- 1:33four from Hollywood. It's time off for Johnny Dollar. This is Hector mister
- 1:42Doll, Hector Hector Nirkley at the Drake Lee Arms Apartments. You were here
- 1:47night before last inquiring about the late mister monk Oh, yes, I remember.
- 1:51What can I do for you, mister Nrkley, Oh, it's really
- 1:53quite the other way around, all right. What can you do for me?
- 1:56Well, I can give you some very interesting information if you get why
- 2:00can't you give it to me on the phone, I'll tell you exactly why,
- 2:02mister Dollar, for the level of feed and why not. A month
- 2:07ago, the best friend I had in the world drove his car off a
- 2:09cliff into the Pacific and his body's still out there in the ocean somewhere.
- 2:13It's never been recovered. And it turns out he was eighty thousand dollars short
- 2:16in his accounts. I can't find the money, you know, the woman
- 2:19he was running around with before his death. I can't find out anything.
- 2:22And now if I want him, all right, I'll be there in thirty
- 2:24minutes tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the
- 2:37Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous freelance insurance Investigator, Yours truly,
- 2:43Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location in San Francisco to
- 3:00the home office Eternity Mutual Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the confidential
- 3:06matter expense account continued. Adam nine a dollar and seventy cents taxi from my
- 3:15hotel to the Drakenly Arms Apartments, a snooty high price joint where Ed Morgan
- 3:20had lived during the last four months of his life. Ed Morgan, a
- 3:23pipe and slippers bachelor who'd suddenly and strangely turned to champagne, cocktails and high
- 3:29living, who is head of an insurance claims office, had found a way
- 3:31of swindling his employer out of eighty thousand dollars in four months, and who
- 3:36died a month ago as mysteriously as he'd lived. This was the man who,
- 3:40at the moment was my assignment, who's past I was supposed to uncover.
- 3:45And he was also the man who'd been my lifelong friend. Good eating,
- 3:49mister dollar, A, you did make excellent time. Now, look
- 3:52if this turns out to be a run around, so help him out,
- 3:55all right, all right, just said you had some very important information that
- 3:58couldn't be discussed over the phone. Well it could have been discussed, of
- 4:00course, but well, this information has to do with one of our guests.
- 4:04Mister dollar, a certain lovely young widow whom you've seem most concerned about
- 4:09the last night, Nickie Barrett, quiet as she come back? Is she
- 4:11here? I'm afraid not? Then? What is it? First? I
- 4:14must ask you what your intentions are toward missus Barrett. Well, I'm not
- 4:17going to marry her. Please, I hardly thought you were. All right?
- 4:20Then, what's the point? Simply this? I happen to be in
- 4:24a position to put you in touch with missus Barrett. Do you know where
- 4:27she's hiding out? Hiding out? All right, I'll drop the implication you
- 4:30know where she is? I do, well, and let's have it.
- 4:32Why do you wish to find her? Because she's the only lead I've got
- 4:35on a Morgan case. She and Ed were thicker than thieves during the four
- 4:40months before his death, and she was with him the night he was killed
- 4:43earlier in the evening. At least are you going to have her arrested?
- 4:46No? No, I just want to ask her some questions. I've got
- 4:48no case against her a year at least, Mister Dollar, Can I depend
- 4:54upon you in one very important reciping What's that? Under no circumstances must you
- 4:59let missus Barret know that I told her where she is. What's the matter,
- 5:02afraid the board of directors would bust you to bell hop and strip off
- 5:05your guardina. That is not amusing nor too improbable. As a matter of
- 5:11fact, after all, the watchword of the draclely Arms is discretion. Yeah,
- 5:14well, all right, it's a deal. I won't tell her,
- 5:15of course. There is one more little detail, now, what Well,
- 5:19the last time you requested information from me, mister dollar, you were kind
- 5:23enough and generous enough. Really, this is a bit awkward. What is
- 5:29it acting? Is the Guardenia fun getting law. Well, you did say,
- 5:32as I recall, that it was merely an item in an expense account.
- 5:35All right, here's another twenty bucks now, thank you, sir.
- 5:40What about Nikki Barrett, Well, we just received a letter from missus Barrett.
- 5:44She asks that her mayor be forwarded to her in care of American Express,
- 5:47Panama City, Panama. It am ten twenty dollars gratuity. Itam eleven
- 5:56three hundred and eighty eight dollars and forty five cents hotels and telegrams. Since
- 6:00atts in San Francisco and playing fair to Panama, I sent wires ahead before
- 6:21I left the States. It wasn't until after I cleared customs and was heading
- 6:26for the American Express office, and I was certain the messages had produced any
- 6:30results. Yeah, you are, Senor Johnny Dollar from the STADUS. No,
- 6:35that's right, Capitan Garcia, the Panama Federal Police, as SUSO have
- 6:40released. AM glad to know your captain. I am honored, Senor.
- 6:44We have received a telegram and I have been instructed to cooperate with you very
- 6:48intensely. What it may take just that. Now about the woman I described
- 6:53in the telegram, the Senora Bari Santamandari. What a beautiful woman. So
- 6:59I've heard you have not had the pleasure of acquainting her, Natia, the
- 7:02best of your life is before you. In that case, then I'll speed
- 7:06up and get to it. So you've already located. But of course than
- 7:10you are. She has not changed her name as you think. Perhaps so
- 7:15it was more simple, Glan. It didn't caust you too much trouble,
- 7:18trouble, so you are merely to gaze upon such a one is worth a
- 7:23lifetime of trouble, which is exactly what it caused a couple of guys.
- 7:26I know, such such hair, such lips. Yes, well, what
- 7:30is forgive me, I carry away with you. Where is this living little
- 7:34down? Stay down? At the moment, she is registered at the Hotel
- 7:39Premeso, Room seventeen, Hotel Premison. This is the most unusual line thing.
- 7:45What do you mean? The Primeso is one hotel, very small,
- 7:47which is located on the waterfront, is most for sailors fishermen. I see
- 7:55the beautiful Toisto one we think to find in a hotel of more elegance,
- 8:00maybe deliberately staying away from the tourist bell jeans lavish there? Who can tell
- 8:03the reasons of a woman? Is she living there alone? So I have
- 8:07been in formed? Do you expect someone with her? I don't know what
- 8:11to expect. I don't even know why she came here. I'm moving in
- 8:15blind. See, life is most difficult at times. You didn't talk to
- 8:20it? Did Jane let her know you were checking on it? Please?
- 8:22You're I'm sorry, captain. I had to be sure she is most entirely
- 8:26without suspicion. God good, well, I suppose i'd better check into a
- 8:30hotel first. Then what are your plans on your I don't know exactly.
- 8:33I'll talk to her, try to get some answers, and from there on
- 8:37I'll just have to call it as I go. I hope this lovely lady
- 8:41has not involved in some serious crime. I hope not too, but I
- 8:46wouldn't bet much on it. And I'm twelve eight dollars taxi flat rate for
- 8:54the rest of the day, And by the time I checked into a hotel
- 8:56and showered and changed the rest of the day, didn't have long to go.
- 9:01The hotel promisa was on the waterfronts Captain I see, I had said,
- 9:03in some distance from town. But although it wasn't a tourist trap,
- 9:09neither was it quite the sailor's flophouse I'd been led to expect. It was
- 9:11built Native style, with bamboo shut his and wide verandas half buried in a
- 9:16thicket of mango and banana. Five bucks brought me the desk clerks undying affection,
- 9:20and two minutes later I stood unannounced at the door of Room seventeen.
- 9:24Just a minute, it's about time I ordered that ice. At least I
- 9:35thought you were the billboard. No, the name is Johnny Dollar. Johnny
- 9:37Dollar. Mind if I come in, missus Barry Well, it would be
- 9:41more comfortable than trying to talk out here in the veranda. What is it
- 9:45you want to talk about? A friend of mine name of Ed Morgan?
- 9:50All right, come on, you sit down, mister don Thanks, he
- 9:58off for you a drink, But there's no ice in this kind of heat.
- 10:01I don't care for a drink. Thanks. You'd think it would cool
- 10:05off after the sun goes down, but it doesn't, at least not very
- 10:09much. Sometimes a breeze comes up from the from What are you staring at?
- 10:16Mister? Do you why I'd had such glowing reports about you that I
- 10:22was sure they were exaggerated. They weren't. Thanks, Did you come all
- 10:28the way down here just to check those glowing reports? How do you know
- 10:33I came all the way down here? What do you mean? Maybe I
- 10:35live here? No, I've heard of you before. Ed mister Morgan used
- 10:41to talk about you. Was it Ed or mister Morgan? You don't miss
- 10:45much, do you? I try not to. It was Ed, as
- 10:48you undoubtedly knew. Yes, I know, but I wasn't sure. Why?
- 10:52Why why he lost his head? Now that I've seen you, I
- 10:56can understand. Who wouldn't. I'd rather not talk about it, mister Dolla,
- 11:03since that terrible accident. There's been only one thing I've wanted to forget.
- 11:07Well, I'm sorry to have to bring up unpleasant memories, missus Barrett,
- 11:11but I've got to ask you some questions. Nothing none of us death.
- 11:13What time did he leave you? What do you mean you were together
- 11:16earlier in the evening, you left the bar at the Drakene Arms together at
- 11:20nine o'clock, but shortly after midnight when Ed ran his car off a cliff
- 11:22into the Pacific, he was apparently alone. We went to dinner, then
- 11:28he brought me back to the apartment house. He was going to Half Moon
- 11:31Bay to see a climbed. That's why he happened to be on that road.
- 11:35I don't talk about it, mister Dollar. It's terrible to think of
- 11:39him dying that way, and his body's still out there in the ocean somewhere.
- 11:43That's why I came down here to get away and try to forget.
- 11:48Then you thought quite a lot of them we were going to be married.
- 11:52I see, Well, it's too bad it didn't work out. With all
- 11:56the wealth ed had and the beauty you have. I had the idea that
- 12:03he just worked for an insurance company and lived the way he did. Oh,
- 12:07come on, missus Barrett. Well, actually I didn't really consider it.
- 12:11My husband had left me quite well off. How long were you married
- 12:15before he died? Only ten months? Or you do have bad luck,
- 12:18don't you. I don't think this attitude of your relax Here, I have
- 12:24a cigarette. I don't smoke. Oh do you mind if I do?
- 12:28No? Of course not thiks you have a sweet here, missus Barrett.
- 12:35Or just this one room, just this room? Why ah? Then this
- 12:41door must lead to the bath. What do you think you're doing? Empty?
- 12:46Huh, of course it's empty. Then the other possibility is that closet.
- 12:52Stay away from there. When I came in, there was cigarette smoke
- 12:56in the air, stubbs in the ashtroix. There's no one here. Stay
- 12:58away from there. Oh look, missus Barrett. Turning out the lights may
- 13:03be romantic, but it's not the idea. What I was still conscious with
- 13:09groggy, and I couldn't seem to get off the floor. I heard someone
- 13:15moving, heard the door of the veranda open and close. I shook my
- 13:18head, tried to clear it, and finally staggered to my feet and found
- 13:22the light switch. Nikki Barrett was cowering back against the walls, staring at
- 13:28me, scared and not saying anything. I stumbled toward the door, but
- 13:33veranda was empty. There was no sign of movement in the shadows. So
- 13:41there was somebody hiding in that closet. No, there wasn't anybody here.
- 13:45I'm the one who hit you. You'd have to have a fist three times
- 13:46your signe forget it. I know the game now. I should have done
- 13:50it a lot sooner. There's only one person in this world who tears cigarettes
- 13:54apart and shreds the paper. That way, two of you in on it
- 13:56together. They didn't find his body because there wasn't anybody to find. He's
- 14:01still alive. He was right here in this room. That was ed Morgan,
- 14:22Johnny Dollar. This is copy Don Garcia, the Panama Federal Police.
- 14:26God, your sagian said. He get located in a matter of minutes.
- 14:30I am never lost from contacts any are you have talked with the beautiful tourista
- 14:35all. I have talked with her, Yes, and I ended up getting
- 14:37socked in the jaw. These Americano women are so very much athletics. No,
- 14:41she didn't hit me. It was a guy who was hiding out in
- 14:43a closet. See, I understand somehow I doubt it. Look, I
- 14:48see it was the man I came down here to question her about. I'm
- 14:50sure of it. I know apparently his death was faked. I think he's
- 14:56here, hiding out somewhere in Panama City. You think you can find him
- 15:00when my man make the search signor even a little dog could not escape,
- 15:03then go to it. His name is ed Morgan, but he may be
- 15:05using another one. The charge is embezzlement. Do you know? I ought
- 15:09to. He's been one of my best friends for years. From special investigator
- 15:22Johnny Dollar, Location, Panama to the home office Eternity Mutual Insurance Company,
- 15:26Hartford, Connecticut, assignment the confidential matter, the expense account continued. It
- 15:37am fourteen twelve dollars and eighty five cents telegram to Hartford advising them that the
- 15:41case had turned in a completely new direction. I'd taken the case with the
- 15:46idea of digging up a man's past, a man who had been one of
- 15:50my best friends, of finding out why, after a life of complete honesty
- 15:54and loyalty to his company, he had suddenly gone wrong and embezzled eighty thousand
- 15:56dollars. I'd found that part of the why was probably a lovely young widow
- 16:03named Nicki Barrett. But I'd found out more the man we thought dead,
- 16:07who'd supposedly drowned when his car went off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean,
- 16:10was still alive. So now it was a matter of filing charges, requesting
- 16:14extradition for Panama, and of course capturing the fugitive that I left to captain
- 16:18Garcia fort the moment I went to bed. When I came down to breakfast
- 16:27the next morning, I still hadn't heard back from Garcia, but I did
- 16:30get a return engagement from my little playmate of the night before. Good morning,
- 16:36Johnny. Oh well, good morning missus Barrett. I came into town
- 16:41early, especially to see you. Why a deep concern as to whether I
- 16:47survived that sock on the jaw? No, no concern, really. I
- 16:51imagine you have a pretty tough job. Do you mind if I sit down,
- 16:56if you promise not to double up your fist. I can explain that,
- 17:00Johnny, with all night to think about it, Yeah, I bet
- 17:03you can. How about some breakfast? I don't really they got a special
- 17:07this morning fried fish up papaya o tasty, even worse than it sounds.
- 17:11I'll just have some coffee that we already have, sugar cream, just black.
- 17:18Thank you? All right, you're on spin it off. Well,
- 17:22I'll admit it was silly to claim I was the one who hit you last
- 17:26night. Of course it was silly. I know who hit me, you
- 17:27don't. It was Ed Morgan. He was hiding in the closet in your
- 17:30hotel room. You're wrong, Johnny that you don't mind if I call you
- 17:34Johnny? Do you? I mean you and Ed were such close friends.
- 17:37I feel I almost know you. You could be wrong, missus Barrett.
- 17:41I used to think I knew Ed until he met you and decided to tap
- 17:45the till for eighty grand. All Right, call me Johnny if it gives
- 17:48you more confidence in your act. It's not an act, Okay. If
- 17:53you didn't hit me and Ed didn't, then who was it. Let's say
- 18:00it was a friend. He wasn't very friendly to me. He misunderstood your
- 18:03coming there. He shouldn't have been there himself. Well, he's married.
- 18:10Not that I knew it though until last night. That's not a bad attempt,
- 18:15Missus Barrett. At a snow job, but I still don't buy it.
- 18:19I'm going to drink your coffee. Johnny. Ed was drowned in San
- 18:22Francisco when his car ran off into the ocean. He's dead. How going
- 18:26to be dead in San Francisco and still be tearing up cigarettes and Panama?
- 18:30I did that. I don't even smoke, but the man who was there
- 18:32last night does. And I tore the cigarettes in that peculiar way. I
- 18:36picked up the habit from Ed. I just did it absent mindedly. I
- 18:38guess, well, this gets better as it goes along. I'm not lying,
- 18:41It's true. No, I mean this fishing papaya. I guess you
- 18:45just have to get used to the next year. Please, Johnny, you're
- 18:47not even touching your car. If I drink it, will you please listen
- 18:49to me. I am listening to you. I just don't believe you.
- 18:53Look, we all make mistakes. Last night, you may guess you thought
- 19:00that was Ed, but you were wrong. So why be stubborn about it?
- 19:06He cause a lot of unnecessary trouble. Let's forget it and be friends.
- 19:11He can't afford it, sweetie, I haven't got that kind of money.
- 19:14Do you think I sell my friendship. It costs at eighty thousand dollars
- 19:18in the company's money. How much of that did you get? Half of
- 19:19it? No more than half of it. No, I don't know what
- 19:22you're talking about. How much does he have left? Now? But stop
- 19:25saying such things. Can't you understand once and for all, Ed isn't here
- 19:30nor anywhere else. He's dead. No, he isn't. But I wish
- 19:34to have anywhere. What do you mean just that? But he was your
- 19:44friend, that's right. He was my friend. When I heard about his
- 19:48accident, heard him and killed. It hit hard. It hurt plenty,
- 19:52and I guess it hurt even more when I learned even stealing from the company.
- 19:56So I took the job of digging into the mess and trying to find
- 19:59some answers. I didn't want the job, didn't want any part of it,
- 20:02but I took it anyway. Somebody had to do it. And he
- 20:04had been my friend once. And then I find out he's still alive.
- 20:11Means now I've got to catch him and take him back to stand trial.
- 20:15And that's going to be even tougher than facing his death and the fact he
- 20:18was a crook. If Ed were alive, you'd take him back, help
- 20:22send him to prison like any other common criminals. That's what he is,
- 20:26isn't he? But he was your friend. Skip it. You wouldn't understand.
- 20:30I might if you'd let me try. The only thing you are trying
- 20:33to do, Missus Barrett, is to caln me into thinking I might possibly
- 20:37be wrong, thinking maybe it was somebody else in your room last night.
- 20:41The idea is to throw me off balanced, just long enough so the two
- 20:44you can make a run for it. Nice try, Only it won't work,
- 20:47so knock it off. Ed and I were going to be married.
- 20:49Johnny, in the shock of his dead Ed used to talk about you.
- 20:53He told me you were this way, hard and cold and ruthless. And
- 20:56he has no excuse. He knew what to expect it. I didn't believe
- 20:59it. I didn't think anyone can. Oh, good morning. I don't
- 21:06believe you've met my companion. I have not been so fortunate, Senor.
- 21:10This is Captain Garcia of the Panama Police, Missus Barrett, greatly honored.
- 21:15Senora. Might be good idea to take a careful look at her. Guarcia,
- 21:18you will probably be arresting her on the next day. So as an
- 21:21accomplished a fraud, let us hope such regrettable necessity is not happened. Thank
- 21:27you, Captain, I'm sure it won't. Mister Dollar has a rather boorish
- 21:32sense of humor. I comprehend, mister Dollar. It is possible, perhaps
- 21:37that I speak a little with you. Yeah, sure, I imagine missus
- 21:41Barrett will be happy to excuse me at this point as the La vista,
- 21:44Senora, remember Johnny, he was your friend. I did not wish to
- 21:51mention this matter before the Senora. Oh, I think it's better she is
- 21:53not here. It here. What have you turned up something you see?
- 21:56Senor? I tell you not even the little dog can from Garcia, so
- 22:00we have look at this man, ed Morgan. I got into the police
- 22:06car with Captain Garcia, and we drove out of town and followed the shoreline
- 22:08for about six miles. Then we pulled him near a cluster of reriggedy walls
- 22:11building around the edge of a tiny inlet. The one whom were has native
- 22:15fishing boats tied against the pilings, but no village, no shacks or any
- 22:18other sign of a habitation. I see it. Cut the mortar and let
- 22:22a cigarette who's yes, Thomas. Here we are, Senor. Here.
- 22:27He's hiding out here, Senor. He's lived on one of the little fishing
- 22:30boat which are tied to the wharf, the number three one there, which
- 22:34is blue painted. You see, yeah, I see it. Well,
- 22:40well, it's like this will be saving than a hotel. You're pretty short.
- 22:42So where's Miguel Ronesto who is on the boat. Said this man come
- 22:47out here one month ago. He paid me Gael much money just to live
- 22:51on the boat, tie up at shore and he is like you described,
- 22:53Senor. I think so? Is he all right? I'll go on board
- 22:57and talk to him, and I think I'd better go along. Whatever you
- 23:02wish, then you I wait for you here, okay? Ed? Ed
- 23:15Morgan, Ed, I know you're here. See you might as well answer.
- 23:30Cabin's unlocked. Come on down a long time man, Ed has sorry
- 23:45the place it is all littered up, temporary quarters. You understand, Sit
- 23:48down, Thanks, Johnny. Why did it have to be you? It
- 23:56had to be somebody, Ed sooner or later. You should have known that,
- 23:59but not you. How'd you get out of me? I traced missus
- 24:03Barrett on here? I thought you were dead until last night. She wasn't
- 24:07supposed to show here for six months. Last week here she was. Couldn't
- 24:11wait. Why did you do it? You wouldn't understand. You've always had
- 24:17dames crazy about you without lifting her hand, but not me. His face
- 24:21always stopped him. Sure, I used to laugh about it, but you
- 24:26just wouldn't understand. And this woman was different. Is that Nicky felt as
- 24:30hard as I did. I didn't know women like her even existed. She's
- 24:33for me all the way. Is she worth the price tag? Eighty thousand
- 24:37dollars? Got it, Johnny? It's not that way. It's just that
- 24:40Nicky had always lived well, and I had to live that way too.
- 24:42In order to be around her. I got in further and further, and
- 24:45finally I was in too deep to pull out. Did she know you were
- 24:48stealing from the company? Not? At first. It blames all mine,
- 24:52Johnny, not hers. You picked your own apples. I didn't call it
- 24:56that, and I didn't spend all that money. We decided to get out
- 25:00of the country start a new life together. I figured i'd need that much,
- 25:03and Nicky agreed to that plan. Sure, that's why she's here.
- 25:07She sold out and came on down only she didn't. She still has her
- 25:11apartment in San Francisco. You're wrong, Johnny. She's sold her furniture,
- 25:15Her clothes and stuff is all there, and I saw it. You're lying,
- 25:18Johnny. She pulled steaks. She told me. Okay, she told
- 25:23you. I guess you know why I'm here. I know why you think
- 25:30you're here. Hold it, Johnny, don't move. I've had this gun
- 25:36on you since you came on board. I know you have, but I
- 25:40wonder if you'd really use it. Don't try to find out, and don't
- 25:42tell me. I'm in a spot. I know that, but I'm going
- 25:45on as far as I can, and if I have to kill to do
- 25:48it, then I'll kill. Maybe I could have stopped him, Maybe you
- 25:56wouldn't have fired. I don't know, And for one reason or another,
- 26:00I didn't feel much like finding out. I let him go. He backed
- 26:03out of the cabin hatch and pulleded it on the outside. I heard him
- 26:07cross the deck and run along the wharf, and I waited for Garcia to
- 26:11call out to challenge him. The only sound was a car motor starting up
- 26:15and speeding away. Then I heard somebody come running down the wharf. Tell
- 26:22your dollar. Get the door open, Garcie. Where is he? What
- 26:29happened the car? Senor's me to blame? I am not Eldert before I
- 26:33know it? Never mind? Where's the nearest telephone? Two? Two miles?
- 26:37How do we get there? But how else? Senor? We walk?

- 28:32back. Well, clearly this is a case that weighs very heavily on Johnny.
- 28:37It's just, you know, I do I think everyone can kind of
- 28:41relate to where he's at here because he thought he knew that Ed Morgan,
- 28:47and now it's just really you really feel for Johnny in the situation because his
- 28:52whole view has been turned upside down, and almost in some ways feels like
