- 0:31Speaker 6: This week we have a very special inside look. You've
- 0:35Speaker 6: heard of actors, but have you heard of the people
- 0:37Speaker 6: who represent them.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We're talking agents, and we're talking to agents. These people
- 0:43Speaker 2: get the job done, close deals and help their clients
- 0:47Speaker 2: book the movers and shakers of the industry.
- 0:50Speaker 5: This town wouldn't run without agents. They are the most
- 0:53Speaker 5: important part of the industry. And they told this at themselves,
- 0:57Speaker 5: so you know it's true.
- 0:58Speaker 6: Let's listen in on their conversation. Hi, everybody, my name
- 1:10Speaker 6: is Nancy Nancy Greenberg. I am a non union commercial agent.
- 1:16Speaker 7: I'm Kelsey Mamplow, and I represent a good deal of TikTokers,
- 1:22Speaker 7: the ones that make food on counters.
- 1:24Speaker 8: Hey, ii ya, it's Greg Johnny. I represent comedy Comedy comedy, comedy.
- 1:30Speaker 8: I'm so happy to be here.
- 1:32Speaker 5: It's so nice to be here with everybody. My name
- 1:34Speaker 5: is Lenn Howardson. I represent a lot of singers and
- 1:41Speaker 5: songwriters in the film space. It is just a pleasure
- 1:46Speaker 5: to see you guys.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Hey, what's up? I'm Chip Donovan and I represent tweens.
- 1:51Speaker 8: Fuck man, Does anybody have a light? This is a
- 1:53Speaker 8: great group, got it?
- 1:55Speaker 5: I got a cigar lighter here. Do you want to
- 1:57Speaker 5: use it? That'll do great? Come on over, anybody else?
- 2:00Speaker 5: I have some some Cubans if you If anybody wants
- 2:04Speaker 5: some Romeo.
- 2:08Speaker 6: My assistant is getting me a kombucha. Katie, Katie, can
- 2:11Speaker 6: you get me a kombucha? Does anyone else want a kombucha?
- 2:15Speaker 2: No, I'll just get my Yeah, I'll get my assistant
- 2:17Speaker 2: to do it. Hey, Greg, Greg, could you uh? Could
- 2:20Speaker 2: you get me a Sorry?
- 2:21Speaker 5: Not Greg?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Not you Greg? You do comedy? My assistant?
- 2:25Speaker 3: Oh no, I know you weren't talking to me.
- 2:28Speaker 5: That's funny.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I've got a vape. If anybody wants a vape, I'll
- 2:31Speaker 2: take a vape. Here you go.
- 2:34Speaker 7: I don't like to do anything that could screw with
- 2:36Speaker 7: my palette because I gotta taste all the food that
- 2:39Speaker 7: my people make.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Sometimes you are fucking kidding you taste that ship?
- 2:44Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I gotta taste it all. Otherwise, how do
- 2:46Speaker 7: you think I book? How do you think I get
- 2:47Speaker 7: people on my roster?
- 2:49Speaker 8: I thought it was their looks, because let me say,
- 2:51Speaker 8: all your clients are hot.
- 2:53Speaker 7: Okay, well, I can't say that. You know, I'm not
- 2:56Speaker 7: trying to get arrested again, but I can't say.
- 2:58Speaker 1: That you learned.
- 3:00Speaker 3: It's a new business.
- 3:01Speaker 5: It's business, can I say? Yeah? I also have no
- 3:04Speaker 5: opinion on any of my artists looks anybody. I have
- 3:07Speaker 5: no opinion on what they look like or you know,
- 3:12Speaker 5: any sort of sex appeal they have. I have no
- 3:14Speaker 5: opinion on that.
- 3:16Speaker 6: My only opinion on what my artists look like is
- 3:19Speaker 6: whether or not they can book a Snapchat commercial. If
- 3:23Speaker 6: they have it, they have it. If they don't, they
- 3:25Speaker 6: don't see you, goodbye.
- 3:29Speaker 5: And yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Legally speaking, I have no ability to have an opinion
- 3:33Speaker 2: on any of the tweens I represent off the record,
- 3:38Speaker 2: though I've got opinions. I've definitely oh.
- 3:40Speaker 7: Okay, yeah, yeah, we definitely want to keep that off
- 3:43Speaker 7: the record for sure.
- 3:44Speaker 5: So I have a here, a question here from the fishbowl.
- 3:47Speaker 5: This is a good question for you. I know, agents
- 3:50Speaker 5: being asked questions. I mean I actively avoid answering questions.
- 3:55Speaker 7: Yeah, should I refer this to my fake email address?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Like yeah, God give me.
- 4:01Speaker 5: A like that's good. Yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 4: This question is how do I get signed by an agent?
- 4:10Speaker 5: What?
- 4:10Speaker 1: What?
- 4:11Speaker 5: Do you guys have any advice on on what you're
- 4:13Speaker 5: looking for when you're signing. I will say I've I've
- 4:17Speaker 5: actually a little secret of mine. I've never signed anyone.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Oh okay, because earlier you should have made it sound
- 4:23Speaker 7: like you had a bunch of artists that you didn't
- 4:25Speaker 7: have opinions on their looks.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I do have artists. I did not sign them.
- 4:29Speaker 5: I kind of got them through other means and dowed them,
- 4:32Speaker 5: you know, through kind of uh. I got grandfather and
- 4:35Speaker 5: into a few of them at the agency, and a
- 4:37Speaker 5: couple of them were gifted to me for birthdays. But
- 4:40Speaker 5: other than that, I actually have never signed a single client.
- 4:45Speaker 5: You know. I like to say they just show up,
- 4:47Speaker 5: like like like fire an apartment, babies, the.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Word of mouth everybody be cool situation.
- 4:53Speaker 5: It is a little everybody be cool And that's musicians
- 4:56Speaker 5: for you. You know, I represent a lot of musicians.
- 4:59Speaker 5: I represent probably three fifths of the artists in the
- 5:02Speaker 5: second Trolls soundtrack.
- 5:04Speaker 7: So wow, and you're talking about the big the Big
- 5:08Speaker 7: five that are in there, there are the artists on
- 5:10Speaker 7: the side that like, we aren't thinking about that. Maybe
- 5:13Speaker 7: you represented.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I'm talking specifically about the three of the Big five.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Yeah wow. So that's deep pain. Fergie and of course
- 5:23Speaker 5: uh and Paula. No, not Katie. I wish she's my
- 5:29Speaker 5: she's my wife signed with you.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Everybody making billions of dollars, they're all just sort of
- 5:35Speaker 6: an agreement.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know. And what I like to say
- 5:38Speaker 5: is deals are done in the heart. That's what I say.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Wow, you're not you're nicer than me.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Thing, I'll tell you that.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Yeah, how do you guys sign clients for me?
- 5:51Speaker 7: It's all about counter size, spread ability, and layers. We're
- 5:56Speaker 7: looking for stuff that we're looking for big counters. I
- 5:59Speaker 7: don't want to see a small counner. I'm sorry. I'm
- 6:02Speaker 7: sorry New York City apartments. I'm sorry. It's just I'm
- 6:06Speaker 7: not gonna get the good, the good juice from that.
- 6:08Speaker 7: And then we need some spreadable things. I want to
- 6:11Speaker 7: see you make a PB and J I want to
- 6:13Speaker 7: see you make bean dip. I want to see you
- 6:15Speaker 7: make a lasagna.
- 6:17Speaker 8: I don't know when you say spreadable, you mean just
- 6:19Speaker 8: like the knife spreading the ship.
- 6:22Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, you know. Sometimes, you know, sometimes people send
- 6:26Speaker 7: me unsolicited my golf stuff, you know, their materials.
- 6:30Speaker 9: Oh, I tried to beat corn. My corn that doesn't
- 6:34Speaker 9: spread on a counter, just rolls around. Make a corn
- 6:37Speaker 9: on a table, that's crazy. Somebody sent me Graham crackers.
- 6:42Speaker 9: Made it all crumbs.
- 6:43Speaker 7: I don't watch this. I don't want to watch this.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You kind of have a test. You can have a
- 6:48Speaker 2: test to PB and J. Yeah. Yeah, the one bean.
- 6:54Speaker 7: Dip is a good wine. But you know, sometimes I
- 6:56Speaker 7: like for you to surprise it. I'm getting bean dips
- 6:59Speaker 7: all day year, you know.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 7: It gave me something surprising too. And maybe come up
- 7:03Speaker 7: with your own original dish, you know.
- 7:05Speaker 6: Kelsey, I'm very curious because I was showed a TikTok
- 7:10Speaker 6: trend of it's a new way to make pasta where
- 7:13Speaker 6: you throw a block of feta, a bunch of tomato, everything,
- 7:17Speaker 6: you mix it in a pot and you stick it
- 7:18Speaker 6: in the oven.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Do any of your clients do that? Where do they stand?
- 7:22Speaker 7: That's the stove. People, I'm strictly counters.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Wait, so if it if it, if it goes into
- 7:30Speaker 2: an oven, your hands up? I don't really tell son
- 7:35Speaker 2: is your test?
- 7:36Speaker 5: Right?
- 7:36Speaker 3: You make a living getting.
- 7:37Speaker 8: Ten percent off of tiktoks that are only food based,
- 7:43Speaker 8: that are spreads, spreads.
- 7:45Speaker 5: On catt Yeah, Kelsey, I know you're not supposed to
- 7:47Speaker 5: tell us how the sausage is made, but I gotta.
- 7:49Speaker 7: Know what I don't don't.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Don't you have a family, family?
- 7:54Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, sorry, it's not sausage. I know you don't
- 7:57Speaker 5: speak Okay. I know you can't tell us how the
- 8:00Speaker 5: how the spaghetti on the counter is made, but how
- 8:03Speaker 5: you make it on a commission? How much is war?
- 8:04Speaker 7: This is crazy to me because sometimes some people make
- 8:08Speaker 7: something a little more creative, like that lasagna. Right, making
- 8:11Speaker 7: alazania without an oven, that's that's something to talk about.
- 8:13Speaker 7: That's something you talk about at work. For sure, you
- 8:16Speaker 7: make alasana without an oven?
- 8:18Speaker 2: You know, I don't think I would eat that. I
- 8:20Speaker 2: think I would steer here.
- 8:21Speaker 6: Yeah, you would think you would think you have old
- 8:24Speaker 6: shredded parmesan cheese.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Most people would not.
- 8:27Speaker 7: You would dick right for sure?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Who are some of your clients. You got, who do
- 8:32Speaker 2: you have?
- 8:32Speaker 7: Oh my god, I got Tommy foods like Betsy Beans, Betsy.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Beans, Betsy Beans. I did a general with Betsy Beans.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Oh you did?
- 8:44Speaker 8: Yes, yes, I have to, you know, hit a quota
- 8:48Speaker 8: for generals every once in a while. And Betsy Beans
- 8:50Speaker 8: walked into my office a couple of years ago.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I mean inherent talent.
- 8:57Speaker 8: Oh yeah, I mean I had I anytime I any
- 9:00Speaker 8: time I meet with clients, I make them h do
- 9:02Speaker 8: the script for Who's on first?
- 9:05Speaker 7: Wow? Yeah, no I cannot.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 9:10Speaker 7: I've never totally heard Betsy speak. I've only seen her
- 9:13Speaker 7: make things on counter how'd she do?
- 9:16Speaker 3: She was all right?
- 9:17Speaker 8: You can tell she was green, you can?
- 9:22Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well I will say.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I mean I love clients that can diversify like that.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Give me somebody that originally goes out for comedy. Yea,
- 9:33Speaker 2: Betsy Beans bombs it and switches immediately to stove based
- 9:37Speaker 2: and and I guess a counter based.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know. I don't deal with her stove stuff,
- 9:41Speaker 7: so that's not me.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Oh you have another she has another whole age.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Yeah, it's kind of like what I guess, Like Nancy,
- 9:48Speaker 7: you do commercials and that's like different than or something.
- 9:51Speaker 6: Yeah, Kelsey, I was going to bring up you know,
- 9:54Speaker 6: we do share that client, Arian art Chokes.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and she in a night.
- 10:00Speaker 6: She's been a real thorn on my side lately because
- 10:03Speaker 6: she refuses to change her last name to something normal.
- 10:06Speaker 6: So I'll send her out for you know, these instacart ads,
- 10:10Speaker 6: these these credit card ads, and she's going in there
- 10:13Speaker 6: as Arian Artichokes. I'm like, say Joanes, say last name,
- 10:17Speaker 6: say Gomet.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Say whatever your name again, what's her name?
- 10:20Speaker 7: Arian Artichokes.
- 10:22Speaker 5: I signed her too.
- 10:24Speaker 7: You signed someone?
- 10:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well no, I didn't sign her, but
- 10:27Speaker 5: I looked at my list and she's on it. I
- 10:30Speaker 5: just found out.
- 10:31Speaker 7: And you know, there was a I thought when I
- 10:33Speaker 7: signed her, I thought she was Arian Artichoke because I thought,
- 10:36Speaker 7: but there was a crawdma my piece of paper, so
- 10:38Speaker 7: I was I was also surprised, I honestly.
- 10:41Speaker 5: To be honest, To be honest, I thought that she
- 10:44Speaker 5: was already a grande until we were talking and I'm
- 10:46Speaker 5: realizing I would didn't even read the last name.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Oh wow, wow, you must have been in for a surprise.
- 10:53Speaker 4: That is that is my trait. That is what happens
- 10:56Speaker 4: to me. I love the surprise.
- 10:58Speaker 7: Wait a minute, I got a question for Chip.
- 11:00Speaker 10: How do yep?
- 11:01Speaker 7: How do you get hey get tweens? How do you
- 11:03Speaker 7: sign on tweets?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Well, you know, there is like a lot of math
- 11:07Speaker 2: and kind of a lot of strategy behind finding the
- 11:10Speaker 2: right tween. You know, you've got to be prepared to
- 11:14Speaker 2: look at a lot of tweens, and you've got to
- 11:15Speaker 2: be prepared to go through a lot of hoops because
- 11:18Speaker 2: you know these people aren't you know, they're not legal adults.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So what am I doing? I'm hanging out. I'm waiting
- 11:25Speaker 2: at malls.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I was gonna say, are you a mall agent?
- 11:29Speaker 2: I'm definitely not a mall agent. I'm definitely not a
- 11:31Speaker 2: mall agent because I do represent you know, because you
- 11:34Speaker 2: don't represent all pretty No.
- 11:40Speaker 7: As if as if a wall sign with me.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Only for a mall, as if I could put a
- 11:48Speaker 1: mall into any commercial for a mall is.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Gonna make peedup.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I'll tell you this.
- 11:56Speaker 6: Will you put something in my schedule? Will you schedule
- 11:59Speaker 6: thirty minutes of laughing for me right now?
- 12:03Speaker 8: Schedule in general with the King of Prussia, mall I'm
- 12:06Speaker 8: telling you this, Mall's compared to some of my clients,
- 12:09Speaker 8: probably can book a little better.
- 12:14Speaker 2: So anyway, So anyway, how I book clients is I
- 12:18Speaker 2: go to Mall's. You know, I'm constantly looking for good talent,
- 12:21Speaker 2: and when you find it, you know you found it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: You know, we're talking about diversifying. I love clients that
- 12:29Speaker 2: have diversified kind of their portfolio. Like, I don't want
- 12:31Speaker 2: a kid who's just done acting. I want a kid
- 12:34Speaker 2: who plays soccer. I want a kid who plays baseball.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I want a kid who plays the violin and mostly sports.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I want a kid water Polo is huge right now,
- 12:45Speaker 2: and what I'm trying to do is get these kids
- 12:47Speaker 2: connected with the right projects. So if I have a project,
- 12:51Speaker 2: oh here is a two line part on that's so
- 12:54Speaker 2: Raven's reboot, I'm going to find the right kid for it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: You know, Oh he's playing polo. I'm gonna go find
- 13:00Speaker 2: a young eleven or twelve year old playing polo and
- 13:03Speaker 2: figure out how to book them. You know, so I've
- 13:06Speaker 2: signed you know, at this point, probably eleven tho tweens.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Smokes.
- 13:12Speaker 3: That's your client list.
- 13:13Speaker 4: That's how long.
- 13:14Speaker 2: They only last about two years and then I have
- 13:15Speaker 2: to let them go stick.
- 13:18Speaker 5: So you don't have anybody in for the long haul.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I've got I've got two clients that are still in
- 13:23Speaker 2: for the long haul. One is thirteen and I just
- 13:27Speaker 2: love her. Her name is Natasha Pants. I think she
- 13:30Speaker 2: has a gift. And then one is a forty seven
- 13:34Speaker 2: year old Rick Geffrien. He is a theater actor.
- 13:38Speaker 5: I really believe in it.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Of the geff and playoffs. Wow, when crosses your when
- 13:46Speaker 2: it crosses your deck, you got to take it.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Yeah, what did the how did the geffen cross the road?
- 13:53Speaker 5: He signed? He signed a contract?
- 13:55Speaker 3: Oh my god, God.
- 13:58Speaker 7: That is the funniest joke I've ever.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I know, I know, and I wrote it down about
- 14:03Speaker 5: twenty five years ago. I use it. I use it
- 14:06Speaker 5: in different situations.
- 14:08Speaker 3: You got something, Glenn.
- 14:10Speaker 2: So anyway, Nancy, how are you booking clients? How are
- 14:13Speaker 2: you picking them?
- 14:14Speaker 6: I mean, like you, it's a numbers game, you know.
- 14:17Speaker 6: I'm trying to rack up all the non union kiddos
- 14:20Speaker 6: that I can, except they're adults. Lately, I have been
- 14:24Speaker 6: going to sort of tourist buses where they'll bust people
- 14:29Speaker 6: in from other states and I just sort of sit
- 14:31Speaker 6: there and I wait and they'll pop out one by one,
- 14:34Speaker 6: one by one, and I'll just ask for headshots. I'll
- 14:36Speaker 6: give them my card and I'll say, hey, I'll get
- 14:39Speaker 6: you one audition a year.
- 14:41Speaker 1: How does that sound?
- 14:42Speaker 6: And they're related, they're so stoked. I'm the best thing
- 14:45Speaker 6: that ever happened to them.
- 14:46Speaker 7: That's nice.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I think they're Yeah. I mean, do you think they're
- 14:50Speaker 2: related because they don't fully understand what's going on or
- 14:53Speaker 2: what your I think.
- 14:53Speaker 1: That's a solid part of it.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Yes, I think that a decent amount of my client
- 14:58Speaker 6: list are people who don't understand what's happening.
- 15:01Speaker 7: I was gonna say, I've always had a question with commercials.
- 15:04Speaker 7: Sometimes commercial audition, you know, the person doesn't speak. Say
- 15:08Speaker 7: it's somebody riding a teacup ride and it's a Disney
- 15:11Speaker 7: World commercial or something. Yeah, how do you do how
- 15:16Speaker 7: do you watch an audition for it? How do you
- 15:18Speaker 7: ask somebody audition for that?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Well, you would be surprised, you'd be surprised at how
- 15:23Speaker 1: not to do that because a lot of people don't
- 15:25Speaker 1: know how to do it. You know, you get.
- 15:27Speaker 6: They we send out the directions. You know, it's walk
- 15:31Speaker 6: in front of the screen, act like you're on a
- 15:34Speaker 6: tea cup ride and walk off, and you know how
- 15:37Speaker 6: many people can't do that?
- 15:39Speaker 7: So simple, it's as simple as in the instructions.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I would imagine Nancy. I I was thinking, you know,
- 15:45Speaker 5: have you ever run into the situation which is maybe
- 15:47Speaker 5: an occupational hazard for how you sign your clients that
- 15:50Speaker 5: you say, hey, we got a Horizon commercial for you,
- 15:52Speaker 5: and they say, oh, I was just visiting. You know,
- 15:56Speaker 5: I live in Reno. I was, I was in LA
- 15:59Speaker 5: for the weekend, and you know I can't go to that.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Does that ever happen to you?
- 16:03Speaker 1: It happens all the time, all the time.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I'll give them the dates, I'll give them the location,
- 16:08Speaker 6: and they'll simply forget.
- 16:10Speaker 2: They'll simply that's I gotta say. Just a little note
- 16:13Speaker 2: for actors. If you're listening, book out. Book out with
- 16:16Speaker 2: your agent. If you live Reno, book out, just book out.
- 16:20Speaker 1: The people who live in Reno never book out. The
- 16:22Speaker 1: people who live in Alabama never book out. And it's
- 16:26Speaker 1: crazy because you know, they get these great deals where
- 16:29Speaker 1: I'll say, hey.
- 16:30Speaker 6: You booked this commercial. It shoots in Sacramento. You're gonna
- 16:34Speaker 6: make one hundred dollars.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Fly on out. Here and they won't do it. They
- 16:39Speaker 1: won't and it's just because they don't want it enough,
- 16:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Some people don't want it enough.
- 16:43Speaker 1: And that's some people just don't want it enough.
- 16:45Speaker 5: That's a question for you, guys. What do you do
- 16:46Speaker 5: with a client who doesn't want it enough? What do
- 16:49Speaker 5: you do? Well?
- 16:50Speaker 2: Greg, what about you?
- 16:51Speaker 3: I'll tell you what I fucking do. I bring them
- 16:53Speaker 3: back to the basics.
- 16:54Speaker 8: I send him a little PDF called Who's On First.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And I get him back in the gang.
- 17:01Speaker 10: Baby.
- 17:02Speaker 8: It's just like I mean, Glenn, it's similar to Mozart.
- 17:05Speaker 8: We learned from the greats. And when I have a
- 17:07Speaker 8: client that it's just hitting up against some new material
- 17:10Speaker 8: and I'm losing I'm losing motivation and I'm losing them.
- 17:13Speaker 8: I'm losing them in the sight of these big paychecks
- 17:16Speaker 8: coming in. I'm like, we gotta get you back to
- 17:19Speaker 8: the basics.
- 17:20Speaker 7: And you find that that that usually works. That's traditionally
- 17:23Speaker 7: a two person script, right, but you find it works for.
- 17:26Speaker 6: One person, a very fast paced it's a great monologue.
- 17:31Speaker 7: Yes, in a way, it's a great monologue.
- 17:35Speaker 8: I find it's a great solo piece, a great ensemble piece,
- 17:41Speaker 8: I find that the piece is malleable, and that's why
- 17:45Speaker 8: I use it.
- 17:45Speaker 7: Yeah, any amount of it's very yeah, any tone, and
- 17:50Speaker 7: it can be very tragic if you look out it
- 17:52Speaker 7: through the lens of someone who has Alzheimer's.
- 17:54Speaker 4: You know, first who is who is?
- 18:00Speaker 1: You look at it from the baseball you know, and
- 18:03Speaker 1: it could be from any.
- 18:04Speaker 8: High concept high concept guys. It works for my concepts
- 18:07Speaker 8: of it's all over. So I'll say, I go back
- 18:08Speaker 8: to the basics. And also, I never have a problem sitting.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Somebody down in my office. We have we have a
- 18:15Speaker 3: talk because I wrap.
- 18:15Speaker 8: I don't know, let's talk about different types of client
- 18:17Speaker 8: tells here, because I rap clients bringing in six figures.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Off one day.
- 18:22Speaker 7: Wow.
- 18:23Speaker 3: So so it's it's they lose.
- 18:25Speaker 8: Sight and the only thing that will get them back
- 18:28Speaker 8: is going back to the basics.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know, I I've I've definitely run into that,
- 18:33Speaker 5: I uh lucked into representing this woman Adele. I don't
- 18:39Speaker 5: know if you've ever heard.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Of her, Yeah for sure, Yeah, yeah, I think I've
- 18:42Speaker 2: heard of adel Yeah, a woman.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Yeah, you guys heard of her. She is a woman
- 18:45Speaker 5: and she sings good.
- 18:47Speaker 1: A right, right, that's ringing a bell.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I you know. I no longer represent her. But
- 18:54Speaker 5: when I was representing her, it was difficult because she'd
- 18:58Speaker 5: bring in a song and I would say, I just
- 19:00Speaker 5: don't get it. That's what I'd say, over and over.
- 19:03Speaker 5: I just don't It doesn't ring a belt. I can't
- 19:07Speaker 5: take it in.
- 19:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:08Speaker 5: It was a white noise for me. And that's when
- 19:10Speaker 5: I realized she was the right client for me. Right
- 19:13Speaker 5: because for some reason she wasn't registering with me. You
- 19:16Speaker 5: let her go. It was mutual, it was it certainly was.
- 19:22Speaker 5: She She did tell me, you know, this isn't working out,
- 19:24Speaker 5: and I said, I, you know, somebody told me. That's
- 19:27Speaker 5: what she said on the phone, and my assistant had
- 19:29Speaker 5: to kind of transcribe it because I couldn't hear her.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I don't know what was happening.
- 19:33Speaker 2: It's just an issue. Maybe that she was on mute,
- 19:35Speaker 2: you couldn't hear the song that she was singing, or.
- 19:38Speaker 5: We who's to say. Maybe the entire time I represented her,
- 19:42Speaker 5: my computer was on mute. I don't know, and some.
- 19:45Speaker 7: Clients that's an occupational hazard. Unfortunately, it's you know.
- 19:50Speaker 5: My Lenovo usually comes through really well. I have a
- 19:53Speaker 5: Lenovo computer. It's the best computer that is out there,
- 19:57Speaker 5: and it has a touchscreen. But the problem is if
- 19:59Speaker 5: you touch it too hard, it turns the entire screen
- 20:02Speaker 5: Blue's actually have to shut it down, and it just
- 20:06Speaker 5: it could be difficult. Have you guys ever gone through that.
- 20:08Speaker 7: With my Lenovo? Yeah, for sure.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yeah, with my Lenovo it's the same way.
- 20:13Speaker 7: Yeah. I was gonna say. This is actually another kind
- 20:16Speaker 7: of tip for actors, is you know, keep in mind
- 20:18Speaker 7: that sometimes we're just not listening to it because it's
- 20:20Speaker 7: on mute, and you got to kind of prepare for that.
- 20:24Speaker 5: You guys have to be ready.
- 20:25Speaker 6: In fact, you have to impress us. You know, there's
- 20:27Speaker 6: no excuses. Oh, your agent's computer is on mute.
- 20:30Speaker 7: I'm sorry.
- 20:31Speaker 1: You have to deal with.
- 20:32Speaker 4: That break through.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Do you break.
- 20:34Speaker 8: Through the break I'll tell you. I'll tell you this,
- 20:38Speaker 8: I I I find I tell my clients. Oh, sometimes
- 20:41Speaker 8: you're not the right type, right, It's not about your talent,
- 20:43Speaker 8: it's also about our Lenovo mutes.
- 20:46Speaker 7: M Sometimes you send it in at a time when
- 20:50Speaker 7: my Lenovo is muted. Now that's just not a match
- 20:54Speaker 7: made in Ovan.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Sometimes my Lenovo crashes and so I can't look at
- 20:59Speaker 6: your headshot and if you send me a headshot during
- 21:01Speaker 6: the time where the screen is blue, I'm sorry, you're
- 21:04Speaker 6: not getting that job.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Yeah, unless we're booking Blue Man Group.
- 21:08Speaker 1: You know, we all book the Blue Man by the way.
- 21:13Speaker 7: Actually considered a counter It's considered a counter the counterwork.
- 21:19Speaker 5: We all. That's the last time I saw all of
- 21:21Speaker 5: us together in the same room was when we were
- 21:22Speaker 5: negotiating the contracts for the Blue Man Group.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And that was a tough day. I think that was
- 21:27Speaker 2: a really tough day for.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Talking about contract day, my contract.
- 21:30Speaker 1: There were tweens in the in the Blue Man Group.
- 21:32Speaker 2: You wouldn't think so legally, there shouldn't be.
- 21:34Speaker 7: No it's in this summer man, you think. Man, but
- 21:38Speaker 7: it's anything.
- 21:39Speaker 2: It's boys, it's young girls, it's whatever you want.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I had a dog go out for the Blue Man Group.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think I remember that.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Let's talk contracts, let's talk negotiations.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Favorite.
- 21:53Speaker 8: Oh man, this is my this is the passion. This
- 21:56Speaker 8: is this is when you get a couple of agents
- 21:58Speaker 8: all together. Oh my god, I will never forget.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I had some agents over, some comedy agents over for
- 22:03Speaker 3: dinner party and Johnny Knoxville.
- 22:09Speaker 7: Terrific people don't know that fantastic agents.
- 22:11Speaker 3: He's a great agent.
- 22:14Speaker 2: He represents all the other jack ass.
- 22:17Speaker 7: Do you think they got the movie?
- 22:19Speaker 3: He's a great guy.
- 22:19Speaker 8: So I had a couple of those people over and
- 22:22Speaker 8: who else, ah name names, Sandra.
- 22:29Speaker 7: D I had okay, send me homemade.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yes, they don't know classic Hollywood, Am I right?
- 22:39Speaker 8: And uh, corduroy man, I know.
- 22:45Speaker 2: The agent just for corduroy pants and all all models
- 22:48Speaker 2: that way.
- 22:48Speaker 3: But anyway, I have these people over.
- 22:50Speaker 8: We're having dinner, and then the dinner ends, right, and
- 22:53Speaker 8: someone brings out Katan or something, and what do you
- 22:56Speaker 8: fucking know? We're not playing contan two hours in with
- 22:58Speaker 8: our pino noirs.
- 23:00Speaker 3: We're we are. We are negotiating contracts for fun.
- 23:04Speaker 7: Yeah, you give each other scenarios, you negotiate fake mold contracts.
- 23:10Speaker 8: And I'm like, look at this. You put a bunch
- 23:12Speaker 8: agents in a room. I wouldn't be surprised by the
- 23:14Speaker 8: end of this. If these people are watching us, we're
- 23:16Speaker 8: gonna start negotiating.
- 23:17Speaker 5: I want to do it right now for fun. Let's
- 23:19Speaker 5: let's make up a contract for fun.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Let's this is my favorite game.
- 23:22Speaker 5: I am hard for this.
- 23:24Speaker 2: This is awesome, Oh god, okay, I'll give it. Let's
- 23:27Speaker 2: say you've got three eleven or twelve year old kids
- 23:32Speaker 2: who play soccer usually, and two of them were boys.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Their voices dropped yet Yeah, let's say one of them's.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Voice that affects it. That affects the number.
- 23:43Speaker 7: They playing grass or like marble, Like are they doing
- 23:45Speaker 7: it on a field or is it kind of like
- 23:47Speaker 7: a kitchen island.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Situation and they're playing soccer on marble. Let's say they're
- 23:51Speaker 5: playing on marble.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Let's make it interesting. Let's let's get everybody is so
- 23:54Speaker 2: they're playing soccer on Marble. Let's say a big movie
- 23:57Speaker 2: comes through and they're rebooting I don't know this SpongeBob
- 24:00Speaker 2: SquarePants movie, and they say, we want these kids for
- 24:03Speaker 2: the soccer sce Scenekay, what are you telling the kids?
- 24:06Speaker 2: What are you telling Spongebod SquarePants movie?
- 24:09Speaker 1: This is like a math problem.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Okay, and I'll give you the I'll abcd. Okay, here's
- 24:14Speaker 2: here's my offer. I'm SpongeBob SquarePants and I go, hey,
- 24:17Speaker 2: I want those I want those tweens. I want those
- 24:19Speaker 2: tweens in my movie. How would I pay you thirty
- 24:23Speaker 2: thousand dollars for all.
- 24:25Speaker 7: Okay, I go firstly, these are three separate kids. They
- 24:28Speaker 7: got three separate contracts. You don't lump them all in.
- 24:31Speaker 7: What if one that's a problem, that's one off. One's
- 24:33Speaker 7: a thinker, not on my count, No way.
- 24:37Speaker 6: Yeah, if if I were in their shoes, I would
- 24:40Speaker 6: you know, I negotiate for like you said, then I
- 24:43Speaker 6: negotiate for them individually. I would open strong with a
- 24:47Speaker 6: fee of three hundred dollars apiece, and anything anything above
- 24:53Speaker 6: that is you know, it's a bonus.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 5: And I'm gonna come in and I'm gonna say I
- 25:00Speaker 5: need them to control the rights to their own voices.
- 25:04Speaker 4: So I need to make sure that nobody owns the voices.
- 25:07Speaker 5: And that includes remixes, and that includes memes, that.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Includes TikTok clips.
- 25:14Speaker 5: So if their voice is taken out and added to
- 25:17Speaker 5: some little song, some doja cat thing, i'ma do or whatever,
- 25:21Speaker 5: and it's put on TikTok, we get a percentage of
- 25:23Speaker 5: every single time that song is used.
- 25:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:27Speaker 5: Yeah, And then I'm also gonna get a commitment of
- 25:29Speaker 5: eighteen songs to be put in the show.
- 25:33Speaker 8: I'll come straight in right under that, and I'll say
- 25:35Speaker 8: I want toy rights. I ain't doing shit all my
- 25:38Speaker 8: Adam Sandler movies. I need toy rights up at the front.
- 25:42Speaker 7: Wow. And do those movies get toys?
- 25:45Speaker 3: No, but it's good just in case toys.
- 25:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Yeah, but but I got that one there. I got
- 25:50Speaker 5: a Hubie Halloween stuffed animal.
- 25:53Speaker 7: Uncut, A cool toy.
- 25:56Speaker 8: Oh that was a fidget spinner. It was a uncut
- 25:58Speaker 8: Gems fidget spinner. And thank god you never fucking I
- 26:01Speaker 8: have a post it about my computer in my office.
- 26:03Speaker 3: It says, don't forget about the toys.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I think I have that spanglish fairy that flies.
- 26:09Speaker 7: God.
- 26:10Speaker 8: That was That was a close one. I almost thought
- 26:12Speaker 8: this is a TAILI one movie. Why would we have toys?
- 26:16Speaker 8: Thank god I did that.
- 26:19Speaker 4: And of course the Punchdruck love bop it.
- 26:23Speaker 7: Oh, I love that classic.
- 26:25Speaker 2: I mean, we did a deal with the dollars.
- 26:27Speaker 1: But that shit, love it it drunkend.
- 26:32Speaker 2: So anyway, do you guys want to hear what actually happened?
- 26:34Speaker 2: Because that was actually a real life story that happens.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Let's hear it.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Let's hear it.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm representing these three kids playing soccer. A guy
- 26:41Speaker 2: comes up says, I want those three kids in this
- 26:43Speaker 2: SpongeBob Square Beds movie. I'll give you thirty thousand and total.
- 26:46Speaker 2: I say, fuck you, get out of my sight six
- 26:49Speaker 2: million apiece or we walk right now. He says, okay,
- 26:54Speaker 2: I'm moving on. And we didn't close it, so it's
- 26:59Speaker 2: all right. You know, you don't win them all. It
- 27:01Speaker 2: was kind of sad for those kids because they are
- 27:03Speaker 2: very poor.
- 27:03Speaker 7: Yeah, but that's another trick of the trade. Like if
- 27:06Speaker 7: you're an actor, if you're a child out there, just
- 27:08Speaker 7: keep in mind. You know, we don't sometimes make the deal,
- 27:12Speaker 7: and that's just something you got to push through.
- 27:15Speaker 6: And another thing I would say to a struggling actor
- 27:17Speaker 6: out there is if you can try to be rich,
- 27:21Speaker 6: try to come from as hard as you can.
- 27:25Speaker 2: It makes our job so much easier. It makes it
- 27:27Speaker 2: helps us so much.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Of it'll make you more calm too in the room.
- 27:31Speaker 6: Right, And if you have to go run out to
- 27:33Speaker 6: your barista job because you need to pay the rent,
- 27:36Speaker 6: I can't send you to audition for a commercial for tampons.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I can't do that.
- 27:41Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I gotta say too. You know, if
- 27:45Speaker 7: you're not able to spend the time kind of like
- 27:48Speaker 7: slipping and sliding sauces all over your counter because you're like, guys,
- 27:51Speaker 7: kind of waste all the sauce or whatever. You know,
- 27:54Speaker 7: those sauce costs money. I don't know what to tell you.
- 27:57Speaker 7: You know, practice takes, practice thinks perfect. You know.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I also feel like counter space in general costs a
- 28:03Speaker 2: lot of money to have kind of a floating island.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Talking about this all that. I'm at UTI United Industry
- 28:10Speaker 7: and we're talking about this all the time there. Counter
- 28:13Speaker 7: space huge.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, by the way, love your company, Love you your
- 28:18Speaker 2: company huge.
- 28:20Speaker 8: I know some guys at U t I and I'll
- 28:22Speaker 8: say I think I started up at ut I, And
- 28:25Speaker 8: that'd be a fun question for everybody, uh.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I know, the beginning of an.
- 28:29Speaker 8: Agent's career always starts next to a copier or a
- 28:32Speaker 8: fax machine.
- 28:33Speaker 3: So let's all talk about where we got our first gig.
- 28:35Speaker 8: I started at the great and wondrous ut I.
- 28:40Speaker 5: You know, I started, and I'm still working at the
- 28:42Speaker 5: Industry Business Society I b S. And I am so
- 28:46Speaker 5: happy to be there still. That's how I got so
- 28:48Speaker 5: many clients, because they've had I b S on their
- 28:51Speaker 5: roster for a long time and I willed into it.
- 28:54Speaker 6: Yeah, amazing well, I of course started out as an
- 28:57Speaker 6: assistant at st D, which is as we know, Star
- 29:02Speaker 6: Total domination.
- 29:04Speaker 2: You know, I've been uh with tweens for actually quite
- 29:07Speaker 2: a long time. I started at People's Organization of Youth POOEY,
- 29:15Speaker 2: and you know, they were great, they were great, they
- 29:17Speaker 2: were not exactly what I was looking for. I'm glad
- 29:19Speaker 2: I finally went independent. But you know, POOEY is great. Yeah,
- 29:23Speaker 2: and I know a lot of people still there. We
- 29:25Speaker 2: have tons of connections and yeah, there's.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Some great people at POOEY.
- 29:29Speaker 7: There's oh some of my best friends are at POOY.
- 29:31Speaker 7: You know, I mean the relationships between agents, it's it's
- 29:34Speaker 7: so interconnecting it. You know, everybody knows somebody. So for me,
- 29:37Speaker 7: I was at Huge People Venturized HPV. That's where I started.
- 29:41Speaker 7: Because my field is relatively new, counter counter TikTokers, you know.
- 29:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I was.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Doing relatively I feel like brand new or has it
- 29:48Speaker 2: is it? Does it have a nice history yet that
- 29:50Speaker 2: I don't know about it.
- 29:50Speaker 7: There's been a history, it's just never been filmed of
- 29:54Speaker 7: people making stuff on their counters and like cooking and
- 29:57Speaker 7: things like that.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Yeah, not sorry, not the general history of people making.
- 30:02Speaker 1: About putting spreading things on your kitchen.
- 30:06Speaker 5: Exactly missing moment for me. I had no clue about
- 30:09Speaker 5: any of this.
- 30:10Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, there's been very Sometimes it's just people cutting
- 30:13Speaker 7: stuff on their counter like normal food, and then there's
- 30:16Speaker 7: this spreadables. There's the people making spreads and stuff on
- 30:19Speaker 7: their counters, and it's just people weren't filming it. People
- 30:21Speaker 7: weren't taking notice. And you know, that's where people like
- 30:23Speaker 7: me coming and go, Okay, big vision. You know, I'm
- 30:25Speaker 7: at I'm at Huge People Ventures and I'm like, I'm
- 30:28Speaker 7: seeing something huge. I'm seeing something huge. Yeah, and maybe
- 30:32Speaker 7: it's too huge for huge people ventures. So that's what
- 30:34Speaker 7: I have over TI.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Oh wow, And I feel like that's a good move.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I feel like that's a really good move.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I don't want to step on HPV, but I feel
- 30:42Speaker 2: like UTI is a better move.
- 30:45Speaker 7: I agree, U T I is way better than h period.
- 30:49Speaker 4: I would rank it for me.
- 30:53Speaker 2: U T I, HPV pooeye wow police last.
- 30:59Speaker 1: But I stand why it's at the bottom.
- 31:01Speaker 4: You're right, STD is at the bottom. I'm sorry, I don't.
- 31:04Speaker 7: Know is did you drop the D for industries or SDI.
- 31:12Speaker 6: That was part of the reason why we failed because Stars,
- 31:16Speaker 6: Total Industries took over and became the socially accepted, real
- 31:21Speaker 6: legitimate agency.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Well, here here's an interesting question from the fish bowl.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I guess for me, and I'm really interested. You know,
- 31:27Speaker 2: we talked about where we started, kind of like at
- 31:29Speaker 2: the agencies, But why did you fall into the agent
- 31:31Speaker 2: field that you fell into? You know, we all kind
- 31:34Speaker 2: of come from these different things, and that's a really
- 31:37Speaker 2: good question, Fishbowl.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Can I sign you.
- 31:43Speaker 7: Please? Hip bucket.
- 31:45Speaker 8: I'll tell you that Fishbowill probably do a better job
- 31:48Speaker 8: books than some.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Of my clients.
- 31:50Speaker 5: Tell me about it. Tell you about Fishball. How do
- 31:52Speaker 5: you look at blue Makeup?
- 31:55Speaker 2: Are you eleven or twelve?
- 31:56Speaker 5: Are you eleven or twelve? Fish bull?
- 31:58Speaker 7: Well, my answer to that is, you know, I see connections,
- 32:01Speaker 7: you know, so I see these people that are making
- 32:05Speaker 7: a trifle on their counter or something, and I think,
- 32:08Speaker 7: you know, because the way my clients make a lot
- 32:10Speaker 7: of their money, you know, not they're not. Some of
- 32:12Speaker 7: them are booking sketches, you know, our world specials and
- 32:15Speaker 7: stuff like that, big movies, things like that that TikTokers
- 32:18Speaker 7: sure get.
- 32:20Speaker 5: I saw, by the way, I saw She the Crumb's
- 32:22Speaker 5: Hour special on Netflix.
- 32:23Speaker 4: It was you liked it, You like that?
- 32:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I couldn't believe you guys had so many different
- 32:27Speaker 5: counters on that.
- 32:28Speaker 7: Oh yeah, that was my idea. Different heights, different counters
- 32:32Speaker 7: is marble.
- 32:33Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know, you'd never see her face even once.
- 32:36Speaker 6: And I don't know if Netflix has ever done that before.
- 32:38Speaker 7: Yeah, that was my idea too, because I was like,
- 32:40Speaker 7: we just got focused on the counter. She that's her
- 32:41Speaker 7: whole thing.
- 32:43Speaker 5: Yeah, it's she's got She's also got her face. She
- 32:45Speaker 5: always looks like she's just seen a ghost.
- 32:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 32:50Speaker 7: She doesn't like to be on film, and I make her.
- 32:52Speaker 7: But the thing is that my clients, most of the
- 32:56Speaker 7: money they get is from spawn con.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Okay, we're all familiar.
- 33:02Speaker 10: Yeah me.
- 33:03Speaker 7: So I see, you know, a client that's making a
- 33:07Speaker 7: sevent cheese lasagnia that's not cooked on a counter. I
- 33:10Speaker 7: hook them up with Huggies, you know, or something to
- 33:14Speaker 7: promote diapers, you know, and then they get to way
- 33:16Speaker 7: the diaper in the video. I'll having a little fun,
- 33:19Speaker 7: and then Huggies gets a little boost and they al
- 33:22Speaker 7: all money.
- 33:22Speaker 5: You know.
- 33:23Speaker 7: I see those connections where other people might not where
- 33:27Speaker 7: I frankly, I don't think the stoves people see that
- 33:29Speaker 7: stuff as much.
- 33:30Speaker 2: No, I feel that too. I'm like, I feel like
- 33:33Speaker 2: I have the same thing where I see those connections.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You know, like spaon con is a huge world in
- 33:38Speaker 2: the tween world, you know, because with TikTok and with Instagram,
- 33:42Speaker 2: We've got a bunch of tweens making more money than
- 33:45Speaker 2: I've literally any any if scene ever. Literally, I feel
- 33:50Speaker 2: so bad for David Geff and my old client. He's
- 33:52Speaker 2: just watching these tweens get million dollar paychecks almost every week.
- 33:56Speaker 2: I've got this kid, Jacob o Bakeup and he is
- 34:00Speaker 2: a huge, huge tween in the TikTok space. You know,
- 34:04Speaker 2: he plays soccer, he likes chess every once in a
- 34:07Speaker 2: while with his dad, and he's fucking rip. I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 2: this kid is hot. He's a hot kid. So you know,
- 34:13Speaker 2: the girls and the guys, they love him. He's very
- 34:17Speaker 2: nice but also kind of a bad boy. So you know,
- 34:21Speaker 2: we got macaroni and cheese coming in craft coming in
- 34:25Speaker 2: one point six million dollars for this twelve year old
- 34:31Speaker 2: to pour mac and cheese on his body. And I
- 34:34Speaker 2: was like, we'll take it. No counter offer.
- 34:37Speaker 7: Hey, I'm always making counter offers.
- 34:43Speaker 4: Hey can I use that that's a funny joke.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Okay, Kelsey, you gotta gift for comedy. Comedy, comedy comedy, Katie,
- 34:53Speaker 3: Will you.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Write that joke down so I can laugh at it later.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Thank you, Katie.
- 34:59Speaker 6: To answer a question earlier, I didn't always want to
- 35:04Speaker 6: be specifically this kind of agent.
- 35:06Speaker 1: No way, I really know what it was. Well, so
- 35:09Speaker 1: I actually was a bit of a child actor myself,
- 35:13Speaker 1: and you know I was. I was up there.
- 35:16Speaker 6: I was selling gerber I was selling Huggies, I was
- 35:19Speaker 6: selling all those things. And in I noticed that, like
- 35:22Speaker 6: the acting thing, though I kept getting booked, was never
- 35:25Speaker 6: really clicking because you know, I kept trying to take
- 35:29Speaker 6: ten percent of the other child actors money. I would
- 35:32Speaker 6: walk up to them, I would say, how much did
- 35:34Speaker 6: you make? I would like a little bit of that.
- 35:37Speaker 6: That's really an agent.
- 35:39Speaker 7: That's really for actors out there. Sometimes the thing that
- 35:42Speaker 7: you're trying is not the thing you're meant to do.
- 35:44Speaker 1: That's a beautiful exactly exactly.
- 35:47Speaker 7: Maybe you're trying to kick a basketball and it's like no, no, no,
- 35:51Speaker 7: maybe I'm in the wrong sport.
- 35:53Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 35:55Speaker 2: That's such a good because I do have a lot
- 35:56Speaker 2: of kids that kick basketballs and I go, this is
- 35:59Speaker 2: supposed to be soccer. What are you doing?
- 36:00Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 36:01Speaker 5: You know soccer, right, yeah, I it's so funny. I,
- 36:06Speaker 5: you know, obviously lucked into the best career of my life.
- 36:10Speaker 5: But before this, I was a teacher. A teacher for
- 36:15Speaker 5: about thirty five years. I taught eighth grade California history specifically,
- 36:21Speaker 5: and I lived in this apartment complex in Hacienda Heights,
- 36:25Speaker 5: and I saw this guy every now and then, and
- 36:28Speaker 5: he was really sweet, this old man who was always
- 36:30Speaker 5: in a hurry and opened the door for him as
- 36:32Speaker 5: he walked out and stuff like that. I found out
- 36:35Speaker 5: one day he had passed away. Turns out he was
- 36:38Speaker 5: the great David Dankelberg, one of the best agents of
- 36:43Speaker 5: our time. He lived a sad, disgusting life living alone
- 36:47Speaker 5: in this tiny apartment, and I guess I was the
- 36:50Speaker 5: only person who was ever nice to him. And he
- 36:54Speaker 5: left me his clients, which is why I got all
- 36:57Speaker 5: those clients.
- 36:59Speaker 7: And they stuck with you, and none of them had
- 37:02Speaker 7: this sort of thought, do I go with someone else,
- 37:06Speaker 7: or do I go with.
- 37:08Speaker 2: This man who shared an apartment complex.
- 37:13Speaker 5: He made a really beautiful, incredible video that he sent
- 37:19Speaker 5: to all of his clients on the night of.
- 37:22Speaker 2: His death, and do we have that?
- 37:24Speaker 5: We do have that.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Let's let's but if we could put it on the
- 37:28Speaker 3: pod it is.
- 37:30Speaker 5: It is intimate, but I you know, I'm an open
- 37:32Speaker 5: DVD case. I really am, so I'd love to play.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Let's play it.
- 37:37Speaker 5: As I breathing my last breath. I want to tell
- 37:45Speaker 5: all of you, my clients, there's this wonderful guy who
- 37:49Speaker 5: lives in my building.
- 37:52Speaker 4: His name is Glad, and I'm going to give your
- 37:56Speaker 4: careers to him.
- 37:59Speaker 5: Well, wow, shut up, shut up.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Oh ship, the dog ripped my fucking ivy out.
- 38:07Speaker 10: Ah the fuck.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Fuck mister Tickleberry, mister Tickleberry.
- 38:17Speaker 11: There's still time.
- 38:19Speaker 1: There's still time. Breathe damn it.
- 38:21Speaker 2: We should have stopped that dog.
- 38:22Speaker 5: We should have stopped that dog.
- 38:26Speaker 3: There's four assistants in here, and he's dying.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Anyways, that video goes on for like, it goes on
- 38:31Speaker 5: for like thirty more minutes. It's so sad. The nurse
- 38:34Speaker 5: didn't even know his real last name. It's so sad.
- 38:37Speaker 7: It's so sad and crazy.
- 38:40Speaker 1: You know, you're just constantly disrespected, You're.
- 38:43Speaker 5: Kind, and when I found out that I had gotten
- 38:47Speaker 5: this thing, you know, I was surprised, but I said,
- 38:50Speaker 5: why not? You know, this doesn't seem like any sort
- 38:53Speaker 5: of curse or anything like that. That seems like a
- 38:55Speaker 5: good opportunity. And that's how are you doing? Now? How
- 38:59Speaker 5: am I doing? Go ahead?
- 39:00Speaker 7: I say, that's just another tip out there. Sometimes if
- 39:03Speaker 7: you just go why not? You know, you know, just
- 39:06Speaker 7: say why not to something that happens to maybe you do?
- 39:09Speaker 7: Oh your life?
- 39:10Speaker 8: I love that, Kelsey. I tell that to my clients
- 39:12Speaker 8: all the time, who Halloween didn't work out well? And
- 39:14Speaker 8: I look at him and I go, why not?
- 39:17Speaker 5: What do you say? What do you say?
- 39:19Speaker 2: He said?
- 39:19Speaker 10: Why not?
- 39:21Speaker 7: Oh so he okay, yeah it's little. Yeah, yeah, you
- 39:27Speaker 7: really you're really like echolically satisfying.
- 39:30Speaker 8: You like, oh yeah, I think I think art lives
- 39:32Speaker 8: in repetition. Okay, all of art?
- 39:37Speaker 3: Why do we love the chorus because we just heard
- 39:39Speaker 3: it before?
- 39:41Speaker 1: You know, you're not actually very profound?
- 39:43Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's that's what we say in the music industry,
- 39:46Speaker 5: or will I'm gonna say that now that you said take.
- 39:48Speaker 2: It well, I'm actually really interested, Greg, How did you
- 39:51Speaker 2: get into it?
- 39:51Speaker 8: I I was actually in mid school a couple of
- 39:56Speaker 8: billion years ago, and I was working a barriisted job
- 40:02Speaker 8: to get by, and it was rough, and I was
- 40:05Speaker 8: pissed at some woman who is rude to me at
- 40:08Speaker 8: the counter at a coffee bean and I spit in
- 40:11Speaker 8: her coffee and she saw me do it.
- 40:16Speaker 3: She grabbed me from behind and hypnotized me.
- 40:20Speaker 8: She put a curse on me, essentially, and she said,
- 40:24Speaker 8: you have to do the worst job known to me
- 40:26Speaker 8: in kind, and that's be an agent.
- 40:31Speaker 5: And that's a bit I do.
- 40:34Speaker 2: But then I work out with my client.
- 40:37Speaker 5: That's funny. I thought you were being serious.
- 40:40Speaker 7: I also thought you were being serious. That's good acting,
- 40:43Speaker 7: that's good.
- 40:43Speaker 1: You know, to be an agent, you have to kind
- 40:46Speaker 1: of know. You gotta kind of be a good actor too.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Yeah, let's talk about this.
- 40:49Speaker 1: You have that because you cracked me up. You fooled me.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Oh thank you. Well, I'll tell you I don't have
- 40:54Speaker 3: an honest bone in my body.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Can I ask you guys some advice? Maybe this will
- 40:58Speaker 5: help me out to talk about honesty and lying. When
- 41:02Speaker 5: I lie to my clients, it hurts my feelings, it
- 41:04Speaker 5: hurts myself. Do you guys have any tips on how
- 41:08Speaker 5: to stop yourself from hurting when you lie?
- 41:12Speaker 2: Well, look, You're just gonna get used to it. It's
- 41:14Speaker 2: just kind of a cost of the of the field.
- 41:17Speaker 2: It's nothing. The pain never goes away, but you learn
- 41:19Speaker 2: to live with it and you learn it like it. Yeah,
- 41:21Speaker 2: I would say the.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Pain has gone away for me.
- 41:24Speaker 6: I'm approached a decent amount of times and a company
- 41:28Speaker 6: will come to me and they'll say, hey, we'd really
- 41:32Speaker 6: like to see this actor Don Johnson come out for
- 41:35Speaker 6: our Horizon commercial. And I'll say, is it union? And
- 41:37Speaker 6: they'll say yes. And so I will not tell my
- 41:40Speaker 6: client about it because I can't let that happen. And
- 41:42Speaker 6: after a while, you take pleasure in it, you know
- 41:45Speaker 6: what I mean.
- 41:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I can't believe Don Johnson does non union commercials. Well, yeah,
- 41:52Speaker 5: Johnson very famous, Yeah, Miami Vice huge, pretty popular, father
- 41:59Speaker 5: of the go to Johnson.
- 42:00Speaker 7: Wait wait now, Nancy, were you singing Don Johnson D
- 42:04Speaker 7: O and ur D A W N.
- 42:07Speaker 1: I just thought that he was a guy on my roster.
- 42:10Speaker 1: I didn't. This is news to me. If he's in
- 42:12Speaker 1: the union, we gotta have a.
- 42:14Speaker 7: Talk, you know, we gotta have a huge talk.
- 42:16Speaker 1: We have to have a huge discussion.
- 42:18Speaker 4: Well, here's another question.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Pensil in a discussion with John Johnson, and then Don
- 42:23Speaker 1: Johnson right after, and then Don Johnson right after. Make
- 42:28Speaker 1: it a full afternoon. Thank you, Katie.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Well and well, the other question, what do you do
- 42:32Speaker 4: when your clients lie to you? Oh?
- 42:35Speaker 2: Well, this is a good question.
- 42:37Speaker 5: You know.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I'll answer both because you know, with eleven thousand clients,
- 42:42Speaker 2: it's tough to make them each feel special, and the
- 42:44Speaker 2: only way to make them feel special is to lie
- 42:46Speaker 2: to lie, you know, And I tell them lies every
- 42:49Speaker 2: time when I signed them, when they're on the cusp
- 42:51Speaker 2: of eleven, usually ten and a half, I go, we're
- 42:53Speaker 2: gonna be together for a very long time. Yeah, and
- 42:56Speaker 2: that I am lying through my teeth. They are gone
- 42:58Speaker 2: in two years, on the age of thirteen. Sometimes during
- 43:02Speaker 2: their bar mitzvahs, when they're becoming boys or bot mitzs,
- 43:05Speaker 2: when they're becoming women. You know, gone, I cut them
- 43:08Speaker 2: right there. And when a kid lies to me, I
- 43:14Speaker 2: fucking flip because you can always tell when those fuckers
- 43:18Speaker 2: are lying. You know. Kids don't have good They are
- 43:21Speaker 2: the worst at lyning. They have terrible tells. Yeah, Oh
- 43:26Speaker 2: my gosh. I had this kid the other day and
- 43:29Speaker 2: I was sending him out for a little bit of
- 43:31Speaker 2: a rugby commercial. You know, it's a Haines rugby commercial
- 43:34Speaker 2: where we have all these twelve year old boys running
- 43:35Speaker 2: around in underwear playing rugby.
- 43:37Speaker 7: Just sounds normal to me.
- 43:40Speaker 2: And one of one of the boys says, I feel sick.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I feel sick, And I go, really, what are you
- 43:46Speaker 2: sick with? And he says, it's just like a bad
- 43:48Speaker 2: tummy ache. And I swear to God, I fucking lost
- 43:51Speaker 2: it all this kid, because I knew exactly what he
- 43:53Speaker 2: wanted to do. He wanted to go out to the
- 43:55Speaker 2: movies with his friends. And I don't want to name names.
- 43:58Speaker 2: I don't want to name my client out because you
- 44:00Speaker 2: know he's still my client. But I will say, Pat,
- 44:03Speaker 2: if you're listening, and any person that's listening, don't lie
- 44:07Speaker 2: to your agent. If you if you say you can
- 44:09Speaker 2: make a Haines commercial callback, then make the Hanes commercial callback.
- 44:14Speaker 2: No not, but.
- 44:16Speaker 3: My god, money's gonna lie in there.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Money is on the line.
- 44:21Speaker 8: Money, Oh I tell my clients, Oh my god, money's
- 44:25Speaker 8: on the line in that.
- 44:26Speaker 2: The mind games that you have to play with your clients.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Sometimes a lot.
- 44:30Speaker 6: Of times they come to me and they say, my
- 44:32Speaker 6: casting frontier account won't log in.
- 44:37Speaker 1: I mean, it's disgusting. It's honestly, what.
- 44:41Speaker 8: Are they trying to cover up when they say that
- 44:45Speaker 8: this is so interesting?
- 44:46Speaker 1: I just know they're on that thing. I know they are,
- 44:50Speaker 1: and I hate being disrespected.
- 44:53Speaker 7: They should in case there's anyone out there that's you know,
- 44:57Speaker 7: I'm in counter food stuff and you know, how do
- 45:00Speaker 7: I deal with my reps, lying and stuffs? Just like
- 45:03Speaker 7: I gotta be honest when I signed a client, I've
- 45:05Speaker 7: got to say, I'm like, I signed one client, I'm
- 45:08Speaker 7: kind of signing seventy five, and that's that Cannabians or whatever.
- 45:11Speaker 7: Each being in that Cannabians. You know, you're they're of
- 45:14Speaker 7: my real clients my clients.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Do you represent food as well?
- 45:18Speaker 7: Not yet, I'm kind of working there. Oh nice, But
- 45:21Speaker 7: right now it's the people that handle the food. But
- 45:24Speaker 7: I kind of look at them all this food and
- 45:26Speaker 7: it becomes a little easier to kind of you know,
- 45:28Speaker 7: the commodities. You know that beans, Tommy, Tommy needs a
- 45:34Speaker 7: Tommy needs to pick an. He's food, he needs a
- 45:37Speaker 7: concentration stand.
- 45:38Speaker 8: But you know, well, I represent string cheese because she's
- 45:42Speaker 8: a funny gal and I can put you guys in touch, she's.
- 45:46Speaker 7: She is funny now and now would be she's food
- 45:50Speaker 7: and she's food, yeah a little.
- 45:52Speaker 5: I love the little burlesque acts she does when she
- 45:55Speaker 5: takes a little piece of her cell phone, she.
- 45:56Speaker 7: Takes the she takes the dark yellow off and leaves
- 46:00Speaker 7: just the light yellow.
- 46:03Speaker 3: I wish you could have think she was on first?
- 46:06Speaker 5: Her?
- 46:06Speaker 3: Who's on first? In our general was?
- 46:08Speaker 5: I think we have a I think we actually have
- 46:10Speaker 5: a tape of that.
- 46:11Speaker 11: Who's on first?
- 46:13Speaker 7: No?
- 46:13Speaker 11: I mean the fella's name?
- 46:16Speaker 6: Yes?
- 46:16Speaker 11: Who who?
- 46:18Speaker 1: No?
- 46:19Speaker 11: I mean the person playing the bass?
- 46:22Speaker 2: Yes?
- 46:22Speaker 5: Who?
- 46:23Speaker 11: Who?
- 46:24Speaker 1: What are you talking about? No?
- 46:27Speaker 11: What's on second?
- 46:29Speaker 7: What?
- 46:30Speaker 1: No?
- 46:30Speaker 11: I mean, what's the player on second? Shall I keep going?
- 46:38Speaker 7: Boys?
- 46:39Speaker 5: Got?
- 46:39Speaker 3: Is she a talent?
- 46:40Speaker 1: Or what?
- 46:41Speaker 7: Wow?
- 46:42Speaker 5: Was that you in the background like making noises.
- 46:44Speaker 3: A little bit? Oh yeah, I gotta hang along. So
- 46:51Speaker 3: it's it's the classics. How can you not?
- 46:55Speaker 7: It's also nice, it's admirable you fol your generals keep everybody.
- 47:01Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I gotta do that.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I just a real quick no pressure chat that is recorded,
- 47:09Speaker 1: recorded and very.
- 47:10Speaker 5: Public, no pressure chat that you have to perform an
- 47:14Speaker 5: eighty year old comedy piece during.
- 47:17Speaker 8: Oh, it's very each other because then I uploaded on
- 47:21Speaker 8: their actors' access. I got their reels and I got there,
- 47:24Speaker 8: who's on first?
- 47:25Speaker 5: General?
- 47:26Speaker 7: Yeah? Where are you from? What's your family?
- 47:28Speaker 1: Like?
- 47:28Speaker 7: Please? Do who's on first? I get you?
- 47:32Speaker 5: This is all really helpful for me because, you know,
- 47:34Speaker 5: speaking of difficult clients, one of my clients, his name
- 47:37Speaker 5: is Pharrell. He keeps telling me that he's he's written
- 47:42Speaker 5: the song. Yeah, do you know him, he's a hat salesman.
- 47:46Speaker 7: Yeah, he so, he knows that he's a hat salesman.

- 49:30Speaker 5: an idiot. I've heard of happy. He was fucking with me.
- 49:34Speaker 5: I knew it.
- 49:34Speaker 2: It sounds more like a test if you would open it.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Now you can answer him back. Now you can go.
- 49:40Speaker 5: Don't fuck with me.
- 49:41Speaker 4: And here's what I do.
- 49:42Speaker 5: I have to I have to send a passive aggressive email,
- 49:44Speaker 5: which my old boss, the person who endowed me this job,
- 49:48Speaker 5: he left me a long list on how to send
- 49:50Speaker 5: a passive aggressive email. So I'll say thank you for
- 49:54Speaker 5: the song. This is not the one we agreed on.
- 49:57Speaker 5: Please advise.
- 50:00Speaker 2: That doesn't sound too passive.
- 50:02Speaker 7: That's passive. Whoa you're gonna call for all? A fucker?
- 50:05Speaker 5: Holy fuck? Why what're you gonna getting there?
- 50:10Speaker 2: So it feels like I'm getting the lights that they
- 50:14Speaker 2: want us to ask one last question? What is the
- 50:16Speaker 2: last piece of advice? The question like, yeah, it's right there,
- 50:20Speaker 2: it says, last question, what's the uh? What's the last
- 50:23Speaker 2: piece of advice you guys have for artists out there?
- 50:25Speaker 7: For you layers, layers, layers, layers. I don't want to
- 50:29Speaker 7: see single layer counter stuff I might see layers. Make
- 50:34Speaker 7: me a freaking crape cake, no oven on the count
- 50:39Speaker 7: on the counter, Make me a trifle, a loose free
- 50:42Speaker 7: form trifle, make me thirty layer bean deap. I don't know.
- 50:47Speaker 7: I'm not the artist. I'm just here to help you layers.
- 50:51Speaker 5: That's my advice, I would say, advice wise, I would
- 50:56Speaker 5: just say be kind and be patient. Yeah, and just
- 51:01Speaker 5: know that we're all trying. And if your agents are
- 51:04Speaker 5: screwing up, just like, just give them a second. Why
- 51:09Speaker 5: do you sound like a baby?
- 51:11Speaker 2: Are you?
- 51:12Speaker 5: I'm sorry? I'm not a baby?
- 51:18Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay.
- 51:19Speaker 7: For a second, I thought you were gonna like pull
- 51:21Speaker 7: off your skin and be a baby.
- 51:23Speaker 5: Or no, that would have been me.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Comedy comedy, comedy.
- 51:27Speaker 5: No, I'm an adult. I'm not a baby, but sometimes
- 51:30Speaker 5: I sound like one. Sometimes.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Oh, I get that, sure, I guess. Following that, my
- 51:36Speaker 2: advice is, don't fucking grow up. Don't don't grow up,
- 51:41Speaker 2: don't do it, stay young and and reach out to me.
- 51:46Speaker 2: If you're eleven or twelve.
- 51:47Speaker 6: I would say my advice would be do your absolute
- 51:51Speaker 6: best until you start to get recognized for it, in
- 51:55Speaker 6: which stop stop right until you get to that point
- 51:58Speaker 6: where you're consistently booking. Somebody is gonna come and approach
- 52:01Speaker 6: you and they're gonna say, do you want to be sacked?
- 52:03Speaker 7: Stop?
- 52:03Speaker 6: Stop, stop getting better, stop getting better, get really really good,
- 52:07Speaker 6: and then stay there.
- 52:09Speaker 7: Yeah. I think I think not going to a union
- 52:11Speaker 7: is a nice piece of advice.
- 52:12Speaker 8: I'd say word ploy, I'd say repetition, and I'd say botox.
- 52:21Speaker 3: That's what I'll say. Those three things are the holy
- 52:26Speaker 3: Trinity in my office. That's what I'll leave it at that.
- 52:29Speaker 3: And never give up.
- 52:31Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I guess that should be.
- 52:34Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I guess never give up.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, never give up?
- 52:37Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, I never give up.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Katie Pencilman some time to roll my eyes.
- 52:44Speaker 2: This has been artists and artist and arson artists answering
- 52:47Speaker 2: the question. Now, that's why they call it show bits.
