- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Lucas, last episode we did days of the week. That was a lot of new words! Lucas: Yeah, seven days is a lot. But today we're going back to numbers. We did one to ten a while back, remember? Luna: Oh yeah! Moja, mbili, tatu... I remember up to kumi. But what's after ten? Lucas: That's exactly what we're learning today. Numbers eleven through fifteen. Luna: Oh good. I was afraid we'd skip ahead too fast. Lucas: No, we're taking it slow. So, eleven in Swahili is kumi na moja. Listen: kumi na moja. Luna: Kumi na moja. That sounds like 'ten and one'. Lucas: Exactly. Kumi is ten, na means and, moja is one. So literally ten and one. Luna: That's so logical! So twelve would be kumi na mbili? Lucas: Yes! kumi na mbili. Try it. Luna: Kumi na mbili. Lucas: Perfect. Thirteen is kumi na tatu. Luna: Kumi na tatu. Lucas: Fourteen: kumi na nne. Luna: Kumi na nne. Lucas: And fifteen: kumi na tano. Luna: Kumi na tano. So it's just ten and the unit all the way up to nineteen? Lucas: Exactly. Nineteen would be kumi na tisa. But today we're just doing eleven to fifteen. Luna: Got it. Let me practice: kumi na moja, kumi na mbili, kumi na tatu, kumi na nne, kumi na tano. Lucas: That was smooth. Let's do a quick check. What's eleven? Luna: Kumi na moja. Lucas: Fourteen? Luna: Kumi na nne. Lucas: Fifteen? Luna: Kumi na tano. Lucas: Nailed it. Now let's use them in a little scene. Imagine you're at a market and you want to buy fifteen apples. Luna: Nataka maapulo kumi na tano. Lucas: Perfect. Maapulo kumi na tano. Or if you want twelve bananas? Luna: Nataka ndizi kumi na mbili. Lucas: That's it. Now let's count together from one to fifteen. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Moja, mbili, tatu, nne, tano, sita, saba, nane, tisa, kumi. Luna: Kumi na moja, kumi na mbili, kumi na tatu, kumi na nne, kumi na tano. Lucas: Beautiful. You've got it. Now, before we go on, I want to mention something quickly. Luna: What's that? Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Swahili, maybe you'd like to support the show. Suppose something costs thirteen shillings. Luna: Shilingi kumi na tatu. Lucas: Exactly. Or eleven shillings? Luna: Shilingi kumi na moja. Lucas: You're a natural. Let's do a quick drill. I'll say a number in English, you say it in Swahili. Eleven. Luna: Kumi na moja. Lucas: Thirteen. Luna: Kumi na tatu. Lucas: Fifteen. Luna: Kumi na tano. Lucas: Great. Now let's switch. I'll say the Swahili, you say the English. Kumi na mbili. Luna: Twelve. Lucas: Kumi na nne. Luna: Fourteen. Lucas: Excellent. So today we learned kumi na moja, kumi na mbili, kumi na tatu, kumi na nne, kumi na tano. Luna: I feel like I can count to fifteen now without thinking. Lucas: That's the goal. Keep practicing, and next time we'll go up to twenty. Luna: Looking forward to it. Lucas: Until then, practice these numbers. Thanks for listening to Learn Swahili with Fexingo.
