Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey Hurdlers, Emily, ABOUTI here bringing you another installment of
- 0:23Speaker 1: Five Minute Friday. It's kind of crazy that we are
- 0:27Speaker 1: approaching the end of a year, to say the least.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I hear that went entirely like none of us had envisioned,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but certainly had I think it's fair share of positives.
- 0:47Speaker 1: In addition to God, everything that's just been been going on.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I do want to take a moment to say that
- 0:54Speaker 1: I really am wishing just health and good things to
- 0:58Speaker 1: all of you that are listening to this. I know
- 0:59Speaker 1: that right now now we're all kind of going through it.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Having been in New York for the majority of this
- 1:05Speaker 1: pandemic here in this apartment by myself, I know that
- 1:11Speaker 1: it's scary. I saw and lived through, like many of you,
- 1:15Speaker 1: some really intense times here back in March and April.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And I know that a lot of the rest of
- 1:20Speaker 1: the country outside of my bubble is going through some
- 1:23Speaker 1: of that in their own way right now. So my
- 1:26Speaker 1: thoughts and my prayers to all of you as you
- 1:28Speaker 1: listen to this, I want to send you always just
- 1:31Speaker 1: best my best vibes. Anyway, this episode Five Minute Friday.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Thanks for listening this week. I want to tell you
- 1:38Speaker 1: a story about my early days living in New York.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And this was prompted by a bike ride that I
- 1:45Speaker 1: was on. I've mentioned on the show before that every
- 1:48Speaker 1: Tuesday I usually go and run at a track in
- 1:52Speaker 1: Manhattan and then bike on over to one of my
- 1:54Speaker 1: favorite coffee shops. And this week in particular, I kind
- 1:59Speaker 1: of mixed up my bike route only because of the
- 2:01Speaker 1: traffic pattern at the time, and ended up biking down
- 2:05Speaker 1: a street that I used to go to a lot
- 2:08Speaker 1: when I was a newer New Yorker. And this street
- 2:12Speaker 1: just happens to be Essex Street, and on Essex Street
- 2:15Speaker 1: is a restaurant called Beauty in Essex. And okay, I'll
- 2:21Speaker 1: tell you why Beauty in Essex has some meaning to me.
- 2:24Speaker 2: So it's interesting.
- 2:25Speaker 1: You know, when you moved to New York, you learn
- 2:27Speaker 1: about the culture, right You learn about bodegas and the
- 2:31Speaker 1: cats and the bodegas, and you learn about what it
- 2:34Speaker 1: means when a subway car is empty at rush hour.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You learn about where to get the best pizza, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: that some museums have suggested admission.
- 2:45Speaker 2: What showtime mes I mean.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I can go into so many things, but for the
- 2:49Speaker 1: sake of time, here I'm not gonna, you know, prove
- 2:52Speaker 1: my New Yorker news to you. But I learned quickly
- 2:56Speaker 1: in my first few months of living in New York
- 2:59Speaker 1: that New Yorkers go out during the week, like on
- 3:04Speaker 1: a Monday or Tuesday night. And this was just bizarre
- 3:07Speaker 1: to me because I moved to New York. I'm an
- 3:09Speaker 1: editorial assistant at a company called Cafe Mom, and my
- 3:14Speaker 1: days aren't that different at first than when I was
- 3:18Speaker 1: like commuting in from Connecticut. Keep in mind, like working
- 3:21Speaker 1: on an editorial assistant salary, like I didn't have all
- 3:23Speaker 1: the money to go out and really like dive headfirst
- 3:27Speaker 1: into all of the things that New York has to offer.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I digress. So it was.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It was a friend of mine's birthday, and this is
- 3:36Speaker 1: like back in twenty thirteen in the spring, and he
- 3:39Speaker 1: asks me if I want to go out for dinner,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and it's like already six o'clock. I'm like, where are
- 3:46Speaker 1: we going to go to dinner? It's already kind of late.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And he says to me, We're going to dinner at
- 3:51Speaker 1: nine thirty at Beauty in Essex, and my friend is
- 3:55Speaker 1: paying and he has the whole bill. Just come and
- 3:59Speaker 1: I'm like, who in the world goes to dinner at
- 4:03Speaker 1: nine thirty? Like, I just couldn't believe that this was
- 4:05Speaker 1: something that people people do, Like what I I just
- 4:10Speaker 1: couldn't believe it. But he said Beauty in Essex. And
- 4:13Speaker 1: I also, fun fact, moved to New York with a
- 4:16Speaker 1: to do list that was like one hundred and fifteen
- 4:18Speaker 1: different things, and going to Beauty in Essex was on
- 4:21Speaker 1: the top of it. And that's because, like beauty is
- 4:23Speaker 1: one of those like quintessential New York experiences. Like the
- 4:27Speaker 1: restaurant itself is set back behind a pawn shop. There's
- 4:32Speaker 1: like big bouncers standing at the front. You walk in,
- 4:34Speaker 1: there's this huge spiral staircase. They're known for the fact
- 4:38Speaker 1: that they serve complimentary champagne in the bathroom. You know,
- 4:42Speaker 1: people throw lavish parties there. There used to be models
- 4:46Speaker 1: and like a listers and like all this stuff. It's
- 4:49Speaker 1: it's definitely a little bougie. And so when he said
- 4:52Speaker 1: Beauty in Essex, I wasn't enthusiastic about the idea of
- 4:54Speaker 1: going at nine thirty, but I was like, fit, I'm
- 4:56Speaker 1: gonna go. So I got dressed in an outfit that
- 5:01Speaker 1: I remember was super lame looking back on it, not
- 5:04Speaker 1: knowing that like people dressed to the nines to go there,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and I took the M one to five bus downtown
- 5:11Speaker 1: in my heels, and basically the rest of the night
- 5:16Speaker 1: becomes a little bit of a blur. It's like as
- 5:18Speaker 1: soon as I show up there and it's like stunning
- 5:20Speaker 1: and better than any of the photos I had seen
- 5:23Speaker 1: before going. As soon as I meet everyone and we
- 5:26Speaker 1: sit down at this banquette in like this dimly lit
- 5:30Speaker 1: upstairs area, within fifteen twenty minutes, the entire menus on
- 5:35Speaker 1: the table. There are women walking around in like little dresses,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and they're bringing us bottles of champagne that are on
- 5:45Speaker 1: like fire with sparklers, and like just I completely start
- 5:50Speaker 1: to lose track of time, and before I know it,
- 5:53Speaker 1: me and like all of these new friends are bouncing
- 5:55Speaker 1: between like PhD rooftop at the Dream Hotel and Labane
- 5:59Speaker 1: at Standard and we're out until two am and it
- 6:02Speaker 1: is now Wednesday at two am, and my friend is
- 6:07Speaker 1: asking if we should get a hotel room, and I'm like,
- 6:09Speaker 1: why do we need a hotel room?
- 6:11Speaker 2: We live here.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'm like covering my eyes, like reinhabiting this whole scenario.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And yeah, and it ends with me going home and
- 6:20Speaker 1: going to bed and waking up to go to work
- 6:22Speaker 1: the next day at like seven thirty or eight am.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And that was it.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And that night at Beauty and Essex had changed everything
- 6:30Speaker 1: for me because I met a lot of awesome people
- 6:34Speaker 1: who would become some of my first friends in the city,
- 6:36Speaker 1: all of them working in hospitality. So this began a
- 6:41Speaker 1: time period in my life where I would go to
- 6:43Speaker 1: my nine to five, I would come home from my
- 6:45Speaker 1: nine to five, I would take a nap, I would
- 6:47Speaker 1: get up, I would go downtown, and we would go
- 6:49Speaker 1: out on Monday and Tuesday nights because that was the
- 6:51Speaker 1: best night to go out in New York City. Oh,
- 6:56Speaker 1: my parents are probably listening to this and they're like, wow,
- 6:58Speaker 1: we are so happy. We didn't know that you did that.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It's crazy. It's crazy to think about. It's crazy to
- 7:04Speaker 1: think about right now because New York is in such
- 7:05Speaker 1: a different place. It's crazy to think about right now
- 7:08Speaker 1: because I'm in such a different place. For the last
- 7:10Speaker 1: few years, like, I haven't been a big goer outer,
- 7:14Speaker 1: so to speak, but I reflect on that time specifically
- 7:18Speaker 1: this week, after riding my bike across Essex Street and
- 7:22Speaker 1: literally like just pulling over again and thinking about those times, Like, man,
- 7:28Speaker 1: I am such a different person now than I was then.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Like then I was a girl, and now like I
- 7:36Speaker 1: am a woman, and I have perspective, and I have
- 7:39Speaker 1: so much appreciation for those times and for that chapter
- 7:44Speaker 1: and for all that New York is, even right now
- 7:47Speaker 1: when it feels like it's just not the same in
- 7:49Speaker 1: some ways anyway, I would kill to have a glass
- 7:54Speaker 1: of champagne in that bathroom right now. But to be honest,
- 7:59Speaker 1: these days, I'm still and pretty grateful for this roof
- 8:02Speaker 1: over my head, for my health, and that every day
- 8:06Speaker 1: still I get to wake up and walk out onto
- 8:09Speaker 1: the street and be here in New York, in this
- 8:12Speaker 1: place that I call home. So my prompt for you,
- 8:18Speaker 1: what is one thing that you were doing, let's say,
- 8:22Speaker 1: five or six years ago that contributed to who you
- 8:27Speaker 1: are today. And I know, I know everything that we
- 8:30Speaker 1: do contributes to who we are in the future, but
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm talking like a specific memory that like kind of
- 8:36Speaker 1: makes you do that goofy smile that you think about
- 8:39Speaker 1: that contributed to the person that you are listening to
- 8:43Speaker 1: this right now. Highlights of the week. Links to all
- 8:47Speaker 1: of this stuff is in the show notes. First up,
- 8:50Speaker 1: watch Barack Obama and Steph Curry on Instagram Live. I
- 8:53Speaker 1: love this conversation and I love like Barack Obama feels
- 8:57Speaker 1: like I'm listening to a conversation with my dad. Definitely
- 8:59Speaker 1: worth watch. I loved this quote that Barack had. The
- 9:02Speaker 1: most important thing a leader does is set the tone.
- 9:05Speaker 1: In terms of culture. You set values around which you
- 9:09Speaker 1: are organizing yourself. You have to ask yourself, how do
- 9:13Speaker 1: you help the people around you succeed?
- 9:16Speaker 2: Watch my dad sent me this morning a match Made
- 9:19Speaker 2: in Hell. It's a commercial for Match.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Basically, Satan goes on match and matches with twenty twenty.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And I know you can probably assume like how this works,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and it's just it's hilarious.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You are welcome.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Read sixty five productive things to do when you're bored
- 9:37Speaker 1: at work. I got this pick from hurdler Nicole's newsletter.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'll link to that in the show notes. Thanks the
- 9:43Speaker 1: call for the shout out to me this week. And
- 9:46Speaker 1: if if you're like me, you're probably feeling burnt out lately,
- 9:50Speaker 1: and so it is time to figure out how to
- 9:52Speaker 1: make the most out of feeling burnt out at times,
- 9:55Speaker 1: not all the time, but sometimes so. These tips they're
- 9:58Speaker 1: from Career Contessa. They're a good place to start. Also
- 10:02Speaker 1: another watch. If you haven't done this yet, maybe you're
- 10:04Speaker 1: living under a rock I don't know. You've got to
- 10:07Speaker 1: check out The Undoing on HBO. I first heard about
- 10:10Speaker 1: it on Thanksgiving my mom and one of my best friends.
- 10:13Speaker 1: They couldn't stop talking about it. I then proceeded to
- 10:16Speaker 1: watch all five episodes of the series before the sixth episode,
- 10:21Speaker 1: the finale on Sunday, and I was hooked. Quick synopsis
- 10:25Speaker 1: on this Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant are a married couple.
- 10:29Speaker 1: They live with their son on the Upper West Side,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and there's a murder, and the whole series is basically
- 10:34Speaker 1: figuring out like who did the murder?
- 10:37Speaker 2: It's a great binge. Can't recommend it enough.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Listen Trained, the Nike podcast Harnessing the Power of Your Mind.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I nerd out, completely nerd out at the opportunity to
- 10:49Speaker 1: have a better understanding of how our minds work. And
- 10:52Speaker 1: this episode from Trained, it's a really solid listen. I
- 10:56Speaker 1: always love how Ryan Flaherty, he's their senior director of Performance.
- 11:00Speaker 2: He's also a past hurdler.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I love how Ryan asks questions and really nerds out
- 11:05Speaker 1: with his guests.
- 11:07Speaker 2: He's a science geek like me. You'll really like this one.
- 11:09Speaker 1: It really sheds some insight as to how our mind works,
- 11:15Speaker 1: how we follow people, why we choose to follow along
- 11:20Speaker 1: with certain people or listen to certain people.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Ten out of ten would recommend, and.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Last, but not least, this week on five Minute Friday,
- 11:29Speaker 1: I want to chat to you about setting some goals.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I've got two more end of year goal setting workshops
- 11:33Speaker 1: in the next couple of weeks, and I would love
- 11:36Speaker 1: to see you there. I know this year has been frustrating,
- 11:38Speaker 1: but we owe it to ourselves to take back some
- 11:41Speaker 1: of that control and do the best we can with
- 11:44Speaker 1: what we have. I promise, I promise, I promise you
- 11:47Speaker 1: will walk away from these workshops feeling excited instead of tired.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I got you use the Code podcast at checkout to
- 11:54Speaker 1: get five dollars off. Links to both of these goal
- 11:57Speaker 1: setting workshops are in the show notes. Okay, I know
- 12:01Speaker 1: I said last thing, but I do want to throw
- 12:03Speaker 1: this into the mix. If you are a hurdler listening
- 12:05Speaker 1: to this who works at a company that can help
- 12:07Speaker 1: me with merch. The merch requests are coming in and
- 12:10Speaker 1: I want to make it happen. Specifically, I really want
- 12:13Speaker 1: to make Crew Next sweatshirts and mugs. So anyone that
- 12:16Speaker 1: has insight on how we can make this happen, I'm
- 12:20Speaker 1: all yours. As always at Emily a Body and at
- 12:25Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast, Another Hurdle Conquered.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time
