- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's hit the inside scoop with FT Senior Insider, Ken Rosenthal.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's presented by the Fox One app. Ken, let's start
- 0:11Speaker 1: with the Dodgers. And this one surprised me. I know
- 0:15Speaker 1: that Edwin Diaz is struggling, but it's sounding more and
- 0:17Speaker 1: more like there's a chance that if those struggles and
- 0:20Speaker 1: the erratic performances continue for him, he might not be
- 0:23Speaker 1: part of the Dodgers postseason roster. Are we getting like
- 0:26Speaker 1: this Tanner Scott situation all over again for the Dodgers?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Sure seems like it.
- 0:32Speaker 3: And Keep in mind, if you're the Dodgers, you're going
- 0:35Speaker 3: to take your 26th best. And they have talked at
- 0:37Speaker 3: various points about how they feel this year's pitching staff, 1-13,
- 0:43Speaker 3: whatever it might be in the postseason, 1-12, will be
- 0:46Speaker 3: the strongest they've ever taken into October. They have believed
- 0:49Speaker 3: that at various points, and it still might prove to
- 0:51Speaker 3: be true. If Diaz, in their estimation, isn't going to
- 0:55Speaker 3: be good enough to be part of that, they're not
- 0:58Speaker 3: going to take him. This is a win-at-all-cost kind of
- 1:01Speaker 3: industry here. We're not trying to sewage feelings or anything
- 1:05Speaker 3: like that. And what's so interesting to me about the
- 1:08Speaker 3: Dodgers and the uproar about the Dodgers always is that
- 1:12Speaker 3: looking back at last offseason, the Kyle Tucker contract certainly
- 1:17Speaker 3: doesn't look great. He's been really much better in the
- 1:19Speaker 3: last week or so. The Edwin Diaz contract certainly doesn't
- 1:23Speaker 3: look great. And yeah, they have certain advantages financially. We
- 1:27Speaker 3: all know that. Sometimes those advantages could work against you.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Ken, is Diaz's problems mechanical? Is it mental?
- 1:36Speaker 4: I know he went on the aisle with a neck.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Is it because people are saying, oh, it's a mechanical issue.
- 1:40Speaker 4: It's a mechanical issue. Or is there a little bit
- 1:43Speaker 4: up here that he's not completely right with?
- 1:46Speaker 3: AJ, at this point, I'm not sure. I saw him
- 1:49Speaker 3: maybe about a month ago. And this was in, I
- 1:53Speaker 3: guess it was mid-August. And he had had a tough outing.
- 1:56Speaker 3: And if I got my dates wrong, please forgive me.
- 1:58Speaker 3: But He'd had a tough outing, and then I saw
- 2:00Speaker 3: him the next day, and he was like, I'm good.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I'm going to fix this. I know it's wrong mechanically.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I'm good. And once I fix this, everything will be fine.
- 2:08Speaker 3: He has always projected that kind of confidence throughout this year,
- 2:12Speaker 3: and when he's not healthy, he's not healthy. That's different.
- 2:14Speaker 3: But I don't know what exactly is up, and maybe
- 2:18Speaker 3: it is more physical than he understood or the Dodgers understood.
- 2:22Speaker 3: I don't know that. Maybe it's mental, but he has
- 2:26Speaker 3: always been– at least in my opinion, a very strong
- 2:30Speaker 3: guy mentally. And it would be surprising to me if
- 2:34Speaker 3: a lack of success got to him. He's been through
- 2:36Speaker 3: that in his career. He's had that with the Mets.
- 2:38Speaker 3: He had it with Seattle at times. So that would
- 2:41Speaker 3: surprise me. But who knows the combination of the physical
- 2:44Speaker 3: and the mental and the toll that might be taking?
- 2:47Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:49Speaker 2: One of the things, the positive things that happened with
- 2:51Speaker 2: the Dodgers is they clinched their playoff spot. They got
- 2:53Speaker 2: to pop champagne. Is their run... As impressive because of
- 2:58Speaker 2: the extended playoffs, more teams get in? And is it
- 3:03Speaker 2: going to be looked at differently than the record that
- 3:05Speaker 2: they tied?
- 3:07Speaker 3: I would say it's less impressive than the Braves simply
- 3:10Speaker 3: because there are more opportunities now for teams to get in.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But in most of these playoff appearances, they've won the division.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So let's not take that away from them and let's
- 3:21Speaker 3: not discount what they've done. It's been incredible.
- 3:23Speaker 2: 14 straight.
- 3:25Speaker 3: At the same time, yes, I know people watching certain
- 3:29Speaker 3: people in certain markets are going to say, well, they
- 3:31Speaker 3: have all these advantages. That's true. They've had financial advantages.
- 3:35Speaker 3: There's no question about them. They've also done things regarding
- 3:39Speaker 3: player development, international scouting, trades, signings, everything. The whole thing
- 3:45Speaker 3: put together, they've done that at a higher level than
- 3:48Speaker 3: every other club. And yes, they've put their advantages to
- 3:51Speaker 3: good use, but they've also done some things where, and
- 3:54Speaker 3: I'm not going to detail them now again, they were
- 3:58Speaker 3: making moves that were not necessarily even related to their finances,
- 4:01Speaker 3: and yet they pulled things off.
- 4:04Speaker 2: On the other side, the Yankees also clinched. Not necessarily, okay,
- 4:08Speaker 2: they had that blip where they only won 81 games,
- 4:11Speaker 2: but when they clinched, me as an ex-player that played
- 4:16Speaker 2: under Brian Cashman, is it time to look at him
- 4:19Speaker 2: and what he's done there, or is it going to
- 4:21Speaker 2: be the same thing as you just said, you know what,
- 4:23Speaker 2: they have a lot of financial advantages, so he's kind
- 4:26Speaker 2: of mid at the job that he does.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Well, in their case, it is time. It's past time
- 4:33Speaker 3: to understand what Cashman has accomplished. And all of those
- 4:38Speaker 3: years finishing above 500 since 1998, yes, they have had
- 4:44Speaker 3: financial advantages too. So have other teams. No other team
- 4:47Speaker 3: has had a winning record every year. Now, I know
- 4:50Speaker 3: certain fans, certainly certain Yankee fans, will say no World
- 4:54Speaker 3: Series title since 2009. Yes, that is true. It's undeniable.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And some of the teams have not been constructed as
- 5:01Speaker 3: well as they could have been. I would expect Cashman
- 5:04Speaker 3: would say that as well. However, they are always in
- 5:08Speaker 3: the mix. And despite what we keep hearing about the Dodgers,
- 5:13Speaker 3: it's hard to win a World Series. It's hard to
- 5:15Speaker 3: get through all these postseason rounds, and maybe this is
- 5:19Speaker 3: the year they do it. I don't know. But I
- 5:21Speaker 3: would not consider them a failure because they haven't won
- 5:23Speaker 3: the World Series since 2009. I know that is the
- 5:27Speaker 3: standard that George Steinbrenner set. It is the standard that
- 5:30Speaker 3: Derek Jeter espoused. It is what Aaron Judge talks about today.
- 5:34Speaker 3: The season is a failure if we don't win the
- 5:36Speaker 3: World Series. I disagree with that, but I understand where
- 5:41Speaker 3: it's coming from with the Yankees. To me... The 162
- 5:45Speaker 3: is the true test of a team and a true
- 5:48Speaker 3: test of how that team was constructed, how that team performed.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And the playoffs, you can get hot, you can not
- 5:54Speaker 3: get hot, you can have injuries. All these kinds of
- 5:56Speaker 3: variables come into play. And good for the Dodgers for
- 6:00Speaker 3: being in position to win three in a row and
- 6:02Speaker 3: not taking away anything from that. But remember the days
- 6:05Speaker 3: when Billy Bean said, my stuff doesn't work in the playoffs,
- 6:08Speaker 3: the playoffs are too random? Well, that feeling... seems to
- 6:12Speaker 3: have changed among a lot of people, and I don't
- 6:14Speaker 3: know that it should have. The playoffs are really difficult.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Eric Kratz, you're smart. You were a catcher in Major
- 6:21Speaker 1: League Baseball for a long time. You need to be
- 6:23Speaker 1: smart to be a catcher, and you also need to
- 6:26Speaker 1: be smart to get the best possible wireless plan that
- 6:30Speaker 1: you can get. Don't fall for the gimmicks or certain
- 6:33Speaker 1: types of sign-up bonuses. Just give me the cheap rate
- 6:37Speaker 1: and the premium wireless.
- 6:39Speaker 2: That's what Mint Mobile gives us, and you don't pay
- 6:42Speaker 2: a lot, and you get a lot.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Seems like a no-brainer, even for what you said, a
- 6:48Speaker 2: smart guy. Yep.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Be smart. Get your new wireless plan for just $ 15
- 6:52Speaker 1: a month. Go to mintmobile.com slash territory. Cut your wireless
- 6:55Speaker 1: bill to $ 15 a month at mintmobile.com slash territory. Upfront
- 6:59Speaker 1: payment of $ 45 for three months, $ 90 for six months,
- 7:02Speaker 1: or $ 180 for 12 months plan required. $ 15 per month equivalent.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only. Greater than

- 7:19Speaker 2: Wait, the Yankees try to win the World Series every year?
- 7:21Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 7:21Speaker 4: It's not a success if they don't win the World Series?
- 7:24Speaker 4: That's weird to hear a team say that. Anyways, I
- 7:27Speaker 4: don't know if you missed my stuff earlier, but anyways.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I hear the echoes.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Okay, perfect.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I want to ask you about the other team in
- 7:36Speaker 2: New York, the Mets.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Last night, They were chanting Fire Stearns, the whole deal.
- 7:41Speaker 4: The Mets have actually played a lot better in the
- 7:43Speaker 4: second half of the season. They're swinging the bats better.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Their pitching has improved drastically. There's no chance David Stearns
- 7:48Speaker 4: is not part of the New York Mets organization next year, right?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:53Speaker 3: David Stearns is going to be back. Steve Cohen has
- 7:56Speaker 3: already made that clear as the owner. He has said
- 7:59Speaker 3: that Stearns will be back. And clearly there were mistakes made.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We've discussed them ad nauseum. And last night was for fans.
- 8:07Speaker 3: a rightful chance to express their feelings, to express their
- 8:11Speaker 3: appreciation for Alonzo, who had so many great years as
- 8:14Speaker 3: a Met and who still should be a Met. And
- 8:17Speaker 3: it was also a chance for them to express their
- 8:19Speaker 3: frustrations with the decision that was made not to bring
- 8:22Speaker 3: him back and not really even to pursue him that hard.
- 8:25Speaker 3: So that was a moment that was building really all season.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Alonzo has had another great Pete Alonzo season in his
- 8:32Speaker 3: first year with the new team. And remember, we're now
- 8:34Speaker 3: seeing Bregman come out of it. And some of the
- 8:38Speaker 3: guys who struggled early, not so much Tucker, even though
- 8:40Speaker 3: he has been better lately, they've adapted and they've been fine.
- 8:44Speaker 3: And Alonzo wasn't great early, but he came on really strongly.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But to do what he has done in his first
- 8:50Speaker 3: year in a new organization is really impressive. And he
- 8:55Speaker 3: brings a ton to the table. He did that in
- 8:57Speaker 3: New York. And my biggest problem with the decision that
- 9:00Speaker 3: they made was here was a guy who succeeded in
- 9:04Speaker 3: New York. Not every player does that, and not every
- 9:07Speaker 3: player is capable of handling the unique pressure that comes
- 9:11Speaker 3: with playing in that particular market. Alonzo did. He proved
- 9:15Speaker 3: it over and over again, and guess what this year?
- 9:18Speaker 3: He has improved his defense, which was a wrap on him.
- 9:21Speaker 3: The guy obviously cares. He's been a great player for
- 9:25Speaker 3: a long time, and it was actually cool to see
- 9:28Speaker 3: last night just the appreciation Mets fans have for him.
- 9:32Speaker 2: We see it. He comes back. He's doing well. Stearns
- 9:36Speaker 2: is going to return. That's how I'm prefacing this question.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Do you see a change of course or a change
- 9:44Speaker 2: of beliefs or system? Because every GM says, I need
- 9:49Speaker 2: five years for my system to work. And just last
- 9:53Speaker 2: year at this time, they missed the playoffs by a game. Now, obviously,
- 9:57Speaker 2: they changed a lot this off season. Do you see him?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Do you see Stearns changing course again? Because if that's
- 10:03Speaker 2: the case, they should fire him right now because then
- 10:05Speaker 2: there's no chance it's going to work. He's doing something
- 10:07Speaker 2: that he never has done before.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Well, there's going to be an expectation next season that
- 10:13Speaker 3: they're a good team, a competitive team, a contending type team.
- 10:17Speaker 3: The question is, how do you get there? Now, there
- 10:19Speaker 3: have been some really good things happening with the Mets.
- 10:22Speaker 3: As you guys have mentioned, they've got an outfield now.
- 10:25Speaker 3: It's Benj, it's Ewing, and it's Soto. They've got probably
- 10:29Speaker 3: Bo Bichette coming back. I don't expect him to opt out.
- 10:31Speaker 3: They've got Francisco Lindor. Part of the issues that they've
- 10:34Speaker 3: had with some of these guys has been health. Lindor
- 10:36Speaker 3: and Soto, of course. They seemingly have gotten through the
- 10:39Speaker 3: worst of the Lindor-Soto relationship and From a position player standpoint,
- 10:45Speaker 3: there's some things that they can do. First base is
- 10:47Speaker 3: a bit of an issue, but they're pretty okay there.
- 10:50Speaker 3: What they've got to do is find a rotation and
- 10:53Speaker 3: build a rotation. They've got some pieces in place, but
- 10:56Speaker 3: they obviously need more. They need to reconstruct the bullpen
- 10:59Speaker 3: as well. And if you ask me if there's one
- 11:04Speaker 3: thing David Stearns would say as a takeaway from what
- 11:07Speaker 3: happened in the offseason and what happened last year, it
- 11:11Speaker 3: would be that He needs to find guys with better
- 11:15Speaker 3: track records of health. Robert Jr. did not have that.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Polanco did not have that. And that was the danger
- 11:21Speaker 3: with some of what they did. Yes, I understood the
- 11:24Speaker 3: need or the desire to break up a team or
- 11:26Speaker 3: a group that had not been successful. Fair enough. They
- 11:29Speaker 3: did not win in the playoffs. Okay. You want to
- 11:32Speaker 3: make those changes? Make those changes.
- 11:34Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 11:35Speaker 3: They've run their course in your opinion. What was the
- 11:39Speaker 3: mistake here? was bringing in these guys who were not durable,
- 11:43Speaker 3: who could not replace what Nimmo gave them, what Alonso
- 11:46Speaker 3: gave them, even what McNeil gave them. McNeil got hurt
- 11:49Speaker 3: a little bit more than those other two, but those
- 11:51Speaker 3: guys were guys who posted, and the Mets lacked that
- 11:55Speaker 3: with the players that they acquired, and it's going to
- 11:59Speaker 3: be okay for them because they found Ewing now, and
- 12:01Speaker 3: they found Benj, and Benj is looking like maybe a star,
- 12:05Speaker 3: but it was an awfully hard road to get to
- 12:08Speaker 3: this point. And that to me was the biggest mistake made.
- 12:11Speaker 3: They banked on too much risk.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Ken, do you think David Stearns will learn from his mistakes?
- 12:18Speaker 4: Will they give a pitcher a long-term deal? I know
- 12:21Speaker 4: the free agent class this year isn't great. It's good,
- 12:23Speaker 4: not great, but will they give a guy a long-term contract?
- 12:26Speaker 4: Will they do that to try to help solidify that?
- 12:29Speaker 4: I mean, they have McLean. They have some other guys.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Tong pitched pretty well last night.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Will they do that.
- 12:35Speaker 4: And will Stearns learn from maybe some of his mistakes
- 12:38Speaker 4: in the past?
- 12:39Speaker 2: I don't know. It's hard. Because then you have to
- 12:41Speaker 2: admit you made mistakes, right? It's hard for people. It is.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I believe that David Stearns would learn from any mistakes
- 12:48Speaker 3: that we would perceive him to have made. I'm not
- 12:51Speaker 3: sure that his reluctance to give pitchers long-term deals is
- 12:56Speaker 3: a mistake. And we've seen these long-term deals go south
- 13:00Speaker 3: in so many ways for so many pitchers. The problem
- 13:03Speaker 3: is when you take those short-term chances. Sometimes they're going
- 13:08Speaker 3: to work. Sometimes they're not going to work. Now in 24,
- 13:11Speaker 3: they had a great year because it worked. And then
- 13:14Speaker 3: the last two years, not so much. So the key
- 13:17Speaker 3: really is development. And I guess when it comes to
- 13:19Speaker 3: free agency this year, you might ask, okay, well, there's Scooble.
- 13:25Speaker 3: And then there's a whole tier well below where Scooble is.
- 13:28Speaker 3: It's Holmes and Gossman and guys like that.
- 13:31Speaker 2: They're good.
- 13:32Speaker 3: They're not going to command necessarily five- and six-year deals.
- 13:35Speaker 3: The one guy who will is Scooble. Will the Mets
- 13:38Speaker 3: want to go there when he has something of an
- 13:40Speaker 3: injury history? I don't know, and I don't know that
- 13:43Speaker 3: it would be wrong of them to avoid going there.
- 13:46Speaker 3: But you've got to come up with alternative solutions that are,
- 13:50Speaker 3: if not Tarek Scooble, viable solutions.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Ken, let's go to the Reds for a little bit.
- 13:56Speaker 2: They're going to obviously miss another playoffs again. They're eliminated.
- 13:59Speaker 2: They did make the playoffs last year. So I have
- 14:01Speaker 2: to say that before I say what I'm going to say,
- 14:05Speaker 2: should Nick crawl be coming back from what we hear?
- 14:08Speaker 2: He's coming back next year. Should he be coming back?
- 14:11Speaker 2: Is this a construction of the team issue, a financial issue,
- 14:15Speaker 2: or does this always, always, always just rest on the
- 14:18Speaker 2: players not playing up to their potential?
- 14:22Speaker 3: I would say it rests with the reds more in
- 14:24Speaker 3: ownership than anything else. And, Clearly, this is a team
- 14:29Speaker 3: that now has missed the playoffs 26 of the last
- 14:32Speaker 3: 31 years. Now, you can certainly find fault with Nick Kroll,
- 14:36Speaker 3: particularly at the deadline when they did nothing and they
- 14:39Speaker 3: should have done some things. I don't know how much
- 14:41Speaker 3: freedom he had to make those decisions. I don't know
- 14:43Speaker 3: how much freedom he has had to make other decisions.
- 14:47Speaker 3: He asked me if he should be back. I would
- 14:49Speaker 3: say the whole thing would need to change, starting at
- 14:53Speaker 3: the top, and then if you want to make a
- 14:54Speaker 3: change at the general manager, okay, but Right now, they're
- 14:57Speaker 3: being run by a guy, Castellini, Bob Castellini, who has
- 15:01Speaker 3: not had success, who has not shown his franchise can
- 15:07Speaker 3: be like the Brewers, like the Tampa Bay Rays, like
- 15:10Speaker 3: a team in his own state, the Cleveland Guardians. They've
- 15:13Speaker 3: not been a successful small market team, and they have
- 15:16Speaker 3: tried to compete. They've spent money at times, though not,
- 15:19Speaker 3: of course, at the level that the Dodgers and Mets
- 15:21Speaker 3: and Yankees spend at, and yet it still isn't there.
- 15:25Speaker 3: And I'll leave you with this. They've got two of
- 15:27Speaker 3: the best young position players in the game, Eli De
- 15:29Speaker 3: La Cruz and Sal Stewart. They've got one of the
- 15:31Speaker 3: best young pitchers in the game, Chase Burns. And yet
- 15:34Speaker 3: they didn't compete this year. Part of it was injuries.
- 15:38Speaker 3: We all get that. But all teams have injuries. And
- 15:40Speaker 3: it's not an excuse, ultimately. So if you're asking me
- 15:43Speaker 3: flat out if he should be back, I would say
- 15:46Speaker 3: in response, I don't think he is the problem.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Hey, today's episode is presented by the ASPCA Pet Health
- 15:53Speaker 1: Insurance Program. Crats, we love our pups.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Yes, I love my mini golden doodle, Bella. But you
- 16:00Speaker 2: can't miss this opportunity, just like Bella misses the ball
- 16:04Speaker 2: when you bounce it to her.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Bella, you're almost there. The ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Program
- 16:09Speaker 1: offers customizable accident and illness plans that can fit your budget,
- 16:13Speaker 1: your lifestyle, and even your pet's particular quirks. Because let's
- 16:16Speaker 1: be honest, vet bills can add up fast. ASPCA Pet

- 16:27Speaker 1: ASPCAPetInsurance.com slash foul. That's ASPCAPetInsurance.com slash foul. Again, ASPCAPetInsurance.com slash foul.
- 16:37Speaker 1: This is a paid advertisement. Insurance is underwritten by either
- 16:40Speaker 1: Independence American Insurance Company or United States Fire Insurance Company
- 16:43Speaker 1: and produced by PTZ Insurance Agency Limited. The ASPCA is
- 16:47Speaker 1: not an insurer and is not engaged in the business
- 16:49Speaker 1: of insurance.
- 16:51Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 16:51Speaker 5: All right.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Your Thursday game is the Mets-Phillies, correct? Correct. Correct. We
- 16:56Speaker 2: already hit the Mets quite a bit. My question is
- 16:59Speaker 2: for the Phillies. Has Dave Dombrowski done enough to address,
- 17:04Speaker 2: in my opinion, the reason that the Phillies have been
- 17:06Speaker 2: bounced out of the playoffs all the last three years
- 17:10Speaker 2: and the bullpen surrounding Johan Duran?
- 17:16Speaker 3: I don't know that that would be the reason I
- 17:18Speaker 3: would say is the reason they've been bounced. Their offense
- 17:21Speaker 3: has also failed in the playoffs, but If you're asking
- 17:24Speaker 3: if Dombrowski has built a good enough bullpen, the answer
- 17:26Speaker 3: to that right now would appear to be no. Now,
- 17:28Speaker 3: Alex McFarlane has been kind of a revelation for them.
- 17:31Speaker 3: They've got Durant at the back.
- 17:33Speaker 2: That's great.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Do they have enough to get to Durant, including McFarlane?
- 17:37Speaker 3: That's questionable right now. And if Lozardo is not right,
- 17:42Speaker 3: then they've got a real problem because Matt Gelb of
- 17:45Speaker 3: The Athletic suggested about a week ago that you could
- 17:49Speaker 3: throw Lozardo in the wildcard series and into the bullpen
- 17:54Speaker 3: to start Game 1. Game 1 would be started by
- 17:57Speaker 3: Sanchez or Wheeler, but you put Lozardo to be the
- 18:00Speaker 3: bridge guy, and maybe that's the way you go about it.
- 18:03Speaker 3: And maybe Andrew Painter can serve in that role. They
- 18:05Speaker 3: can use him in that way, and who knows?
- 18:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Maybe Aaron Nola, though Aaron Nola's been really good as
- 18:11Speaker 3: a starter lately. But right now, the Phillies have only
- 18:15Speaker 3: a one-game lead over the Padres, and they are in
- 18:18Speaker 3: danger of actually missing the playoffs. Then they've got two
- 18:22Speaker 3: at the Nationals, then they've got four with the Mets.
- 18:25Speaker 3: So it's a big week for them, obviously. It's a
- 18:27Speaker 3: big week for everyone, and it's a big two weeks
- 18:29Speaker 3: because it's the final two weeks. But it's going to
- 18:33Speaker 3: be really interesting to see, one, if they hold on,
- 18:36Speaker 3: and then two, how far can they go? Because they
- 18:39Speaker 3: had that offensive surge for about, I don't know, five,
- 18:42Speaker 3: six weeks, and now it seems like they've fallen off
- 18:45Speaker 3: a little bit again. So They're a really interesting team,
- 18:49Speaker 3: and it's going to be really interesting to see just
- 18:51Speaker 3: what they do, whether they get in or not, and
- 18:54Speaker 3: then what they do in the playoffs should they actually qualify.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Ken, didn't want to go to Houston with me, huh?
- 19:03Speaker 2: That's cool. I see how it is. That's cool. That's cool, Ken.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Why aren't you in Chicago with your boys?
- 19:10Speaker 2: What do you mean? They're not in Chicago. They're in Cleveland.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I mean, why aren't you with them?
- 19:16Speaker 3: That's where you should be, offering whatever moral support you can.
- 19:19Speaker 4: That's fine. I'd love to offer them all the support
- 19:22Speaker 4: I could. I can't just show up in the clubhouse
- 19:24Speaker 4: and be like, let's go kick.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Some ass, guys.
- 19:28Speaker 3: I mean, you know, you're A.J.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Pruszynski. Exactly. That's why I'm not allowed in the clubhouse.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Hey, A.J., I didn't actually hear the rant I was
- 19:38Speaker 3: waiting to come on, but that was a great win
- 19:40Speaker 3: last night.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Agreed. Obviously.
- 19:43Speaker 3: They're essentially a 500 team, but that was a big win.
- 19:45Speaker 3: And let's see what happens next too.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Listen, they basically, they clinched the, I mean, I'm not
- 19:50Speaker 4: going to say they clinched the division, but that win
- 19:52Speaker 4: gave them the season series, so no matter what happens,
- 19:54Speaker 4: they're two up in the loss column. That is basically,
- 19:57Speaker 4: you know, whatever, but that was an extra game they
- 19:59Speaker 4: basically added on to the division lead, and that was
- 20:04Speaker 4: a huge win, and Tristan Peters, listen, I think they've
- 20:06Speaker 4: done a lot of really good things. Ken, all I
- 20:08Speaker 4: said was, If they don't make it after the way
- 20:10Speaker 4: that things have gone, it's a failure because you have
- 20:14Speaker 4: a lead in a division late into September.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Expectations change. Yes, you weren't expected to be here, but
- 20:19Speaker 2: you're here now. Go finish it off. That's it. And
- 20:22Speaker 2: people don't like that.
- 20:22Speaker 3: No, I agree with that. And looking back now, there
- 20:26Speaker 3: were some people even at the time who questioned their deadline,
- 20:29Speaker 3: whether it was good enough. Right now, it doesn't look
- 20:31Speaker 3: like it was good enough. Let's see how it all
- 20:33Speaker 3: plays out. But Castillo has been a disappointment, of course,
- 20:36Speaker 3: and they didn't do enough else to to maybe justify
- 20:41Speaker 3: where they were at the time. Again, these are difficult
- 20:44Speaker 3: things to balance because they're still in some ways a
- 20:47Speaker 3: building club, but we'll see how this ends. It's going
- 20:51Speaker 3: to be really fascinating to see if they hold on.
- 20:53Speaker 2: They have a great chance. They have a great chance
- 20:54Speaker 2: to go to the LCS. That's all I'm saying. They
- 20:56Speaker 2: have a great chance to at least get to the
- 20:58Speaker 2: LCS this year. Take advantage of it. Let's go, boys. Strap,
- 21:02Speaker 2: as Hawk would say, what does he say? Lock it in,
- 21:04Speaker 2: strap it down. Let's go, boys. Lock it in, strap
- 21:06Speaker 2: it down. Whatever he used to say.
- 21:09Speaker 1: We've got an AL Central-White Sox-Guardians matchup that's stealing the
- 21:13Speaker 1: show for the first few days of the second to
- 21:15Speaker 1: last week of the season.
- 21:16Speaker 2: By the way, Ken, do you agree with Jim Bowden?
- 21:18Speaker 2: Junior Caminero should be the AL MVP?
- 21:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't agree.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Okay. I love Junior Caminero.
- 21:26Speaker 3: He's had an amazing year. But Alvarez has him by
- 21:29Speaker 3: 100 points in OPS.
- 21:32Speaker 2: No. Sorry. Okay.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Good. I like that. All right, Ken, good stuff. We
- 21:37Speaker 1: will catch you on fair on Thursday and we'll also
- 21:40Speaker 1: watch you on the Fox game on Thursday.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Thanks guys.
- 21:44Speaker 1: So the Fox game we're talking about Mets and Phillies
- 21:47Speaker 1: that Ken will be a part of also AJ, what's yours?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Royals Astros, Jordan Alvarez.
- 21:55Speaker 1: There you go. So you can catch them both on
- 21:57Speaker 1: the Fox one app at home or on the go
- 21:58Speaker 1: live or on demand. Never miss a moment stream. Now
- 22:00Speaker 1: start your Fox one three day free trial right now
- 22:03Speaker 1: at foxone.com. Let's spend some time on this. In the weeds,
- 22:12Speaker 1: Jeff Passan's article breaking down expansion team candidates. Now that
- 22:17Speaker 1: the Rays have a new ballpark approved, MLB no longer
- 22:20Speaker 1: has relocation threats with leverage, so they can finally move
- 22:25Speaker 1: on to new teams, right? When you have the Rays
- 22:28Speaker 1: and A's trying to figure out their stadium situations, what
- 22:30Speaker 1: you do is you say, well, we have all these
- 22:32Speaker 1: other cities interested. Well, now those ballparks have been figured out.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So let's get to what's next. Now, Rob Manfred, wants
- 22:40Speaker 1: one east coast or whatever eastern portion of the country
- 22:45Speaker 1: versus west if you split the country in half and
- 22:48Speaker 1: he is set to retire in january of 2029 if
- 22:51Speaker 1: you believe it i don't think he's going to retire
- 22:53Speaker 1: at that point but he'd like to have this figured
- 22:56Speaker 1: out okay so aj are you ready to run down
- 22:58Speaker 1: the cities that jeff listed and the likelihood here.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Of them okay salt lake check.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So there's one and let's start with yes yes.
- 23:10Speaker 2: I agree.
- 23:11Speaker 1: We've said this for two years on this show, right?
- 23:13Speaker 2: For two years.
- 23:14Speaker 6: They're going to get 5 billion, 5 billion per team.
- 23:17Speaker 6: So that's $ 10 billion injected into the, into it. Once
- 23:21Speaker 6: you get the CBA figured out. No, I don't think
- 23:23Speaker 6: the number is going to be.
- 23:24Speaker 2: No, no.
- 23:25Speaker 1: The number that pass and wrote about in his article
- 23:28Speaker 1: was upwards of two and a half per team. So
- 23:30Speaker 1: let's say it's, let's say it's three though, because the
- 23:32Speaker 1: recent valuations have been higher than they thought. So let's
- 23:34Speaker 1: say it's three bill per team. So $ 6 billion for
- 23:37Speaker 1: two teams is my guess around there.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Okay, fine. Okay, sorry. So each team gets $ 200 million
- 23:43Speaker 2: out of that, something like that. No big deal. That's fine, guys.
- 23:47Speaker 2: We need more money.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Business is good.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Salt Lake is a yes. Salt Lake's going to happen.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Salt Lake is going to happen. They want it to happen.
- 23:55Speaker 4: It's going to happen. It's more central.
- 23:57Speaker 2: It's not fully west.
- 23:58Speaker 4: It's a hub for airlines like Delta.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Salt Lake is going to happen. They love baseball there.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Media market, 28th.
- 24:05Speaker 4: They've proven that that doesn't really matter because they went
- 24:08Speaker 4: to Vegas, which was in the I think the 40s
- 24:10Speaker 4: in media markets.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Salt Lake, yes, going to have.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Wait, can I just mention over this board that the
- 24:18Speaker 1: three pillars are, do you have an ownership group? Salt
- 24:21Speaker 1: Lake has one, right?
- 24:21Speaker 3: The Millers.
- 24:22Speaker 1: And they helped save the Jazz and kind of helped
- 24:27Speaker 1: put Utah on the map for the Jazz for years.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Stadium funding, yes. That's a big yes, right? $ 3. 5 billion
- 24:34Speaker 1: pledge from ownership. and almost a billion dollars from state funding.
- 24:39Speaker 1: That's a lot of money these days from state funding.
- 24:41Speaker 1: That'll fund half the cost of the stadium. The other
- 24:43Speaker 1: pledge is for a whole mixed-use development area that MLB
- 24:46Speaker 1: loves and does a great job of, right? Stadium site, yes,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I already have that. It's already actually cranking crats. They're
- 24:51Speaker 1: already working on that power district there and building it up.
- 24:54Speaker 1: So Salt Lake City is about as much of a
- 24:56Speaker 1: guarantee as there can be when it comes to expansion talk,
- 24:59Speaker 1: and you just have to act like there are still
- 25:01Speaker 1: other teams involved, like Portland.
- 25:04Speaker 2: And that's really the only reason Portland's on the list
- 25:07Speaker 2: is because they got to have somebody out on the
- 25:11Speaker 2: western side. I know Salt Lake's not west. But one
- 25:14Speaker 2: thing that when we brought up Salt Lake the other day,
- 25:18Speaker 2: people were talking about in the comments, it's going to
- 25:20Speaker 2: be freezing. If you actually look at the city of
- 25:23Speaker 2: Salt Lake, the amount of snow that they get and
- 25:26Speaker 2: the weather, it is absolutely beautiful. I get it. Summertime
- 25:30Speaker 2: is really nice there from the times that I was there. But...
- 25:34Speaker 2: It's up in the mountains where they're going to get
- 25:35Speaker 2: the snow. So that's the biggest slam dunk on this list.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Agreed. Okay.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Easy.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Done. Salt Lake's a wonderful city, too. I played there.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I played there. It is top-notch city. It's beautiful. Besides
- 25:50Speaker 2: watered-down booze, but you can figure that out.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Next up. Yeah, the booze laws out there are weird. Nashville,
- 25:58Speaker 1: 25th media market, was looked at as what? Why'd you
- 26:02Speaker 1: shake your head at me?
- 26:04Speaker 2: There's ways around the booze stuff.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I know there's ways around it, but it's still just
- 26:07Speaker 1: weird sometimes when you see they have those shot-pouring things.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I'm like, come on.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Relax.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Let's get with the times. But that's okay. Mostly perfect
- 26:14Speaker 1: out there. 25th Market, Nashville. They have none of the
- 26:18Speaker 1: three pillars, and local politicians, at least currently in office,
- 26:21Speaker 1: are not really into giving money. To me, this is
- 26:24Speaker 1: a huge hurdle. I think they can find an owner.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I think they can find a site, AJ.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 26:28Speaker 1: If you can't get local politicians to agree to give
- 26:30Speaker 1: hundreds of millions of dollars of public money, I think
- 26:33Speaker 1: MLB is going to push pretty strong to the team
- 26:36Speaker 1: we'll talk about after this one, despite Nashville being such
- 26:40Speaker 1: a perfect place to fill up a ballpark.
- 26:43Speaker 4: I would have said Nashville was a yes, but because
- 26:45Speaker 4: they have, I mean, they have the Dave Stewart group
- 26:47Speaker 4: and they still have that, but Nashville, but they don't
- 26:49Speaker 4: have a site for the stadium.
- 26:50Speaker 2: That's the big thing. They don't have a site for
- 26:52Speaker 2: the stadium.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And they don't have a lot of public behind them,
- 26:56Speaker 4: I don't feel like. I mean, as big of a
- 26:58Speaker 4: hit as the Titans have been and the Predators have been,
- 27:00Speaker 4: when you talk to people there, it doesn't seem like
- 27:03Speaker 4: when you read articles, there's not a huge push from
- 27:05Speaker 4: people to get them. Salt Lake, there's a huge push
- 27:07Speaker 4: from a lot of people involved. Nashville, as perfect as
- 27:10Speaker 4: it would be, just doesn't seem like there's a huge push.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Can MLB make it that way? Probably, but I don't know.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Back in the day, Kratzy and I were looking for tickets.
- 27:20Speaker 5: It was so hard to find a seat online. or
- 27:22Speaker 5: anything available. You'd have to go online and there was
- 27:25Speaker 5: nothing there. But now with SeatGeek, they make it so
- 27:28Speaker 5: much easier for you. They have the green light special.
- 27:31Speaker 5: What does that mean? It means when the green light
- 27:33Speaker 5: is on, you can get some of the best seats available.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Go to SeatGeek. Kratzy understands how easy it is.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you used to scalp your tickets, but look,
- 27:41Speaker 2: it's way, way better now because you get to just
- 27:43Speaker 2: go right on SeatGeek and find your post-season tickets. I'm
- 27:47Speaker 2: not even going to fast forward to the post-season. I'm
- 27:49Speaker 2: going to say, the run to October because some teams
- 27:52Speaker 2: aren't in yet. So right now is the time to
- 27:54Speaker 2: get it. And those seats are available.
- 27:56Speaker 5: And it's playoff time, the best time for baseball. And
- 27:59Speaker 5: of course I have a code for you all. You
- 28:01Speaker 5: can use code territory 10 for 10% off your next
- 28:04Speaker 5: set of MLB tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% off MLB
- 28:08Speaker 5: tickets with promo code territory 10. Make sure you click
- 28:11Speaker 5: the link in the description to download the app and
- 28:13Speaker 5: have the code automatically added to your account so you
- 28:16Speaker 5: can use it later.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't, I don't know. I honestly thought it
- 28:22Speaker 2: was going to happen, but just like I thought Portland
- 28:24Speaker 2: was going to happen years ago, and then once Salt
- 28:27Speaker 2: Lake came through, it was like, eh, nope, Portland's not
- 28:31Speaker 2: going to happen.
- 28:34Speaker 1: So here's where I think the real race is, right?
- 28:36Speaker 1: You could basically skip ahead to this park. We could
- 28:38Speaker 1: have told you it's Utah, and we might not have
- 28:40Speaker 1: time to get to some of the other ones later,
- 28:42Speaker 1: or we'll go quickly on them. The real competition right
- 28:45Speaker 1: now is Raleigh, the 22nd market. going up against Nashville. Okay.
- 28:51Speaker 1: And let's show that board because they've got a lot
- 28:53Speaker 1: in their favor right now. It is a state that
- 28:56Speaker 1: is growing rapidly in population, including three top 50 markets
- 29:00Speaker 1: with Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro. They have no teams and
- 29:04Speaker 1: they're on track to be the seventh largest state by population.
- 29:07Speaker 1: By the time expansion happens, the top six states all
- 29:10Speaker 1: have multiple MLB teams. North Carolina doesn't have any, they've
- 29:14Speaker 1: got a good name by their side in Carolina hurricanes owner,
- 29:17Speaker 1: Tom Dundon, who also owns the Blazers, and he's pledged
- 29:20Speaker 1: to handle this. No official site yet, but he's got space.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So I think the stadium site part of this, AJ,
- 29:25Speaker 1: is actually a little bit of a misconception. He has
- 29:27Speaker 1: 80 acres around the arena that he owns for the
- 29:30Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes. And I mean, there's no public funding pledge yet,
- 29:35Speaker 1: but politicians are open to it. So I actually think
- 29:37Speaker 1: there's three yeses here right now.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 4: I think Raleigh might be the one because the funding
- 29:42Speaker 4: will happen if it gets to a point where they
- 29:44Speaker 4: think it can happen. They're not, no state house is
- 29:46Speaker 4: going to provide money if they don't think they're going
- 29:49Speaker 4: to get a team. And then secondly, the stadium site,
- 29:51Speaker 4: if they already have 70 or 80 acres ready to go, that's,
- 29:54Speaker 4: that's a no brainer. You put it around the, The
- 29:56Speaker 4: hockey arena, and by the way, the Panthers, I mean
- 29:59Speaker 4: the Hurricanes, sorry, have been a huge, huge thing for
- 30:03Speaker 4: that city. Plus you have North Carolina, you have Duke,
- 30:05Speaker 4: you have North Carolina State.
- 30:07Speaker 2: You have a lot of stuff that's happening around that area.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Actually, I used to think it would be Charlotte, but
- 30:12Speaker 4: the more I read about Raleigh, I actually think Raleigh
- 30:14Speaker 4: might be the other one.
- 30:15Speaker 2: It might be Raleigh and Salt Lake.
- 30:18Speaker 1: One minute for each of us. I'll take Portland. AJ
- 30:19Speaker 1: gets Orlando. Kratz finishes with Montreal because he loves it
- 30:23Speaker 1: there and he played in Canada. Portland, 23rd market. To me,
- 30:27Speaker 1: there's definitely some potential here. I just don't think they
- 30:29Speaker 1: have any semblance of a chance, right? They currently don't
- 30:33Speaker 1: have an owner. It appears they do have a beautiful
- 30:36Speaker 1: site out there and public money. It sounds like about
- 30:39Speaker 1: 800 mil could be committed in public money for a stadium.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So there is a lot, and I feel like they
- 30:44Speaker 1: could probably find an owner. I just feel like this
- 30:45Speaker 1: is irrelevant because of how much pull Salt Lake City
- 30:48Speaker 1: has right now within Major League Baseball. I've been hearing
- 30:50Speaker 1: that for years, so have many others. AJ, the Orlando
- 30:54Speaker 1: Dreamers are dreaming about the 15th largest market and the
- 30:58Speaker 1: largest market without baseball. They've got a site. Actually, I
- 31:01Speaker 1: was surprised. They don't have public money from Orlando, or
- 31:04Speaker 1: they do? In this article, they said no.
- 31:06Speaker 4: But they could. Here's the problem. MLB's not going to
- 31:11Speaker 4: put three teams in Florida.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 31:13Speaker 4: They're not going to put a team an hour away,
- 31:15Speaker 4: an hour and 20 minutes away in Orlando from Tampa.
- 31:19Speaker 2: They're just not going to do it.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Tampa just got the best hope for Orlando, and I
- 31:23Speaker 4: was all in this, and I've been not involved as
- 31:27Speaker 4: much as I used to be, but was.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Getting Tampa to move to Orlando.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Now that they have a stadium, there's no way MLB
- 31:33Speaker 4: is going to put a third team in Florida.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I'm sorry. People talk about the Rays having trouble, the
- 31:37Speaker 2: Marlins having trouble. They're going to put a third team
- 31:39Speaker 2: in Florida? It's not happening. I'm sorry.
- 31:41Speaker 4: It sucks for me because I'm an Orlando guy. I
- 31:43Speaker 4: would love to have a team here, but they only
- 31:46Speaker 4: also have 35 acres.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Too small.
- 31:49Speaker 4: The Orlando tourist tax, they said they would help if
- 31:52Speaker 4: it got to where it got close. It never got
- 31:53Speaker 4: that close. The owner, Rick Workman, I know very well.
- 31:58Speaker 4: He wanted to own a team. He went with Tampa
- 31:59Speaker 4: because he knew they were going to get the stadium
- 32:01Speaker 4: in Tampa. So, yeah, it's a no for me.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I love you, Orlando. Love you, Dreamers, but
- 32:06Speaker 2: not going to happen. For Montreal, parlez-vous français, de le compléter,
- 32:10Speaker 2: mon chéri? And all that means is? No, no, and no.
- 32:16Speaker 2: No owner, no funding. No, it didn't work last time.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Good documentary if you want to watch it. I think
- 32:27Speaker 2: it should work. It doesn't. There's a lot more bureaucratic
- 32:32Speaker 2: things to work through up there. It's a shame because
- 32:36Speaker 2: I think the area really did support it or could
- 32:40Speaker 2: support a team if done correctly.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's big.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Population's big. Market's big. Second biggest market in Canada. But
- 32:46Speaker 1: I think the name of the project up there is
- 32:48Speaker 1: a microcosm of their chances. It's called the Peanut Project.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I'll walk myself out.
