- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:18We are in the book of Isaiah, and Isaiah is a prophet in about
- 0:23the century, century and a half before the southern Kingdom of
- 0:27Judah was brought into exile by Babylon.
- 0:31And so Isaiah during his lifetime was preaching against
- 0:35the sins and evils of both the nation of Judah and the nations
- 0:41around Judah, as they were ignoring the Lord and His way
- 0:45and were instead just doing whatever they wanted to do.
- 0:48And so many of the past, oh, probably 7 or 8 chapters have
- 0:56dealt specifically with nations around Judah.
- 1:01So we looked at Babylon, Assyria, Moab, and then today
- 1:06we're going to look at the nation of Aram or Syria with its
- 1:11capital city of Damascus. We're going to look a little bit
- 1:14at the judgment on the northern Kingdom of Israel, and then the
- 1:21judgment of God against the nations in general.
- 1:24Next episode, we're going to look at God's judgments against
- 1:28Egypt, and that's going to be, honestly, a really interesting
- 1:32episode and looking forward to that.
- 1:34But let's begin the day with Isaiah chapter 17 and verse #1A
- 1:38pronouncement concerning Damascus.
- 1:40Look, Damascus is no longer a city.
- 1:43It has become a ruined heap. The cities of Arar are
- 1:48abandoned. They will be places for flocks.
- 1:52They will lie down without fear. So where there was thriving
- 1:57metropolis cities, now there's just going to be farmers and
- 2:01sheep that go through those areas.
- 2:04Verse #3 The fortress disappears from Ephraim and a Kingdom from
- 2:09Damascus. The remnants of Arum will be
- 2:12like the splendor of the Israelites.
- 2:15This is the declaration of Yahweh of Heaven's armies.
- 2:18So here where the northern Kingdom of Israel had allied
- 2:22itself with Arum against the southern Kingdom of Judah, which
- 2:27was something that God said was evil and wrong, that there would
- 2:31be a double edged, if you will, kind of sword against both Syria
- 2:38and Israel. That there would no longer be
- 2:42huge armies able to come and pillage and maraud through the
- 2:49Kingdom of Judah. Instead they would be brought
- 2:53down. They'd be a very humble group of
- 2:57people that would be there. Verse #4 On that day, the
- 3:01splendor of Jacob will fade. This is that northern Kingdom of
- 3:04Israel, and his healthy body will become emaciated.
- 3:08That is, that there is less population.
- 3:10There's not great military might.
- 3:12The cities aren't, you know, thriving and super busy.
- 3:16It just becomes a simpler place. Verse #5 It'll be as if a Reaper
- 3:22had gathered standing grain, his arm harvesting the heads of
- 3:25grain, and as if one had gleaned heads of grain in Riffian
- 3:28Valley. Only gleanings will be left in
- 3:31Israel as if an olive tree had been beaten, two or three olives
- 3:35at the very top of the tree, four or five on its fruitful
- 3:39branches. This is the declaration of
- 3:41Yahweh, the God of Israel. He says, you guys have forgotten
- 3:45me, and instead you have insisted on acts of military
- 3:51violence. And so there is going to be,
- 3:54there are going to be consequences as a result of this
- 3:57verse #7 on that day, people will look to their Maker and
- 4:01will turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
- 4:04They will not look to the altars they made with their hands or to
- 4:08the asherahs and shrines they made with their fingers.
- 4:11These would be what's called in the Bible the high places.
- 4:14So you would find a, you know, tall hill or mountain where
- 4:19there was a Grove set up, and you would offer sacrifices to,
- 4:24you know, some of the Canaanite gods or gods of the other
- 4:27nations. So these were places of false
- 4:29worship. The Asherahs is what those are
- 4:33also sometimes called on that day.
- 4:36Verse #9 Their strong cities will be like the abandoned woods
- 4:40and mountaintops that were abandoned because of the
- 4:43Israelites. There will be desolation, for
- 4:46you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and you failed
- 4:50to remember the rock of your strength.
- 4:53Therefore you will plant beautiful plants and set out
- 4:56cuttings from exotic vines. On the day that you plant, you
- 5:00will help them to grow, and in the morning you will help your
- 5:03seed to sprout, but the harvest will vanish.
- 5:06On the day of disease and incurable pain that there would
- 5:11be attempts to just go about life as as regular, there would
- 5:16be lots of effort put into bettering the nation.
- 5:21Here you have these plants from exotic vines and places that are
- 5:26beautiful and you're putting in work and you go, yes, this is
- 5:29going to all be fine, but God says no, there is judgment that
- 5:33is coming. So you can repent, you can turn,
- 5:35you can remember the God who is your salvation, the only one
- 5:39that gives you strength, or you can continue operating without
- 5:43Him and find out what is the end result.
- 5:47When you abandon life himself, all that is left is death and
- 5:52destruction and devastation. I love these descriptive words
- 5:56for God there in verse #10 He is the God of our salvation.
- 6:02Any hope of security was not found in Syria.
- 6:07It wasn't found in US Syria. It wasn't even found in the
- 6:11southern Kingdom of Judah. The one that Israel needed to be
- 6:14looking to was God because he was the one that would deliver
- 6:18them, as they found out over time, all of the false gods and
- 6:23local deities of the Canaanites and the Arameans, and then
- 6:28eventually the Assyrians and the Babylonians.
- 6:31These gods that they consulted, that they sacrificed to, that
- 6:34they worshipped, they were useless gods.
- 6:39Our God, Yahweh, Jesus Christ, He is the true God.
- 6:43He is the only one that we should be relying on.
- 6:47I want to highlight for us our salvation does not ultimately
- 6:51come through anything that we do.
- 6:55Like we can set up, you know, security cameras.
- 6:59But as I discovered in my life, that doesn't always mean that
- 7:03robbers will not come or that you will have full knowledge of
- 7:07what is happening at all times. I've told the story on here
- 7:10before about accidentally walking in on a robber.
- 7:14If you want to hear that story, you can look at the Tabernacle
- 7:17Michael talk episode on Psalm 3 and that is there for you.
- 7:22So the the you know, security cameras cannot guarantee you
- 7:28safety in life. Simply having like a loving
- 7:34spouse doesn't guarantee that you will have a wonderful
- 7:39marriage or that you will be able to have kids.
- 7:44Just having a, you know, 4 O 1K does not mean that you are going
- 7:49or having a great job that pays well does not mean that you are
- 7:52going to be financially stable and secure.
- 7:55Everything that we have in this world is up in the air and the
- 8:01only one that we should be turning to is the Lord.
- 8:05We can, especially nowadays, we don't put names to the spirit
- 8:13that we worship outside of God. We don't really do that.
- 8:18At least people in, you know, the old days, they were honest
- 8:22about it and they said, hey, I'm worshipping the God of or the
- 8:26goddess of fertility or, you know, financial stability for
- 8:31crops, agriculture, a God of War or a God of peace.
- 8:38And so I am scared of the possibility of war.
- 8:42And so I'm going to go to this temple and I'm going to, you
- 8:46know, either sacrifice an animal or give money to this particular
- 8:50temple so that I will have success in the war that I am
- 8:55fighting, or I will be able to have children because I went to
- 8:59the temple of Aphrodite or I'll find a spouse by going there.
- 9:05So often in our lives, we don't put a name to it, but if you
- 9:11will, our idols are things like, you know, whatever dating app
- 9:16that a person could use that it's not wrong at all to to use
- 9:22a a dating app, Obviously use a good one.
- 9:26You use one that that is put together for the right reasons
- 9:29that you aren't you aren't tempted towards bad behavior as
- 9:32a result of it. But some people can put their
- 9:35hope rather than and God, their ultimate hope could be OK.
- 9:40I think this app is going to keep me safe or for my financial
- 9:43stability. I trust in my job or I trust in
- 9:48my work ethic or in my 4 O 1K. And one of these things will
- 9:54give me financial stability. So I don't pray to God about my
- 9:58finances. I just kind of freak out about
- 10:01it a little bit and I work really hard and I put more money
- 10:04in and I'm hoping that that will sustain me instead of OK God,
- 10:11you know what I need to do and when I need to do it.
- 10:14You have priorities that you've laid out for me within your word
- 10:19as far as my finances go. God, would you help me to find
- 10:22my salvation, my wholeness, my future in you more than in any
- 10:31of these things or any of this stuff, these apps, these
- 10:35friends, God, you are the one that gives me meaning and
- 10:40purpose, safety and hope in this life.
- 10:45I, I know I could dive a little deeper into that, but I feel
- 10:49like that's that's where I'm supposed to stop for the moment.
- 10:53Verse #12 through 14 here at the very end of this chapter says
- 10:58this, Ah, the roar of many peoples.
- 11:01They roar like the roaring of the Seas, the raging of the
- 11:06nations. They rage like the rumble of
- 11:09rushing water, the nation's rage like the rumble of a huge
- 11:13torrent. He rebukes them and they flee
- 11:16far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills and like
- 11:22tumbleweeds before a Gale. In the evening, sudden terror
- 11:26before morning. It is gone.
- 11:29This is the fate of those who plunder us and the lot of those
- 11:33who ravage us. So here Isaiah portrays the
- 11:37nations of the world in a couple of ways.
- 11:40It's very tied in with Psalm one and two, and it's tied in with
- 11:43Genesis 1 says the nations are these chaos waters seeking to
- 11:48destroy and ruin life on the land.
- 11:52You can see there in verse 12, the roaring of the Seas, the
- 11:56rumble of rushing water. A huge torrent like this is the
- 12:00way that the nations are portrayed, is the chaos waters
- 12:05where no life is left after they come through.
- 12:08It's referencing Psalm one. Blessed is the man that does not
- 12:13walk in the counsel of the ungodly, or stand in the way of
- 12:15sinners, or sit in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is
- 12:18in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and
- 12:21night. He'll be like a tree planted by
- 12:23the rivers of water that brings forth his fruit in his season.
- 12:26His leaf also will not wither, and whatever he does will
- 12:28prosper. The wicked are not so, but are
- 12:32like the chaff which the wind drives away.
- 12:35And you can see that in verse 13.
- 12:37He rebukes them. They flee away, driven before
- 12:40the wind, like chaff on the hills, and like tumbleweeds
- 12:43before a Gale. And in Psalm 2, where we would
- 12:49read, Why do the nation's rage and the people's imagine vain or
- 12:54empty things? You can see that with the raging
- 12:58of the nation's in verse #12 and verse 13, the nation's rage.
- 13:04So here, thinking about God's Word, Isaiah's saying the
- 13:09nations want to destroy Israel, but God will be our safety.
- 13:13And even as he's been walking through all of these nations,
- 13:16there's Moab, there's against Judah, there is Israel, there's
- 13:23Syria, there's Moab, there's US Syria, there is Babylon, and
- 13:31we'll see next episode Egypt. All of these nations are
- 13:36surrounding them. Felicia, Canaan, all of these
- 13:40people groups were attacking and harming God's people.
- 13:44But what was ultimate, what was promised was God's promise to
- 13:49David of his people in the land forever enjoying his presence,
- 13:55his goodness, his guidance. Like we read in Isaiah chapter
- 13:582, that's the end goal. And so even though right now
- 14:04there's craziness and I and they could say I don't understand
- 14:08what's going on yet in God's sovereignty and because of God's
- 14:13promises, Isaiah says these nations are temporary because
- 14:18God's plan is eternal. Today in your life we will
- 14:22encounter crazy stuff, but the truth is that our promise from
- 14:28the Lord is eternal life. It is joy, it is presence with
- 14:32Him. And so we can believe and trust
- 14:36the word of our God. We don't have to live in fear.
- 14:40We don't have to live hopeless or despondent.
- 14:46Instead we can say, God, I believe your word.
- 14:49I believe what you say about that home that is awaiting me.
- 14:53God, I believe that I will be with you forever.
- 14:56God, I believe even what we read here in Isaiah about the future
- 14:59that we will experience reunited together, reconciled with all
- 15:04creation as we as we come back to earth, as we read last week
- 15:12the the new Jerusalem coming out of heaven.
- 15:15God has made His dwelling with mankind and what a day that that
- 15:19will be. And I can have faith in what God
- 15:22will do based on that day and knowing His plans towards me are
- 15:27for my good and for His glory. And so I can trust through the
- 15:32bumpy roads. I can trust on that steep drop
- 15:36of the roller coaster that God has me on.
- 15:38I can believe that there is still good.
- 15:45I can't remember which Psalm it is that says something along the
- 15:48lines of like, I would have fainted unless I believed in the
- 15:53goodness of the Lord in the land of the living and love, love
- 15:58that thought. Thank you for tuning in.
- 16:00I know a lot of these episodes that are walking through
- 16:04judgment and condemnation. It can be a little bit of a
- 16:08rough ride and so I am super thankful that you are sticking
- 16:12it out. Next episode we are going to
- 16:15look at Egypt, and Egypt is definitely, when you look at
- 16:21world history, a super interesting place even today as
- 16:24you see the pyramids. And so I'm looking forward to
- 16:29that study. See you next episode.
