- 0:07On October 9th, 1967, the Boston Red Sox faced the St. Louis Cardinals at Bush Stadium for Game 5 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:15The Cardinals led the best of seven series three games to one, and this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 5 featuring announcers Pee Wee Reese and Ken Coleman.
- 0:25Good afternoon baseball fans. This is Ken Coleman along with Pee Wee Reese welcoming you to Bush Memorial Stadium and the 1967 World Series.
- 0:36Brought to you by Salem menthol cigarettes. You'll find Salem refreshes your taste.
- 0:43By B.F. Goodrich, the straight talk tire people. By Chrysler Corporation, makers of Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Imperial, and Dodge trucks.
- 0:55And by the new Gillette super stainless steel blade, the spoiler.
- 1:01Welcome to the fifth game of the 1967 World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals have an edge of three games to one.
- 1:10And the forecast this morning was again for cloudy, cool weather, but the weatherman was thrown another curveball today as it turned out to be a very sunny and nice day.
- 1:21Well Pee Wee Reese, you've been through World Series competition before.
- 1:26You know the task that's facing the Boston Red Sox today and the pressure that they must feel knowing that they have got to win all the rest of the way in order to become the champions.
- 1:38Well the Cardinals have a chance to finish it up at home. So what is your reaction to this afternoon's game?
- 1:45Well Ken, after talking to both the Cardinals and the Red Sox, the Cardinals definitely have that old momentum as we say.
- 1:52They think they're going to finish it here today. The Red Sox and the American League, no one gave a chance to win it.
- 1:58They were 100 to 1 odds. They came on to win it. No one thought they could win that game on Saturday and Sunday up in Boston when they played the Minnesota Twins.
- 2:06They won that. Being down three games to one in the World Series history, only three other teams have come back to win the series.
- 2:15If anyone can do it, Ken, I guess the Boston Red Sox can do it.
- 2:20Well we'll see what happens and the burden will fall on the broad shoulders of a young man warming up down in the left field corner, Jim Lomborgue, who will be opposed by Cardinal left-hander Steve Carlton.
- 2:32And we'll tell you more about those young men in just a moment, but first we would like to mention that this broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball.
- 2:43Solely for the entertainment of our listening audience and any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the express consent of the Commissioner of Baseball is prohibited.
- 2:56Jim Lomborgue will pitch for the Boston Red Sox in today's game, which is the 375th game in World Series history.
- 3:06American League teams have won 205 games. National League teams have won 166 games and three have ended in tie scores.
- 3:15This is the 64th World Series and the American League teams have a 38-25 edge, but National League teams have won the series eight times in the last 13 years.
- 3:28The Cardinals have a 7-3 record in series play and have won more series than any major league team except the Yankees, who have won 20 and lost 9.
- 3:38The Red Sox have won five series and lost one. The Red Sox percentage in series play of 833 is the best in the majors among clubs that have been in more than one.
- 3:50The only Red Sox loss in the series was in 1946, two St. Louis, four games to three in the last series the Red Sox were in.
- 4:00Now down in the right field corner is Steve Carlton warming up. He was 14 and 9 this year, 17 and 12 lifetime, 6'4 inches tall, 195 pounds, 22 years old,
- 4:14born in Miami, Florida and now resides in North Miami. A graduate of North Miami High School in 1963, he attended Miami-Dade Junior College majoring in business administration.
- 4:28He pitched in 15 games for the Cardinals in 65 with no decisions. He was carried by the club all year, pitching only 25 innings.
- 4:37He was 3-3 in the last two months of 1966, but this has been another year and another story.
- 4:45He led the Cardinals staff in starts with 28 and in strikeouts with 168 this past season.
- 4:53He won only three games and lost four here in St. Louis compared to an 11-5 record on the road.
- 5:01His lifetime National League record is 4-7 at home, 13-5 away. He's a strikeout specialist and in one game this year, on September 20th,
- 5:11he struck out 16 men in eight innings at Philadelphia, the best strikeout performance by a National League pitcher in 1967 in a game, incidentally, which he lost 3-1.
- 5:23Now Jim Lomborg won 22 games for the Boston Red Sox this year. He was 13-4 on the road and 9-5 at home.
- 5:33He led the American League in strikeouts with 245, the second best strikeout total in the history of the Red Sox, topped only by Joe Woods, 258 in 1912.
- 5:47He won the second game of the World Series 5-0. Now the Boston Red Sox are being introduced, and as they are going out on the field,
- 5:56we'll give you their lineup, which is changed today with the left-hander Carlton going for St. Louis.
- 6:02Joe Foy is the leadoff man playing third base. Mike Andrews will be at second base.
- 6:09Carl Yastremski in left field. Ken Harrelson batting fourth and playing in right field.
- 6:18George Scott will be at first base. Reggie Smith is in center field.
- 6:26Rico Petrocelli at shortstop. The catcher Elston Howard and the pitcher Jim Lomborg.
- 6:34He tied, Lomborg did, Mike McCormick, who is 22-10, and Earl Wilson, 22-11, for the Major League lead in victories this season.
- 6:47Now for the St. Louis Cardinals. The lineup remains the same. Lou Brock, who has been a great star in this World Series, will lead off playing in left field.
- 6:59Kurt Flood is in center field, batting second. Roger Maris will be in right field, batting third.
- 7:07Orlando Cepeda will be at first base in the cleanup spot on the order. The catcher is Tim McCarver, batting fifth.
- 7:16Mike Shannon will play third base. William Javier, who has been a stick out both ways in the field and at the plate, will be at second.
- 7:27Dal Maxville is the shortstop. And on the mound, left-hander Steve Carlton.
- 7:35So there are the lineups for this afternoon's game.
- 7:39Brett Shandimst has just been announced as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, and incidentally his wife, Mary Shandimst, will sing the national anthem shortly when it comes up.
- 7:52Now to the umpires for this fifth game of the World Series.
- 7:57Working the plate will be Ed Runge of the American League, who will be in the World Series for the third time.
- 8:04The only rookie umpire in the World Series is Paul Pryor of the National League, who will be the umpire at first base.
- 8:12John Stevens of the American League is at second, appearing in his fourth World Series.
- 8:18Al Barlich, the senior umpire on the field, will be at third base from the National League. This is his seventh World Series.
- 8:27Down in the left field corner will be Frank Humon of the American League, appearing in the World Series for the third time.
- 8:34And down the right field line will be Augie Donatelli, appearing in his fourth World Series.
- 8:48This could be the last game of the World Series, or if it is not, these teams will fly out of here tonight, and the series would resume in Boston on Wednesday.
- 9:00Tomorrow is an off day. That is, if Boston can pull it out.
- 9:06And as Pee Wee Reese mentioned, the Red Sox have been the kind of club who this year have won the games they have had to win.
- 9:14There are many old clichés about World Series competition, such as the point of no return and there is no tomorrow.
- 9:24They are old, they are clichés, but they are true when it comes down to the Red Sox situation here this afternoon.
- 9:33And again, we have really been blessed with a beautiful day after the forecast had been for very cloudy weather.
- 9:41Now the fans are rising and Mrs. Brett Schoendienst will sing the national anthem.
- 9:49Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
- 10:18Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
- 10:41And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
- 11:04Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- 11:34The national anthem sung by Mrs. Brett Schoendienst here in St. Louis.
- 11:50And we'll be back with more pregame color in just a moment.
- 12:01I've done it again. Done what again? Come out without cigarettes. Well here, try one of mine. Oh, that's okay.
- 12:09Here, try one of mine. Have a Salem.
- 12:14Salem is the mental cigarette that refreshes your taste for you. Salem is the mental cigarette all of America's turning to.
- 12:29And you buy a mental cigarette, don't take anything but the best. Salem is the mental cigarette, the one brand that outsells all the rest.
- 12:45Here's one of mine.
- 12:59Today's NBC broadcast being sent coast to coast and to 50 countries around the world, including our servicemen in Vietnam. And to remind you again of the dimensions of Bush Memorial Stadium,
- 13:16330 feet down the lines in left and right field, 386 to the power alley in left and also to right field, and 414 feet to straightaway center field.
- 13:31The Panpires, after the conference at home play, have gone out to their respective spots. Steve Carlton has finished his warm-up throws, and Jim Lomborgue is still throwing down in the corner in left field.
- 13:46Now, a former Cardinal manager and, as a matter of fact, a former Boston Braves manager, so there's a touch for both cities here, Billy Southworth throws out the first ball.
- 14:00Frankie Frisch, a former Cardinal flash, and now a New Englander living in Rhode Island threw out the first ball yesterday.
- 14:11Billy Southworth tossing it out to catcher Tim McArthur, and the flash bulbs are popping around down there, and the Cardinals are now taking the field.
- 14:24So here we go, game five coming up, and we'll pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 14:36WGYWGF, that's connected.
- 14:39Saratoga, the authentic vichy behind the yellow label, the only mix that we know of that people built a city just to be near.
- 14:49Steve Carlton has taken them on, starting to take his warm-up throws, and it's a real pleasure once more to turn this microphone over to a great gentleman and a former World Surrey star in his own right, Pee-wee Reese.
- 15:05Thank you again, yes sir. Defensively for the St. Louis Cardinals will be Orlando Cepeda at first base, Javier at second base, Maxwell at shortstop, at third base, Mike Shannon in left field, Lou Brock in center field, Kurt Flood in right field, Roger Mares, the catcher Tim McArthur, and the big pitcher Steve Carlton.
- 15:29Talking about Steve Carlton, here is a big, classy, stylish-looking left hand.
- 15:36Every move of picture has a good fastball, good curveball, and a changeup. No tricky pitches, but he can bring it pretty hard.
- 15:45The umpires, behind home plate, Ed Runge at first base, Paul Pryor at second base, Johnny Stevens at third base, Al Barley out on the left field line, Frank Umont in right field line, that's Augie Donatelli, the first hitter leading off with the Red Sox here.
- 16:04This is the first time he's started a game in this series. It'll be Joe Foy playing third base. The first pitch by Steve Carlton, a curveball, long inside, ball one.
- 16:15The last chance for the Red Sox, as Ken told you, they must win this one. And they've won the big ones all year. Let's see what will happen. Carlton's next pitch, a good fastball, swung on, no contact, strike one, one ball and one strike on Joe Foy.
- 16:30He's been up in this series three times, has not had a hit, all as a pinch hitter. During the season, he hit 16 home runs, good power, cones, fastball, swung on, foul straight back, strike two, one ball and two strikes.
- 16:45They played Joe Foy deep and fairly straight away. This cardinal outfield, they can move. Roger Maris is not a bad outfielder. He made a great play yesterday. The curveball, swung on, and foul off the left.
- 17:04One ball and two strikes. We're in the top half of the first inning, the first hitter in the fifth game of the World Series. The Red Sox down three games to one. Will they go back to Boston?
- 17:18Well, it won't be long until we'll find out. One ball, two strikes. Here is the pitch by Carlton. Fastball inside, makes a count two and two.
- 17:31Carlton is not a herky-jerky pitcher. He kicks that leg up, a nice, soft follow through, foul ball right straight back before it.
- 17:45The Red Shandies talking about Carlton after they had sensed the pen at the Cardinals. Carlton kept saying, I hope that I get a chance to pitch in this series. Kept telling Billy Muppet that, the pitching coach for the Cardinals.
- 18:02Here is the pitch by Carlton. He just got a piece of it. Joe Poise still alive as McCarver could not hold on to that foul tip. And Red Shandies talking about Carlton said, there's a fella that should have a chance to pitch in the series.
- 18:19Because he helped us so much during the season for us to win this pennant. Well, here he is, two balls and two strikes to pitch. Another foul tip. Just got a piece of it before. He's hanging tough.
- 18:33A beautiful day in Busch Stadium here in St. Louis. And Ken, it's been remarkable weather.
- 18:43Well, we've been very fortunate. I'm happy the weatherman hasn't been as accurate as some of his forecasts.
- 18:50Here's the pitch. He's stuck it out, a good fastball high inside. So the first man that Carlton faces, he strikes him out.
- 19:01Billy, as I mentioned before, he led the staff in strikeouts with 168. And his last win was 4-0 at Cincinnati on September 15th. And that was his second shutout in a row.
- 19:16Can you also mention something else, which is remarkable? He got beat 3-1 in a ball game over to Philadelphia. He struck out 16 men in that game. Inside, through Mike Andrews.
- 19:29Mike Andrews playing second base today. The first game he started, he had a pinch hit. Single, he's one for two in the series. Steve Carlton, the big kick. Here's the pitch. Inside, one ball and one strike.
- 19:48Mike Andrews chokes up on that bat. Carlton, into the windup. Here's the pitch. A curveball, swung on and fouled out in front of the plate. McHarvard chasing the ball down.
- 20:02So far, the only thing that they were concerned about, Carlton's control, looks to me like it's pretty good.
- 20:12He's been right around that plate so far today. This fellow at the plate, Mike Andrews, did a great job for Dick Williams this year.
- 20:19He played for him last year at Toronto, and he and Reggie Smith were the two rookies who solidified the club.
- 20:26A one-and-two pitch is now back for Mike Andrews. Well, I had the pleasure of watching this young fellow play quite a few games.
- 20:35Mike Andrews at second base, and he should be around for a long time. And he's got a great fellow to help him out, coaching for the Red Sox and Bobby Doerr.
- 20:47Here's the pitch for Carlton, inside and low. Mixed account two-and-two. One away when the top half of the first inning. Red Sox and the Cardinals here at Bush City, and St. Louis.
- 20:59The fifth game of the World Series. The Cardinals lead three games to one. It's a must for the Red Sox. Carl kicks that leg.
- 21:08Here's the pitch. Curveball, a little bit too low. It's a full count now. Three-and-two.
- 21:17We have three new players in the Red Sox lineup today. At least since the first game, Joe Foie starting at third base.
- 21:25Mike Andrews at second base. Here's the pitch. Little lazy looper. Javier at second base should have no trouble with it underneath it and takes it for out number two.
- 21:34Foie at third. Mike Andrews at second. And there's starting Ken Harrelson in right field, who opened up the series in Boston. Hasn't played since.
- 21:44Trying to get a little right-handed tire in there. Carl Gostemsky is the hitter. He's batting third in the lineup. Gets a nice round of applause from the St. Louis fans.
- 21:59Carl in the series. Five for fifteen. Has four runs batted in. Curveball, low and outside. Ball one.
- 22:07With Reggie Smith as switch hitter, Carl will be the only bona fide left-handed batter in this lineup facing the South Park Carlton.
- 22:15Best ball on outside. Ball two. And as a rule, left-handers that not bother Jostemsky.
- 22:22Not this year. He was much tougher hanging in there with him all season long.
- 22:30The pitch is outside. Ball three. And you can see Carl has a lot of respect for Carl Gostemsky. He has two home runs in the series.
- 22:43The windup. The pitch. Low and inside. Ball four.
- 22:51So now then Carlton has a strikeout, a pop-up and a walk. It's two away. And that brings up the right-fielder, Ken Harrelson. In the first game he went 0 for 3.
- 23:02Harrelson has good power. He's the fellow that came over to Kansas City. Came over from Kansas City to Boston.
- 23:11When he first came with Boston, two or three big hits. Carl checks the runner at first base to Stripsy. Here is a pitch. Grounder out to the shortstop.
- 23:21Maxwell puts it all over to Javier forcing out to Stripsy. And that's all for Harrelson and that's all for the Red Sox here in the top half of the first inning.
- 23:28So the score here at First City and the Red Sox nothing and the Cardinals coming the back.
- 23:36Well most of us enjoy watching the strategy of these World Series managers. When one of them sends up a left-handed pinch hitter, the others just like the counter by waving a southpaw to the mound.
- 23:46For every move there's a counter move, right? Well you know it won't be long now before winter makes its move and all of us are going to have to meet it.
- 23:55And when ice and snow cover the road, the safest counter move you can make is B.F. Goodridge's Trailmakers Silver Town Snow Tars.
- 24:03The Trailmakers give your car real digging power. The deep biting edges dig in to keep you going.
- 24:09The four-ply nylon card construction means many winters of safe driving miles.
- 24:14B.F.G. Trailmakers Snow Tars can be yours for no money down. And installation? It's free.
- 24:21If you need extra traction, you can get your Trailmakers with steel safety studs. So don't be out-maneuvered by snow and ice.
- 24:28Stay on top of winter with Trailmakers Silver Towns from your B.F. Goodridge store, our dealer.
- 24:35Out on the mound, Jim Lornborg is taking his warm-up throws as we get ready for the last half of the first inning.
- 24:43The Red Sox were scoreless in the top of the first. Lornborg, six-foot-five inches tall, 200 pounds, they call him, Gentlemen Jim.
- 24:53This is the fifth World Series game, and the Cardinals have used the same batting order in each one.
- 25:00And in 1964, the Cardinals used the same eight starters in each of the seven games, although the order was not the same in every game.
- 25:11Lornborg has completed his warm-up throws and will pitch first to LeBron. And once again, here is Harold B. Wee Reece.
- 25:20Okay, Ken. As you can hear, Lou Brock, a Danny Little left-fielder for the Cardinals, gets a nice round of applause by the fans, and he has deserved it.
- 25:33In the series, he has scored eight runs, eight for 16. Lornborg's first pitch to Lou Brock.
- 25:41Pass ball, just got that outside corner, strike one. And what a game has Lornborg pitched up in Boston.
- 25:48Pretty hard to improve on that one. He just gave up one hit to Javier. Let's see what he can do today.
- 25:56Here is the pitch by Lornborg. Ball hit out into right center, that ball is hit hard. Harrelson going back.
- 26:01He won hands the ball, a nice running play by the right fielder, Ken Harrelson, out in the right center.
- 26:09Lou Brock hit that ball hard. But Harrelson, playing Brock deep, made a fine running play.
- 26:19So it's one away. Harrelson hard, out to talk to his pitcher, Lornborg.
- 26:26And that brings up Kurt Flood. He's three for 16.
- 26:35The thing that the Red Sox have to do is to try to keep these two fellows off of those sacks.
- 26:40Kurt Flood tries to punt one down at third baseline. Boy, he was waiting for him. He was in a couple of steps.
- 26:48One strike on Kurt Flood. Lornborg, that familiar stance of his, kicks that leg. Here is a pitch.
- 26:56Curve ball way outside, ball one. One ball and one strike on Flood.
- 27:00On the bottom half, the first inning here at Push to Demon St. Louis, the fifth game of the World Series.
- 27:05Ken Coleman and I'm Pee Wee Reese bringing you today's game. Certainly hope that you'll enjoy it.
- 27:12Jim Lornborg, here is the pitch. Curve ball. Little low on outside, ball two. Two balls and one strike on Flood.
- 27:19Coaching at third base, Joel Schultz for the Cardinals. At first base, Dick Sissler.
- 27:26Lornborg shakes his head. He doesn't want that one. Tells him how it moves outside. Here is the pitch.
- 27:31A high hopper to Floyd, third base. He takes it over to George Scott and that's all for Kurt Flood.
- 27:36So it's two down here in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 27:40Pee Wee, we have an interesting sideline on World Series. As we've said, all of the executives appear.
- 27:47And whether this means anything or not remains to be seen. But George Selkirk, the general manager of Washington,
- 27:54has given Bing Devine of the Mets permission to speak to your old teammate, Gil Hodges.
- 28:00The first pitch by Lornborg to Roger Maris is outside. Roger acted like he wanted to.
- 28:06But went down at third baseline. Well, there's been a lot of talk about Hodges going to the Mets.
- 28:11Ken, if that's what he wants to do, the best of luck to him. He's done a good job over at Warson.
- 28:18Roger Maris hits a grounder to George Scott. Will he take it himself? Yes, sir. He waved Lornborg away.
- 28:23Steps on the bag. That's all for Roger Maris and that's all for the Cardinals here.
- 28:26In the bottom half of the first thing. So the score here at Busch Stadium after one inning at play,
- 28:30the Red Sox nothing and the Cardinals nothing.
- 28:33Hello, this is Petula Clark for Plymouth 68.
- 28:37And the beat goes on. Yes, the beat goes on.
- 28:43Last year, over a quarter million owners of other low-priced cars were won over to Plymouth.
- 28:49It started a movement, a momentum, a beat, and the beat goes on.
- 28:56Styles have come and surely styles will go.
- 29:02But Plymouth's beauty is not a bad, you know.
- 29:08Beauty's got what you've been looking for.
- 29:14It delivers looks and so much more.
- 29:19And the beat goes on. Yes, the beat goes on.
- 29:25But Plymouth, when you overbeat, goes on.
- 29:33And now, three important words from your nearby Plymouth dealer.
- 29:38Enjoy the game.
- 29:45Memorial Stadium as we move into the second inning of play.
- 29:48George Scott leads off against Steve Carlton and once again here's Peewee Reese.
- 29:54Big George Scott, the first baseman, ready to take Steve Carlton's first pitch.
- 29:58It's in the low and inside, a curve ball, ball one.
- 30:01George Scott, he's four for 15 in the series, has good power, has 19 home runs.
- 30:10You're seeing this fastballed in there for call strike one.
- 30:13Over on the television side, Peewee, Kurt Gotti had a telegram from Greenville, Mississippi.
- 30:18They're going to have a George Scott day down there after the year's over.
- 30:23A curve ball in there, a strike two, one ball and two strikes on George Scott.
- 30:29Steve Carlton does not take too much time to kick the pitch.
- 30:34Little tap foul that the umpire Ed Runge came up with.
- 30:39Talking about Ed Runge, Ken, these umpires, as usual, have done a terrific job.
- 30:44Tremendous job in this World Series.
- 30:46I don't think there's been one real squabble all the way through.
- 30:51George Scott, he struck him out.
- 30:54The ball gets away from McArthur.
- 30:55McArthur is going back for the ball down to first base.
- 30:58George Scott.
- 31:07That'd be a wild pitch by Carlton and a strikeout.
- 31:13Clark Carlton.
- 31:14That was a sharp breaking curve ball that Scott was fooled on, but he went around.
- 31:24The ball got by McArthur and Scott is down on it first base, so it's a break here for the Boston Red Sox.
- 31:31And that brings up Reggie Smith.
- 31:35Carlton looks over George Scott at first base.
- 31:38The kick, here's the pitch.
- 31:39Reggie Smith batting right-handed against Steve Carlton, a left-handed pitcher.
- 31:44You know, there's an old saying, you can't steal first, but that's about the closest thing to it, I guess, do we?
- 31:52Carlton looks over at Scott.
- 31:53Here's the pitch.
- 31:54Ball hit hard out in the center field.
- 31:55Kurt Flood right back underneath it, and he takes it for out number one.
- 32:00George Scott tags up a first.
- 32:04And here, if there's any doubt about Kurt Flood's arm.
- 32:10Now, that was a tremendous throw in.
- 32:11The ball was hit well, and the Red Sox, like most clubs in that situation, had Scott tagging up,
- 32:17and he blocked toward second and smartly did not go.
- 32:20He would have been had easily.
- 32:22And the Red Sox ballplayers have been very much impressed by Flood throughout this series,
- 32:27with his great speed and defensive ability in that outfield.
- 32:31By the way, George Scott's still on the first base.
- 32:34Petrosili hitter.
- 32:36Kurt Ball tried to check his swing, Petrosili did.
- 32:38It's in there for call, strike one.
- 32:41Petrosili is a better hitter than his one for Levin in this series.
- 32:49Carol pitched to Petrosili, fouled it straight back, and it's strike two.
- 33:00Someone made a nice play right down in front of his ear.
- 33:040-2 is a count on Petrosili.
- 33:06There's no score in this ballgame.
- 33:08We're in the top half, the second inning.
- 33:11No hits in the ballgame.
- 33:14Call.
- 33:15Fastball, high and outside, McCarver makes a flop.
- 33:18That at first base as George Scott hustles back in there.
- 33:21One ball and two strikes.
- 33:23It's one away.
- 33:27Call.
- 33:28Looking down at McCarver.
- 33:30Doesn't want that pitch.
- 33:31He steps off the rubber.
- 33:32George Scott taking a short lead at first base.
- 33:37Scott does not have bad speed for a big fella.
- 33:39Here's a pitch, a curveball hit out in the right field.
- 33:41Roger Mares backs up a couple of steps.
- 33:43He's underneath it.
- 33:44Scott back into first base.
- 33:47So it's two away.
- 33:50And that brings up the big catcher, Elston Hart.
- 33:56Hart in the series, one for eight.
- 34:06A great catcher for the Yankees for so many years.
- 34:09Carp, the kick, here's the pitch.
- 34:11McCarver down to first base.
- 34:13The Patey did not make a tag at Scott, he's back in there easily.
- 34:24Carp comes set.
- 34:25Here's the pitch.
- 34:27Fastball too high.
- 34:29Count is two at all.
- 34:30Elston Hart checks with his coach, Popowski.
- 34:33Ed Popowski down at third base coaching for the Red Sox.
- 34:36Coaching at first base.
- 34:38A great second baseman for the Red Sox for so many years.
- 34:41Bobby Doerr.
- 34:42The two and 0 pitch, Elston Hart.
- 34:45Grounder after the shortstop, Maxwell.
- 34:46He's up with his flip-so ball over to Javier.
- 34:48The time, George.
- 34:50Scott, and that's all for the Red Sox for the top half of the second inning.
- 34:53So after one and a half innings of play, the score, the Red Sox nothing,
- 34:57and the Cardinals nothing.
- 34:59Once again, we're happy to present the worst person of the week,
- 35:02and this week's choice is a specialist.
- 35:04You are a legitimate theater pest.
- 35:06Yes, that's right.
- 35:07Could you come up here and explain?
- 35:11Right, you see, it takes real nerve to be a theater pest with live actors
- 35:15and an audience that's paid up to $10 a ticket.
- 35:17Do you always wear shoes with bells on them?
- 35:19Only to the theater.
- 35:20I come in with these just after the curtain rises and rush to my seat.
- 35:24Oh, that's pretty annoying.
- 35:25Right. Then I always bring a crisp Macintosh apple along.
- 35:28I hate to be near you.
- 35:30Oh, you don't have to.
- 35:32When I get a sneezing fit,
- 35:33it can be heard in the balcony.
- 35:37You're a terror.
- 35:38I try.
- 35:39In romantic scenes, I love to make a...
- 35:41...sound.
- 35:44Awful.
- 35:45Now, what's this about you leaving your family defenseless?
- 35:47Yes.
- 35:48You see, my entire family uses Right Guard deodorant,
- 35:50which they love because it's a spray.
- 35:52Well, my family too.
- 35:53Right.
- 35:54Anyhow, they never get to use the Right Guard
- 35:55because I take it to the theater to hiss the villains.
- 35:58Great, huh?
- 36:02This is Ken Coleman along with Pee Wee Reese
- 36:04at Bush Memorial Stadium in the last half of the second inning,
- 36:07and Orlando Cepeda will lead off.
- 36:09The Cardinals win an order in the first inning,
- 36:11although Brock hit the ball very hard,
- 36:14and Arrowson made a fine running catch in Right.
- 36:16Pee Wee?
- 36:18The first pitch by Lombard,
- 36:19Cepeda is in there for call strike one, a fast ball.
- 36:23Cepeda in the series, 2 for 15, has one run batted in.
- 36:29This is his second World Series.
- 36:33Hit 1.58 for the Giants.
- 36:35A swing and a miss, strike 2,
- 36:38when the Giants play in the series of 1962.
- 36:44Here is one of the most feared hitters in the National League,
- 36:48the big right-hander, Orlando Cepeda.
- 36:52Lombard, count of no balls and two strikes.
- 36:55Here is the pitch, fast ball high on inside,
- 36:57one ball and two strikes on Cepeda.
- 36:59Defensively for the Red Sox, George Scott at first,
- 37:02Mike Andrews at second base,
- 37:04Petrocelli at shortstop,
- 37:06Joe Foy at third base,
- 37:07and left field, Yastremski in center field,
- 37:09Reggie Smith right field, Ken Harrelson,
- 37:12and the catcher is Elson Howard.
- 37:14The pitcher is big Jim Lombard.
- 37:15And here is the pitch,
- 37:16her ball, swing and a miss, strike 3.
- 37:22That's the first strikeout
- 37:24by the 22-game winner, Jim Lombard.
- 37:28And he also has a big win in the series here for the Red Sox,
- 37:33the only game that they've won.
- 37:38Tim McCarver in this series, he's 2 for 13.
- 37:44In the 64 series, the last time the Cardinals played,
- 37:49he led with 4.78.
- 37:55See, he hit pretty good in that 64 series.
- 37:58A real fine catcher, one ball, no strike on Tim McCarver.
- 38:02Lombard looking down at Elson Howard.
- 38:06Elson Howard moves inside with a target.
- 38:08That's where it was, a little bit too much inside.
- 38:102-0 to town on Tim McCarver.
- 38:18You can watch Howard.
- 38:19He's the type of catcher that moves in.
- 38:23He moves out.
- 38:24He moves up and he moves down.
- 38:26Some catchers will just hold that target one spot.
- 38:29Howard moves around.
- 38:30Lombard with a count of two balls and no strikes on McCarver.
- 38:33Here's the pitch.
- 38:34A little lazy looper out in the left field.
- 38:36You strip see coming in in fair territory.
- 38:38It's short left underneath it and takes it for out number 2.
- 38:45So Lombard has not had too much trouble.
- 38:53So far in this ball game, we're in the bottom half of the second inning.
- 38:57A fly out for Brock.
- 39:00Kurt Fluck grounded out.
- 39:03And Roger Maris grounded out to George Scott, uninsisted.
- 39:06So he's retired by a minute a row.
- 39:09Lombard against Steve Carlin.
- 39:12They're both big tall lanky boys.
- 39:18Lombard a right-hander and Carlin a left-hander.
- 39:21Mike Shannon, first pitch, he pops it up.
- 39:23Elson Howard flips it, masked away from him.
- 39:25Underneath it and takes it for out number 3.
- 39:29So it's 3 up and 3 down here in the bottom half of the second inning.
- 39:34So the score after two innings of play, it's still the Red Sox nothing and the Cardinals nothing.
- 39:42Hi, honey, I'm home.
- 39:43Hi, I'm upstairs.
- 39:45I'll be down in a minute.
- 39:46Okay.
- 39:47Have a good day.
- 39:48Oh, yeah, horrible.
- 39:50Yeah, lost your job again, huh?
- 39:52Yeah, yeah.
- 39:53I bought some new super king-size Winston cigarettes today.
- 39:56They're on the table in the hall.
- 39:58In the gold and red pack?
- 39:59That's right, great taste.
- 40:01It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long.
- 40:04Mmm, took our son to the dentist today.
- 40:06What happened?
- 40:07Mmm, 20 new cavities.
- 40:08Ouch, wa-wee.
- 40:11Well, I can't find the money.
- 40:13Oh, listen, John, maybe they're in the table on the other side of the living room.
- 40:19What's the table doing over there?
- 40:20What'd you do, rearrange the furniture again?
- 40:22No, John, I always keep the table over there.
- 40:25John?
- 40:26Yeah.
- 40:27Cynthia?
- 40:28Mr. Fredericks, are you in the wrong house again?
- 40:32Tastes good.
- 40:33Tastes good.
- 40:34It should.
- 40:35It should.
- 40:36It's Winston.
- 40:39Ken Coleman, I'm Peewee Reese, bringing you to the fifth game from Busch Stadium.
- 40:43Ken, what is Lombard's real strong pitch?
- 40:46You saw him all year.
- 40:47Well, he has a great sinking fastball, I think is his best pitch, Peewee, but oddly enough,
- 40:53when he's high with a fastball, it will jump some, and that's one of the reasons he became
- 40:58a strikeout specialist this year.
- 41:00Steve Carlin, the first pitch to Lombard, he tries to push one down the first baseline.
- 41:04It's foul, strike one.
- 41:06You know, that brings back a lot of fond memories to Boston fans because in the sixth inning
- 41:11of the final game of the season against the Twins, Lombard led off by dropping a bunt
- 41:17down third, and that started the five-run outburst that won the American League pennant.
- 41:22I remember well.
- 41:23We were doing that game.
- 41:24It kind of upset everything for the Minnesota Twins.
- 41:27Here's a pitch by Carlin to Lombard.
- 41:28A fastball is high and outside, one ball and one strike.
- 41:33Lombard is not a bad hitter for a pitcher.
- 41:36He hangs tough.
- 41:39The one-and-one pitch by Carlin.
- 41:41Here it is.
- 41:42Fastball right down in there for call strike two.
- 41:44No hits, no runs, no errors by the Red Sox.
- 41:46No hits, no runs, no errors by the Cardinals.
- 41:49We're in the top half of the third inning.
- 41:51Lombard against Steve Carlin.
- 41:53Here's the left-hander's pitch.
- 41:55He throws his bat.
- 41:56Is it a foul ball?
- 41:57It's a foul ball.
- 41:59Mike Shannon down at third base.
- 42:01The bat went out toward the pitcher, Steve Carlin.
- 42:04The ball went down third baseline.
- 42:06It was just barely foul.
- 42:08As Mike Shannon would have no trouble with throwing Lombard out.
- 42:11Well, he did that in the first game of the World Series, accidentally,
- 42:15and has done it again today.
- 42:17Making like mini-minosso a little bit.
- 42:20Tony Oliva.
- 42:22Tony Oliva, the Minnesota Twins.
- 42:25I think he leads the league in throwing bats.
- 42:29He's also a pretty good hitter.
- 42:31One ball, two strikes on Jim Lombard.
- 42:34Carlin's pitch.
- 42:35Fastball.
- 42:36Swing on.
- 42:37And he's just strike three.
- 42:44That's the second strikeout by Steve Carlin.
- 42:47And it brings up Joe Foy.
- 42:50Actually, Pee-wee, it's the third.
- 42:52You remember Scott struck out and reached first on that wild pitch.
- 42:56Easy enough that you'd remember that one, I guarantee you.
- 42:59Thank you, Ken.
- 43:01The first pitch to Joe Foy in there for call strike one.
- 43:08Yeah, George Scott struck out.
- 43:10The ball got away from Carver.
- 43:12Base hit by Foy out in the left field.
- 43:14Lou Brock down on one knee up with the ball.
- 43:17Foy makes the big turn at first base.
- 43:19And that's the first hit of the ball game.
- 43:29Last year Foy was a great second half hitter for the Red Sox.
- 43:33That was his story again this year, although Joe has not been playing regularly of late.
- 43:38But he and George Scott were picked as rookies of the year last year
- 43:42because Scott had a great first half and Foy a great second half of Boston.
- 43:47Mike Andrews, the first pitch to him.
- 43:49He tries to punt one down to third baseline.
- 43:51Mike Shannon up the ball.
- 43:52He can't pick it up.
- 43:53Mike Shannon at third.
- 43:54Cannot find a handle. Foy moves down to second.
- 43:59And Mike Andrews on at first base.
- 44:11It would be an error on number five, the third baseman.
- 44:17Mike Shannon, error five.
- 44:20They're keeping score.
- 44:22So now then we have runners on first and second.
- 44:25It's one away.
- 44:28The hitter, Karl Yastremski.
- 44:34Karl taking his time now.
- 44:38He looks back.
- 44:40Foy at second base.
- 44:41Here is the pitch.
- 44:42A fastball just got the outside corner.
- 44:46Ed Brunge behind home plate.
- 44:48He's at the American League.
- 44:52At first base, Paul Pryor.
- 44:55Second base, Johnny Stevens.
- 44:56At third base, Al Barlich.
- 44:59Yastremski keeps swinging that bat.
- 45:01Karl looks back at Foy at second.
- 45:03There is a kick to pitch.
- 45:05A curveball just got the outside corner.
- 45:07Strike two.
- 45:080-2 on Yastremski as Karl makes two real good pitches.
- 45:13Looks like they're trying to keep the ball outside on him, Ken.
- 45:16They've been doing that and Karl has been trying to pull it,
- 45:19but I have a feeling today that he's going to go with the pitch,
- 45:22especially in this type of situation,
- 45:24if he can get anything to hit at.
- 45:31Karl gets his time from McCarver.
- 45:33McCarver moves outside.
- 45:36Fastball a little bit too high and a little bit too much outside.
- 45:38Makes a count of one ball and two strikes.
- 45:41In the top half, the third inning.
- 45:42No score in this ballgame at Bush-Dudyam.
- 45:45The fifth game of the World Series.
- 45:47We have runners on first and second.
- 45:49Andrew is on it first.
- 45:51Joe Foy down at second base.
- 45:53Foy has the only hit in the ballgame.
- 45:56Yastremski holds that bat high.
- 45:59Here is a pitch by Carlton.
- 46:01Curveball low and outside.
- 46:02Makes a count of two and two.
- 46:05McCarver, the catcher, he is moved outside.
- 46:09Javier, the second baseman, into talk to Carlton.
- 46:14Two balls, two strikes on Yastremski.
- 46:23He's five for 15 in this series.
- 46:29Here is the pitch.
- 46:31This is at that outside corner.
- 46:33Yastremski caught looking.
- 46:39And that's the fourth strikeout.
- 46:48For Steve Carlton, Yastremski was a little unhappy with that call.
- 46:58A fine pitch for Steve Carlton, low and outside.
- 47:01Just nipped that black part of the plate.
- 47:08Here is the pitch.
- 47:09De'Kin-Harrison, a curveball inside, ball one.
- 47:12Pee-wee, during the season, the Red Sox were 24 and 12 against left-handers,
- 47:1768 and 58 against right-handers.
- 47:20As you can see, they faced a lot more right-handed pitching.
- 47:23I want an old pitch to De'Kin-Harrison.
- 47:25It's outside, two and oh.
- 47:27Part of the reason for that, of course, is Fenway Park.
- 47:30A lot of managers are reticent about throwing left-handers at Fenway
- 47:35because of that short wall in left.
- 47:40Two balls, no strikes.
- 47:43On Kin-Harrison, Carlton looks back at second and four.
- 47:47Here is the pitch, a fastball and a dandy in there.
- 47:49Two balls and one strike.
- 47:52Carlton on the year.
- 47:53He won 14 games and lost nine.
- 48:03Kin-Harrison looking out at Steve Carlton.
- 48:06Here is the pitch, the big kick.
- 48:08It's a down ball in the hole.
- 48:09It's a base hit.
- 48:10Low drive.
- 48:11In for the ball.
- 48:12Here comes Joe Foy in to score the first one for the Red Sox.
- 48:16And the Red Sox lead in this ball game by a score of one another
- 48:20as Kin-Harrison gets a base hit in the hole out in the left field
- 48:25to score Foy from second base.
- 48:27Moving down to second was Mike Andrews.
- 48:29And on at first base, Kin-Harrison.
- 48:32And that brings up George Scott.
- 48:43So it's two hits and they're sending one before and one by Kin-Harrison.
- 48:50George Scott chokes up on the bat a little bit.
- 48:55Steve Carlton, here's the kick.
- 48:57Curve ball, swung on and missed, strike one.
- 49:03A beautiful day here in St. Louis.
- 49:08And this is a beautiful ballpark.
- 49:10If you're ever in St. Louis, come out and see this.
- 49:13You'd love it.
- 49:14Pass ball in there.
- 49:15Call strike two.
- 49:19On at second, Mike Andrews.
- 49:21On at first, Kin-Harrison.
- 49:23The Red Sox lead by a score of one to nothing.
- 49:26They're battling to stay alive.
- 49:28They have to win this one.
- 49:30Steve Carlton, here's the pitch to George Scott.
- 49:33They're the lazy looper going out in the right field.
- 49:35Roger Maris underneath it and takes it to the third out.
- 49:39And that's all for the Red Sox here in the top half of the third inning.
- 49:42But they came up with one big run, so the score after two and a half innings of play.
- 49:46It's the Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing.
- 49:52Notice how some infielders have the uncanny knack of always being right in front of the ball.
- 49:57They're in position and they're on their toes.
- 50:00And when the grounder comes, they're right there to make the play.
- 50:03Well, you know, most defensive drivers have the same ability.
- 50:07They know how to anticipate trouble and to be ready when it comes.
- 50:11When winter comes, it won't be long now, they get set for snow and icy roads with a set of new snow tires.
- 50:17And the snow tires many good drivers prefer are BF Goodrich Trailmakers Silver Towns.
- 50:23They're built to the toughest four-ply nylon card and have the deepest biting edges you can buy.
- 50:29The trailmaker tread is wide and deep, sends you over icy roads with sure-footed safety.
- 50:35Trailmakers are quiet, too, and they won't put you into the poorhouse either.
- 50:39You can get your trailmakers for no money down.
- 50:42You want steel safety studs? Your BF dealer can handle that, too.
- 50:47So get into position for winter right now.
- 50:50Get Trailmakers Silver Town snow tires from your BF Goodrich Stower R dealer.
- 50:56Ken Harrelson's ground single into left field scored Joe Foy in the top of the third,
- 51:02and it is one-to-nothing Boston as we get set now for the last half of the third inning at Bush Memorial Stadium.
- 51:10Jim Lombard, retired sixth vet in a row, he's now facing Javier, the fellow that got the only hit off in the last game.
- 51:18A fastball just got the outside gunner. Strike one.
- 51:28Six for 14. That's what Javier has done in the series. He's had a dandy.
- 51:34Fastball swung on, foul straight back, strike two.
- 51:38You have to like this Lombard. You've never seen him pitch.
- 51:44He's always around the plate.
- 51:50Very solemn. Walks more than two or three men a ballgame.
- 51:56He attacks the hitter. He's not afraid to let him hit the ball.
- 52:00The 0-2 pitch to Javier. Here it is. Fastball right back to him on one hop.
- 52:04Lombard flips the ball over to George Scott at first base, and that's all for Javier.
- 52:14So Lombard has retired seven men in a row.
- 52:20The Red Sox lead in this ballgame by a score of one-to-nothing.
- 52:26Dow Maxfield, a shortstop of the hitter. Here's the first pitch. Fastball right back to the middle.
- 52:31Mike Andrews makes a fine stop to throw over to George Scott, not to die.
- 52:37Tremendous play by Mike Andrews going far to his right to take the ground ball.
- 52:42He fell to the ground in getting it. Could not get as much as he wanted on his throw, but made a great try.
- 52:48And Maxfield is on, and that is the first St. Louis hit in this ballgame.
- 52:53And Jim Lomborg has now given up two hits in 11 and a third innings of pitching in this World Series.
- 53:01Steve Carlton, the pitcher. He's a left-handed batter.
- 53:06Joe Foy moving in at 30. Is he going to bond? He pops it up.
- 53:09Joe Foy in foul territory takes it as Carlton pops up to the third baseman.
- 53:14Foy back to first base, of course, Dow Maxfield.
- 53:24So it's two down.
- 53:28Brings up Lube Rock. 17 times at bat, eight hits.
- 53:36The first time up, he flied out to right field. It was not an easy chance.
- 53:41Harrelson made a fine running catch. Here's the pitch by Lomborg.
- 53:45A swing and a foul. Straight back, strike one.
- 53:51The Cardinals, they like to run.
- 53:57They have good speed.
- 54:00Of course, the speediest of them all is the hitter up there right now, Lube Rock.
- 54:07We have Dow Maxfield on at first base. It's two away.
- 54:12The score, Red Sox one, the Cardinals nothing. Lomborg comes set, looks over at Maxfield.
- 54:17He flips the ball over to George Scott. Maxfield back in plenty of time at first base.
- 54:23Elston Hart. Crouched down. Lube Rock steps out of the batter's box.
- 54:34Lomborg looking down to Elston Hart. Here's the side.
- 54:40The pitch by Big Jim. Fastball high and outside.
- 54:45Makes a count, one ball and one strike.
- 54:47Hart just steps out in front of home plate, massages that ball, looks around, flips the ball back to Lomborg.
- 54:54The third baseman, Joe Foy, is in about three or four steps
- 55:01to protect that bunk in case of Lube Rock.
- 55:05He lobbed a bump with two men out as you have Kurt Flood in the on-deck circle.
- 55:10A one-and-one pitch. Ball hit off the left, way back up in the stands. Strike two.
- 55:20While we're in the bottom half, the third inning here at Busch Stadium,
- 55:24the Red Sox have one run on two hits. They have not made an error.
- 55:29The Cardinals have no runs on one hit, and they've made one miscue.
- 55:35One ball and two strikes on Lube Rock.
- 55:38And he has a closed stance. He's close to the plate, Rock is.
- 55:42He'll slap the ball to the left, back through the middle, and hit it hard to right field.
- 55:47He struck him out on a real good sinker, and Rock goes down swinging.
- 55:53So that's all for the Cardinals here in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 55:56The score here at Busch Stadium, the Red Sox one, the Cardinals nothing.
- 56:01Hello, this is Petula Clark for Plymouth 68.
- 56:05And the beat goes on, yes the beat goes on.
- 56:11Last year, over a quarter million owners of other low-price cars were won over to Plymouth.
- 56:16It started a movement, a momentum, a beat. And the beat goes on into Plymouth dealers.
- 56:23Styles have come and surely styles will go.
- 56:29But Plymouth's beauty is not a bad, you know, no, no, no.
- 56:34Plymouth beauty does go on and on, as does your Plymouth dealers great deals.
- 56:39See him now. He'll show you how last year's success cars are even more beautiful for 68.
- 56:45And the beat goes on, yes the beat goes on.
- 56:52The Plymouth win you on the beat goes on.
- 56:58And now three important words from your nearby Plymouth dealer. Enjoy the game.
- 57:07Well, Pee-wee, for the third day in a row, the attendance is 54,575.
- 57:14So we've tied the record again. It's been that way every day here at Busch Stadium.
- 57:19It wasn't early. It holds about 49,000, but they've had extra seats put in.
- 57:24And great crowds have turned out each day.
- 57:27Top half of the fourth inning, Reggie Smith, the first hitter. The first pitch is popped up.
- 57:31Max for the shortstop, right in back of the bag at second base, over in front of Javier.
- 57:35It takes it for out number one.
- 57:38So Reggie Smith, flat out to the center fielder, his first time up.
- 57:44And he pops up to the shortstop. He's 0 for 2 on the day.
- 57:49And that brings up Rico Petrocelli, the shortstop.
- 57:53He flat out to the right fielder, his first time up.
- 57:56Carlton's pitch time in there for call strike one.
- 57:59Two hits for the Red Sox, one hit for the Cardinals, but the Red Sox have one run.
- 58:05They lead in this ball game by a score of 1-0.
- 58:08A change up. It's low on inside, makes it count one ball and one strike.
- 58:16Carlton, the kick, the pitch, curve ball, started to have a cut.
- 58:23Petrocelli did, held up. It's too low. Two balls and one strike.
- 58:27Ken, one thing I've noticed about pitching on both teams, they do not take too much time on that rubber.
- 58:33Best ball, hit down the third base. Mike Shannon makes a great play. The long throw, but it's a failure to get Petrocelli.
- 58:41A dandy play by Mike Shannon as he backhanded the ball at third base and made the throw over.
- 58:47And as you said, Pee-wee, they are not in this World Series taking very much time.
- 58:52And of course, I think infielders, and I know you could comment on this, like it that way
- 58:57because it keeps you right up on your toes all the way. Outfielders, too.
- 59:02Elston Hart, the first pitch for Carlton. It's too low. Ball one.
- 59:06You're so right, Ken. Anytime that you get a pitcher out there that gets back up on that rubber
- 59:12and throws without looking around, gets the ball over the plate, the infielders are always on the toes.
- 59:17They're always ready. Always enjoyed playing behind a man that got the ball over and didn't take too much time.
- 59:25The one and old pitch to Elston Hart. There's a ball hit out in the right field.
- 59:28Roger Maris going back. Can he catch it? Right over near the stands. It foul-catch. Oh, he takes it!
- 59:33For out number three. That's all for Elston Hart.
- 59:37And that's all for the Red Sox in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 59:40So after three and a half of these a play at the score, the Red Sox won the Cardinals nothing.
- 59:46Your new Technicrot razor gives you very nice shave.
- 59:51Crazy about not having to handle razor blades since I got your Tectonics razor.
- 1:00:06I like the light feel of your Technicrot razor.
- 1:00:09The hard-pronouncing, easy-shaving Gillette Tecmatic. Ask your face about it.
- 1:00:16Heads Up Hair Groom has come up with a nice discovery for the man whose hair gets must.
- 1:00:22If you used Heads Up this morning, don't put more Heads Up on.
- 1:00:26You can re-groom your hair anywhere you are with just a little water on a comb.
- 1:00:31Now, we don't know how many times water will bring Heads Up back to life again after one application.
- 1:00:36All we can say is, try it and see. Heads Up Hair Groom, in bottles or tubes by Gillette.
- 1:00:44We're going now to the last half of the fourth inning at Bush Memorial Stadium.
- 1:00:49The Red Sox lead the Cardinals by a score of 1 to nothing.
- 1:00:53Kurt Flood will lead off against Jim Lomborgue who goes to the rosin bag and is about ready to work.
- 1:01:00And ready to tell us about it. Once again, Pee Wee Reeves.
- 1:01:04Kurt Flood, all for one on the day. He grinded out to the third baseman.
- 1:01:09His first time up, Jim Lomborgue, the kick. Here's the pitch. A fastball, just got that outside corner. Strike one.
- 1:01:19A great looking young pitcher, this Jim Lomborgue. Here's the pitch.
- 1:01:25Curdball inside. Makes account of one ball and one strike.
- 1:01:29Flood will be followed by Roger Maris and Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:01:35This is the second World Series for Kurt Flood. Here's the pitch by Lomborgue.
- 1:01:39He's hit off to the right, back up in his stand. Strike two. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:01:44He also played the 1964 series. He hit 200.
- 1:01:51He batted 335 in 1967. It was the fourth best average in the National League.
- 1:01:58Had a real fine year. Lomborgue, curveball. A little lazy foul ball right in the back of the stand.
- 1:02:05The youngster got it. And he is very happy.
- 1:02:13Got himself a World Series souvenir.
- 1:02:17I'd like to see that.
- 1:02:19The one ball, two strike pitch by Lomborgue to Kurt Flood.
- 1:02:22There's a little grounder down to George Scott. He runs over and steps on the bag and takes it himself.
- 1:02:37So Lomborgue, not having much trouble so far in this ball game as we're in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:02:44He's given up one hit.
- 1:02:47By the shortstop, Dowell Maxwell back through the middle. Mike Andrews made a great play on Roger Maris.
- 1:02:52The first pitch. Fastball in there. Strike one.
- 1:02:56It's really something to see these two pitchers move that ball around. Lomborgue.
- 1:03:01Fastball outside. Then he'll move that curveball inside. Sinker down. Here's a kick to pitch. Roger Maris trying to bunt one.
- 1:03:08Made no contact. Strike two on him.
- 1:03:15Again, whenever you see a powerhead like Roger Maris trying to bunt, you know they have a little respect for this fellow.
- 1:03:21Two strikes on Roger. The kick. The pitch.
- 1:03:25Face hit out in the right field by Roger Maris. Ken Harrison up with the ball. Maris makes the big turn at first base. Back in there.
- 1:03:33That's the second hit. Given up by Lomborgue.
- 1:03:47Orlando Cepeda, by his standards, has not had a good series. He's not going to break loose at any time.
- 1:03:57Gets a nice hand. As the Cardinals, fans come to life here at Busch City and they trail one another.
- 1:04:03Gets one away. Roger Maris on at first base. Curveball inside. Ball one.
- 1:04:09Both clubs now have two hits, but the Red Sox have one run. They scored one in the third inning.
- 1:04:16Cepeda had 25 home runs during the National League play. Bad at 325.
- 1:04:24Flip over to George Scott. Maris back in plenty of time.
- 1:04:28A short stop in second baseman in a couple of steps. They're waiting for that double play.
- 1:04:34Foy at third base, not too far off the line. Cepeda hits the ball everywhere. There's a flip to Scott at first base.
- 1:04:40Maris not taking too much of a lead. You have to play Cepeda just about straight away, except the Red Sox are playing a little bit right center.
- 1:04:50Reggie Smith is the one and 0 pitch. The long board kick. The curveball is too high. Ball two.
- 1:05:01Ken, long boring has to keep the ball down to be effective.
- 1:05:06That's right. That's when he is at his best. And that's what he's trying to get done right here.
- 1:05:12He hasn't walked anybody. He's struck out too, but he's struggling now.
- 1:05:162-0 pitch to Cepeda. It's foul straight back. Elstead Hart coming back. Elston, you have no chance.
- 1:05:22And the count is now two balls and one strike.
- 1:05:26But as I did mention once before, Peewee, Jim this year, fortunately at times, has found that when he's been up,
- 1:05:33and he doesn't like to be up, but sometimes when he is, that fastball will rise for him.
- 1:05:39And that has helped him some. And in the Winter League this past year, he picked up a slider, so he's got an additional pitch working for him.
- 1:05:47Two balls, one strike on Cepeda. Here's the pitch. Swung on. Battle tip. Makes the count two and two.
- 1:05:56Well, I could say, Ken, with the speed that I've seen on his fastball, I cannot see why he can't come up with that fastball occasionally.
- 1:06:05Well, during the course of the season, he has.
- 1:06:09Just a fine-looking young pitcher. Jim Lombard. And to win 22 games in the American League, you would have to have something, or any league.
- 1:06:22One run for the Red Sox. No runs for the Cardinals. When the bottom half, the fourth inning, it's one out.
- 1:06:29The count is two and two on Orlando Cepeda. We have Roger Maris on at first base. Lombard comes set, looks over at Maris.
- 1:06:36He flips the ball over to Scott. Try to get Maris back easily.
- 1:06:41One thing about Lombard, he's always going to first base that rudder on there. Keep him close.
- 1:06:49Cepeda steps out of the box. The umpire, Ed Rungy, calls time. Now everybody's ready.
- 1:06:55Lombard comes set. Elston Hart moves outside. Sidearm fastball. A little sinker. Low on inside. Ball three.
- 1:07:07Well, let's see if Roger Maris, with a count of three and two on Cepeda, went away, if he'll be taking off from first base.
- 1:07:14Well, in the bottom half, the fourth inning here at Bush Stadium, the Red Sox lead the Cardinals by a score of one and other.
- 1:07:21The Red Sox trying to take the sixth game back to Boston. The three and two pitch, there goes Maris.
- 1:07:27There's a curveball hit out of the left field. Can Yastritsky get to it? It's going to be in foul territory.
- 1:07:32He's right over there at near the stand. He takes it. And hustling back to first base, Roger Maris.
- 1:07:40There isn't much room down there in foul territory, and it's out in the area where the pitchers warm up for the start of the ballgame.
- 1:07:47It's probably about eight or ten feet. He has had to make a long run and made a good backhanded catch of the ball.
- 1:07:57Yastritsky out in left field. Lou Brock, there's you looking to do the best.
- 1:08:03Both of them have good speed, and they both charge everything. Tim McCarver is the hitter.
- 1:08:09Lombard flips the ball back over to Scott at first base to keep Roger Maris on us.
- 1:08:16McCarver flied out to Yastritsky in left field his first time up. He's two for 13 in the series.
- 1:08:24Lombard set. Here's the pitch. Fastball, the sinker in there. Call strike one.
- 1:08:32It's two away. Roger Maris on at first base with the bottom half the fourth inning.
- 1:08:37The Red Sox won. The Cardinals nothing.
- 1:08:42Lombard has his sign. McCarver squats over at that plate. Here is the pitch.
- 1:08:47A little bit too low. Makes you count one ball and one strike.
- 1:08:51You see all kinds of stances at home plate.
- 1:08:56Near the plate, back away from it. The bat straight up, the bat around your neck.
- 1:09:05McCarver right over the top of that plate. Here's the pitch. Fastball, just got the outside corner.
- 1:09:13One ball and two strikes on Tim.
- 1:09:21We've talked about McCarver's speed as a catcher. He led the National League catchers in 67 with eight stolen bases.
- 1:09:31On at first base, Roger Maris. It's two away. One ball and two strikes on Tim McCarver.
- 1:09:37Lombard takes a little bit too much time. Can't get together on the signs with Elston Howard. McCarver steps out of there.
- 1:09:43Everyone is ready. No, McCarver isn't ready. Steps back out again.
- 1:09:52Lombard comes set. The one and two pitch to McCarver.
- 1:09:57Right back to the middle, Lombard up with it. Flips the ball over to George Scott.
- 1:10:01And that's all for McCarver. And that's all for the Cardinals here in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:10:06So the score after four innings of play. It's still the Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:10:12Whistling my favorite song. Gotta get moving right along. Oh, I'd walk a mile for a camel.
- 1:10:28Walkin' through nowhere. Gonna find real big flavor there. Yes, I'd walk a mile for a camel. I'd walk a mile for a camel. I'd walk a mile more than you.
- 1:10:44little old shoe with a great big mold. Yes, I'd walk a mile for a camel. I'd walk a mile for a camel.
- 1:10:58This little message is strictly for smokers who've never tasted a camel cigarette.
- 1:11:03Camel smokers, you know what we mean. You other guys, start walking.
- 1:11:11I'm Peter Rees, working with Ken Coleman. We're in the top half of the fifth inning here at Busch Stadium.
- 1:11:17And I've enjoyed these last three days working with this fellow, Mr. Ken Coleman, and it's a pleasure to turn the game over to him. Ken, come on in, pal.
- 1:11:26Okay, thank you very much. Lomborg is up, swings and misses on the first pitch for strike one.
- 1:11:31Jim struck out in the third inning. The Red Sox have a one to nothing lead. The outfield playing around toward right.
- 1:11:38Left-hander Steve Carlton kicks and throws. Lomborg fouls it back to the screen and the cameras strike two.
- 1:12:06He's coming up to the plate. Interesting sidelight on Lomborg. He's a Stanford graduate, but when they played at home this year,
- 1:12:14the last couple of times he stayed at a hotel because it makes him feel like he's on the road where he has a better record.
- 1:12:21So a little bit of superstition was involved. Here's Boy, one for two. He struck out and singled.
- 1:12:27Takes a call strike on the outside corner at the knees.
- 1:12:31Here's the good rungy of the American League, working his third World Series, calling the balls and strikes.
- 1:12:37Here's the windup in pitch by Carlton. Fly ball hit into center field. Flood going back. He's waiting.
- 1:12:43And about 400 feet away he makes the catch. What a tremendous jump. Kirk Flood gets on a ball out in center field.
- 1:12:52He's waiting for balls that some other outfielders might still be going after.
- 1:12:57Now the Boston fifth inning in the batter is second baseman Mike Andrews. Mike has popped up the second and sacrificed in the third.
- 1:13:05Boston with a 1-0 lead as we play in the top half of the fifth inning in this all-important game in St. Louis.
- 1:13:14Carlton gets the sign from Tim McCarver. Tall left-hander throws outside for a ball.
- 1:13:21The umpire at first base is Paul Pryor at second, John Stevens. Al Barlichs at third. Frank Umont down the left field line.
- 1:13:28Augie, Donatelli, and Wright. Pitch is swung on a miss and a hard cut was taken by Mike Andrews.
- 1:13:36One ball, one strike. Carlton, a long, lean guy at 6'4", 195 pounds. He'll be 23 on the 22nd of December.
- 1:13:49The pitch to Andrews is taken low for a ball. Two and one. Two balls, one strike. Two out of nobody on in the Boston fifth.
- 1:13:5854,575 looking on on a bright, sunny day. The pitch, line drive, base hit into left field. In for it comes Brock and Mike Andrews with two out of the fifth singles into left.
- 1:14:14Mike Shannon, the third baseman, went diving to his left and made a good try on the ball but could not quite reach the hard shot off the bat of Mike Andrews.
- 1:14:23So the batter is Carl Yuspremsky now. He has walked in the first inning and was called out on strikes in the third.
- 1:14:35Andrews at first, two away. Sepeda holding against the baserunner. Carlton, the left-hander, throws to first. The runner is back safely.
- 1:14:43Marist deep in right. Flood shaded into right center. The set by the left-hander and the pitch. Strike call. One strike on Carl Yuspremsky.
- 1:15:02Two-time American League Batting Champion. 321 in 1963 and 326 this year in winning the Triple Crown.
- 1:15:14The pitch is outside, one and one. One other man won the Triple Crown and was tied for home runs and that was former Cardinal Great, Joe Medward.
- 1:15:25He as was tied with Harmon Killebrew, the twins, at 44. Here's the 1-1 pitch. There's a ground ball.
- 1:15:37Javier to his right, up with it, flips over to the shortstop Max Bill for the fourth player retiring to side.
- 1:15:44So the Red Sox are out in the fifth inning. No runs, one hit, then one is left.
- 1:15:49After four and one-half, the score is Boston 1 and St. Louis nothing.
- 1:15:55Say when you want to get home safe in this game, you sometimes have to come in on a slide and that's baseball.
- 1:16:01But when you're driving around on an icy road this winter, well that's no time to play around.
- 1:16:06Sure footed traction is what you need for safety. No sliding or skidding will do.
- 1:16:11And that's why we suggest B.F. Goodrich Trailmaker Silver Town snow tires.
- 1:16:16Trailmakers give you a solid footing even on the slipperiest road.
- 1:16:20The wide modern tread takes hold, gives you the traction you need in the takeoff,
- 1:16:24and the deep biting edges take you around the turns without trouble.
- 1:16:28B.F.G. Trailmakers are built with tough nylon cords to give you more safe driving miles.
- 1:16:35Sure it's possible to pay less for a snow tire, but B.F.G.'s four-ply nylon construction means many winters of safe driving.
- 1:16:43Get B.F.G. Trailmakers Silver Town snow tires for no money down and free installation at your nearby B.F. Goodrich store or dealer.
- 1:16:53They're a good way to get a good start this winter.
- 1:16:57It's the last half of the fifth inning in St. Louis, and Mike Shannon, right-handed hitting third baseman,
- 1:17:09will lead off for the Cardinals against Jim Lombard.
- 1:17:13The Cardinals have had two men on in this ballgame.
- 1:17:17With one out in the third, Maxfield had an infield hit.
- 1:17:20With one out in the fourth, Maris singled the right.
- 1:17:23Here's the pitch.
- 1:17:25Shannon takes it low and away, ball one.
- 1:17:27Mike fouled out to the catcher, Elston Howard, right in the batter's box his first time up.
- 1:17:33He'll be followed by Julian Javier and then Dal Maxfield.
- 1:17:39WGY WGF, that's connected A.
- 1:17:43Right called at the knees, one and one.
- 1:17:47Shannon, six-foot, three inches tall, just under 200 pounds, 28 years old, a native of St. Louis.
- 1:17:58He swings and misses on a low-sinking fastball, and it's one and two.
- 1:18:08Mike had 77 runs batted in this year, tops for his National League career.
- 1:18:15The pitch to him, he swings and misses, strike three.
- 1:18:19Looked like he was trying to hold back but couldn't.
- 1:18:22And Lahnborg gets his third strikeout, and there's one away in the fifth inning.
- 1:18:29Lahnborg, in pitching the one hitter the other day in Boston, struck out four.
- 1:18:38Julian Javier up now.
- 1:18:41He bounced back to Lahnborg at the mound in the third inning.
- 1:18:45The tall Boston right-hander looks in and gets the sign from Elston Howard,
- 1:18:49rocks into action in the pitch, high pop-up toward third and foul territory,
- 1:18:54four in front of the coaches' box, Joe's gutted for the out, two away.
- 1:19:00Two down in the fifth inning.
- 1:19:02The Red Sox lead one to nothing in the batter, will be Dal Maxfield.
- 1:19:09A very versatile performer who played all seven games of the 64 series at second.
- 1:19:17Fine defensive shortstop of the Cardinals.
- 1:19:20The pitch to him, a breaking ball for a strike.
- 1:19:23It was Lahn away and Dal wanted to hold back but couldn't, strike one.
- 1:19:29Had an infield hit in the third when he hit a ground ball to the right of Andrews.
- 1:19:33Mike made a great stop on the ball but couldn't get the speedy Maxfield going to first.
- 1:19:39The pitch inside for a ball, one and one.
- 1:19:45One ball and one strike to count.
- 1:19:52Lahnborg kicks and fires, Maxfield takes it low and away, two balls and a strike.
- 1:19:58Dal has hit two homers during his major league career at the Polo grounds in 1962
- 1:20:04and here in St. Louis this year against the Mets.
- 1:20:11Two balls, one strike.
- 1:20:13Lahnborg throws, there is a slow roller toward third that is fouled.
- 1:20:18It must have hit off Maxfield's foot in the batter's box or in there and then out the foyer.
- 1:20:23Two and two.
- 1:20:27The Red Sox have one run on three hits.
- 1:20:30The Cardinals no runs, two hits.
- 1:20:32There's been one error in the game by St. Louis.
- 1:20:41Elston Howard crouching back of the plate.
- 1:20:44Lahnborg gets the sign.
- 1:20:47Tall right-hander fires and the pitch is grounded down to third, backhanded by Foy.
- 1:20:52Lahn throw to Scott to get him.
- 1:20:54Great defensive play by third baseman Joe Foy, backhanding the ball back of the bag
- 1:20:59and throwing out Maxfield at first.
- 1:21:02No runs, no hits and nobody left on and after five innings the score is Boston 1 and St. Louis nothing.
- 1:21:10Next year over a quarter million owners of other low-price cars were won over to Plymouth.
- 1:21:15It started a movement, a momentum, a beat and the beat goes on with Petula Clark.
- 1:21:22And the beat goes on, yes the beat goes on.
- 1:21:28The Plymouth win you over, beat goes on.
- 1:21:35Maybe 1968 will be the year we win you over.
- 1:21:38Your Plymouth dealer has a lineup of 64 beautiful new models just waiting to steal your heart.
- 1:21:44See your Plymouth dealer today and learn how easily you can catch the beat, the Plymouth win you over beat.
- 1:21:50Yes the beat goes on.
- 1:21:54The Plymouth win you over, beat goes on.
- 1:21:59And the beat goes on.
- 1:22:03And now three important words from your nearby Plymouth dealer, enjoy the game.
- 1:22:08We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:22:18By going to the top half of the sixth inning the first hitter will be Ken Harrelson for the Red Sox.
- 1:22:22The Red Sox have one run on three hits, no errors.
- 1:22:25The Cardinals have no runs on two hits and one error.
- 1:22:28And now then, Ken Coleman.
- 1:22:30Harrelson hit into a force play his first time up and in the third inning hit a ground single through the hole into left to score a four with the only run of the game.
- 1:22:40Left-hander Steve Carlton, ready to work for St. Louis.
- 1:22:44The young fellow has done a brilliant job this afternoon, kicks and throws outside for a ball.
- 1:22:50Scott is on deck and Smith will bat third.
- 1:22:58Carlton fires, there's a pop foul coming back out of play and the count goes to one and one.
- 1:23:06Carlton averaged over seven strikeouts per nine innings which was the best rate on the staff this year and his control improved considerably.
- 1:23:15He walked 62 men in 193 innings of pitching.
- 1:23:19He earned run average of 2.98. Big left-hander fires a breaking ball over at the knees, first strike called, it's one and two.
- 1:23:28McCarver back at the plate, Cepeda at first, Javier at second, Maxville at short and Shannon at third.
- 1:23:35Brock is in left field, Flood in center, Maris in right.
- 1:23:39Maris, the only player in the field, is in the shade as the sun bathes Bush Memorial Stadium.
- 1:23:46The one and two pitch to Harrelson is outside, two and two to Kent.
- 1:23:56Harrelson's 1967 average of 255 is the best of his American League career.
- 1:24:05He stole 10 bases in 13 tries this year, takes one outside, three and two.
- 1:24:12He had 16 hits for Boston and eight of them were for extra bases and he played with three clubs in 1967.
- 1:24:21The game continues at the beginning of side three.
- 1:24:25The Senators, the Athletics and the Red Sox.
- 1:24:29Three balls, two strikes to count. This is the top of the sixth. The Red Sox have a one-nothing lead.
- 1:24:35Pitch is high, ball four.
- 1:24:38Harrelson leads off the sixth inning by drawing a walk.
- 1:24:43That's the second one off Carlton.
- 1:24:46He walked Yastremski back in the first inning and now faces Scott, who in an unusual play in the second struck out.
- 1:24:54But when the strikeout turned into a wild pitch, George got the first base.
- 1:24:59Then in the third inning he flied to Roger Marison right.
- 1:25:03Sepeda holds against Harrelson at first. Bobby Doerr is the first base coach for Boston.
- 1:25:11In field up a double play depth.
- 1:25:13Here's the pitch. Scott hits a ground ball.
- 1:25:16Bobby Doerr makes a great stop, flips to second for one, back to first for a double play.
- 1:25:34Paulien Javier, the second baseman who has pulled off several sparklers in this World Series,
- 1:25:40has done it again as he went to his right and to his knees to grab a hard shot off the bat of Scott.
- 1:25:47Flipped it underhand to Maxville, who sent it on to first for a snappy double play.
- 1:25:53Two men out in the sixth inning in the batter is Reggie Smith.
- 1:25:57Boston leading one to nothing. Carlton into the windup and the pitch. It is low for a ball.
- 1:26:03Smith has flied to center field and popped up to shortstop.
- 1:26:09A really great play by the Cardinals' second baseman, Paulien Javier.
- 1:26:14Pitch is taken for ball two by Smith.
- 1:26:22One run, three hits, no errors for Boston. No runs, two hits, one error for St. Louis.
- 1:26:27The pitch, high foul ball drifting off the first base side into the lower seats out of play.
- 1:26:33Two and one on Reggie.
- 1:26:36Again, I thought that Javier made a great play up in Fenway Park in Boston when he forced the runner at second base.
- 1:26:42He knocked the ball down or he dove for the ball. I didn't see how he could get the man out at second base.
- 1:26:47There, how he got the ball to Maxville and time to get a double play, I'll never know.
- 1:26:53Here's the 2-1 pitch and it's popped up in back of second.
- 1:26:56Javier draws the bead under the ball and he's got it retiring the sides.
- 1:27:01In the sixth inning for Boston, no runs, no hits and nobody left on.
- 1:27:06And so as we come to the end of five and a half, it's the Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:27:12I adore it ladies and gentlemen. This is Rocky Dog and a famous fighter.
- 1:27:16You know ladies and gentlemen, a lot of you guys want to know what it's like to get in the rig.
- 1:27:20Well let me tell you, I don't care how good a pungent you are.
- 1:27:23You get in the rig, somebody's going to go, bam, bam, hit you right in the face and he's going to give you a face hurt.
- 1:27:28When you shave before you go in the rig, use a blade that pulls on your face, you're going to get a face hurt.
- 1:27:32Then when you go in the rig, you go bam, bam, hit you right in the face, you're going to get another face hurt.
- 1:27:36Now let me tell you ladies and gentlemen, two face hurts in one day, don't do your face any good.
- 1:27:42So what I do ladies and gentlemen, I use the Gillette Super Stainless Blade, the one they call a spoiler.
- 1:27:48It's got this miracle plastic coating on the edge, reduces the pull when you shave, you don't get a face hurt.
- 1:27:53Then when I go in the rig, you go bam, bam, hit me right in the face, I already get that one face hurt, I'll use it with a fight.
- 1:27:58So I'll follow you ladies and gentlemen, I will get the Gillette Super Stainless Blade, the spoiler.
- 1:28:03It's going to make your face feel just great, or somebody comes along and gives you a punch.
- 1:28:08Get you up people, can't do anything about that.
- 1:28:13And on the bottom half of the sixth inning, Steve Carlton, who has pitched a great ballgame for the Cardinals,
- 1:28:19but he trails in this ballgame by one and oven, we're going to have a pinch hitter for him Ken.
- 1:28:23A little left hander by name of Bob Tolling, leading things off for the Cardinals here in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:28:29And he's another fellow with great speed for St. Louis, the pitch to him is outside ball one.
- 1:28:34Joe Foy, the Red Sox third baseman, is playing up the line, he knows that Tolling might put one down.
- 1:28:41Tolling played all three outfield positions and also has used the spell Cepeda at first.
- 1:28:47The pitch is popped back foul, Elston Howard back but it's out of play and the count is one and one.
- 1:28:55Pretty good catch down below as the ball bounced around, that's the reason for the noise.
- 1:29:00One ball and one strike to count on Tolling, and what a job was turned in by young Steve Carlton,
- 1:29:07as he went six innings, allowed three hits in one run, walked two and struck out four.
- 1:29:13The pitch takes it up to one ball, two strikes.
- 1:29:19Brock is on deck and Flood is due up third, Boston has a one to nothing lead.
- 1:29:25Lomborg gets the sign from Howard.
- 1:29:31Tall right hander throws, breaking ball in for a strike called, Tolling, call out on strikes.
- 1:29:38And Lomborg has now equaled his total in game one of the World Series,
- 1:29:43and is game one for him when he struck out four men.
- 1:29:49The batter is Brock, he flied deep to right field in the first inning with Harrelson making a fine running catch,
- 1:29:56struck out swinging in the third.
- 1:29:59Ray Washburn is warming up in the St. Louis bullpen, pitch is a fastball outside.
- 1:30:22Brock with a closed stance waiting, Lomborg delivers.
- 1:30:26Ground ball hit down towards Scott at first, he's got it, plays it alone and they get the flying clock coming down the line.
- 1:30:33Two down on the sixth inning, Boston with a one to nothing lead.
- 1:30:41Kirk Flood is at the plate, he has granted to four at third and to Scott at first base.
- 1:30:49They play him a step or two toward right in the outfield.
- 1:30:54Lomborg throws, curve on the outside corner for a strike call.
- 1:30:58Two men out, nobody on, last to the sixth, the Red Sox lead one to nothing.
- 1:31:06Lomborg fires a fastball, hit on the ground a second, Andrews has it, throws to Scott for the out, they're down in order in the sixth.
- 1:31:13No runs, no hits and nobody left on at the end of six full innings, the score, the Cardinals, the Red Sox won and the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:31:26So you've made up your mind, you're going to try a big one, you know, one of those new extra length cigarettes.
- 1:31:33Well then, this announcement is just for you.
- 1:31:36If you want a long one, be sure you get the one taste worth making longer.
- 1:31:40Get the taste that's springtime fresh, the taste of new super king size Salem filter cigarettes.
- 1:31:47Yes, they're here, brand new, super king size Salem with the extra length that refreshes your taste a few moments longer.
- 1:31:55And aren't you glad? You get a few moments more to enjoy America's favorite menthol taste,
- 1:32:01the freshest taste in smoking, now extended just a few moments longer.
- 1:32:06So if you want to try a big cigarette, don't make a big mistake when it comes to taste.
- 1:32:12One pack and you'll know what we mean when we say new super king size Salem is the one menthol taste worth making longer.
- 1:32:22We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:32:26Your radio has not gone cuckoo. That's merely the sound of Saratoga Vichy and its long lasting fizz.
- 1:32:36The story behind that fizz is even stranger than the sound.
- 1:32:40You see, nature carbonates Saratoga Vichy, giving it a perky little fizz with incredible staying power.
- 1:32:47It keeps drinks fresh far longer than club soda or any of the imitation vichys.
- 1:32:53Saratoga, the authentic vichy in the yellow label.
- 1:33:00In the new pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, his name is Ray Warspratt.
- 1:33:06The funny thing about this fellow, he did not relieve at all in 1967.
- 1:33:11He had 27 starts, three complete games. His record was 10 wins and seven losses.
- 1:33:20Earned run average 3.53.
- 1:33:23Now Warspratt, I've seen him pitch a few times. He does throw a knuckleball, tries to keep the ball down, and that's the only trick pitch he has.
- 1:33:31Steve Carlton, he won six innings, gave up three hits, one run, two walks, and struck out five men and he did a fine job, Ken.
- 1:33:43He did a tremendous job. The only run in this ballgame came in the third with one out when Foy singled.
- 1:33:50Andrew sacrificed him to second base. An arrow was charged on the play to Shannon.
- 1:33:55And then Harrelson singled a left field with two men out, sending Foy home.
- 1:34:00So it is one to nothing Boston as we move into the seventh inning and leading off for the Red Sox is Rico Petrocelli.
- 1:34:09He has flied to Roger Maris in right field and in the fourth inning Mike Shannon made a brilliant backhanded stop and threw him out at first base.
- 1:34:18Washburn has had injury problems on occasion over his career.
- 1:34:25Veteran right-hander ready to work.
- 1:34:28The first pitch to Petrocelli is low and outside, ball one.
- 1:34:32Better and right-hander checking now and time has called for a moment but it looks like we're ready to go once again.
- 1:34:49Boston leading one to nothing in the seventh inning.
- 1:34:53The pitch, Petrocelli hits a ground foul going down to third base coach Eddie Paposky.
- 1:34:59One ball and one strike. Paposky, the coach at third for Boston, has been in the Red Sox organization for a long time, 30 years,
- 1:35:08and has done quite a job with the young fellows on this club, many of whom he had in the minors.
- 1:35:14This is his first year in the majors.
- 1:35:17There's another ground foul back by Rico, one ball, two strikes on Petrocelli.
- 1:35:25Looking for his second hit of the 1967 World Series.
- 1:35:32Washburn into the windup and the pitch, low and away, two and two.
- 1:35:42Early in 1963, Washburn injured his right shoulder and it took him nearly four years before he felt he regained full strength.
- 1:35:51There's a check swing foul back and the count holds at two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:02Washburn did not appear in the 1964 World Series with the Cardinals because of arm trouble.
- 1:36:10Right-hander kicks and throws, the pitch is low and away.
- 1:36:14Full count on Petrocelli leading off the Boston seventh, the Red Sox with a one-to-nothing lead.
- 1:36:29The 64th World Series.
- 1:36:33Here's the 3-2 pitch. Petrocelli, strike three, called.
- 1:36:38Hits the corner on the knees on the outside part of the plate and is one away.
- 1:36:43One down on the seventh.
- 1:36:48Washburn relieved only once in 1966 on the 4th of June.
- 1:36:55Here's Elston Howard, pitch to Ali. He swings and misses, strike one.
- 1:37:00He was trying to hold back and could not.
- 1:37:03Veteran Red Sox catcher is 38 years old and was born here in St. Louis.
- 1:37:09Get into a force play in the second, foul to Marison Wright his last time.
- 1:37:13Swings hard, doesn't get it, strike two.
- 1:37:17One man out in the seventh inning and the Red Sox lead the Cardinals one-to-nothing.
- 1:37:24Boston with three hits and the Cardinals with two.
- 1:37:27The pitch is outside and low, one and two.
- 1:37:39Washburn into the windup, the pitch to Howard is low and outside, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:37:51Howard playing in the World Series for the tenth time in a great baseball career.
- 1:37:59The 2-2 pitch to Elston is outside, three and two.
- 1:38:03So as he did with Rico Petrocelli, Washburn goes to a full count with Howard.
- 1:38:08He got Rico with a good breaking ball on the outside corner at the knees.
- 1:38:14Here's the windup, the pitch.
- 1:38:17Ground ball and one hop to the mound, throw to first base, they get him easily.
- 1:38:22Two men out in the Boston seventh.
- 1:38:24Washburn to Cepeda and the batter will be Jim Lomborg.
- 1:38:32Lomborg has pitched brilliantly this afternoon here in St. Louis as he did in Boston in Game 1,
- 1:38:39as he has done all year for the Red Sox.
- 1:38:42He struck out in the third inning, was called out on strikes in the fifth.
- 1:38:49Washburn throws, Lomborg takes a strike called on the outside corner down.
- 1:38:55The outfield plays him toward right and as Peewee mentioned earlier,
- 1:38:59although his average would be liable, he's become a pretty good hitter.
- 1:39:03Swings and misses, strike two.
- 1:39:06And he says that part of the reason is because Bobby Dore helped him
- 1:39:10partly because he just got up so much more this year than he's been used to.
- 1:39:16You've got to learn something.
- 1:39:18The pitch to him is outside and the count is one and two.
- 1:39:25Lomborg, over the year, pitched 274 innings.
- 1:39:30Two out, nobody on in the seventh.
- 1:39:33The pitch is outside, two and two.
- 1:39:37So Washburn went to three and two to Petrocelli, three and two to Howard and got him.
- 1:39:42Now works two-two to Lomborg.
- 1:39:49Here's the pitch.
- 1:39:50There's a foul sliced out of play into the lower seats off first.
- 1:39:56Right down an exit way.
- 1:39:58Two and two on Lomborg.
- 1:40:00Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing, this is the seventh inning.
- 1:40:10The pitch, Lomborg fouls it back right in front of us, still two and two.
- 1:40:21There are no soft touches in the St. Louis lineup, but in the last of the seventh,
- 1:40:27they go right to the iron, as they say, with Maris Cepeda and McCarver.
- 1:40:35Two balls, two strikes, two out and nobody on.
- 1:40:39Washburn goes and there's a high pop-up off third, drifting into foul territory
- 1:40:45and into the coaches' box is Shannon where he makes the catch.
- 1:40:48That's all in the seventh, no runs, no hits and nobody left on.
- 1:40:52After six and one-half, the Red Sox won the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:41:00When this World Series is over, can winter be far behind?
- 1:41:03No, it won't be long now before your car has to battle ice and snow,
- 1:41:07so why not get it into shape for the offseason now with snow tires from VF Goodrich.

- 1:41:56VF Goodrich TrailMaker Silver Town snow tires only at your VF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 1:42:05This big crowd, 54,575, taking the traditional stretch in St. Louis
- 1:42:12and Jim Lomborg is ready to pitch to Roger Maris.
- 1:42:15Boston has one run, three hits, and no errors.
- 1:42:18St. Louis no runs, two hits, one error.
- 1:42:21Maris has one of the two cardinal hits, a solid single to right in the fourth.
- 1:42:26The other an infield hit by Maxville in the third.
- 1:42:29The pitch is outside ball one.
- 1:42:33Maris, his first time up, granted out to the first baseman, Scott.
- 1:42:37Then in the fourth, after a bunch try, he got the single.
- 1:42:41Red Sox outfield playing toward right.
- 1:42:47Lomborg into the windup and the tall right-hander fires a strike call one-and-one.
- 1:42:52Maris started for it and then held back.
- 1:42:55Dahlsten, Howard, the catcher, Scott at first, Andrews at second, Petracelli at short,
- 1:43:00Joe Foy at third, Yastramsky in left, Smith in center, Harrelson in right.
- 1:43:06Lomborg fires outside ball two, two-and-one.
- 1:43:13In 15 innings of pitching, Lomborg has given up three hits in this 1967 World Series.
- 1:43:26Two balls, one strike.
- 1:43:28Here's the pitch.
- 1:43:30Strike called on the outside corner at the knees.
- 1:43:33Two-and-two on Roger Maris.
- 1:43:38Roger appearing in his sixth World Series, more than any other member of the Cardinals.
- 1:43:48Lomborg's 2-2 delivery. Maris takes it outside, three-and-two.
- 1:44:01Gentlemen gym, as they call them up in New England, goes to the rosin bag, now kicks away at the rubber.
- 1:44:07Looks down, gets the sign from Howard.
- 1:44:11Three-two pitch on the way.
- 1:44:13There's a high pop-up into shallow right.
- 1:44:16Mike Andrews, the second baseman back, under the ball, makes the catch.
- 1:44:20It was so high in the air that Maris was halfway down to second by the time it came into Andrews' glove.
- 1:44:27So there's one out in the last half of the seventh. The Red Sox lead the Cardinals one to nothing, and the batter is Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:44:36He struck out in the second inning and fouled out to Yastremski, who made a long run into foul territory in left field his last time up on the fourth.
- 1:44:47Lomborg throws. Cepeda fouls it out of play off the first-base side.
- 1:44:59Cepeda led the National League and runs batted in this year with 111, one ahead of the great Roberto Clemente.
- 1:45:08The pitch. Her ball grounded foul outside of third.
- 1:45:12Joe Foy backhanding it, tosses it over to Lomborg.
- 1:45:15Two strikes on Cepeda, one out on the Cardinals' seventh.
- 1:45:19The Red Sox lead St. Louis class score of one to nothing.
- 1:45:31The Red Sox outfield, deep and toward right. Just a step or so that way.
- 1:45:38The pitch to Cepeda is outside and low, one and two.
- 1:45:49Lomborg led the American League in strikeouts with 245. Jim Bunning led the National League with 253.
- 1:45:58The pitch is foul back. Just got a piece of it, still one and two.
- 1:46:07The Cardinals have had two-man reach so far in this ballgame.
- 1:46:12Lomborg has struck out four, has not walked anybody.
- 1:46:17Maxville had an infield hit in the third. Maris, a single of right field in the fourth.
- 1:46:34Lomborg takes a little too much time. Cepeda backs off for just a moment.
- 1:46:41One ball, two strikes. Here's the pitch.
- 1:46:44There's a slow roller toward short, up for Petrocelli, on to first base in time.
- 1:46:49Cepeda grounds out two away in the seventh. Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:46:55The fifth game of the 1967 World Series.
- 1:47:00Red Sox trying to take it back to Fenway Park and the Cardinals trying to wrap it up here in St. Louis.
- 1:47:06The batter is Tim McCarver, the catcher. He has flied to left and bounced out to the pitcher.
- 1:47:13Left-handed batter with a closed stance, crowds in over the plate.
- 1:47:17The pitch to him is a strike call to fastball in at the knees.
- 1:47:29Lomborg with his glove on his left knee, leaning in and getting a sign from Howard.
- 1:47:34Right-hander fires inside and low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:47:47The Boston outfield playing toward right.
- 1:47:50The pitch, McCarver takes it low. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:47:56Boston one, St. Louis nothing. This is the last half of the seventh. There are two men out, nobody on.
- 1:48:08Lomborg looks to Howard for the sign.
- 1:48:13The pitch. Fly ball hit into center field. Reggie Smith to his right a little under the ball and he's got it.
- 1:48:20They're out in order in the seventh. No runs, no hits and nobody left on. At the end of seventh, it's Boston one and St. Louis nothing.
- 1:48:31Move up to Chrysler. The 68s are here. Move up to Chrysler and make your move. It's here.
- 1:48:43The 68 Chryslers are here with more power from a higher output 383 cubic inch V8 all the way up to a big 440.
- 1:48:51More luxury with new options like an eight-track stereotype system. Make your move here now to Chrysler's 68.
- 1:49:00You like its brand new starting, big performance, impressive luxury. So make your move sir. Move up to Chrysler and move up to the movers today.
- 1:49:18See your local Chrysler dealer. Make your move up to Chrysler now.
- 1:49:25We're going to the eighth inning and the man who has scored the only run in this ball game will lead off for Boston.
- 1:49:31That would be Joe Foy. In the third inning with one out, he had a single to left field. Mike Andrews sacrificed Foy going to second.
- 1:49:40There was an error charged on the play to Shannon. And then Harrelson singled to left field to score Foy.
- 1:49:48We pause here 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:49:51Now, pure Jamaica ginger is the only kind of ginger that goes into Saratoga ginger ale. Why?
- 1:49:58To make a ginger ale that's different. One you can drink by itself as well as a mixer.
- 1:50:04Take a sip and it's mellow, gingery without snapping at you.
- 1:50:09Even the bubbles are different. High spirited but long lasting and never overwhelming.
- 1:50:15The people who make Saratoga vichy just can't bear to make a ginger ale like everybody else.
- 1:50:21WGY, WGFM is connected.
- 1:50:24The first hitter for the Red Sox will be Joe Foy.
- 1:50:28The score, the Red Sox won. The card knows nothing. Kim?
- 1:50:33Okay, Pee-wee, you can feel the tension building with about every pitch now.
- 1:50:38Foy one for three. Here's the pitch to him. He tries to bond and misses. Strike one.
- 1:50:43He struck out swinging in the first. Had the key single that scored the run in the third.
- 1:50:48That is, that got him to where he could score it.
- 1:50:51Fly deep to center field in the fifth and Flood made a fine catch on him.
- 1:50:56Pitch is a breaking ball over for a strike ball, two strikes.
- 1:51:00Andrews is on deck. Yostremski is due up third.
- 1:51:06Ray Washburn into the windup, delivers outside for a ball one and two.
- 1:51:11Steve Carlton went the first six innings, allowed three hits in one run,
- 1:51:16walked two and struck out five, had one wild pitch as he turned in a splendid performance.
- 1:51:23One-two delivery is outside, two and two.
- 1:51:27Washburn ran the high counts on all three batters in the seventh,
- 1:51:32going to three and two on Petrocellian Howard and two-two to L'Onbord.
- 1:51:37Now he's two-two to Poi.
- 1:51:42There's a foul drifting back out of play. Two and two.
- 1:51:50Joe is from the Bronx, New York.
- 1:51:53Red Sox went in to play the Yankees in New York once this year and Poi had a grand slam home run.
- 1:52:01Here's the two-two pitch, outside, full count, three and two.
- 1:52:05On the day that Poi hit the grand slam, though, he'd gone home to visit his folks
- 1:52:10and found out that the house had practically burned down when he arrived.
- 1:52:16The three-two delivery, swing on a miss, strike three.
- 1:52:20Joe Poi strikes out to lead off the Boston Apes, the second strikeout for Washburn,
- 1:52:26and the batter will be Mike Andrews.
- 1:52:29Andrews popped up the second base in the first inning, sacrificed in the third,
- 1:52:34singled into left field in the fifth.
- 1:52:37He led the American League in sacrifice punts in 1967 with 19.
- 1:52:44Very good at it.
- 1:52:46Led the International League in 1966 with 24.
- 1:52:51Pitch to him is over for a strike called.
- 1:52:55He had eight home runs this past year and six of them were on the road,
- 1:52:59a couple of them out in Anaheim where he has a built-in cheering section
- 1:53:03every time he plays there.
- 1:53:05High hopper to third baseman Shannon off to his left onto Sepeta for the out.
- 1:53:10Andrews hits a one-hop ground ball to Shannon, and there are two out on the Boston eighth inning.
- 1:53:16Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:53:18The batter is Carl Yastremski.
- 1:53:20Walked in the first inning, was called out on strikes in the third,
- 1:53:24hit into a fourth play in the fifth.
- 1:53:32This is his first time up against right-handed pitching today.
- 1:53:37Washburn gets the sign from McCarver.
- 1:53:40Right-hander fires a strike called on the inside corner, felt high.
- 1:53:46Red Sox one.
- 1:53:47The Cardinals nothing.
- 1:53:48Two men out on the Boston eighth.
- 1:53:50And now the catcher, McCarver, goes out.
- 1:53:53He wants to talk with Washburn.
- 1:53:56And it may be that he thought maybe that pitch should have been away
- 1:54:00because pitchers don't always get the ball just where they want to,
- 1:54:03but they have been for the most part throwing Yastremski outside stuff,
- 1:54:08and that one came to the inside part of the plate.
- 1:54:11That could have been the reason for the conference.
- 1:54:16Now the windup and the pitch.
- 1:54:19Yastremski takes it outside one and one.
- 1:54:26The only run in this game came in the third inning when Harrelson single-to-left to score four.
- 1:54:36Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:54:38Fastball outside and low, two and one.
- 1:54:44Yastremski, ending the season, made seven hits in his last eight times at bat,
- 1:54:50six consecutive hits.
- 1:54:55Changeup is outside, ball three.
- 1:55:02On deck is Harrelson.
- 1:55:05Three balls, one strike on Yastremski who backs out of the box and takes a practice swing.
- 1:55:11Yaz had 27 homers at Fenway, 17 on the road this year.
- 1:55:19Washburn winds and throws.
- 1:55:21Yaz hits a drive down into the left field corner.
- 1:55:23May be good for extra bases.
- 1:55:25Yastremski around first, Brock up with the ball, and into second standing with a double is Carl Yastremski.
- 1:55:31He went to the opposite field with the outside pitch and lined a double down to the left field corner.
- 1:55:37And so with two men out and the Red Sox eight, the batter will be Harrelson with Yastremski at second.
- 1:55:44Boston leads St. Louis by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:55:48Harrelson hit into a force play in the first, single driving home Poi in the third, had a walk in the sixth inning.
- 1:56:02Washburn with his glove on his left knee leans in for the sign.
- 1:56:06Yastremski leads away from second, right-hander at the belt and the pitch.
- 1:56:11Low and outside, ball one.
- 1:56:23Harrelson, as he always does, steps out of the box between pitches.
- 1:56:27Now the right-handed batter moves in again.
- 1:56:30Washburn ready.
- 1:56:31The pitch.
- 1:56:32Ground ball out to short.
- 1:56:34Off to the right of step goes Maxville.
- 1:56:36Throws to Zapata fully out, retiring to side.
- 1:56:39In the eighth inning, the Red Sox get Noron's one hit and leave one.
- 1:56:44After seven and a half, the score, the Red Sox won the Cardinals nothing.
- 1:56:50If you want to settle questions about shaving, ask your face about it.
- 1:56:54The average face is smarter than it looks.
- 1:56:57It may not know much about razors, but it knows what it likes.
- 1:57:01Take the new Gillette Tecmatic razor.
- 1:57:03It's light.
- 1:57:04You don't bear down so much.
- 1:57:07Even the face appreciates this lightness.
- 1:57:09It not only feels better, it runs less of a chance of getting nicked or cut.
- 1:57:15Or say halfway through a shave you notice the edge is getting dull.
- 1:57:19And try changing blades with your old razor.
- 1:57:22Hard, isn't it?
- 1:57:24Slippery fingers, sharp little thing.
- 1:57:26You just wouldn't bother.
- 1:57:29But with the Tecmatic, you just flip the lever for a fresh shaving edge.
- 1:57:33It's easy.
- 1:57:34You would bother.
- 1:57:36From your face's point of view, this is good.
- 1:57:39It means you don't keep shaving with a worn-out blade.
- 1:57:43Consult an expert about the Gillette Tecmatic razor.
- 1:57:46Ask your face about it.
- 1:57:51We're going to the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 1:57:53Jim Lombard has done a terrific job at keeping that ball down.
- 1:57:56As you can see, he's had only four fly balls to the outfield.
- 1:58:02The score, Red Sox one run on four hits.
- 1:58:06The Cardinals, no run on two hits.
- 1:58:09The first hitter, Mike Shannon.
- 1:58:11Kim?
- 1:58:13Okay, Pee-wee, Shannon has fouled Elston Howard in the batter's box
- 1:58:17and in the fifth inning struck out.
- 1:58:24Right-handed batter stepping into the box.
- 1:58:26Javier is on deck and Maxville is due up third.
- 1:58:31Elston Howard, the Red Sox catcher, sends out the sign.
- 1:58:35Here's the first pitch of the eighth inning.
- 1:58:37Curve is inside, ball one.
- 1:58:40The Red Sox have made a defensive change,
- 1:58:43and Jose Tarnable has gone to right field replacing Ken Harrelson.
- 1:58:54Lomborg, a bit more deliberate now than he was earlier.
- 1:58:59Right-hander kicks and fires low and outside, ball two.
- 1:59:09Boston leads one to nothing.
- 1:59:11This is the eighth inning.
- 1:59:20Big right-hander looks into Howard and has his sign.
- 1:59:24Here's his two-nothing pitch.
- 1:59:26Ground ball, Petrocelli to his left, has it.
- 1:59:28Throws to first base and gets his man.
- 1:59:31Shannon grounds to Petrocelli, who went to his left near the bag at second
- 1:59:36and threw him out at first.
- 1:59:37There is one out in the cardinal eighth, and the batter is Pullian Javier,
- 1:59:43who has had a tremendous series at the plate and in the field.
- 1:59:48Elston Howard goes to the mound to talk to Jim Lomborg.
- 1:59:52Javier has grounded to the pitcher in this game and fouled to third baseman Joe Foy.
- 1:59:57The Red Sox have a one-to-nothing lead.
- 2:00:00There is one man out in the last half of the eighth inning with nobody on.
- 2:00:08Lomborg into the windup, the pitch.
- 2:00:11Ground ball, Petrocelli to his right, juggles it, and safe at first base is Javier.
- 2:00:19We'll wait word from the official scorer on that one as Rico Petrocelli went to the hole
- 2:00:26to make the grab, and it is rolled an error on the Boston shortstop.
- 2:00:35And now we're going to get a pinch hitter.
- 2:00:39Dave Ricketts is coming up the bat for Daniel Maxfield.
- 2:00:49Ricketts, a switch-hitting catcher, will be up there left-handed
- 2:00:54with a runner at first and one out in the eighth.
- 2:00:57Boston ahead one-to-nothing.
- 2:01:02Petrocelli on the first out of the inning went to his left, and this time on Javier
- 2:01:10went to his right to try to get the ball toward the hole, and in his anxiety to make the throw, juggle the ball.
- 2:01:20Ricketts in there, left-handed batter with a closed stance, throw over to first, and the runner is back safely.
- 2:01:34Ricketts has gone 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter in this series.
- 2:01:38The pitch to him is a fastball outside, ball one.
- 2:01:50On deck is Phil Gagliano to bat for Washburn.
- 2:02:01The Red Sox infield at double-play depth, one out and one on in the eighth.
- 2:02:05Boston ahead one-nothing. The pitch, Ricketts takes it low and outside, ball two.
- 2:02:16And now the partisan St. Louis crowd ready to roar on every pitch down on the Boston dugout.
- 2:02:23Red Sox manager Dick Williams, who's done a brilliant job with this ball club, pacing back and forth.
- 2:02:33Two balls, no strikes. The set, the pitch.
- 2:02:36High pop foul outside of third, may be out of play.
- 2:02:39Boyd back can't make a play. It's into the lower seats, two and one.
- 2:02:44Petracelli and Jastramski also on the general vicinity, but the ball is a couple of rows back in.
- 2:02:51And the count is two balls, one strike on Ricketts.
- 2:03:06Left-handed batter digging in close at the plate.
- 2:03:10The set by Jim Lomborg, the look to it first base.
- 2:03:14The 2-1 pitch, high and outside, ball three.
- 2:03:20Three balls, one strike.
- 2:03:23One out and one on in the eighth. The Red Sox one and the Cardinals nothing.
- 2:03:35One run, four hits, one error for Boston.
- 2:03:38No runs, two hits and one error for St. Louis.
- 2:03:42Lomborg leans in and gets the sign from Howard.
- 2:03:45The set, the pitch. Ground ball, Scott juggles it, picks it up and runs over and tags first.
- 2:03:52The runner moves to second.
- 2:03:55It will go first baseman unassisted.
- 2:03:58Scott, who is very adept at the three-six double play, three-six-three double play, juggle the ball momentarily.
- 2:04:05Lomborg was over to cover, but he made the play himself at first base.
- 2:04:10Javier moves to second and now Phil Gagliano, utility infielder,
- 2:04:19a teammate of Tim McCarvers at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tennessee,
- 2:04:25will come up to bat with Javier on second and two out in the eighth.
- 2:04:30And Javier is the first St. Louis man baserunner to reach second base in this game.
- 2:04:37Boston has a 1-0 lead and Dick Williams, the Red Sox manager,
- 2:04:43is walking now out of the dugout toward the mound.
- 2:04:48At the mound, Elston Howard, Mike Andrews and Jim Lomborg.
- 2:04:55Ray Washburn with Gagliano batting for him is out of the action after working two innings
- 2:05:02and he allowed no runs, one hit, gave up no walks, had two strikeouts.
- 2:05:09A conference at the mound.
- 2:05:12We have not been informed of anyone warming up on the Boston bullpen, which we cannot see,
- 2:05:18but it has been customary in the series to show on the scoreboard that someone is warming up.
- 2:05:27The conference is over and Williams is going, I'm sure, right down to the end with his ace,
- 2:05:35the man who won 22 games for him this season.
- 2:05:40Williams going back into the dugout.
- 2:05:45Pommeyer at second, two out in the eighth inning, 1-0 Boston.
- 2:05:48Gagliano at the plate.
- 2:05:53Lomborg getting set.
- 2:05:57The pitch, over at the knees for a strike called.
- 2:06:01Good sinking fastball.
- 2:06:09Pommeyer leads away from second.
- 2:06:11Petrocelli trying to keep him close.
- 2:06:13Here's the pitch, fly ball into very short left field, Petrocelli back,
- 2:06:17Foy back, Rico calls, he's got it, and the Red Sox are out of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:22As Gagliano pops up the short, and so in the eighth, there were no runs, no hits,
- 2:06:28one error and one man left on second.
- 2:06:31At the end of eight full innings of play in St. Louis, Boston leads it 1-0.
- 2:06:41It's what's up front that counts.
- 2:06:49And up front ahead of the filter.
- 2:06:56Only Winston has the good, good taste.
- 2:07:01That comes from fill to blend.
- 2:07:05Fill to blend means flying tobaccos for the best taste yet.
- 2:07:10That's why Winston is America's largest selling cigarette.
- 2:07:17It's out front because up front only Winston has filter blend.
- 2:07:22Choice golden tobaccos specially selected for the best taste in filtered cigarettes.
- 2:07:31Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.
- 2:07:37Winston.
- 2:07:40If you've grown up around here, chances are you take Saratoga Vichy for granted.
- 2:07:54Well don't.
- 2:07:56What you're being so blase about happens to be one of the most extraordinary natural products in all the world.
- 2:08:02People send for it from all over, both for its curious taste and for that remarkably long-lived carbonation
- 2:08:09that the Vichy people are always talking about.
- 2:08:12Saratoga Vichy, the only mixer we know of that people built a city just to be near.
- 2:08:18WGYWGFM is connected.
- 2:08:23Reese in St. Louis. It's the ninth inning. Ron Willis is pitching now for St. Louis.
- 2:08:28His first pitch to Scott goes by McCarver for ball one.
- 2:08:32Eddie Bressoux has gone to shortstop in place of Dale Maxville.
- 2:08:36Bressoux will bat in the ninth position in the order and Willis will bat in the number eight spot.
- 2:08:41Red Sox lead one-nothing. Scott takes a pitch low and away for a ball.
- 2:08:46George struck out in the second but got the first base on a wild pitch on the third strike.
- 2:08:52And in the third inning, he flied to right field, hit into a 4-6-3 double play in the sixth on a brilliant play by Javier.
- 2:09:00Here's the pitch. Swung on and missed. Two balls, one strike.
- 2:09:05Smith will be next and then Petrocelli.
- 2:09:08Willis was the workhorse of the Cardinal bullpen during the 1967 season.
- 2:09:13Time after time, he came in to stop the opposition cold.
- 2:09:18The pitch to Scott is low and away and the count is three and one.
- 2:09:21Red Sox one. Cardinal is nothing in the ninth inning.
- 2:09:30Willis, a right-hander, winds and throws. Scott takes a strike called on the outside corner of the knees.
- 2:09:37During one stretch in July and August when he appeared in 15 games, 21 in the third innings, Willis did not allow a run.
- 2:09:47Right-hander kicks and fires and the pitch is outside, ball four.
- 2:09:53Scott leads off the Boston ninth by drawing a base on balls.
- 2:09:57That is the third walk of St. Louis pitching today. Carlton, the starting pitcher, walked two.
- 2:10:04Carlton and Washburn both have pitched very well and Jim Lahnborg, of course, has been tremendous for Boston.
- 2:10:13Reggie Smith at the plate.
- 2:10:18He has flied to center, popped a short and popped a second.
- 2:10:25Right-hander Willis at the belt. Third baseman Shannon up the line.
- 2:10:29Smith takes a strike called on the inside corner at the belt.
- 2:10:34In the last half of the ninth inning, the Cardinals will start at the top of the order with Lou Brock.
- 2:10:46Willis ready.
- 2:10:49The pitch. Smith swings and misses. Strike two.
- 2:11:00Reggie Smith hit 241 batting left-handed, 268 as a right-handed hitter during the year, led the Red Sox in stolen bases.
- 2:11:11Here's the pitch to him. Lines went down. The left field line might be foul. It isn't. It's a fair ball.
- 2:11:16Scott is around second. He's digging for third. Smith into second. Runners at second and third and nobody out on the Boston ninth inning.
- 2:11:24Reggie Smith, a left-handed batter, going to the opposite field. Lines one to left for a double.
- 2:11:31Moving Scott around to third. And the Red Sox in the ninth have runners at second and third with nobody out.
- 2:11:38And the batter is Rico Petracelli.
- 2:11:42Petracelli has flied to right, was robbed by Shannon on a brilliant play in the fourth, called out on strikes in the seventh, and he's going to get an intentional walk.
- 2:11:53There is ball one. This will load the bases. An intentional walk. Elston Howard is due up next for Boston.
- 2:12:03Now with ball two to count, the pitching coach of the Cardinals, Billy Muppet, is walking out to the mound.
- 2:12:12This is a most unusual situation at this point in a ball game where a man has started to get an intentional pass.
- 2:12:22Lameb and Jackson are warming up out on the St. Louis bullpen.
- 2:12:28Two balls, no strikes to count on Petracelli. Scott at third base and Smith on second.
- 2:12:34The Red Sox have a one-to-nothing lead, and we're in the ninth inning of play.
- 2:12:43Petracelli now moves back as Elston Howard wants to talk with him about something.
- 2:12:53And now they'll continue the intentional pass. There's ball three.
- 2:13:05And ball four. So the bases are loaded, and Howard is coming up.
- 2:13:13Elston has hit into a force play, fouled to Maris in fairly deep right, and bounced to the pitcher.
- 2:13:21Three men on, nobody out in the ninth inning for the Red Sox. They lead one to nothing.
- 2:13:28Willis winds and throws. The pitch is outside and low, ball one.
- 2:13:36Howard steps out of the box and looks down toward Eddie Papowski.
- 2:13:41And now Muppet, the pitching coach of the Cardinals, is on his way back out again.
- 2:13:49He wants to talk to Ron Willis.
- 2:14:00McCarver at the mound along with Muppet and Willis.
- 2:14:08The count, ball one to Elston Howard. The Red Sox, one run, five hits, one error.
- 2:14:15St. Louis, no runs, two hits and one error.
- 2:14:19The bases loaded in the ninth inning for the Red Sox with nobody out.
- 2:14:26And the long conference continues at the mound.
- 2:14:35And it looks to me like the new pitcher, I see him coming in out of the right field bullpen out there.
- 2:14:40Looks to me like it's Jack LeMaeve, a right-hander.
- 2:14:44That's the case, Pee-wee, and of course a former member of the Boston Red Sox among other teams.
- 2:14:52So Jack, who is a native of Massachusetts from up Springfield Way, is taking a long walk in from the bullpen
- 2:15:01as Ron Willis has pitched to three men, walked two of them and given up a double.
- 2:15:07He is responsible for all free baserunners as LeMaeve is walking in now from the bullpen.
- 2:15:16For anyone who might have joined us late, there has been only one run scored in this game.
- 2:15:23The Red Sox gutted in the third when Foy with one out singled a left.
- 2:15:28Andrew sacrificed him to second. Harrelson singled him home.
- 2:15:33We pause here 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:15:38Your radio has not gone cuckoo.
- 2:15:43That's merely the sound of Saratoga Vichy and its long-lasting fizz.
- 2:15:47The story behind that fizz is even stranger than the sound.
- 2:15:51You see, nature carbonates Saratoga Vichy, giving it a perky little fizz with incredible staying power.
- 2:15:58It keeps drinks fresh far longer than club soda or any of the imitation Vichys.
- 2:16:04Saratoga, the authentic Vichy in the yellow label.
- 2:16:08WGYWGFM is connected.
- 2:16:11This is Ken Coleman along with Pee Wee Reese at Bush Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.
- 2:16:16We're in the ninth inning. The Red Sox have one run, five hits and one error.
- 2:16:21The Cardinals no runs, two hits and one error.
- 2:16:25The Red Sox have the bases loaded with nobody out in the ninth.
- 2:16:29The count is ball one to Elston Howard.
- 2:16:32And Jack Lemay has just come in to do the pitching for the Cardinals.
- 2:16:37He has finished taking his eight warm-up throws.
- 2:16:41Now McCarver hollers something out to him.
- 2:16:44The Cardinal infield is in.
- 2:16:47Eddie Popowski, the third-phase coach, was over to the dugout and now is saying something to Scott on third.
- 2:16:54The plate umpire, Runge, wants Lemay to be absolutely sure that he knows that it's one ball and no strikes.
- 2:17:05And he so indicates.
- 2:17:08Jack is ready now.
- 2:17:11Infield in at the rim of the grass and here's the pitch.
- 2:17:15Gets away but not far enough for any advance and the count goes to ball two.
- 2:17:19McCarver making a good stop and a low outside pitch. It got about eight feet away from him.
- 2:17:25And Tim scampered back to get it. No advance by Scott at third.
- 2:17:30So the count goes to two balls and no strikes on Howard.
- 2:17:33On deck for Boston is Jim Lomborg, the pitcher.
- 2:17:42Lemay looks in and gets the sign.
- 2:17:44Right hander works.
- 2:17:46Swung on and missed. Strike one.
- 2:17:48He's taking a good hard cut at the ball.
- 2:17:53Plate umpire, Runge, dusting off home plate.
- 2:17:58Two balls and one strike.
- 2:18:02The ninth inning, the Red Sox won. The Cardinals nothing.
- 2:18:11Lemay into the windup and the pitch.
- 2:18:14There's a fly ball into short right field. Scott tags up.
- 2:18:18It is a base hit. Here comes Scott Holm.
- 2:18:22He is safe. Smith is coming. He is safe.
- 2:18:25And over to third base is Petrocelli. Boston leads three nothing.
- 2:18:29A pop fly down the right field line.
- 2:18:32Maris made a great try and then a very hard throw and Smith was right behind Scott who scored first.
- 2:18:41And the ball as it came into McCarver was apparently just momentarily bobbled
- 2:18:48and Smith had a chance to get in with the third Boston run.
- 2:18:52Red Sox take a three nothing lead.
- 2:18:55There are runners at first and third with nobody out on a blue single to right field by Elston Howard.
- 2:19:01Petrocelli on third base and Howard on first.
- 2:19:06Ken, that was a big base hit by Elston Howard. The ball was not hit hard.
- 2:19:10It was kind of a dying quail as we said. Roger Maris made a great play.
- 2:19:14He had a good shot at Reggie Smith. The throw was a little bit high.
- 2:19:18And Reggie Smith knocked McCarver over a little bit.
- 2:19:21But with Brock and the top of that batting order coming up, what a big time to get two runs.
- 2:19:26And they're still not out of the inning.
- 2:19:28Well the word is now that Maris was charged with an error on the throw.
- 2:19:34So Howard gets one run batted in.
- 2:19:42It looked like they might have been trying to hit a ball player there for a minute, did we?
- 2:19:46All of a sudden Mr. LeMabe got the baseball back on the mound.
- 2:19:50Here's Larnborg up with runners at first and third. The infield still in for St. Louis.
- 2:19:56LeMabe gets the sign from McCarver.
- 2:20:00The pitch is swung on and missed. Larnborg, as he has done several times over the season,
- 2:20:06looked like he might be going to punt.
- 2:20:08But then suddenly took a three-quarter cut at the ball and missed it. Strike one.
- 2:20:14Petracelli is on third. Howard on first.
- 2:20:21The pitch is a strike called on the outside corner at the knees. Two strikes.
- 2:20:26Boston leading 3-0 in the ninth. Runners at first and third and nobody out.
- 2:20:31Howard's fly ball was a little looper that was not more than five feet inside the line and fairly shallow right.
- 2:20:38Maris coming in on the ball. Scott had tagged up. But then when he saw it was caught, he came home.
- 2:20:44Smith with his great speed scored. LeMabe was ready to pitch and did, but time was called, so it doesn't count.
- 2:20:51Two strikes to count on Larnborg.
- 2:20:55Smith was running right up Scott's back as he was coming down.
- 2:21:00Scotty being a little more cautious on the play than Reggie.
- 2:21:04Now LeMabe is ready. The pitch outside in Lowell one and two.
- 2:21:11The two runs are charged to Ron Willis, who is also responsible for the runner at third base, Rico Petracelli.
- 2:21:21One ball, two strikes to count. Boston leading 3-0. This is the top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:21:27The pitch from LeMabe to Larnborg is low and away and it's two and two.
- 2:21:34Larnborg has been working on a thread all afternoon. A one-to-nothing lead, which he got back in the third.
- 2:21:41Now gets a two-run cushion in the ninth.
- 2:21:49LeMabe sets and delivers. The pitch is swung on and fouled and the bat goes all the way down to the third base bag.
- 2:21:56Petracelli, who is on third, and Shannon both have to duck out of the way.
- 2:22:01And we must tell you that this is something new for Larnborg. He has not been doing this all year.
- 2:22:07Not during the hot days of July and August, but oddly enough he's done it here in the World Series.
- 2:22:14Two and two. Jack LeMabe goes to the rosin bag.
- 2:22:28Cepeda, Javier, Bressoux, and Shannon up tight. The pitch low and outside, three and two.
- 2:22:39The Boston Red Sox trying to take the World Series back to Fenway Park.
- 2:22:45They have a three-to-nothing lead in the ninth inning.
- 2:22:51Runners at first and third.
- 2:22:57LeMabe on the rubber looking in for the sign.
- 2:23:01Goes to the belt, the pause, and the pitch. But it popped up. In foul territory it can't be reached.
- 2:23:08Cepeda and LeMabe both came running for it and couldn't get there.
- 2:23:13LeMabe looked like he might have pulled a muscle going after it, but he is limping slightly as he goes back toward the mound.
- 2:23:20It was a two-strike foul, and that will do it for Larnborg as he is a strikeout victim on the foul front try on the third strike.
- 2:23:30Now Red Shandins, the Cardinal Manager, goes out because, as I said, it was off the first base side.
- 2:23:35And Cepeda and LeMabe were both running as hard as they could for the ball, and LeMabe apparently pulled a muscle.
- 2:23:41And I think Jack will take, he will take a couple of warm-up throws.
- 2:23:47Joe Foy will be up next. There is one out. There are runners at first and third.
- 2:23:53The Red Sox lead by a score of three to nothing.
- 2:24:02LeMabe is okay. Red Shandins going back into the Cardinal dugout.
- 2:24:07And Foy up. Foy struck out in the first, single to left and scored a run in the third,
- 2:24:13fly deep to center in the fifth, struck out in the eighth inning, and has made one very fine defensive play at third base.
- 2:24:22Boston, three runs, six hits, one error. St. Louis, no runs, two hits and two errors.
- 2:24:31LeMabe delivers. Foy tries to check the swing, gets a strike.
- 2:24:39One strike on the Red Sox third baseman, Joe Foy.
- 2:24:43Two years ago, one of the top men in the International League, a rookie with Boston last year.
- 2:24:52Joe has played part-time this season.
- 2:24:56The pitch to Joe is outside and low. One ball, one strike.
- 2:25:04Last year, Foy led the team in runs, I'm talking of 66 now, with 97, in triples with eight, and in walks with 91.
- 2:25:15One ball, one strike, one out, two on on the ninth, three nothing. The Red Sox lead the Cardinals.
- 2:25:22Jack LeMabe gets the sign from Tim McCarver in pitches, swung on and missed, one and two.
- 2:25:38In the last half of the ninth, Lou Brock, Kurt Flood, and Roger Maris are the scheduled St. Louis batters,
- 2:25:45as the cards go to the top of their order.
- 2:25:49Here's the pitch, breaking ball low and away, two and two the count.
- 2:25:5454,575 on hand.
- 2:25:59That's been the total for the past three days here at beautiful Bush Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.
- 2:26:09Foy waiting on LeMabe.
- 2:26:12Holes the bat stationary, now cocks it, the pitch.
- 2:26:17Picks it off, stays alive at two-two.
- 2:26:21The Red Sox got a run in the third on Foy's single, a sacrifice by Andrews, a single by Harrelson.
- 2:26:28And here in the ninth, Scott led off with a walk, Smith doubled a left, Petrocelli got an intentional walk,
- 2:26:34Howard singled a right to score Scott, and Smith scored on a throwing error by Maris.
- 2:26:40There are runners at first and third, there's one down.
- 2:26:44Here's the pitch, Foy takes it outside and low, three and two.
- 2:26:49On deck for Boston, Mike Andrews.
- 2:27:04LeMabe leans in and gets the sign from McCarver.
- 2:27:08Here's the pitch, Foy swings and misses, runner going to second,
- 2:27:12here comes the runner home, they got him in a trap.
- 2:27:15McCarver throws down to third baseman Shannon, back into LeMabe covering,
- 2:27:19they're chasing Petrocelli back to a third.
- 2:27:22Now it's McCarver who puts the tag line on the ball.
- 2:27:26The Red Sox are out as they try to delay double steal here in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:27:32They got Petrocelli in the run down.
- 2:27:35Foy had swung on the three-two pitch for the second out on the strikeout, and that does it.
- 2:27:40Boston comes up with a pair, and so after eight and one-half innings the score is Boston 3 and St. Louis nothing.
- 2:27:50Say if you're swinging for a new set of snow tires this winter, don't be struck out by a fast-selling pitch.
- 2:27:56Make the sure hit at your straight-talking VF Goodrich dealer.
- 2:28:00Ask him about the BFG Trailmaker Silver Town.
- 2:28:03It's the hardest-hitting snow tire on the road,

- 2:28:17Tough inside and tough outside, yet you'll never hear it growl.
- 2:28:21It rides quiet on wet or dry roads.
- 2:28:24Trailmaker Silver Town snow tires have stopping power too, and if the going gets really skittish,
- 2:28:30you can have your trailmakers with steel safety studs.
- 2:28:34There's no money down with a BF Goodrich Choice Charge account, and installation is free.
- 2:28:39So make a hit with power-driving BF Goodrich Trailmaker Silver Town snow tires.
- 2:28:44Get them now from your straight-talking BF Goodrich dealer.
- 2:28:49That's the bottom half of ninth inning, the last chance for the Cardinals,
- 2:28:53and you better believe that Jim Lombard, the big pitcher for the Red Sox,
- 2:28:57was glad to see those two runs put up there in the ninth inning.
- 2:29:00Because he has a tough man to face here, a leadoff hitter, Lou Brock.
- 2:29:05He'll be followed by Kirk Flood and Roger Masson to tell you all about it, Ken Cole.
- 2:29:09Okay, Pee-wee, and for anyone who's scoring, when four struck out and they tried to delay double-steel,
- 2:29:16which the Red Sox have tried any number of times this year, well, we'll give it to you in a moment.
- 2:29:22Here's Brock, 0 for 3.
- 2:29:25Outfield playing straight away. Lombard throws, the pitch is inside and low ball one.
- 2:29:33On that last out, it went 2-4-2-5-1-2.
- 2:29:44Brock is fly deep to right, struck out in the third, bounced to first his last time.
- 2:29:49Hits the ground ball out to its second. He enters in, up with it, throws to first.
- 2:29:53One time, there's one out in the ninth inning.
- 2:29:57One out in the last half of the ninth inning at Bush Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.
- 2:30:03And the batter is Kirk Flood.
- 2:30:11Flood has grounded to third, bounced to first, grounded to second.
- 2:30:16The Cardinals with two hits, an infield hit by Maxville in the third,
- 2:30:20a single to right in the fourth by Maris.
- 2:30:24The pitch outside and low ball one.
- 2:30:31Lombard had the first eight men to face him, then a base hit.
- 2:30:37There's a ground ball to third. Coy has it, throws over to Scott, two out in the ninth inning.
- 2:30:44And the batter will be Maris.
- 2:30:46He had the last St. Louis hit in the fourth.
- 2:30:50And then Lombard got, let's see, 2-3-5-8-11-12 in a row before Javier reached on an error.
- 2:30:59Then got the last four men, and here's Maris.
- 2:31:02One for three for Roger.
- 2:31:05Two out, the Cardinal ninth, Boston ahead, three to nothing.
- 2:31:10The pitch is in there for a strike called.
- 2:31:16The outfield playing toward right for Boston.
- 2:31:19Lombard into the windup. Big right-hander throws.
- 2:31:23Fly ball hit deep into right field. Going back to the wall is Turnable.
- 2:31:27He leads his time for a home run.
- 2:31:45With two men out in the ninth, Roger Maris has hit a home run over the pitch in right field.
- 2:31:52About 345 feet away, and the score is 3-1 Boston.
- 2:31:59As Sepeda comes to the plate.
- 2:32:02Sepeda has struck out swinging, fouled to left, and granted a short.
- 2:32:07That's the first run that Lombard has given up in 17 and two-thirds innings of pitching in this series.
- 2:32:13Sepeda fouls the first pitch back strike one.
- 2:32:17The last man to pitch two shutouts in a series was Sandy Kopacs in 1965.
- 2:32:24The series record is three shutouts by Kristi Mathieson of the Giants in 1905 against the Athletics.
- 2:32:31And Lombard had two men out in the ninth when Maris just laced one out of here.
- 2:32:37One strike to Sepeda, the pitch. Curve in for a strike called. Two strikes.
- 2:32:43That's the sixth series home run for Roger Maris.
- 2:32:49Two strikes to count on Sepeda.
- 2:32:52Lombard throws. The pitch is lined.
- 2:32:55Howl outside of third.
- 2:32:58Foy almost made a great backhanded catch of the ball.
- 2:33:01Could not quite reach out there to get it as Sepeda hit it hard, but howled down the third base line.
- 2:33:09Two strikes to count on the baby bull. Two men out, nobody on.
- 2:33:13Last of the ninth inning. The Red Sox lead the Cardinals. It is three to one.
- 2:33:19Lombard into the windup. And the pitch.
- 2:33:22Lined down to one hop to Foy. Throws over to first base and the Red Sox win it.
- 2:33:28And George Scott takes the ball and fires it out toward left field.
- 2:33:32As the Boston Red Sox keep the series going.
- 2:33:36Once again winning when they have to as Sepeda hit a hard shot to Foy who took it on a short trap hop and threw over to George Scott for the out.
- 2:33:46The final score, the Red Sox three and the Cardinals one.
- 2:33:50And we'll be back in just a moment with a resume of today's game.
- 2:33:55The 1968 Chrysler is here.
- 2:34:01No car moves or looks quite like it.
- 2:34:05Disappearing headlights.
- 2:34:11440 cubic inch V8.
- 2:34:14Chrysler.
- 2:34:16Only car in its class that makes no smaller version.
- 2:34:25The 68 Chrysler with new options like an eight-track stereo tape system, AM, FM, multiplex radio.
- 2:34:33That's why so many people are making their move up to Chrysler.
- 2:34:39Make your move. Move up to Chrysler 68.
- 2:34:47See your local Chrysler dealer. Make your move up to Chrysler now.
- 2:34:57At Bush Memorial Stadium in St. Louis in a dramatic baseball game this afternoon, Jim Lomborg has pitched the Red Sox back into it.
- 2:35:08And the series will now move to game six at Fenway Park in Boston on Wednesday.
- 2:35:14Lomborg today pitched brilliantly in a clutch ball game, a game that the Red Sox had to win and he was running on a one-run lead most of the way.
- 2:35:26Boston had three runs on six hits and one error. St. Louis one run, three hits and two errors.
- 2:35:33Lomborg won it and the losing pitcher was a young man who also pitched a great ball game this afternoon in the six innings he worked, young Steve Carleton.
- 2:35:43But it was one-to-nothing Boston until the ninth inning when the Red Sox managed to come up with two runs and they needed them as it turned out.
- 2:35:52Because Rod Jimaras with two out the ninth banged out a home run.
- 2:35:57So in what has been an incredible baseball season, we have quite a ball game here in St. Louis today as the cardiac kids, as they call them up in New England,
- 2:36:10have come up with a tremendous performance in beating the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:36:15Pee-wee? Well Ken, as we said at the start of this show, the Boston Red Sox have been counted out, they were counted out during the American League penned race several times.
- 2:36:26They fought back. They won two big games on Saturday and Sunday to stay alive. They were down in this series by three to one.
- 2:36:33Only three other clubs have done it in World Series play and if anyone can do it, I believe the Boston Red Sox can do it.
- 2:36:40Their big pitcher, Jim Lombard, came through today with a fine performance.
- 2:36:45And what a two big runs that was in the top half of the ninth inning. Ron Willis came in, got a little while, he walked George Scott, got two strikes on Reggie Smith,
- 2:36:54made a good pitch on Reggie Smith with a fastball out over that plate. But Smith slapped that ball out in left field for a big double and they came up with two runs.
- 2:37:04Roger Maris hit a home run which would have tied it up in the bottom half of the ninth inning. But the score, Red Sox three, the Cardinals won.
- 2:37:13We want to express our appreciation to our director Len Dillon and our audio supervisor from KSD in St. Louis, John Olke.
- 2:37:22And we'll be back with a final look at today's score in just a moment.
- 2:37:26Flair lets you write the way you feel. Flair can write angry. Flair can write happy.
- 2:37:37But Flair, very, very small. Or ten feet tall. Flair is different. No ball point, no pen point.
- 2:37:47Flair has a smooth nylon tip that stays firm, stays sharp. Flair, Flair, Flair, by Papermate.
- 2:37:56And then while you're at it, why not try a can of new Gillette Foamy shaving cream.
- 2:38:01You know Gillette packs a mountain of smooth shaving comfort into every can of new Gillette Foamy.
- 2:38:07You get billows of creamy rich foamy lather that really soaks deep down into your beard, keeps it soft and moist right through your shave.
- 2:38:16So for a shave as close as this year's American League pennant race, remember, nobody makes a lather like Foamy, so moist, so rich, so creamy.
- 2:38:26Nobody makes a lather like Gillette.
- 2:38:32Once again, the Boston Red Sox have taken the fifth game of the 1967 World Series by downing the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1.
- 2:38:42Jim Larnborg, the winning pitcher in this ball game for Boston, and Pee Wee speculating now.
- 2:38:50I believe that Dick Williams is planning to come back with young Gary Wazlowski, who pitched brilliantly here in relief the other day, as his starting pitcher in Wednesday's game.
- 2:39:01And I would assume probably Dick Hughes will go to the mound again for the Cardinals.
- 2:39:06I believe you're right, Ken. I got a big kick out of Dick Williams last night, the manager of the Red Sox, when they were talking about now that their backs up against the wall.
- 2:39:15And he said, I want to tell you one thing, that we've been in this position all year.
- 2:39:19The fans in Boston who have been so great all year are going to see three more games. They're going to see one more game on television.
- 2:39:26That's the day Larnborg will win it, and they'll see two more up in Boston.
- 2:39:30Now Wazlowski would look great, as you said, Ken, the other day. And what I'm looking forward to, if the Red Sox can win that sixth game, won't that be a battle between Larnborg and Bob Gibson in that seventh game?
- 2:39:42Oh, what a game that would be.
- 2:39:44This broadcast was authorized under broadcast rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball, solely for the entertainment of our listening audience,

- 2:40:02Well, that wraps up the fifth game of the 1967 World Series.
- 2:40:07Be with us again on Wednesday at Fenway Park for the sixth game of the World Series, when your hosts again will be Winston.
- 2:40:15Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should.
- 2:40:18B.F. Goodrich, the straight-talk tire people.
- 2:40:21Chrysler Corporation, makers of Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Imperial, and Dodge trucks.
- 2:40:28And the Gillette Tecmatic Razor, ask your face about it.
- 2:40:33The final score once again in the fifth game of the World Series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the Boston Red Sox 3 and the St. Louis Cardinals 1.
- 2:40:43Music
