- 0:00Speaker 1: Back trying to get a job with billy donovan he
- 0:15Speaker 1: didn't hire you you want to go to work in
- 0:16Speaker 1: florida you were at saint b saint benedict's what happened
- 0:20Speaker 1: how come you didn't get the gig.
- 0:21Speaker 2: That was just for the people in the audience it's
- 0:24Speaker 2: like not a public it's not the book never stop
- 0:28Speaker 2: I have read that book.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Have you read the book?
- 0:30Speaker 4: All right.
- 0:30Speaker 5: No, I know.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I mean, Billy, I bought the coaches that I always idolized. Obviously,
- 0:35Speaker 2: Coach K, because I saw it. You could say whatever
- 0:38Speaker 2: you want. I mean, like what Coach K did there
- 0:41Speaker 2: was as close as you've seen to UCLA. And it
- 0:45Speaker 2: did a lot for college basketball. I mean, those teams
- 0:48Speaker 2: in the late 80s, the 90s, they really made college
- 0:52Speaker 2: basketball bigger in a similar way to like Larry Bird
- 0:55Speaker 2: and Magic.
- 0:55Speaker 5: What they did for.
- 0:57Speaker 2: College basketball, but Coach Izzo, who I just saw, Billy Donovan,
- 1:02Speaker 2: obviously Coach Calhoun, were like my personal coaches I tried
- 1:07Speaker 2: to emulate. Dan Hurley with us.
- 1:13Speaker 3: We've got to go through the roster a little more.
- 1:15Speaker 4: A lot of folks asked me today, I was playing
- 1:17Speaker 4: this charity golf tournament, asking me about guys they haven't
- 1:20Speaker 4: seen yet or they haven't been to the exhibitions.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Maybe they couldn't catch the Michigan State.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Well, if they haven't played any exhibitions games yet, then
- 1:27Speaker 2: that means they might not be seeing them.
- 1:31Speaker 3: But you know what I'm saying.
- 1:32Speaker 4: It was hard to find the Big Ten plus thing
- 1:35Speaker 4: with the Michigan State game. Anyway, Nils Machovsky. You got
- 1:41Speaker 4: the guy from Wofford. He was at UCF. where if
- 1:44Speaker 4: you looked at it statistically, he didn't make a big impact.
- 1:47Speaker 4: But what a leap he made in his junior year
- 1:49Speaker 4: at Wofford. What did you see for him in that
- 1:52Speaker 4: development process? Because he went from a 4-5 point a
- 1:55Speaker 4: game guy to 17 a game.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll try to go through it faster just so
- 1:58Speaker 2: he could get through more of these guys. But I
- 2:00Speaker 2: would say with him, just the film fit the profile
- 2:05Speaker 2: of a Joey California type of ability. Maybe a little
- 2:10Speaker 2: bit more, you know, like a little bit more athletic
- 2:12Speaker 2: version of Joey. I hope Joey doesn't hear that. Joey's
- 2:18Speaker 2: a maniac, so he'll be pissed. But yeah, I mean,
- 2:21Speaker 2: just a perfect fit for how we play offense. And
- 2:25Speaker 2: then you meet the man and you like the fact
- 2:27Speaker 2: that like he was at like a big 12 school.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It didn't go well. So he transferred down and now
- 2:34Speaker 2: comes back with a chip on his shoulder to prove
- 2:37Speaker 2: he's got a lot to prove. at this level to
- 2:39Speaker 2: keep bringing value to his career.
- 2:41Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:41Speaker 4: You got a couple of freshmen that are outstanding, uh,
- 2:44Speaker 4: junior County. Uh, I was telling some folks after watching
- 2:47Speaker 4: him in person at a game at Michigan state, he
- 2:50Speaker 4: is like a ready-made player.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Almost obviously he's.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Going to develop in the next, you know, 35, 40 games.
- 2:56Speaker 4: And then hopefully the next year we don't know what's
- 2:58Speaker 4: going to happen, but what is it about a guy
- 3:00Speaker 4: like that that tells you that this guy could step
- 3:03Speaker 4: in right now?
- 3:03Speaker 5: I can say a lot. I'll go fast though.
- 3:05Speaker 2: He, uh, um, Just came from a high school program
- 3:09Speaker 2: and a family that lends itself to being able to
- 3:12Speaker 2: handle the workload and the demands of what a week,
- 3:16Speaker 2: what a day, what a month, what a season looks like.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Because it's a hell of a commitment. It's a real
- 3:22Speaker 2: test of your work ethic, your mentality, your character, your makeup.
- 3:28Speaker 2: So if you can't handle that, you have no shot
- 3:32Speaker 2: on the court. So he can handle all that. The
- 3:35Speaker 2: amount of information... the system on offense, the terminology, how
- 3:41Speaker 2: we add elements every day. It's a lot mentally, plus
- 3:46Speaker 2: the competitive part. And he's a big guard. The guy's
- 3:49Speaker 2: close to 6'5. He's got above-the-rim athletic ability.
- 3:53Speaker 5: He shoots it.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I mean, he could really guard.
- 3:57Speaker 5: He's exciting.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I mean, he's going to be an NBA first-round pick
- 4:01Speaker 2: if everything goes as planned with him.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Colbin Landrieu, he's a little bit bigger. I'm going to
- 4:07Speaker 4: stretch this a little bit. Does he remind you in
- 4:09Speaker 4: any way of a guy like Barkley or someone like that,
- 4:13Speaker 4: 6'6 dude?
- 4:14Speaker 3: Is he kind of a wide body? No? I'm 0
- 4:18Speaker 3: for 4.
- 4:19Speaker 5: I'm trying to throw you like a softball. Yeah, I know,
- 4:21Speaker 5: I know.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Just ask me who he is. Colbin Landrieu, no, he's
- 4:28Speaker 2: just a natural. He's got great instincts for sports. probably
- 4:32Speaker 2: because he just played multiple sports, football background. You could
- 4:35Speaker 2: see the physicality. You see he had a big three-point
- 4:38Speaker 2: play put back in the Michigan State exhibition. He actually
- 4:42Speaker 2: kind of bullied Cohen Carr, who's a grown you-know-what man
- 4:47Speaker 2: out there, and he bullied him to an offensive rebound
- 4:49Speaker 2: and then scored through contact on a three-point play. This
- 4:54Speaker 2: guy doesn't even know what he's doing right now.
- 4:56Speaker 5: He has no clue out there.
- 4:59Speaker 2: He's a guy that's going to play great for us
- 5:02Speaker 2: And then he's like tailor-made for the NBA game, just
- 5:06Speaker 2: with his skill set, but a stud.
- 5:10Speaker 5: I mean, the guy's a stud.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, someone also mentioned the Ron Butler reference. Am I
- 5:16Speaker 3: in the.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Ballpark with that? You're just holding on to a comp.
- 5:20Speaker 5: All right, yes.
- 5:23Speaker 3: All right, simple answer.
- 5:26Speaker 5: You're stubborn. Simple answer.
- 5:30Speaker 4: He made some big plays in the Michigan State game.
- 5:32Speaker 4: You love to see freshmen do that in that environment.
- 5:35Speaker 4: That's why you play these exhibitions, right? To put these
- 5:38Speaker 4: guys in the frying pan.
- 5:39Speaker 5: That's why you play those exhibitions.
- 5:41Speaker 2: That's why you don't play like a D3 or something
- 5:45Speaker 2: at the XL. We put those guys in an uncomfortable spot.
- 5:49Speaker 2: They had a student section that was loud. They got
- 5:54Speaker 2: I got a lot of love for Michigan State.
- 5:57Speaker 3: They didn't have a lot of love for you, though.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Well, no. I mean, the programs do with each other.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I mean, the staffs do. The combatants do. All the
- 6:05Speaker 2: people on the periphery might not, but the combatants do.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So it's like just the road environment to get a
- 6:14Speaker 2: chance to get a feel for that before we have
- 6:16Speaker 2: to go to Boston. for TD Bank, which will be
- 6:20Speaker 2: a big environment before we've got to go to Arizona
- 6:23Speaker 2: or the Duke neutral, just to get in an environment
- 6:26Speaker 2: like that for all of our guys, for Haminia, for
- 6:31Speaker 2: the freshmen, for Oscar. Oscar probably didn't play in front
- 6:36Speaker 2: of a lot of environments like that last year at Stanford.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt about it. I've got to get to
- 6:41Speaker 3: Silas Demery, obviously.
- 6:44Speaker 4: The preseason pick in the Big East is the best
- 6:46Speaker 4: player He played Hurts so much in the NCAA tournament.
- 6:49Speaker 3: It was amazing what he was able to do, I thought.
- 6:52Speaker 4: And I would still think that if he was 100%,
- 6:54Speaker 4: Elliott Cadeau would not have gotten the best of that matchup.
- 6:58Speaker 4: And UConn would have won. That's my thought. So Demery now, senior,
- 7:04Speaker 4: he knows you well. He knows what he's got to do.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Scoring versus playmaking. I think I asked you this in
- 7:10Speaker 4: the pregame before that game, Michigan State game. Can he
- 7:13Speaker 4: balance it? Where does he come down here?
- 7:16Speaker 2: It's not easy. I mean, because he's got to, like,
- 7:18Speaker 2: manage our offense. It's very similar to being a quarterback.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I mean, the terminology, getting people in the right spots.
- 7:25Speaker 2: We've struggled with it, especially in these first halves. We've
- 7:28Speaker 2: gotten off to slow starts, and we've played very efficiently
- 7:32Speaker 2: in the second half of these games. But he's got
- 7:34Speaker 2: to find a blend of– You know, some of the
- 7:38Speaker 2: areas where we were not where we needed to.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Be last year.
- 7:41Speaker 2: We were top three in the country in transition efficiency offensively,
- 7:46Speaker 2: but we were, like, sub-200 in terms of volume. So
- 7:50Speaker 2: we need him to push the pace more and get
- 7:52Speaker 2: us out in transition more.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Where we are when we're there, we're super efficient. So
- 7:57Speaker 5: he's got to push on stops more.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Then when we get in the half court, he's got
- 8:02Speaker 2: to be able to orchestrate a very complex system where
- 8:06Speaker 2: we've got a lot of, like, on-ball, off-ball actions to
- 8:09Speaker 2: create rim shots, on-ball, off-ball actions to create threes.
- 8:15Speaker 5: You know, just it's.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Very complex what he's got to kind of then execute.
- 8:21Speaker 2: But then we also need him to play off script
- 8:23Speaker 2: in the half court too. So, like, run our offense,
- 8:27Speaker 2: which is complex. Pick your spots where you go off script.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Get us more opportunities in transition. Be our best defender
- 8:36Speaker 2: that's at the point of attack in every single possession,
- 8:39Speaker 2: and then get on both backboards. And then while that's
- 8:43Speaker 2: not going on, be the emotional leader of the team.
- 8:47Speaker 2: You know, it's a lot that you ask out of
- 8:50Speaker 2: that position, especially from our system, because it's not a dumbed-down,
- 8:55Speaker 2: ball-screen-only system of offense. It's like there's a lot of
- 8:59Speaker 2: intricacies when we play it right. It's beautiful to watch.
- 9:04Speaker 2: It's fun to play in because everyone's touching the ball.
- 9:08Speaker 2: But even the other night, I mean, that's as great
- 9:10Speaker 2: a matchup as you're going to see in college. Maybe
- 9:13Speaker 2: two of the top three or four point guards with Cadeau,
- 9:19Speaker 2: but that matchup with Fears is just a great opportunity
- 9:21Speaker 2: for him to gauge where he's at going into the year,
- 9:24Speaker 2: and he's in a good spot, obviously.
- 9:26Speaker 4: And he's up for the challenge. I haven't talked to him.
- 9:28Speaker 4: You're going to love Sadler's Demery Jr. I know you
- 9:31Speaker 4: do already, but fans are going to love this dude
- 9:33Speaker 4: in his senior year. All right, we're back in a
- 9:35Speaker 4: moment with the coach.
