- 0:00[ on-hold music] Welcome back to The Most Important Question today, where in just a couple minutes or less, we apply the Actually Pro-Life principles to a news headline and then help you answer the most important question, "What can I do?"
- 0:18[on-hold music] Maybe you've already heard about the one-year-old boy who was shot by a police officer 'cause his mom was accused of stealing diapers for him.
- 0:35Maybe you didn't, though. So in June, in a Walmart parking lot in Mississippi, a police officer fired three shots into a car that was pulling away.
- 0:44The police had been called about two women suspected of stealing diapers. In the front seat of the car, in his mother's arms, was a one-year-old boy, and we're gonna say his name. It's Cohen Wiley. Remember that.
- 0:56He was shot. He didn't die. He was killed. Two weeks ago, the Mississippi Attorney General's office announced it had finished looking into the whole thing, and they put out this statement.
- 1:07It's about three sentences, and it concludes with, "In this incident, the Attorney General's office found that the use of force was justified." And that's it.
- 1:16Because in Mississippi, only the Attorney General's office can put a police shooting in front of a grand jury. Nobody else can do that.
- 1:23So Attorney General, and we're gonna say her name here, too, Lynn Fitch, looked at it, didn't see enough evidence to ask a grand jury, declined prosecution, and they closed the case.
- 1:34The officer resigned a few days after he was cleared, but a spokesman for Mississippi's Department of Public Safety made sure to clarify that he remains certified as a police officer.
- 1:47No one in this country or anywhere should have to steal fucking diapers or food or have their water shut off or be murdered for trying to provide those things for themselves or their children.
- 1:59I know I keep harping on it, but the baseline for actually pro-life isn't very fucking high.
- 2:04You can donate diapers or breast milk or formula through our partners on whatcanido.earth, and you can also donate to the ACLU, which actually takes police departments to court. [on-hold music] Thanks for listening.
