- 0:15Speaker 1: Larger Catechism by the Westminster Assembly. Having seen what the
- 0:20Speaker 1: scriptures principally teach us to believe concerning God, it follows
- 0:24Speaker 1: to consider what they require as the duty of man.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Question ninety one, What is the duty which God requireth
- 0:32Speaker 1: of man? Answer? The duty which God requireth of man
- 0:37Speaker 1: is obedience to His revealed will. Question ninety two. What
- 0:42Speaker 1: did God first reveal unto man as the rule of
- 0:45Speaker 1: his obedience? Answer? The rule of obedience revealed to Adam
- 0:50Speaker 1: in the estate of innocence and to all mankind in him,
- 0:54Speaker 1: besides a special command not to eat of the fruit
- 0:57Speaker 1: of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Was the moral law? Question ninety three, What is the
- 1:04Speaker 1: moral law? Answer? The moral law is the declaration of
- 1:09Speaker 1: the will of God to mankind, directing and binding everyone
- 1:13Speaker 1: to personal, perfect and perpetual conformity and obedience thereunto in
- 1:18Speaker 1: the frame and disposition of the whole man, soul and body,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and in performance of all those duties of holiness and
- 1:25Speaker 1: righteousness which he oweth to God and man, promising life
- 1:30Speaker 1: upon the fulfilling and threatening death upon the breach of it.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Question ninety four is there any use of the moral
- 1:39Speaker 1: law since the Fall? Answer? Although no man since the
- 1:44Speaker 1: fall can attain to righteousness and life by the moral law,
- 1:48Speaker 1: yet there is great use thereof, as well common to
- 1:51Speaker 1: all men, as peculiar, either to the unregenerate or the regenerate.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Question ninety five, of what use is the moral law
- 2:00Speaker 1: to all men? Answer? The moral law is of use
- 2:05Speaker 1: to all men to inform them of the holy nature
- 2:08Speaker 1: and will of God, and of their duty binding them
- 2:11Speaker 1: to walk accordingly, to convince them of their disability to
- 2:15Speaker 1: keep it, and of the sinful pollution of their nature,
- 2:18Speaker 1: hearts and lives, to humble them in the sense of
- 2:21Speaker 1: their sin and misery, and thereby help them to a
- 2:25Speaker 1: clearer sight of the need they have of Christ and
- 2:28Speaker 1: of the perfection of His obedience. Question ninety six, What
- 2:34Speaker 1: particular use is there of the moral law to unregenerate men? Answer?
- 2:40Speaker 1: The moral law is of use to unregenerate men to
- 2:43Speaker 1: awaken their consciences, to flee from the wrath to come
- 2:46Speaker 1: and to drive them to Christ, or upon the continuance
- 2:50Speaker 1: in the estate and way of sin, to leave them
- 2:53Speaker 1: inexcusable and under the curse thereof. Question ninety seven, What
- 2:59Speaker 1: special uses there of the moral law to the regenerate? Answer?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Although they that are regenerate and believe in Christ be
- 3:08Speaker 1: delivered from the moral law as a covenant of works,
- 3:11Speaker 1: so as thereby they are neither justified nor condemned. Yet,
- 3:15Speaker 1: besides the general uses thereof common to them with all men,
- 3:19Speaker 1: it is of special use to show them how much
- 3:22Speaker 1: they are bound to Christ, for his fulfilling it and
- 3:25Speaker 1: enduring the curse thereof in their stead, and for their good,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and thereby to provoke them to more thankfulness, and to
- 3:33Speaker 1: express the same in their greater care to conform themselves
- 3:36Speaker 1: thereunto as the rule of their obedience. Question ninety eight,
- 3:42Speaker 1: Where is the moral law summarily comprehended? Answer? The moral
- 3:48Speaker 1: law is summarily comprehended in the ten Commandments, which were
- 3:52Speaker 1: delivered by the Voice of God upon Mount Sinai, and
- 3:55Speaker 1: written by him in two tables of Stone, and are
- 3:59Speaker 1: recorded in the twin tieth chapter of Exodus. The first
- 4:02Speaker 1: four commandments containing our duty to God and the other
- 4:06Speaker 1: six our duty to man. Question ninety nine, What rules
- 4:11Speaker 1: are to be observed for the right understanding of the
- 4:14Speaker 1: ten Commandments? Answer? For the right understanding of the ten commandments,
- 4:20Speaker 1: these rules are to be observed. One that the law
- 4:23Speaker 1: is perfect and bindeth everyone to full conformity in the
- 4:27Speaker 1: whole man, unto the righteousness thereof, and unto entire obedience forever,
- 4:33Speaker 1: so as to require the utmost perfection of every duty,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and to forbid the least degree of every sin. Two
- 4:40Speaker 1: that it is spiritual, and so reacheth the understanding will
- 4:44Speaker 1: affections and all other powers of the soul, as well
- 4:48Speaker 1: as words, works, and gestures. Three That one and the
- 4:53Speaker 1: same thing in divers respects is required or forbidden in
- 4:57Speaker 1: several commandments. That as where a duty is commanded, the
- 5:03Speaker 1: contrary sin is forbidden, and where a sin is forbidden,
- 5:07Speaker 1: the contrary duty is commanded. So where a promise is annexed,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the contrary threatening is included, and where a threatening is annexed,
- 5:17Speaker 1: the contrary promise is included. Five That what God forbids
- 5:22Speaker 1: is at no time to be done. What He commands
- 5:25Speaker 1: is always our duty. And yet every particular duty is
- 5:29Speaker 1: not to be done at all times. Six That under
- 5:33Speaker 1: one sin or duty, all the same kind are forbidden
- 5:36Speaker 1: or commanded, together with all the causes, means, occasions, and
- 5:41Speaker 1: appearances thereof, and provocations thereon. Two. Seven That what is
- 5:46Speaker 1: forbidden or commanded to ourselves, we are bound, according to
- 5:50Speaker 1: our places to endeavor, that it may be avoided or
- 5:53Speaker 1: performed by others according to the duty of their places.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Eight That in what is com demanded to others, we
- 6:01Speaker 1: are bound, according to our places and callings, to be
- 6:04Speaker 1: helpful to them, and to take heed of partaking with
- 6:08Speaker 1: others in what is forbidden them. Question one hundred What
- 6:13Speaker 1: special things are we to consider in the Ten Commandments? Answer?
- 6:18Speaker 1: We are to consider in the Ten Commandments the preface,
- 6:22Speaker 1: the substance of the commandments themselves, and several reasons annexed
- 6:26Speaker 1: to some of them, the more to enforce them. Question
- 6:31Speaker 1: one hundred one, What is the preface to the Ten Commandments? Answer?
- 6:36Speaker 1: The preface to the Ten Commandments is contained in these words,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee
- 6:42Speaker 1: out of the land of Egypt, out of the house
- 6:45Speaker 1: of bondage, wherein God manifesteth his sovereignty, as being Jehovah,
- 6:50Speaker 1: the eternal, immutable and almighty God, having his being in
- 6:54Speaker 1: and of himself, and giving being to all his words
- 6:58Speaker 1: and works, And that he is a god in covenant,
- 7:01Speaker 1: as with Israel of old, so with all his people,
- 7:05Speaker 1: who as he brought them out of their bondage in Egypt,
- 7:08Speaker 1: so he delivereth us from our spiritual thraldom, And that

- 8:26Speaker 1: and thanks, and yielding all obedience and submission to him,

- 11:07Speaker 1: notice of and is much displeased with the sin of
- 11:10Speaker 1: having any other God. That so it may be an
- 11:13Speaker 1: argument to dissuade from it and to aggravate it as
- 11:16Speaker 1: a most imprudent provocation, as also to persuade us to

- 11:51Speaker 1: visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto

- 14:34Speaker 1: them that love me and keep My commandments, are, besides
- 14:38Speaker 1: God's sovereignty over us and propriety in us, his fervent

- 17:44Speaker 1: guiltless that taketh his name in vain are, because he
- 17:48Speaker 1: is the Lord and our God. Therefore his name is
- 17:52Speaker 1: not to be profaned or any way abused by us,
- 17:56Speaker 1: especially because he will be so far from acquitting and
- 17:59Speaker 1: sparing the transgressors of this commandment as that he will
- 18:02Speaker 1: not suffer them to escape his righteous judgment, albeit many
- 18:06Speaker 1: such escape the censures and punishments of men. Question one
- 18:12Speaker 1: hundred fifteen, which is the fourth commandment? Answer? The fourth
- 18:17Speaker 1: commandment is remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work.

- 18:27Speaker 1: thy God. In it thou shalt not do any work
- 18:31Speaker 1: thou nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor
- 18:35Speaker 1: thy maid servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that
- 18:39Speaker 1: is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord
- 18:42Speaker 1: made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in
- 18:45Speaker 1: them is, and rested the seventh day. Wherefore the Lord
- 18:49Speaker 1: blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it. Question one hundred sixteen.
- 18:55Speaker 1: What is required in the fourth commandment? Answer? The fourth
- 19:00Speaker 1: Commandment requireth of all men the sanctifying or keeping wholly
- 19:04Speaker 1: to God such set times as he hath appointed in
- 19:08Speaker 1: his word expressly one whole day in seventh, which was
- 19:12Speaker 1: the seventh from the beginning of the world to the
- 19:14Speaker 1: resurrection of Christ, and the first day of the week
- 19:17Speaker 1: ever since, and so to continue to the end of
- 19:20Speaker 1: the world, which is the Christian Sabbath. And in the
- 19:23Speaker 1: New Testament called the Lord's Day question one hundred seventeen,
- 19:29Speaker 1: how is the Sabbath or the Lord's Day to be sanctified? Answer?
- 19:35Speaker 1: The Sabbath or Lord's Day is to be sanctified by
- 19:37Speaker 1: in wholly resting all the day, not only from such
- 19:41Speaker 1: works as are at all times sinful, but even from
- 19:44Speaker 1: such worldly employments and recreations as are on other days lawful,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and making it our delight to spend the whole time
- 19:52Speaker 1: except so much of it as is to be taken
- 19:55Speaker 1: up in works of necessity and mercy, in the public
- 19:58Speaker 1: and private exercises of God's worship. And to that end
- 20:02Speaker 1: we are to prepare our hearts, and with such foresight, diligence,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and moderation, to dispose and seasonably dispatch our worldly business,
- 20:11Speaker 1: that we may be the more free and fit for
- 20:14Speaker 1: the duties of that day. Question one hundred eighteen Why
- 20:19Speaker 1: is the charge of keeping the Sabbath more specially directed
- 20:22Speaker 1: to governors of families and other superiors? Answer? The charge
- 20:28Speaker 1: of keeping the Sabbath is more specially directed to governors
- 20:31Speaker 1: of families and other superiors, because they are bound not
- 20:35Speaker 1: only to keep it themselves, but to see that it
- 20:37Speaker 1: be observed by all those that are under their charge,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and because they are prone, oft times to hinder them
- 20:44Speaker 1: by employments of their own. Question one hundred nineteen. What
- 20:49Speaker 1: are the sins forbidden in the Fourth Commandment? Answer? The
- 20:54Speaker 1: sins forbidden in the Fourth Commandment are all omissions of
- 20:59Speaker 1: the duties required, all careless, negligent, and unprofitable performing of them,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and being weary of them, all profaning the day by
- 21:08Speaker 1: idleness and doing that which is in itself sinful, and
- 21:12Speaker 1: by all needless works, words and thoughts about our worldly
- 21:16Speaker 1: employments and recreations. Question one hundred twenty. What are the
- 21:22Speaker 1: reasons annexed to the Fourth Commandment? The more to enforce it? Answer?
- 21:28Speaker 1: The reasons annexed to the Fourth Commandment, the more to
- 21:31Speaker 1: enforce it are taken from the equity of it. God
- 21:34Speaker 1: allowing us six days of seven for our own affairs,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and reserving but one for himself. In these words, six days,
- 21:42Speaker 1: shalt thou labor and do all thy work from God's
- 21:46Speaker 1: challenging a special propriety in that day. The seventh day
- 21:49Speaker 1: is the Sabbath of the Lord, thy God. From the
- 21:52Speaker 1: example of God, who in six days made heaven and earth,
- 21:57Speaker 1: the sea, and all that in them is and rest
- 22:00Speaker 1: did the seventh day, and from that blessing which God
- 22:03Speaker 1: put upon that day, not only in sanctifying it to
- 22:06Speaker 1: be a day for his service, but in ordaining it
- 22:09Speaker 1: to be a means of blessing to us in our
- 22:12Speaker 1: sanctifying it. Wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and
- 22:16Speaker 1: hallowed it. Question one hundred twenty one. Why is the
- 22:21Speaker 1: word remember set in the beginning of the Fourth Commandment? Answer?
- 22:27Speaker 1: The word remember is set in the beginning of the
- 22:29Speaker 1: Fourth Commandment partly because of the great benefit of remembering it,
- 22:34Speaker 1: we being thereby helped in our preparation to keep it,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and in keeping it better to keep all the rest
- 22:40Speaker 1: of the commandments, and to continue a thankful remembrance of
- 22:44Speaker 1: the two great benefits of creation and redemption, which contain
- 22:48Speaker 1: a short abridgment of religion, and partly because we are
- 22:52Speaker 1: very ready to forget it, for that there is less
- 22:55Speaker 1: light of nature for it. And yet it restraineth our
- 22:58Speaker 1: natural liberty in things. At other times lawful that it cometh,
- 23:03Speaker 1: but once in seven days, and many worldly businesses come between,
