- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! I'm so ready. But it's so hot today, isn't it? Lucas: Oh, it really is. I was just thinking that. Summer is in full swing. Luna: I'm melting. Can we complain about the heat in Cantonese today? Lucas: Absolutely perfect topic. Let's start with the most basic phrase: 好熱. Luna: 好熱. That means 'very hot'? Lucas: That's it. 好 means 'very' and 熱 means 'hot'. So 好熱 — very hot. Luna: 好熱. I can use that right now. It's 好熱 today. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if the sun is really strong, we say 好曬. Luna: 好曬. What does 曬 mean? Lucas: 曬 means 'sunny' or 'sunshine', so 好曬 means 'very sunny'. Luna: Oh, so I can say 今日好曬 for 'today is very sunny'. Lucas: You got it. And when it's so hot you can't stand it, we often say 熱到死. Luna: 熱到死. That sounds dramatic. 'Hot to death'? Lucas: Yeah, literally 'hot until death'. It's a common way to say it's unbearably hot. Luna: 熱到死. I love that. So expressive. Lucas: Now, what's the one thing we all do when it's 好熱? We turn on the air conditioner. Luna: Oh, 冷氣! We learned that before. '要開冷氣' means 'need to turn on the AC'. Lucas: Yes! 要開冷氣. 要 means 'want/need', 開 means 'turn on', 冷氣 is 'air conditioning'. Luna: 要開冷氣. I say that every day. Lucas: And finally, a useful question: 你怕唔怕熱? 'Are you afraid of heat?' or 'Do you dislike heat?' Luna: 你怕唔怕熱? 怕 means 'fear', right? So 'you fear not fear heat?' Lucas: Exactly. 怕 means 'to fear' or 'to be sensitive to'. So 你怕唔怕熱 is a very natural question. Luna: 你怕唔怕熱? I'm definitely 怕熱. I hate the heat. Lucas: Me too. Alright, let's put these together. Imagine we're outside. Luna: Okay. So I'd say: 今日好熱,好曬,熱到死。要開冷氣! Lucas: Perfect! That's a whole sentence. Today is hot, sunny, unbearably hot, need AC. Luna: Yeah. And if someone asks 你怕唔怕熱? I'd say 我怕熱. Lucas: 非常好. You're nailing it. Luna: Thanks. These phrases feel really useful for summer.
