- 0:00Speaker 1: H Returner Ward podcast Starvady Austin Roads the Code of
- 0:22Speaker 1: Free Tag. First things first, I love this video. Thing
- 0:27Speaker 1: is we can see what shirts were wearing. The only
- 0:29Speaker 1: one with the red shirt on tonight it's Dak And
- 0:33Speaker 1: that's not a shirt red, that is Husker red.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It's a Pickle Tavern shirt.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Pick Girl Tavern, the one bar I've been to in Pirol.
- 0:43Speaker 1: That's the only bar in Pickrel. Well, we are into
- 0:50Speaker 1: fall camp. Guys, everybody across the country's practicing. Uh, Nebraska,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I think, along with the other two I saw was
- 0:58Speaker 1: Ohio State and Alabama hosted an open practice last night
- 1:04Speaker 1: on Saturday, open to the public. It looked like there
- 1:06Speaker 1: were several thousand people there. Money was raised for the
- 1:11Speaker 1: nil Fund go back to the players. It does sound
- 1:14Speaker 1: like a few teams did this. I have my thoughts
- 1:19Speaker 1: on It's interesting, but I think there's a lot of
- 1:21Speaker 1: stuff that people learned from watching practice. And I know
- 1:25Speaker 1: it's early on, but you do you start to see
- 1:27Speaker 1: some things form and play out. I guess, first off,
- 1:31Speaker 1: what what do you what do you think of the
- 1:32Speaker 1: idea of the open practice concept. I mean, every coach
- 1:37Speaker 1: that we've had has done something like this similar, whether
- 1:40Speaker 1: it be a scrimmage. Well, I think it was, Mike Riley,
- 1:43Speaker 1: it was every practice was open to the media at least, Like,
- 1:48Speaker 1: what do you what do you think is in general
- 1:49Speaker 1: of practices and at the college level, college D one
- 1:54Speaker 1: level and the availability to the public media, et cetera.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Wait, what do you mean? Like what do you mean?
- 2:02Speaker 1: What?
- 2:02Speaker 3: I what just think about having that? What do you think?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Like, what do you think that should be open? Closed?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Did?
- 2:08Speaker 4: I think it's fine to have one at the beginning
- 2:11Speaker 4: of the year, just be like, hey, come in, ask
- 2:14Speaker 4: some questions, see what we're doing, but you can hang out.
- 2:16Speaker 3: An extra month. I don't think they should all be
- 2:18Speaker 3: open obviously, because no, that'd be insane. But I think
- 2:23Speaker 3: one at the.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Beginning of the year is fine. You know it wasn't
- 2:26Speaker 4: It doesn't really hurt anything. Give them some practice in
- 2:29Speaker 4: front of some eyes.
- 2:32Speaker 5: I don't know that that's a really good idea right there.
- 2:38Speaker 2: It's a good way to make some money, I guess.
- 2:40Speaker 5: And it's a good way to bring groups into I think.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It was.
- 2:49Speaker 3: That's pretty seat for practice.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Yeah, that's people more than a spring game taker right there.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I think spring games twenty five.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So it just me basically like a spring game part
- 3:05Speaker 2: two a little.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I think it was structured a little more like a
- 3:10Speaker 1: practice versus like spring game was playing a full game.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I don't know. Like I again, I think it's really
- 3:19Speaker 1: good for NIL. I think that was a good idea
- 3:21Speaker 1: to raise some money that way. The only thing from
- 3:25Speaker 1: a coaching standpoint that is a little bit worries some
- 3:28Speaker 1: which I know the coaches I'm sure talk about it
- 3:30Speaker 1: is I mean, it's open, and you can't tell me
- 3:32Speaker 1: that other teams don't don't show up and go they do.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I mean they're gonna go like it if any team
- 3:39Speaker 1: that we play against as an open practice of the public,
- 3:41Speaker 1: like you want to go just to get a feel
- 3:43Speaker 1: for what everything looks like. So the coaches are probably
- 3:46Speaker 1: aware of that. So I'm sure we didn't obviously play
- 3:51Speaker 1: and show all of our cards last night. But at
- 3:53Speaker 1: the same time, I don't I don't know this. I've
- 3:56Speaker 1: ever been a part of a staff or know anybody
- 3:59Speaker 1: at the Division one level, But how I anticipate football
- 4:01Speaker 1: going like there's probably twenty five to thirty five coaches
- 4:04Speaker 1: on a staff, analyst people that help. I mean, every
- 4:08Speaker 1: there's like two or three coaches that are assigned a
- 4:10Speaker 1: team for the upcoming year from when the previous season ends.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So like Ohio State, for example, I'm sure there's two
- 4:18Speaker 1: people on that staff. Like, your job is to know
- 4:21Speaker 1: Nebraska inside now, and yeah, if you see an open practice,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you're probably going to send somebody there to get a
- 4:27Speaker 1: good look at what's going on. So hey, one negative thing,
- 4:31Speaker 1: but I do think as far as raising the funds,
- 4:33Speaker 1: it's good. It does bring hype. I don't know that
- 4:37Speaker 1: we need more hype, but it was another good look
- 4:41Speaker 1: for everybody to see and provide more things to talk about,
- 4:45Speaker 1: which is what we're doing here.
- 4:49Speaker 2: It is Mike Riley's. Every single Mike Raley practice is open.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Not to the public, to the media. I think Jesus
- 4:56Speaker 1: the media.
- 4:58Speaker 2: That's not a good idea.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But he's a nice guy. Why would you know?
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it was it was you got you got in
- 5:08Speaker 1: depth analysis from the media all the time then and
- 5:11Speaker 1: now you just get what they're available to and like,
- 5:15Speaker 1: for example, you get coaches after practice sometimes and they
- 5:19Speaker 1: can explain what they want. So uh, it's good. It
- 5:22Speaker 1: does get these weeks. I feel like they take a
- 5:27Speaker 1: long time to get to week zero or week one
- 5:29Speaker 1: until we actually get kicked off.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So what did you hear from the practice, Because all
- 5:33Speaker 3: I really heard was real look sharp, Hardberg looks improved
- 5:36Speaker 3: and the punting Brian Bushini was shaking quite a few punts.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the stuff that I read, and I
- 5:44Speaker 1: wish I would have went. I was gonna go drink
- 5:49Speaker 1: a little too much alcohol. Didn't make it. Check days,
- 5:53Speaker 1: shout out Wilbur, Wilbur, Nebraska, the Czech capital of America.
- 5:57Speaker 3: That check capital of America.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Oh to believe Wilbur Wi it actually is.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Look it up self proclaimed.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It actually is.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It's it's legit. It actually is five five days every
- 6:11Speaker 1: year they have this. There's a bunch of pod it's fun.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Check Capital of America.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Inted next year.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Right, first week August. So that's where I was. We
- 6:30Speaker 1: just lost Dak. Dak just said, I'm out of here.
- 6:33Speaker 4: It's like Austin wasn't invited to check days. I feel awkward.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I'm just gonna get off, all right.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Yeah, there's some there's a website in the foreign language
- 6:43Speaker 3: is talking about Wilburn, Nebraska.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So it is, it's legit. So anyways, that's where I
- 6:50Speaker 1: was going to go with the practice. But I hanging
- 6:53Speaker 1: out there and yeah again today reading stuff, it uh
- 6:58Speaker 1: looked like like you said, real with sharp harbord looked decent.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I heard Danny Kalon had a rough practice as far
- 7:08Speaker 1: as the other quarterbacks like Lukelong or not Luke Long.
- 7:11Speaker 1: But Jalen Grahamstead there he is about the time. He
- 7:19Speaker 1: just wanted to.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Leave us there we go.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I don't know how I left that, Uh, Jalen Grahams said,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I I thought I heard did some good things. He's
- 7:28Speaker 1: the reigning NAI quarterback of the year. So I think
- 7:32Speaker 1: our quarterback room, I mean, it can't be worse than
- 7:36Speaker 1: last year, right, So I think there are some solid
- 7:39Speaker 1: uh performances there yesterday. And it sounds like our receivers
- 7:42Speaker 1: is some good things that there's a little battle I
- 7:46Speaker 1: think for that left tackle spot with pro Hosca and Corkoran.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So that sounds like that was a topic of conversation.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean it sounded like it went well.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Hunting like that's scary Bruccini bombs.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Where.
- 8:08Speaker 1: The kicking game is one thing it just it is.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's scary, like it should not be us mm hmm.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Luckily, we'll only be kicking extra points this year, am
- 8:21Speaker 3: I right?
- 8:21Speaker 1: Boys?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah? And I mean this piggybacks off of that. But
- 8:28Speaker 1: what I wanted to do today for this episode, mainly,
- 8:31Speaker 1: it's talk about things that we think need to be
- 8:34Speaker 1: focused on or stressed or like key points of emphasis here,
- 8:39Speaker 1: as if we were the three coaches of the Nebraska
- 8:41Speaker 1: football team, Like what are we overemphasizing this fall? And
- 8:47Speaker 1: I think that includes some of the things we saw yesterday,
- 8:49Speaker 1: but just in general, like what should we be focused
- 8:53Speaker 1: on for us to reach our goals? Which, whatever whatever
- 8:58Speaker 1: our goals are, what do we need to be focusing
- 9:01Speaker 1: on here these next three weeks? So we're gonna each
- 9:05Speaker 1: list off three I you want me to go first,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I really don't care.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Yeah, go first.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Well, I don't want to do the one that probably
- 9:16Speaker 1: everybody has on there, So I'm gonna I'm gonna be
- 9:19Speaker 1: a little bit different to start because I know you
- 9:21Speaker 1: guys probably have my first one.
- 9:23Speaker 3: You have my first one.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but I guess I have my first one too, So.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna starve my second one. Defensively, we
- 9:33Speaker 1: need to continue to be creative and evolve from what
- 9:36Speaker 1: we had last year. What I'm a little scared of
- 9:40Speaker 1: is we are gonna think our defense was damn good
- 9:43Speaker 1: last year. We're gonna come in, ride in the high
- 9:48Speaker 1: and not really take the next step that we need
- 9:51Speaker 1: to here, especially with a lot of these new teams coming.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So like again, I don't know what that looks like,
- 9:56Speaker 1: and I don't know a whole lot about all the
- 9:59Speaker 1: different nuances a football defense, but I do think the
- 10:03Speaker 1: three three five was very successful in year one here
- 10:08Speaker 1: and when people doubted it, but we got to continue
- 10:12Speaker 1: to build on that. And we talked about this last
- 10:14Speaker 1: year a lot. How the three three five gives you
- 10:18Speaker 1: some chances to blitz differently, mix things up. It's tough
- 10:21Speaker 1: to kind of get a pre snap read. So that
- 10:26Speaker 1: all worked well, but we need to continue to evolve
- 10:28Speaker 1: and move forward with that. And I will say it
- 10:30Speaker 1: sounds like that the big approach is forcing more turnovers
- 10:35Speaker 1: on the defensive end, getting more sacks. That was specifically
- 10:38Speaker 1: talked about from Tony White and Matt Rulans and press
- 10:41Speaker 1: conferences last week about getting more sacks, getting more turnovers
- 10:45Speaker 1: from this group, because we did not do a good
- 10:47Speaker 1: job of that last year. So I like to hear that.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I think that tells me we're going to be maybe
- 10:54Speaker 1: a little more this year, Gamble. We're gonna blitz more,
- 10:58Speaker 1: which risk comes with downside.
- 11:03Speaker 5: If you want more saxon three three three five, you're
- 11:05Speaker 5: gonna have to blitz more.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Yep.
- 11:07Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 11:09Speaker 1: But that's my one big focus is like, don't don't
- 11:11Speaker 1: just be satisfied and say our defense is gonna be fine.
- 11:13Speaker 1: We're gonna be good again this year. All we got
- 11:15Speaker 1: to focus on is our offense. Fixing that and I
- 11:18Speaker 1: think our defense needs to actually start scoring points for
- 11:21Speaker 1: us if they can. We're creating opportunities for our offense.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Your best player, according to EA Sports, is on that
- 11:29Speaker 2: to have the ball.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Dang.
- 11:31Speaker 1: All right, Yeah, if we have time at the end here,
- 11:35Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna talk about our our experiences on
- 11:37Speaker 1: the video game so far and what we think of
- 11:40Speaker 1: some of our players.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I think I don't think we have time.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Well, then, Dak, you better elaborate here on your first one.
- 11:50Speaker 2: My first one.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I special teams for sure is something that you want
- 11:54Speaker 5: to really work on.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Albano, he's up and down big time.
- 12:01Speaker 5: You want to surgery, you want to you want I'm
- 12:06Speaker 5: confidence in your special teams.
- 12:07Speaker 2: That's something you don't want to go into a game
- 12:08Speaker 2: worrying about.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah, Alvano is having what was it with his knee
- 12:12Speaker 1: or hamstring or something that he had hamstring surgery. That's
- 12:17Speaker 1: what That's what we want to hear from our kicker, Like,
- 12:19Speaker 1: good God, is he out of the year.
- 12:22Speaker 3: No, they say it should be back. It was a
- 12:25Speaker 3: minor It was a minor surgery, is why I heard.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I don't know, but yeah, that's that's not good. I
- 12:31Speaker 2: didn't know that.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Yeah, tell me this then, I mean I agree, I
- 12:34Speaker 1: completely agree with that. This is a hard question, so
- 12:39Speaker 1: you might have to think a little deeper here, open
- 12:42Speaker 1: that big brain ears. If you're the special teams coach,
- 12:45Speaker 1: like what are what are you changing.
- 12:52Speaker 3: A better kicker?
- 12:53Speaker 1: I mean that's yeah, I don't I don't know if
- 12:58Speaker 1: we're talking about kicking it, I mean kick specifically, right,
- 13:01Speaker 1: I mean there's there's a lot of scheming. We we
- 13:04Speaker 1: know that from.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Realistically special teams. On the defensive side, I feel like
- 13:08Speaker 3: we did pretty well last year, more field goals than
- 13:12Speaker 3: we've probably blocked in the previous four years combined.
- 13:16Speaker 5: If you're puner, shanking balls right now in an open practice,
- 13:19Speaker 5: though you got major problems.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And I mean that question to you is kind of
- 13:25Speaker 1: a trick question, but because I like, it's hard when
- 13:29Speaker 1: when what do you do as a coach besides just
- 13:32Speaker 1: trust that the guys that you have can punk the
- 13:36Speaker 1: ball down the field decent and make field goals, make
- 13:39Speaker 1: forty two yard field goals, like if we're missing them
- 13:43Speaker 1: and shanking them and like that's all they're practicing, right,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I'm sure that's all those guys practice and they should
- 13:49Speaker 1: be that. But like Austin said, get better players? How
- 13:54Speaker 1: can we not do that?
- 13:55Speaker 2: Though?
- 13:55Speaker 1: I mean, seriously, it is it that hard to find it?
- 13:59Speaker 1: Just a average kicker these days? Like I have no idea.
- 14:02Speaker 3: There's only so many kicking positions on each team. You're
- 14:04Speaker 3: not like competing for a ton of spots.
- 14:07Speaker 5: The thing about kicking is is mostly mental too. Once
- 14:11Speaker 5: you once you're shot mentally year, just you're done. Well.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we had the big ten kicker of the year
- 14:16Speaker 3: and Drew Brown and then the next year you fell apart.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we we talked about that. Like with our kicking,
- 14:24Speaker 1: we've been blessed with price, spoiled with good kickers, and
- 14:29Speaker 1: now maybe seems worse than it is, but I do.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I don't think it's good. It hasn't been for a
- 14:35Speaker 1: couple of years now. But that's a big part of
- 14:37Speaker 1: the game. It's a big part of winning and losing
- 14:39Speaker 1: close football games, which we've lost a lot. So I
- 14:43Speaker 1: think that is I didn't actually have that on my list,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but like, that's a that's a good one back, Like,
- 14:49Speaker 1: I think that needs that needed to be brought up
- 14:51Speaker 1: and talked about because it is scarier right now from
- 14:53Speaker 1: a special team standpoint.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Who is your backup kicker? Do you guys even know?
- 14:58Speaker 1: I got it right here? It is nko Otomanelli, right yep.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And then we have our backup punters, Camden Cook. Maybe
- 15:08Speaker 1: we got some Sam Cook relations? Is that is that?
- 15:11Speaker 3: That's his brother, isn't it?
- 15:12Speaker 1: And I might be I don't know.
- 15:14Speaker 3: I thought they were actually related.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Why can't Why can't he be a good punter?
- 15:19Speaker 2: I meant, hell, they're probably battling for a spot now.
- 15:24Speaker 3: No, that's a good one. Deck. I had the same.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I had the exact same. It is Sam Cook's Oh,
- 15:28Speaker 3: it's Sam Cook's son.
- 15:31Speaker 1: What at?
- 15:33Speaker 4: I googled Camden Cook and Sam Cook's son I thought
- 15:35Speaker 4: he had like a really young brother, but.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Well, Sam Cook's old. I mean, he's probably what in
- 15:38Speaker 1: his forty sound Yeah, I.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Guess I didn't even think about that.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I thought he was, like, I mean, he toned for
- 15:44Speaker 1: a long long time in the NFL.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Doesn't seem that long ago, but I suppose. Yeah, so
- 15:49Speaker 3: it's his kid.
- 15:51Speaker 1: So I mean that you said that was kind of
- 15:53Speaker 1: That was one of your points. Is there any anything
- 15:54Speaker 1: else you want to add or elaborate on. Uh?
- 15:57Speaker 6: No, I was gonna focus mostly on the offensive side
- 15:59Speaker 6: of just just getting those kicks down. You know, they
- 16:03Speaker 6: have a whole TV series called Chasing three. You know what,
- 16:07Speaker 6: the easiest way to get three points is hit a
- 16:10Speaker 6: freaking field goal from somewhere on the field. But no,
- 16:15Speaker 6: I yeah, I agree with most Dak points. You just
- 16:19Speaker 6: it's the kicking side. I feel defensively we did all right.
- 16:21Speaker 3: But outside of getting better kickers, I don't know what
- 16:24Speaker 3: you do outside of just trusting the process and you know,
- 16:28Speaker 3: trying to build good football players with good football mentality.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But yeah, move on's number two.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I'm gonna go.
- 16:38Speaker 4: We've talked, you know, we got great quarterback. We keep
- 16:42Speaker 4: talking about how deeper wide receiver room is, so we
- 16:44Speaker 4: got to have a good pocket pass protection. I don't
- 16:48Speaker 4: want to see any bullshit where Dylan RelA is trying
- 16:51Speaker 4: to scramble and having to flick it out to you know,
- 16:55Speaker 4: guy on the flat. So I think that should be
- 16:57Speaker 4: a focus, especially.
- 16:58Speaker 3: When you know, i'd say Raola's strength of his arm strength,
- 17:03Speaker 3: so if he wanted to let it rip down field,
- 17:04Speaker 3: he's gonna have to have time to throw it. Offensive
- 17:07Speaker 3: line play hasn't been great. It's definitely should be some
- 17:10Speaker 3: focus of your core three of protecting your passer.
- 17:15Speaker 5: You guys, last year though, you guys, you probably think
- 17:18Speaker 5: Oman's line was better than coming in the year was
- 17:21Speaker 5: like they it wasn't awful last year.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I agree, but two years ago disastrous.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Yeah, two years two years ago was the worst.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Our quarterbacks weren't real throwing threats, So I think that
- 17:32Speaker 3: impacted Also our defensive played us. You know, they're able
- 17:35Speaker 3: to live more on us, so obviously impacts the pass
- 17:39Speaker 3: protection a little bit more. But I think that's one
- 17:41Speaker 3: of your focuses is just keep keep real up. If
- 17:45Speaker 3: you really think he's you know, the quarterback that's gonna
- 17:48Speaker 3: risurrect Nebraska.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Good though you have you have comments in your backups,
- 17:53Speaker 2: so if he does get.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Hurt, that's true.
- 17:56Speaker 1: At least we have a guy that's played before, and
- 17:58Speaker 1: I mean I do I think I think uh Jalen
- 18:02Speaker 1: Graham Staid, from what it sounds like, can maybe hold
- 18:05Speaker 1: his own which which is helped helpful. The offensive line,
- 18:10Speaker 1: as we've talked about on here several times, is the
- 18:12Speaker 1: most important part of your offense. And it doesn't matter
- 18:15Speaker 1: who you have back there. If we can't block, you're
- 18:18Speaker 1: in trouble. I am hopeful that we have a lot
- 18:23Speaker 1: of guys that I don't call them veterans, but guys
- 18:25Speaker 1: that have played a lot of snaps. I mean Ben Hart,
- 18:28Speaker 1: Corker and Paasca, some of them battled injuries, Ben Scott,
- 18:34Speaker 1: you know, playing for two different Power five schools. Justin
- 18:37Speaker 1: Evans got some minutes last year. I mean, because we've
- 18:40Speaker 1: been so banged up and guys have been moved around
- 18:42Speaker 1: a lot, and I think we're starting potentially someone who's
- 18:46Speaker 1: our right guard. I think it's Mike and Mazuka I
- 18:50Speaker 1: think right now is who was playing that yesterday. So
- 18:54Speaker 1: like we we got guys that have played, which I
- 18:59Speaker 1: think is promising, but it, like you said, kind of
- 19:02Speaker 1: like our defense I said earlier, we have to take
- 19:03Speaker 1: a step up from an offensive line group to protect
- 19:05Speaker 1: Dylan because what is Dylan's strength as a quarterback right
- 19:08Speaker 1: now from what we've seen, is his ability to throw
- 19:11Speaker 1: the deep ball. And all we keep hearing is our
- 19:13Speaker 1: receivers how much of a vertical threat they are? Well,
- 19:16Speaker 1: we are, ye, and we've had none of that vertical
- 19:20Speaker 1: threat in the past. We saw some in the spring game.
- 19:23Speaker 1: So like you need time to get down the field.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Well crap.
- 19:27Speaker 5: I thought Ben Harns is one of the worst players coachetball.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Come in last year and he actually had a decent year.
- 19:32Speaker 3: It was Yep, you did actually have a DC year.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Dah Number two, just hold on the ball.
- 19:40Speaker 2: That's last year.
- 19:42Speaker 5: I mean, you're going to have a different, different quarterback now,
- 19:46Speaker 5: but last year fumbles and interceptions just.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Killed you that card game.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Your defense played their balls off and you guys, your
- 19:52Speaker 5: offense just killed you that game.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I don't know, it's big.
- 19:57Speaker 5: It's big to hold on the ball and not give
- 19:59Speaker 5: the other team just bumbling and I'm.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Assuming we all had ball security.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Number one says turnovers and all caps underlined, and then
- 20:09Speaker 1: right after his ball security, do.
- 20:11Speaker 3: You think there's to being hyper focused on ball security.
- 20:16Speaker 5: I mean, I I don't know what you can expect
- 20:18Speaker 5: from last year. You don't come into your thinking you're
- 20:19Speaker 5: gonna play three quarterbacks like it was a toss up
- 20:24Speaker 5: last year. But I mean that's kind of it's kind
- 20:27Speaker 5: of on the rule.
- 20:28Speaker 1: For I'm gonna say, dak own your points like you
- 20:32Speaker 1: were all time from the beginning of the year last
- 20:35Speaker 1: year and Jeff Simms when we were like, oh, maybe
- 20:37Speaker 1: and you're like no, he turns it over all the
- 20:39Speaker 1: time and we're like, no, that was just the first game.
- 20:42Speaker 5: No, yeah, that's that's that's not rule for picking him.
- 20:47Speaker 1: But yeah, we don't got to dive back into how
- 20:51Speaker 1: that went because we all know that. But turnovers, and
- 20:56Speaker 1: we talked about this a lot too in Big ten
- 20:59Speaker 1: media days and it comes up a lot in conversation
- 21:02Speaker 1: of getting a positive turnover margin. I mean, I think
- 21:06Speaker 1: we've had one year in the last fourteen to fifteen
- 21:08Speaker 1: years that we've had a positive turnover March you might
- 21:10Speaker 1: have said that before too, and he knows that's a
- 21:14Speaker 1: focus now. At the same time, he also said we
- 21:17Speaker 1: were just we weren't even getting hit and we were
- 21:19Speaker 1: fumbling like we were just were doing stupid stuff that
- 21:24Speaker 1: can't happen. And I guess you can say it's on
- 21:29Speaker 1: the players and sometimes do their job, but at the
- 21:30Speaker 1: same time, as a coach, you got to find a
- 21:33Speaker 1: way to get the reps in practice, simulate the environments,
- 21:36Speaker 1: get them mentally in the state they're going to be
- 21:38Speaker 1: in a game so that stuff like that doesn't happen.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Like that is number one most important thing. We don't
- 21:43Speaker 1: turn the ball over. I feel like we're going to
- 21:44Speaker 1: make a bowl game, like bottom line if we have
- 21:48Speaker 1: a positive turnover margin, I like our chances of getting
- 21:50Speaker 1: to seven seven wins. But we have not done that
- 21:53Speaker 1: in a long, long, long, long, long long time.
- 21:57Speaker 4: And I say, you know, there's they're they're trying to
- 22:00Speaker 4: stick to their guns and be like, hey, if you
- 22:01Speaker 4: fumble the ball, you're not playing. And luckily we feel
- 22:06Speaker 4: I feel like we all agree that we have better
- 22:08Speaker 4: depth of their skill position. So if someone gets benched
- 22:10Speaker 4: for fumbling the ball, it's like, Okay, it's not he's
- 22:12Speaker 4: not like he's the best options, Like we got another
- 22:14Speaker 4: guy who can play.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. I will say we have
- 22:19Speaker 1: better depth. I don't know that we have. We still
- 22:21Speaker 1: don't have the superstar skilled players, the All Stars, but
- 22:24Speaker 1: we got a lot of similar guys. I mean at
- 22:26Speaker 1: the running back position. I think there's four or five
- 22:29Speaker 1: guys that potentially could start now. It does look like EMMITTT.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Johnson potentially could be the day one if we're going
- 22:36Speaker 1: off in practice last night, but Ramir got a lot
- 22:39Speaker 1: of snaps. Dal Dell's going to be in that mix. Obviously,
- 22:42Speaker 1: Gabe Urban is going to be around in that mix.
- 22:44Speaker 1: There's just there's a lot of options that if yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 1: you can't take care of the ball, you're not going
- 22:48Speaker 1: to play. And that's one way of stressing it and
- 22:50Speaker 1: putting importance on it.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Receivers too, number one one receiver last night, it sounds
- 22:58Speaker 5: like Jamal Banks and they are both. I was gonna say,
- 23:03Speaker 5: Malcot doesn't seem like a number one wide receiver.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Is gonna have a He's gonna have a interesting middle role,
- 23:09Speaker 1: I think because.
- 23:11Speaker 3: He gets on the field that much. Because you got Banks,
- 23:14Speaker 3: may Or Lloyd and then Barney looked, like.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I said, looked really good.
- 23:22Speaker 3: I gc is a blue guy.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Sounds like he might actually be a special guy.
- 23:29Speaker 5: I had no clues back how many years he played football.
- 23:32Speaker 5: It seems like a six year, right, it's gotta be.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of options, so I do. Here's here's
- 23:41Speaker 1: the turnover parts that scares me. I'm hoping fumbling will
- 23:43Speaker 1: be better. Rayola cannot come in the Colorado game is
- 23:49Speaker 1: the main one that I'm talking about early on, and
- 23:52Speaker 1: think that he is Patrick Mahomes and everybody's calling him
- 23:56Speaker 1: and just be careless throwing it around. Uh, those Colorado's
- 24:01Speaker 1: b backs are gonna be athletic and quick. We can't
- 24:05Speaker 1: get over greedy Like we talked about him before.
- 24:08Speaker 2: We didn't.
- 24:08Speaker 1: We don't need him to come be a super star.
- 24:09Speaker 1: He needs to be a good game manager. Here is
- 24:11Speaker 1: freshman year and build on what we did last year,
- 24:14Speaker 1: which our offense is bad. It doesn't need to take
- 24:18Speaker 1: go from a two to a ten in the first
- 24:20Speaker 1: three games. We need to just take care of the ball.
- 24:23Speaker 1: That's where the turnovers come. Like, I'm scared it could
- 24:26Speaker 1: be three picks against Colorado like and it can't be
- 24:29Speaker 1: Like it can't and we're we're not gonna win that
- 24:32Speaker 1: game if that happens.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Well, shit, how many is this the first year's five men,
- 24:36Speaker 5: five or six years since you've had an easy game
- 24:39Speaker 5: to start out the year, it's it's been Big ten
- 24:43Speaker 5: teams for.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Like since twenty nineteen. I think since we us first
- 24:47Speaker 3: rainout game that was the last Big ten starter.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yep. So yeah, I mean turnovers is my number two
- 24:57Speaker 1: as well. So I'll move on to my third one here.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And it's very very general, and I'm not saying we're
- 25:05Speaker 1: not doing a good job of it. I think that
- 25:07Speaker 1: rule has its mentality, and especially our defense, but the
- 25:10Speaker 1: whole staff is believe physicality and toughness. In practice, everything
- 25:16Speaker 1: needs to be tough, it needs to be hard. We
- 25:18Speaker 1: just talked about our depth, that we have some skill positions.
- 25:20Speaker 1: We have some guys that have played a lot of
- 25:22Speaker 1: snaps in the oppensive side of the ball. Defensively, we're
- 25:25Speaker 1: pretty deep in our secondary. Our defensive line, we got
- 25:28Speaker 1: guys that have been there for a long time, like
- 25:30Speaker 1: our linebackers are where I'm a little bit nervous, but
- 25:33Speaker 1: everything needs to be tough as hell in practice. I
- 25:37Speaker 1: know it's been hot the past few days, but it
- 25:40Speaker 1: needs to be hard on the guys, and I think
- 25:42Speaker 1: the staff is a good job of that, but to
- 25:44Speaker 1: make strides trying to build the culture, turn a corner,
- 25:48Speaker 1: get over this no Bowl game hump. Everything should be
- 25:52Speaker 1: so difficult that games seem easy when they get there.
- 25:56Speaker 1: And like I said, I think, I think from what
- 26:00Speaker 1: we've heard, but that also could be biased that the
- 26:02Speaker 1: staff does a good job of all of that. And
- 26:05Speaker 1: that's more coaching in general. Right, you want to make
- 26:07Speaker 1: your practices harder than games, and we I hope we're
- 26:11Speaker 1: practice are tackling in practice. I hope we're taking people
- 26:14Speaker 1: to the ground. We haven't heard much injury news as
- 26:17Speaker 1: of late, so I hope, I hope, I hope everything
- 26:21Speaker 1: is just a dog fight competition wise, in practice, because
- 26:27Speaker 1: that obviously it wasn't happening under Frost. We know that
- 26:30Speaker 1: we heard year wonder rule that was happening a lot.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I don't know if we're just assuming that that's going
- 26:35Speaker 1: to be the case now, but that's that's my third one.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Just be tough physical constantly.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I kind of had that as one of my h
- 26:46Speaker 3: you know, first one out because I you know, I
- 26:47Speaker 3: figured we're all going to have both security special teams.
- 26:49Speaker 3: But at the same thing, I don't forget what we
- 26:50Speaker 3: did well last year being physical on defense, running the ball.
- 26:56Speaker 3: So I totally agree with that third two.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Just yours?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah play, I.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Mean I kind of had just stick with what you
- 27:09Speaker 5: did last year defensively basically, I mean you're gonna change that, yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Which I was dead wrong about the three three five,
- 27:19Speaker 1: but see, yeah, like that's kind of countering my first
- 27:25Speaker 1: one a little bit. Like I get what you're saying,
- 27:29Speaker 1: continue what we do well at but at the same time,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I don't. It can't be the same thing like it
- 27:33Speaker 1: has it has to last year.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Last year. We're pretty creative, correct, I mean you could
- 27:38Speaker 3: argue that's a continuation.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you got a third one left right.
- 27:46Speaker 4: No, that's it, man, I had both scarious special Team's
- 27:49Speaker 4: pocket passer and be physical. So congrats, we all think
- 27:52Speaker 4: the same boys, We did it.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Great podcast.
- 27:56Speaker 2: We actually have the same three.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:02Speaker 3: I don't know how I feel about matching with Dakie.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know, I'm the only one of the more we're
- 28:08Speaker 2: read today.
- 28:10Speaker 3: That's true.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, we can get go into this EA sports
- 28:19Speaker 1: range a little bit, So I will say we're gonna
- 28:22Speaker 1: do a deeper dive into the depth chart offense and
- 28:24Speaker 1: defense here, probably in our next few episodes, we'll look
- 28:31Speaker 1: at different positions, go through a little more deeper what
- 28:36Speaker 1: we just talked about. But we've been pushing this off
- 28:40Speaker 1: because we've rung out of time in our past a
- 28:43Speaker 1: few episodes, which I guess I'll mention this too. By
- 28:47Speaker 1: the way, we do only still do forty minute episodes
- 28:49Speaker 1: because of our time limit and we're too lazy or
- 28:52Speaker 1: frugal or don't make money to pay for Zoom Advanced
- 28:56Speaker 1: or whatever the heck we need to do. So that's
- 29:00Speaker 1: why our episodes are forty but it's twice a week,
- 29:03Speaker 1: so you're getting the best of both worlds. That being said,
- 29:09Speaker 1: I'll pull them up here. Here's where Nebraska ranks. And
- 29:14Speaker 1: so the game came out. I mean, I I know
- 29:17Speaker 1: Dak's played it a lot Austin so.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Many days of work. I haven't played it at all.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I don't have to. All I have is a switch.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It's almost worth getting a PS five.
- 29:25Speaker 3: And I honestly thought about it's.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I straight up the here's here's the thing. The game,
- 29:32Speaker 1: the game itself just like every other game, and all
- 29:35Speaker 1: the Madden haters like people are complaining about it. My
- 29:39Speaker 1: mindset for this first one was just appreciate that it's back,
- 29:42Speaker 1: and yes, there's some flaws with it, but I even
- 29:47Speaker 1: think they've exceeded a lot of my expectations. And I'm
- 29:51Speaker 1: when I when I do like, especially these college football games,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I appreciate probably more than the average person, all the
- 29:57Speaker 1: realism of the stadium, as the announcers, the commentating, the
- 30:02Speaker 1: flow of a dynasty. The recruiting is like, that's why
- 30:06Speaker 1: Austin needs to get it, because you would you wouldn't
- 30:08Speaker 1: work the recruiting on it's so good.
- 30:10Speaker 2: You're right, probably it takes a lot of time. M hm.
- 30:14Speaker 1: So it's it's legit. They did a really good job.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Heye.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I spent a lot, a lot of hours on it already,
- 30:21Speaker 1: probably more than I want to admit. But uh, Dak,
- 30:26Speaker 1: what's your initial game thoughts on it?
- 30:30Speaker 5: I love how real it is, like the tackling. Everything
- 30:33Speaker 5: just feels super real about it. Like you said, the
- 30:35Speaker 5: stadium like, and it's it's real about how you go
- 30:39Speaker 5: and play, Say, go the swamp. It's a lot tougher
- 30:42Speaker 5: than going freaking Wyoming. But and it's like the homefield
- 30:46Speaker 5: fans is huge in the game. It's I don't know,
- 30:51Speaker 5: I don't know if I agree with the rankings on
- 30:53Speaker 5: the stadiums, but.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Where they have where they have Gaylord Memorial.
- 30:58Speaker 2: At I think I think it was eleven. If I'm right, I.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Think it was nine. But yeah, so Austin at what
- 31:09Speaker 1: Dak's stay into, which is I forgot to mention that
- 31:12Speaker 1: when you go on the road, the game makes it
- 31:15Speaker 1: really hard, Like if you're a freshman quarterback on the road,
- 31:18Speaker 1: like you can't audible plays, no one can hear you
- 31:21Speaker 1: half the time, don't even know what receivers are buttons
- 31:24Speaker 1: because they're they're gone because you're on the road, and
- 31:26Speaker 1: it makes it really really tough. It's cool, like obviously
- 31:31Speaker 1: people are going to figure the game out and get
- 31:33Speaker 1: all the hacks the really good players. But they did
- 31:37Speaker 1: a good job the rankings. And there's obviously bugs with
- 31:40Speaker 1: the playoff culturable playoff format, which that's a whole nother
- 31:43Speaker 1: conversation that I think we should talk about because I
- 31:48Speaker 1: think it's a lot's up in the air. But I
- 31:50Speaker 1: want to talk about the Nebraska players here. I think
- 31:52Speaker 1: we're like eighty five ish overall, eighty four overall for
- 31:55Speaker 1: a team on offense, blind blows. Thanks for bringing that up.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So here, here's our in, Austin. Maybe you know pricing
- 32:04Speaker 1: them maybe if you don't give the rankings up.
- 32:08Speaker 3: I have our individual player rankings up.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Okay, So I was gonna have you guests to see
- 32:13Speaker 1: if you knew where people are.
- 32:14Speaker 3: I've I only looked at the top three, so I
- 32:16Speaker 3: haven't looked past.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Don't go beyond that. So top three, uh, best overall
- 32:22Speaker 1: in the game. Tommy Hill eighty nine for us, Like,
- 32:26Speaker 1: I don't know. I guess I don't. I don't have
- 32:29Speaker 1: many thoughts on it. Isaac Gifford second in Nasha put
- 32:33Speaker 1: Monkers third, like three defensive guys the leader rankings, I
- 32:40Speaker 1: don't know. I think all those guys are justifiable where
- 32:42Speaker 1: they're at. So I think some people did get screwed
- 32:44Speaker 1: and some guy overhyped. I think these guys are all
- 32:47Speaker 1: good where they're at.
- 32:51Speaker 2: I don't even know what what is Ryla ranked. I
- 32:53Speaker 2: don't even know.
- 32:54Speaker 1: We're gonna get there. So Austin, I want you to
- 32:55Speaker 1: start naming some guys you think they're kind of next
- 32:58Speaker 1: up here.
- 32:59Speaker 3: I would guess Sidoni.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Ifdoni's coming right up, he's six.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Mmmm. Ben Scott might be sneaky high.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Ben Scott got absolutely screwed.
- 33:17Speaker 3: He really is.
- 33:19Speaker 1: He's to me, the one that got screwed in the
- 33:20Speaker 1: ranking seventy eight, he's I mean, he's way down there
- 33:23Speaker 1: for everybody else.
- 33:25Speaker 5: We didn't bring up that. You start the game, Nebraska,
- 33:28Speaker 5: the fake running back.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Thanks for bringing that up. Yeah, our our running back
- 33:34Speaker 1: is not a not an actual player starting running back.
- 33:38Speaker 1: But he's not ranked the highest, but the default depth
- 33:40Speaker 1: chart puts I can't remember his name because I saw
- 33:43Speaker 1: him out right away, ud so. But but the second
- 33:47Speaker 1: highest running back, or the guy that plays a lot,
- 33:49Speaker 1: is Dante Daldell, which is interesting, but Dowdell, Ramier, Emmett,
- 33:56Speaker 1: they're all like, I think the same. Yeah they all
- 33:59Speaker 1: seventy nine. Seventy nine is em and then yeah they're
- 34:03Speaker 1: all three or seventy nine overall.
- 34:06Speaker 3: I guess hard dogs up there.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yep, he's eighty two.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Uh. I feel like Banks, he was pretty good.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yep, Banks fifth, Banks is fifth, and Nyor was is
- 34:23Speaker 1: a seventh. So I mean you named a lot of
- 34:25Speaker 1: guys at the top. I think what this tells us
- 34:29Speaker 1: a little bit is those two receivers are gonna play
- 34:31Speaker 1: a lot. And I mean I think that even before
- 34:34Speaker 1: Big Ten media days. It it sounds like they came
- 34:37Speaker 1: in and took control over the locker, the receiving core
- 34:42Speaker 1: locker room because it was such a young group, even
- 34:45Speaker 1: being two newcomers, which I think is good. It's what's needed.
- 34:48Speaker 1: A lot of those other guys Jylen, Lloyd Malachi obviously
- 34:51Speaker 1: are here last year, but they're young. Four offensive linemen
- 34:56Speaker 1: in the top No. Three in the top ten, Ben
- 34:59Speaker 1: Hard fourth. I thought that was interesting. Whoa Ben Hart?
- 35:05Speaker 3: Wait? So three in the top ten, so I don't
- 35:09Speaker 3: even know who the third one would be.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Nine and ten or Justin Evans and Teddy Proasca okay,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and Corcoran's seventy nine overall, and then Ben Scott's seventy eight.
- 35:19Speaker 1: So I mean our team is very balanced, which I
- 35:21Speaker 1: think is what we see.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I did.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I just thought Ben Scott got screwed because like.
- 35:28Speaker 3: One of the best pass protecting in centers in like
- 35:32Speaker 3: the Big Ten last year.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Yeah, like I thought he was one of our best
- 35:34Speaker 1: offensive linemen. So last thing I'll say about the game,
- 35:39Speaker 1: and this ties a little bit to our playing style
- 35:43Speaker 1: because I do think this is what's gonna work in
- 35:45Speaker 1: real life, Like we're gonna have to run the ball
- 35:48Speaker 1: to set up Rayola to throw a downfield. I just
- 35:52Speaker 1: think it's gonna be hard for us to come out
- 35:53Speaker 1: and throw it forty times a game. And maybe that's
- 35:56Speaker 1: what we're gonna do. I don't know, but we're gonna
- 35:58Speaker 1: have to use a solid, balanced running attack, and I
- 36:02Speaker 1: think our big plays need to come from our speed
- 36:07Speaker 1: receivers down the field on the game, Like if Malachi
- 36:10Speaker 1: or Jaylen Lloyd are on the outside and they're in
- 36:13Speaker 1: press coverage, it's almost a cheat code because they just
- 36:16Speaker 1: run right by him and you can tap it with Rayola.
- 36:18Speaker 1: He's got a monster arm and you can score a
- 36:20Speaker 1: touchdown a lot. So, but I do I think that's
- 36:24Speaker 1: going to be realistic, Like we need to take advantage
- 36:26Speaker 1: of opportunities when those guys are open down the field
- 36:29Speaker 1: to get big plays. And I think we have the
- 36:31Speaker 1: players potentially to do that this year.
- 36:34Speaker 4: But I think players play the game, They're like, this
- 36:36Speaker 4: is where they can do really well in the game.
- 36:37Speaker 3: I should give it a shot in real life.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I think.
- 36:40Speaker 3: So.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I've bet a lot of them do. Like I think
- 36:42Speaker 1: all of them are playing the game.
- 36:43Speaker 3: You know that, oh you know it?
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it makes it fun and well, the other thing
- 36:48Speaker 1: I'll say that I missed from the game and appreciate it.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Being back like this is how you get to know
- 36:53Speaker 1: the roster like it really is not. I mean not
- 36:55Speaker 1: just Nebraska, but any any team you play with. You
- 36:58Speaker 1: get to know names of some of the guys and
- 37:01Speaker 1: that like you especially your second and third stringers or
- 37:04Speaker 1: guys for like two or three years down the road.
- 37:06Speaker 1: In Dynasty Mode, you get to know the names of them. Now,
- 37:10Speaker 1: not everybody's in the game. Carter Nelson's not in there,
- 37:13Speaker 1: Gabe Urban's not in there. There's a couple of guys
- 37:15Speaker 1: like that. But for the most part, that's how you
- 37:17Speaker 1: get to know the team more so than just pulling
- 37:19Speaker 1: up the depth chart on Google and reading through it.
- 37:22Speaker 1: You need to know their style, what they kind of
- 37:24Speaker 1: are built like, So appreciate all of that stuff. Again
- 37:27Speaker 1: with the game and being.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Back out, I almost bought a PlayStation five.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Still should You still should?
- 37:36Speaker 6: Oh?
- 37:36Speaker 2: I did. That's the only reason why I bought it.
- 37:39Speaker 3: They're so expensive.
- 37:41Speaker 1: You still should? You got you got the big time,
- 37:43Speaker 1: big boy job making enough money you can justify.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I found mine from Marketplace to Trail Park and Lincoln.
