- 0:00Welcome along to this deep dive from Reform Thinking.
- 0:02Today we're looking at, well, a real classic.
- 0:06Specific encounters from John Bunyan's The Pilgrims Progress.
- 0:09Yes, we've got the text here. Some excerpts and also some
- 0:12helpful notes and study guides derive from it.
- 0:14And what we want to do is jump into a few key people Christian
- 0:18meets near the start of his walk.
- 0:21We want to unpack what Bunya's showing us about different ways
- 0:23people handle or maybe mishandle the spiritual path.
- 0:27What can these allegorical figures really show you about
- 0:30different spiritual states about seeking God?
- 0:32We're drawing it straight from Bunyan's text.
- 0:34OK, so let's set the scene. Christian is on his way,
- 0:37burdened, heading towards the Wicked gate.
- 0:41But pretty early on, Bunyan has some run into three men, and
- 0:45they are exactly making progress.
- 0:46Are they? No, not at all.
- 0:48They are fast asleep. Bunyan names them Simple Sloth
- 0:52and Presumption, and he describes their condition quite
- 0:55vividly. They're actually sleeping with
- 0:57irons like chains on their legs. And the location is, well, it's
- 1:01really bad. It's near a place called the
- 1:03Dead Sea and a gulf that has no bottom.
- 1:05That sounds incredibly precarious.
- 1:08Irons on their legs near a bottomless gulf.
- 1:10Yeah, and Bunyan adds this image.
- 1:12He says it's like they're sleeping on the top of a mast,
- 1:15you know, high up, totally unstable.
- 1:18Wow. Gives you a real sense of the
- 1:20danger they're in, even while asleep.
- 1:22Exactly. It's a picture of serious
- 1:25spiritual risk, but they seem completely unaware.
- 1:28Or maybe they just don't care. They're bound, they're exposed.
- 1:31And yet. They sleep.
- 1:33So what does Christian do? He sees this and he doesn't just
- 1:37walk past. No, Bunyan makes it clear he's
- 1:39concerned. He feels he has to try and wake
- 1:42them up. He really tries, doesn't.
- 1:43Oh yes, he cries out. The text says.
- 1:45It's urgent. He warns them directly about the
- 1:48roaring lion. You know the devil who could
- 1:50make them his prey. And he offers practical help
- 1:52too. He does.
- 1:53He says, look, I can help you off with your irons.
- 1:55He offers immediate release from their bondage.
- 1:58But their replies? There's something else simple.
- 2:01First, what does he say? Simple just says I see no
- 2:03danger. Flat out denial.
- 2:06Just doesn't see it. OK.
- 2:07And sloth? Sloth's response is classic.
- 2:10Yet a little more sleep. Comfort first, warning later or
- 2:13never. Pretty much.
- 2:15And then presumption. He's got this air of
- 2:17self-reliance. He says every fat must stand
- 2:20upon its own bottom. What is the answer Else that I
- 2:23should give thee? So basically, mind your own
- 2:25business. I can handle myself.
- 2:27That's the gist of it, yeah. Total confidence in his own
- 2:30stability despite the irons in the Gulf nearby.
- 2:32As Christian warns them, offers help, gets these brush offs,
- 2:36then what? They just lay down to sleep
- 2:38again. That's what Bunyan writes.
- 2:39They heard it all and consciously chose to go back to
- 2:42sleep in that dangerous place. And Christian, how does he react
- 2:45to that? He has to move on.
- 2:46He went on his way. But Bunyan adds he was troubled.
- 2:50Troubled that people in such peril would just ignore such
- 2:52kindness, such a free offer help.
- 2:56It really sets the stage, doesn't it?
- 2:57It really does. Right at the start, Bunyan shows
- 3:00you these three basic ways people might resist dealing with
- 3:03spiritual reality, denial, laziness or procrastination, and
- 3:09arrogant self trust. They refuse the grace that
- 3:11addresses both their chains and their dangerous situation.
- 3:14OK, so Christian is troubled by this, understandably.
- 3:18But he keeps going and soon he sees two other men.
- 3:22Their approach to the path is quite different.
- 3:26Very different. This isn't about sleeping, it's
- 3:28about how they got onto the narrow way in the 1st place.
- 3:31Christian came through the proper wicket gate, these two,
- 3:35Bunion says. They came tumbling over the wall
- 3:37on the left hand. Tumbling over the wall?
- 3:40That immediately sounds wrong. Illegitimate.
- 3:44Maybe. Exactly.
- 3:45It signals they haven't followed the prescribed way.
- 3:48And who are they? Bunyan calls them formalist and
- 3:51hypocrisy. Fitting names.
- 3:53Very. And when Christian asks about
- 3:55their origins and destination, they say they're from a place
- 3:58called Vainglory and they're heading for praise to Mount
- 4:01Zion. OK, so the source is Vainglory.
- 4:04The goal is praise. Not exactly ideal starting
- 4:07points, and Christian calls them out on how they got in right
- 4:10away. He asks why they didn't use the
- 4:12gate, which standeth at the beginning of the way, and he
- 4:15backs it up with scripture, doesn't he?
- 4:16Yeah. The part about climbing in
- 4:18another way makes you a thief and a robber.
- 4:20Precisely, he's saying their very entry method marks them
- 4:24negatively in the eyes of the Lord who owns the way.
- 4:26But. They have an answer ready, of
- 4:27course. Oh.
- 4:28They do, they say. Well, going to the gate that was
- 4:30counted too far about where they come from, too inconvenient.
- 4:33Climbing the wall was just, you know, their usual way.
- 4:36The. Usual way and they try to to
- 4:38justify it further they. Appeal to tradition to custom.
- 4:41They claim they could prove this method has been used for more
- 4:44than 1000 years. They think this long practice
- 4:47makes it legal basically. So custom Trump's the rule of
- 4:51the gate in their view. That seems to be their argument
- 4:54and they boil it down to if we get into the way, what's matter
- 4:58which way we get in. They even challenge Christian
- 5:00asking how are you any better off than us?
- 5:03We're all on the same road now, aren't we?
- 5:05A. Pragmatic argument on the
- 5:06surface, how does Christian respond his.
- 5:08Response is sharp. It's all about authority, he
- 5:11says. Look, I walk by the rule of my
- 5:13master, you guys. You walk by the rude working of
- 5:16your fancy of. Fancies, yeah.
- 5:19He tells them plainly, because of how you entered, you're
- 5:23counted thieves already by the Lord of the Way.
- 5:26He doubts they'll be accepted. At the end he says they came in
- 5:29by yourselves without his direction, and they'll go out by
- 5:32yourselves without his mercy. Strong.
- 5:35Words. What do formalist and hypocrisy
- 5:37say to that? Not much really.
- 5:40Bunyan just says they told Christian to look to himself.
- 5:44Sort of a worry about your own problems response and.
- 5:46They try to claim they're just as good outwardly, yes.
- 5:49They insist they'll follow all the laws and ordinances, just
- 5:52like Christian, they say. What's the difference, really,
- 5:55except for that coat you're wearing?
- 5:57The coat. Right.
- 5:58And I guess maybe his neighbors gave it to him just to hide the
- 6:01shame of thy nakedness. They completely miss its
- 6:04significance. OK, so.
- 6:06Let's talk about that coat because Christian uses it and
- 6:09other things to show why their paths are different.
- 6:12Exactly. He hits the main point again.
- 6:14Doing religious duties, the laws and ordinances won't save you,
- 6:17he says. Since you came not in by the
- 6:19door. The entry point is critical and.
- 6:22The coat? It wasn't from neighbors.
- 6:24No, Christian explains. It was a gift directly from the
- 6:28Lord of the place whither I go, given specifically to cover his
- 6:32nakedness, a token of His kindness.
- 6:35It's not about shame, it's about grace.
- 6:38And it serves a purpose later, yes.
- 6:40He says the Lord will know me for good at the city gate
- 6:44because he has the coat. It's a mark of acceptance.
- 6:47And there are other marks too, right Received when his burden
- 6:50fell. Correct.
- 6:51He mentions a mark in my forehead given by one of the
- 6:54Lord's closest associates, A. Visible sign of belonging
- 6:57perhaps? Seems like it.
- 6:59And also a roll sealed. This scroll serves 2 purposes.
- 7:03It's for his own comforting guidance, he can read it on the
- 7:05way, and it's another token proof that he'll definitely be
- 7:08allowed in at the Celestial Night.
- 7:09So coat, mark, roll, these are proofs of genuine entry and
- 7:14belonging. That's how Christian presents
- 7:16them, and he connects formalist and hypocrisy's lack of these
- 7:19things directly to their improper entry.
- 7:21He says all which things I doubt you want, and want them because
- 7:25you came not in at the gate you. Didn't start right, so you don't
- 7:28have the right credentials essentially.
- 7:29That's the implication. And how do formalist and
- 7:32hypocrisy react when Christian lays all this out?
- 7:35What do? They do.
- 7:35Bunion says they just looked upon each other and laughed.
- 7:39Laughed so they just dismiss it all.
- 7:41They don't get it or don't want to get it it.
- 7:42Seems so. They clearly don't value these
- 7:44tokens Christian holds dear. After that, Bunyan says they all
- 7:48continued, but separately. Formalist and Hypocrisy didn't
- 7:51talk much, while Christian kept ahead, sometimes sighing,
- 7:55sometimes feeling encouraged, often reading his role for
- 7:58refreshment. OK, so bringing these two
- 8:00encounters together, what's the contrast Bunyan is drawing for
- 8:04us? Well, you have the first group.
- 8:06Simple sloth presumption. Their issue is a fundamental
- 8:11refusal to even see the danger or accept help.
- 8:13It's about apathy, laziness, self trust, stopping them before
- 8:17they even consider the path right.
- 8:19And the second group formalist and hypocrisy their.
- 8:22Issue is different. They are on the path, outwardly
- 8:24at least, but they got there the wrong way by climbing the wall.
- 8:28They rely on custom, on doing the right things externally,
- 8:31maybe for show praise, but they've bypassed the Lord's
- 8:35designated entry point. And because of that, they lack
- 8:38the internal evidence, the tokens, the coat, the mark, the
- 8:42role that Christian received through proper entry.
- 8:44Exactly. Bunyan seems to be saying that
- 8:47how you start matters immensely. There's a specific date ordained
- 8:52by the Lord of the Way. Entering correctly brings with
- 8:55it signs of God's grace and acceptance.
- 8:58The covering, the identity mark, the assurance which
- 9:01distinguished the true Pilgrim from those just going through
- 9:04the motions or following traditions without true faith.
- 9:06So these early encounters in the Pilgrims progress really
- 9:11highlight some foundational errors right from the get go.
- 9:13They certainly do, and maybe it leaves you, the listener, with
- 9:16something to think about from Bunion's perspective.
- 9:19Consider these characters. What might spiritual sleep, that
- 9:22denial or laziness look like for you today?
- 9:25Or what kinds of customs or wall climbing might seem easier, more
- 9:29convenient than the way the Lord has actually set out?
- 9:31Right. And perhaps how do you recognize
- 9:34and depend on those tokens of grace, those evidences of
- 9:36acceptance that Bunyan suggests the Lord gives to those who come
- 9:40to him his way? Something to consider.
