Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: We shouldn't ignore conflict
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: World's a bit of a mess at the moment, isn't it,
- 0:01Speaker 1: to say the least. And I'm as guilty as the
- 0:04Speaker 1: next person of complaining about the tyranny of distance in
- 0:07Speaker 1: New Zealand. But the fact is we're bloody lucky to
- 0:10Speaker 1: live this far across the ocean and out of harm's way.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We're at least ten thousand kilometers away from the nearest
- 0:16Speaker 1: nuclear weapon launch site, which is good to know. Put
- 0:19Speaker 1: that on your list of things to be grateful for
- 0:21Speaker 1: this morning. Whether it's in shinjog In Province in China
- 0:25Speaker 1: or the Pacific coast of the US, doesn't mean we're
- 0:28Speaker 1: immune to threats and fallout from conflict, nor should we
- 0:32Speaker 1: ignore them. And Foreign Minister Winston Peters certainly isn't. This
- 0:36Speaker 1: week he said he had never seen such an uncertain
- 0:39Speaker 1: geostrategic set of circumstances as the ones we are currently
- 0:43Speaker 1: living through. And that's Winston. We had a report out
- 0:47Speaker 1: this week said that for the first time since the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Cold War, we are replacing old warheads quicker than we
- 0:56Speaker 1: are getting rid of them. So, in other words, for
- 0:58Speaker 1: the first time, there will be an overall increase in
- 1:01Speaker 1: nuclear weapons. This is in the coming years. No matter
- 1:04Speaker 1: how far from the front lines we may be and
- 1:06Speaker 1: how safe we may feel as a consequence, it doesn't
- 1:09Speaker 1: mean we don't or shouldn't care about the rest of
- 1:11Speaker 1: the world. We love traveling us kiwis. We love exploring
- 1:16Speaker 1: and experiencing all the complexities and all the difference that
- 1:20Speaker 1: the world has to offer, and in doing so we
- 1:22Speaker 1: lend to appreciate our own backyard, just at a week
- 1:25Speaker 1: bit more so, this Martialiki weekend, I'll be taking a
- 1:29Speaker 1: moment to be grateful that when I look up to
- 1:32Speaker 1: the night sky, I will see stars rather than incoming
- 1:36Speaker 1: missiles and drones. For more from Early edition with Ryan Bridge.
