- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the Iron Team series and your daily influence.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: And today, I am going to be talking about our influence when we walk into a room.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: And as leaders, sometimes that has a different area of influence depending on the nature of the meeting.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: If we are leading the meeting, we might enter in one way.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: If we are just going to listen another, but often times, we enter the same way every time.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: It can be with ego, expectation, disinterest.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: It might look like we're there, but we're not.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we often give a vibe off.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I really want to talk about because
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: influence begins with your presence, not the volume of your presence.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: And volume isn't always about our voices or how loud we are.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: It can be how we look, the looks on our face, the interest or disinterest that we carry with us as we enter in exit places where we have influence.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: When I mean that it doesn't have to be loud, it also doesn't have to be dominant.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't have to be attention seeking.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: It shouldn't be with expectation of others.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: true influence often starts with that quiet confidence we can have as leaders.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: That willingness to be present open and intentional for whatever is required in that space in that moment, whatever that meeting that getting together is all about.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: It will be enter a space with awareness and we're ready.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: Then we signal respect for others.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: We create a room and we create a presence for a meaningful interaction.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: And by the way, when we do that over and over again.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: Our influence spreads.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: Others will see that.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: Others will mimic that, especially if we are leading organizations or we leading individual parts of organizations.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: And this presence is powerful form of influence.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: And it says, I'm here.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'm ready to engage with whatever is needed.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: for myself and everybody that's around me.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: But one of the things that I think is oftentimes left out of being prepared for meetings is setting a stage if there's going to be something exceptional about a meeting.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: So what I mean by that is owning your eye, your influence, before you leave a team.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: I recently just had this happen.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: I knew that I was going into a meeting that could get me emotional, angry, confused, frustrated.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: And if I know that's going to happen, I try to prepare and have self-awareness and prepare the meeting for that potential inevitability.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Because if you do that as a surprise, even if they know you're like that,
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: If they know that you have a tendency to have certain body language or certain reactions to certain issues, if you are respectful in a moment and you can share the energy that you might project, it could be positive, it could be negative, it could be whatever it is, anxious, grounded, distracted, overly focused, set that tone.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: How we connect with others is important.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: How we set that stage before communication can also be important.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: And this isn't about being loud and taking over a meeting.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's about preceding when we begin.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to do it when you enter a room.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: You can do it right before you talk on topic.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: I may be emotional.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: This issue bothers me.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: This issue excites me.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: What this does is it helps you own that internal energy that you have.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: And it helps you do it before you speak or act.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: And guess what that does?
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: It slows us down.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: It gives us a foundation to build our communication on.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then it allows us to align, align with the communication, align with the message that we're going to get.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: We can align our body language, our words, our emotions.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: with what we're trying to get done and that makes more responsible and positive influence.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: It also allows us to be available.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: adaptable and authentic because we've slowed down and accepted what our emotions might be, accepted that we could have distraction from those things.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: And we've set people up to lean into that and to maybe give us more authentic feedback because they're not surprised.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: And it's exactly what healthy teams and relationships need.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Influence flows most effectively when it's grounded in self-understanding and readiness.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: readiness to contribute, readiness to listen, not with an ego, but with an open mind and an open perspective of who you are, who the people are in the room and what the topic is, and that topic is why you're in the room in the first place.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's not about you.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's not about that.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, of course, a less the topic is about you or them, but usually it's not.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: Usually it's about a strategy, a task, an objective, a tactic, or many.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: And setting the stage for how those things are going to influence you as a leader.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: can help guide the team through that.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: And if they mimic that, you'll have very good, very smart communication.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: As you step into your next room, whether it's a meeting, a conversation, or just apply a place in your own thoughts.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, your presence can be your power.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: Influence doesn't always speak first.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's simply to listen.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: Oftentimes,
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's listened to learn, which is what we teach.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's our observations.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it prepares us to respond with intention.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: And when we share that with others, who we are and how we're feeling, it prepares them to respond in the same way.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: Be the eye and team by bringing that kind of energy that invites trust, connection and possibility.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for joining us today on the daily influence.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: And until next time, stay present, stay kind and keep building your influence.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you again soon.
