The hinge is a single line the disciples say when the crowd gets hungry and the day gets long: send them away. It sounds like the responsible call — it's late, there's no food, let everyone fend for themselves — but underneath the reasonable suggestion sits exhaustion, and a wish for the whole need to become someone else's problem.
