- 2:06Speaker 2: We learned about God's protection as he gave them victory
- 2:09Speaker 2: over their first battle against the Amalekites. Now we will
- 2:13Speaker 2: learn about God's continued blessing over his people and his
- 2:17Speaker 2: promise to never leave them as he gives them the

- 3:01Speaker 3: slash stress. In yesterday's episode, we learned of the first
- 3:05Speaker 3: military victory of the Israelites. God was giving them further
- 3:09Speaker 3: proof that there was no limit to what they could
- 3:12Speaker 3: do as long as they trusted in him and his power. Today,
- 3:16Speaker 3: we'll join them in the wilderness once again, three months
- 3:19Speaker 3: since they exited the land of Egypt and escaped Pharaoh.
- 3:24Speaker 3: They've been through a lot already. And today, we'll hear
- 3:27Speaker 3: God once again confirm His promises to them. They are
- 3:32Speaker 3: about to be a holy nation, set apart from all others.
- 3:36Speaker 3: We will see how God gives them and us rules
- 3:39Speaker 3: for living, the Ten Commandments. Let's listen now to today's story.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Three months had passed since the exodus from Egypt. God
- 3:51Speaker 2: had brought the people through hunger, thirst, and battle. The
- 3:55Speaker 2: galvanizing force of God united the people of Israel. They
- 4:00Speaker 2: had made it to the wilderness of Sinai, a grazing
- 4:03Speaker 2: countryside lush and uninhabited. There they camped at the base
- 4:08Speaker 2: of the mountain. There God called Moses and beckoned him
- 4:12Speaker 2: to the top of the mountain. God spoke to Moses
- 4:15Speaker 2: on top of the mountain and said, Tell the people
- 4:18Speaker 2: of Israel that I have bore them on eagles' wings
- 4:21Speaker 2: to save them from the Egyptians. If you obey my
- 4:25Speaker 2: commands and keep my promises, you will be my treasured
- 4:29Speaker 2: possession among all people groups. For all the earth is mine,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and you shall be my holy nation. So Moses went
- 4:38Speaker 2: down and told the elders of God's promises. They consecrated
- 4:42Speaker 2: themselves and flocked to the base of the mountain to
- 4:45Speaker 2: worship God. On the morning of the third day, thunder
- 4:49Speaker 2: emanated from the peak of the mountain. and lightning lit
- 4:53Speaker 2: up the skies surrounding the top. A thick cloud surrounded Sinai,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and a bellowing trumpet could be heard from the top.
- 5:02Speaker 2: The people trembled in.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Awe and fear.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Smoke could be seen at a distance, and Moses knew
- 5:08Speaker 2: God had come in fire. The mountain shook, and the
- 5:13Speaker 2: sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Moses began
- 5:17Speaker 2: to speak, but was interrupted by thunder. Moses took a
- 5:21Speaker 2: deep breath, looked back at the people, and ascended up
- 5:25Speaker 2: the mountain. There God spoke with great power and authority.
- 5:30Speaker 2: With lightning surrounding the mountain and the earth shaking, God
- 5:34Speaker 2: poured forth his commandments. He spoke, saying, I am the
- 5:39Speaker 2: Lord your God. I am the one who delivered you
- 5:43Speaker 2: out of slavery from the land of Egypt. You shall
- 5:47Speaker 2: have no other gods but me. You shall not make
- 5:51Speaker 2: any idols, no carved images of anything that is below
- 5:55Speaker 2: or above the earth. Do not bow to them or
- 5:58Speaker 2: serve them, for I alone am your God. I am
- 6:02Speaker 2: a jealous God, showing myself to generations of those who
- 6:07Speaker 2: hated me. But I show steadfast love always, and show
- 6:12Speaker 2: love to those who keep me and my commandments. You
- 6:16Speaker 2: shall not take my name in vain. For I am
- 6:19Speaker 2: the Lord, and I will hold him guilty if he
- 6:22Speaker 2: takes my name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day. Keep
- 6:27Speaker 2: it special and holy. Labor and work hard for six days,
- 6:32Speaker 2: but on the seventh day you should rest. Sabbath and
- 6:36Speaker 2: rest in for me. Enjoy me. You nor your children, servants,
- 6:42Speaker 2: or livestock should labor. For I created all things in
- 6:46Speaker 2: six days, and on the seventh I enjoyed the fruit
- 6:49Speaker 2: of my labor. Honor your father and your mother. If
- 6:53Speaker 2: you do, your days shall be long in the land
- 6:56Speaker 2: I have given you. You shall not murder. You shall
- 7:00Speaker 2: not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not
- 7:05Speaker 2: lie against your neighbor and bear false witness. You shall
- 7:09Speaker 2: not covet and seek after your neighbor's possessions or relationships.
- 7:14Speaker 2: God's commands held weight, and the people feared and respected
- 7:18Speaker 2: him enough to listen, for there was still thunder echoing
- 7:21Speaker 2: from the mountain. It was always God's desire to dwell
- 7:25Speaker 2: with his children. Since the garden, he desired to walk
- 7:29Speaker 2: through life with those he loved. So he told Moses
- 7:33Speaker 2: to have them build a tabernacle so he might live
- 7:36Speaker 2: among them, a holy place for the Spirit of the
- 7:39Speaker 2: Lord to dwell among his people. So the Israelites did
- 7:44Speaker 2: as the Lord said and built him a tabernacle, a
- 7:47Speaker 2: tent for him to travel alongside them in the wilderness.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Though God was not confined to a tent, this would
- 7:54Speaker 2: be a holy place for him to meet with them
- 7:57Speaker 2: and be in their midst. The tabernacle was constructed with
- 8:00Speaker 2: great care and instruction. It included the Ark of the Covenant,
- 8:05Speaker 2: mercy seat, table of showbread, the golden lampstand, the altar
- 8:10Speaker 2: of burnt offering, the altar of incense, and the bronze layer.
- 8:15Speaker 2: All these would serve as a picture of God's faithfulness,
- 8:18Speaker 2: and each would represent an aspect of their relationship with
- 8:22Speaker 2: the Lord.
- 8:25Speaker 3: We open today's reading with the Israelites arriving at Sinai.
- 8:28Speaker 3: It's been three months since they escaped Pharaoh and his armies.
- 8:33Speaker 3: God's presence and provisions was never far away. He provided water.
- 8:37Speaker 3: He sent bread from heaven and quail for them to eat.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And God delivered them in a ferocious battle against the Amalekites.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Now they've arrived at a beautiful place, a lush pasture
- 8:48Speaker 3: near the foot of a mountain. It was time to
- 8:50Speaker 3: rest for a while. God gave Moses a message to
- 8:54Speaker 3: remind the people of all that he had done for them,
- 8:57Speaker 3: how he had delivered them from the Egyptians, carrying them
- 9:00Speaker 3: on eagles' wings to safety. It's a beautiful and powerful message.
- 9:04Speaker 3: The promises he's made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were
- 9:08Speaker 3: surely known to these people But it had been many
- 9:11Speaker 3: generations by now, and God reminds them that they are
- 9:15Speaker 3: His chosen people, blessed in a very special way. But
- 9:20Speaker 3: this blessing was conditioned upon their trust and obedience. If
- 9:24Speaker 3: they followed His commands and kept the covenant relationship with Him,
- 9:28Speaker 3: they would be a holy nation, set apart from all others.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Moses delivered the message, and the people responded by flocking
- 9:35Speaker 3: to the mountain to worship. For all their past failures
- 9:40Speaker 3: and grumblings and unfaithfulness, their response was exactly what God
- 9:45Speaker 3: desires and demands. Our right response to God, His promises,
- 9:50Speaker 3: His provision is gratitude and praise, worship and adoration. God
- 9:56Speaker 3: was going to come down and the people would hear
- 9:58Speaker 3: Him speak with a voice like thunderbolt. But we also
- 10:01Speaker 3: heard a reminder of God's holiness and purity and how
- 10:04Speaker 3: in our own power we cannot approach him. God wants
- 10:08Speaker 3: his children to draw near, but because of his sin,
- 10:12Speaker 3: we are separated from God. It is only through the
- 10:16Speaker 3: blood of Jesus Christ, God's son, who would die on
- 10:18Speaker 3: the cross for our sins and rise again, that we
- 10:21Speaker 3: are able now to approach the throne of God, the
- 10:24Speaker 3: presence of God in his holiness with boldness. The foot
- 10:28Speaker 3: of the mountain was as close as the people could come,
- 10:31Speaker 3: but Moses and Aaron were called up higher, up to
- 10:34Speaker 3: the top of the mountain to receive a very special
- 10:37Speaker 3: message that was to become the guiding set of principles
- 10:40Speaker 3: for God's people in every generation. There on top of
- 10:44Speaker 3: the mountain, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, rules for
- 10:48Speaker 3: a right relationship with God, God's law. The law of
- 10:53Speaker 3: God is so very important, so significant in the Scripture.
- 10:58Speaker 3: This is the way we walk with God. This is
- 11:01Speaker 3: the way we have a relationship with God, by keeping
- 11:04Speaker 3: His commandments. The Ten Commandments have been given not only
- 11:08Speaker 3: to the Israelites, but for every generation. This is the
- 11:12Speaker 3: law of God. And the law of God is vital
- 11:15Speaker 3: to our spiritual, physical, and emotional health. God instructed the
- 11:20Speaker 3: people to build a tabernacle to worship him. This dwelling
- 11:23Speaker 3: place for God on earth would represent God's presence with
- 11:27Speaker 3: his people. And the tabernacle would be carried everywhere they
- 11:31Speaker 3: would go on their long journey. This was not a
- 11:33Speaker 3: permanent home, but a temporary tent, a dwelling that would
- 11:37Speaker 3: one day be replaced when God's spirit would come upon
- 11:40Speaker 3: those who followed him through his son Jesus. Because now
- 11:43Speaker 3: We are the permanent home of God. Too soon, though,
- 11:47Speaker 3: the people will turn and break the first commandment, and
- 11:50Speaker 3: that's what we'll hear about the next time. Dear God,
- 11:53Speaker 3: thank you for this important, vital passage of Scripture, reminding
- 11:58Speaker 3: us that you dwell among us, that your presence is
- 12:01Speaker 3: always near to us through Jesus Christ. May we worship
- 12:05Speaker 3: you and adore you always through your Son, Jesus Christ.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Amen.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
