going on long enough, it's going to take a while to start correcting
- 1:44it. So I look at health a little bit differently, and I actually
- 1:47looked up the definition of health wants it was a state of being without disease
- 1:52or injury. Now, most people know when they don't have injuries, right,
- 1:56but we don't always know when we don't have disease, especially in the
- 1:57early stages of it. So I kind of look at that aspects for health
- 2:01and looking more at how's your body of working, how's it functioning? Is
- 2:05it functioning at one hundred percent one hundred percent of the time? That is
- 2:08true optimal health, And that would be probably pretty tough for most people to
- 2:12be at one hundred percent one hundred percent of the time. But that's the
- 2:15goal, right that that's ideal perfect health. Most people are probably running at
- 2:19sixty seventy percent but all the time, or sometimes maybe they're one hundred percent
- 2:24but only sixty percent of the time, and that other forty percent they're kind
- 2:28of all over the place, right, You know, look at your body
- 2:30like a car or a machine in any shape or form. If your car
- 2:35wasn't running at max performance, we probably would want to get it tuned up,
- 2:38fixed up. Most people do, right. Obviously, some people take
- 2:40better care of their bodies in their cars, and some people are the opposite.
- 2:44They take better care of their cars than themselves. But regardless, like
- 2:46we only get one body, if we don't take care of it, it's
- 2:51not going to last us. You know, ninety some years that you know,
- 2:53that's kind of the average lifespan and thing. It's like eighty three or
- 2:55something right now, but it's supposed to last that long. But if we
- 2:58don't take care of it when we're younger, it's gonna be a lot harder
- 3:01getting to that point. And I suppose the same thing could be thought like
- 3:05when you think about a car. If you go in and have your oil
- 3:07change done at the right times, and you get the breakpads changed and do
- 3:12all of the things you're supposed to do, you probably don't have breakdowns.
- 3:15But if you don't do those things and you only respond when there are breakdowns,
- 3:19and when it comes to health, it's probably the same thing. If
- 3:21I take care of myself long term and I don't have the breakdowns, rather
- 3:23than waiting and tell hey, doctor Harley, can you fix this right?
- 3:28Maintenance is much easier. It's much cheaper than having to do a big fix
- 3:31because something actually has broken down. So that's one thing I really talk about
- 3:36patients is more about preventative healthcare or maintenance care, making sure that we're keeping
- 3:40your health where we want it versus waiting for it to start falling apart.
- 3:45If somebody listening is going, boy, I really could probably use some health
- 3:47some help with my healthcare and finding a way to have that maintenance plan and
- 3:53to take care of myself rather than waiting for the breakdowns. How do they
