- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So over the weekend I had the
- 0:31privilege of taking my son to a technical school to to talk
- 0:37about what's next when he finishes high school.
- 0:39Now my son, many of you may or may not know is 16 and he is a
- 0:45sophomore and he is homeschooled, quasi
- 0:49homeschooled. I say that that way because he
- 0:51attends a full blown Academy that is online, but he manages
- 0:57his day. He chooses very differently than
- 0:59most kids do. It's a very out-of-the-box way
- 1:02to go through high school. However, this is what he wanted
- 1:06and this is what we're doing. So he he has this opportunity
- 1:11with a college that's local, it's a tech school and they had
- 1:15an open house fair where you could come and you could see all
- 1:18the possibilities. Now why am I telling you all
- 1:20this? Because it was amazing to me how
- 1:23when we got there, there were so many kids in there and so many,
- 1:28you could feel how incredibly nervous a lot of the kids were,
- 1:34but more so the parents. So the parents are walking
- 1:38around and all these parents, you can pick up on it now.
- 1:41I mean, I can obviously this is what I do for a living.
- 1:44So I'm observing while I'm watching my son who's taking
- 1:48care of himself. And so it's it's, it was kind of
- 1:50like if you, if you've ever been to a trade show, it was set up
- 1:53like a trade show. So all these local companies
- 1:55that want people that want to go into trades, come in and meet
- 2:00kids and see, you know, how tell them all about the jobs, see
- 2:04what the job would look like. And then you have to go through
- 2:08an application process and whatnot.
- 2:10And then I amazingly you get to have this big pull.
- 2:15It's kind of like an interview night.
- 2:17So let's say my son wants to go into plumbing.
- 2:20There are about 11 plumbers that are looking for apprentices and
- 2:25for two years while he's in high school he will be able to
- 2:28apprentice with a company that they pick him and he picks them.
- 2:31So if he gets picked by multiple companies, then he can choose
- 2:34and then basically he would spend 2 years doing at least two
- 2:40days a week on the job, which it's a, it's a phenomenal way.
- 2:44And you get college credits at the same time you're getting
- 2:47high school credits. And his high school is like
- 2:49completely thrilled that we have this option to do this.
- 2:52And the, and the college is completely thrilled.
- 2:54It's, it's just a very out-of-the-box way of thinking.
- 2:57And we're so blessed to have this be an option for him
- 3:01because my son is incredibly mechanically inclined.
- 3:04Like he puts IKEA furniture together without instructions,
- 3:08gives you an idea of how his brain works.
- 3:10So anyway, back to the story. We're inside this place and I, I
- 3:15had talked to my son about this ahead of time.
- 3:17He knows that not everybody is going to know exactly what they
- 3:22want to do because he hears me talk about this all the time,
- 3:26how it's OK to change your your trajectory.
- 3:29It's OK to change the direction you're moving if it's not
- 3:33filling you up and it and it's truly not making you happy.
- 3:36So we have talked a lot about setting him up for winning and
- 3:39he's very confident about this. We've also given him a lot of
- 3:44opportunity to practice what he does.
- 3:46Like he builds things all the time.
- 3:49He's working on motors. He has a job now two days a week
- 3:54where he gets to go and work full like machinery, loading,
- 3:58doing all kinds of different things, working on motors, and
- 4:01that's his skill set. So when he went in there, he was
- 4:04incredibly confident. And afterwards we were having
- 4:09lunch talking about how the experience was.
- 4:11And he said, I, I don't understand how so many people
- 4:15are in there and they're just roaming and they don't know what
- 4:18they want. And I thought that was so
- 4:20telling because he's 16 and he knows what he wants.
- 4:23Like he knows what he wants, but so many of us don't.
- 4:27And partly you have to imagine the difference of growing up in
- 4:32an environment where you grow up with parents who are completely
- 4:36unattached and just have your best interest at heart.
- 4:40The only thing that we're attached to is what is going to
- 4:43be right for him. I don't need him to go to
- 4:45Harvard. I want him to be feeling like
- 4:49he's using his skills, using his greatness.
- 4:51But how many of us have ever really had that?
- 4:55So it got me thinking about how how right now in our world, we
- 4:59are either raising children and we are so attached to the result
- 5:04because we have a vision of it as opposed to them.
- 5:08Now, I can tell you after spending that time in there and
- 5:11watching my son confidently go up to tables, shake hands with
- 5:15people, talk to them about things.
- 5:17And the strangest part of the whole thing was he met a woman
- 5:20who was from a plumbing company and she was talking to him.
- 5:26And when we walked away, I felt like this woman was very
- 5:30uncomfortable talking to him because he was asking very
- 5:34specific questions. And he said to me, she doesn't
- 5:38have confidence in what she's doing.
- 5:40I wouldn't want to work for that company.
- 5:42And I said, you wouldn't tell me why.
- 5:44And he said, well, they put her out there to sell their company
- 5:48and she unsold me. That was what he said.
- 5:51She unsold me and I just sat there and I thought, one, I'm
- 5:54blessed because he's learned so much from just being in my
- 5:58world. And two, I'm so blessed that he
- 6:01knows what he wants to do and he is focused on being happy with
- 6:05it. And the point of today is if you
- 6:08are in a position where, one, you're cultivating someone,
- 6:12consider these thoughts because you want your person, whoever
- 6:16you're cultivating to be happy. You don't want to push them into
- 6:19a way where they spend time so unhappy that they grow up to be
- 6:22unhappy adults. And two, if you are one of those
- 6:25unhappy adults and you need to relook at what's going on in
- 6:29your world to find a way to get to happy and to find a way that
- 6:33you, you know you, you know you want to rewrite, remember, you
- 6:39can be happy along the way, every step of the way when
- 6:42you're aligned to a part of yourself.
- 6:44So if you need to realign parts of yourself, look at that
- 6:49because it is so valuable to your overall growth and your
- 6:52overall happiness of your soul. If there's nothing worse than
- 6:56being stuck on a trajectory that does not allow you to be
- 7:00yourself. So I hope you guys enjoyed my
- 7:04little story today about my weekend and I will see you all
- 7:07tomorrow. Have a blessed day, bye.
